How to Train Your Dragon
Arranged by Sean O’Loughlin
Concert Band Program Notes Foiled Again! Is a tribute to the dastardly deeds of the sepia toned, mustachioed villains of the silent movie era. With billowing capes and menacing cackles, the caricatures of evil doers were typically tying maidens to railroad tracks or dynamite sticks. When their plots were inevitably foiled by the dashing hero, the villain would cry “Curses! Foiled again!”
Foundry is an energetic work that highlights the creativity of percussionists and the idea that music can be made from almost anything. Alongside traditional instruments, performers use “found” objects such as metal pipes or everyday items to create unique metallic sounds.
“Água de Beber” (“Water to Drink”) is a classic bossa nova by Antônio Carlos Jobim, known for its smooth melody and relaxed, syncopated rhythm. In this arrangement, Ralph Hicks brings the style to the percussion ensemble with light textures, flowing lines, and a gentle groove. The piece reflects the easy, expressive feel of Brazilian jazz and celebrates life’s simple joys.
7:00 - 9:00 PM
Concert Band Program Notes Genesis by James Curnow is a dramatic and expressive work inspired by the idea of creation. The music unfolds from a quiet, mysterious opening, gradually building in intensity as layers of sound are added and the full ensemble emerges. Interwoven throughout is the hymn “All Creatures of Our God & King”
The Hexagon by John Fannin is a driving and rhythmically charged fanfare that explores intervals and meters of a sixth. This work “grooves” through the utilization of shifting 6/4 meter and 6/8 meters and a heavy jazz-rock influence. Inspired by the geometric strength of its title, the piece is built on repeating patterns and shifting layers that interlock and evolve over time.
How to Train Your Dragon comes from the acclaimed film score by John Powell, known for its sweeping melodies and powerful musical storytelling In this concert band arrangement, Sean O’Loughlin adapts the cinematic music for winds and percussion, preserving its sense of adventure and wonder. The piece moves between moments of lyrical beauty and exhilarating intensity, reflecting the journey of friendship, courage, and discovery at the heart of the story
