Perhaps the most difficult decision when choosing a crossover snowmobile is whether you need something for deeper snow or for harder hits. And when it comes to choosing between the 2026 Ski-Doo Freeride and the Backcountry X-RS there’s a lot to consider. Putting things into perspective, the Freeride is built to tackle deep snow in extreme terrain. It’s made for the big drops and long jumps while still capable of holding a sidehill and twisting through trees. With a shortened tunnel and rigid rear suspension, the Freeride is capable of hanging with any mountain sled on the snow. The Backcountry X-RS has trail DNA but a long, aggressive track that will allow it to wander off the hardpack and into the fluff. But its primary purpose is off-trail aggressiveness with a snocross attitude. 12 SNOWEST DECEMBER 2025
Both models are available with either the 850 E-TEC aspirated engine or the Turbo R. However, the X-RS features the Turbo R with water injection which maintains a more consistent power even if you are running hard on ice or hardpack conditions. Both also come with SHOT starter. Both are built upon the Rev Gen5 platform. The Freeride has the RAS 3 front suspension with KYB Pro 40 EA-3 shocks. The X-RS has the RAS X suspension on its 39-inch front end and RAS RX on its 43-inch front end. Both feature KYB Pro 36 EA-3 shocks. The Freeride has the tMotion XT rear suspension with rigid rear arm and KYB Pro 40 EA-3 shocks. The X-RS has the cMotion X rear with KYB Pro 40 EA-3 shock package. The bridge between these two models can either be shortened or lengthened, depending on the track option you go with.
The Freeride has four track options. The 146 x 15 x 2.5 and 154 x 15 x 2.5 PowderMax tracks will make it more agile and playful for tight maneuvering while the 154 x 15 x 3 and 165 x 15 x 3 PowderMax X-Light tracks will improve its performance in the steep and deep. The X-RS offers five track options. With the 39-inch front you can choose from the PowderMax 146 x 16 x 2, 154 x 16 x 2 or the 154 x 16 x 2.5. The wider tracks improve its flotation to make up for the slightly shorter lugs. With the 43-inch front end you can get either the Storm 150 track which is 146 x 15 x 1.5 or the Ice Storm 150 track which is 146 x 15 x 1.5. These tracks are better suited for hardpack snow conditions. The 146s and 154s are going to perform very similarly in off-trail performance while the gap between the 3-inch lugs
and the 1.5-inch lugs will separate these two sleds from the deep snow and the trail. When it comes to the weight difference, the Freeride 154 is 40 pounds lighter than the X-RS 154 which does carry a significant impact as the snow gets deeper. Both models are also available with Ski-Doo’s state-ofthe-art technology—the 10.25 BRP Connect touchscreen. The X-RS has a base price around $17,200 while the Freeride’s base price is $17,550. So, if you’re leaning toward a crossover sled that excels in the deep snow and mountains, the Freeride is the most logical choice. But if you want something that can rock & roll down the trail and still get off the beaten path for some cross-country frolicking, the Backcountry X-RS may be the perfect option. d SNOWEST DECEMBER 2025 13

Whether you ride in the mountains but want a snowmobile that can tame the toughest trails, or you ride in the lower elevations but want a snowmobile that’s capable of wandering off-trail and into steeper terrain and deeper snow, Polaris offers two excellent choices for what you may be looking for—the RMK Khaos or Switchback Assault. The Khaos is built for the aggressive backcountry rider, whether in steep mountain terrain or in trees and technical terrain. The Assault is built for the aggressive trail rider who doesn’t necessarily conform to staying on the trail. Both offer options that will either stretch their limitations from mountains to trails or from trails to mountains. It’s up to you to choose which one actually fits your riding 18 SNOWEST DECEMBER 2025
style the best. Are you looking for something that allows you to aggressively ride mountain trails or something that offers a decent trail experience as you work your way back into steeper and deeper riding areas? The Khaos is based on the Pro RMK Matryx chassis with the RMK React front end and the RMK Khaos rear suspension. It offers six track options—15 x 146 x 2 Crossover, 15 x 146 x 2.6 Series 6, 15 x 155 x 2.75 Series 8, 15 x 155 x 3.25 Series 9, 15 x 165 x 2.75 Series 8 and 15 x 165 x 3.25 Series 9. It’s also available with the Patriot 850, 9R and Boost engine packages. The Assault is based on the Crossover Matryx chassis with a choice of either the Race IFS 42.5-inch front end or the Escape IFS 39-41-inch adjustable front end. It has the IGX rear skid. The Escape IFS version offers two
track options—the 15 x 146 x 1.6 Cobra and the 15 x 146 x 2 Crossover. The Race IFS version offers four track options— the 15 x 146 x 1.6 Cobra, 15 x 146 x 2 Crossover, 15 x 146 x 1.5 Ice Storm and 15 x 146 x 1.35 Cobra. The Assault also offers the same three engine packages. You should note, however, that some tracks or engine packages are only available during spring SnowCheck. Since the track and engine options can take these two models to both ends of the crossover spectrum, we tried to focus on the 146 x 2 models and how they performed in similar snow conditions. The first thing we noticed is the weight. On the trail the Assault was much more stable. But off the trail it was also much heavier. The Khaos has an estimated dry weight at 426
pounds which makes it lighter and nimbler in terrain. The Assault weighs in at 494 pounds which makes it more durable when pounding the bumps. With the narrower ski stance, the Khaos carves through deep snow and weaves through trees. Again, the Assault isn’t built to excel in deep snow, but rather for optimum stability on rough and twisty trails. If you want something to ride in steep terrain with deep snow and you want maximum agility, minimum weight and plenty of power, the Khaos is your pick. If you want performance trail riding with the versatility to wander off into the terrain where there are more jumps and bigger drops, the Assault will open new doors for off-trail adventures. A LOOK AT WHAT THE SNOWEST TEST CREW HAD TO SAY ABOUT POLARIS Bruce Kerbs—The one thing that stands out to me on the Khaos 9R is the engine. The 9R is a great running sled. The power is consistent from idle clear to the top end. It’s a consistent power. It pulls hard out of the gate and just keeps pulling. The backshift on it is great. In the trees, when you need to let off and then get back on it the power

is there. Polaris has done really well with the engine. Also, I’ve always liked the Polaris skis. The skis on the 9R are great for a lot of different snow conditions. We were in some heavier powder conditions but the skis stayed on top and didn’t dig in deep. The 9R handles well through the powder and through the trees. d
JUST FOR
STARTERS PERFECT INTRODUCTION TO SNOWMOBILING BY STEVE JANES
If you’re just getting started into snowmobiling, or if you have a younger member of the family who is about ready to graduate from the 120cc class but you’re a little reluctant to put him/her on dad’s old 800, perhaps you should take a close look at the entry class of snowmobiles offered. Arctic Cat, Polaris and Ski-Doo all offer a great model for that person who isn’t quite ready or needing the horsepower to blast down the trail, but rather would be much less intimidated and much more confident on a snowmobile that is slightly smaller yet features all the amenities you want and is still capable of wandering off the trail. Cat offers the M 400, which is a 397cc two stroke EFI that delivers about 65 horsepower in a smooth distribution 24 SNOWEST DECEMBER 2025
of performance. Polaris offers the RMK Evo 550 which is a two-stroke twin that delivers about 85 horsepower. SkiDoo offers the Summit Neo and the Neo+ which feature a 600 EFI engine that is tuned differently to either deliver 55 or 85 horsepower. When you start comparing the three brands, both the M 400 and the Neo offer a package for the rider who still needs a little restriction of speed while the Evo and the Neo+ are for the rider who wants to be able to keep pace on the trail. Cat offers a 36-inch ski stance on the Arctic Mountain suspension with a 146 x 2-inch Challenger track on the Alpha single rail rear suspension. It has the same feel as
Cat’s powerful mountain lineup, and offers enough flotation to get you through fresh snow. Polaris has put the RMK Evo in the ProRide lowered platform to deliver a lighter feel and lower center of gravity for better stability. It has the Pro-Ride adjustable IFS front end and Evo 144 skid with a 144 x 1.75-inch Backcountry track. It has the power to go through deeper snow, but it still is designed for more subdued riding that allows new or younger riders to develop confidence before jumping onto a full-size sled. Ski-Doo has two Summit Neo models so it can either accommodate the younger rider or offer a little more performance for the rider just getting ready to transition to a fullsize model. Both versions of the Neo feature the RAS front
suspension and Neo rear suspension on the REVGen5 chassis. The price for these three sleds, all of which come with electric start, is around $10,000, so they make for an affordable way to get started into snowmobiling. The M 400 with its lightweight feel and Alpha rear skid is the perfect snowmobile to negotiate tight locations and uneven terrain. The Evo 550 offers more of a full-size feel while still without an intimidating ride. The Neo offers the option in engine performance that allows you to get the exact power you are looking for. All three models will give a new or younger rider a positive snowmobiling experience which will start them on their way to may more years of building wonderful memories on the snow. d SNOWEST DECEMBER 2025 25

THE 6s SURPRISING POWER AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE BY STEVE JANES
The best kept secret in the snowmobile mountain segment is the 600/650 class of sleds. Regardless of age, gender and riding style, nearly 90 percent of riders would have more fun while improving their riding skills on either a 600 or 650. Trail riders thrive in this class of snowmobiles. However, for whatever reason, mountain riders tend to gravitate to the highest horsepower option regardless of their riding style and skill level. Perhaps it’s some sort of western pride thing. Regardless, there are very few areas on the mountain that you can’t get to on the smaller sled … although you may have to engage your brain and imagination rather than just your throttle thumb. 30 SNOWEST DECEMBER 2025
Arctic Cat, Polaris and Ski-Doo each make a mountainspecific snowmobile for this class. Cat has the M 600 Sno Pro; Polaris offers the RMK SP 650; and Ski-Doo features the Summit Adrenaline 600R. When it comes to engine size, the RMK SP 650 leads the class with a 135hp Patriot powerplant that comes with Cleanfire semi-direct injection with a very broad torque curve. Cat features a 600 C-Tec2 engine with dual-stage injection that delivers strong low-end torque and offers 125 hp. SkiDoo has a 125-hp Rotax 600R E-TEC engine with direct injection for superb fuel economy and a quick throttle response.
Cat’s M 600 Sno Pro features the Ascender platform, Arctic Cat Mountain front suspension with Fox QS3 shocks, Alpha single beam rear suspension and two track options: 146 x 15 x 2.6-inch and 154 x 15 x 2.6-inch Power Claw. Polaris’ RMK SP 650 features the Matryx RMK platform with the RMK Adjustable front suspension with Polaris IFP shocks, RMK Khaos rear suspension and a 155 x 15 x 2.6 Series 6 track. SkiDoo’s Summit Adrenaline 600R features the REV Gen5 Deep Snow platform with the RAS 3 front suspension with HPG shocks, the tMotion X rear suspension with two track options: 146 x 16 x 2.5-inch and 154 x 16 x 2.5-inch PowderMax tracks.
The M 600 Sno Pro has a narrow feel making it easy to sidehill and extremely maneuverable. The RMK SP 650 is designed to put the rider forward in a more aggressive riding position and is very predictable in technical terrain. The Summit Adrenaline 600R is the easiest to counter-steer and has the narrowest ski stance which lets it get through tighter spots. For an aggressive rider, the M 600 Sno Pro delivers superb performance. Although it doesn’t have all the horsepower of the RMK SP 650, you wouldn’t be able to convince yourself of that on the snow. The RMK SP 650 is the most predictable ride of the three SNOWEST DECEMBER 2025 31
in technical terrain. It is responsive yet allows the rider to stay in control when spinning from one line to the next. The Summit Adrenaline 600R is the easiest of the three to ride although it feels slightly under-powered when compared to the other two models. Finally, of the three, the M 600 Sno Pro features the lower sticker price, somewhere between $13,000-$13,500 depending on the track length. The Summit Adrenaline 32 SNOWEST DECEMBER 2025
600R is the most expensive of the three, running between $14,200-$14,700. And the RMK SP 650 fits into the $13,800-$14,400 range. If your ego wants the bigger sled, but your budget leans toward the 600-650 sled, perhaps you should consider swallowing some pride and trying out a snowmobile that will literally enhance your riding experience. You just may be surprised how much bang you’ll get for your buck.

Tayler Anderson Peck—The Arctic Cat M 600 Sno Pro 154 is a great sled to learn on. Not too much power but enough to learn the basics. And depending on the past experience of the women riders and sleds they’ve had experience on, I’d recommend this sled. It’s a fun sled with a more affordable price point.
Dave McClure—For riders with limited experience, I’d recommend the 2026 M 600 Sno Pro ES 154 2.6. This sled offers electric start, extremely lightweight for them to learn how to ride it, manageable power, and paired with the 2.6 track it does great in all snow conditions.
