Top Tips with Chris Tutton WHAT TO LOOK FOR

WHEN SELECTING A USED VEHICLE

Choosing the right used vehicle can save you time, money and headaches, but only if you know what to look for before you sign on the dotted line. Here are Chris Tutton’s essential starting points for anyone looking to add a reliable used truck to their fleet:

1. Know Your Job Requirements

Before anything else, be clear on what the vehicle needs to do. Payload, body type, journey type, mileage expectations and working environment will shape the whole selection process.

2. Look for a Proven Service History

A well-documented maintenance record is one of the strongest indicators of a reliable used truck. Regular servicing, genuine parts and evidence of major repairs give you confidence in its past and its future.

3. Check Mileage vs. Usage

Mileage alone doesn’t tell the full story. Look at how the vehicle was used: long-haul motorway miles, multi-drop urban work or off-road construction all impact wear differently.

4.

Inspect

Condition Inside and Out

Corrosion, body damage, tyre condition and cab wear all reveal how a vehicle has been treated. A tidy interior and clean chassis often point to a well-managed fleet vehicle.

5. Assess Mechanical Health

Listen for unusual engine noises, check for leaks, review braking performance and inspect suspension components A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted technician is always worthwhile.

6. Confirm Compliance & Emissions

Ensure the vehicle meets the regulatory requirements for the areas you operate in especially LEZ/ULEZ standards and safety compliance

7. Consider Total Cost of Ownership

The purchase price is just the start. Factor in fuel efficiency, insurance, maintenance, parts availability and any upcoming service milestones.

8. Buy from a Trusted Source

A reputable dealer provides transparency, thorough checks, warranty options and expert support, all crucial for reducing risk and downtime

At the centre of Centurion’s service to MM Freight is Aaron Fletcher, the Contract Manager responsible for ensuring the fleet performs flawlessly 24/7, at home and overseas.

The Quiet Power of the Supply Chain:

How BV Dairy Keeps Freshness Moving and How Centurion Helps Make It Possible

Most of us walk through the chilled aisle without thinking twice. The yoghurt is always there. The cream is always cold. The soft cheese looks perfect, every single day. Behind that everyday reliability sits one of the most time-critical and demanding supply chains in British food production and dairies like BV Dairy think about it constantly so the public never has to.

Fresh dairy has almost no tolerance for delay. Timing is measured in minutes and temperature holds the final say on product quality. A breakdown before a bakery’s morning shift or a late delivery to a wholesaler can cause disruption far beyond the dairy itself. The work is essential, relentless and largely unseen, yet BV Dairy has been managing this rhythm in Shaftesbury for more than 60 years.

A Dairy With Heritage and a Relentless Eye on Tomorrow

BV Dairy, officially Blackmore Vale Farm Cream Ltd, combines deep agricultural roots with a highly coordinated modern logistics operation. Local farmers, long-standing supply relationships and a loyal workforce form the foundation of the business. Alongside that heritage sits data-led forecasting, precise temperature-controlled distribution and a team focused on efficiency at every stage. Their products are living foods that respond immediately to changes in temperature. Transport is not simply a method of moving them from A to B. It is a crucial part of maintaining product integrity.

Freshness Runs on a Clock that Never Stops

Why Contract Hire Matters More Than Many Realise

For BV Dairy, vehicles are not just assets. They are an extension of the product itself. If transport performance fails, the product suffers. Centurion has supported BV Dairy for more than five years, once as Falcon Vehicle Solutions and now with the same team, under the Centurion name.

Throughout that relationship the focus has always been on reliability and continuity.

When a large rental company collapsed during Covid and many operators were left with no clear options, Centurion stepped in so BV Dairy could maintain normal operations. Support of that kind strengthened a relationship that was already built on trust and a shared understanding of what temperature-critical transport really requires.

With long-term contract hire, BV Dairy benefits from:

No capital tied up in vehicles that sit outside its core business.

• A compliant, well-maintained fleet tailored to chilled distribution.

• Engineering support that understands the demands of dairy transport.

• Immediate action if a vehicle needs attention.

• Predictable costs and dependable uptime.

It is not simply about supplying vehicles. It is about removing uncertainty from a supply chain that cannot afford surprises.

Centurion Truck Rental

The Latest Additions: Comfort, Capability and Driver Approval

BV Dairy recently expanded its fleet with four DAF XF 480 FTG tractor units, with two DAF XD 340 FAR refrigerated rigids also on the way. All have been taken on five-year contract hire agreements through Centurion.

The choices were shaped by driver feedback. The team at BV Dairy worked closely with Centurion to select models that offer generous cab space, strong visibility and features that support long shifts on early morning chilled routes.

Harvey from BV Dairy says, “Working with CTR has been effortless. Their team is consistently friendly, approachable, and easy to deal with, which makes a huge difference day-to-day especially when I bring them challenges! The quality of service is bespoke, their turnaround times are quick, and the efforts around scheduling work has been a massive relief for us. Everything just gets handled without the usual hassle, and that reliability is exactly what you want from a rental partner.”

The People Who Keep the Cold Chain Moving

Behind every dependable delivery is a group of people whose work often goes unseen. BV Dairy relies on planners who manage hundreds of daily touchpoints, drivers who work within precise time windows, engineers who safeguard product temperature, farmers who supply the raw product and operations teams who keep the whole system moving. Their coordination is the reason the chilled aisle appears so effortless, even though the work behind it is anything but.

Centurion Truck Rental

The Changing World of Food Logistics

Chilled distribution is changing quickly. BV Dairy is adapting to new pressures including sustainability targets, packaging shifts, retailer requirements, greener fuels, route optimisation and emerging temperature-control technologies. What appears on Britain’s shelves is now closely connected to the strength and stability of the logistics behind it.

A Partnership Built on Commitment, Not Convenience

Centurion’s role in BV Dairy’s operation is based on consistency and an understanding of the bigger picture.

Contract Manager Darren Moore describes the relationship as one built on going further than the industry standard and being present when it matters most. That approach has helped the two companies work together through industry changes, acquisitions and fleet evolution.

Freshness at Scale and the Network That Makes It Happen

The dairy aisle might look calm and predictable, but the work behind it relies on precision, trust and a commitment to keeping everything moving. For Centurion, supporting BV Dairy means supporting one of the most important supply chains in the country. It is a partnership based on reliability and understanding and its impact reaches far beyond the chilled aisle.

Centurion Truck Rental

At Centurion Truck Rental, we know that great service keeps great businesses moving.

We’re grateful to receive this fantastic feedback from Gary Kitchen at The French Garden, who said:

“Fantastic company to work with helping our business grow with truck servicing and inspections.”

This latest contract hire vehicle looks superb in The French Garden’s fresh new livery, a perfect example of how a well-presented fleet supports a brand on the road.

Darren.moore@centuriontruckrental.co.uk

This DAF has already been out on the road with KOKA and after a successful initial period, it’s been back with us for an extended contract and a fresh new livery.

Our Business Development Manager, Andrea Etches, has supported KOKA throughout the process, ensuring the vehicle continues to meet their needs as their business grows.

A big thank you to RGVA Vehicle Graphics for the fantastic wrap, a quality finish for a quality brand.

KOKA is known for bringing authentic Singaporean flavours to the world since 1986 and we’re glad to continue supporting their journey with a vehicle that keeps their business moving.

From Field to Fleet: Celebrating 125 Years of Hammond Produce

Reaching 125 years in business is no small achievement, and this month Hammond Produce hit that milestone, a rare moment in any industry, especially one as demanding as British farming.

To mark the occasion, the team unveiled a set of anniversary trailers featuring a fresh, commemorative livery, supplied through Centurion Truck Rental. It’s a small but meaningful contribution to a business that has been feeding the nation for over a century.

Centurion’s relationship with Hammond Produce isn’t new and like all long-term partnerships, it works because of the people behind it.

A particular mention goes to Glenn Murphy and Ian Pattenden, who continue to support Hammond’s fleet with the steady, no-nonsense reliability that keeps operations moving every single day. Their work is a reminder that strong customer relationships aren’t built on announcements, they’re built on consistency.

A Day With Maurice Thornton: Maintenance and Engineering Manager

A Day in the Life of Exceptional Support: How Centurion’s Bespoke Service Keeps Customers Moving.

At Centurion Truck Rental, our customers often tell us that the reason they stay with us, year after year, is not just the trucks, trailers, or contract hire packages. It’s the people behind them It’s the tailored support, the on-the-ground care and the relationships we invest in.

Few embody that commitment better than Maurice Thornton, one of our Maintenance and Engineering Managers for key accounts. Maurice doesn’t just oversee engineering and compliance; he is a bridge between Centurion and some of our largest blue-chip customers, ensuring our bespoke contract hire solutions remain perfectly aligned with their day-to-day operational needs.

Recently, Maurice captured one of his business trips, a two-day hop across the UK and Ireland, to show just how hands-on Centurion’s support model truly is.

The trip begins at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, where Maurice and Oliver (Commercial Director) catch a morning flight to Belfast International. Upon landing, there’s no pause, only a quick hire car collection and a grab-and-go lunch before heading straight into the first meeting.

Strengthening Service Partnerships in Belfast

The first stop is Sapphire Vehicle Services, a long-standing partner and a crucial part of the Centurion ecosystem. Here, the men complete an end-of-year review and collaborate on the plan for 2026.

The goal? To ensure Sapphire Vehicle Service and Centurion remain perfectly aligned in delivering premium-quality service for shared customers. This type of proactive, face-to-face engagement is why customers trust our contracts, not just for the vehicles, but for the complete support framework that sits behind them

Day One: From Liverpool to Belfast and Straight Into Action

Dundalk: Collaboration Continues into the Evening

After a scenic early-evening drive to Dundalk, The gents grab the chance to stretch their legs along the coastline before the next meeting, this time with one of our trailer service suppliers and Stone Hardy, our trusted tail-lift service provider.

Even in the evening, the work continues The discussions centre around process improvements, service quality and collaborative planning, all geared toward keeping Centurion customers on the road without disruption

Day Two: Southbound to Dublin – Supporting Blue-Chip Partnerships

A crisp early morning walk sets the tone for day two, followed by a full Irish breakfast, fuel for the journey ahead.

Leadership qualities and communication techniques that helped them maintain stakeholder trust and organisational stability

Crossing South: Engagement at the Border

Mid-afternoon, Maurice and Oliver head south to Newry for an annual visit to Granco Ltd With warm hospitality and an equally warm welcome, the meeting focuses on ensuring full engagement, shared expectations and seamless service delivery.

Maurice also conducts a site inspection. This is another essential part of Centurion’s commitment to compliance It’s not enough for us to assume standards; we verify them, ensuring every vehicle under contract hire remains compliant, reliable and ready to perform.

Maurice and Oliver drive 1 5 hours south to Dublin to meet with major blue-chip customer for the annual service level review. These meetings are essential to maintaining longterm partnerships and ensuring our bespoke contract hire solutions evolve with customer needs

Once again, the collaboration is strong, communication is open and the shared commitment to quality is evident This is what sets Centurion apart: we don’t wait for our customers to come to us; we go to them. On site. In person Across borders, if necessary

After lunch, the return journey begins: a 2 5-hour drive north back to Belfast International, a quick pit-stop for food, then an 18:05 flight back to Liverpool and a final drive home

By 20:45, the men are home having completed over 500 miles of travel, four major service reviews, support for multiple suppliers, two cross-border journeys and countless conversations that strengthen our partnerships.

Why It Matters

Maurice and Oliver’s trip highlights what makes Centurion Truck Rental so unique:

Ask Our Experts 2026 Fleet Insights

A new year brings new challenges for transport operators. Centurion’s team of experts share their perspectives on how fleets can stay competitive, reduce risk, and maximise uptime in 2026.

Why Transport Operators Are Moving from Ownership to Usership in 2026

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a clear shift in the HGV and trailer market: operators are moving away from traditional ownership and towards a usership model. This isn’t about fashion or finance theory, it’s a practical response to how the industry now operates.

Capital is increasingly precious. Tying up large sums in depreciating assets limits flexibility at a time when compliance costs, wage pressure, fuel volatility and technology change are all accelerating. Usership models free up cash, improve balance sheet optics, and allow operators to deploy capital where it actually drives growth or resilience.

Risk transfer is another major driver. Residual values, maintenance spikes, downtime, emissions legislation and specification changes all sit with the owner under a traditional model. Under usership, much of that risk is pushed upstream, giving operators cost certainty and operational focus rather than asset management headaches

Just as importantly, fleet requirements are no longer static. Seasonal demand, contract churn, network changes and customer expectations mean fleets need to flex quickly. Usership allows operators to scale up, down, or sideways without being locked into assets that no longer fit the job.

Ownership may always have a place, but for many modern operators, usership is no longer a compromise. It’s a strategic choice that aligns fleets with how transport businesses actually need to perform today: agile, capital-efficient and focused on service rather than steel.

The Impact of Rising Vehicle Prices & Lead Times on Fleet Strategy

At Centurion, we’ve seen firsthand how the landscape for fleet planning has changed. Rising vehicle prices and extended lead times mean operators can’t afford to leave decisions until the last minute. Today, planning often starts 12–18 months ahead, with careful consideration of duty cycles, payloads, and seasonal peaks. Our customers tell us the same thing, they need vehicles that can adapt to operational changes throughout the contract period. With lead times stretching, getting the specification right first time is critical.

That’s where Centurion’s contract hire solutions come in. We help businesses access the latest vehicles without tying up capital, and we build flexibility into every agreement so fleets can evolve as needs change. In a market where resilience and foresight are essential, our goal is simple keep your operation moving, no matter what challenges come your way.

My advice start planning early, think long-term, and partner with a provider who understands your business. At Centurion, we’re here to make sure your fleet strategy works for you today and tomorrow.

The Hidden Costs of Vehicle Ownership

Many operators focus on purchase price, but real costs lie in maintenance, compliance, repairs, downtime, and depreciation. These hidden costs are often unpredictable and expensive.

“When a truck goes down, the cost isn’t just the repair bill. You’re losing revenue, wasting driver hours, and risking customer confidence. With contract hire, those risks are dramatically reduced.”

Centurion’s packages convert unpredictable expenses into a single fixed monthly cost, including servicing, maintenance, breakdown support, and compliance management.

Centurion

How Contract Hire Helps Operators Stay Competitive in 2026

Keeping Fleets Moving in 2026

“In a year where reliability and uptime matter more than ever, having the right service partner is critical. At Centurion our consistent support, technical expertise and fast response times help us keep our fleet moving and our risks down. Knowing you can rely on a provider who understands your operation makes a real difference day in, day out.”

Why Certainty of Cost Is the Most Valuable KPI in 2026

“Transport is demanding enough. Our customers shouldn’t be second-guessing what their fleet will cost them each month.

Centurion’s contract hire model provides absolute cost certainty, backed by a support structure they can rely on.”

Personalised contracts, fixed costs, and full lifecycle management give operators confidence to focus on service delivery and business growth.

Darren Moore – Sales & Engineering Manager

What Operators Should Ask Before Buying Their Next Vehicle

Before purchasing, operators should consider: Is the vehicle supported for its full lifecycle?

Can utilisation be sustained year-round?

Are maintenance, compliance, tyre, and repair costs fully understood?

How much risk are we willing to take on depreciation and disposal?

When these answers aren’t clear, contract hire is often the smarter choice, offering cost certainty, full support and reduced financial risk. In 2026, contract hire delivers the stability and flexibility ownership alone can’t match.

Aaron Fletcher - Operations Manager

The Hidden Costs of Vehicle Ownership

Many operators focus on purchase price, but real costs lie in maintenance, compliance, repairs, downtime, and depreciation. These hidden costs are often unpredictable and expensive.

Centurion’s packages convert unpredictable expenses into a single fixed monthly cost, including servicing, maintenance, breakdown support, and compliance management.

Why Contract Hire Makes Business Sense

“Over the past few years, more businesses are choosing contract hire for heavy vehicles. It keeps cash flow healthy, reduces risk, and avoids the depreciation headache — trucks can lose up to 50% of their value in three years

Why it works:

Lower upfront costs: Frees capital for other business needs. Fixed, predictable payments: Simplifies budgeting and covers VAT. Inclusive maintenance: Servicing, MOTs, tyres, and breakdown support included — so you can focus on your business, not the vehicles.”

A Family Affair: Centurion Supports the Fletcher Family Christmas Experience

This winter, the Fletcher family once again opened the gates to their farm for a truly authentic, family-friendly Christmas experience. Guests were invited to step behind the scenes, explore the working farm where much of their much-loved TV filming takes place, and enjoy an outdoorsy, festive atmosphere that felt refreshingly real. Alongside meeting Santa, visitors could browse and purchase high-quality meat produced directly from the family’s own animals, bringing farm-to-fork to life in the most genuine way.

The event was very much a hands-on family effort. Liz and Kelvin Fletcher, together with their children, were involved throughout. From planning and preparation to welcoming guests on the day. Adding to the family spirit was Centurion’s own Managing Director, Warren Fletcher, Kelvin’s father, who never misses a chance to roll up his sleeves and help out. Whether assisting behind the scenes or stepping in where needed at weekends, Warren is a familiar face at the event. This year, he was entrusted with an extra-special role: car park duty, proving that no job is too small, even for a semi-celebrity.

Centurion Truck Rental was proud to support the event by supplying a refrigerated vehicle, enabling the Fletcher family to store their meat produce safely on site and sell directly to visitors throughout the experience. It’s a great example of how Centurion’s refrigerated vans and trailers help businesses of all sizes operate smoothly, whether for seasonal events, specialist retail, or long-term operations where temperature control is critical.

The Christmas event was a resounding success, with attendees praising the authentic feel, relaxed outdoor setting and genuine family atmosphere, values that align closely with Centurion’s own. And with a new TV series on the horizon, the Centurion team will no doubt be watching closely, playing a familiar game of “spot the boss” to see if Warren makes another on-screen appearance. One thing’s for sure: whether on the farm, in the yard, or supporting customers nationwide, family and reliability remain at the heart of everything Centurion does.

Celebrating Growth at Bridgwater: Jordan’s Journey from Kickstart to Key Team Member

From day one, Jordan stood out Colleagues describe him as reliable, hardworking and always bringing a genuine positive energy to the depot It did not take long before everyone realised he was not just a good fit but a great addition to the Centurion family. His commitment and attitude have made him an integral part of the Bridgwater operation, and the team could not speak more highly of him.

Anyone who visits our Bridgwater depot will recognise the friendly face of Jordan Friend, a colleague whose journey perfectly reflects the spirit of progress and opportunity at Centurion. Jordan first joined the business through the post-COVID Kickstart employment scheme, which was created to help young people find their way at a time when opportunities were scarce What began as a sixmonth placement quickly became much more, both for Jordan and for the team who welcomed him

A reminder of Jordan’s early days still hangs proudly in Ben’s office: a photograph taken for a press piece about the Kickstart scheme shortly after he joined. Ben (Head of Implementation and Strategy) often reflects on how meaningful that moment was, especially after hearing that the Kickstart programme coordinator was moved to tears when she learned that Jordan had been taken on permanently. It was a moment that captured the true impact of the initiative and the potential that Jordan brought with him.

To mark how far both Jordan and the depot have come, photographer Mark Ballantyne was invited back to recreate that original photo. This time, the backdrop was one of our newly sign-written Centurion vehicles, a symbol of the growth and rebrand that has shaped our recent journey. Despite battling wind and rain, Mark delivered a fantastic image that echoes the pride, progress and unity of the first photograph.

This new picture represents far more than a before-and-after moment. It stands as a reminder of personal growth, new beginnings and the people who help make Centurion the company it is today. Jordan’s story is one we are proud to share, and one that reflects the dedication, teamwork and opportunity found across every part of our business.

Sam to The Rescue - A Night Shift Story from Centurion Bridgwater

Late-night callouts aren’t unusual for Sam, Centurion Bridgwater’s fleet maintenance technician, they’re just part of the job. This one came from a school coach stranded roadside, full of exhausted teenagers returning from a trip abroad. Warning lights were flashing on the dash, so Sam grabbed a spare bus and headed out into the night.

After nearly an hour’s drive, he diagnosed the fault, delivered the replacement coach, and prepared to bring the broken-down vehicle back. Then came the curveball: the driver had run out of legal driving hours.

“Are you driving it back?”he asked. Sam didn’t hesitate. He transferred every piece of luggage, ensured the students were safely onboard the replacement coach, then took the driver’s seat himself and guided a bus full of sleepy teenagers through the dark Somerset roads. As the recovery crew handled the original vehicle, Sam brought the kids home, tired, grateful and unaware of how close they came to being stuck all night.

By the end, Sam had handled the breakdown, delivered a coach, moved all the luggage, acted as an emergency driver and ensured every student got home safely.

That’s the Centurion spirit: stepping up, solving problems and going above and beyond when people need us most.

Karen’s Seasonal Growing Guide: Winter into Early Spring

(January–February)

Easing into the gardening year with gentle intention

The year begins quietly, with January offering the perfect moment to pause, plan and prepare. While the garden rests, you can enjoy the calm by sketching your ideas for the year ahead, ordering seeds, freshening up your beds with compost and giving tools a well-deserved clean. It’s also a lovely time to start a few hardy seeds indoors, sweet peas, chillies and early herbs are wonderful for lifting winter spirits.

As February arrives, the garden subtly begins to stir. Though the frosts linger, hope creeps in with longer days and the first signs of life This is your month for early sowings: tomatoes, leeks and broad beans can begin indoors while seed potatoes are chitted ready for planting. Pruning fruit bushes and tidying roses now will reward you beautifully come summer. Think of these months as the gentle warm-up before the real action begins.

The First Signs of Spring (March)

When the garden wakes up and so do we

March is the true turning point of the gardening year. The soil warms, buds swell and suddenly everything (including your to-do list) springs into life. This is the time to get hands back into the earth with enthusiasm but still a touch of patience.

Early potatoes can be planted now, along with hardy favourites like carrots, onions and broad beans. Under cover or indoors, sow annual flowers such as marigolds, cosmos and sunflowers for a colourful summer display. Give your borders a little feed, prune back winter damage and offer your lawn its first gentle trim of the year.

Plants that overwintered in pots will appreciate short trips outside on milder days just remember to whisk them back in if frost threatens March is all about encouragement, nurturing and enjoying those first proper hints of spring.
