The front porch. It’s child safe, fantastic view of the Columbia River, perfect location for 4th of July fireworks observation. Also, the northeast bedroom window offers what we believe is the best view in the home. The living room has always been our favorite gathering space, too

Who designed your home?

We believe the original 1904 home is a Sears kit home that was shipped to the property by railway During various remodeling projects over the years, identification numbers were discovered on the back of the original moldings, supporting its historic craftsmanship and character. The ADU was thoughtfully designed and built in 2008 by Robert Rutledge.

Can you outline the history of your home?

The home was purchased in 1969 by Rose Crown Miller, a recent widow raising three children. She lived in the home until 1982, after her children were grown. In 1986, her daughter and son-in-law moved into the home, where they raised their own family and have lovingly cared for the property ever since. Over the years, the home became a cherished gathering place for both immediate and extended family, hosting countless holidays, celebrations, and special memories

What do you love most about your home?

The spacious layout provided a comfortable and welcoming place to raise our family. The large living room became a favorite gathering space, and having four bedrooms offered both convenience and flexibility throughout the years. We especially loved spending time on the front porch, taking in the beautiful views of the Columbia River and Mt Adams One of our favorite traditions was gathering with family and friends each year to watch the 4th of July fireworks. The home has always felt incredibly solid, secure, and well built, and it has remained consistently dry and comfortable throughout our ownership.

Why did you buy or build your home?

The original 1904 home was purchased by the family and became a longtime gathering place for multiple generations In later years, the ADU was thoughtfully built to provide comfortable living space for the owner and her husband.

What do you love about the Columbia River Gorge?

The Columbia River Gorge offers an incredible lifestyle with endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, community events, and scenic beauty From every season to every landscape, the natural beauty of the Gorge is truly unmatched.

How does your home cater to your lifestyle?

Our priority was raising a large family, and this home provided the perfect space to do that Its generous layout, multiple gathering spaces, and welcoming atmosphere made it ideal for everyday living as well as hosting family and friends

What will you miss about your home?

This home holds a lifetime of memories that we will always carry with us. What we will miss most is the tradition and ease of hosting large family gatherings and celebrations. Its central in-town location has also been a tremendous convenience throughout the years and has always been one of our favorite aspects of living here

What will you remember?

We will remember the joyful sounds of children’s voices filling every room in the house. We will remember Christmas mornings coming down the staircase, Easter egg hunts, pumpkin carving traditions, annual 4th of July fireworks gatherings, Thanksgiving dinners with 30+ people, countless birthday parties, water fights, hide-and-seek games, and music playing from every corner of the home. The house was always full of life, with a constant flow of family and friends creating memories together.

During winter snowstorms, 7th Street also known locally as “Catholic Hill” becomes a favorite neighborhood sledding hill, and at times even a skiing and snowboarding spot, bringing an extra sense of fun and community to the area In later years, we also cherished the opportunity to care for the owner and her husband in the ADU, adding another meaningful chapter to the home’s story.

• What is the most beautiful thing about your home?

The original stained woodwork throughout the home is truly special and adds timeless warmth and character

• What little details or quirks do you treasure?

We treasure the cozy attic spaces, the classic old-home charm of the basement, the dining room built-in buffet and pass-through, and the built-in firewood box in the living room, where we used to store games for family nights

We also love the unique character found throughout the bedrooms and the incredibly spacious feel of the home overall.

“These people were loud but they sure had a lot of fun.”
