Economic Development Director

Monte Walker says that interest has spurred rapidly since the Summit Hill development began in June of last year

"It's not a secret that our city wants and needs, and our citizens are thirsty for, a large-scale grocer" said Walker "In the past two years, we have made great strides in working towards that goal and I think it's just a matter of time We are having conversations with grocers and they

The city may only have a proper population of around 3,000, but the numbers look much better for what the marketers are seeking Howe's 10minute radius population is 10,162 and the 15-minute radius is a whopping 44,867

"Those are the true figures that matter to marketers " said Walker "If we were trying to draw a large grocer on a continued on page 9

Faith by Roger Tidwell

That reminds me of the two buffalo in Montana out grazing on the plain. A cowboy rode up on his horse and looked at the buffaloes and said, “You are the ugliest critters on planet earth You stink to high heaven, you’ve got ugly beady eyes, those humps on your back are grotesque; and if I had a powerful enough buffalo gun I would blow you both to kingdom come right now” Then he turned his horse and rode off One buffalo looked at the other one and said, “I believe we’ve just heard a discouraging word ”

During our Colonial days, wealthy ladies were proud of their oak floors At least once a week servants would wet-rub and then dry-rub these floors to make them shiny It was a very simple job involving running a wet mop along the grain of the wood and then a dry mop But sometimes a careless worker would mop across the grain and it would produce streaks on the floor When that happened the lady of the house would say “you’re rubbing the floor the wrong way” That is where we get our phrase “to rub someone the wrong way”

In this article I want to tell you how to rub people not the wrong way but the right way It will work any time, any place, on just about anybody All you have to do to “rub people the right way” is to encourage them Encouraging others is easy to do and every one of us can do it

A member of my church reminds me every so often that everyone needs to be encouraged You know what, he’s right All of us need to be encouraged from time to time

Remember the old familiar song, Home on the Range? Here’s the words of the first stanza: “Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam, Where the deer and the antelope play; Where seldom is heard a discouraging word, And the skies are not cloudy all day” It kind of makes you want to move to Montana doesn’t it? Yet, even if you move to Montana you would still face discouragement

Most of us hear too many discouraging words and not enough encouraging words As the old rhyme says: “Once I did bad and that I heard ever; Twice I did good, but that I heard never” Mark Twain once said, “I can live two months on one good compliment ”

In the Bible there is a man known for his encouragement His name is Barnabas and you find him throughout the book of Acts The way Barnabas encouraged others is something each of can do, it’s simple Like Barnabas, all you have to do to be an encourager is to try and be a blessing to others That’s it, simple right?

An encourager is someone who is always trying to find ways they can bless someone, or help someone, or strengthen someone The best way I know to do that is with your words. Encourage others with encouraging words You might be surprised at the difference you make is the lives of others

Like the encouraging words of this man’s wife The story goes like this As a boy, life was hard His dad died when he was just five years old. He dropped out of school after the sixth grade By the time he was 17 he had lost job after job after job He married at 18, had a baby at 19, and was separated from his wife at 20. He became a railroad conductor, but he got fired He joined the Army, but he washed out He became a farmer and lost his shirt He applied to law school but got turned down He became an insurance salesman and couldn’t give it away

Finally, he became a dishwasher and a cook in a two-bit restaurant. About his only success was that he was able to persuade his wife to come back to him and together they made a living cooking and washing dishes in this little restaurant At 65 years of age he retired He went to the mailbox and got his first Social Security check that had a grand total of $105 This 65-year-old man was so discouraged he decided to commit suicide He went under a shade tree and wrote out his will Somehow his wife found out about his plan and confronted him, and said, “Let me tell you one thing you can do, I believe better than anybody I’ve ever known ” He said, “What’s that?” She said, “You can cook ” He said, “Do you really think so?” She said, “You’re fabulous ”

Well that gave him an idea He waiting for so long ” went down to a local bank and borrowed $87 dollars against his Social Security check He went to the supermarket, bought some chicken and some boxes, fried it with a special recipe he had developed, put it in boxes and began going door-to-door in Corbin, Kentucky selling his chicken It became so popular he came up with the idea to try to sell it to restaurants Well, guess what? He was turned down 1,014 times before a man named John Y Brown tasted his chicken and said, “I’ll go into business with you ” That man’s name was Colonel Harlan Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken What was the secret? Same man, same recipe, same ability, same chicken The only difference a word of encouragement Encourage someone today! continued from page 6

Daughter of Leon and Joan Thornhill and a sister to Cindy, Butch and Dickie, Anna Thornhill became Anna Anderson in 1994 when she married Don Anderson of Bells Together, they own Anderson Auctioneers and have four daughters, Erin Ingram, Leslie Williams Lori Sanders and

Coming from working parents and a heavy influence of good people, Anna Anderson has been able to hit a milestone in a career that allowed her to keep her family first in a community she loves

“Some people might think that I have not gone very far in life, being that I am within a mile from where I grew up went to high
