Next week, we will be writing an article about how the “ new” owner, myself , has decided to handle all elections in The Howe Enterprise moving forward. We will explain what we are doing and why we are doing it. In the meantime, the next major election that seems to be gaining dramatic traction around town is the School Board Elections. We staunchly refuse to become a “gossip paper” however, I am willing to put my own name on difficult questions pointed at our candidates. I would like to give all of you an opportunity to send me anything you would like to ask candidates. To keep it fair, we will ask the same questions to every candidate and give them an opportunity to answer for themselves– so keep this in mind when sending the newspaper questions. If the questions are “gossip stirring”, using no tact, class, respect, etc. they will immediately be omitted from possible use. Ultimately, my name is who takes “the hit” for what we publish – so I will decide which questions to use. OnMonday,February 2,theGraysonCounty SpellingBeebrought togetherseventalented spellersfromschool districtsacrossGrayson Countyforanexciting andchallengingcompetition.KaneAdenijiand JudeChristmanrepresentedHoweISD. Thesestudentsdemonstratedimpressive spellingskills,focus,

andperseveranceasthe beeprogressed through30intense rounds.

Astheroundscontinued,thelevelofdifficultyincreased,testingeach speller’sknowledgeand composureunderpressure.Familymembers, educators,andsupporterslookedonasthe competitionnarrowed, withspellersremaining poisedanddetermined throughoutthelongcontest.

Thisweekourbeloved “RefSez”Columnis speakingaboutthelocal GrannyBasketball League.Theowner/ editorofTheHoweEnterpriseappreciatesour columnistsandlocal sportsleagues.Sincethis columnisatimesensitivetopic,wehavegiven themthefrontpagetoday.

MywifeandIwereactiveathletesinour youngerdayswithboth ofusparticipatingin multiplesportsformost ofourearlieryearswith myfavoritebeingbaseballandmybetterhalf waspartialtobasketball.

OneSaturdaymorning severalyearsago,she wantedtogo(withmein tow)towatchaNational TournamentinNorman, Oklahomawhichwas affiliatedwithsomething called“GrannyBasketball”.

So,asIansweredyes deartoher,wewereoff toNormanandlocateda verynicesportsfacility adjacenttoOUand pulledintoseeforour-

selveswhatGrannyBasketballwasallabout.

Wewentinsidethis buildingwhichhoused sixplayingcourtsfor basketballandother sports-relatedarenasand apool.

Wethenwalkedintothe basketballportionofthe facilityandwebothobservedthedarndestthing wehadeverobserved. Therewereoveracouple ofhundredladiesdressed inbloomersandsailor smockswithnumbers playingsomekindof basketballofthelikeswe hadneverheardof.

Thesewomenwereages 50-80’sandwerecompetingagainsteachother liketheirlivesdepended onit.

Uponourfirstglanceat theseladies,wedidnot quitegetthegistofthe objectofthegameswe werewatchingandthe ruleswerecompletely foreigntousaswesat backandtookitallin.

Laterthatnight,wegot homeandmywifebeing theintelligentscribe,did someresearchonthe sportandwelearned quicklythatthissportis

veryuniquelytailoredfor womenover50andthe rulesandtheuniforms arefromthe1920’seraof women’sbasketball.

Norunning,nojumping, aplayermayonlydribble theballtwobounces,6 playersonthefloorfor eachteamwith2inthe forwardcourt(offense), twointhemiddlecourt andtwointhebackcourt (defense).

Thissporthasgrownso muchsincethatfirstintroductiontoabout14 Texasteams,oneinLouisiana,5inOklahoma, oneArizona,oneinCalifornia,oneinToronto andseveralinKansas andIowawherethesport originated.

Theseladieswantedto haveanoutletasopposed tobeingstuckinthe housefortheirlater-inlifeyearswhichexplains theirmotto“We’reoff ourrocker”.

Theytraveltodifferent areastocompetewiththe otherteamsandbuild relationshipswiththeir teammatesandtheiropponentsandhavefun. TheannualRedRiver

WhentheUnited Statesbecame independentin 1776,Texaswas farfromthescene. However, oneofthekey figuresofthat era,Benjamin Franklin,stillhadanimpact onTexasanditsownindependence decadeslater. RichardBache,Jr., Franklin’sgrandson,foughtin theTexasRevolution,servedin theTexasnavy,andservedinthefirst sessionsoftheTexasStateSenate.

RichardBache,Jr.,wasborninPhiladelphiain1784. Hisfather,RichardBache,Sr.,wasthesecondpostmastergeneraloftheUnitedStates, followingBenjaminFranklininthe positionandservinginthemidstofthe AmericanRevolutionfrom1776to 1782. HehadmarriedFranklin’sonly daughter,Sarah,severalyearsearlier andhadeightchildrenwithher.

Asachild,Bachehadgottentoknow hisfamousgrandfather,whodiedin Philadelphiain1790. Hisbrothersand cousinsachievedvaryingdegreesof fameandsuccessasengineersand publishers,followingintheirfamous grandfather’sfootstepsinonewayor another. In1798,hewatchedhisolder brother,BenjaminFranklinBache,run afoulofthenotoriousAlienandSeditionActswhenhisnewspaper, theAurora,printedarticlescriticalof PresidentJohnAdams. Unfortunately, hediedbeforethecasewenttotrial.

BacheattendedPhiladelphiaschools andeventuallyenrolledattheUniversityofPennsylvania. Hegraduatedin 1812justbeforetheWarof1812 erupted. Oncethisnewwarwith GreatBritainerupted,heorganizeda volunteerartilleryunit. ThePhiladelphia-basedFranklinFlyingArtillery earnedacclaimduringthewar, withBacheservingascaptain. Healso brieflyservedinthenavy.

Afterthewarended,heserved aspostmasterofPhiladelphia,serving from1815to1828. Itwasthissame positionthathisgrandfatheroccupied from1737to1753,makingBachepart ofthethirdgenerationinhisfamilyto serveasapostalexecutive.

Becauseofhisfamily’sreputation,BachemaintainedcloseconnectionswithpoliticiansacrossPennsylvania. In1805,hemarriedSophia Dallas,thedaughterofUnitedStates AttorneyAlexanderDallas. Alexander DallasrosetobecomeSecretaryofthe TreasuryunderPresidentJamesMadisonin1814,whilehissonGeorge,the namesakeforthepresent-dayCityof Dallas,becamevice-presidentunder PresidentJamesK.Polkin 1845. TheBaches’marriageproduced ninechildren.

In1832,BachefledtoTexasundera cloudofsuspicion,leavinghisfamily behind. Thereasonswerenever clear. Somebiographerssuggestedhe fleddebtcollectorswhileotherspoint towhispersofaccusationsthatembez-

zlementhadoccurredatthePhiladelphiapostofficeduringhistenureas postmaster. However,nochargesof anyillegalactivitywereeverfiled.

HesettledintheBrazoriaareanear modern-dayHouston. When theTexasRevolutionreachedSoutheastTexasinspring 1836,BachejoinedtheLouisianaIndependentVolunteerstocontinuethe fight. Hewaspartof theSanJacintocampaigninApril 1836whenMexicanGen.Antonio LopezdeSantaAnnawascapturedin theaftermath. Gen.SamHouston madehimpartofthegroupofsoldiers guardingSantaAnnaintheaftermath.

Undertheadministration ofTexasPresidentMirabeauB.Lamar,theTexasnavywasreestablished. In1838,Bacheservedas chiefclerkforthenewnavy. Withthe purchaseofthesteamshipZavala,BachedustedoffhisexperiencefromtheUnitedStatesNavy andservedTexasonthehighseason thenewvessel.

In1842,hemovedtoGalveston toserveascommissionerofthenavy yardandascustomscollector. Shortly afterward,hewaselectedajusticeof thepeace,asmall-claimscourtjudge, forGalvestonCounty.

By1845,thequestionofannexationto theUnitedStatesagain emerged. ManypeopleintheUnited StatesandTexasalikewereexcited abouttheprospectofthemerger. Bachewasselectedasadelegate totheAnnexationConvention. However,Bachewasintheminorityandvotedagainstannexation; buthisreasonsweremorepersonal thanpolitical.Ashisgrandfatherhada fallingoutwithhisownparentsand hisownsonthroughouthis life,Bacheperiodicallywouldfind himselfatoddswithmembersofhis ownfamily. Afterhisbrother-in-law, GeorgeDallas,becamevicepresident,Bachesouredontheideaof annexationbecausehedidnotwantto givehimapoliticalvictory.

Nevertheless,Bachewasadelegateatthestateconstitutionalconventionandhelpedcraftthefirststateconstitutionin1845. Hewasalsoelected tothefirstsessionofthe newTexasStateSenate,representing theGalvestonarea. Hecontinuedto serveinthesenateuntilhissudden deaththreeyearslater.

Hischildrenwentontolead impressivelivesoftheirown. Hiseldestson,AlexanderBache,wasanoted scientistandledwhatlaterbecame knownastheU.S.GeodeticSurvey. Threeofhisdaughtersmarried menwhohadconsiderableachievements. Oneson-in-law,WilliamIrwin ofPennsylvania,wentontoservein Congress,whileanother,RobertWalker,becameSecretaryoftheTreasury whileathird,Gen.WilliamEmory, wasanotedsurveyoralongtheborder betweenMexicoandtheUnited States.BachediedinAustinin1848at age64.

Whosaidretirementis theendofourcalling?

Asdayspass, wecancomplainabout timeflyingor rejoiceinour blessings.I neverthought muchabout retirement whenIwas younger,butas thesaying goes,it’snever toolatetobewhatyoumighthave been.HadanyonetoldmeI’dbea schoolteacherlaterinlife,Iwould havebeensurprised.Now,asateacher, Icanhonestlysayit’sthemostexcitingandsatisfyingprofessionIcould haveimagined.Teachingisalaborof love,andhelpingchildrenwiththeir educationisamongourhighestpriorities.Yes,occasionallytheytestmy patience,butmostarerespectfuland justfilledwithexcitementandcuriosity.Jesuslovesthelittlechildren,andI sensetheseriousnessofguidingtomorrow’sleaders,whowillfacedifficultchallenges,astheyarebeingtargetedbythedarkside.It’scriticalfor allofustoleadbyexample,aswe helpthemunderstandrightfrom wrong,toknowGod,andHistruth.

Ibelieveit’simportant,aswegrow older,tostayactiveinsteadofjustlyingaround.Irealizethatsomeolder individualshavehealthissuesandcannotdowhattheywouldliketodo,but manyareindecentshape,butjust choosetodonothing.Itseemsthe moreapersongivesintotheirexcuses ofhowtheyaretiredfrompayingtheir dues,theworsetheyfeel.Inactivityis alrightwhenweareresting,butthe morewegetupandgetgoing,thebetterwefeel.Iencourageeveryoneto findsomethingreallyimportanttoyou andseehowyoucangetinvolved. We’vehearditsaidthatwemustnot livetowork,butworktolive.Your goalsareachievedthemomentyou commityourselftothem,sonomatter howoldyoufeel,orhowmanytimes you’veofficiallyretired,it’snevertoo latetogivetheworldalittlemoreof whatGodhasgiventoyou.Weshould prayandaskforGod’sinspiration, strength,andwisdom,buthopefully,a personwilleventuallydiscoverthathe orsheisthemaster-gardeneroftheir soulandthedecision-makeroftheir destiny.

Iwastalkingtoanolderteacherthe otherdayduringourplanningperiod, andwechattedabouthowdifferentthe worldisnowfromwhatitwaswhen weweregrowingup.Wetouchedon everythingfromthehighcostofliving andhowmuchtheeducationsystem haschanged,tohowagodlesssociety hasrearrangedtheculture,mostlyfor theworse.Iagreedwhenshesaidwe needgoodrolemodelsforthesechildren,andhowteachersareonthefront linewiththeopportunityandresponsibilitytodemonstrateaChrist-likecharacterwhileplantingpositiveseedsof hopeandtruth.It’ssaidthatateacher takesahand,opensamind,inspiresa heart,andshapesthefuture,andIfirmlyagreethattheinfluenceofagood teachercanneverbeerased.Teachers

donotjustneedemployment;they knowit’stheirlife’scalling.I’vebeen aministerforover40years,andwantedtocontinuetryingtomakeadifference,asit’strue,teacherschangethe world–onechildatatime.SheconcludedthatweneededmoreChristian leadersinvolvedwithpubliceducation andthankedmeformyefforts.

Wewentonwithourday,going throughtheswitchclasses,andfinally, attheendofmylastclass,therewasa youngmanwhostayedbehindafew minutestopickuppencilsandpapers fromthefloor,andconnectsomeof theChromebooksinthechargingcabinet.Iwasturningoutthelights,and toldhimhowmuchIappreciatedhim, andoutofthequiet,hecalmlyaskedif IknewJesusChristasmyLordand Savior.Itwasasifthelightshadbeen turnedonagain.Iwaspleasantlyhumbledandimpressed.Iwonderedhow many13-year-oldsarebeingdrivenby theirloveforGodandhavetheawarenessandfaithtosharethegospelwith theirsubstituteteacher?ItoldhimI wasaChristian,andwasproudand inspiredbyhisspiritualenthusiasm andcommitmenttotheLord.AsIwas walkingouttomycar,Ithoughtabout theteacherwhoearlierhadsharedher burdenfortheyoungones,andIknew shewouldbeencouragedtoknow therearestillgoodpeopleandwonderfulkidsinthemidstofthesetrying times.
