OLDER AMERICANS MONTH: CHAMPION YOUR HEALTH!
May is Older Americans Month, a time to honor and celebrate the aging community. This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” from the Administration for Community Living (ACL), encourages older adults to take an active role in wellness, prevention, and long‑term independence. Championing your health means understanding your body, asking questions, staying informed, and making choices that support overall well‑being.

As we age, our bodies respond differently to medications, alcohol, and even common over‑the‑counter products, making it important to stay aware of what we consume. Across the country and in Alameda County, substance use among older adults is a growing concern, especially involving medications, alcohol, and opioids. In 2023–2024, Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services supported more than seven thousand adults with substance use disorders, including hundreds aged 60 and older. Chronic pain, isolation, changing health needs, sleep issues, and major life transitions can increase vulnerability— sometimes without individuals realizing it. You can champion your health by reviewing medications with a doctor or pharmacist, asking questions, exploring non‑medication pain options, seeking confidential help when concerned about alcohol or prescription use, staying socially connected, and using local screenings and programs. Make your health a priority—you can do it!
