HOWE’S HAPPENINGS There has been recent concern in journalism circles of an “AI takeover”- If a computer can write articles, who needs journalists? Last week, I learned why we aren’t in as much danger of that as I previously thought. I (the editor) am fairly young in the grand scheme, but old enough to have been trained in this craft before AI came along. In the “Unsinkable Karla McDonald” article last week, I was excited to find out that now AI could transcript voice recorded interviews to text. No more writing out quotes, or so I thought! It ended up it was more work to try to rewrite the AI errors. Combined with human error attempting to fix it, it resulted in a grammatically poor and choppily written article, in retrospect.
Keeping up with technology can be a great thing– like moving to an online paper as print newspapers are dying out. However, some older ways of doing things still have a place. Here at The Howe Enterprise we try to do journalism the “old way” without sensationalism, and neutral focused national and world news in The Patriot Pony section. As far as AI goes– I learned my lesson– that working with it is one “new trick” this “old dog” will be passing up on from here on out. Rest assured– there will be no “AI takeover” of The Howe Enterprise

New Pending Bill Could Halt Controversial Black Mountain Dorchester Cement Kiln Ashley Husbands This week we sat down with County Commissioner Josh Marr to discuss the progress of a recent bill he and Judge Bruce Dawsey visited Austin to present regarding the cement kiln projected to be located in Dorchester, TX. Here is some background information provided about process and companies involved in this ongoing controversial topic: “The bill hinges around two industries, one being the silicone semiconductor wafer manufacturing industry which is Global Wafers and the other is the other industry is the cement kiln or aggregate production, which is Black Mountain Dorchester. Global Wafers is located in Sherman off of 1417, they had their grand opening May 15th of this yearthey have already pro-
duced their first order and are already in production of their wafer, which is a 300 millimeter wafer basically 12 inches around, they ship them to companies like Texas Instruments. Their process is very seismic sensitive because they have a crystal ingot that is drawn on a string no bigger than a writing pen. If there are vibrations during that drawing process it will cause the ingot to get destabilized and it will crumble onto the ground- molten crystals, like 3500 degrees. The batch that takes three days of continuous pulling will be wasted and it takes another seven days to get it all cleaned up and back into production. This company had Globi -tech which is just down the road, and also MEMC, which has been here since the 70’s producing similar wafers, so they know this is a stable environment here. Also, it is a military advantageous area- we are in the middle of the country, so if there was foreign ad-

So, for this sensitive process, what they have to do is drill into the bedrock and they’ve got their crystal ingot pullers based into the bedrock, that is stable. There is other construction in the area, highway

traffic etc. that vibrates the topical layer of sediment but it doesn’t vibrate the bedrock section which is probably about 100 feet down. That is about a 3.5 billion dollar facility that they have already built and they announced in the grand opening that they are going to include another
4 billion dollars to build another facility right next to it- so we are looking at about a 7.5 billion dollar investment in just these two buildings, not including the 35 billion dollars that TI has. I don’t know the issue of sensitivity of TI, I am sure it is similar to the same thing but they (Continued on Page 12)
