In a city where resilience meets reinvention, a powerful new chapter is unfolding for one of Houston’s most trusted community anchors. Civic Heart Community Services—formerly known as Change Happens—has appointed Anita Bates as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking not just a leadership transition, but a deeply meaningful full-circle moment rooted in purpose, passion, and progress.
Founded in 1989, the same year Houston Style Magazine first began telling the stories that matter most, Civic Heart Community Services has long stood as a pillar of empowerment across Houston’s diverse communities. For decades, the organization has delivered life-changing programs—from workforce development and youth mentoring to housing stabilization, healthcare access, and re-entry services— ensuring that individuals and families are equipped not just to survive, but to thrive.
Now, with Anita Bates at the helm, Civic Heart is poised to elevate its legacy to new heights.
And for Bates, this journey is personal.
This is the very organization where her nonprofit career began—making her appointment not just symbolic, but profoundly inspiring. It’s a return fueled by experience, sharpened by success, and driven by a renewed commitment to the very communities that helped shape her leadership path.
With more than 25 years of executive leadership experience—including over a decade in the nonprofit sector—Bates brings a results-oriented mindset that blends strategy with heart. Known for building high-performing teams, securing transformative funding, and cultivating impactful partnerships, she has consistently delivered measurable outcomes. Her recent success— raising over $1.5 million in philanthropic support within just nine months—speaks volumes about her ability to mobilize resources and inspire confidence among stakeholders.
But numbers only tell part of the story.
Within just three weeks of stepping into her new role, Bates led Civic Heart’s 37th Annual Spring Luncheon—an event that brought together an influential cross-section of Houston’s civic leaders, corporate partners, and community champions. The energy in the room was unmistak-

able: a renewed sense of momentum, unity, and belief in what lies ahead.
“Civic Heart has a strong foundation, and we are building on that foundation with intention, accountability, and a deep commitment to the people we serve,” Bates shared—a statement that reflects both her leadership philosophy and her vision for the organization’s future.
That vision is clear: strengthen infrastructure, expand strategic partnerships, and ensure every program delivers measurable, life-changing impact.
Under Bates’ leadership, Civic Heart is doubling down on operational excellence while embracing innovation—an approach that aligns seamlessly with Houston’s forward-thinking spirit. Her ability to bridge corporate strategy with community needs positions the organization as not only a service provider, but a catalyst for longterm economic and social mobility.
For Houston’s families, youth, and underserved communities, this leadership shift signals opportunity.
For Civic Heart, it signals evolution.
And for Anita Bates, it represents destiny fulfilled.
At Houston Style Magazine, we recognize moments like these—where leadership meets legacy—as defining milestones in the story of our city. Because when organizations like Civic Heart rise, Houston rises with them.
With clarity, conviction, and an unwavering commitment to community, Anita Bates is not simply leading Civic Heart Community Services forward—she is ushering in a new era where purpose drives power, and impact becomes the ultimate measure of success.

Anita Bates – Civic Heart, Chief Executive Officer

Recently I drove from my father’s birthplace in Biddeford, Maine, to my mother’s birthplace in Petersburg, Virginia. Two different towns. Two different states. Two different regions. And yet, oddly, just different ends of the same sad street.
Most Americans now live at the same address: “We live where there used to be a factory. And when it shut down, what shot up was joblessness, hopelessness, meth, opioids, homicide and suicide.”
That is not just the story of one town. It is the story of a wounded nation. Factories were never just factories. They gave whole towns their rhythm. They filled lunch pails and church pews. They paid the mortgage. They kept the corner store open. They let a mother or father look a child in the eye and say, “You can make it here.” Then the factory closed. The people did not disappear.
They stayed. They stayed by the same schools, the same porches, the same churches, the same graves of the people who raised them. They stayed and watched storefronts empty, tax bases shrink and hope grow thin. Families are burying their tooyoung dead again and again. Meanwhile, the pundits who get rich dividing the nation keep working overtime.
The suffering caused by deindustrialization does not stop at racial lines, state lines or the old border between North and South. It reaches across most of the lines that people on television and social media work so hard to inflame. This one stokes racial resentment. That one blames immigrants. Another turns rural against urban, white against Black, native-born against newcomer. And most Americans suffer for it.
Divide and conquer has always been the surest way to blunt the ability of working families to rise together. It keeps
COMMENTARY MOST AMERICANS NOW LIVE AT THE SAME ADDRESS
our votes divided and canceling one another out.
Since NAFTA took effect in 1994, the United States has lost well over 65,000 manufacturing plants and factories. NAFTA was not the only reason. Automation mattered. China mattered. Corporate consolidation mattered. But NAFTA still stands as a warning bell in our history. It reminds us what happens when we confuse what is good for corporate profits with what is good for the country. Communities lose. The nation suffers.
Most Americans now live at the same address. They live in the places the economy left behind. They live where the factory closed, the jobs vanished and the pain stayed.
By Ben Jealous, National Political Commentator

But there is a road to a better day.
We became a great nation because we planned. We looked ahead. We decided what we needed to build, what we needed to make, what kind of work would support families and what kind of country we wanted to become. Then we trained our people, built our strength and did the work.
We need that spirit again.
We need an industrial plan county by county, state by state and for the nation as a whole. We need to know what jobs will be needed 10 and 20 years from now, where they should be and how we will prepare

our people to do them. Our schools are still too often preparing young people for an economy that is already gone. They need to do a better job preparing them for the jobs of the future. And as artificial intelligence starts doing more of the work people once thought would always need a person, we need to be ready to rethink the future for every worker and every community.
A nation is not a stock chart. A nation is not a quarterly report.
A nation is built on belief — belief in each other and belief in our future. And in America, we believe that if life has knocked you down, you deserve a chance to rise again.

Most Americans now live at the same address: “We live where there used to be a factory. And when it shut down, what shot up was joblessness, hopelessness, meth, opioids, homicide and suicide.”
The question is whether we will keep accepting that as normal. Or whether we will choose to love this country, our children and each other enough to make sure we all rise again.

Fort the fast-growing and ever-diverse landscape of Greater Houston, leadership in public education matters more than ever—and Cicely Taylor is stepping forward with a powerful, people-first vision for Katy ISD. As a professional educator, entrepreneur, proud mother of two Katy ISD graduates, and grandmother, Taylor is running in the Saturday, May 2, 2026 school board election with a clear mission: to bring responsible, responsive, and respectful leadership to one of Texas’ most influential school districts.
For Taylor, this campaign isn’t about politics—it’s personal.
More than 20 years ago, she and her late husband, Steve, chose Katy as their home because of its reputation for delivering high-quality education at an affordable cost. Like many families, they invested their hopes—and their children’s futures—into the promise of Katy ISD. But as the district has expanded to nearly 100,000 students and now manages a $1.5 billion budget, Taylor says she began to see a growing disconnect between community expectations and district leadership.
“I couldn’t sit on the sidelines anymore,” Taylor shares. “Our children, our families, and our taxpayers deserve leadership that listens, leads, and delivers results.”
From Chicago Roots to Katy Leadership
Taylor’s story is one of resilience,

global perspective, and unwavering belief in education. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, she learned early that education is the ultimate equalizer. Her academic journey took her from Colby College to the University of Texas, with formative experiences studying abroad in South Africa—moments that shaped her deep appreciation for access, equity, and excellence in public education.

Those values carried into her professional life, where she built and operated successful preschool businesses—giving her firsthand insight into both early childhood development and the operational demands of running educational institutions.
“I understand what it takes to build something that works—for families, for educators, and for communities,” she says. “And I know how to get things done.”
A District Reflecting a Changing America
Today’s Katy ISD tells a different story than it did two decades ago. Once a majority-white district, it has transformed into a richly diverse community—approximately
36% Hispanic, 17% Asian American, 15% African American, and 25% white. Taylor believes this diversity is one of the district’s greatest strengths—but only if leadership embraces it with intention and respect.
Her campaign is grounded in key priorities that resonate across communities: Elevating academic achievement for all students, Supporting and retaining high-quality teachers, Ensuring transparency and fiscal responsibility, Removing political distractions from classrooms and Strengthening relationships with parents and stakeholders
She describes her approach as “community-centered leadership with a results-driven mindset.”
Strength Through Service and Resilience
Taylor’s commitment to service runs deep. Her involvement in civic organizations, chambers of commerce, and local initiatives has built strong relationships throughout Katy’s expanding footprint across Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller counties. Her campaign is also shaped by

personal strength. Following the recent passing of her husband, Taylor says she is even more determined to continue their shared commitment to community progress.
“This is about legacy,” she says. “It’s about showing up, staying engaged, and doing the work that matters.”
If elected, Taylor would become the second African American and first minority woman to serve on the Katy ISD Board—an achievement that reflects both progress and the evolving face of the community.
Make Your Voice Count
Local school board elections may not always grab headlines, but their impact is profound. From classroom resources to curriculum decisions, these leaders shape the future of education—and the future of Houston.

At Houston Style Magazine, we don’t just report the news—we celebrate the moments that define generations. And in Houston, those moments are getting bigger, bolder, and undeniably historic thanks to the Houston Rockets and the brilliance of Kevin Durant.
On a night that electrified H-Town, Durant officially passed the legendary Michael Jordan to claim fifth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, finishing with 27 points in a commanding Houston win over the Miami Heat. But if you expected a victory lap, think again.
With trademark calm and quiet confidence, Durant simply smiled and said, “Four more to go.”
And just like that, Houston became ground zero for the next chapter of basketball immortality.

For decades, Houston Style Magazine has chronicled the triumphs, transformations, and trailblazers shaping Houston’s legacy. From championship runs to cultural breakthroughs, we’ve been there—and this moment is no different.

More Than Numbers A Cultural Benchmark Let’s be clear—passing Michael

Jordan is not just about points. It’s about legacy.
Jordan’s 32,292 career points were built on excellence, dominance, and a mystique that transcended sports. His influence reshaped basketball and global culture, making him a figure larger than the game itself.
Durant understands that.
Rather than diminish the moment, he honored it—acknowledging that Jordan’s
impact remains unmatched even as records evolve. What Durant represents is a new dimension of greatness: longevity fused with elite performance.
Houston: Where Greatness Lives and Evolves
For the Houston Rockets and their fans, this milestone is more than a stat—it’s a shared experience.
Houston has always been a city that embraces excellence, and Durant’s presence amplifies that identity. Every game now carries the weight of possibility, every shot a step closer to even greater history.
At Houston Style Magazine, we recognize what this means for our city:
Houston isn’t just witnessing greatness—it’s hosting it.

Few names in the history of music resonate with the spiritual intensity, artistic brilliance, and cultural impact of John Coltrane. In 2026, as the world commemorates the 100th anniversary of his birth, Houston stands proudly at the center of this global tribute with an unforgettable evening of jazz mastery.
On Friday, April 10, 2026, at 8:00 PM CT, the renowned arts presenter DACAMERA brings Coltrane 100 to the elegant Cullen Theater at the Wortham Theater Center—an electrifying performance honoring a man whose music continues to transcend time, genre, and generation.
This is not merely a concert—it’s a cultural moment.
A Legacy Reimagined for a New Century Coltrane’s music was never about staying still. It was about movement— forward, upward, inward. His philosophy of “both directions at once,” as he once described to Wayne Shorter, challenged musicians to explore sound as both structure and spirit.
That ethos lives on through an extraordinary, all-star ensemble assembled for this centennial tribute:
• Joe Lovano, a titan of modern jazz whose career spans decades of innovation
• Melissa Aldana, a bold contemporary voice redefining jazz storytelling

• Linda May Han Oh, a globally celebrated bassist and composer
Jeff “Tain” Watts, a rhythmic powerhouse with legendary collaborations Together, these artists are not simply revisiting Coltrane—they are reinterpreting him.
Expect a dynamic fusion of beloved classics and original compositions inspired by his boundless influence.
As Lovano himself puts it: “We do not seek to recreate, but rather to create in the spirit of Coltrane.”
Houston’s Place in the Global Jazz Conversation
For Houston—already a city rich in cultural diversity and artistic excellence— Coltrane 100 is yet another shining example of why the city continues to lead as a destination for world-class arts programming.
DACAMERA, under the vision-
ary leadership of Artistic Director Sarah Rothenberg, has built a national reputation for curating experiences that are as intellectually engaging as they are emotionally stirring. From commissioning groundbreaking works to presenting globally acclaimed performances, DACAMERA continues to elevate Houston’s artistic footprint on the world stage.
This event also reflects a deeper truth: jazz is alive, evolving, and thriving—especially in cities like Houston that embrace both tradition and innovation.
Why This Night Matters
Coltrane’s music has always been more than sound—it’s been a language of liberation, faith, and exploration. In today’s world, where connection and creativity are more vital than ever, revisiting his work feels not only timely, but necessary.
Coltrane 100 invites audiences to experience that legacy in real time—

At a time when meaningful dialogue is more essential than ever, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) Houston is stepping boldly into its next chapter—celebrating 80 years of impact with a powerful, forward-looking event designed to unite, educate, and inspire.
Set for Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 6:30 PM CT, the AJC Houston 2026 Annual Fundraiser is more than a celebration— it’s a call to action. In a city as globally diverse as Houston, this milestone gathering reflects the values that have defined AJC Houston for decades: advocacy, interfaith collaboration, and unwavering commitment to combating hate and extremism.
Taking center stage is Emmanuel Acho, the Emmy Award–winning thought leader whose groundbreaking series “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man” redefined how America engages in discussions about race and identity. With more than 80 million views worldwide, Acho’s work continues to resonate across cultures, making him a timely and compelling voice for this moment.
In Houston, Acho will expand the conversation with insights from his bestselling book, “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Jew,” co-authored with Noa Tishby. The work offers a clear-eyed look at antisemitism—bridging history with today’s realities—while encouraging audiences

to lean into difficult conversations with courage and compassion. It’s a message that aligns seamlessly with AJC Houston’s mission and Houston Style Magazine’s commitment to elevating stories that matter.
Adding depth and perspective to the evening are two of Houston’s most respected faith leaders: Imam Abdullah Antepli, President of the iconic Rothko Chapel, and Rabbi Brian Strauss of Congregation Beth Yeshurun. Together, this trio represents a powerful cross-section of voices dedicated to building bridges, fostering respect, and strengthening community bonds.
The event will also honor 38 past

presidents of AJC Houston, whose leadership has helped shape one of the region’s most impactful advocacy organizations. Their legacy is woven into Houston’s civic fabric—one defined by resilience, inclusion, and progress.
“Bringing people together across lines of difference isn’t just important—it’s essential,” shared Rachel Schneider, Regional Director of AJC Houston. Her words underscore the urgency of this moment, as communities nationwide seek solutions rooted in understanding rather than division.
Funds raised from the evening will directly support AJC Houston’s expanding
initiatives focused on combating antisemitism, countering extremism, and advancing interfaith education. These programs are increasingly vital as Houston continues to grow into one of America’s most culturally dynamic cities.

On a brisk March morning, Houston’s housing story unfolded not in a boardroom—but on a moving bus. Led by the visionary team at the Houston Community Land Trust (HCLT), community leaders, media voices, and advocates embarked on a powerful, eye-opening tour through the city’s most dynamic—and vulnerable—neighborhoods.
From the historic streets of Third Ward to the evolving landscapes of Wayside Village, Acres Homes, and Freedmen’s Town, one message echoed loud and clear: Houston’s future depends on who gets to stay.
A New Model for a Growing City
Founded in 2018, HCLT is redefining what affordable housing looks like in one of America’s fastest-growing cities. Their approach is both simple and revolutionary—keep land in community control to ensure homes remain affordable forever, not just temporarily.
Executive Director Dr. Ashley Allen summed it up best: preserving “place, space, and price” isn’t just policy—it’s purpose.
And the numbers speak volumes. With more than 200 homeowners already

supported, and millions in philanthropic backing—including a transformative $5 million gift from MacKenzie Scott— HCLT is proving that affordability and dignity can coexist.
The Reality on the Ground
As the bus rolled through Third Ward, the contrast was striking. Sleek, half-million-dollar townhomes towered beside aging properties and modest rentals. Progress? Yes. But at what cost?
Rising property values are pushing out longtime residents—especially seniors and working-class families—many of whom have deep roots in these communities. Even maintaining a home can feel risky, as improvements often trigger higher taxes.
HCLT’s solution? Stabilize costs by sepa-

ensuring residents are taxed only on what they can truly afford.
Seeing the Model in Action
At Wayside Village, the concept came to life. A beautiful, mixed-income neighborhood where you couldn’t distinguish affordable homes from market-rate ones— that’s exactly the point.
No stigma. No segregation. Just community.
In Acres Homes, attendees met Ms. Mitchell, a proud homeowner whose journey embodied resilience and faith. Once told she could never afford a home, she now stands as living proof that access changes everything.
Her story wasn’t just inspiring—it was instructive. Financial education, budgeting workshops, and ongoing support are

all part of HCLT’s “stewardship” model, ensuring homeowners don’t just buy homes—they keep them.
The Stakes in Freedmen’s Town
The tour’s final stop, Freedmen’s Town, delivered a sobering reality. Once a cornerstone of Black history in Houston, the neighborhood is rapidly transforming. Entire blocks are being cleared. New development is rising. And with it, the risk of cultural erasure.
For residents like Andrew Cosma, HCLT offered a rare chance to remain in a community he loves—one that’s becoming increasingly out of reach for many.
More Than Housing—It’s a Movement
This isn’t just about real estate. It’s about equity, access, and the right to belong. Houston’s affordability crisis isn’t limited to one group—it affects students, seniors, teachers, service workers, and families alike. And while development is inevitable, displacement doesn’t have to be.
