The four members induced into the Hall of Honor were Jean Norman, Donal Gilstrap, J J Chisum, and Bob Walker
Micah Belden accepted the honor on behalf of his gandfather Bob Walker "When I think of Bob Walker, he was one of the best family men there ever could have been If you knew him, he was known for his frugality He was so tight, that he squeeked " His grandson Monte Walker told the crowd that one of Bob Walker's sayings was that he grew up so poor that if it cost a nickel to poop, he had to fart "
J J Chisum was inducted next and to honor him was his granddaughter Kim Chisum Gentry She recalled "A day in the life of James Jackson Chisum" which started early with breakfast and a bible and opening the store early just in case anyone might need anything His day finished late at Chisum's One Stop Grocery but always finished with family time "He took great pride in serving his community that in return served him " said his granddaughter "He always gave what he wanted to receive and his response to receiving this honor would be, 'I didn't do anything special' and after thinking about it, he would just say, 'thank you '"
Jean Norman was honored next and gave a great speech that was serious at times and had the crowd laughing at times She spanned the years of her leadership efforts and there were many She finished with, "My love and my appreciation goes to all of the wonderful people of Howe because there's always been those that extended their hands to help me and there have been many"
Donal Gilstrap was the final inductee of the night for the 2017 Howe Hall of Honor Class Gilstrap, while being recognized for his outstanding leadership as an educator, talked mostly about his farming venture with the Norman's after his retirement from Howe ISD
The evening began with the City of Howe's Director of Economic Development Monte Walker handing out certificates and recognizing longtime organizations and businesses in the community The oldest organization in town is the post office which dates back prior to the Howe name change when it was the Summit Post Office Postmaster LeAndra Beckemeyer spoke to the crowd for the recognition
"For 144 years there's been a post office here in Howe and we hope that it continues for a long time " said Beckemeyer, who is the 27th Howe Postmaster and second longest tenured

Howe jumped out to an early lead thanks to Hargrove's triple that scored Streetman Stubblefield then drove in Hargrove to give Howe a 2-0 lead in the first inning A two-out walk to Ross in the top of the third sparked a three-run rally by the Lady Bulldogs Back to back triples by Fulenchek and Emily Sanders drove in runs Erin Blackburn drove in Sanders to give Howe a 6-0 lead after the top of the third
It was the fifth inning that the doors blew off of the game. Howe put a nine spot on the board thanks in part to a two-run homer by Hargrove The Howe girls nearly hit for the cycle twice in the inning with four singles, two doubles, two triples, and the homer The 9-run inning gave Howe their final score of 16-0 and would set up game two the following night
On Friday, Howe returned to Princeton with Hargrove on the bump She allowed seven base way of four hits and three walks, but was far and away good enough to get the win on Friday Especially with the hot-hitting Lady Bulldogs who put up another 13 runs on 10 hits in the championship deciding, 13-3 win

Extra bases were not the name of this game, however, as Streetman picked up the only non-single of the game with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fourth inning But Howe even topped the 9-run inning the day prior by putting up a 12 spot on Sunnyvale in the bottom of that fourth inning thanks to all of the team's 10 hits in the game coming in the inning
Howe was trailing, 2-1 coming into the fourth inning, but the bright light of Sunnyvale were dimmed ever so quickly
Fulenchek, Stubblefield, Hargrove each had multi-hit games with two each Hargrove, Stubblefield and Payton Griffin each led Howe with two runs scored each. Hargrove helped herself out at the plate by leding the Lady Bulldogs with three RBI
Howe will face Pottsboro next. Howe won 11-2 in their only matchup which took place back on March 3 In that game, Stubblefield went seven innings, striking out seven, allowing four hits and not walking a single batter Ross led the team with three RBI in that game which was played as part of a
The Whitesboro Bearcats (18-7) were impressive on the mound in both games played of the best of three-game bi-district series Howe (17-10) was kept on the scoreboard in both of the Friday night games at Sherman's Veterans Field
Howe's luck at the plate was voided by great pitching by the Bearcat's Cayden Cobb who allowed only a double by Tyler Grisham in the second inning
After the Grisham hit, Cobb sat down 16 straight Bulldog hitters team had great pitching and one team played subpar defense The result was a 5-0 win for Howe (178) and a matchup with Whitesboro (event) at Sherman in the first round of the playoffs

A combination of six errors committed by Van Alstyne and a solid starting outing by Howe sophomore Mason Riggs and three shutdown innings in relief by senior Matt Griffin was truly the story of the game Riggs escaped a one-out bases loaded jam in the third inning by getting a strikeout and a fly out That was the only trouble Riggs ran into the entire game as he went four innings, allowing no runs on five hits, striking out four, and walking one Griffin’s numbers were equally impressive as he tossed three shutout innings, allowing one hit, and striking out five.

Mason Riggs gets a talk from Coach Rollins Michelle Carney/Howe Enterprise
The game that might be remembered for quite some time was the playoff seeding game with Van Alstyne that was also held at Veterans Field in Sherman. The game of baseball always comes down to pitching and defense In the baseball version of the Silver Spike Monday night at
Howe took an early lead in the bottom of the first as Griffin drove in Brice Krantz on a line drive single to right Howe added two more runs in the third as Jaden Matthews came home from third on a wild pitch and Griffin reached on a shortstop error that allowed Krantz to score
In the bottom of the fourth with two on, Krantz singled to left and the ball escaped the left fielder allowing both runners to score for

My early memories include moving to Howe in 1936 We lived across the street from where the middle school is now located (Editor's note: This is now the Howe ISD Administration Campus) and later we lived in the telephone office (my mother Gladys Davis was the telephone agent/operator for the Texas Telephone Co ) I walked to school every morning, then walked home for lunch each day and then returned to school in the afternoon - eight blocks daily!
I grew up during World War II and I have memories of collecting iron and all kinds of

Founders Day
steel products which we would take to sell/donate to be made into bullets/machinery for use in the war
Also we planted "Victory Gardens" on the school ground and we got out of school early in the afternoons to pick cotton on the Clyde King farm (everyone else was "off" fighting the war) so kids got out of school early to help pick the crops We went to school on Saturdays to make up for this time
Many of the boys in the high school classes left school to join the service I think all the kids were very close to one another in those dayas as we grew up in an era with war very close to us
My dady, Custer Davis, was a World War I veteran and he worked at Perrin AFB near Sherman during my high school days This made me double conscious of the current world situation My brother C V, sister Jeanette and I stood in awe many days watching F-85 bombers fly over Howe Their prectice flights were to fly from Perrin to Howe and return
The Bent Creek Band provided great live music throughout the Founders Day event locations in Van Alstyne and each are highly appreciated by the Howe Area Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the event

Todd Creekmore once again reclaimed the title of the Advanced Business Machines Lawmowing Race Sam's Lawnmowers of Sherman also helped in sponsoring the event Creekmore won for the second time in three years Howe's EDC Director Monte Walker challenged and defeated Howe Chamber President Robert Cannaday in an exhibition race Walker was disqualified from the championship round due to trying to use an illegal mower (zero turn) He was stopped by Howe Police Sergeant Michael Hill in what may have been a staged performance
The day was full of fun, food, bounce houses, pony rides, horse rides and live music It's hard to complain about warm weather, but it was certainly warm

The 32nd Annual Founders Day will take place on the first Saturday in May of 2018 howechamber.com http://howeenterprise.com/events/
