Teaching Tolerance & Acceptance in a Changing World

www.reallygreatsite.com

According to the latest FBI data, there were 11,323 single-bias hate crimes reported for the year 2024 alone, consisting of 14,123 victims, numbers that have risen dramatically in recent years. Because most hate crimes go unreported, the actual number is likely much greater.

The numbers just seem to be getting worse. Now more than ever, we need to teach tolerance and brotherly love over violence.

Notably, young men under 26 are the perpetrators of a significant percentage of these violent acts, according to various agencies. Religious-based biases, as well as ethnic and racial biases, are learned during early childhood, explains the Leadership Conference Education Fund. Young children exposed to these prejudices hold numerous stereotypes by the time they reach the age of twelve.

In a society as diverse as the United States, the misconceptions often held toward those who are different, including those of other religious faiths, is troubling. As parents and educators, we must strive to change these patterns, so our kids grow into kind and accepting adults.

Part of the problem is that kids, like adults, learn of violence perpetrated by individuals within a particular religion and come to believe that everyone within that faith is violent. So kids need to understand there will always be a few bad apples within any religion, even their own. Individuals who commit violence don't define the character of everyone or even a majority within that group or religion.

Tolerance begins at home

There are many ways to teach children religious tolerance. But we must first recognize that our own attitudes and actions toward those of different faiths play a crucial role. Children are observant and catch even the subtlest stereotyping and discriminatory behaviors. According to experts, attitudes held by those living in the home will have the greatest impact on the way children perceive people who are different.

There are many ways you can encourage your child to accept those of other faiths and even those of no faith. If you haven't already, explain your beliefs to your child and why you hold your views. Then share factual, non-derogatory information about other religious beliefs as well. Read books with your child on world religions, diversity, and tolerance.

Have open discussions and encourage questions. Explain the importance of religious freedom for your own family and why it's also essential for others. Then make sure your child understands being accepting of another doesn't mean you must hold that person's beliefs as true.

Learning tolerance outside the home

Talk to your kid's school, as recommended by Tolerance.org, to make sure textbooks and curricula are up to date to reflect equity and multiculturalism. Ask teachers and staff if and how they approach the task of teaching tolerance in the classroom. If the school or class doesn't already include tolerance education in its program, try to help activate it. Ask if you can share ideas with staff. Also, learn other ways you can assist the school in promoting positive attitudes toward diversity.

Help your child develop acceptance by sharing the beliefs of relatives and friends who hold different views from your own. It often comes as a surprise, even to adults, to learn some family members hold very different religious beliefs. Ask those of other views to share with your child what they believe and why. Make sure these adults understand your purpose, so they won't attempt to proselytize your child or criticize your own beliefs. Instead, ask them to share their beliefs with neutrality. When your child discovers that good, wellrespected family members and friends hold a wide range of beliefs, your child will be better equipped to accept others as well.

Fight Intolerance

Another recommendation by Tolerance.org is to encourage your child to fight stereotypes and intolerance actively. Help your child to form a club, study circle, or sponsor a walkathon for diversity. Your child will have the opportunity to meet kids of other beliefs while at the same time, learning the importance of social responsibility.

Also, confront biased behavior expressed by family and friends, especially if your child witnesses it. For example, if grandma complains that her "Jewish neighbors don't take care of their lawn," don't brush the comment aside. Otherwise, both grandmother and your child will perceive your silence as acceptance of the stereotype or prejudicial remark.

Confronting family and friends isn't easy but can be done tactfully. Don't criticize. Just nonchalantly but clearly acknowledge grandmother's frustrations with the unkempt yard. Then point out it has nothing to do with being Jewish. By doing so, your child will learn such biased comments are not necessarily valid. It also teaches your child not to be apathetic toward intolerance.

If your child attends church, Sunday school, or other religious functions, talk with the leaders and teachers to learn their attitudes and levels of tolerance. Many are accepting of different religious views.

Unfortunately, some religious leaders perpetuate intolerance by preaching against nonbelievers, those of other faiths, or people or groups that don't adhere to their specific lifestyle guidelines. Other religious leaders may contribute to stereotyping in more subtle ways.

Kids are very perceptive, though, and will recognize the biases all the same. If you do detect prejudiced attitudes, look for another church or denomination that's less biased.

Finally, talk with your church about ways it can teach and promote religious tolerance among its youth. After all, the desire for peace on earth is common among most of the world's religions.

Love Lessons for Love Lessons for

the Whole Family the Whole Family

If love is a language, then teach your family members to become conversant. According to Gary D. Chapman in his book, The Five Love Languages, people experience love in five ways. We experience love through words of affirmation, by spending quality time together, by receiving gifts, by performing acts of service, or through physical touch. According to Chapman, every person on earth has a primary "language of love."

I understand what Chapman means when he says every person processes love uniquely. And I also think that there is much to be gained by playing around with all the love languages and encouraging members of our families to do the same. Which acts of love make you feel seen, appreciated, and cherished? What about your spouse and the kids? We can all learn to communicate what we like and need to our family members, so everyone can get their needs met and no one has to end up feeling misunderstood or neglected. Which acts of love make you feel seen, appreciated, and cherished? What about your spouse and the kids? We can all learn to communicate what we like and need to our family so everyone can get their needs met and no one has to end up feeling misunderstood or neglected. Here are ten ways to increase family affection at home:

Hug your family members at every age

Hug your family members at every age

It has been scientifically proven that hugging lowers blood pressure and reduces stress, so what more of an excuse do you need? If your older kids try to brush you off, tell them you have to hug them - it's for their good health. And, of course, encourage kids to receive hugs when they are struggling emotionally, so they don't become habitual sufferers.

It has been scientifically proven that hugging lowers blood pressure and reduces stress, so what more of do you need? If your older kids try to brush you off, tell them you have to hug them - it's for their good health. And, of course, encourage kids to receive hugs when they are struggling emotionally, so they don't become habitual sufferers.

Set A Loving Example

If you want your kids to have selfesteem and so they can live the best lives possible, you have to teach them to love themselves first and foremost Unfortunately, if the parents can't model this, the children are not likely to learn it, at least not from them So, take good care of you first, and then take good care of your brood. Love yourself and care for yourself so you can best love others and care for others.

Personalize "I love you" for everyone

Childhood nicknames can create affectionate moments in later years If calling your child by a nickname will offend, even in private, then express the sentiment in whatever way the recipient will hear you best Forget how you want to say it, and opt for what will garner th t itive response from your

Don't Forget "We all love you"

Get in the habit of speaking for the whole family A family is a "we," and love goes at the center of this complex constellation This does not mean your toddler, teen, or college grad will always be eager to express emotion So go ahead and be the voice of the whole family, as needed Then, once you have spoken for all, let even a begrudging nod of agreement be enough.

Love life & it will love your family back.

Your attitude towards life is either going to inspire or haunt your family You may think you are being realistic, but if you constantly chorus that life isn't fair, that money doesn't grow on trees, and oh well, it could have been worse, your kids are going to grow up expecting life to let them down. Sure, life can be a bumpy ride sometimes, but never forget that it's unconditional love and positive encouragement from the people we love most that makes the challenges more bearable.

Encourage family members to express

You can't give people what they need and want if they don't know what that is Offer extra support to a family member who can't identify what she needs and wants Don't let her always sacrifice her opinion for whatever the rest of the group wants Every member of the family needs to know how to dig deep and express her own point of view If you ask for wants and needs, you'll encourage every family member to figure theirs out.

Spend Quality Time together with family

Teach kids to be caring to others

Teach kids how to make thoughtful gestures that make the most of their talents Or get them out of the house and involved in assisting a good cause If family members have trouble expressing care to each other, maybe they will have an easier time expressing affection and concern outside the family. If having you are around seems to make them less charitable, then let another trusted adult guide them.

Squeeze in small gestures of love

Find little ways to express physical touch, especially for those family members who try to shirk it Squeeze a shoulder, pat a knee, rumple some hair, kiss your hand and then pat their cheek And mix it up a little It's when affection becomes rote that teens roll their eyes at you and groan So, get creative and say it like you mean it. Catch them when they least expect it, and they won't have time to duck away.

Love should never be a competition. My daughter loves to spend daddydaughter time with my husband, and I'm glad she does They have the things they like to do together, like watching comedy shows on TV or going out to eat And my daughter and I have our favorite things to do like watching chick flicks or going shopping Be sure to carve out quality time with every family member, including your spouse.

I LOVE YOU

Appreciate the Attempt

Remember that there is no such thing as perfect families Also remind yourself that sometimes love will flow more readily and easily between family members than other times And when a family member tries to do something genuinely kind or nice, try to appreciate the sentiment behind the gesture Don't let them be teased or called names for expressing affection. Love is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Stay in & Snuggle

Romantic Movies to Watch Together

If you are weary of the half-hearted crimson roses, kissing bears, and heartshaped boxes of bonbons Valentine's Days often include, why not consider staying in and watching an oldie-butgoodie romance instead? You'll save a bundle on an evening out with babysitter

Of course, when it comes to romantic movies, spouses don't always see eye-toeye So, if he can't tolerate another sappy chick flick and you can't stand another testosterone-fueled action movie, don't worry, I've rounded up nine sweet movie treats that men and women can enjoy together

So put the kids to bed a little early, pour some bubbly, pop up your favorite corn, and select the perfect Hollywood confection to warm up a winter evening. To help you choose, I've compared each film to a type of bon-bon Let the snuggling begin!

An English Walnut Cluster: Dead Again

Fruits

Fruit helps supply your body with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants

You'll love this movie to death Once upon a time, Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson were a real-life couple But that was then and this is now Or perhaps then is now and the rest is payback You might not be sure either, once you get knee-deep into this 1991 romance thriller that's artfully laced with surprises Branagh is Mike Church, a private eye looking not for "Miss Right" but for "Miss Right Now." The woman he finds instead is Grace (Thompson), a mute mystery woman searching for her forgotten identity Without their realizing it, the same karma that brings them back together may also cleft their love in twain

A Chocolate-covered Cherry: Say Anything

It's hard to find a first time love story with staying power but this one makes the cut Who wouldn't enjoy this late eighties romantic comedy written and directed by Cameron Crowe? Diane Court (Ione Skye) is graduating at the top of her class and facing a bright and ambitious future. But she realizes almost too late that she has missed out on all the usual high school rites of passage Lucky for her that's where Lloyd Dobbler (John Cusack) comes in He's just the dare-to-be-great kind of guy who's looking to watch over a girl like Diane-much to her father's chagrin

A Chocolaty Heart-shaped Crisp: Notting Hill

Can an unassuming bookstore owner and a movie star find lasting love? Hugh Grant's bookish William says it best in this 1999 hit romantic comedy, "I live in Notting Hill You live in Beverly Hills. Everyone in the world knows who you are, my mother has trouble remembering my name " But there is something about William's stable, anonymous life (not to mention his quirky charm) that Julia Robert's Anna Scott can't seem to resist And if that isn't enough, there's always the colorful vocabulary of Grant's ridiculing roomie, played by Rhys Ifans, and the incredulous reactions of his mates to keep you rooting for this unlikely relationship.

A Dark Chocolate Fig Truffle: Frida

You'll appreciate this celebration of colorful, messy and enduring loveiconic-artist style Director Julie Taymor elevates this 2002 biopic of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo to the heights of moving picture poetry Selma Hayek plays the bold and colorful Frida, who takes as many risks in life and love as she does in her art But her love affair with Diego Rivera is the one that will keep you watching Alfred Molina plays Rivera, a man "physiologically incapable of fidelity " Unfaithful is one thing, the real question becomes can he be loyal?

Milk Chocolate

Butter Cream: The Philadelphia Story

One of the prettiest sights in this fine pretty world is watching Katharine Hepburn try to make up her mind about which man she should marry Even better when her character, Tracy Lord, seems about to teeter off her pedestal, as she tries to choose from three charming men including Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant Stewart, as Macaulay "Mike" Connor, is in his element, matching mercurial moods to Hepburn's larger-than-life gilded girl on the verge of softening A witty 1940's classic for a classy couple.

Chocolate Covered Nuts: Benny and Joon

Raisins play a pivotal role in a crushinducing conversation in this quirky 1993 romantic comedy. A sometimes serious (thanks to Aidan Quinn's Benny), sometimes slapstick (thanks to Johnny Depp's Sam), sometimes thought-provoking (thanks to Mary Stuart Masterson's Joon) romp into the complicated combination of love and mental illness That's oddball amoré Think it's inappropriate to traipse so lightly into the land of mental instability? Think again

A Chocolate Caramel:

The Bridges of Madison County

Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid are smokin' hot at midlife despite the fact that Meryl Streep's character is married with children and Clint Eastwood is trying to pull off middle age at 65 (and succeeding very nicely) Director Eastwood plays National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid, who awakens a volcanic passion in farm wife Streep she never knew she had. After four days, one of the most emotionally riveting moments in film history comes down to a car door handle Slightly hokey, but totally worth it

Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch: Reality Bites

He loves me, I hate him He loves me, I hate myself Generation X-ters Winona Rider, Ethan Hawke and Ben Stiller (as Lelaina, Troy and Michael respectively) constellate at an early peak in their collective careers to deliberate yuppie vs slacker values. Friend Vicki, played by a sassy Janeane Garofalo, thinks Troy and Lelaina should just "do it and get it over with," but the rest of us won't mind if they take their sweet time. Stiller directs philosophizing, ambition-a-phobia and a healthy dose of nineties ambivalence with a movie-within-amovie flourish

Pancakes and Paczkis (powdered, filled fried dough) are a staple at a Mardi Gras feast. Traditionally in European countries such as England and Poland, this was a great way to empty your pantry of ingredients like fats, butter and sugar before the start of Lent You can balance out the sugary meal by adding fresh fruits and vegetables in the recognized Mardi Gras colors of purple, yellow and green Other options for Fat Tuesday might include traditional New Orleans dinners like gumbo, jambalaya and po’ boys Finish the feast off with some Hurricane mocktails.

The Perfect Match Choosing the right camp for your child

Sleep away, or residential, camp conjures up a variety of images in people’s minds. Movies about summer camp depict it in a fairly fun but careless manner, making it seem like only fun and games with no real goal in mind, and even often a place to learn bad habits; if a parent had an important summer camp experience as a child, the image may give a warm, nostalgic feeling. One thing that many moms and dads think once the idea of summer camp for “my son or daughter” comes into play is: “Will he or she be safe?” and “How can I trust other adults, particularly young adults, with my child?”

The family that is looking for a camp for a boy or girl must first of all think of what they are hoping the child will get from a summer camp experience.

Independence?

Physical growth in skills and strength?

Spiritual growth?

Friends?

Nature and outdoor skills?

Now that a list has been made of what the goal is, search on the American Camp Association website for a camp that is right for your child

There are many great camps that aren’t ACA Accredited, but if a camp is accredited, you know that they are being scrutinized at least every three years by youth camp professionals, in how they run their business, how they work with staff and children, and how they manage risks inherent to outdoor activities ACA Accreditation does not mean that you should fail to ask important questions, though, such as:

What is your program’s mission and what kind of goals do you have for each camper?

What is a typical day at camp like? What activities will my child get to do each day or during his/her time at this camp?

Who hires your staff and where are most staff members from?

Where will campers sleep?

What is your screening procedure? (this should include interviews, reference checks, and background checks via a reputable company )

From year to year, what percentage of campers return to your camp? (40-60 percent is an indication that this is a positive place )

From year to year, what percentage of staff return to your camp? (this will vary because of young people’s many summer choices and commitments, but 25-50 percent is a good target )

Finally, the best way to be sure is to visit the camp that you’re considering sending your child to:

Don’t pre-schedule it. Show up and see how welcome you are; while you should feel welcome, the director shouldn’t give you unsupervised access to the campers (you want to know they are protective of the campers.)

Can they articulate how values and fun are mixed together? (Passion for how kids learn and develop in a playful environment makes the best camp )

Ask them what they do when a child gets homesick (They should have confidence that they can handle it without minimizing what children feel )

If skill development is part of your goal, ask them how they handle instruction in the desired areas (They should have a knowledge of the progression necessary to learn a particular skill.)

With schools raising the academic bar, often your child’s social and emotional development is put on the back burner Great camps are committed to bringing kids up well so that what is gained in good schooling is used in a positive and wellbalanced individual

Great camps will help you raise your child well, contributing to the young man or woman that you are raising

S IT A GOOD IDEA?

While sports can provide a multitude of emotional and physical benefits for kids, specializing in a single sport at too early of an age can pose risks.

How do you know when or if your child should specialize in a sport they love?

early in his high school career to participate in other activities But, by his junior year, he decided that he wanted to return to golf and play at the college level.

competitive advantage later on if cialize early

, co-founder and Cura, works with eking athletes nts. As a former Hughey says both ayed a variety of d her husband left hildren to decide ey wanted to got older

as a talented Rob, co-founderof ted to quit golf

“He had to work harder to reach out to college coaches at that point, but he still was fine,” Hughey says “He found a great school and a great fit for himself So, leave it up to your kids They’ll find their way and figure it out.”

From discussions with many high school and college coaches, Hughey has found that they tend to prefer recruiting multi-sport athletes

“I think football is probably the best example of not specializing,” Harvey says.

“Ninety percent of the first-round draft picks are multi-sports athletes. They’re running track, playing basketball, wrestling It certainly doesn’t hinder their ability to play professionally or get those college scholarships ”

Prevent injury “We see that kids, who have had experiences playing a multitude of sports, have fewer difficulties learning new skills and generally, don’t suffer from the overuse injuries and burnout that are common with youth athletes specializing in one sport,” says physical therapist Tim Cummings, PT, DPT.

An overuse injury occurs as a result of repetitive motion and impact on one area of the body “Overuse injuries are those injuries that cause an athlete to lose more than a month of their sport,” Harvey says. “Those are the biggest ones that we see in the developing athletes that do sports specialization ”

Cummings says the most common overuse injuries he sees in younger patients include ankle sprains, knee pain, Little Leaguer’s Elbow, ACL tears and Osgood-Schlatter

“Osgood-Schlatter is a traction injury on a special type of growth plate called an apophysis, which is at the top of the shin bone,” Cummings explains “The traction comes from strong and relatively tight muscles that develop during puberty and high activity levels. Pain and sometimes swelling can be felt directly over a bump at the bottom of the knee ”

Avoid burnout Participating in different sports throughout the

year is easier on developing bodies and kids are less likely to get bored or even anxious or depressed.

“Athletes wanting to perform at their best, but not being able to, whether it’s due to injury or their fear of disappointing a coach or a parent or even themselves, plus that chronic daily physical demand, can lead to higher rates of burnout and quitting their sport,” Harvey says To allow the body time to rest and recover, kids shouldn’t train for more than eight months out of the year. “And really try not to practice, train or compete more than their age in years per week,” Harvey says (For example, no more than 12 hours per week for a 12-year-old )

Striking a healthy balance between sports and other interests is also beneficial “Some of the high school athletes we work with have stressed the importance of needing down time and being able to spend time with friends,” Hughey says.

Encourage free play. Whether they toss a football around with friends, shoot hoops in the driveway, play tag, or make up competitive games, kids develop motor skills, creativity and social/emotional skills through unstructured play.

“When we start to look at young athletes, the body really needs time to develop, to learn how to run, learn how to jump A child who is physically & mentally ready to specialize:

really learn how to use their bodies and play,” Harvey says “Instead of focusing on one exact sport, try a little bit of different types of sports. Learn how to be athletic first and foremost, and then really have fun with those sports ”

When to specialize “This isn’t a black and white, good or bad issue. Sports like figure skating, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and diving require early specialization due to the high demand to acquire specific sports skills early on,” Cummings says “Peak performance in these sports most often happens before reaching full physical maturity ”

But, he emphasizes that early specialization combined with decreased recovery time does put an athlete at increased risk for overuse injuries no matter the sport chosen

Harvey recommends parents gauge specialization readiness according to a child's physical and mental maturity. Although he’d prefer kids waited until they were at least 12 (ideally 14 or 15), “there’s probably not a specific age that I would say is perfect,” he says

Above all, “you’ve got to listen to your children,” Hughey says. “Countless coaches have told us that you will know when the time is right If you’re pushing it, it’s not the right time ”

Black History Month (BHM), observed every February, is not simply a celebration—it’s a public reminder that U.S. history is incomplete without Black history. For parents, it’s also an opportunity to build children’s understanding of identity, fairness, democracy, and community. In Houston— one of the nation’s most diverse cities and a place with deep Black history— families can move beyond “heroes and holidays” into meaningful learning experiences that last all year.

Yarn Hearts

Looking for something fun to do with the kids to celebrate Valentine's Day, but not sure what?

If you are like me, you're looking for something that is fun and easy for the kids, but also will be something you are happy to display for years to come.

So as I perused the internet and my in-box, I discovered Yarn Hearts from Tidbits.com. Perfect as a one off, for kids with little patience, to just prop in a bookshelf or next to a vase. Or, go crazy and string them together to form garlands you can hang all over the house. Perfect also for a teacher gift to hang in the classroom off of his/her desk!

You only need 3 supplies.

Yarn Tape Cardboard

First trace and cut your heart shapes out of the cardboard. A cookie cutter works great for this. To make it easier for the kids, tape the end of the yarn onto the cardboard.

Then just start wrapping and wrapping around some more. Keeping it tight is going to be key.

Go until all the cardboard is covered and finish with a few loops around the center of the heart.

If you want a loop to hang the heart, simply cut the yarn end and loop it into the yarn that is tightly wound around the heart.

Finish it off with a couple of knots. You can tuck the end inside the yarn for a cleaner look.
