BEET HARVESTING EQUIPMENT
> Now available for the US and Canada: 4-, 6-, 7-, 8-, 9-, 12-row harvesters with row widths of 20, 22, 24, 28 and 30 inches. > EasyLift™ automatic depth control for each single row
The 3600 Series Pulvi-Mulcher from Brillion features wider working widths, increased trash clearance and reduced downtime in the field. The series is available in 21’, 25’, 30’ and 36’ working widths. The 30’ model weighs 80% more than the popular WL360 for more clod crushing power. The 36’ unit is the widest PulviMulcher offered by Brillion.
All 3600 Series models feature 8” roller axles with heavy-duty bearings that improve reliability and reduce maintenance interruptions in the field. The design includes three rows of two-piece edge bent s-tines on overall 6” spacing. 25” of under frame clearance improves trash flow through the machine. A leveling harrow in front of the rear roller helps level ridges left by the shanks.
Like you, we never settle. As a result, there’s more sugar — better sugar — in every seed we sell. For more than a century, we’ve put innovation to work in the service of growers who plant Crystal Brand Sugarbeet Seed. With unique hybrids and varieties developed for exactly where you grow, you can be confident your success is always our top priority, this season and for seasons to come.

BY ROB JOHANSSON, DIRECTOR OF ECONOMICS & POLICY ANALYSIS
In August, farm leaders from across the sugar industry gathered with policymakers at the 40th International Sweetener Symposium in Traverse City, Michigan.
It was a milestone event that reflected the camaraderie and collaboration that has defined the U.S. sugar industry for decades.
However, even as we celebrated 40 sweet years, the conversations at the Symposium largely focused on the need to support American farmers and workers as they continue to face the challenges associated with raising
a crop and processing it into sugar.
Presenters shared that farmers’ operating margins are being squeezed by falling revenue and persistently high input costs.
“Farmers around the country have
been dealing with historic inflation,” said economist Dr. John Newton, who serves as the executive head of Terrain.
“Farm production expenses have increased by over $100 billion since 2018. Every single input category is
more expensive today than what it was five or six years ago. The challenge that we have today is that the input costs are not going back down. The input costs remain elevated, they remain steady.”
The Trump administration and the U.S. Congress have repeatedly reaffirmed the importance of maintaining the farm safety net and supporting our farm families. That includes the improved and strengthened sugar provisions recently passed into law as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
That support was reiterated at the Symposium by key leaders, including Stephen Vaden, deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), who received a standing ovation following his remarks.
“I don’t think it’s overstating it in saying that the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will help to ensure that we keep more farmers actually in the field doing what they love best, and that they don’t lose their family farms or be forced out of agriculture altogether, given the current rough patch that [the farm economy is] going through,” Deputy Secretary Vaden said.
Strong federal farm policies are critical to preserving American factory jobs, American family farms, and a strong supply of American-made sugar.
Attendees at the Symposium also heard from Dr. Nancy Beck, principal deputy administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who detailed how she is working
to ensure farmers have the tools they need to continue feeding America. And U.S. sugar policy received bipartisan support from Reps. Jack Bergman (R-MI-01), Brad Finstad (R-MN01), John Moolenaar (R-MI-02), and Haley Stevens (D-MI-11) during their respective remarks in Traverse City.
Every year, the Symposium provides a forum for our industry to explore challenges and opportunities. This year’s programming proved to be especially timely in light of the ongoing threats to the rural economy. Thank you to everyone who attended the 40th Symposium; these conversations and connections inspire our work in DC all year long.
I hope to see you in Vail next year for the 2026 Symposium. n

Nothing compares to candied and caramel apples when it comes to providing a bite of fall childhood nostalgia.
A fresh, tart apple combined with a sweet, crunchy candy or caramel coating evokes Halloween, county fairs, harvest and the taste of fall festivities.
The apple, which originated in the mountains of Central Asia around 6500 BC, is grown in temperate climates around the globe and may be the world’s most familiar fruit. For centuries, people have been coating their harvests of apples and other fruit in syrup and storing it in honey as a means of preservation. The ancient Romans held harvest celebrations dedicated to Pomona, their goddess of agriculture, who was often represented by and associated with apples.
Not only can candied and caramel apples be enjoyed at fairs and fall festivals, but they can be easily made in home kitchens as well.
When the Romans conquered the British Isles in 43 AD, these festivals blended with the similarly timed Samhain, a precursor to Halloween. These historical practices and traditions set the stage for our modern enjoyment of candied and caramel apples, and their associations with Halloween and the fall harvest season.
Although both candied and caramel
apples are served on sticks, their outer glazes are very different. The distinctive, bright red candy apple is coated in a hard candy shell typically made with a sugar-based syrup. This shiny shell is thanks to the science of sugar crystallization because heating a mixture of sugar, water, and sometimes corn syrup, creates a supersaturated solution. As the mixture cools, the sugar recrystallizes, forming a hard, smooth and shiny shell around the apple. The temperature at which the sugar is heated determines the final texture of the candy coating.
Unlike the candied apple, the caramel apple features a soft, sticky outer coating made from melted caramel. The science behind this chewy confection is Maillard reaction, a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars that occur when food is cooked, leading to the formation of new flavor compounds and browning.
The Maillard reaction is influenced by factors such as temperature, pH and the presence of water. It is responsible for the characteristic flavor and color of caramel apples and is crucial for achieving optimal caramelization.
Popular belief holds that Newark, New Jersey, candymaker William W. Kolb invented the red candy apple in 1908. Kolb first combined candy and apples when experimenting with red cinnamon candy he was selling for Christmas. After dipping apples in the red cinnamon mixture, Kolb displayed them in his shop window and sold them for five cents apiece. Soon, candy apples were sold at the Jersey shore and later at circuses and candy shops nationwide.
The first caramel apple is said to have been created in the 1950s by a
Kraft foods employee named Dan Walker. Walker experimented with excess caramel candies from Halloween sales by melting them down and dipping in the apples, and the rest is history. In 1960, shop worker Vito Raimondi invented and patented the first caramel apple machine with the help of his uncle, who owned a confectionery company in Chicago. The Raimondi machine-dipped caramel apple company is still in business today.
Although Walker is credited with inventing the caramel apple as we recognize it today, the origins of the tart treat are a matter of debate. The Waterbury Democrat newspaper in Waterbury, Conn., published a recipe for caramel apples in 1933, and Hunter’s Candy in Moscow, Idaho, is said to have begun selling caramel apples in 1936 and later shipped the treat overseas to soldiers in Korea, Japan and England during WWII. A company called Burke also claimed to have invented the treat in 1950.
The enduring popularity of candy and caramel apples can most likely be attributed to their customizable nature and endless options. Whether you are a fan of the traditional bright red candy or caramel dipped apples, or prefer a chocolate coated nut encrusted version, there is something for everyone.
Not only can candied and caramel apples be enjoyed at fairs and fall festivals, but they can be easily made in home kitchens as well. Maybe you can reignite a fall family tradition or start a new one with this caramel apple recipe!
HOMEMADE CARAMEL APPLES
Original recipe from sallysbakingaddiction.com
• 8-9 apples (cold)
• 1.75 cups heavy whipping cream
• 2 cups light brown sugar
• 1 cup light corn syrup
• One quarter cup unsalted butter
• One half teaspoon salt
• One half teaspoon vanilla extract
• Optional toppings: nuts, chocolate chips, toffee bits, sprinkles, or coconut
Special tools: candy thermometer and caramel apple sticks
1. Prep the apples by rinsing them with water to remove the slippery waxy coating and wipe completely dry. This will help the caramel seal to the apple. Then remove the stem and insert a caramel apple stick in its place, three quarters of the way into the center of the apple.
2. Line a large baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or grease pan with butter. Do not use parchment or wax paper; the hot caramel will stick!
3. To make the caramel, combine the cream, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. It is important to keep the temperature at medium the entire time the caramel cooks. Stir constantly
with a wooden spoon until butter is melted. Once melted, attach the candy thermometer to the side of the pan, ensuring the bulb is not touching the bottom of the pan.
4. Without stirring, let the mixture cook and bubble until it reaches 235-240 degrees F. Reaching this temperature should take about 15-20 minutes, but use the candy thermometer as your guide. Once at 235-240 degrees F, remove caramel from heat and stir in the vanilla. Avoid over-stirring which can create air bubbles in the caramel (and then on the apple). Allow caramel to cool for 10-15 minutes until slightly thickened. If caramel is too thin to coat apples, let it cool and thicken 5-10 minutes longer.
5. To dip the apples, hold the caramel apple stick and dip the apple into the warm caramel, tilting the pot as needed to coat all sides of the apple. Lift the apple up and swirl it around to let excess caramel drip off. Place the coated apple on the prepared pan and repeat with remaining apples. Enjoy
immediately or allow caramel to set, about 45-60 minutes. If you want to wrap the caramel apples in cellophane treat bags for travel/gifting, wait until the caramel has completely set.
6. If adding toppings, do so immediately after coating in caramel and before the caramel sets. Roll the caramel dipped apples in finely chopped nuts, toffee bits, mini chocolate chips, sprinkles or coconut. You can also drizzle with melted chocolate or white chocolate.
• For displaying or serving, place on wax paper or another nonstick surface. Even when the caramel has completely set, caramel apples may slightly stick to a serving dish.
• To eat a caramel apple, you can bite right into it or sit it upright on a cutting board and cut slices around the stick. These are great for sharing!
• Loosely cover and store the leftover dipped apples in the refrigerator for up to one week. n
As we wrap up the marketing year, it’s painfully obvious we have an oversupplied sugar market that directly harms beet growers.
According to August USDA estimates, domestic beet and cane stocks-to-use are extremely high — 19.9 percent — when they should be 13.5 percent. We have about 786,000 tons more sugar in storage than is needed.
Sorting out all the chaos of Washington and its impact on the beet sugar industry will be the focus of our 2026 annual meeting.
In mid-August $2.3 million worth of CCC beet and cane sugar loans were coming due and $221.9 million at the end of September. The loans will either be redeemed or the sugar forfeited to the government for sale into the non-food market. Any forfeited sugar remains in co-op storage until it’s sold for non-food uses by the government. At the same time, we’ve got a big crop to harvest and must have a place to put it. The oversupply problem is not due to American beet and cane production. Too much high-tier sugar, specialty sugar, excessive Mexican access, and foreign cane “molasses” circumvention have combined with a reduction in demand to create the current situation. We anxiously await MAHA recommendations and their impact on the dietary guidelines. Industry leaders are
working to address these challenges. The Trump Administration understands the problems and is acting. Rest assured we are taking every opportunity to address these problems as quickly as we can.
To that end, the Trump Administration has taken serious action towards Brazil, action the beet industry welcomes. As we’ve long shared, Brazil lavishes billions of dollars a year on its sugarcane industry and takes other trade and economic steps that benefit its industry. We’ve long called out these practices to public officials.
The president has leveled 50 percent tariffs on incoming Brazilian goods, and initiated a formal investigation process (Sec. 301) towards unfair trade practices in specific sectors. We are actively contributing to these efforts, highlighting to the administration how Brazilian farmers benefit and American farmers suffer due to Brazilian government involvement. Additionally, ASGA President Neil Rockstad offered testimony in early September before a multi-agency commission driving home the negative impact on American farmers like himself.
At the end of August, the U.S. International Trade Commission concluded that termination of the antidumping and countervailing duty suspension agreements on sugar from Mexico would likely lead to continuation of material injury to the domestic sugar industry. As a result, the suspension agreements will remain in effect for another five years. The new five-year period will begin in early September. This is great news.
On the legislative front there is plenty of unfinished business. Congress must find a way to fund the government by the end of September. No easy task. Republicans are seeking significant funding reductions. It remains to be seen if such goals are accomplished, but
we know the nation can’t keep spending like it is. Despite all this, appropriations priorities such as sugarbeet research has, to date, not seen any cuts from previous years. This is particularly important given the wide array of agronomic challenges you face in the fields.
The entirety of the Farm Bill was not included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act despite important safety net improvements. Many programs important to sugar, like the Feedstock Flexibility program, Beet Revenue insurance, and others need to be acted on before the end of the year. More broadly, conservation, credit, rural development and whole swaths of the farm framework also need to be acted on. Both parties continue to look for consensus on a path forward with initial work underway. While activity in this space is a positive development, we are a long way from meaningful progress.
