Establishedin2010atRiceUniversity’sChaoCenterforAsianStudies,the HoustonAsianAmericanArchive(HAAA)isdedicatedtopreservingthehistory ofHouston’sAAPIcommunitybyconductingoralhistoryinterviews,collecting documents,photographs,memorabilia,andartifacts,andsupporting teachingandstudentresearchonAsianAmericanlife.Asofnow,HAAAhas collectedaround500oralhistoriesthatcollectivelydemonstrateadiverse tableauofexperiencesrelatedtoimmigration,careerbuilding,education, militaryservice,racialdiscrimination,marriageandfamiliallife,musicaland artisticpursuits,religion,civicengagementandsocialjusticeorganizing withinHouston’sAsianAmericancommunity.Thearchiveisaparticularly strongresourceforunderstandingAsianAmericans’experiencesofthe COVID-19pandemicandthewaveofanti-Asianhatespeechandracial violencethateruptedin2020and2021.Manyoftheseinterviewsarefreely accessibletothepublicathaaa.rice.edu.HAAAcontinuestoconductoral historyinterviewsthatwillserveasinvaluableresourcesforfuture researchers,andactivelysupportsongoingresearchprojectsthatseek expandpublicawarenessofHouston’sAsianAmericanhistoryand community.Ifyou’reinterestedinhearinganoralhistoryinterviewor recordingyours,pleasevisittheHAAAinterviewpage.

JD DOYLE ARCHIVES
TheJDDoyleArchivesisatreasuretroveofdigitizedmaterialsthatdocumentHoustonand TexasLGBTQ+historyaswellasLGBTQ+musichistory HoustonhistorianJDDoylebegan thisendeavorin2000withQueerMusicHeritage,aradioshowandwebsitededicatedto preservingsharingtheworkofLGBTmusiciansandentertainers Whileliveprogramming ceasedin2015,QueerMusicHeritage.comremainsarepositoryforitspastshowsaswellas avastnumberofvideos,photographs,publications,andarticleswrittenbyJDaboutLGBT musichistory AlsoundertheJDDoyleArchivesumbrellaisHoustonLGBTHistory.org,a similarlykaleidoscopiccollectionofphotographs,publications,ephemera,andarticles aboutHouston’sLGBTQ+community,includingpastPridefestivals,localbusinesses, organizations,politics,events,andmore.There’salsoahealthysprinklingofmaterialsfrom elsewhereinTexasandthroughoutthenation.AthirdmajorprojectwithintheJDDoyle ArchivesistheTexasObituaryProject,asearchabledatabaseofthosewehavelost,with anemphasisonthoselosttoAIDS.Finally,JDDoyleArchivesmanagesTheBannerProject, apop-upexhibitaboutHouston’sLGBTQ+historycreatedbyboardmemberSara Fernandez.Theexhibitisavailablefororganizationstoborrowandispermanentlyavailable onlinehereandondisplayatTheMontroseCenter Thesheervolumeofmaterialonthesesitesisaremarkablefeatofcollaborative communityarchiving,astheJDDoyleArchivesBoardhasworkedcloselywithboth independentcommunitymembersandinstitutionalarchivestomakethematerials availabletoaswideanaudienceaspossible.Thesecollectionsaresosignificantthatthe siteswereselectedtobepartoftheLibraryofCongressLGBTQIA+StudiesWebArchive Toconclude,Ihavetomentionthesites’interfacesareincrediblycharming–withtheir large,brightlycoloredtextandfullyhomegrownHTMLcoding,theiraestheticsharkenback totheraucousearlydaysoftheinternet Houston,doyourselfafavorandgetlostinthis rainbowrabbithole.HappyPride,y’all!
