From Your Board Chair

Dear Friends,

As we move into another exciting season here at the Humane Society of Broward County, I want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible impact your support continues to have on the lives of the animals in our care.

One of the most heartwarming programs at our shelter is our volunteer foster care program. Thanks to the dedication of our compassionate foster families, hundreds of dogs and cats who require medical care, or simply need a little extra loving attention, are able to heal and thrive in nurturing home environments before they are ready to find their forever families. These volunteers open both their hearts and their homes, and their commitment makes all the difference.

In our previous issue of Paw Prints we shared the success of our Benny’s Buddies pet adoption program initiated by Florida Panthers hockey player Sam Bennett and his wife Zoe. We were thrilled in September when Sam and Zoe stopped by the shelter with the beautiful Stanley Cup trophy! We are grateful to them for taking the time to provide us with the opportunity to spotlight the HSBC

On the Cover: Betty was just six weeks old when she was surrendered to us. She’d been a gift to an elderly couple, who realized her energy level and the care she required were more than they could manage. Too young to go up for adoption, she went to foster care until she was old enough to find her permanent home. Now one and a half years old, Betty lives in Fort Lauderdale with her French Bulldog brothers, also adopted from the shelter.

Clinic Welcomes Teen Volunteers

This summer, nine participants of our teen volunteer program were invited to spend a memorable day in the clinic. During this immersive experience they observed live surgeries, interacted with our medical team, assisted Vet Techs in surgery prep and medical exams, and learned about dental procedures. It was a rewarding experience for all! (Notably, some have already been accepted into pre-vet programs at the University of Florida.)

Congratulations to Marissa, Savannah, ToniAnne, Bella, Caitlin, Valerie, Zoey, and teen clinic volunteer Ashlyn for their dedication to the animals.

Young YouTube Stars Visit

The Vlad & Niki show, a global sensation among preschoolers that has become the highest-rated kids’ channel on YouTube, began in 2018 as a showcase for the adventures of brothers Vlad and Niki. With more than 456 million subscribers, the show blends live action, animation, and music to entertain its young audience. Recently the HSBC had a visit from some of the show’s stars to film an episode that focused on kindness toward animals and the importance of helping them.

A Decade of Diamond in the Ruff

Paw Pathway Commemorative Bricks

Since its launch in 2015, the Diamond in the Ruff program has facilitated the adoption of some 400 animals. Sponsored by J.R. Dunn Jewelers, the program highlights animals who have been waiting for their new homes without having much luck. Before being featured, these cats and dogs spent an average of 59 days in the shelter, with some waiting up to 150 days. Once highlighted as Diamonds in the Ruff, the average wait for adoption decreased to just 26 days, and many found homes within a week of their sponsorship. Our friends at J.R. Dunn underwrite the adoption fees of all Diamond in the Ruff animals. What a success this partnership has had over the last ten years!

Neglected Dog Inspires

Animal-loving Marcos Areces has been attending HSBC camps for three years -- since he was just six years old. Last year, a particular dog pulled hard at his heartstrings. Theodore was brought to the shelter in horrible condition – emaciated, with overgrown nails and a thin, patchy coat. Marcos focused all his camp time on Theo while clinic staff nursed the dog back to health. Theodore was then adopted.

Marcos was so impacted by Theo that he was inspired to build a school lesson to teach other students about pet adoption, overpopulation, and responsibility. He planned a Zoom program with our Education Department where all students participated, and interviewed our VP of Education, Caroline Crane, about the shelter. He then wrote an amazing report that was published in SQMS newspaper, which is printed by the SunSentinel for the Broward County School System. Marcos has truly impressed us with his compassion, dedication, and sense of purpose on behalf of the animals. “I am so proud of Marcos for taking his compassion for animals and teaching others,” said Caroline. “He’s working toward our goal of spreading the word so we can make a difference in the lives of animals.”

IA Poet with a Purpose

Eight-year-old Harry Lundy set up a “Poems 4 Paws” stand at the front of his neighborhood to raise money for the HSBC. His mom wrote us, “He offered to write custom poems on any topic for a “pay what you wish” donation. In less than two hours, he raised $165, all while sitting outside in the sun with a big smile on his face!” She added that Harry is excited to keep going and continue raising money.

We are so touched. Harry’s creativity, empathy, and generous spirit are certainly qualities to be admired!

Pictured at his poetry stand, Harry is all smiles – and heart.

Paws Pop-Up

Join our Friends of Animals Club for Paws Pop-Up, a holiday arts and crafts fair, at the shelter on Saturday, November 8. The fun starts at 10:30 a.m. and runs until 2:00 p.m., with a variety of unique vendors ready to help you get your holiday shopping started! Our Teen Club will be fundraising as well, selling hot dogs, veggie dogs, and treats and refreshments.

f you’re looking for a warm and wonderful family experience that gives back, look no further than our Family Camp. You and your loved ones will spend an enriching day learning about the Humane Society, promoting our longtime residents by creating adoption posters, making treats for the animals, and spending plenty of play time with our animals that are up for adoption.

Camp takes place upstairs at the shelter on Tuesday, November 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The $40 per camper fee includes a pizza lunch. Children must be six years or older, with no more than two children per adult. Register today at humanebroward.com under the Youth Programs tab.

By supporting this annual event, you are helping the animals in our care! For more information, contact dfeldman@hsbroward.com.

Your Birthday with the Animals

out how to have your birthday party at the Humane Society! Here are the birthday celebrations held at the shelter in June, July, and

Animal Assisted Therapy

Pet therapy teams attended two events this summer, in partnership with Catholic Hospice and Camp Erin. It’s heartwarming to see the joy and comfort they bring to everyone they meet, especially during the most difficult of times. Maui, pictured here, brought smiles to the faces of the families she met at Camp Erin Family Camp, held in June, and at the Camp Erin Reunion in July.

The non-judgmental presence of a dog can be exactly what nervous children need to overcome their fears and flourish as readers. The attentive (and long) ears of Beau the Basset hound and Zoe the Shih tzu help many readers at North Regional Library work on their reading skills during Wags & Tales sessions. The Wags & Tales Reading Program is offered at multiple Broward County Libraries and some Broward County Schools.

Newly certified and ready to get to work, June wasted no time offering herself up for therapeutic belly rubs from clients at the Foundation for Independent Living (FIL). Alongside her handler, Amanda, this sweet new addition to the AAT gang shadowed one of our mentor teams as they began their journey in pet therapy. It’s already clear that June has the perfect temperament for this important work.

Therapy Team Highlight: Linda & Daisy

Linda and Daisy joined the HSBC Animal Assisted Therapy Program in January 2023. With Linda’s passion for helping the community and Daisy’s sweet, gentle demeanor, they quickly became a valued team. The two visit seniors at Veranda Club weekly, bring stress relief to Nova Southeastern University students, and make time for several other facilities each month. Linda’s dedication to the HSBC and the Animal Assisted Therapy Program shines through in all she does, and we are fortunate to have them on our team.

Clinic Corner

Vets Teaching Vets

For decades, the overpopulation of homeless dogs and cats has been an ongoing problem. The most obvious way that our organization can help is by spaying and neutering as many animals as possible, whether they be our animals that are adopted out, or through our low-cost services for owned companion animals. However, there are other ways the HSBC fights overpopulation, including educating other veterinarians and veterinary students on how to efficiently perform procedures.

Most newly graduated veterinarians have only performed a handful of procedures and then go on to join practices that do a few sterilization surgeries per week. This low number of procedures can cause doctors to feel inexperienced and underqualified to perform these routine surgeries, and they may shy away from them. At HSBC, we see this as an opportunity to help educate veterinarians and grow our team as well.

New doctors seeking experience spend days (or weeks) with our clinic team to receive training on surgical techniques and supervised surgical practice, thereby building their knowledge and confidence in the operating room. This allows them to go back to their own patients and provide the surgeries they need -- and lessens the need for our programs, too.

Another way we educate is through externships for veterinary students before they graduate. Each year we host around eight students from all over the country, and even a few from international veterinary schools. The student spends at least two weeks with us, receiving school credit in learning surgical techniques and shelterbased medicine.

HSBC veterinarian Dr. Rogers, in surgery with our long-term relief veterinarian, Dr. Judy.

One of our per diem veterinarians, Dr. Rose, is a longtime proponent of our externship program and sees the impact it makes in general practice. “Vet school provides a barrage of textbook and ivory tower learning for future veterinarians,” she says. “This can make the transition into practice really daunting.” She notes that the externship program at HSBC provides real-life hard luck cases, extended surgical training, and a front seat view to the complexities of shelter medicine. “Over my years at HSBC, I’ve had the privilege of assisting in the training of many fine veterinary students. It’s an amazing feeling seeing their eyes light up when they can put their knowledge to use in real-world cases. This type of mentorship benefits both the student and the teacher, as it renews our love of veterinary medicine a little more with each interaction.”

The impact of HSBC’s efforts in helping to train future vets sends ripples out far and wide. Dr. Rose knows of HSBC extern graduates practicing and teaching vet med all over the world. “These lessons are essential to producing well-rounded veterinarians that can truly impact veterinary medicine for a better future for animals AND the people that love them,” says Dr. Rose.

Access to care is a growing problem. HSBC pledges to continue working to help educate and provide experience to our community of veterinarians, so that they are equipped to help wherever possible and provide a spectrum of care for any budget, including sterilization and routine procedures.

Dr. Brianna Chin came to us from St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies.

A Memorable Day: the Stanley Cup Visits HSBC

When the Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup for an incredible second year running, we had our fingers and paws crossed that the iconic trophy would make its way to the HSBC for a visit. It’s a big ask, as each member of the Panthers organization gets just one day to enjoy possession of the Cup. Then Benny’s Buddies founders #9 Sam Bennett and his wife Zoe headed to Canada where, understandably, they decided to arrange to have their families participate in that honor and the Stanley Cup was Ontariobound.

Imagine our surprise when, on September 10, Braden Birch, the Panthers’ Director of Hockey Operations & Salary Cap Management, shared his Cup time with the Bennetts so that they could bring it to the HSBC. There was one condition -- Braden wanted to meet puppies. Well, we had him covered, as there were plenty of puppies just waiting for a cuddle!

It was an exhilarating day for everyone at the shelter, with Sam coming through the front doors with the Stanley Cup held high over

his head. After pausing to bestow it with a kiss, he was greeted by staff, volunteers, and lots of media.

During the couple’s visit Sam introduced the last three pets to be featured as the previous season’s Benny’s Buddies. (For each goal Sam scored last season, Benny’s Buddies underwrote the adoption fee for a dog or cat. This will continue when the Panthers take on their first opponent of the ’25-’26 season on October 7.) Sam also thanked his teammates for their enthusiastic support, and he and Zoe are excited that there will be eight more years of Benny’s Buddies! We’re also thrilled to share that production is planned for the much-sought-after Benny’s Buddies merchandise; we’ll announce availability just as soon as we can.

Follow the Florida Panthers and Benny’s Buddies on social media to stay up to date on all the latest in the scoring of goals, and of happy new homes!

There was plenty of media coverage for Sam’s Stanley Cup visit at the shelter.

Saving Lives and Fostering New Homes

Fostering a shelter animal is something we can all admire. Opening one’s home and heart so that a dog or cat can have a better chance at finding its forever home is a noble venture. And you may be thinking, “I could never foster! I’d fall in love and want to keep them all.” Well, our foster families do fall in love, which is why the care they give is so special. They usually fall head-over-heals, knowing that that love will enable their furry charge to grow, or recover, or become well-adjusted….and then move on to the lucky family who waits for them, somewhere out there, soon to be discovered. And the foster family moves on to the next lucky little soul to nurture and usher into the next chapter of life. There is certainly a degree of selflessness to fostering.

We value our foster families for their compassion, willingness to help, and time spent – among other amazing qualities. They are critically important to saving lives. And we need more of them, always! Hopefully this article will encourage some potential foster parents to consider joining the team.

What is required of a foster parent or family, aside from the obvious – a love for animals, a responsible nature, and a home where pets are welcome for their temporary stay? They must be 18 or over and live in a home in Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach County where animals are allowed. (Teens may work with a parent to earn service hours, but the application and all communication must be submitted by the adult volunteer.) There are no costs involved, and all food, medication, and litter for cats will be provided.

There are different types of foster situations – those for animals with medical needs, for puppies and kittens too young for adoption, and for adult animals that are having trouble in the shelter setting and need some extra TLC in order to thrive.

Adult Foster Program

Some animals are shy, nervous, or just plain sad being in the shelter with all its unfamiliar sounds, smells, and not-like-home environment. These dogs (and sometimes cats) do much better in a foster home where they can adjust to their new life situation and find a new family, with the networking help of the Adult Foster Volunteer. Select animals that are chosen for Adult Foster Care are spayed or neutered and receive their vaccinations before going into foster. They also receive an “Adopt Me” vest to wear, and we encourage foster parents to take them out and about to parks, events, restaurants -- wherever -- so potential adopters can see that they’re in need of permanent homes. Adult Fosters also promote their charges on social media and through friends or business contacts. They are an important part of the process! Once they find a good fit for their foster, the HSBC processes the paperwork and the animal goes straight to its new home – not back to the shelter. These volunteers also provide much-needed support for companion animals that need training, medical care, or socialization.

Medical Foster Program

These animals are either recovering from surgery or receiving medication and other treatment, and may need both in-home care as well as periodic visits to the shelter clinic before they are fully recovered and can return to our shelter for adoption.

Vet Tech Alyssa Weldon takes a kitten with suspected ringworm to the clinic for evaluation.

Ladybug and Bumble Bee were brought to us so emaciated that one of them could barely stand. They both required hand feeding and a blood transfusion, spending a month in foster care on a feeding program. It’s obvious from the “after” photo that the TLC they received while in foster care really did the trick! Happily, they were both adopted within days of returning to the shelter.

Baby Foster Program

We are in dire need of fosters for our littlest homeless animals! Usually, Mom is there as well, but sometimes the little one will need bottle care and more individual attention. Kittens and puppies typically need to stay in foster care until they’re eight weeks of age, with kittens requiring a minimum weight of 1.7 lbs. After that, the little ones (and Mom) return to the shelter for adoption.

This little mommy and her kittens needed seven weeks of quiet care before they were all ready for adoption.

This itty-bitty kitty weighed a mere .73 pounds when she was brought to the shelter. Estimated to be three weeks old and too young to eat on her own, she was kept warm in an incubator and fed by staff every few hours until a foster home was secured.

Vet Tech Anny Prats does the honors here.

Dunkin entered foster care at three weeks old. Over the next several weeks he blossomed into an adorable, healthy kitten.

While in foster care, kittens like this one (pictured with Vet Tech Tiffany Lucero) will come in periodically for health re-checks.

Foster Family fun! Ronel and her son Ettienne are excited to bring their new foster pups home and get acquainted.

Foster Care Program applications are available at humanebroward.com under the “Get Involved” tab. It is important to know:

• All four steps detailed on our website must be completed before a foster application can be considered.

• Foster Families must be open to administering medication if needed, and must keep our foster team informed of any medical or behavioral changes.

• Foster pets may sometimes need care post-surgery, or with minor health issues or grooming needs.

• Owned pets must be spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccines.

• We ask our Foster Families to be open to helping pets that need extra care and nurturing.

Volunteer Spotlight

Spotlight On: Sonja Azim

Started Volunteering: March 2025

Departments: Animal Care Kennels, with Teen Supervisor Duties

Pets at Home: Five dogs, one of which is an HSBC adoptee; the others are rescues from various sources. They are: Brandy, Saint, and littermates Bruiser, Brownie, and Louis V.

Favorite Part of Volunteering: “I get to help people find the companion that they are looking for. And when I see the “I’m adopted” sign on the kennels, it makes me smile more than anything because now those pets can find love in their forever homes. I like volunteering because I feel like I can give a little bit back to help our community working with the teens (I’m a teacher) and helping the animals.”

What the Animals Say: “Sonja has the most amazing, welcoming personality! That’s part of why she’s so great with the teens. Plus, we hear she is an educator, so she knows how to be smart and get her information across to others. We can tell how much she loves working with the teenager volunteers, and she’s super patient with ALL of us. That’s important! We feel so cared for and appreciated for who we are, and we can tell the teens do, too. Sonja also works hard at not bringing all of us home to live with her! She uses something they call ‘restraint.’ Before Sonja came to us, we had never had a teen supervisor in the kennels, and things just roll so smoothly when she is here. She’s an important part of the program, for sure!”

We need Security Volunteers!

If you’re active or retired from military or law enforcement and want to help keep the animals safe, we would love to have you volunteer. We also need clinic volunteers to help clean and sanitize surgical instruments and prepare surgical packs according to veterinary guidelines. Visit humanebroward.com under the “Get Involved” tab to learn more.

TB & Training and Behavior

House training may be one of the most important things a puppy learns. If given a choice your pup may have accidents, and this is a pitfall we want to avoid. If allowed to make mistakes routinely your pet will soon develop a habit, and training will be frustrating and confusing for him. The goal is simple: you want your pet to readily and consistently eliminate outside. We can get that done in eight easy steps!

1. SUPERVISION – If your dog cannot be 100% supervised then he should be in a long-term confinement area, like a kitchen with a baby gate, or his crate. You could also keep him close using a leash hooked around your waist. Keeping an eye on things helps to eliminate accidents and will make house training quick and easy.

2. ELIMINATE ACCIDENTS – Eliminate accidents by supervising your pet. Supervision while in the home will also help curtail other behavior problems like chewing inappropriate items.

3. DEVELOP A ROUTINE – Dogs thrive on routine. Developing a routine for feeding and eliminating will set a schedule and start a good habit. Meals should be fed around the same time each day, with three times a day for puppies and twice a day for adults. Vary feeding times to reduce stress and expectation behaviors. Feeding in the morning and in the evening for adult dogs (but not at exactly the same time every day) will create better behavior in your pet’s routine. Once the food is put down, allow 10 to 15 minutes to eat and then pick up what remains. The routine should also include going outside to eliminate. The general expectation for when a dog will have to go is 30 minutes or so after eating or drinking, when he wakes up (even from a nap), and after play or exercise.

4. ELIMINATE ON COMMAND – This is a very important part of the plan. When your pet is outside during house training he should always be accompanied and be on lead. Use a command such as “hurry,” “go potty,” or whatever you choose, as long as it is the same cue each time. Select an area of the yard to be the bathroom and stay in that spot. Walking around and smelling the flowers can be a source of distraction.

• Patience, patience. patience. From our

House Training 101 the Positive Way

voice (“you want to go outside?”) and immediately take the puppy outside. Praise him and offer a food reward when he eliminates there.

8. CLEAN UP – This step is very important. Odors left on the floor are like a big sign saying, “go here, go here!” Always use an enzyme cleaner to get rid of odors and stains. These can be found at a local pet supply store, your veterinarian, or at the HSBC Pet Boutique.

Helpful hints:

• If you don’t have a yard, you can still pick a bathroom spot. Dogs like going for walks, and if the walk is over as soon as they go to the bathroom then they will likely hold out as long as they can in order to extend the walk, often not eliminating completely, if at all. Use the bathroom spot first and offer a food reward -- then your pet gets a double whammy reward by going for a walk.

• Some people cut corners by waiting at the door with a treat, and once the dog comes inside he gets the treat. From the dog’s point of view, you have just rewarded him for coming back to the door and coming in -- not for eliminating outside. It is important to be with your pet in the yard and deliver the treat within three seconds of the desired behavior.

• It’s critical to give a new puppy plenty of opportunities to go outside. You would be amazed at how many times a puppy will have to go! The frequency can be reduced as your puppy gets older.

• A general rule of thumb for puppies is that they can only hold it about one hour for every month of age, plus one. So, if you have a three-month-old puppy he will only be able to hold it for about four hours. As your puppy gets older his bladder and bowel control will increase.

• If you have a teacup or miniature breed, their organs are small too. The ability to hold it for extended periods is very limited, so they need to eliminate frequently simply because they are too small to hold much.

5. REWARD – When your puppy goes, verbally praise him and offer a food treat. The food reward should be a high value item like a small piece of cheese, hot dog, or freeze-dried liver. The treat must be delivered within three seconds of eliminating in order to reinforce the behavior. Be careful that verbal praise is not too exciting and interrupts elimination.

6. BE CONSISTENT – Continue your training daily. Do not skip a day, vary the routine, or change the command. Changes or lapses will be confusing and house training will take longer. Most puppies will need at least 21 days straight without any accidents to have training solidly in place, and you may want to push that to 30 days in case you may have missed an unknown accident. Some remedial training may be necessary if the puppy is stressed or the routine changes.

7. NO PUNISHMENT – It just does not work! Punishing your pet after the fact may even damage your emotional bond and he may become afraid of you, or afraid to eliminate in front of you. If you catch your puppy in the act indoors, interrupt him with a loud HEY and clap your hands. This is not yelling at or verbally reprimanding your pet; it is simply interrupting the undesired behavior. Then lose the upset attitude about having caught your puppy making a mistake, and use an upbeat

• If problems occur and accidents are difficult to overcome, ensure a clean bill of health with a trip to your veterinarian.

Hello,

It has been a year since we adopted Alice. She is doing wonderfully; she has lost a bit of her excess weight, and we continue to work on the rest with a semi-raw diet and lots of play. Her kitty little brothers, Buddy and Binx (both 2 years old) have come to see her as a gentle but stern older sister. She grooms them but isn’t shy to give them a pap if they get too rambunctious. She loves to go out on the catio to chase small lizards and sun herself in the morning. Although she is too much of a diva to go through the cat door and insists on the door being opened for her! We are so happy to have added to our family, she brings us so much joy!

Bigmanny33 tells us, “Drew is loving life with a family!”

Dear Humane Society,

Iwanted to share an update on a puppy that we rescued in March. We actually went that day just to look at puppies with no intentions of bringing one home!

The moment my husband saw Oakley, he wept. Oakley was scared, huddled in a corner, shivering with his back to the door and wouldn’t turn around. We couldn’t even put a leash on him to bring him home. Once we got home, we took him in the backyard and in his panic and fear, he wiggled off the leash and went running, dove into our lake and swam away! My daughter ran next door, grabbed a canoe and their broom (there was no oar) and paddled around the canal, looking for the dog.

Oakley

Her girlfriend and I drove around the neighborhood screaming for Oakley. Fortunately, our neighbors gathered, and we found him in somebody’s backyard. They were able to lure him into their arms and bring him back on the boat! Since that day, I cannot tell you how amazing it has been to be his mom. He has brought so much joy to us. He’s still a little shy, but nowhere near the scared little pup we brought home.

Thanks again for caring enough to find these little puppies and take care of them until they find their forever homes ♥

Hi,

We adopted Chloe in February. She was very anxious in the shelter, and would not leave her kennel. She was on anxiety meds and just shivered. She feels at home now and comes with me to the office. She is an angel! She is also a service dog, and travels with us all over the world. These are photos of her in Austria and Slovakia. We thought that’s a cool story to share ♥

Eric and Claudia

Hello,

We adopted Puma in October of last year and wanted to give y’all an update! She’s doing so amazing. She has settled in and started to bond deeper with her sister, and she has done really well with training. She’s taught us a lot about unconditional love, and she fills our home with laughs and a TON of kisses. We love her so much. Mya (mc.beenie)

Nathaniel was very shy at the shelter, which is likely the reason he waited two months to be adopted. His new family wrote to say, “Rachel and I wanted to reach out and say that Nathaniel has been doing amazing! He is already so happy and comfortable in our home. It was meant to be!! We are still thinking about what to rename him!”

Dear Humane Society Team,

I’m writing to share our personal story and a message we hope will inspire others to open their hearts and homes to shelter animals.

On February 14 we adopted Buster (formerly Johnny), a 7-monthold mixed breed with a spirit as bright as his eyes. From the moment we met, we knew he was special. He’s playful, affectionate, and full of personality. Every day with him is a reminder of how much joy and companionship a rescue pet can bring. Before adopting, we had no idea how deeply rewarding the experience would be. Buster has not only become a beloved member of our family, but he’s also shown us the resilience and love that shelter animals carry within them. He’s proof that the perfect pet doesn’t have to come from a breeder—it can be waiting patiently in a shelter, just hoping for a second chance.

We hope his story encourages others to consider adoption—not just as a kind act, but as a life-changing decision. Thank you for all the work you do to protect and care for animals like Buster. We are forever grateful.

Warmly,

Denise Guertin and Richard Lemieux Hollywood

Four-year-old Macaroon was a transfer from the Broward County shelter where he was having no luck finding a home. That changed quickly when a video was created and shared on our social media platforms. Macaroon’s story went viral, racking up 5.5 million views in total. Best of all, his new mom saw him on TikTok, then drove from Tampa to adopt him.

Be sure to like and share our posts; it really does make a difference in finding homes for our animals.

Nathaniel, out for a ride and enjoying his new life.

Featuring warm and fuzzy shelter stories

Hopping into a Happy New Home

Oreo the rabbit was surrendered to us in early August because his family was moving. When our clinic staff assessed him, they saw that he had focal alopecia, a condition characterized by spotty hair loss. There are many potential causes, and some can be very irritating and painful. Oreo was also not putting any weight on his right front leg, and it was painful to the touch. When medication didn’t help to ease the pain and then Oreo began gnawing at the leg, our veterinarian decided that amputation was necessary. Post surgery, our patient was greatly improved. Within 24 hours he was eating well and taking his pain medication like a champ!

Now all Oreo needed was the perfect adopter to take him home, and Instagram helped to make the love connection. Oreo’s future mom saw his IG post and knew he would be the right fit; the family already had a tripod bunny at home and had been looking for a rabbit friend to bond with theirs. To top things off, Oreo’s new dad is an exotic vet, so we knew our boy would be in the best of hands.

An Unexpected Reunion

Seven-year-old King came to the shelter in July after someone found him in their yard. Fortunately, the super-sweet fellow was microchipped, and the chip was registered. We contacted Frederick, the registered owner, and he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. It turns out King had been stolen from him several years ago when he was living in South Florida; he now lives in Orlando. Happy to hear he’d have his boy back, Frederick drove to pick him up, and they headed home together.

gets a kiss and a pet before heading home.

Emily the Benny’s Buddy

Sweet Emily came to us from a shelter in Okeechobee that was overwhelmed with felines who were not getting adopted. They reached out to us for help, and, thankfully, we had space available and were able to transport some of their cats.

Emily was selected as a Benny’s Buddy and when she appeared as our Pet of the Week on Local 10, her mom-to-be was watching. Her beloved cat had recently passed away, and Juana’s heart was in need of rescue -- and so was Emily. It was meant to be.

Oreo
Emily, a Benny’s Buddy, was adopted after she was featured on WPLG Local 10.
