This weekend there is an opportunity to take trash to the Precinct 1 Clean up to dump. Details of what will be accepted, location, etc. can be found on Page 12 of the publication this week.

Thank you very much for more questions for the school board this week. Feel free to send questions through the end of this week. Next week I will begin contacting the school board candidates for their participation. The article will be released in the following weeks, a bit closer to election time. I will attempt to leave time for us to do another round, if desired by the community. There was also talk at the Texoma Patriots meeting of conducting School Board Election debates for Howe and Van Alstyne. This has not been confirmed but as soon as we know we will inform you.

I would like to dare to ask the community for your help on another project. I would like to start a “ resources page” for Grayson County in the paper–things like Feed My Sheep and Peggy’ s Porch. The cost of living isn’t getting any cheaper and I believe we are meant to help each other. Can y’all help me get a great resources page going to all help each other? I know some resources but I can’t possibly know them all.

Well,we’retakingdownthethistle sockandhangingupthenectarfeeder. TheAmericanGoldfinchhavedepartedandit’sabouttimetogetreadyfor anotherannualvisitor,theRubythroatedHummingbird. OtherhummingbirdsreportedhereareRufousandBlackchinned.

ReadingTheSibleyGuidetoBirdLife andBehaviorwelearnedthattheRuby -throatedHummingbirdsflynon-stop acrosstheGulfofMexicofromYucataneachspringandfall. Withnorefuelingspotsontheroute,theydouble theirweight,startingaweekorsobeforemigrating. Individualbirdsfollow thesamerouteoneachtrip. Rather thanflyingasaflock,theytravelwith flocksofotherbirdspecies.

Weshouldbeseeingthembytheend ofMarchorfirstofApril,ifnotsooner. Toprepareyournectarfeeder,give itagoodcleaning. Theformulafor nectarisone-partwhitesugarandfourpartswater. Donotusehoneyinplace ofsugar.Nocoloringisneeded,thered onyourfeederissufficientcolorto attractthem.Weheatthewatertoboilingornearboiling,todissolvethesug-

armorereadily. Youcanstorethemix intherefrigeratorbutallowittowarm upbeforefillingthefeeder.

Untiltheweatherturnshotyoucan leavenectarinyourfeederforuptoa week;cleanthefeederandaddfresh nectareverytwoorthreedaysduring hotweathertopreventfermentation. Honormatters. Inanyorganization,militaryorcivilian, theimportance ofintegrity,loyalty,anddedicationarebeyondquestion. Itistheseprinciplesthatled theUnitedStatestovictoryinWorld WarI,awarnowacenturyinthepast. MillionsofAmericansservedinthis war,somegivingeverythingfortheir country,includingTexans. Oneofthe menleadingAmericantroopsintobattlewasGen.RobertHowze,acareer officerfromEastTexaswhoserved withquietdedicationandhonor throughouthis38-yearcareer.

RobertLeeHowzewasborn inOverton,asmallcommunityjust eastofTyler,in1864. Hewasbornin themidstoftheCivilWarastheConfederateeffortnearedcollapse. His father,JamesHowze,servedasacaptaininthe14th TexasCavalry. Growingup,hewasinspiredbyhis father’sownwartimeservicetoseeka militarycareerofhisown.

Howzegraduated fromHubbardCollege,moreofacollege-preparatoryschool,in1883. He wasawardedanappointmentto theUnited StatesMilitaryAcademyatWest Point. Whenhegraduatedin1888,he earnedacommissionasalieutenant andwasassignedtotheSixthCavalry intheNewMexicoTerritory.

In1890,thearmygrewconcernedaboutthegrowthoftheGhost DancereligionattheBlackHillsIndianReservationinSouthDakotaand theassociatedceremonialdances. Fearingarebellionwasaboutto erupt,armyunitsacrosstheWestwere senttothereservationtorestoreorder. Whatresultedwasthemass shootingsofunarmedcivilians,culminatingintheWoundedKneeMassacre inDecember1890inwhich150Sioux werekilled. Howzeandhisunitwere notinvolvedinthatincident,andactionsagainsttheSiouxcontinued. HowzewasawardedtheCongressionalMedalofHonorforhisactionsinanengagementwithagroupof SiouxinJanuary1891.Themedals awardedduringthecampaign,however,havebecomeincreasinglycontroversialsincethattime.

By1905,nowalieutenantcolonel,Howzewasnamedcommandant ofcadetsatWestPoint. Heemphasizedhonorandintegrityascommandant. Whenonecadetwasostracized byhisentireclassforreportingahazingincidentin1907,Howzethreatenedtoexpeltheentireclass. He wouldgoontoservewithGen.John Pershing’spunitiveexpeditionintoMexicoin1916againstPanchoVilla. Howzewasthenassigned toFortBlissinElPasoandpromoted tobrigadiergeneralin1917.

Americawasbeingdrawninto theGreatWarinEurope. President WoodrowWilsonhadattemptedto stayneutralinthefightingandeven triedtonegotiateapeacesettlement sincethewarstartedin1914. In1917, afterGermanythreatenedtoattack Americanshipsandattemptedtoin-

citeMexicotoattack theUS,Americadeclaredwar onGermany. Quickly,millionsof menweredraftedintotheserviceina warto,asWilsonsaid,“makethe worldsafefordemocracy.” Hewasgivencommandofthe 38th InfantryDivision,trainingas manynewrecruitsaspossiblebefore sendingthemtoFrance. Thefighting wasfierce. Americancasualties surged. Hewaspromotedtomajor generalandgivencommandofthe ThirdDivisioninthedecisiveMeuseArgonneOffensiveinOctober 1918. Americantroopsfoughtwith greatcourageunderHowze’scommand. Theoffensivefinishedoffthe exhaustedGermans,whoaskedfora cease-fireafteryearsofbattleandmillionsdeadacrossEurope. Thewar officiallyendedonNovember11, 1918,adayrememberedafterwardas ArmisticeDayandtodayknownas VeteransDay.

Howzeandhisforcesstayed inGermanyuntil1919asanoccupationalforce. Germanywasinthe midstofrevolutionafterthewar,and theAlliesstayedtomaintainorder. He wasthenreturnedtoFortBliss.

InAmerica,BillyMitchell,a decoratedarmygeneral,sawanew warcomingonthehorizonandtriedto warnthenation. Mitchelldesperately soughtsupportfordevelopingtheArmyAirCorpsandnewaviationtechnologyandforesawtheseriousdeficienciesinAmericandefenses inHawaii. However,Mitchell’sbitter andpubliccriticismsofarmypreparednessandairtechnologydevelopmentledtohisdemotionandreassignmentstoanarmycampinSanAntonioby1925. Hiscontinuedcriticisms ledtochargesofinsubordinationanda courtmartialbyearly1926.

Gen.Howzepresidedoverthe boardofjudgeshearingthecourtmartialofMitchell. Itwouldbehislast majordutyforthearmy. Inthewidely -publicizedhearing,Mitchellwas foundguiltyandsuspendedforfive yearsfromtheservice.

ThegeneralpassedawayquietlyinColumbus,Ohio,inSeptember 1926,alittlemorethansevenmonths aftertheMitchelltrial. Histwosons, bothWestPointgraduatesthemselves, wouldservehonorablecareersinthe army,bothreachingtherankofgeneral. ThearmyrememberedtheserviceofHowzeandhonoredhis memorybynamingCampHowzefor himin1941. Thecampwasanarmy trainingcenternearGainesville,near thesiteofthemodern-daymunicipal airport,beforeitclosedin 1946. AnotherCampHowzewas establishedinSouthKoreabeforeit wasturnedovertoSouthKoreancommandin2005.

LearningwhoGodisand whoweareinHim

Howmany timeswillit needtobedeclaredthatwe canhaveas muchofGodas wewant?And howmanytears willweshed fromthesadnessofknowing thatmostpeople onlywant enoughtoget by?Havingaseriousspiritualrelationship withGodisdifficult,asittakesahigh levelofdesireanddisciplineonourpart.If wearenotpassionateaboutdevelopinga constantawarenessofHispresence,our emotionshaveatendencytoslideintoan easierroutineofjustcallingonHimwhen weneedsomething.Havingacovenant bondbasedononlywhatHecangiveus isnotwhatHehadinmind.

SinceGodisnottangiblyvisibleanddoes nottalktousaudibly,wearelefttoour owndiligenceandresponsibilitytobond withHimbyfaith.Yes,webecome strongerthemorewemaketimetoknow Him.Doyoutakethetimetogetaway withHimeveryday,toshareyourheart, andtellHimhowmuchyouloveandtrust Him?WearefamiliarwithourThanksgivingholiday,wherewespendtheday thinkingaboutourblessingsandtelling HimhowmuchweappreciateallthatHe doesforus,butthetruthisthateveryday weshouldexpressourloveandworship toHim,evenwhenwearegoingthrough ahardtime.Wedesiretohearabouthow muchHelovesusandwantstoblessus, butifweonlyloveandpraiseHimwhen thingsaregoingwell,whatkindofarelationshipisthis?

WhenweneglectknowingGod,weare missingthebeautyandfullnessofloving Him.Someareconvincedthatiftheyattendchurch,thisistheirwayofproving theyknowandloveHim.However,in reality,justshakinghands,singingsongs, andlisteningtoadevotionisnotthesame aslearninghowtofellowshipwithHim daily.Donotmisunderstandme,goingto churchiswonderful,butitdoesnottake theplaceoflivingintheconstantawarenessofGod’spresence.Advancinginour faithandprogressinginourpersonalrelationshipwithHimcomesfromreading, studying,worshiping,growinginourdiscernment,andpraying.Onlyattendingan assemblywithoutpursuingHiminthe secretplaceoftheMostHighisjustsettlingforreligioustraditions.Yousee, reachingthehigherlevelsofspiritualmaturitywillnotjusthappenautomatically;it requiresustodrawnearertoHim.

Accordingtothedefinitionofconditional love,it’sanaffectionandattachmentdependentonspecificbehaviors,achievements,orconditionsbeingmet.Itis “earned”love,oftentakingtheformof “I'llloveyouif”,anditcanbewithdrawn orwithheldifexpectationsarenotmet. Thiscreatesahigh-pressure,insecureenvironment,oftenleadingtopeoplepleasing,emotionalinvalidation,andanxiety.AnexamplewouldbeI’llloveyouif youmakegoodgrades,orbuymejewelry,butifyoudon’tdoit,Iwillbeoffended andresentyou.Thisisacommondynamicinourearthlyrelationships,butwhenit comestoGod,wearenottohavea “MagicGenie”lovethatisconditionalon whatwewantHimtodoforus.Conditionalloveisoftencontrastedwithunconditionallove,whichisgivenfreely,regardlessofcircumstances.

It’struewedonotalwaysunderstandwhy thingshappen,butthisiswhyit’sim-

portanttodrawasclosetoGodaswecan, sothateveninthemidstofdifficultcircumstances,wecanrestinourfaithin knowingthatHewillalwaysloveus.This lifeisonlytemporary,andourhighest honoristotrustourCreator.InJeremiah 33:3,theLordinvitesustoseekHisface regardlessofouremotionalstate.“Call untoMe,andIwillanswerthee,andshow yougreatandmightythingswhichyou haveneverknown.”It’sworthconsidering thatneglectingtobebondedwithJesus couldbethereasonwhymanypeopleare anxiousandfearfulabouttheirlivesand thelifetocome.Allowtheloveandjoyof theLordtoliftyouuptoday,andrememberthatGodhasalwayslovedyouandis longingtospendtherestofeternitywith you.Weareaworkinprogress,andour livesaretobeadailyclassroomdedicated tolearningwhoGodisandwhowearein Him.
