It is a profound joy to welcome you home to the Mecca. I trust that you will take full measure of this special time—reconnecting with classmates, revisiting cherished spaces, and participating in treasured traditions, including the Golden Reunion Luncheon and our 158th Commencement exercises on The Yard. We offer a special salute to the Class of 1976 as you commemorate your Golden Reunion. Your return stands as a powerful testament to the enduring bond between Howard and her alumni. We are equally honored to recognize the Classes of 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, and 1971. Each of your classes has helped to shape the trajectory of this University through lives marked by leadership, excellence, and an unwavering commitment to our enduring mission of Truth and Service. This year’s Commencement will be a moment of great pride as we celebrate the Class of 2026 and the conferral of more than 3,000 degrees. We are honored to welcome Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser as our Commencement Convocation speaker. In recognition of her distinguished record of public service and leadership, we will confer upon the degree of Doctor of Humanities. We will also bestow honorary degrees upon distinguished leaders whose work reflects excellence across disciplines. Dr. Antoine Garibaldi, Class of 1973, will receive the Doctor of Humane Letters; Robert Iger and Rosalind Brewer will each receive the Doctor of Laws; and the Reverend Richard Smallwood will be awarded, posthumously, the Doctor of Music. These honorees exemplify the breadth of impact and leadership that aligns with Howard’s values.
