News from the Humane Society of Broward County VCA Walk for the Animals Recap Pages 8-11

Spring 2026

From Your Board Chair

Dear Friends,

As we welcome the spring season I am filled with gratitude and pride for the remarkable community that surrounds and supports the Humane Society of Broward County. Your continued generosity and commitment make it possible for us to advance our mission and create brighter futures for the animals in our care.

I am especially pleased to share the tremendous success of this year’s VCA Walk for the Animals. With an ambitious goal of $535,000, our community came together in an extraordinary way—surpassing expectations and raising $595,925.79 as we go to print. This achievement is a testament to the compassion and dedication of every participant, donor, sponsor, and volunteer who made this milestone possible. The impact of these funds will be felt throughout the year, directly supporting lifesaving programs and services. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire organization I want to thank all who contributed and participated!

In addition to this success, we were honored to have been selected as the host site for the 2026 Animal Assisted Services

On the Cover: Pictured is adorable Thelma, who was featured on Local 10 News along with her sister, Louise. They were both adopted immediately after. Thelma’s new mom, Amy, drove up from Key Largo to bring her dream pup home. She’d always wanted a Pug--but only if he or she were a rescue pup.

International Conference which took place in mid-February. This prestigious gathering brought approximately 60 animalassisted service professionals from around the world to our organization, including several leading experts in the field. Hosting this conference not only recognizes the quality and innovation of our programs but also provides a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge and further strengthen the vital role animals play in enhancing human well-being. These accomplishments reflect more than organizational success—they represent the collective impact of a community that truly cares. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I extend my deepest thanks for your unwavering support. Your belief in our mission enables us to continue providing compassionate care, lifesaving services, and meaningful connections between people and animals.

We look forward to all that we will accomplish together in the months ahead.

Clinic Externing

Isabel Shashaty grew up in South Florida and is currently attending the Royal Veterinary School in London, England. She is the fourth student from RVC that HSBC has welcomed for a veterinary externship. The two weeks of hands-on experience Isabel received were a bonus for both her and the shelter!

Humane Traps Needed for TNR

Puppy Yoga!

The folks at Banesco USA are celebrating their 20th anniversary in the best way possible—by giving back with 20 Acts of Kindness. As one of their acts, they provided us with a massive supply of “I’m Adopted” stickers to announce each chosen animal’s good news. After delivering the stickers, they toured the shelter and spent time with the adoptable dogs and cats, while handing out treats to our long-termers along the way.

Hop Onto Zoom for Rabbit Seminars

Did you get a bunny at Easter time? Learn about rabbit behavior, rabbit health, creative housing, and more at our FREE virtual zoom seminar on Saturday May 23, from 10:30 to 11:30 am. To register, text or call Heather at underdogbehavior@gmail.com or 954.579.5101.

The HSBC provides more than 50 weekly spay and neuter surgeries for feral and outdoor cats brought to us by dedicated community trappers working to reduce feline overpopulation through TNR— Trap, Neuter, and Release. In March we hosted a Big Fix Day, and as this newsletter goes to print another is taking place. Combined, these two high-volume surgery days will sterilize more than 160 cats in our community.

We often hear from local residents who want to help a neighborhood cat get neutered but don’t have the means to safely trap them. To help meet this need, we’ve added humane cat traps to our Amazon Wish List; these will be loaned out as needed. Your donation of a humane trap helps prevent unwanted litters of kittens for years to come and improves the lives of homeless cats throughout Broward.

Scan the QR code to purchase and have a trap shipped directly to the HSBC, or go to Amazon. com to find our wish list.

Charitable Contribution

Many thanks to The Penny England Family Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward for its generous contribution of $1,300. These funds will be used to support our programs and services.

Additionally, the Community Foundation of Broward held a luncheon recently where they invited us to bring puppies as greeters for arriving guests. The event was for their legacy club members, several of whom have kindly directed funds for animal welfare.

The “down dog” position becomes “down puppy” when you’re taking a class at HSBC! We hosted a sold-out Puppy Yoga class in March, combining the relaxation and mindfulness of yoga with the playfulness of puppies. Adoptable furballs roamed the mats, distracting participants and drawing plenty of cuddles. Visit humanebroward.com under the “events” tab to learn about upcoming events.

Love Match

HSBC adoption staff, volunteers, and puppies had a ball for two days at the Miami Open tennis tournament in March! Adoptable pups frolicked in the players’ concierge area, providing plenty of licks and cuddles to both players and tournament guests. The Queen of Spain even stopped by to get her puppy fix. Several of the puppies were adopted by attendees.

We’re happy to report the following new homes found during December 2025, January and February 2026:

Cats: 232

Kittens: 303

Dogs: 404

Puppies: 175

Other: 39

Total: 1,153

Our Tours are Pawsome Being Erkle

The Little Pups Kids Club recently enjoyed a very special story time. After listening to The Cross-Eyed Kitten by Judith M. Ackerman—a tale of a young girl who chooses a kitten specifically because she is “different”—the children received a surprise visitor. Caroline Crane from our Education Team introduced the group to Erkle, her own cross-eyed rescue cat. Having previously been abandoned, Erkle has found a second chance at a life that isn’t just filled with love, but he gets to teach children a powerful lesson in accepting differences.

The story time was made extra-special when we saw the kids realize that what makes Erkle different is exactly what makes him wonderful. One young attendee even shared a special bond with Erkle, noting that she has crossed eyes too! It was a beautiful reminder that at the HSBC, we don’t just find homes for animals; we find friends who celebrate us for exactly who we are.

Eagle Scout Builds Summer Oasis

We are so excited to showcase our latest campus addition: custom-built shaded dog pools and wash stations! These were thoughtfully designed and constructed by Ian McKenzie of Troop #406 as part of his Eagle Scout Project.

After months of planning and with input from our Education and Behavior team, Ian and his troop delivered these incredible structures just in time for spring. Our larger pups immediately began enjoying the easy-access baths, and these will be a huge hit for our upcoming summer camp programs!

We commend Ian for his hard work and compassion in creating something that will have a lasting impact on our animals’ comfort.

Animal Assisted Therapy International Conference Converges at HSBC

HSBC was honored to host the 2026 Animal Assisted Services International Conference at the shelter in February. Our own Animal Assisted Therapy Program Manager, Katie Tutt, was pleased to welcome 60 attendees from the U.S. and across the world. Professionals from the clinical, educational, research, training, and animal welfare communities gathered for three days to focus on advancing excellence and collaboration in Animal Assisted Services (AAS).

The conference theme, The Science and Soul of Connection: Bridging Research, Intuition, and Practice, guided an immersive experience that balanced academic research with practical application. Throughout the three-day conference, participants explored how

to intentionally and ethically utilize the human–animal bond within these diverse AAS frameworks. Attendees not only deepened their understanding of research and best practices but also applied their knowledge through hands-on work with some of our wonderful shelter dogs. Beyond the formal presentations, the event fostered meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and connection among professionals committed to elevating the standards of AAS worldwide.

Attendees from as far as England, Norway, the Netherlands, Singapore, and Brazil gave consistently positive feedback, calling it one of the best, or possibly the very best, conferences they had attended. Comments noted the kindness of our staff and volunteers, and the welcoming atmosphere at our shelter. We are

extremely thankful for the opportunity to host this important gathering of AAS professionals.

Clinic Corner Backyard Dangers

As the weather warms up and we start spending more time in the pool and grilling in the backyard, it is important to remember to keep an eye on pets while they are outside with us. There are potential dangers in the backyard that pet owners should be aware of to avoid any accidental harm to their animals. …

Potential Intestinal Obstructions:

One of the most frequent problems dogs face in the backyard (and in the home) is eating objects that they cannot pass through their digestive tract normally. Some of the most common problem objects that vets see are mango pits, palm seeds, and mulch. If you are having a backyard party, another common culprit is corn cobs. When dogs eat things in the backyard that they cannot digest and are too big to pass through their digestive tract, they can become obstructed, which means that normal food and water cannot be processed and the animal most often begins vomiting and having diarrhea. If you are concerned that your animal may be obstructed, they need to be seen by a vet right away; many will need to have the item surgically removed.

Toxic plants:

Another concern that owners need to be aware of are toxic plants that are often used in landscaping. The most common toxic plant in South Florida is the sago palm. Sago palms, frequently used as decorative plants, can cause liver failure if an animal eats any small part of it. Other examples of common plants that can be fatal are azaleas, oleander, lilies, and lantana. While beautiful, these ornamental plants can cause a variety of problems including liver failure and cardiac arrest. Other common plants can lead to nonfatal drooling and vomiting. When considering adding new plants to your yard or having them in your home, make sure to do research on their pet safety and contact the ASPCA Poison Hotline at 888-4264435 if you believe your animal has eaten any of these plants. With any possible toxin exposure, all treatments need to happen as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Predators:

Small dogs and pocket pets, like rabbits, are at risk of being attacked by predators if left unattended. Hawks, for example, may see our beloved pets as prey. Even larger breed dogs can be in danger if there are alligators in a body of water nearby.

Other Critters:

In some cases, our own animal can be the predator and may eat smaller critters outside that can cause serious problems. Reptiles like iguanas and snakes can carry diseases like salmonella and botulism that pass to our dogs and cats if ingested. Parasites can also be passed on. A unique South Florida concern is Bufo toads, which excrete a toxin when that can cause sudden cardiac arrest if ingested by a dog. If exposed, the dog must receive immediate treatment at an ER facility.

To ensure the safety of our pets while still letting them be outdoors with us, we must be responsible and on alert for potential hazards. Animals should never be left outside unattended and yards must be inspected regularly to avoid exposure to any of these possibilities. If you feel that your animal has experienced one of these dangers, please seek medical assistance from a veterinarian before attempting any at-home remedies.

Beware! Common plants like Azalea and Sago palm are highly toxic to animals.
Beware of critters in the yard when your pets (or, in this case, a neighborhood feral cat) are nearby.

Volunteer Spotlight

Spotlight On: Kathie Corso

Started Volunteering: June 2024

Departments: Vaccine Clinic and Education

Animals at Home: Daisy, a 2024 HSBC adoptee. At nearly three years old now, Daisy is a shy, silly, stubborn, and much-loved member of the Corso family.

Favorite Part of Volunteering: “Five weeks after leaving Local 10 News, my ‘soul dog’ Kaysee, adopted from HSBC in December 2008, died after sixteen and a half beautiful years with us. It was in her honor that I went through volunteer orientation.

Both the vaccine clinic and Education Department allow me to meet and help people of all ages and expand their awareness about the incredible efforts of staff and volunteers at the Humane Society of Broward County. I am so grateful for the opportunity…this experience is melding my love of animals, kids, and pet owners, along with my desire to educate the community, all into one. Everyone should be so lucky!”

What the Animals Say: “Kathie brings a spark and a smile wherever she goes! She’s always super nice to the humans, and of course to all us animals, too. The rumor from the Vaccine Clinic is that she sometimes breaks into dance and surprises everyone! And for sure, when she’s running a kids’ group visit, she gives amazing presentations that have them really interested in learning about animals and the shelter. Kathie is just the best!”

We need Security Volunteers!

If you’re active or retired from military or law enforcement and want to help keep the animals safe, we would love to have you volunteer. Currently, we have eight openings for this position. We also need clinic volunteers to help clean and sanitize surgical instruments and prepare surgical packs according to veterinary guidelines. Visit humanebroward.com under the “Get Involved” tab to learn more.

WRecords Broken at VCA Walk for the Animals

Taylor Swift Story

ow! 2026 turned out to be a record-breaking year as we surpassed our goal of $535,000 to bring in a net total, as we go to print, of $595,925.79 for the animals! We are grateful, humbled, and so impressed by the outpouring of support and appreciation from our walkers and our community. Over 3,500 people (1,085 of whom were registered walkers) turned out at Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park in Fort Lauderdale on February 21, hundreds of them bringing their dogs of all shapes and sizes. We had 26 qualified Packs that walked, 150 volunteers that helped, and more than 40 highly supportive sponsors. All of that combined for a purely outstanding and memorable morning!

The hard work of the Top Individual Fundraisers certainly showed, as they tallied hard-to-believe sums: Shawn Taylor (first place) - $50,206; Laura Hogle (second place) - $24,205; and Peter Marzan (third place) - $20,312. In the Pack (team) category, PAWS set a record for the second year running, with their $155,568.08 earning them “Leader of the Packs” status. In

The 2026 Leader of the Packs, PAWS, broke their own record from last year by gathering an extraordinary $155,568.08 in donations! They were led by Shawn Taylor (back row, 2nd from right), Dina Mucci (seated, 2nd from left), and Sara Sears (not pictured).

second place was Stilish Paws with $47,307.63, and Teachers Pets took third place with $35,232. (All figures are as we go to print, as money may still be coming in!)

An online auction, Draws for Paws, also contributed to the Walk with over 130 generously donated items raising more than $8,500.

It is because of our Walk participants’ dedication to raising funds, our community coming together, and the support of our sponsors, that we are able to claim the 2026 VCA Walk for the Animals such a huge success. On behalf of the animals, thank you all!

Holiday Shopping with Heart

Hosted in December by Fratarcangeli Wealth Management, PAWS’ annual Holiday Shopping Bazaar was presented by M. Austin & Christine M. Forman. With its stunning location at the Fratarcangeli residence, the festive afternoon offered HSBC-supporting shoppers a tempting array of gift items and holiday décor to choose from. Event chairwomen Dawn Dellapina, Nicole Fratarcangeli, Susan Greaton, and Stacy Sager were delighted to share that the event raised more than $170,000 to benefit the shelter’s programs and services.

Arriving guests stopped to capture photos at the step-and-repeat before browsing the boutiques, each of which generously donated a portion of their proceeds to PAWS. The afternoon featured a lively poolside chat and an exciting fashion show presented by The Colonnade Outlets. Attendees also participated in an online auction and the always-popular Lucky Draw auction, adding to the day’s fundraising success. Guests also enjoyed relaxing massages and the chance to add a touch of sparkle to their look with whimsical fairy hair extensions.

Throughout the event there were delicious bites, festive cocktails, and live entertainment to savor. A heartwarming highlight was cuddling with adoptable animals at the mobile adoption area. The day concluded with fabulous swag bags, ensuring everyone left with a little extra holiday cheer.

In keeping with the “soiree blanche” theme, guests were dressed elegantly in white. Hello Humane Society,

Finn is thriving and living his very best life! He’s a total love bug and has happily claimed his spot in our family alongside his kitty brother Sunny and his poodle doggy brother Princeton. As you can see, Finn fits right in—snuggles, naps, and all.

We’re so grateful to HSBC for bringing this sweet boy into our home. Our family wouldn’t be the same without him!

With thanks and smiles,

Georgia Clancy Hollywood

Dear HSBC,

LPrinceton, Sunny and Finn

exie is such a blessing! Our neighbor, a retired Navy fighter pilot, sent us this picture that he made her up to look like a pilot! My husband is a retired pilot and we live on a private airport. Our experience at the HSBC was very positive! Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to all the ‘fur babies.’ I noticed in the ‘Paw Prints’ that one of your Board of Trustees was the late Judge Grevior. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale and remember that he was a friend of my dad’s. What a small world!

Dear HSBC,

Thank you, we are so grateful to have welcomed our sweet fur baby Creed into our family. Thank you for trusting us with such a special life and for all the love and care you gave to him before he came home to us. We love him.

To the Amazing Humane Society,

Iadopted a beautiful female cattle dog mix named Pumpkin in 2011. Pacha was scared and not sure how to “dog”… She didn’t understand toys, didn’t bark, and hid under the table…I decided she needed a friend. I looked on your site for weeks and in July 2012 I saw Ibiza, raced down, and fell in love instantly.

Over the years Ibiza taught Pacha how to have fun as a dog…Fast forward over 13 years, my girls have traveled the US with me and helped me through some horrible points in my life. Ibiza started having liver and kidney issues a few years ago and I did everything I could to maintain her happy lifestyle. Whatever the vet said to do, I did. However, on 11/24/25 I had to bring her to the vet and on 12/1/25 I decided that Ibiza needed to be freed from her pain. Ibiza was my soul dog, and everyone knew it.

I want to thank you for everything that you do. You provided me with two beautiful little girls who I love more than anything in this world. They are the one thing in my life that I knew I did good with. Pacha is learning to cope without her sister dog, and I am doing my best to give her lots of hugs and kisses. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Dear HSBC,

Tank has become a beloved part of our family and it feels like he was always part of us. He never turns down a meal or a treat, unless he’s busy enjoying his vitamin D time. He enjoys sitting in the sun by the lake and pool, and happily running around the yard with his brothers Loki and Stitch. He is wonderful with children and adores his new baby cousin Jaxson. Tank always welcomes a gentle cuddle and is quite happy being a 70-pound lap dog. While we’re sad that his previous family had to surrender him (we can see how hard that had to have been as he is such a lovable gentle pup), we are so beyond happy to have him as part of our family!

weet three-year-old Missy lost her home because her family had too many pets. Once her video was posted on January 17, it went viral with 1.1 million views on Instagram and Facebook alone! Missy’s new family flew from Port Jefferson Station, New York to adopt her and drive back home together (with a slight delay due to record snow up north).

Her first time around, Maddie had waited more than 400 days to get adopted. She was returned to the shelter when her owner became ill and could no longer care for her. To speed up her adoption timeframe, we shared her story on social media. With 1 million-plus views, Maddie found her new forever family—all the way in West Roxbury, Massachusetts! Her new dad, Jose, flew down and drove Maddie the 1,400 miles to her new home. Scan the QR code to see a happy Maddie.

Cupid’s arrows hit the mark for 62 animals during our annual Adopt a Sweetheart event in February. The weekend of the 14th and 15th brought dozens of prospective families to the shelter where the adoption fee for select animals was waived, and all animals one year and older were half price. There was also a sweet bake sale co-hosted by two of our volunteer groups -- Friends of Animals and the Teen Club. Love was definitely in the air!

Chained Pup Gets a Happy New Life

In mid-January a kind person brought in a Labrador mix they had found who had a large, heavy chain tightly affixed around her neck. She was also dragging eight feet of that chain behind her. We estimated her age to be about two years, and she weighed 68 pounds. We named her Lorelai.

There was a foul odor present, and upon inspection we could see that a link of the chain was embedded in the underside of her neck. She was placed under sedation so we could use bolt cutters to remove

the chain and scrub and flush the puncture-like wound. Antibiotics were administered and Lorelei was scheduled for a series of cold laser therapy treatments, which assist in healing.

It didn’t take long for this beautiful girl to find her big, new, loving family. Ten days after she came to us, Lorelai went home to Hollywood with the Fernandez family. Five kids to play and cuddle with—what more could a girl like her ask for?!

Eye Surgery for Coco

Eight-year-old Coco suffered from eyelid agenesis, also known as feline coloboma. The rare condition is a congenital defect in which the upper lateral eyelids do not develop in the womb. He also had secondary corneal irritation and infection, and dental disease. Our veterinary staff knew the best thing for Coco was bilateral enucleation—removal of both eyes—which would result in no more infections and an end to the pain and discomfort.

Surgery went well, after which Coco went to one of our foster families where his caretakers reported that he was the sweetest, gentlest cat, and while shy and nervous at first, he soon began to explore the house, moving around with ease and never stumbling into furniture. After two weeks of recovery in foster care, Coco went up for adoption and found his new home with Lesley in just one week. She tells us, “He is an angel!!! He purrs all day, he sleeps with me, and loves my daughter and mostly my elderly mother whom I take of. I couldn’t be more pleased to have him. He is so happy and a joy. My daughter named him Romeo, because of how handsome he is inside and out! WE LOVE HIM.”

Meeting his new mom, and a friend, was the best day ever!

Featuring warm and fuzzy shelter stories
The thick chain required bolt cutters for removal.
What a perfect family to spend the rest of her life with!
While she recovered, Lorelai received cold laser therapy to help heal the wound.
Handsome Coco, now named Romeo
