Boy ‘oh’ Boy!!! I’m sure by now you’ve heard and seen the reports about what happened to Waller County Precinct 3 Constable Herschel Smith on a Houston, Texas freeway back during 2020. I know you’ve heard all about how he was disrespected and placed in handcuffs by his fellow members of the law enforcement community — right? Well, I’m not going to deal with that today. However, would like to remind you that, it’s imperative that we all understand, that what happened to Constable Herschel Smith back during 2022 on the side of Beltway 8 in Houston, Texas — how he was humiliated on the side of a busy freeway, is part of a larger systemic problem whereas Black people are concerned — placing him in handcuffs was meant to demean this honorable member of the law enforcement community, in my opinion. So, make no mistake about it – someone – somewhere wanted to see Constable Herschel Smith – PUT BACK IN HIS PLACE!!! Did it work? Nope – I don’t think so! If you know anything at all about Constable Herschel Smith – you know that he’s a fighter. Now, don’t you dare go back and say that I’m stoking racial tensions — fanning flames, or anything like that — please don’t do that. But do you believe for one minute that a white member of law enforcement would have been treated the way Constable Smith was treated by his fellow law enforcement brotherhood? Which brings me to another question: How free are we as Black people living in America? I mean really, what does being free mean? After all, the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution states, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Now, with that said, do you understand that “THE MODERN-DAY PRISON SYSTEM” is an extension of slavery? Sure, we need law and order in America – but we have to make sure that we don’t allow anyone to use their badge as a shield to enable them to further their racist agenda upon folks they are sworn to protect and serve — and yes, sometimes people who look like us are harder on us than folks in power from other races and ethnicities.. Now don’t get me wrong – there are a lot of great policemen and policewomen out there – but there’s also a bunch of bad ones that must be rooted. Again, I ask — HOW FREE ARE WE IN AMERICA? What does being free mean in these United States of America? “When I think of freedom I imagine all of the slaves and activists who fought and died for me,” says Constable Herschel Smith, the Precinct 3 Constable for Waller County, Texas.

These are pivotal times we’re facing as a nation. Our freedoms as American citizens are being trampled upon — and our constitutional rights as a free citizenry are seemingly under attack from all sides these days. So, to this end, please know and understand your rights as an American citizen. “I have the freedom and right to act and speak as I want without physical hindrance or enslavement,” stated Constable Smith when he took part in our “PROUD AMERICANS CELEBRATING FREEDOM EDITION” of Houston Business Connections Newspaper© back in 2019. I wonder how he feels about this statement after being shackled (I mean handcuffed) on the side of Beltway 8 in Houston, Texas back on Wednesday, August 19, 2020, by his law enforcement brethren. I wonder how it felt for this esteemed, Waller County Precinct 3 when he had to hold a news conference, to get his side of the story out. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Was he racially profiled by the 911 caller? Did Harris County Precinct 5 Constable Ted Heap have an ax to grind against Constable Smith? Whatever the case, Constable Smith says he was pulled over and handcuffed by deputies because he was racially profiled — shouldn’t his version of the occurrences of what happened be considered? “...to be free we have to break chains from the inside by freeing our minds from bondage and be bold enough to take that first step,” says Constable Smith. “What happened to me in Houston, Texas is unfortunate, but we’re going to deal with that very soon,” he explains. “We have a right to stand up for ourselves and what we believe in — I believe in the rule of law — and believe in equal justice under the law. I believe a person is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” says this law enforcement officer who has also been a community activist for more than 35-years. “Standing up for ourselves allows our light to shine so that others can imitate that power. As a veteran who served in the U.S. Army, I have seen good and indifference in people of all dimensions,” he says. “I now understand that we are so much more alike than different, but in most cases, our circumstances determine the outcome of the choices I make,” states Constable Smith. “I am empowered because I can make choices and face the consequences of my decisions — which is my responsibility,” he says. “So, at the end of the day, freedom for me comes from within. So let’s start there and not allow anyone to take that away from us.”

In case you don’t know, Judge Dedra Davis would have still defeated Republican Judge Brent Gamble in the race for Judge, 270th Civil District Court – even without the 105,158 straight-ticket voting cushion she received from Democratic voters in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election. Here’s why: Dedra Davis received 651,843 overall votes. When you subtract the 515,812 straight-ticket votes, you come up with 136,031 votes. Com-
paratively speaking, if you subtract the 410,654 straight-ticket votes, Judge Brent Gamble received from his overall vote total of 530,480 you come up with 119,826 votes. So, in essence, even if you stripped away the straight-ticket votes received by Judge Dedra Davis back in 2018 she would have still hypothetically unseated the incumbent by approximately 16,205 votes back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election in my opinion.

One of the things I love most about Judge Ronnisha Bowman is the fact that she is battle-tested. I mean, she just knows how to win. While she was the underdog in both of her 2018 contests, she (in my book) proved that she can stand on her own and duke it out with the best of them! Yes, she gained my respect back on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in the Democratic Primary when she faced off against fellow Democrat Harold J. Landreneau. While some doubted this rising “DEMOCRATIC STAR” she showed poise, grace, faith in God, and confidence in her ability to get the job done! And after the smoke had cleared, Ronnisha Bowman had amassed 74,045 votes for 53.07 percent of the vote while Landreneau fell short with 65.491 votes for 46.93 percent of the vote. But she wasn’t done! After taking out her fellow Democrat, Bowman turned her attention to the November 2018 midterms in what was supposed to be her toughest challenge – unseating the incumbent at the time, Republican Judge Bill Harmon. While many doubted her once again, calling her young and inexperienced, she took it all in stride and kept her eyes firmly affixed on her goal of becoming judge for Harris County Criminal Court #2. And in the end, her hard work, determination, tenacity,

So, when you hear uninformed folk say that straightticket voting is the only reason Democrats swept through Harris County, Texas back in 2018 – please share Judge Ronnisha Bowman’s inspiring story with them. After all, even if you stripped away every straight-ticket vote she received back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, she would have still hypothetically unseated the incumbent judge at the time by more than 18,403 votes in my opinion.

Experience In & Out of the Courtroom
The 315th Juvenile District Court handles two types of cases. Juvenile delinquency cases where youth, between the ages of 1017, has allegedly engaged in delinquent conduct. In addition to cases involving the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services (“CPS”), where there has been allegations of child abuse or neglect. I decided to run for judge because I want to be in a position to ensure that fairness & justice is given to everyone. Judges are the ultimate decision makers and those decisions are life altering. As a product of Harris County and the Foster Care System, I am too familiar with the fact that one decision has the potential to propel someone’s life towards success or disaster, as well as those connected to them. If elected, my decisions will be made by looking at each case holistically, while listening to each set of facts and applying the law with compassion based off of the information presented. My experience is not limited to the courtroom. I have the real life experience of a juvenile who has been a part of the system, something that a text book or law book cannot teach you. I also have the experience as an attorney representing the system & following the law. A judge should be a reflection of the community they serve. Because of these experiences, I am the right candidate to preside as judge the 315th District Court!

Judge Moore brings a Fresh Perspective to the Bench
I truly believe that all children need love. Adoption is a fundamental necessity in our society. According to openly published statistics, as of June 2017, over 2,386 children in Harris County were in foster homes. I intend to do everything within my power as Judge of the
314th Juvenile District Court to reunify families whenever it is safe to do so.
Judge Moore Has a Plan
I believe a three-prong approach is key when working with our troubled youth: rehabilitation programs (plus) mentorship (plus) education is my focus. I recognize being in a court of law can be very stressful. Knowing this, I treat every person who comes into the 314th Juvenile District Court with dignity and respect.

An event such as winning an election is life-altering. My team and I worked hard to win back in the 2018 midterms. I lost count of all the places I visited, meeting wonderful people like you.
