X GAMES ASPEN 2026
SNOWMOBILES MAKE EPIC RETURN For the first time in five years, snowmobiles were back where many riders and fans believe they belong—under the lights at the Winter X Games Aspen 2026. Held at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, the 2026 X Games marked a long-awaited return of sled athletes to one of action sports’ biggest stages. The program brought back two disciplines that helped define snowmobile freestyle progression for more than a decade: Snowmobile Freestyle and Snowmobile Speed & Style. Their absence had left a noticeable hole in the event lineup since the early 2020s, but the sound of snowmobile engines and the sight of riders throwing big tricks over massive ramps made it clear the sport hadn’t lost its edge—or its audience. 10 SNOWEST MARCH 2026
Top riders including Brett Turcotte, Brandon Cormier, and Willie Elam returned to Aspen ready to remind the actionsports world what modern sled freestyle looks like. Bigger ramps, deeper trick lists, and a new generation of riders added fresh energy to the competition while longtime veterans proved they’re still pushing the progression. For the sled community, the return meant more than medals and podiums. It was validation. After years off the X Games schedule, snowmobiling once again had a global stage—and judging by the atmosphere in Aspen, the sport didn’t miss a beat. The crowd reaction, rider energy, and sheer spectacle made one thing clear: snowmobiles still belong at X Games. d

GLUETREAD SNOWMOBILE PADDLE REPAIR KIT When a snowmobile track starts shedding paddles, it usually signals the beginning of an expensive problem. Torn lugs rarely stop at just one, and once the damage starts spreading, riders are often left staring down the cost of a full track replacement. GlueTread’s snowmobile track repair kits offer a practical way to slow that process down and keep a sled on the snow longer. GlueTread built its reputation in the off-road world with durable rubber patch systems designed to repair tires and sidewalls. That same technology has been adapted for snowmobile tracks, giving riders a way to reinforce torn or partially damaged paddles before they completely rip away. The repair works by bonding a flexible rubber patch to the damaged lug using a specialized adhesive formulated to hold up under cold temperatures and the constant flex of a spinning track. The idea isn’t to make a worn-out track new again—it’s to stop small damage from becoming a bigger problem. Catch a
THE WAY OUT
The Way Out by Devon O’Neil is a nonfiction account of a tragic backcountry skiing incident in Colorado and subsequent rescue that involved Chris Burandt and Chase Bunting, and the powerful ripple effects it had on a mountain community. The book centers on a winter hut trip in the Colorado Rockies involving three fathers and four teenage boys from the town of Salida. During the trip, a US Forest Service ranger, Brett Beasley, and a 15-year-old skier, Cole Walters‑Schaler, leave their hut for what is expected to be a short ski outing.
12 SNOWEST MARCH 2026
torn paddle early and a GlueTread patch can help stabilize the lug and prevent the tear from spreading across the track. Each kit includes rubber repair patches, adhesive, applicator tips and surface prep materials designed to help create a strong bond with the track rubber. The process involves cleaning and scuffing the damaged area before applying the adhesive and patch to reinforce the paddle. For mountain riders, boondockers and anyone logging serious miles, a repair kit like this can be a useful tool in the shop— or even in the trailer during a riding trip. Tracks aren’t cheap, and losing multiple paddles over the course of a season can quickly add up. GlueTread’s repair kits won’t replace a fully worn or heavily damaged track, but they can buy riders valuable time. And sometimes that’s all you need to finish out the season without dropping serious money on a replacement. Find more information at www.gluetread.com.
When a fierce winter storm rolls in, the pair become disoriented and trapped in steep, remote terrain. What should have been a quick run turns into a desperate overnight fight for survival in extreme cold and deep snow. As their absence grows alarming, a massive search effort unfolds. Friends, family members, search-and-rescue volunteers, and local backcountry riders mobilize to try to reach the missing pair in brutal conditions. Among those who help respond are experienced snowmobilers, including professional mountain riders Chris Burandt and Chase Bunting, who join others on snowmobiles to access the rugged terrain and assist with the rescue effort. Their involvement highlights how, in remote mountain environments, snowmobilers often play a critical role in search-and-rescue operations because they can reach areas that are otherwise difficult to access quickly. Beyond recounting the dramatic search and survival ordeal, O’Neil explores the emotional aftermath of the tragedy. Through extensive interviews, he examines how the event affected the families involved, the rescuers who responded, and the tight-knit mountain community that had to process the loss. The book ultimately becomes not just a survival story, but a deeper reflection on risk in the backcountry, decision-making in extreme environments, and how people find a path forward after profound tragedy. protect your winter adventures
WITH SNOWMOBILE INSURANCE As winter sports enthusiasts, we eagerly await the snowy season for the adrenaline rush of snowmobiling. The feeling of the cold air rushing past, the sight of the unspoiled white landscapes—it’s a winter wonderland waiting to be discovered. Amidst the excitement and adventure, it’s essential to ensure that you’re properly protected with snowmobile insurance. Here are a few reasons why snowmobile insurance is a wise decision. Peace of mind The most significant benefit of snowmobile insurance is the peace of mind it brings. Knowing that you’re covered in case of unexpected events allows you to fully immerse yourself in the winter experience. Focus on the breathtaking landscapes and the adrenaline rush of riding, without the nagging worry of potential financial setbacks.
Family and friends Policies can provide off-premises and permissive use, allowing you to confidently have friends and family drive your snowmobile occasionally. You also have the option to add minor operators as drivers, so you can rest easy knowing that you have the right protection if something goes wrong.
Protect your snowmobile Your snowmobile is a valuable investment that deserves protection. With comprehensive and collision coverage, you can rest easy knowing that repair or replacement costs will be covered in the event of certain damage, theft, or accidents. Keep your ride in top condition without breaking the bank.
Personalized protection Since no two snowmobilers are alike, snowmobile insurance lets you choose your own coverage options. You can customize your policy to include things like accessory and custom parts/equipment coverage to provide protection if you’ve made enhancements or upgrades to your snowmobile. This way, you can be sure that your insurance plan matches your specific needs.
Be prepared for the unexpected Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced riders. Snowmobile insurance offers liability coverage, protecting you from the financial implications of thirdparty injuries or property damage, up to specified limits. You can relax and have fun in your winter activities, whether riding on trails or exploring the backcountry, when you have the right protection. Homeowners insurance Homeowners insurance may provide some coverage for your snowmobile, but it often has limitations and can have a more costly deductible. A dedicated snowmobile insurance policy ensures that you’re adequately covered specific to your needs.
Confidence for financing Obtaining insurance coverage for your snowmobile is often a requirement from lenders if you have financed its purchase. Not only does snowmobile insurance fulfill this obligation, but it also provides peace of mind by safeguarding your financial interests. Have fun in the winter with confidence, knowing that you have the proper coverage for your situation. Invest in snowmobile insurance and ensure that your thrilling escapades remain just that—thrilling, safe, and unforgettable. Let the snow-covered landscapes be your playground, and let insurance be your safety net.

2027 Ski-Doo Freeride 147 Turbo R
S
ki-Doo has made some significant changes for its 2027 model year snowmobile lineup. From an all-new 600RR 2-stroke engine loaded with technology (like Smart Eco Mode and Silent Stop), to the expansion of coil-over rear suspensions in all Spring-Order Summits and Freerides, to the radical new Freeride 147 3-inch 850 E-TEC Turbo R. We’ve logged a lot of seat time on the 2027 Summit Expert and 2027 Freeride Turbo R 147 and have the sleds in our fleet right now. We’ve been able to ride in hard crusty snow, old packed conditions, deep fresh bottomless powder, settled powder and a variety in between.
14 SNOWEST MARCH 2026
The Freeride is living up to its name. Dubbed the mullet sled due to its high-capacity front suspension and 3-inch 147 short track, the sled is an absolute party. As riding styles evolve and riders look less to conquer peaks and drainages and look more to mind-blowing stunts and maneuvers, the Freeride will rise to the top of the pack for fun backcountry sleds. The fact that Ski-Doo paired a 147 3-inch track to its proven Rotax 850 E-TEC Turbo R shows its dedication to giving riders what they are asking for. There are a lot of new features to cover and talk about on the 2027 Freeride.
We’ll dive in here but if you want to get some behind the scenes coverage, check out our podcast episode of The SnoWest Show powered by Trails West RPM, available on YouTube and popular podcast platforms. The 2027 Summit Expert underwent a slight name change (from Summit X with Expert Package to just Summit Expert) and lost a few more pounds. It gets a new coil-over rear shock in the lightweight tMotion L/O rear suspension for ‘27. And it gets some lightweight upgrades on the front end. All 2027 Ski-Doo deep snow models have coilover
rear suspensions now, replacing torsion springs. Ski-Doos in-season models offer complete packages with Summit Adrenaline and Edge offerings. And, you can get a Turbo R engine in an in-season Edge, which is great. Ski-Doo released a new 600RR E-TEC engine that gets a bump in horsepower and is more efficient than its predecessor. Along with that comes a new oil that reduces oil consumption in the 600RR. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2027 Ski-Doo sleds. SNOWEST MARCH 2026 15

The Freeride is available in both 850 E-TEC and 850 E-TEC Turbo R engine packages. You can still get it in a 146x2.5, 154 2.5 and 154 3.0 track configurations along with the new 147x3.0 track option. The 147 track is 8 pounds lighter than the 146x2.5 track. The 165 track length is no longer offered in the Freeride.
The Rotax E-TEC 600RR replaces all 600R engines for 2027. This new 600RR engine gets pumped up to 130-horsepower and 20 percent quicker throttle response thanks to these features: Revised cylinder porting and higher peak RPM (150rpm higher than 600R). Booster injectors from the 850 E-TEC and 600RS E-TEC enable faster RPM and power gains. New thin shaft with embedded bolts on the throttle bodies to increase intake air flow. New signature sound from a new intake tract and revised muffler and tuned pipe. 20 percent reduction in oil consumption (with new XPS E-TEC MAX oil). New Smart ECO mode for 5 percent better fuel economy and 5 percent reduction in emissions. New Silent Stop feature that shuts off engine but leaves gauges and lights on while rider lightly holds brake at stops. Allows for easier communication with other riders without having to kill and restart engine manually. Silent Stop is activated with the bake lever (brake light switch sensor) and the electric starter restarts the engine when brake is released. Silent Stop is automatically active in Smart ECO mode and can be activated in Sport mode via the gauge menu.
The Summit Expert is the narrowest mountain sled in the industry with a 32-inch stance. It has a riding style all of its own.
The 2027 Freeride also gets the 6061-T6 forged aluminum upper A-arm for weight reduction. SNOWEST MARCH 2026 17
The 2027 Ski-Doo Summit Expert lost 4 pounds since MY26, thanks to a new coilover rear suspension, forged aluminum upper A arms and new S-module on the chassis.
The new 600RR engine is offered in the 2027 Summit Adrenaline. This sled is absolutely perfect for someone new to the sport or looking for an economical entry point
MY27 updates to the 10.25inch display include: Now displays number of riders in group; displays position of group members on map edges; better distinction between group members and non-group members; ability to hide non-group members on map; easier to stop sharing location. The new software is available for all 2023-2026 models via over-the-air software update.
The 2027 Freeride features a standard limiter strap adjuster. This is similar to the adjuster on the Summit Expert, but the limiter strap is on position longer on the Freeride.
The 2027 Summit Expert (and Summit X) is available in this new Orange Crush colorway.
The Summit Neo Plus is back for 2027. This sled is packed with features and performance at an entry-level ride and price tag. The Summit Neo Plus is very popular out West from what we’ve seen.
The Summit HCE (Hill Climb Edition) is back and features KYB PRO 40 shocks with lightweight springs, the Super Short tunnel design and tMotion L/O coilover rear suspension.
The 2027 Ski-Doo Summit X returns unchanged from MY26 aside from new colors: Airy Blue (shown), Orange Crush and Timeless Black.
18 SNOWEST MARCH 2026
The 2027 Skandic moves to the REV Gen5 platform and gets a new uMotion rear suspension. It’s also available with the new 600RR engine package and offered in SE (20-inch) and LE (24-inch) track options.
The Freeride has a new 34-inch stance that is two inches narrower than the 2026 Freeride. The new Twin Link steering system replaces rack steering and a beefier sway bar maintains the front end feel the Freeride is known for.
2027 marks the 20th anniversary of the MXZ X-RS and SkiDoo is celebrating with a special anniversary edition. You can get this sled with the new 600RR or the 850 E-TEC Turbo R. The model includes the cool KYB shocks with integral base valve adjuster.
The tMotion L/O rear suspension on the 2027 Freeride 147 features a coilover rear KYB Pro shock and larger 210mm rear wheels.
We love the new tMotion L/O coilover rear suspension found on the 2027 Summit Expert. This is a rigid skid— meaning the rear scissor arm does not flex side to side like the Summit X.
The 2027 Summit Expert gets new 6061-T6 forged aluminum upper A-arms with its S32 front end. The arms shave half a pound compared to MY26, while the new S-module shaves another 2 pounds.
The 2027 Summit Expert’s rear suspension is 1.5 pounds lighter than the MY26 Expert rear suspension. That weight comes from the new coilover rear track shock. MY26 had torsion springs rather than the coilover spring. d SNOWEST MARCH 2026 19

KYLE PULSIFER
2027 Polaris RMK Factory Edition
20 SNOWEST MARCH 2026
T
he 2027 Polaris RMKs just dropped, and we were the first to spin the tracks on the new models. When Polaris released its Caleb Kesterke factory backcountry at Hay Days last fall, the immediate reaction was, “when we do we get to buy one of those?” While nobody realistically expected a 240-hp 9R Boost (although we all wanted one!), we knew that this was going to turn into something new and unique for the 2027 lineup. With that, Polaris has added a couple new segments to the RMK lineup—among those being the 2027 RMK Factory Edition and RMK SPS. Neither a Pro RMK or an RMK Khaos, the Factory Edition RMK takes a seat at the top of the pyramid with a suspension package that is remarkable. The RMK Factory Edition (FE) models are all about taking that race-winning RMSHA hillclimb heritage and improving the consumer sled. The RMK FE focuses on suspension and handling, with extreme big-hit capabilities and a more controlled ride over moguls. The Factory Edition handles
markedly differently than the existing Pro and Khaos RMKs. What’s interesting about the 2027 RMK Factory Edition release is that Polaris doesn’t expect this to be the top seller in the RMK lineup. Exclusive to SnowCheck, the RMK Factory Edition is a purpose-built, big-hit capability backcountry sled that is intended for top-tier riders. Will a lot of RMK riders want the RMK Factory Edition? Yes. Will a lot of those riders benefit from the RMK Factory Edition? Not necessarily. The Factory Edition will weigh more than an RMK Khaos and even more than a Pro RMK. If you want the lightest mountain sled available, the Pro RMK 9R is still your card to punch. The RMK Factory Edition’s rails, shocks, shock springs and rear bumper all add weight to the sled. But they also add big capacity and increased durability to riders who hit obstacles with the aggressiveness of a pro supercross champion. Think Caleb Kesterke, Keith Curtis, Andy Thomas, Brett Turcotte... Here’s everything you need to know about the 2027 Polaris RMK Factory Edition and other 2027 Polaris sleds. SNOWEST MARCH 2026 21

THE 2027s
The 2027 RMK SPS is something we’ve been pushing for. This sled is an in-season model and is offered with either the 850 or 9R engine package. You can get it in a 146x2.6, 155 2.75 or 165 2.75 track option. Other features include the Matryx Slash short tunnel and lightweight cooler and forged front IFS suspension. This sled has everything you need and comes in at a lighter price tag compared to a SnowCheck Pro or Khaos.
Utility sleds are getting very popular. Polaris has added the Titan Nordic Pro to its lineup, featuring FOX QS3 shocks, Prostar S4 and Patriot 850 engine options, a 1.8-inch track and 7S display.
The Factory Edition Walker Velocity shocks have new bodies with swept-back and smaller reservoirs to protect them from contacting trees. The shocks feature 1.75-inch pistons and run 100-lb shock springs and black anodized bodies. 24 SNOWEST MARCH 2026
We love the ride and handling on the 2027 RMK Factory Editions. We first rode the 9R FE and Patriot Boost FE in early January in deep powder. The trails going in were brutal and the FE showed off its new shocks by obliterating the moguls.
The 2027 Polaris RMK SPS is offered in two colorways: Black or Red. And two engine options: 850 or 9R. It comes with the standard message center display and IFP shocks.
No major changes to the RMK Khaos lineup aside from new color options. There is no Limited Edition RMK for 2027.
Polaris finally adds a 200cc youth sled to its lineup. This is the same co-branded 200 model built by Arctic Cat that Cat, Ski-Doo and now Polaris share.
While Pro and Khaos RMKs have a history of getting up on top of the snow extremely well, we’ve always thought the rear end kicked a little on bumpy singletrack. The 2027 RMK Factory Edition has completely new shock valving and heavier springs. Not only does it eliminate the kick, it blitzes moguls like a supercross bike.
One big aspect of the 2027 RMK FE are the heavy duty rails on the rear suspension. The rails are 40 percent stronger than the Pro / Khaos rail. The bottom profile is just like the Pro / Khaos rail but the top profile is the RMSHA factory race sled profile. Combined with the shocks and bumpers, the 2027 RMK FEs are 10 lbs heavier than a Khaos RMK.
The 2027 RMK Factory Edition runs the same IFS front end as Pro and Khaos with the exception of the shocks. The ski stance is the same across all RMK models.
The 2027 Indy VR1 with Dynamix. Dynamix is a FOX system that reads pitch, roll and vehicle movement data through the IMU and constantly controls shock position and compression to deliver the best possible handling and ride scenario. It’s pretty incredible technology. d SNOWEST MARCH 2026 25

O
ne year ago, Arctic Cat was officially shut down. Today, the iconic brand is coming off a great 2026 lineup and headed full-steam into 2027. In those 12 months, ownership of Arctic Cat changed hands from Textron to a private investor group. Brad Darling, a former Arctic Cat CEO prior to Textron’s acquisition, now leads Arctic Cat once again. Looking back now, Cat barely skipped a beat it seems. We’re just glad the industry has four manufacturers. For 2027, Arctic Cat focuses on filling voids in the lineup with new models (El Tigre, Jag), new segments (Widescape WS 250), and expanding options in the mountains (M Sno Pro).

The sled many riders have been asking for—a twin rail rear suspension version of the M 858 Sno Pro. Offered as a 2027 model with a full-length heat exchanger, the twin-rail Sno Pro features the proven AWS 36 front end and AC5S shock package. It’s available in 146 and 154 track configurations.
New for 2027—Arctic Cat announced late 2026 that it had acquired the Widescape brand and with it the Widescape WS 250 machine. This scooter features a 242cc single EFI 4-stroke engine, a 12x105x1.5 track, CVT, electric start and a 200-lb dry weight. 30 SNOWEST MARCH 2026
The new 2027 Arctic Cat Bearcat 858 blends muscle with allaround utility. The 858 C-TEC2 twin ups the sled’s capability. The sled gets AWS 39 with electronic power steering (EPS) and a 15x154x1.6 Cobra track. Other features include Arctic Cat G8 display, G2 Pro Climb 7 skis, XTRA Action rear suspension and a rear rack with ATACH mounting system.
Arctic Cat is offering the 2027 858 HCX in three colorways: black, white and Team Arctic Green. The HCX features a 146x2.6 track with a laydown steering system that gives it more of a snocross sled feel. The HCX gets a QS3/QS3R shock package for MY27.
SNOWEST MARCH 2026 31
While there aren’t many big updates or changes to the 2027 M 858 Sno Pro Alpha, there are a few updates to the 858 CTEC2 powerplant across the lineup. That includes a lighter primary clutch ring gear (same as what’s on the 600) which is 1.5 lbs lighter. Also, there’s a new oil reservoir that is made of a stronger material for both 858 and 600 models. There’s also an exhaust valve change for improved valve and arm durability and updated engine calibration for MY27.
Arctic Cat now offers a twin rail mountain rear suspension on its 2027 M Sno Pro models. For 2026, only the HCR 858 had a twin rail rear suspension. This skid found on the 2027 M 850 Sno Pro and M 600 Sno Pro is lighter than the HCR’s skid because it doesn’t have rail reinforcements. The twin rail Float Action rear suspension features AC5S shocks.
For 2027, all 858 and 600 C-TEC2 models get a new airbox for improved serviceability and reduced chance of water ingestion
We are big fans of the Arctic Cat G8 display. It’s a highresolution, glove-friendly digital touchscreen with customizable ride data, GPS mapping, group tracking and smartphone connectivity.
The Alpha One mono rail rear suspension is offered on 2027 M Sno Pro Alpha. It’s tough to beat on deep, bottomless pow days and contributes to the sled’s overall lightweight feel. And it doesn’t carry snow buildup like most twin trail skids tend to do, so you stay lighter as the day goes on. d

THE 2027s
LYNX
T
he 2027 Lynx Shredders have dropped. Lynx has been on the gas lately with major strides in making its two Shredders lighter, narrower and more capable in the mountains. Lynx snowmobiles are designed and manufactured in Rovaniemi, Finland. Lynx is owned by BRP and shares core product with Ski-Doo (such as Rotax engines and E-modules) but Lynx has its own team of engineers and designers. Its main focus is to cultivate snowmobiles that work best in conditions at home in Finland and Scandinavia.

That means sleds are ready for absolutely brutal terrain. In fact, one of Lynx’s flagship models is named the Brutal. Trails are rougher, the snow is harder, and the riders... go bigger. Google Andreas Bergmark. However, since bringing the Lynx brand to North American dealerships in 2022, Lynx has been making changes to the Shredder DS and RE to improve how the sleds work in more mountain-ish terrain and deeper snow—without compromising suspension capacity and what the Shredders are known for.

EVERYDAY COMFORT SLIP ON A PAIR OF XTRATUF BOOTS
BY BRADY L. KAY
I discovered the XTRATUF line of boots a while back and have since expanded my lineup. The ADB Sport Tailgate Collection could be my new favorite because the boots offer both comfort and waterproof protection, making them practical for a range of outdoor activities. Alongside these benefits, the collection features iconic designs and new colors to represent your favorite NFL teams. There’s a dark green version called “Built For The Birds,” a black-and-gold pair named “Built For The Steel City,” and the red-and-gold “Built For The Bay” 40 SNOWEST MARCH 2026
boots. The inspiration for the names is obvious. I chose the “Built For The Windy City” Tailgate 6-inch ankle deck boots, which are navy blue and orange. They slip on as easily as slippers. You can wear them even on days you’re not riding. They have an Ecofriendly BioLite outsole and a special printed insole for all-day comfort. Priced at $140, the Windy City boots give me great-looking footwear for snow days. Another faux pas is ordering a stylish boot for yourself and forgetting
your significant other. XTRATFUF makes boots for both men and women, with an equally impressive women’s collection featuring lightweight, comfortable, waterproof boots. I ordered the Women’s Ankle Deck Boot OOTO (Fig/Lilac). OOTO stands for Out Of The Ordinary, which captures the collection. Depending on the ride, the woman in your life might opt for these over heavy boots due to their slip-resistant soles and easyon design. My wife often wears hers on snowy days, even just for errands. ENJOY THE STRETCH VERTICAL MTX LITE MONOSUIT FROM FXR BY BRADY L. KAY
Not all monosuits are created equally; choose carefully when making your next purchase. Crafted for demanding conditions, I went with the Black/Asphalt/Kash version of the Vertical MTX Lite 26 Monosuit this season. Once I slipped it on, I instantly appreciated the increased range of motion. I was originally drawn to the all-new monosuit because it claimed to be the “lightest with the most stretch in the industry.” That’s a bold statement to live up to, but it only took one ride to confirm, as it did not disappoint. Like similar FXR products, it combines advanced waterproofing, breathability, and climate control. However, its lightweight, uninsulated design ensures freedom of movement without compromising protection. Thoughtful features, such as adjustable vents and reinforced high-wear areas, make it ideal for active use in variable weather. For top-of-the-line performance 42 SNOWEST MARCH 2026
and all-weather protection, the Vertical MTX Lite Monosuit uses HydrX 35K, a high-performance waterproof and breathable laminate. This suit offers A.C.M.T. Dual layer, climate control, and an anticondensation system. The outer shell is a nylon/spandex Omni-Lite hybrid stretch with 500D Oxford nylon at high-wear areas. PFAS-free and finished with DWR, moisture simply bounces off the suit. You’ll not only stay warm but also dry with the seam-sealed A.C.M.T. (Advanced Climate Management Technology) lining system, which includes integrated venting for breathability, and the Dry Vent system, designed to block moisture. The chest pocket is both snowproof and moisture-resistant. There are vent systems at the bicep, back, and side of the body, allowing heat to escape. Zip out the cold with the YKK Vislon heavy-duty Aquaguard two-way front zipper, featuring a full inner placket
for extra protection. Heavy-duty waterproof zippers are used at the chest pocket, hand pockets, and the sleeve key pocket. The jacket includes hidden features: an inner beacon pocket with tether cord and key clip in the lower right pocket, plus a handy goggle wipe chamois. Stay warm with the shockcord adjustable collar, removable/ adjustable hood, and hook-and-loop cuffs with Lycra inner cuff extensions. Comfort is a top priority, with padded knees with removable knee pads, a thermal seat, dry seat, dry knee inserts, and an adjustable comfortmapped suspender system. Made for lasting durability, the monosuit features a reinforced instep and hem, storm cuffs with hook-and-loop/snap closure, front/rear boot-lace retention system, back leg-length adjusters, and reflective inserts. Starting at $814.99, don’t fall for more restrictive monosuits, go Vertical and you won’t regret it. (fxrracing.com). d

REAL-WORLD WEIGHTS OF THE
2026 MOUNTAIN SLEDS RIDE WEIGHTS OF OUR TEST FLEET BY RYAN HARRIS
Way back before there was a deep snow segment of snowmobiles, weight was a hot topic. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, riders were taking heavy, ill-equipped trail sleds with long track kits off trail and deep into the backcountry. Power-to-weight ratio was a big factor, and riders who found ways to get rid of weight owned the bigger terrain and deeper snow. While factory turbos, deeper-lug tracks and better sleds have improved both the power-to-weight ratio and the deep snow performance of a modern stock mountain sled, one thing remains true––lighter sleds handle better, ride better and float better. SnoWest has led the charge for lighter, better and more powerful sleds since the ‘70s. And we still do today. To track progress and tell the story, we weigh our test fleet of moun-
44 SNOWEST MARCH 2026
tain sleds every year. However, we consistently weigh sleds at a ride weight. What is ride weight? That’s a sled full of gas, full of oil and carrying a spare belt. Which is just how most riders leave the parking lot for a ride into the backcountry. Ride weight represents real-world handling and feel. Dry weight is interesting but it doesn’t tell the whole story, as it’s often just an element of freight weight. Wet weight--often listed by manufactureres--is subjective and only includes a scarce amount of the fluids a snowmobile must carry to operate, such as coolant, grease, oil and gas. Here are the official SnoWest Ride Weights of our 2026 test fleet of mountain sleds. Each sled was weighed with a full tank of gas, a full tank of oil and with a spare belt. Check out the SnoWest Magazine YouTube channel for videos of the weighing process. d
