HOWE’S HAPPENINGS Victory Independent Publishing

I know not everyone gets excited about the cold weather, but like it or not, as of this week, it is here! I get more excited for the cold weather than anything else the whole fall/winter season. As a borderline minimalist for most of my adult life I am not big on decorating, doing the excessive gift thing on Christmas, etc. but I DO get excessively excited about the cold and all that comes with it– baking, cozy hot drinks, flannels, fuzzy socks, and passed down traditions I’ve adapted for the season, like the one below:

Here is a cozy cold weather tip passed down and adapted from my grandmother: Every year my grandma was with us, as soon as we turned on the heater she would start a daily big boiling pot of water to keep it humid in the house– which led to lower heating bills and less sickness. I have since adapted it to daily add things to mine such as lemon and orange peels, eucalyptus leaves, spices like clove, cinnamon sticks, etc. and even essential oils! Not only is my living space nice and cozy warm all winter with a lower heating bill, but it smells absolutely wonderful! Important Voting Details You Need to Know This Week Ashley Husbands Early voting continues this week through October 31st with official Voting Day on November 4th. Local voting centers’ locations, times, etc. are listed in the “Local Events” section of the paper this week. There are 17 propositions on the ballot this year. What is a proposition? According to LegalClarity.com a proposition is defined as follows, “A ballot proposition, also known as a ballot measure, is a direct democracy mechanism allowing citizens to vote on proposed laws, constitutional amendments, or other issues. These measures appear on a statewide or municipal ballot for vot-

ers to approve or reject, bypassing the traditional legislative process. This direct participation empowers the public to influence policy decisions directly, rather than solely through elected representatives. Ballot propositions are distinct from voting for political candidates, as they focus on specific policies or issues. This process enables citizens to directly enact new laws or change existing ones, rather than relying on their elected officials. They serve as a tool of direct democracy, giving voters a direct say in the laws that govern them and the policies that affect their communities.”

When it comes to voting and similar matters, this is a newspaper that attempts (Continued on Page 9)

New Social Media Ad Opportunities Now Available! Ashley Husbands Beginning in November, The Howe Enterprise will be offering a new advertisement opportunity for local businesses. Traditionally, we have offered ad space in the newspaper itself and we will continue to do so, prices for that have remained steady for years despite prices rising on everything else. The

reason we have kept the prices the same is that the owner of this publication is not only a small independent business owner for the paper, but continues to run an independent massage therapy business. The owner “bleeds American” when it comes to independence and the right to pursue owning independent small businesses. Anyone who owns a business knows we have been hit (Continued on Page 9)

History of Halloween

Explore the ancient traditions of Samhain all the way to Halloween msn.com Ashley Husbands As we did for Independence Day this year, we are here with another article on the history of a holiday held this week, Halloween. I am no historian, so this was sourced from History.com and Brittanica.com. I have taken the information given and put it in historical date order, as best as I can with the information provided.
