Going for long walks, sitting at cafes and travelling alone give me time to think and reflect. Sometimes it’s nice to let your mind wander a bit. Often the best ideas come from places we least expect them to! I believe an art director’s job extends beyond simply design. We are also strategists and storytellers. Someday I hope to become a Creative Director who is able to help brands play a more active and meaningful role in people’s lives.

uring my stint with the Community Preparedness Branch in the SCDF Public Affairs Department, I helped coordinate outreach programmes on emergency preparedness. Using the skills I have developed at the School of Design, Temasek Polytechnic, I also helped design public education materials and collaterals for outreach programmes and for events such as the Fire Safety Asia Conference and Home Team Convention. From this experience, I learnt the importance of a single, clear message in communicating an idea. A simple idea that resonates well with its target audience beats an overly embellished one any day. This is something that

guides all the work I do today, including projects for multinational clients such as Google and Unilever. At Arcade, I worked on a retail experience project to create the world’s first Google Android concept store in Jakarta called Android Nation (see inset). We designed every aspect of the store, from the striking Android facade to the immersive in-store experience. Watching people engage with the brand through my work gave me a real sense of satisfaction. Complacency kills creativity, so always be patient and humble. Make it a habit to get out of your comfort zone and expose yourself to things that make you uncomfortable. You need to keep pushing yourself to stay creative.

WHAT IS KRAV MAGA? Krav Maga, which means “contact combat” in Hebrew, one of the most effective hand-to-hand fighting techniques in the world today. I’VE LEARNT MARTIAL ARTS BEFORE. WHY WOULD I NEED KRAV MAGA? Because they’re not the same. Traditional martial arts are constrained by rules and regulations within the context of a competitive sport – for example, dealing with a single opponent within the confines of a ring and a referee. In contrast, Krav Maga has no such restrictions because it’s an entirely reality-based system. Our strikes are targeted at vulnerable areas to maximise pain, with techniques that enhance the body’s natural reactions and reflexes.

WHAT’S A TYPICAL CLASS AT KRAV MAGA CULTURE (KMC) LIKE? Each class starts with a thorough warm-up to prevent injuries. The instructor then presents a problem and demonstrates the solutions in stages. Students proceed to engage in games that train them to react to problems, after which they practice in pairs under guidance. All classes end with an exercise where students get to practise and execute the techniques learnt under simulated scenarios.

Edwin is the highest-ranking Singaporean instructor in Krav Maga. Muhammad Ridhwan Selamat drives a local martial art to greater heights s a Train Captain, I trained for six months at the SMRT Institute, where I also learnt to perform a 12-car rescue, driving from the rear, detrainment procedures and what to do if a fire breaks out on board. My job requires me to think and act fast in solving problems, as I need to ensure the safety of the public. When I encounter faults I need to fix them quickly to minimise any disruption to the train service. In silat, apart from physical fitness and skills, you need to have the mind of a fighter. Never back down in the face of obstacles or defeat. You need to be committed to practice, and you must consistently perform well every time. I train on weekdays from 9am to 11am, or 8pm to 10pm, depending on my work shift. I am gearing up for the Silat World Championship in Phuket next January and then the SEA Games in Singapore next June. In future I hope to contribute as a coach to our young sportsmen. I want to inspire them as a national athlete and show them, “I’ve been there, and so can you”. Fasting during Ramadan teaches me to be more disciplined. It is part of my religious responsibilities and to me it is important to fulfil that along with my training, NS and work. Positive thinking keeps me going and I would reward myself a small portion of good food. In silat there are many selfdefence techniques for different situations. The moves I learnt in silat, such as blocking, locking and taking someone to the ground, did help me while I was a police officer on patrol.

My mentor SSGT Joo Song inspired me when I was an NPCO. He taught me how to handle cases and be confident, firm and kind. I am most grateful for his guidance. My NS experience has taught me to be patient and understanding when dealing with people. Since I spend most of my time on work and silat, it is important for me to spend time with my family and loved ones whenever I can. Every NSman has a part to play, even when we are not in uniform. We can play our part in saving lives and help those in need, as we have been trained to do so. hen it comes to testing the quality of your race machine, there’s nothing better than pushing its limits on punishing road courses such as the world’s most famous road race – the 60-km Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. Within the range was the 100% synthetic 300V Factory Line lubricant, which was used by partner teams and riders throughout the 2014 entry list. A notable category in the Isle of Man TT races was the TT Zero event, which was created specially for motorcycles powered without the use of carbon-based fuels and have zero toxic/noxious emissions. This year, the TT Zero event was won by veteran English racer John McGuinness on a Mugen Shinden San. John’s teammate, New Zealander Bruce Anstey, came in second, also on a Mugen Shinden San. Motul is a technical partner to Mugen in many of their racing activities, including Super GT and the Mugen Shinden electric bike project. The Mugen Shinden San has been a runaway

success, with the fastest-ever speeds clocked in the TT Zero race since the event was created in 2010. John McGuinness’ record-breaking max speed at the 2014 race was 265km/h, with an average lap speed of 188km/h. Electric racebikes have made tremendous progress in the last five years. Based on the timings recorded at the Isle of Man since 2010, lap speeds have been increasing by around 11km/h every year. If this continues, the electric bike could match their carbon-spewing counterparts in just five years. Motul is excited to be part of this revolution in electric racebikes, where speed records continue to be smashed every year. Firefighter by day, SCDF volunteer by night ending to mangled bodies in traffic accidents, putting out fires and saving lives. These were some of the things Mr Shazni Bin Mohamed Salim, 27, did during his NS days with SCDF in 2007. “It was through my NS experience that I realised the importance of saving lives. As responders, we make a difference between life and death,” said Shazni, who was so inspired he joined ExxonMobil as a professional firefighter. At ExxonMobil, Shazni responds to incidents occurring within the company’s facilities and tries to resolve them before the SCDF arrives. He also handles the daily maintenance

of firefighting equipment and is the trainer for in-house firefighting courses for technicians and contractors. Inspired by his NS experience and wanting to contribute to society, Shazni joined the Civil Defence Auxilliary Unit (CDAU). He is posted to Ang Mo Kio Fire Station and does a minimum of 16 hours each month, working alongside regulars to conduct rescues. “I may be an auxiliary firefighter, but my duties are similar to those of the regulars. We all play an equally important role.” Besides living by SCDF’s mission to protect and save lives and property, he

also lives by these two quotes: “All men are created equal, then a few become firemen” and “Leave no men behind”. Shazni recalls an incident along Rowell Road in 2012. Tired and hungry from a hard day’s work, he was about to tuck into dinner with fellow firefighters when they were suddenly called to assist in a rescue. Although he was originally assigned to set up a supporting appliance, tables turned at the scene and he had to help put out the raging fire instead. “In a rescue situation, things change quickly and we need to be alert. You forget how tired you are when you are fighting the fire,” said Shazni. For those who are considering being a CDAU volunteer, Shazni said: “Having a good team spirit and putting others before self are essential qualities to doing this job well. t was a passion for online games that made Karls Tan decide on a career in animation and gaming design. The 32-year-old engineer had worked at a shipyard for more than four years when he realised he wanted to do something creative with his life. “I’ve always loved playing online games and analysing information,” said Karls. “A career in gaming enables me to do what I love.”

he Committee to Strengthen National Service (CSNS), which was set up in March 2013, has proposed 30 recommendations to improve the NS system to better serve Singaporeans. The Government accepted all the recommendations in May 2014. To provide greater insight into the upcoming changes and new initiatives to be introduced, the SCDF conducted a briefing cum Q&A session for its NS Key Appointment Holders and Responsibility Appointment Holders on 20 June at the Civil Defence Academy. MAJ (NS) Ng Chin Ho Gary, who runs his own business, said that the certification of courses under the Workforce Skills Qualifications

(WSQ) framework would help NSmen gain new and transferable skills that could help in their future career. “The courses that servicemen go through during their NS are useful to their employers, and by accrediting such courses, it would make their skills even more marketable,” said MAJ (NS) Ng. The NS leaders would be sharing the information on the CSNS recommendations with their men following the session. To share the CSNS recommendations with NSFs, the NS Personnel Department held a series of roadshows from 2 to 10 July at the respective SCDF Divisions and Units. NSFs could now be offered short-term contracts to enable them

These recommendations, which had been accepted by the Government, sought to ensure a strong NS training system, and to better recognise our NS officers. DSP (NS) Mulyadi Bin Ahmad, 38, was officially appointed the Deputy Commander of the Airport Police Division (APD) at Changi Airport. “It is an honour to be one of the two Home Team Officers who are on the panel of CSNS,” said DSP (NS) Mulyadi. “One recommendation that I was pleased with was the employment of more regulars to help out with the training for NS. n 12 July, members at HomeTeamNS-JOM were treated to drinks, hot dogs and popcorn as they got cosy for a day of movie screening. At the lobby, families gathered to watch The LEGO Movie, Wolverine, Tarzan and more. Some of the little ones managed to play a few Xbox games before the screening. “It was a nice selection of movies,” said Mr Mok, an SCDF NSman who brought his son, 10, and daughter, 7, to the screening. “This is something the entire family can enjoy, as the movies are entertaining for all ages,” said Mdm Fareedal, who watched the movies with her boys, aged 8 and 5.
