HOWE’S HAPPENINGS Victory Independent Publishing
I was reflecting this week as I was putting the paper together how The Howe Enterprise truly is what you as a community make it. I took this newspaper on, not just because I liked the town but primarily because I believe with my whole heart in “free journalism”. I loved the concept of freedom of speech in this country and wanted to be a part of that when I began to pursue being educated as a journalist. I soon found out “freedom of speech” is a loose term. Journalists aren’t openly killed in our country but I wouldn’t say generally the media has freedom in its expression– It’s owned and muzzled by it’s handlers to be swayed as they desire. Actual, straight forward truth without sway became a forgotten concept. I hated that, so I left the profession planning never to return, until this opportunity came around. We are a small town that is getting bigger everyday and there will be increased news as time goes on. From a practical standpoint, what gets reported is influenced by what I actually hear about going on around town and I cannot be everywhere at once– I need community members’ help. I carefully try to consider the direction I want to take the paper with my strong opinions vs. what I consider to be true journalism, which strives to be unbiased. Even only reporting certain events as opposed to others in a town (or country) can be biased. That is where the community comes in– if you want more variety of things discussed and reported on– email me, even general opinions are welcome, we have an opinion section for a reason! Local Ladies Distribute Ten Commandment Posters Kathryn Puckett Senate Bill 10, The Ten Commandments Bill went into effect September 1, 2025. It requires every publicschool classroom in Texas to accept and display a Ten Commandments poster in a conspicuous location in the classroom that are privately donated as State funds may not be used for their purchase. Texas Senator Brent Hagenbuch, SD 30 generously purchased beautifully printed posters on rich dark blue background for ALL Grayson County schools. Volunteers from Grayson County Republican Women (GCRW) Marie Curtis, Kathy Puckett, Robin McCoy, Deby Geiger distributed all the posters in just two days while also delivering pocket Constitutions to all Grayson County 8th Graders.
Distribution of Pocket Constitutions is a yearly Literacy project for all 8 th graders, funded by members of GCRW during the weeks of Constitution studies. Besides supporting elected officials, GCRW participates in many community enrichment efforts. If GCRW can be of assistance to your school or organization or you are interested in learning more about GCRW, contact your Howe Precinct #106 Chair Robin McCoy (Robinvmccoy@gmail.c om). You may also find us on Facebook or just stop by Mariachi’s on the third Friday of each month at noon to meet elected officials and hear interesting speakers. October 17 th speaker was Rep. Shelley Luther. November 21 st speaker will be Judge Bruce Dawsey. The public is always welcome. New Ten Commandment Posters for Howe ISD Photo Credit: Robin McCoy
