Supporting pet adoption through Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) Houston saves lives and strengthens our community. By fostering and adopting, we reduce shelter overcrowding and promote responsible pet ownership. I’m proud to stand with CAP in giving animals the chance they deserve.

As the holiday season approaches, let’s work together supporting CAP and make a difference by adopting a precious animal or simply by making a donation with the QR code below.

Letter from the Editor ON THE COVER

I'm A Star So We Play By My Rules!

Cover contest winner, Maximus, definitely had his own idea of what he would and would not do for our cover shot! His mom, Candice, and PetTalk Co-Publisher, Tonia, tried every "trick" in the book and used plenty of treats. After knocking over the pumpkin props, flowers and stumbling over the straw bales, we finally got the shot! Of course, there was plenty of laughter to go along with his antics. Maximus won our coveted cover contest but it was IMPOSSIBLE to choose just one pup. See the other adorable entries in our feature story. Cover Photo: Allison Wilkins Photography

Welcome to an unusual issue of PetTalk–a cover contest winner. Why is it unusual? We have only had one other cover contest in our 25 year history and the reason is because it is impossible to select a winner from the many outrageously cute entries! Thankfully, I did not have to make the tough decision, as that difficult task fell to the contest sponsors, Peace Love Dogs and VERGI 24/7 Emergency and Critical Care Hospital. In our feature, you will meet Maximus, the winner and the proud star of this month’s cover, plus the finalists, editor's picks and tons of creative and cute entries (including a horse and a pig!).

As the winner, Maximus won a professional photoshoot with Allison Wilkins Photography. He certainly had his own ideas about how the photoshoot would go down, including sniffing up the entire studio, drinking untold bowls of water, and knocking over every single prop on set—but in the end, Allison worked her magic and captured the perfect shot after lots of laughter. Be sure to check out his winning photo submission from his mom Candice, plus our behind-the-scenes video of Max's hilarity on our Instagram page.

As 2025 marks 25 years of Houston PetTalk Magazine, we wanted to commemorate this milestone by hosting a series of fun contests throughout the year. The Cover Contest was a highlight, and in this issue, we also unveil the winner of our 25 Reasons My Pet Is Adorable essay contest, sponsored by Wright Pawn & Jewelry. In honor of their 33+ years serving Houston, the winning entry, Reggie, received $333 in cash!

Well, Reggie didn't actually get the cash, his mom did but I'm sure she used some of it to buy him some pawesome treats. Check out Reggie's entry plus the finalists that were heartfelt and creative, on pages 40-43.

This month’s issue is packed with more than just contest winners. Don’t miss our Annual Holiday Gift Guide, filled with unique, useful, and crafty gift ideas for pets and their people. Many items come from our sponsors, and we encourage you to shop local and support them—not only do they help make PetTalk possible, but they also support animal welfare causes across Houston.

Looking for festive fun? Check out our roundup of upcoming holiday events, and mark your calendars for our 12 Days of Petmas Contest kicking off December 1, sponsored by the wonderful team at VERGI 24/7 who recently moved just a block away to 8800 Katy Freeway. Stop by and check out their new "digs" because it is a beautiful new facility offering state-of-the-art medical care.

Finally, if you want to stay in-the-know about pet events, local news, contests, and sponsor highlights, be sure to sign up for our monthly newsletter on our website. We also encourage you to engage with us on our Instagram page and don't forget to take a copy of PetTalk with you when traveling so you can be featured in Where In The World Is PetTalk.

As we enter the month of gratitude and giving thanks, I want to thank all of you for your continued support of PetTalk and allowing us into your hearts each month with all things pet in Houston!

5-Star Experience, Love & Fun Included!

1. The fact that Penelope will once again be made to wear a ridiculous costume for her family holiday photos. She hates it, so I love it. I hope this year her mom makes her wear reindeer antlers…it’s so cliché which is her worst nightmare.

2. Fur…it hides a lot that we dogs don’t want to share.

3. Whales...because they are just simply awesome.

4. Taco Bell’s $1 cravings menu. Yes, miss perfect DL sneaks a drivethrough for junk food on occasion and of course she spills, I eat. Yum!

5. Fortune cookies that predict how my stunning mind will change the world.

6. Cat videos with cats missing their jump and busting their kitty bums.

7. Everyone who adopted a pet from a shelter or rescue and also didn’t take it back but found a way to love him or her and make it work.

8. That mom got two ding-dongs, sorry, I mean llamas. She has to spend so much time taking care of them that she forgets to yell at me for one of many things I was supposed to do but didn’t.

9. Slow squirrels.

10. My new plush bed from PUCCI Cafe: My Bed + Cheetos = Heaven.

11. Furriends.

12. And as always…that I’m not a Turkey!

Barktoberfest Unleashed

Howl-o-ween came early at Barktoberfest 2025! On Saturday, October 11, The Powder Keg in Houston transformed into a pup-tacular playground for Houston Pets Alive!’s annual fundraiser.

Dog costumes ran the gamut from spooky to hilarious, with proud pet parents strutting their four-legged darlings down a “paw-rade” runway. Between costume judging, pumpkin decorating, a stein-holding contest, mechanical

bull rides, and the always thrilling beer pours in commemorative glasses (first pour included!)—the energy was buzzing. Vendors lined up with treats, artisan goods, and fall décor. Meanwhile, the adoption area stole hearts as attendees mingled with pups hoping to find forever homes. The event supports HPA!’s mission to rescue at-risk pets.

All in all? A howlin’ good time. Can’t wait for next year’s wagging tails and cold brews.

FURRY FRIENDS, FESTIVE FUN

15th Annual Mutts, Meows & Margaritas Unleashed

The 15th Annual Mutts, Meows & Margaritas was a tail-waggin’, whisker-twitchin’ good time! Held on October 4 at the always festive Cadillac Bar, this festive event once again proved to be a paws-itively fabulous fundraiser for Friends of BARC.

Guests sipped on two complimentary margaritas, munched their way through a flavor-packed Mexican buffet and got into the

spirit of giving with the live and silent auctions featuring some seriously drool-worthy items. No MMM event would be complete without the legendary tables of free stuffed animals, and this year they were as irresistible as ever.

Thanks to all that supported Friends of BARC’s mission and made the event successful. To learn more about Friends of BARC, or to donate or volunteer, visit FriendsofBARC.org.

A THANK-YOU THAT HEALS

Honoring Our Heroes With The Love Of A Pet News

This Veterans Day, we’re saying thank you in the best way we know how, with wagging tails, purrs, and unconditional love. All month long, Houston Humane Society is offering free pet adoptions for active, retired, and former military personnel in honor of Veterans Day.

We know the incredible sacrifices our service members make every day, the courage, commitment, and compassion it takes to protect and serve our country. Now, we want to give back by helping them find a loyal companion to stand proudly by their side.

Whether it’s a playful kitten ready to curl up after a long day or a gentle senior dog who’s been waiting patiently for a

forever home, there’s a perfect match waiting for every hero.

Studies have shown that pets can provide comfort, reduce stress, and bring joy something every veteran deserves.

To adopt, simply bring a valid military ID or proof of service to the shelter. Our team will help you meet adoptable pets, introduce you to their personalities, and guide you through the process completely free of charge.

Every adoption not only transforms the life of a shelter pet but also creates a lasting bond that reminds us of the healing power of love and companionship.

So, if you’ve ever thought about adding a furry friend to your life, there’s no better time. Visit the Houston Humane Society this month and let a grateful pet thank

Neiman Marcus Adopts The Houston SPCA

The 37th annual Homes for the Holidays Pet Adoption event, hosted by Neiman Marcus and the Houston SPCA, will feature adoptable puppies and kittens in the luxury retail brand’s magical storefront windows beginning the day after Thanksgiving and on various dates through Sunday, December 21.  Shoppers will once again enjoy the thrill of viewing adoptable pets as the little felines and canines frolic inside the notable Neiman Marcus holiday windows as one of the city’s most cherished holiday traditions.  Neiman Marcus’ newly designed holiday storefront windows will not only include

adoptable puppies and kittens, but small dogs will also be walked around for meet-and-greets with shoppers and potential adopters.  Please visit HoustonSPCA. org for the adoption days at Neiman Marcus.

Are You Ready for a Forever Friend?

Here are just a few things to consider before making a commitment that can last 10 to 15 years, or more.

❖ Adoption is always a great option!

❖ Are there any pet restrictions where you live, such as an apartment or condominium?

❖ What size or type of pet are you considering?

❖ Do you travel frequently or spend most of your day away?

❖ Consider monthly expense such as dog food, grooming, and heartworm prevention, or yearly expenses such as shots,

veterinary exams, illnesses, or medical emergencies.

❖ Do you have the time or energy for daily or long walks?

❖ Are you ready to support your new family member as a longterm commitment?

Each pet comes with an adoption package including the pet’s microchip, spay/neuter surgery, up-to-date vaccinations, a free sample-sized bag of Hill’s Science Diet dog or cat food and a 14-day, post-adoption visit at any VCA Animal Hospital. While the pets available at Neiman Marcus may vary, all pets at the Houston SPCA can be found online at HoustonSPCA.org.

FINDING THEIR WAY HOME STARTS WITH YOU

Register Your Pet: A Message From Houston’s City Shelter, BARC

Houston loves its pets. For so many of us, our dogs and cats aren’t just animals, they’re family. They’re our morning walking partners, our evening couch companions, and the ones who greet us at the end of a long workday with unconditional joy. But what happens if they slip out the door, dash through an open gate, or get spooked during a storm? In a city the size of Houston, the odds of them finding their way home safely can be slim. That is, unless they’re registered.

BARC, Houston’s municipal animal shelter and adoption center, sees firsthand what happens when pets are lost without identification. Every year, tens of thousands of stray animals arrive

at our doors, many without a microchip, tag, or any way to be traced back to the families who love them. It doesn’t have to be this way.

That’s why Houston requires all pets to be registered. Registration starts with a rabies vaccination, includes a microchip, and ends with a city pet license. It’s a simple three-step process that provides a lifetime of protection. If your pet is ever lost, that microchip and registration act like a safety net—instantly connecting them back to you and keeping them out of crowded shelter kennels like the ones at BARC.

We know PetTalk readers already go above and beyond for their pets. You buy the good

treats, you schedule regular vet visits, and you treat them like family. Registration is simply the next step in being a responsible pet owner. And yet, since the pandemic, registration numbers have steadily dropped across Houston. Fewer pets registered means more strays entering our neighborhoods, more kennels filled at BARC, and fewer happy reunions.

This is where we need you. When you register your pet, you’re not just protecting your own dog or cat—you’re helping to reduce the stray animal crisis across Houston. You’re showing your neighbors, your kids, and your community what responsible pet ownership looks like. And you’re making sure that if your

four-legged family member ever wanders, they’ll get the best chance possible to come home.

Getting registered is easy, affordable, and available through BARC or participating veterinary partners across the city. Don’t wait until it’s too late or assume it won’t happen to your pet. Accidents happen in seconds, but registration lasts a lifetime.

Houston’s pets deserve safe homes, and every pet owner has a role to play. If your furry family member isn’t registered yet, now’s the time. Take action today—and help every lost pet find their way home.

Learn more and start the process at HoustonBARC.com/ Way_Home.

The 7 Weeks of the Muttcracker is a festive, dog-friendly fundraiser happening every Sunday in November and continuing through December 21, hosted by Furrever Doggies, Houston’s goto source for custom, handmade pet accessories and clothing. Each Sunday, pet lovers are invited to bring their pups for a fun-filled day of holiday cheer, professional pet photography, and community celebration. On select Sundays, guests can even snap memorable photos with special holiday characters like Santa and The Grinch. Local vendors

In addition to shopping and photo ops, guests can enjoy delicious food and beverages while mingling with fellow dog enthusiasts and meeting adorable, adoptable dogs. The featured rescue for the event is Three Little Pitties, and proceeds will go toward supporting their mission to find loving homes for dogs in need.

THLN’s 50th Anniversary Celebration

The Texas Humane Legislation Network (THLN), is a nonprofit that was formed in 1975 by a group of dedicated individuals whose goal was to make the humane treatment of animals the law. Through legislative advocacy, THLN has worked to pass humane animal welfare laws that protect companion, working, wildlife and exotic animals across the state of Texas from abuse, cruelty, and neglect for 50 years.

One of our very first legislative victories outlawed dog fighting in 1983. Some of our most recent laws include the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act (2021) and banning

the roadside sales of animals in large counties, including Harris County, in 2025. We have truly hit a golden milestone: 50 years of the Texas Humane Legislation Network!

We are beyond thrilled to announce that the legendary Paula Abdul will be joining us for our Boots, Bling & Paws Celebration as a guest speaker. Paula is sure to light up this memorable night with her stories of her animal advocacy.

With over 100 entries from proud pet parents across Houston (including dogs, cats, a horse, and even a pig!), selecting just one star for the spotlight was nearly impossible.

Thanks to our generous sponsors, VERGI 24/7 Emergency & Critical Care and Peace Love Dogs, one lucky pet earned the ultimate honor: gracing the Houston PetTalk cover. After much deliberation, the title of Cover Star goes to Maximus, whose

charm, personality, and star power leapt right off the page! Maximus enjoyed a professional photoshoot with Allison Wilkins Photography. Max’s mom, Candice, was on hand with plenty of treats to “bribe” him… and let’s just say it took a lot of them but we had tons of laughs!

Inside this issue, you'll find the fabulous finalists, editor’s picks, and even more irresistible entries that made our hearts melt. Thank you to every pet parent who shared their beloved companions with us—your submissions truly reflect the love and joy our animals bring into our lives every day. Stay tuned for more contests, and maybe your pet will be in a future issue of PetTalk!

Winning EntryMaximus

To help celebrate our 25th Anniversary, our friends at Peace Love Dogs and VERGI 24/7 sponsored our very special 2025 Cover Contest! It’s only the second time in PetTalk’s long history that we’ve held a cover contest, and the entries poured in from all over Houston. It turned out to be our biggest contest yet, a perfect way to mark this milestone year. Choosing just one cover model was no easy task. As you will see, there were so many amazing photos and it caused a lively deliberation with our judges, but without further ado, meet Maximus, a 5 yr. old Great Pyrenees, our 2025 Capture the

Cuteness Cover Winner!

To get to know Maximus, we sat down for a Q&A with his mom, Candice.

Q: Maximus clearly knows how to work the camera, what’s his secret to striking the perfect pose?

A: Snacks, especially if they are pumpkin flavored. He doesn’t model for free!

Q: If Maximus had a theme song or celebrity alter ego, who would it be and why?

A: If Maximus had a theme song it would be “Never Gonna Let You Down” by Colbie Caillat, because he is always loyal, and comforting. His celebrity alter ego would be

Glen Powell because he is sweet, funny and doesn’t let his good looks go to his head.

Q: What’s one thing Maximus does that never fails to make you laugh?

A: When he begs for a snack by sticking the tip of his tongue out and whisper whines.

Q: If Maximus could plan the perfect day in Houston, what would it include—from morning walk to bedtime snack?

If he could plan the perfect day in Houston, he would put on one of his favorite bandanas and hit the coffee shop for a pup cup with his best friend Nerys. Then, he’d go for a walk in the park followed by a trip to grandma‘s house to float in the pool then dry off by rolling in the grass with his cousin Haisley. He would wind down with a little bit of DOGTV after dinner with a cookie for dessert from the Doggie Express. After washing it down with goat milk from Phinney Farms, he would curl up on a soft blanket in the bed.

Q: Winning the cover is a big deal! How did Maximus react when you found out he was the top dog?

A: Funny enough, Maximus and I were shopping at HomeGoods when we found out. I cheered loud enough that some of the workers came around the corner to check on us. Maximus was looking at me very confused, trying to determine if I was okay. After realizing we had gotten good news, we were over the moon excited. We have enjoyed getting our PetTalk magazines for years. His first picture in the magazine was when he was just a few weeks old. We feel so honored to now have his picture on the cover! The hardest part has been keeping the surprise from family and friends!

Candy Finalists

Atlas

Oh, Atlas the chihuahua,

You really are the spiciest breed, no doubt about it!

Here are just a few reasons why I love you.

When you dance on your tiny toes,

Those sweet kisses you give, and how you’re okay with wearing clothes.

I can't help but laugh when you try to sneak a few extra treats,

And the way you look back at me when I scratch your back, oh so sweet.

You look so cute all curled up tight in bed,

Dreaming doggie dreams with your sleepy little head.

Those tiny paws and that adorable nose,

And the expressions you give when you strike a pose.

I love the sound of your nails tapping on our floor,

And how you bark at the front door.

25 Things to Say About Candy, Our Remarkable Dog: Candy Cane came to us through Golden Beginnings Rescue.

Before her rescue, she lived as a breeding mill momma, confined to a kennel.

She was once scared, withdrawn, and had almost given up on trusting humans.

Trudie, our other rescued mill momma, took her under her wing and helped her heal.

With time, Candy blossomed into a confident, joyful soul.

She is one of the sweetest, most loving dogs we've ever known. Candy became a trained service dog, performing life-saving diabetes alerts for 6 years.

Inspired by Trudie, who was a therapy dog, Candy pursued that path too.

She earned her therapy certification and gave back in incredible ways. Candy completed over 200 visits to hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and community events.

With your white-tipped ears and that wagging tail,

You run so slowly, almost like a snail.

Your sit, your stay, your high five too,

There are just so many tricks that you do!

You spin, you dance, you even prance,

And I love it when you strike a big stance.

You can be pretty bossy, and I find it cute,

But let’s just say we sometimes need to evacuate the house when you let out a toot!

I cherish those moments you run to me when I get home,

And those after-work walks when we can just roam.

The way excitement makes you wiggle,

You always know how to make me giggle.

I love your compact size, The best little companion right before my eyes.

She spread love, comfort, and companionship wherever she went. Her joy and gentle kisses brought peace to everyone she met. Candy has a special love for children and connects with them naturally.

She “adopted” and cared for 5 other rescue dogs during her time with us.

Skye, Birdy, Finley, and Honey all flourished under her gentle leadership.

She has a gift for transforming scared, shy rescues into happy, confident Goldens.

Candy is a teacher and mentor to other dogs.

Even after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, she continues to nurture and care for others.

She’s an incredible example of strength, resilience, and unconditional love.

Candy lives every day with kindness and grace.

She is patient and calm, even through her own pain.

She’s a protector and caregiver to those around her—human and canine alike.

She leads with love and a gentle spirit.

Candy is our sunshine—always bringing warmth into our lives.

Though her days may be limited, her legacy of love will live on forever.

Lily pad, you are so rad // I can't believe that I'm your dad // but since I am, let's have some fun // lets see the world, the stars, the sun // turns out there's so much we can do // and it seems more worth it since I found you // oh lily pad, thanks for being my friend // I'll love you so, until the end.

I ask you who's a pretty girl // you've got so much love to give the world // before we met, I was just some dude // but now I'm the guy who usually gives you food // but whats funny youve shown me I'm more than that // with something simple like lying in my lap // oh lily pad, thanks for being my friend // I'll love you so, until the end.

Lucky

Deep, soulful eyes

A friendly face

Little crooked teefers

Not one little red curl out of place

His heart the size of Texas

Who gives the best cuddles and snuggles and so much more

But also a fierce protector

With his little lion poof tail, his bark sounds like a roar

He has clothes, costumes, and accessories galore

The cutest minion, pirate, chick-fil-A cow, dragon, football fan, and more

He is the most handsome boy

With a most winning smile which fills me with joy

Sometimes chill

Sometimes crazy

From playful pup

Sometimes we get lost, and we scared // but while we've got each other we're always a pair // we'll navigate any tricky road // and may every challenge wield treats and bones // and lily pad, thanks for being my friend // I'll love you so, until the end.

(bridge) I think about how the day before we met there was an awful storm // we lost homes, and cars, and so much more // and there amongst the fallen trees // a baby pup crying out to me.....

I think we all know those days when we're feeling strife// and lily pad, I think you saved my life // I don't say that lightly, i mean that true // Ever since the day that I found you // oh lily pad, thanks for being my friend // I'll love you so, until the end.

Shining a Light on Pet Cancer Awareness Month

Early Detection Saves Lives

November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month. While no one wants to imagine their furry friend facing cancer, awareness is a powerful tool. It helps us catch problems earlier, make informed choices, and support research that leads to better treatments.

How common is cancer in pets?

Sadly, cancer is one of the leading causes of death in dogs and cats. About 1 in 4 dogs will develop cancer at some point in their lives, and the risk increases with age. Cats can also be affected (about 1 in 5 cats will develop cancer), though their cancers often show up differently and can be harder to detect. The good news is that advances in veterinary medicine mean many pets

are living longer, healthier lives even after a cancer diagnosis.

What signs should you watch for?

Because our pets can’t tell us when something feels wrong, it’s important to stay alert to even small changes. Call your veterinarian if you notice:

❖ Lumps or bumps that grow or change

❖ Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite

❖ Persistent lameness or stiffness

❖ Changes in bathroom habits

❖ Wounds that don’t heal

❖ Sudden changes in energy or behavior

Not every lump or symptom is cancer, but catching any issue early gives your pet the best chance at treatment and comfort.

What can pet parents do?

Routine veterinary checkups are one of the most powerful tools for early detection. Regular exams allow your veterinarian to look for subtle changes that you might not notice at home, as well as conduct bloodwork and other diagnostics as needed. Preventive care, such as keeping pets at a healthy weight, feeding balanced diets, and minimizing exposure to secondhand smoke or harmful chemicals, also plays a role in lowering risk.

Treatment options are growing.

Years ago, a cancer diagnosis for a pet often meant very limited choices. Today, veterinary oncology offers a range of treatments,

from surgery and chemotherapy to radiation therapy and newer targeted approaches. Every pet is different, and treatment decisions are made with both quality of life and family circumstances in mind.

Awareness builds hope

Pet Cancer Awareness Month is also about supporting ongoing research. Studies are helping veterinarians understand which cancers are most common in certain breeds, which treatments are most effective, and how we can improve comfort and longevity for pets with cancer. By spreading awareness, we are also collectively helping direct funding and attention toward these efforts.

Bottom line: Cancer is a heavy word, but awareness lightens the load. By knowing what to watch for, keeping up with vet visits, and supporting research, pet parents can make a real difference. This November, take a moment to check your pet, schedule that wellness exam, and share awareness with a friend.

Your best friend’s health is our top priority. 24/7 - when animal emergencies happen, we are here for you both.

“Wait! Don’t eat that!” Zero’s Journey of Survival

“Don’t bring your work home with you” is one of those sayings in life that transfers easily into veterinary medicine. Everyone in the field knows veterinary and support staff that have ended up taking home a surprise pet in need. Zero came into my life as one of those exceptional pets.

In 2014, I was working as an overnight emergency technician. Zero was brought in by his owner in bad shape. It was unclear if he had been hit by a car or attacked by an animal, or both. After getting verbal approval for stabilization, I brought him back, got vitals, and started prepping for an intravenous catheter. He was such a good boy and was even trying to give kisses during his treatments. As we were in the process of getting him pain medication, the owner went to his car to retrieve his wallet, and in fact, left. Long story short, the previous owner never returned or answered back. I accepted financial responsibility for the little guy, and he has kept my family and I on our toes ever since.

It took a few weeks of healing before Zero’s true personality came out, and boy was it a doozie! We thought this puppy to be about a year old, but it turns out he was more likely three or four years old upon further examination. And boy, he had so much energy and love to give—it was incredible! Even our grumpy Pit Bull, Rainbow Dash, loved him, and she didn’t really like any animals even existing near her at the time. Zero’s sweet temperament led to softening Rainbow Dash up and truly made her a happier dog by having a partner in crime. They were particularly good at rummaging in trash cans….locked trash cans.

Within a year, Zero had his first

foreign body. He had eaten my daughter’s bathroom trash and now had an obstruction in his intestines. That resulted in surgery. About a year after that, he ate the arm of his stuffed T. Rex. Luckily, that one was able to be removed via endoscopy rather than full abdominal surgery. He got into a few smaller things over the years, mostly food and plastic. Most of this passed through with only supportive care, but this little guy has ended up with a nasogastric tube more times than I can keep track of. With all the procedures, and less left of his intestines than when he started, it didn’t take much for him to randomly regurgitate after eating.

Then Zero ate something I would’ve never guessed, and it sort of changed everything. He had regurgitated a few times, so I took him in to work with me to be seen by one of our many veterinarians at BluePearl who had already saved his life countless times in the past. We took some radiographs of his abdomen, and surprisingly, it resembled cat litter. Weird, I don’t have cats. However, if there were a dog in all the land who could find cat litter in a house without cats, it would be him. Zero got a little worse, and ended up with his 8th hospitalization on record, and my husband called with the answer to the puzzle. Zero had in fact eaten little pieces of cement that were breaking away from a slab of concrete covering a sink hole in the backyard. Luckily, our doctors knew what to do, and he eventually made it through that scare.

Once Zero was home again, he still wasn’t quite himself and seemed to be having tummy upset off and on for a couple of weeks. I thought, “Is this permanent damage from the cement? Had his gastrointestinal tract finally said, ‘All done here!’?”

Fortunately, our Internal Medicine team took some biopsies to see if Zero may have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) versus a less likely gastrointestinal lymphoma. Lo and behold, he was having a flare of irritable bowel syndrome. So, that’s great to know, but now what? How do you stay on top of a dog that eats everything in sight, but also needs a vegetarian diet?

(the compulsive consumption of food and non-food items). It didn’t seem to make a difference for the first couple of weeks, but then… magic happened!

Zero has traded his compulsive eating for licking the floor at a constant rate for a solid hour each day. I’ll take it! Zero has been receiving gastrointestinal medications, steroids, vegetarian food, and fluoxetine for a year

It turns out that Zero LOVES the vegetarian diet! But he also LOVES plastic, and anything else he can find in the yard. Does he live with a basket muzzle now? I can just picture his poor little face in “the mouth prison” for life. I don’t think that would be a happy existence for him. So, I asked some of our awesome doctors, and a couple of them agreed that it would be worth trying fluoxetine (Prozac). The hope was that with this anti-anxiety medication we could curb his pica tendencies

now, and he is the happiest and healthiest he’s ever been! From getting beat up in his former life, to all the medical stuff, and his latest corneal ulcer from running into the thorny brush with his eyes wide open, Zero continues to bring joy to everyone he meets and just wants to give and receive all the love. What more could you ask for in a pet?

Thanks to all the many Specialists who contributed to Zero’s survival!

Boat-Billed Heron Chick Hatches at the Houston Zoo

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight the boatbilled heron. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

For the first time in Houston Zoo history, a boat-billed heron has hatched. Born on Aug. 23, the

fuzzy little bird is the newest member of South America’s Wetlands aviary in the new Birds of the World exhibit. While the

chick spends most of its time under mom it is becoming more active and vocal. Boat-billed herons are named after the shape of their wide, flat bills that resemble a boat. They use their big bills to scoop fish, shrimp and insects out of the water.

Unlike most herons, boat-billed herons are known to be nocturnal. They hunt quietly at night and spend their days roosting in trees, often in small groups. They often hunt right after rainstorms, when the water has been stirred up and brings small fish and shrimp to the surface. These birds use stealth rather than speed. Instead of chasing prey, boat-billed herons stand perfectly still waiting for unsuspecting fish or insects to swim close enough to a fast grab. Their large and dark eyes help them in their night-time hunts

Photos provided by Houston Zoo
The Houston Zoo

and can even use touch to find prey in murky waters. Their wide bill is lined with sensitive nerve endings, helping the bird detect vibrations in murky water. They have also been known to use downy feathers to create a powder to waterproof their own feathers. When active they make a range of

odd croaks, growls and squawks that have been compared to a frog or a purr from a cat.

While young boat-billed herons sport fluffy white down that sticks up they eventually transition into adults with an elegant gray plumage. The boat-billed heron’s lineage is ancient. They

are considered a distant relative of typical herons which is why they look and act so different. Because they’re nocturnal and love dense mangroves, spotting one in the wild is rare. Boat-billed herons are native to the forests and wetlands of Central and South America—ecosystems that are

vital for countless species but increasingly at risk.

By visiting the new chick at the Houston Zoo, guests are helping to protect this species. A portion of each ticket and membership supports the Zoo’s efforts in helping protect these habitats and the wildlife that depend on them.

Sea lions have many adaptations that help them thrive in the water. They have a thick layer of fat, called blubber, which helps with buoyancy and swimming, serves as an energy reserve, and helps to regulate their body temperature.

WHY I LOVE ANIMALS

If you’re looking for one of the coolest and most enchanting animal experiences at the Houston Zoo, look no further than the California sea lions who call the Galápagos Exhibit home. Recently, I had the unforgettable opportunity to get up close and personal with one very special sea lion named Calypso…what a fun moment! I was photographed with sea lions a number of years ago and I was just as excited this time as I was back then!

Sea lions are truly fascinating creatures, and seeing them in action, so close, is just cooler than words can say. The Galápagos Exhibit is a vibrant, carefully designed habitat that brings a bit of the Galápagos

Islands right here to Houston, showcasing not only sea lions but a rich diversity of wildlife from this unique ecosystem. While the exhibit is inspired by the Galápagos, you won’t find actual Galápagos sea lions here because they’re protected in their native habitat. Instead, the exhibit features their close relatives, California sea lions, who are just as charismatic and playful.

California sea lions are known for their intelligence, agility, and social nature. Did you know they can swim up to 25 miles per hour and dive over 900 feet deep? Their barking calls are unmistakable and part of what makes them such entertaining zoo residents. These

sea lions are incredibly social animals and form strong bonds with one another. They also form unique bonds with humans as I witnessed Calypso's keeper, Amanda Perry, offering behavior prompts that Calypso gladly performed for some yummy fish.

At the Houston Zoo’s Galápagos Exhibit, you’ll meet Calypso and her companions: Kamia, Max, TJ, Jonah, Ariel, Cali, Freya and Gaia. Each sea lion has its own unique characteristics, but Calypso is known for having the longest whiskers of any sea lion in the colony and she is appreciated for her very vocal and energetic style. To me, she has pure star quality!

Our session together was packed with fun moments, all captured in the five images Calypso showing off her "skills". There’s Calypso giving me a kiss — yes, a genuine sea lion smooch! Plus I got a hug, a handshake, a hand-clapping session (or should I say flipper-clapping) and she topped it off

with "speaking" to me. Her range of behaviors were even more extensive including her in-water athleticism.

Spending time with Calypso and her friends was more than just a photoshoot — it was a reminder of the joy and connection animals bring into our lives. The experience was surreal: being so close to such a powerful yet gentle marine mammal felt like a special gift.

And just as the gift-giving season arrives, a family trip to the zoo this holiday season would be a great opportunity to create memories. Or, the perfect gift for an animal lover would be an annual zoo membership.

Be sure to visit Calypso and her friends at the Galápagos Exhibit for guaranteed smiles. Watching the sea lions splash, play, and interact will make you forget every worry you may have!

ASPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

What inspired you to focus your veterinary career on chiropractic, acupuncture, and rehabilitation for animals?

A horse trainer friend was using someone unqualified for chiropractic care, which led to her horse being injured. She asked for my help and encouraged me to learn animal chiropractic myself. Around the same time, I was exploring chiropractic care personally and attended an inspiring session by Dr. Sharon Willoughby at the AAEP Conference. She founded the AVCA and Options for Animals, where I later trained.

In 1996, I became the first veterinarian certified by the AVCA in Houston. The positive impact on animals was so profound that by 2006, I focused solely on mobile chiropractic services. In 2008, I opened the Veterinary Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic and earned my acupuncture certification from the Chi Institute. The combination of chiropractic, acupuncture, and rehab has since allowed me to provide more comprehensive and effective care.

Q: Your clinic is one of the few with both the AquaPaws Underwater Treadmill and the AquaPacer. How do these therapies benefit dogs, cats, and horses differently?

A: The AquaPaws helps dogs recover from surgery or injury by building muscle, strength, and improving gait, especially after spinal issues or arthritis. It’s also used for conditioning

working dogs. The AquaPacer is for horses, used later in rehab to build muscle and mobility before riding, and for conditioning after rest. It’s also used for giant breed dogs that don’t fit in the AquaPaws. Dogs adapt quickly to underwater treadmill therapy, while horses need sedation and gradual training to get comfortable. Dogs get treats during sessions, but horses are rewarded afterward since they can’t walk and eat simultaneously.

Q: How do chiropractic and acupuncture complement traditional veterinary medicine?

A: Chiropractic and acupuncture address the root causes of issues by improving energy flow and joint motion, helping the body heal itself. They reduce pain and improve mobility, especially in older arthritic dogs, often extending quality life by years. They also support internal conditions like diabetes, heart, and kidney issues, and enhance quality of life for cancer patients alongside or instead of traditional treatments.

Q. Can you share a memorable success story where rehab made a life-changing difference?

A: Drew, a puppy with spinal damage from a parasite, couldn’t walk when he arrived. After treatment and rehab at our clinic, he learned to walk and thrived, becoming our clinic greeter and a beloved dog. Drew lived happily to 15, inspiring everyone with his spirit despite his disabilities.

Q: What should pet parents know about the role of rehabilitation in helping animals recover from injury or surgery?

A: I’m not sure why veterinary medicine previously thought animals didn’t need rehab after injuries or surgery, although it’s standard in human medicine. Animals recover faster and much better with rehab after surgery. Rehab reduces the number of cases we once considered surgical failures—many of which were simply animals not using a limb on their own without help. Rehab helps restore normal gait and posture, reduces compensations, and can decrease the development or severity of arthritis later in life.

Q. You've pursued extensive training, from chiropractic to Chinese food therapy and herbal medicine. How do these modalities come together in your approach to care?

A. All of these modalities combine to improve the overall health of my patients and to look more holistically at the whole animal in order to improve their lives.

Q. Many people aren't aware that animals can benefit from chiropractic care. What misconceptions would you like to clear up?

A. Anything with a spine can benefit from Chiropractic. Maintaining proper motion through the spine and joints helps to keep the body balanced, improved mobility, keeps us more active, helps to keep the nervous system functioning well, decreases pain and releases endorphins during a treatment.

Q. You grew up in Houston and have deep ties to the community. What does it mean to you to be able to bring such specialized care to local pets and their families?

A. I grew up here in Houston and am glad I can help people with their pets in my community. I do see clients that I have known from school, horse clients that I have known from when I showed and rode horses, friends and neighbors, so it is fun seeing people I have known for so long that I can help. It is fun seeing the children of older clients, now grown bringing in their pets because of the benefits they saw with their childhood pets from chiropractic and/or acupuncture.

I am proud of being able to employ and enable 12 people from our community to make a living at our clinic. We have high school students and vet tech students that do internships for their vet assistant program that work at our clinic and we teach them about chiropractic, acupuncture and rehab. We also enjoy having vet students doing externships and other veterinarians doing their internships for their acupuncture or rehab certifications coming and spending time with us at VCRC. I enjoy the opportunity to teach others about what we do at VCRC!
