Rodeo101

Here are some top tips from veteran rodeo fans

Keep a packet of baby wipes and hand sanitizer in your bag whether you have a baby or not

There are a lot of ways to get messy

Funnel cakes as big as your face – enough said

Be sure to ride on the Western Hemisphere’s largest portable Ferris Wheel. Best view ever!

Deep fried pecan pie should be on every Texan’s list of can’t miss foods

It can take up to two hours to get parked and get your ticket, even if you’ve paid for it and are just picking it up Be sure to plan for long waits and get there early.

The Yellow Lot (OST1) located at 2103 South Braeswood is the most convenient public parking area to the rodeo

Visit the livestock barns but keep in mind that the animals are often tense because of the unaccustomed activity Don’t stick fingers into stalls or try to pet or feed the animals unless the owner gives his permission.

Bring along some eye drops and Benadryl if you have a child that is sensitive to allergens Cow or horse dander can be just as troublesome as cat or dog dander to someone with allergies

There are special seats for the visually or hearing impaired rodeo guest They are sold on a first come first serve basis so contact the ticket office at 832-667-1080 if this is something you’ll need

When you first enter the arena there will be some vendors. Resist the urge to buy because there are many more vendors in Reliant Center

Young children will need a stroller – even if they are 4 or 5 and have mastered walking If you don’t have a stroller you’ll be carrying a child at some point.

You’ll have to check your stroller in the stadium so be sure to take an extra diaper, bottle, and pacifier with you It’s a hassle to have to run out to get something from the stroller

Not all of the family bathrooms have changing stations Be prepared for that possibility and bring a changing pad along If you have a child that startles easily or has issues with loud noises bring headphones and load soothing music on your smartphone in case you need to drown out some of the noise

Choose a very lightweight stroller if possible If you’ll be using public transportation it can be a huge hassle to wrestle a stroller on and off A light umbrella stroller is much easier to deal with

FirstThingsFirst–ScheduleandTickets

The first thing that you are going to want to do is get tickets. It’s not as easy as it sounds because there are a variety of concerts and special activities scheduled for certain days Look over the schedule carefully so that you can see the things that interest you most whether it’s Cody Johnson or the Mutton Bustin’ Contest

wwwrodeohoustoncom/ExhibitorContestant/LivestockShow/Scheduleaspx

You’ll also find maps, parking information, and just about anything else you might need You can buy tickets online Ticket prices vary depending on the shows that you want to see and the seats that you want to get Children under the age of two are free. Season passes are available – and they’re a great idea if there are several things that you want to see on different days.

Gettingthere&Parking

Parking lots within walking distance of NRG Park are available for Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ visitors to utilize All Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo parking lots are cashless. Rate is $25. Best bet is to take an Uber, the Metro Rail or the Park & Ride. For information on locations, times and drop off areas: https://wwwrodeohoustoncom/plan-your-visit/parking-transportation/

You are going to be doing a lot of walking so the main thing is to wear comfortable shoes – and a pair that you don’t mind getting dirty Rodeos are lots of fun but, they are not the cleanest environments in the world While boots are always appropriate, don’t wear any that are not well broken in.

Keep in mind that the weather in Houston in March can be problematic It could be chilly in the morning, then heat up in the afternoon While average temperatures range from the 50s to the 70s you could find yourself sweating in an unseasonable 85 degrees or shivering in the midst of an unexpected cold front Dress everyone in layers so that you can adjust your clothing as the temperature changes

FirstAid

There are three first aid stations available should you need them. They are staffed by professional medical personnel and equipped to handle most medical emergencies

NRG Center Room 109 and Hall C Lobby

Just outside the front of NRG Arena and inside the main doors facing the carnival Southeast entrance of NRG Stadium

There’s a lot of fun things to do, and everyone has a different hit list.

Be sure to check out the visitor’s guide for a full breakdown of activities. www.rodeohouston.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/2026_Visitors-Guide_outlined.pdf

Hereareafew‘Don’ts’

There aren’t many rules but here are some that you need to be aware of before you go

No outside food or beverage unless it’s a medical necessity

No glass containers

No professional camera equipment or lenses over 12-inches long

No laser pointers

All backpacks, purses and diaper bags are permissible but subject to search

No animals other than service animals

No obscene, indecent, or offensive clothing as determined by Reliant Park

No clothing that intentionally obscures your face

No smoking

No firearms

MakeMemories

That first rodeo is a never to be forgotten experience. Make the most of your Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo visit by preparing ahead of time, planning for your comfort, and checking the schedule so that you see those things that are most important to you.

Take lots of pictures, try as many new foods as possible, and buy a bottle of Pepto Bismal on the way home If you are like most people your first rodeo experience won’t be your last

My son’s first sleepover was at the home of a nurse. “He’ll be safer with her than he would be with me!” I reasoned His sister was upset that he got to go At two and a half years older she had never slept over The problem was that her invites had generally been by parents I didn’t know Not only was my son going to be in the care of a nurse, the nurse was someone I knew well. The difference between the sleepover that he got to attend and the ones that she had been deprived of was a safety issue I felt good about sending him and it wasn’t a matter of his age

Sleepovers can cause anxiety in even the most seasoned parents How old should children be? How do I know they’re safe? Will they have a good time, or be cranky? And although some parents ban them completely, others consider them an indispensable right of passage

Sleepovers have many benefits

Kids get a longer unstructured time to socialize Especially with our busy schedules, unstructured play time is to be treasured. This larger block of time than they usually get with each other can provide needed time to socialize more deeply and engage in more intricate play

Children get to see how other families function Getting to see how other families eat dinner or their bedtime routines expands children’s horizons Whether it is different foods to try at dinner or different expectations about bedtime, children get a peek into a whole new world

Sleepovers promote independence As children grow older these experiences of being away from their parents will benefit them as they ultimately tackle the wider world by themselves When your child wants to go on a school trip or to camp, he or she will already have the experience of having been away from home.

Sleepovers increase responsibility as children learn how to navigate a new situation by themselves Normal routines are suspended as they take charge of packing and getting ready for bed themselves.

How do you know if your child is ready for a sleepover?

According to clinical psychologist Samantha Rodman, there are a number of signs to keep in mind

Readiness for a sleepover is highly dependent on the individual child According to Rodman, “If a child does well when traveling and sleeping in other beds, that is a good sign. If they are independent and view the sleepover as an adventure, allow them to try it out Kids with social anxiety may be more hesitant and try later than other kids Overall, by 4th grade most kids will be ready to sleep at a good friend's house ”

Before the Sleepover

In his book “Protecting the Gift,” Gavin DeBecker recommends treating the family of a potential sleepover with as much scrutiny as you would a babysitter One easy way to accomplish this is to insist that before you send your child on a sleepover, that child spend the night at your home. This gives you a chance to get to know the family and find out more about them Even if it’s a family you know well you will want to verify details, such as who will be home on the night of the sleepover, whether there are guns in the house and what types of media are allowed

Discuss your expectations in advance Of course you want your child to use their best manners, to go to bed when expected and to eat politely at the table But it is equally important that your kids know that they can call you at any time if they are uncomfortable

During the Sleepover

Most children will be happy with the additional time to play together

But if you want something more structured when you host, try a themed sleepover

Maybe it’s a movie night or baking night Or perhaps an indoor camping party is more your child’s style

After the Sleepover

Discuss how the sleepover went afterward. What were the ups and downs? This information can help you plan the next sleepover or let you know if there’s anything you need to discuss with the other parents

Plan for an easy following day Most kids don’t sleep much on the night of a sleepover They stay up well past bedtime and are often up at the crack of dawn due to the excitement It’s better to plan a sleepover when your child can rest and recover the next day than to have to attend an important event with a crabby child

With a little preparation it’s possible to not only survive your children’s sleepovers but help your children make great memories! By keeping these ideas in mind next time your child asks for a sleepover you can do your best to ensure that your child has a good experience.

Kid-friendly

There is a standard of social etiquette that is implied, whereby it is seemingly agreed upon that some environments (mostly restaurants) are simply not appropriate for younger children. There's no reason you shouldn't enjoy a nice meal out simply because you have children in tow. Friendly waitstaff, menus for fickle palates and sophisticated atmospheres are just some of the perks you should enjoy when you choose to dine out

My kids have never been the type to sit quietly and eat. They are a bit messy, loud, and couldn’t stay seated in their chair if their little energetic lives depended on it! Fortunately, I’ve been able to find quite a few in Houston that have amazing cuisine and atmosphere

Enjoy!

Great Reasons To Send Your Kids To Sleep away Camp 5

There are so many great reasons why you should consider sending your kids to sleep away camp this summer, and it’s not only because they’ll have a whole lot of fun Based on my experiences as the parent of a teenager who loves summer camp as well as conversations with other parents, I’ve learned that sleepaway camp can be characterbuilding Here are five different ways that your kids will develop and mature

"Camp: Where strangers become friends & friendships last forever"

Independence

For most kids, sleepaway camp is the first time they get to experience real independence They’re away from their parents and other adult family members for an extended period of time, and they’ve got to quickly learn how to take care of themselves, from getting themselves ready in the morning to choosing their daily activities.

Of course, there are counselors who’re responsible for the overall welfare of the kids, but unlike teachers who tell kids what to do, camp counselors act much more like older brothers and sisters who’re on a joint adventure with the kids I’ll never forget the first time my spouse and I picked up our son from sleepaway camp He acted like a completely different person than the one we’d left behind only a few short weeks earlier: independent, mature, and with a confident, knowing demeanor

Organization

Sleepaway teaches kids how to become better organized. From the moment they wake up in the morning to the moment they go to sleep at night, they have to make many choices that require them to learn how to organize themselves and their time For example, in the morning they’re supposed to wake up, get dressed, brush their teeth, make their beds, and walk t the dining hall at the same time and together with all the othe kids they’re bunking with But unlike in school where teachers tell kids exactly what to do and when, camp counselors expec that kids figure it out themselves And that includes not forgetting to put their dirty clothes in the hamper on laundry day

Compassion

Comradery

Kids also learn some very valuable lessons about comradery Camps often let parents request that their kids bunk with friends from home Yet, they’ll also bunk with many other kids, often from different states and countries This’ll teach them how to get along with and enjoy the company of kids with very different backgrounds than their own Most camps are aware of this and organize activities aimed at creating a strong sense of comradery and community, including evening camp fires, sing-alongs, and the ever-popular Camp Olympics.

Not every kid easily adjusts to being away from their parents for a long period of time, and not every kid easily makes new friends If there’s one area where camp counselors do actively step in to help kids adapt it’s when someone is homesick or just not happy Camp counselors show kids how to treat others with compassion, care, and respect Many camps also have a buddy system where kids are teamed up to support another and do fun things together.

Conflict-Resolution

Sometimes, despite camp counselors’ best efforts, conflicts do occur over who bunks together, who sits next to whom at meal times, and who plays with whom. After all, kids often live in cramped quarters at camp, with unfamiliar roommates. But that’s not such a bad thing: one of the most important skills kids learn at sleepaway camp is how to solve interpersonal conflicts on their own Camp counselors certainly step in to solve serious conflicts But they’ll typically let the kids solve the small ones on their own And learning how to solve conflict is a great skill kids will bring home with them and use long after the camp is over

Hello Beach

Here We Come

S. PADRE ISLAND

South Padre Island

sits just off the southernmost point of the Texas Coast between the shallow Laguna Madre and the Gulf of Mexico The soft powdery beaches, warm turquoise waters, diverse eateries, and an exploding art scene have given South Padre Island traction to become the perfect year round vacation destination for families

Here are some of our favorite places to stay, visit, eat, and relax.

Not just for college Spring Breakers

Where to Stay

With many lodging options on the island, our pick for families is the Courtyard by Marriott South Padre Island. The newest hotel on the island boasts large rooms, modern amenities, a resort style pool, direct beach access, and is centrally located to many attractions making it an ideal choice for families For extended stays there are many rentals available that can accommodate any families’ needs as well

For Nature Lovers

Beyond the days spent on the beach, there are many opportunities for nature lovers to experience wildlife around the island Sea Turtle Inc. is a small conservation and rehabilitation hospital for injured sea turtles and is a must see for anyone visiting South Padre Island. Where to go for spring break? or

Beaver Creek, Colorado sets the bar HIGH for family travelers

If"Before we left to head back home, we had already started planning a trip back in 6 months"

you're looking for somewhere new to vacation with the family, I would highly recommend Beaver Creek, CO With frequent flights to Denver from Houston, it's a quick trip to your destination

From the time we landed, I knew the trip was going to be a breeze With flight delays and cancellations in these uncertain times, reservations can be hard to keep Upon arriving at Denver Airport, behind schedule due to flight delays, I went into a panic about our shuttle reservation and wondering how we were going to make it to our hotel. Yet the Epic Mountain Express workers were quick to accommodate us even though they were booked for the day **With kids in tow, I would recommend the personal car service they offer.

Where to Stay

Upon arrival we were gifted with one of the best views The Pine Lodge, A Rock Resort has to offer Picture a 180 degree view of snowcapped mountains, twinkle lights in the trees around the village, with hues of soft pinks, yellows, and oranges on the horizon at sunrise A warm cup of coffee or tea, if that’s your preference sitting on the deck in the morning as the sun rises over the mountains to wake the sleepy dreamers No matter the timing morning, sunset or night, the view was probably the hardest part to leave The Pine Lodge offers accommodations for families of all sizes from regular rooms to 4-bedroom townhomes with kitchens and patios Close access to the slopes, walking distance to the village and a quick shuttle ride can get you access all over the resort especially with any tiny feet in tow The amenities offer everything you need and the dining experience speaks for itself

tips for how to prepare for bringing along children:

1 Snagging a couple bottles of water and canned air upon arrival before making the trek up the mountain to a resort will help with dehydration, headaches and potentially decrease the effects of possible Altitude Sickness

2 Taking a personal car from the Epic Mountain Express so that the ride is quicker and more personal with children

3 Getting lodging with multiple rooms for everyone to have their own space and ability to sleep, as needed

4 Making sure there is a kitchen in our accommodations; as we travel with a food allergy it makes it easier to cook our own food without issue

5. Grabbing food, snacks, toys, and souvenirs at the Beaver Creek Market to keep everybody happy!

What to Do

I personally have always avoided learning to ski or snowboard, due to my fear in heights. However, at Beaver Creek there are certain lifts that are full gondola or partial gondola to aid in getting children up to the top of the slope I loved that I had the option for the gondola because it allowed me to take lessons The Ski school is for everyone 3+ and the kids’ classes were the best thing to experience Watching the little one’s confidence grow and leaving their parents to hit the slopes was inspiring! Our little one is not quite old enough, but look out when she is!

**If you plan on taking snow board lessons for the first time carve out 3-4 days for lessons before you will be able to make it down a hill/slope. Oh, and be prepared to fall a few times!

Learning how to snowboard for the first in our thirties was a BLAST, but watching a pack of toddlers’ ride by with better skills, faster speed and less falls was a quick punch to the ego At the end of the day being able to soak our bodies in the hot tub was a delicious feeling **Pack those bathing suits and be ready to soak those sore muscles

McCoy Park is Beaver Creek’s newest addition to the slope experience It offers a 250-acre expansion of lift-served, welcoming ski terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers & riders, as well as a dedicated family friendly zone for beginner and low intermediate skiers The new learning terrain features 17 trails served by two new lifts, while still maintaining snowshoe and cross-country areas We didn’t get to experience McCoy Park for ourselves because snowboarding lessons for beginners start on a different mountain in another park It's definitely on the list for the next visit!

Let's talk Food

Every place we tried was delicious Grouse Mountain Grill is attached to the The Pine Lodge, but is more well-known of the two places People fly or drive in just to eat there and head back home! It offers local Colorado farm to table in a scratch kitchen and the finest quality service Breakfast was good, but dinner was great!

Citrea is their newest addition to the restaurant line up Citrea combines fresh local ingredients with modern culinary interpretations of Mediterranean cuisine It is in the heart of Beaver Creek Village and runs alongside the ice rink Delish!

**A must do experience is dining at Allie’s Cabin where guests are whisked away from C Bar in Beaver Creek Village to the cabin via an open-air sleigh. You can dine near the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace while enjoying views of Beaver Creek Village below Known for its atmosphere of rustic and intimate elegance, Allie’s Cabin pours forth a refined, classic Northern Italian fare. Each of these places it made it easy to travel with a gluten allergy and not be concerned about food choices.

Not a fan of the snow or the slopes?

There is plenty to do!Burton and Beaver Creek Sports are both great places for ski and snowboard rentals but also have great clothing and gear to buy Options for stores range from children’s clothing and toy stores, jewelry to sunglasses **The ice rink in the middle of the village is a great place to stop and play or grab a bite to eat. Peppered around the village are fire pits with seating to stop and take in the scenery We didn’t stay in the village but on the outskirts and the mobile app of Beaver Creek Village helped enhance our visit We were able to browse services available in the resort and plan transportation.

We can't wait to head back soon when our little girl is a little older and can hit the slopes and the ice rink Beaver Creek, CO is a beautiful place to make some great family memories
