Combining youth sports organizations could happen in Howe to form HYSA
Commissioners of each Howe youth sports league met Wednesday night to discuss having one parent organization for all Howe sports Other nearby cities have similar situations as Van Alstyne has the organization VASA (Van Alstyne Sports Authority)
At the meeting was Howe Youth Football Commissioner Chris Campbell, Howe Youth Baseball
Commissioner Michael Portman, Howe Youth Softball
Commissioner Jessica Acevedo, Howe Youth Volleyball
Commissioner Amber Carter, and Howe Youth Basketball
Commissioner Nick Upton The meeting was directed by Howe Economic Development Director Monte Walker who would like to see all of the organizations work together to make it easier on the community for scheduling and sign-ups Combining efforts would help with the organization of the overall youth sports experience for not only young athletes but for parents It also gives the opportunity to brand Howe sports with one logo for all sports similar to other cities

The group reviewed the bylaws of another community that has had a similar organization for many years and have already gone through growth stages as a community
The commissioners are scheduled to meet again on Jan 9 to move forward and adopt bylaws and form the 501c3 non-profit organization or to move to continue to operate as individual organizations

Although Christmas comes but once a year, the traditions of Christmas are with us all year long One of my favorite Christmas songs is “Mary, Did You Know?” I olumn nsettia Joel R inister -green merica
Did you know? That it is customary for Finnish people to visit the gravesites of departed loved ones on Christmas?
Did you know? That Norway is the birthplace of the yule log? The word yule came from the Norse word hweol, meaning wheel because they believed the sun was a great wheel of fire that rolled towards and then away from the earth Ever wonder why the family fireplace is such a central part of the typical Christmas scene? This tradition dates back to the Norse Yule log It is probably also responsible for the popularity of log-shaped cheese, cakes, and desserts during the holidays
Did you know? Decorating evergreen trees had always been a part of the German winter solstice tradition In the 1820s, the first German immigrants decorated Christmas trees in Pennsylvania After Germany’s Prince Albert married Queen Victoria, he introduced the Christmas tree tradition to England
Did you know? That pinatas are not only for birthday parties but are a tradition in Mexico at Christmas They are filled with coins and candy, and children hit them until they break and shower the treats to the floor
Did you know? Christmas cards were being made around 1830 by R H Pease, the first American card maker, in Albany, New York, and Louis Prang, a German who immigrated to America in 1850

Did you know? Celts considered mistletoe to have magic powers It was said to have the ability to heal wounds and increase fertility Celts hung mistletoe in their homes in order to bring themselves good luck and ward off evil spirits The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe started in Victorian England Sprigs of mistletoe were hung in doorways or from the ceiling and if someone was standing underneath, they would be kissed by someone in the room
Did you know? Caroling also began in England Wandering musicians would travel from town to town visiting castles and homes of the rich In return for their performance, the musicians hoped to receive a hot meal or money
Did you know? In France, Christmas is called Noel This comes from the French phrase les bonnes nouvelles, which means “the good news” and refers to the gospel
Did you know? Italians call Christmas Il Natale, meaning “the birthday,” so they greet each other with Buon Natale
Did you know? St Francis of Assisi created the first living nativity in 1224 to help explain the birth of Jesus to his followers
Did you know? The jolly old elf with the white beard, who gives out presents to kids who have been nice, has many names depending on the country where he visits: St Nicholas, Kris Kringle, St Nick, and Santa Claus (US, Canada, Australia); Father Christmas (United Kingdom); 'Weihnactsmann' (Christmas man); Pere Noel (Belgium and France); Babbo Natale (Italy); and Grandfather Frost (Russia)
So Feliz Navidad! Merry Christmas! Buon Natale! Happy Holidays! Joyous Noel!
