YOU’VE MADE THE CALL: Follow no rules but your own, live a spectacular life, comfortably (let’s face it - kids are expensive), here are some things you should think about in order to keep your freedom and independence intact for the long haul. On tuition between 2012 and 2013, the average household spending on tuition is now S$79.90 per month, with many tuition centers charging rates as high as S$150 per month or more if they have “star tutors”. Before spending so much on tuition, evaluate if your child truly needs it. It is just as important to develop soft skills such as leadership, eloquence, and sportsmanship to be a rounded individual. A PLACE TO CALL HOME
Being single and saddled with a mortgage in Singapore is no walk in the park. That said, if you see your property as a potentional longterm investment, adopt a healthy attitude early on. » Buy a unit that suits your lifestyle needs. If being in a more central location is important, you’ll have to consider a more modest pad. » Be prepared to sell your place (After the heavy stamp duty rates expire or the Minimum Occupancy Period has passed) if the market yields you a profit. D
uring my National Service, I served in the Special Operations Command (SOC), a frontline unit of the Singapore Police Force specialising in serious cases of public disorder and emergency. In the two years, I learnt a lot about disaster management, riot control and crowd dispersal. Recently, I joined SPF Training Command’s team of SGSecure trainers to train and educate SPF officers in communicating the SGSecure message to the community. Our target is to have at least one person trained in every household. Specifically, the officers must approach residents in a professional and tactful manner, so as not to cause panic. The lessons must also be simple, such as the ‘Run, Hide, Tell’ drill, so that residents will remember what to do in an emergency. As a civilian, I teach physical education full-time. It’s not as easy as it may seem! Foremost, we must be proficient in the way we speak. The tone we use with a child who has just left kindergarten differs from that we adopt for a 12-year-old. The way I talk to colleagues as a senior teacher is also different. In the school, I’m also the disciplinarian. It can be challenging to project an authoritarian image as sometimes the children find it difficult to relax around me. On the domestic front, my wife is understanding about my various responsibilities, and I also try to spend as much time with the family as I can. For example, if I’m scheduled for reservist duty in the following week, I make a conscious effort to be more present in the current week and also in the week after I return. I have understanding bosses as well. The school sees reservist duty as an opportunity for me to hone my skills. The principal also knows that if he needs someone to educate the other teachers, he can mobilise me. I’m fortunate to have a good support network for my work endeavours!

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SGT (NS) Lim Zi Yao speaks candidly about the challenges and importance of staying united
I
am a trained Public Shelter and Resilience Unit (PSRU) officer. My unit, 301A Shelter Company, is responsible for converting Bartley MRT station into a bomb shelter if faced with an imminent threat. We are familiar with the procedures for a smooth and efficient conversion, including decontamination, blast door operations and shelter management. In addition, we have roles in community engagement and community first response. For example, we undertake door-to-door house visits during in-camp training to disseminate information on emergency
preparedness, such as household shelter management and fire safety. In a way, our reservist duties are a reminder that we should stay prepared and united at all times and that our roles are equally critical in times of crisis. During my national service, I was a Public Education Instructor with the Public Affairs Branch of SCDF 3rd Division. My duties included conducting community outreach activities and Community Emergency Preparedness Programmes, which helped to hone my public communication skills. In addition, my ability to speak several
languages, including Malay, helps me to reach a wider group of residents during the house visits. My day job as a legal counsel has trained me to work collaboratively with the different parties involved in a legal dispute. The key in resolving a dispute is to consolidate all views and agree on the best way forward. These skills are fully transferable to PSRU, where people sometimes have their own views about some practices, even though standard operating procedures are in place. My role would then be to facilitate and consolidate the different viewpoints and facilitate team members in coming to an agreement on the best approach. In our PSRU unit, we share such a strong bond that we treat every in-camp training like a family reunion. If our cohesiveness could be duplicated throughout Home Team, and even across Singapore, then the key aim of the SGSecure message – ‘staying united’ – would be fulfilled!

promote racial and religious harmony, so that they would stand united during an emergency. PM Lee also unveiled the new SGSecure mobile app, a one-stop portal for members of the public to receive alerts during major emergencies, provide information to and seek assistance from the authorities, and download information on how the threat of terrorism can be mitigated. The launch was attended by partner agencies, community and religious leaders, students, key participants of pilot SGSecure projects, as well as Home Team volunteers and National Service (NS) officers.

rime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officially launched SGSecure on 24 September 2016 at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. The launch marks the first major milestone for the national movement, which aims to enhance awareness of the terrorism threat Singapore faces and to equip residents with the skills and knowledge to respond to an attack. In his speech, PM Lee encouraged Singaporeans to be vigilant in deterring a terrorist attack, and to know what to do during and in the aftermath of an attack. He also stressed that individuals must strengthen social bonds and

MAKING WAVES REAL Swim 2016 entices 110 swimmers with a new swim-and-run category

T
he annual REAL Swim made a much-anticipated comeback on 20 August. Graced by HomeTeamNS Balestier Executive Chairman DAC (NS) Lionel Chai, PBM, the event saw 110 competitors across 12 divisions from SPF and SCDF competing in the new Sprint Biathlon category, comprising a 800m swim and 1km run. The Fun Swim, as usual, attracted swimmers of all ages. Over 250 NSmen and their children encouraged one another to complete a combined total of 50 laps in their own time. Everyone was also treated to a special performance by the Singapore Synchronised Swimming National Youth Team, and fun activities at various booths. The champion of the Team category was the Police Coast Guard (PCG) Team 1. Said SC/SGT (NS) Lim Kai Xuan, “It’s the dedication and training that allowed us to win! We didn’t have the chance to meet and train, but we updated our own progress in the REAL Swim WhatsApp group. I’m definitely looking forward to more activities next year!”

FIGHTING FIT Fitness Challenge 2016 presents new records

eld on 1 October at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium, the annual HomeTeamNS Fitness Challenge saw participation from 11 divisions across the Home Team forces. The event was graced by Mr Eric Yap, HomeTeamNS Vice President and Commissioner SCDF. For the first time, 12 NSmen volunteers from HomeTeamNS’s Management and Executive Committees competed in the 4x800m relay run, with the Bukit Batok Executive Committee emerging as the victors. Proving to be the fittest among the very fit, PROCOM was the overall champion of Fitness Challenge 2016.

The Open House weekend offered a wide variety of activities, including workshops, exhibitions and fitness trials. The main highlights – movie screenings, instant photo booths and USAR K9 Dog Show – drew a lot of attention and participation. Free health, dental and skin screenings were also provided at the Healthy Lifestyle Village. DEDICATED PROTECTORS Meet two everyday heroes with a passion for security
W
I
nspired by his brother-inlaw’s anecdotes of his time in the Singapore Police Force (SPF), PC (APF) Ammar Bin Abdul Rahman has always aspired to work in the security line. He recalled a memorable story where his brother-in-law detained a wanted man during one of his patrols and had to pull out his weapon in an act of defence. PC (APF) Ammar’s passion for security grew when he served his National Service (NS) in SPF’s Public Transport Security Command (TransCom), where his job was to deter crime and detect potential terrorist threats on the MRT. He recounted a time when he even had to chase an illegal immigrant from Farrer Park to Little India. His zeal for upholding justice never waned, and he wanted to join a law enforcement career despite having a NITEC in Automotive Technology. Soon after his Operationally Ready Date (ORD), PC (APF) Ammar chanced upon an online AETOS advertisement for Auxiliary Police Officers (APOs) and hasn’t looked back since.
Importance of an APO Today, PC (APF) Ammar is part of a team deployed at Woodlands Checkpoint, armed with the responsibility of keeping our borders safe. “We are the first and last line of defence,” says PC (APF) Ammar. “APOs screen people who come into our country – if the entry process isn’t done correctly, it could lead to detrimental consequences. In addition, if criminals want to leave the country, we, as the last line of defence, must stop them.” As an APO, his daily duties include traffic control and area patrol, as well as people, vehicle and bag checks. “In this line of work, one must have an open mindset. It should never be about the money, because you’re talking about our national security here. We have to diligently uphold our duties and maintain our professionalism when donning the uniform.” With a stable career and a high gross monthly salary, PC (APF) Ammar plans to save up and take a diploma in security management or police studies at a local polytechnic in the future.

These adjectives were certainly not what one would have used to describe PC (APF) Daniel Peh before he started NS in 2007. “I was once a rebellious gold-haired paikia who only knew how to get into fights. I even ponteng some of my ‘O’-level exams, simply because I didn’t feel like it,” says PC (APF) Daniel, laughing. As he did not have a full ‘O’-level certificate, he took on odd jobs at various supermarkets and fast-food outlets. However, the jobs lasted for only a month or so, as he often got fired for arriving late for work or for not turning up at all. “It was only when my parents started ignoring me that I realised that my actions had really disappointed my loved ones,” says PC (APF) Daniel. “I decided that I needed to turn my life around and enlisted myself in the army earlier, at 17 years old. NS was a life-changing experience as it not only built confidence but also instilled the value of discipline in me.”

We are often the first and last lines of defence for our borders,” says PC (APF) Daniel proudly. “My current role as a traffic marshal means that I attend to accidents on all major expressways. Despite the dangers of the job, I find it very meaningful and fulfilling when I get a chance to render assistance to those in need. “AETOS offers me the job stability that I need. Including allowances, I usually take home more than $3,000. With this regular income, I hope to further my studies in business management and to take up more responsibilities in the organisation in the future. I’m glad that I’ve finally found something worthwhile to do.”

Hold a dumbbell in each hand over your shoulders, with palms facing out and elbows pointing out to the side at shoulder height. Raise the dumbbells up past your head until elbows are straight, ensuring dumbbells do not touch each other. Slowly lower dumbbells until they almost touch your shoulders. Work up to 15 reps.

Place two dumbbells on the floor about shoulder-width apart. Lay on the floor in the up position of a pushup, with each hand on one weight. Pull one weight up towards the side of your body while balancing your weight on your other hand and feet. Hold for one second at the top and return the weight slowly to the starting position. Repeat with the other side. Work up to 25 reps on each side.

PLAYING A PART IN SECURING SINGAPORE AND OUR WAY OF LIFE
I
volunteer as a Fire Safety Enforcement Officer with the Singapore Civil Defence Force’s Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit. In early September, I also took on SGSecure duties to share, with HDB residents, ways in which to respond to threats of terrorism in the country. During our SGSecure training, we were introduced to the key SGSecure components. We also learnt how to engage the public professionally, especially during our door-to-door house visits. I have since attended two rounds of house visits and spoken to about 200 families. During these visits, we explain that the SGSecure movement is about staying alert, united and strong against terrorist threats. We also share ‘Run, Hide, Tell’ videos, which show residents what they should do in an attack, and ‘Press, Tie and Tell’ videos, which show how they can use improvised first-aid skills to help the injured. In addition, we tell residents about useful mobile apps, such as SGSecure, Police@SG and myResponder, which can be downloaded
for free from iTunes or Google Play. Generally, the public understands that a terrorist attack can happen in Singapore. Most of the residents agree they should be vigilant and must know how to prevent an attack and what to do when it happens. This understanding is important because the Home Team’s resources are limited. The latency between an attack and the Home Team’s response is
crucial. With more people prepared for an emergency, an attack may result in fewer fatalities. In addition, a resilient and harmonious community will help us get back on our feet more quickly after a crisis. And, most importantly, the fact that Singaporeans are strongly united will also serve as a deterrent against future attacks.

he Protective Security Command (ProCom) is a new specialist unit commissioned on 8 July 2016 amidst an evolving security landscape. Regarded as the leading SPF unit in Protective Security, ProCom fulfills three key security functions: protection of installations, strategic location protection, and events security. At the recent Singapore Grand Prix, an annual race on the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship (WDC) calendar, Protective Security Command (ProCom) officers were deployed to do
crowd control, guard access control points and watch for suspicious activity. In one instance, ProCom trooper NSPI Sean Saw Jun Kyle noticed two persons behaving suspiciously at a restricted area. The male subject was acting as a lookout while his female companion attempted to enter using someone else’s pass. The ProCom officers demonstrated their alertness, commitment and professionalism in responding swiftly to detain the duo and to establish the facts through a skillful interview. The subjects were then
handed over to the Duty Investigation Officer (IO) for further investigation. Said NSPI Sean Saw: “This deployment was a good experience for me. I was able to gain hands-on experience in dealing with a massive crowd and leading a team of PNS officers to conduct patrols in the various sectors, looking out for suspicious persons and items that could compromise the safety of members of the public and the event. It might seem like just another deployment, but through my work, I am serving members of the public.”

I’ve just extended my service through the Voluntary Extension Scheme. My new role encompasses mentoring NS leaders and exploring ways to involve PNSmen beyond their NS recalls in the recently launched SGSecure Movement. Interestingly, I am so involved in my PNS duties that I’m often teased about NS being like my second full-time job. Balancing the different aspects of my life is all about prioritisation and time management. I must credit my employer and colleagues, who are very accommodating, for allowing me the flexibility to balance and fulfil my work and PNS responsibilities. I also have a supportive family who sees the value of my NS contributions. However, I do make it a point to be with my son whenever he participates in or
travels for his bowling competitions. I want to make a difference in the areas I am passionate about, and where I can offer my expertise and also give back to society. A quote I cherish: Never get tired of doing little things for others. Sometimes, these little things occupy the biggest parts of their hearts.

was invited to this year’s F1 race as recognition for my contributions to the HomeTeamNS. One of my key achievements is leading the team that worked on the long-term strategic PNS masterplan. The goal is to better utilise PNS resources in meeting increasing SPF operational requirements in the present heightened security climate. In 2012, I was also part of the team that helped put together and present the HomeTeamNS Clubhouse Infrastructure Transformation Plan. I’ve attended every F1 Singapore Grand Prix since 2008, albeit in different capacities: police deployment in 2008 and 2009, and as a host for corporate guests in the other years. At this year’s F1 event, I had the opportunity to be in the company of three fellow officers: Wen Ting (CO, Pasir Ris NPC), Mark Chow (Head VSC, Delta Division) and Rahman Abrahim (Staff Officer, PNSD). We got a close-up view of the race track and the rare opportunity to mingle with some Cabinet Ministers, who gave us memorable words of encouragement and appreciation. NS has taught me to lead with compassion, to listen and to be a better and more effective communicator, and also to be flexible in adapting to changing scenarios. These qualities certainly apply in my role as the CFO of a luxury retailer and lifestyle company.

We must remain calm and tactful when dealing with patients and distressed relatives. We have to reassure them, administer emergency aid and ensure their safety. At the upcoming SGFPC, I will need to work as a team with my ambulance crew in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Challenge. The Challenge involves performing spinal management and Patient Assessment Model (PAM) for a victim who has fallen from height. I will be training intensively with my paramedic and EMT (regular) to perfect our skills and build our team dynamics. It is my first time participating and I certainly feel nervous. However, I am honoured to be representing my Division, and I will strive to do my mentor and colleagues proud. I hope our family and friends will support the firefighters and EMS personnel on 12 November!

participated in the Confined Space Challenge at the Singapore–Global Firefighters & Paramedics Challenge (SGFPC) last year, and I’m looking forward to taking part again this November. The challenge involves penetrating a metal slab using a battery-operated spreader cutter, setting up an A-frame tripod stand and using a Rollgliss rescue kit to lower the casualty. These are no easy feats, but it is the spirit of fun and competition that spurs my team and me to train hard and participate again. We hope family and friends will come down to SGFPC to support us!
