JUST A FEW HOURS

Singapore’s Changi Airport isn’t just an airport – it’s consistently voted one of the world’s best stopovers, and for good reason. Transferring is a breeze, with efficient staff, short queues, and easy terminal connections. But it’s the facilities that really steal the show.

Relax with a drink in the rooftop cactus garden, take a dip in the open-air pool, wander through the butterfly sanctuary, catch a movie, or even book a quick nap in one of the Snooze Lounges located between Terminals 1-4.

Known simply as KLIA, Kuala Lumpur International Airport is one of the world’s largest and most modern. Most of the airlines are housed under one roof, making it very easy when transiting. Stretch your legs in the spacious terminals, enjoy a pampering session at one of the airport lounges or spa facilities, or explore the art installations and gardens dotted throughout the airport.

Seoul’s award-winning Incheon International Airport is as captivating as it is fascinating. BARCELONA’S BEST VIEWS

A must do is spending time at Park Güell, architect Antoni Gaudi’s great creation and one of Barcelona’s iconic attractions. The world-renowned architectural masterpiece offers the best views of the city’s skyline and is arguably one of the world’s most impressive public parks with its flowing mosaic walls, and a captivating blend of historical and modern architecture. Also wander through the narrow lanes of the Gothic Quarter – go early morning before the crowds.

HOT TIP: Make sure you prebook your Park Güell entry tickets as they sell out weeks in advance. After your visit, why not indulge in one of the restaurants surrounding the park. Our pick is Restaurant El Clot, it’s great value and the food is delicious.

From sizzling tapas to rustic stews, Spain is a foodie heaven. In Madrid, Restaurante Botín holds the Guinness World Record for the oldest restaurant in the world, serving roast suckling pig since 1725! For a more casual bite, follow the locals into Mercado de San Miguel. Under its soaring glass roof you’ll find salty cones of jamón, buttery Portuguese egg tarts, frothy sangria and fresh-baked empanadas. It’s the kind of place where “just a snack” can turn into a long lunch.

HOT TIP: Your first few days in Spain can be a little daunting so pre-book a tapas tour before you go. A local guide will take you to a few of their favourite bars and show you how it’s done. Spin through Seville’s Feria de Abril in a swirl of flamenco dresses (arrive early to grab a seat for the parades), join the tomato-tossing chaos of La Tomatina in Buñol (waterproof shoes and goggles are a must!), or watch fireworks light up Pamplona during San Fermín (book a balcony spot for the best view). Every festival is full of music, laughter, and local flavour. Bring an appetite – you’ll want to sample tapas, churros, and street treats along the way.

HOT TIP: At Seville’s Feria de Abril, most of the thousand-plus casetas (decorated festival tents) are private and invitation-only, which catches many visitors off guard. Head to the information kiosk at the main entrance and grab a map showing the public casetas that are open to all – you’ll be dancing sevillanas and sipping rebujito with the locals in no time.

We travelled to Portugal as a group of ten – two grandparents, four parents and four children aged between four and ten. We wanted somewhere relaxed, but with room to explore when the mood struck, so we based ourselves in the charming old town of Albufeira with plenty of sunshine and the beach within easy reach.

Adriana Beach Resort was our home for the week and it was ideal for our extended family group. The rooms are arranged in blocks of four, so we could stay close without being on top of each other, and as it’s all-inclusive, there was no need for the usual conversations about where to eat or who was covering which bill. Choosing an all-inclusive stay meant meals were simple and budgets were predictable, which made a big difference with a group our size. There were plenty of food options, which kept even the fussiest eaters happy, and the grandparents loved how effortless it was to gather everyone together. The kids settled in instantly. Daily entertainment kept them busy, and aqua aerobics became the unexpected highlight of every afternoon. The beach was another crowdpleaser, with endless space to run, dig and swim. For the adults, the old town was the standout. Cobbled streets, small markets, port tastings and a beautiful beachfront made it a place we happily returned to.

Getting around as a group of ten was far easier than we expected.

My biggest tip: keep things simple. When we slowed down, our trip became more relaxed — more beach time, more wandering, and more of those small family moments that make a multi-gen holiday truly special.

Pam Turner from House of Travel Rotorua has completed Spain’s famed 800km hike and her stories are equal parts awe, adrenaline and absolute magic. She shares what it’s really like to travel along one of the most talked about walks in the world.

What exactly is the Camino?

Many people think of the Camino as the walk from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela, known as the French Way. It’s around 800 km long and usually takes 30 to 35 days to complete.

However, there are many other routes to choose from, such as the Camino Primitivo, the Portuguese Way and the Camino del Norte. It’s believed that the remains of St James are buried at the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, which is why pilgrims have been making the journey for more than 1,200 years. Today, people walk the Camino not only for religious reasons but also for the challenge, the adventure, the fitness and the time to reflect and disconnect from the outside world.

What made you decide to walk it?

I was inspired after watching the movie The Way starring Martin Sheen. The idea of setting out on a long walk, discovering new places and taking time to clear my head from everyday life really appealed to me.

How long does it take?

The full Camino usually takes around 30 to 35 days to complete, but if you only walk the final 100 km, you can do it in about a week.

What’s your opinion on the best section to walk?

It really depends on what you want to see. Many walkers love the first section from St Jean to Roncesvalles for its sweeping views across the Pyrenees and that powerful sense of accomplishment as you begin your journey. The stretch from León to O Cebreiro is also a favourite, with beautiful scenery, ancient Roman bridges and the famous Cruz de Ferro (the Iron Cross), where pilgrims leave a stone from home to symbolise releasing their burdens and worries.

I walked the final part of the Camino from Sarria to Santiago. It’s dotted with little cafés and takes you through peaceful farmland and charming villages. It’s the busiest section, but perfect for anyone short on time who still wants to experience the Camino spirit.

So which route do you recommend?

It’s hard to recommend just one, as each has its own charm. The Camino Francés is the most popular and offers a great mix of scenery, culture and pilgrim camaraderie.

The Camino del Norte has fewer walkers and follows a more rugged, off-the-beaten-path route with spectacular coastal views.

The Portuguese Way is a little more challenging, but much loved by those who complete it. It stretches about 620km from Lisbon or about 260km from Porto, depending on route.

There really is a Camino for everyone. It all comes down to how much time you have, how fit you are and what kind of experience you’re looking for.

What are the sleeping arrangements?

Along the Camino, you’ll find a mix of places to stay, from albergues (hostels) and pensiones (small guesthouses) to hotels in the larger towns.

You can choose the style that suits you best –a shared dorm in an albergue for a sociable, budget-friendly experience, or a cosy guesthouse with your own bathroom for a little extra comfort.

If time is limited, what’s unmissable?

The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is the heart and soul of the Camino, and watching pilgrims arrive in the square after weeks on the road is something truly special.

Just before reaching the city, stop at Monte do Gozo – the Mount of Joy – where you’ll catch your first glimpse of the cathedral’s spires. It’s a moment every pilgrim remembers.

What’s your top tip?

Arrange for porterage and have your backpack transported each day. It’s not cheating – it simply makes the walk far more enjoyable. With just a light day pack on your back, you can focus on the scenery, the people and the journey itself.

Hiking one Europe’s longest canyons. Start on the Omalos Plateau at around 1,200 m, then descend through forests, cliffs and ravines. Pass through the Iron Gates, the gorge’s narrowest stretch, wander past the abandoned hamlet of Samaria, and watch for the elusive kri-kri goats.

HOT TIP: Start early to enjoy the canyon in quiet serenity, and pause on the trail’s natural balconies – some of the best views are tucked away where few wander.

THE SENTIERO AZZURRO (BLUE TRAIL) CINQUE TERRE, ITALY

The Sentiero Azzurro stitches together five candy-coloured villages along cliff-hugging paths. Choose your favourite stretch: Monterosso to Vernazza for classic postcard vistas, or Vernazza to Corniglia for terraced vineyards, lemon groves and turquoise coves – or combine multiple sections over a day. The best part? Frequent pit stops for focaccia, antipasto, and a cheeky scoop of gelato.

HOT TIP: Finish with a hands-on cooking class in Levanto or La Spezia – fresh pasta, local olive oil, and regional wine make a delicious reward after a day on the trail.

The route begins gently, meandering past Alp Grialetsch (mountain lake dip, anyone?) before stepping up with long climbs.
