A Dorset Business, A National Honour British Fires marks its King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade with a reception at St James’s Palace, recognition for a company that has never moved far from where it started.

Focal Point Fires, the Christchurch-based manufacturer behind the British Fires brand, has been named a recipient of The King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, one of the highest accolades available to a British business, and one granted personally by the Sovereign. Michael Athay, Group Managing Director, attended a reception at St James’s Palace on behalf of the company, where he was received by His Majesty King Charles III. The King’s Award is not lightly given. Winners are assessed over a sustained period against strict criteria, and only a small number of businesses across the whole of the UK receive the honour each year. For a company that began in a workshop in Christchurch, Dorset, in 1983, the recognition marks the latest, and perhaps most significant milestone in a story built almost entirely on staying put and getting better at what it does.

Designer, stylist or interior enthusiast, for the past decade it’s all been about the cool greys, neutrals, clean lines, minimalist schemes and functional spaces. From paint finishes to hard furnishings, to flooring, a Scandi scheme has basked in the spotlight, with paler woods epitomising the modern minimalism. “I would say our most popular product for the past 10 to 15 years has been a kind of cooler smoky grey colour… and that’s where the shift happens,” says Paul Moody, Havwood’s global marketing and insight director. The greys are still there, “but it’s the cooler-looking greys, the neutral grey, quite functional aesthetic that’s drifted out… even with smoky grey, the warmer tones have had a resurgence. “It’s definitely that shift towards the warmer colours.” But it’s not necessarily the colour palette, or about it being a trend, notes Moody. “I think it’s been caused by a kind of behavioural shift. “People want something to feel different, and it just happens to be those warmer colours which best represent that shift.” From kitchens, to living rooms and bedrooms, think earthy tones, browns, tactile materials, natural timbers and soft warm hues, these are the prominent aesthetics now being reflected in the character of our homes.

We’ve seen it [wood] used on the interior of staircases and things, just to add that extra visual intrigue.” Specialising predominantly in European oak (the most hardwearing and sustainable option), he says current trends include ‘complimentary and contrasting’. “Picking two timber tones that look very similar, so you have a more homogenous-looking interior design,” explains Moody. “Or you can go for a complete contrast, almost like a mix and match, with something really light on the walls and something dark on the floors; or vice versa.” And with a choice of colour groups such as blondes, honeys, auburns and brunettes, it’s very much those warmer tones which are adding a feeling of warmth, influencing our decor – and helping us feel more grounded. Why is autumn the best season for a National Trust visit? As rising temperatures make autumn frosts increasingly rare in the South, displays of late summer colour in National Trust gardens are flowering for much longer into the year; throughout autumn and sometimes even into December. These floral shows are converging with more traditional autumn spectacles - harvests of fruit, brightly coloured squashes, rich bark and foliage – it’s a meeting of the seasons that provides a visual feast. As we’re surrounded by sea and the land is dotted with lakes, reservoirs and rivers, swimmers who fancy a dip in open water are spoiled for choice. But swimming in open water can be dangerous, so it’s wise to research where you plan to swim carefully before taking the plunge, checking things like conditions, currents and access. Earlier this year a report commissioned by the Sport and Recreation Alliance noted that while more than four million people try open-water swimming every year, the number of people regularly participating in the sport has more than doubled from around 266,000 adults in 2016-17 to 543,000 by 2023-24. LOUGHMACRORY LOUGH, COUNTY TYRONE, NORTHERN IRELAND Loughmacrory Lough by the village of Loughmacrory, near Omagh, is a natural freshwater lake which hosts Get Wet Stay Safe introductory open-water sessions. Water in the lough, which has a gradual depth increase, isn’t tested for swimming. The lake is around eight miles east of Omagh, near the Sperrin mountains. LLYN PADARN, LLANBERIS, NORTH WALES This 3km lake has the spectacular backdrop of the Snowdonia mountains and the 13th-century Dolbadarn Castle. It’s officially classed as an inland bathing water by Eryri National Park, and is regularly monitored for its high water quality. The water is 30m at its maximum depth, and Padarn Country Park officials warn swimmers to check the depth and terrain of the lake bed, as some areas may drop off abruptly, and avoid jumping or diving in, as there may be sharp slate below the water. To get to Llyn Padarn from Bangor, leave the A55 at junction 11, take the A4244 towards Llanberis, and continue onto the A4086.

Brothy Thai chicken and rice

SERVES 2 | PREP: 10 MINUTES | COOK: 20 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS

2 boneless, skinless chicken thighs

1. Pat the chicken thighs dry with kitchen paper/paper towel, then season with salt and pepper.

1tbsp Thai red curry paste 1 garlic clove, minced 2.5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated

2. Heat a drizzle of oil in a deep frying pan/skillet or shallow casserole dish over medium– high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 4–5 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.

300ml chicken stock 100ml oat or soy milk 1tsp soy sauce (GF: tamari) or ½tsp fish sauce

3. Reduce the heat to medium and add a touch more oil if needed, then stir in the curry paste, garlic and ginger. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant, then pour in the stock, oat milk and soy or fish sauce. Stir to combine and let it simmer gently for 5 minutes.

When it comes to creative legacies which continue to inspire and shape the way we live, Sophie Conran’s career has spanned cooking, tableware, wallpaper, textiles and bedding, with innovation in her DNA. The only daughter of designer and retailer, Sir Terence Conran – founder of Habitat and The Conran Shop – and half-sister to designer Jasper Conran, it’s fair to say she’s been at the hands of creativity since day dot. “I don’t remember the first photo shoot I was in because I was a baby, naked on a rug in a Habitat catalogue,” Conran, 60, tells the Press Association.

“So that side of it started a very long time ago. A self-confessed insomniac, Conran says she gets anxious if she doesn’t sleep well. “My world very quickly falls apart. “I’ve realised if I haven’t had the right amount of good sleep, everything just seems much heavier… I don’t cope with things as well and feel stressed. “We live in a very fast-paced society, we’re always scrolling on our phones, and there’s so much information being piled on us… I think that does take up your mental capacity if you’re surrounded by clutter.” Passionate about interiors and soothing atmosphere she aims to achieve in her designs, such as the Sophie Conran for Dreams Collection, she says: “I also think beyond just seeing.” “You’ve got all your senses, so it’s what you hear in your room. If you’ve got a lot of upholstery, it absorbs sound. So if you’re living in a kind of a box with metal and glass, that’s going to make a lot of noise.”

She continues: “If you have nice padded things, carpets and curtains, that will absorb sound. And then there’s what you touch… the quality of your sheets, softness of your pillow, what kind of duvet you’ve got, the comfort of your mattress.” Moreover, the designer who lives in a Grade II-listed Georgian manor house in Wiltshire, loves using colours and patterns inspired by nature – from soft florals, to muted greens and warm neutrals.

Wild swimming, hiking and oldworld glamour at celebrity-favourite Lake Como Lauren Taylor heads to the historic Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni and takes a dip in Italy’s most famous lake. I turn the corner to a parting in the trees and a first clear view of the expanse of still blue water from high in the hills. I’m hiking up to the Church of San Martino above the town of Griante, the zig-zag mule track eventually leading to the small white church perched on the edge overlooking one of Italy’s most famous glacial lakes – Lago di Como, Lake Como. Here in the Lombardy region in the north of the country, some 45km from Milan, it’s as unique in geography, as it is beautiful. Flagged on every side by mountains of the Southern Alps and the Lugano Prealps, this spot by the church shows it off in quiet, spectacular fashion. The lake, around 50km in length and one of Europe’s deepest at 425 metres, is formed in a distinctive, upside-down Y-shape. The town that sits smack bang in the middle of fork of the ‘Y, dividing the lake’s southern branches, is Bellagio – a name you might also recognise from Las Vegas’ most famous hotel and casino. This one, of course, was here first – 7th-century BC in fact. Perched at the edge of the town, in true prime position is the family-run Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni – the only five star in Bellagio and one of the oldest hotels on the lake. You can spot it from the top of this 3.8km hike, the lemonyellow building, which has stood in some form since the 15th century, lines of white and navy umbrellas against a blue pool, on the edge of the deeper coloured lake.

But Lake Como is perhaps best known as a summer escape for the famous – among them George and Amal Clooney, who own a lakeside 18th-century property in Laglio. Brad Pitt, Beyonce and Madonna are said to be among the throngs of A-listers who love this destination, while Taylor Swift and now-husband Travis Kelce visited in 2024. U.S president John. F. Kennedy, who apparently called Lake Como “The most beautiful lake in the world”, even slept in the room I’m staying in at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in 1963, the same year he was assassinated, and it was renamed in his honour. Now one of the hotel’s most requested, it is the epitome of grandeur, with magnificently high ceilings and two marble pillars in the bedroom. The sofas and chairs are adorned in red silk (Bellagio has a long history of being famous for ‘Como silk’, having produced it since the 1400s) and there’s a ‘pillow menu’ – yes, listing pillow options – next to the biggest bed I’ve ever slept in.

It features a room with a desk and chair where I imagine JFK sat and pondered the political and social landscape of the Sixties with a spectacular view of the lake – both ahead and to his left. This particular corner suite (the hotel has 22 suites, included in the 94 rooms) means double-aspect lake views, with a balcony off the bedroom too. It’s hard to imagine a better place for sipping espresso, or champagne. Old-world glamour has been well and truly preserved at this hotel, from the main ornate staircase, frescoed ceilings, vintage wallpaper, Murano glass chandeliers and gilded mirrors, to the piano in the lounge playing every night to sophisticated cocktail-drinking patrons. The main building was turned into a lavish home in 1854 and became a hotel in 1873, when additional wings were added – before the Bucher family took over in 1918. Three generations later, they still own it and live inside a private wing, which is perhaps why it’s held its authenticity. The entire place could be picked up and plonked back in another era with precisely the same timeless elegance.

For fine dining there’s Restaurante Mistral, renovated this year, and run by chef Ettore Bocchia known as a pioneer of molecular gastronomy, there’s a farm-to-table culinary take and the signature dish is peacock tortellini. But the food at La Goletta restaurant is as delicious in its own right and the breakfast is sensational. While there is a private beach club, I like to think the hotel’s famous previous guests Winston Churchill, Mary Shelley, Sofia Loren, Al Pacino and JFK also made their way down the steps directly into the crystal waters of Lake Como to enjoy a refreshing wild swim on a hot day. On several occasions, I swim out to a diving platform 15 or so metres out, just to sit and take in the beauty of it all. “You’re in the part of Lake Como everyone wants to come to,” one of the staff had mentioned, and it can feel that was as we see ferries full of visitors, peering off the side of the vessel before making the stop in Bellagio – known as the ‘Pearl of the Lake’.

How to style a cosy snug in modern homes As small ‘snug’ rooms enjoy a renaissance, interior designers give their advice on how to create this dedicated relaxation area.

Homes are a place to relax, and as the trend for openplan living takes a dive, the traditional ‘snug’ room is making a comeback. Interior designers say the snug, which originated as a cosy little room off the bar in 19th-century pubs, is becoming more and more popular, as homeowners look to utilise normally smaller spaces within their property as cosy, informal living areas, in direct contrast to the knocked-down walls and open-living spaces of the noughties. “After years of seeking ways to maximise open-plan living, there’s a palpable hunger for something altogether more intimate and sheltered in UK homes,” observes Gabriele Pittau, chief design officer at poltronesofà. “The snug – a small, warm and comfortable retreat – is experiencing a renaissance.” He says the snug reflects a very simple need – comfort, privacy and a place to properly switch off. “As this kind of space returns to modern homes, it gives people a dedicated area for relaxation again – something smaller, warmer and more personal than a formal living room.” And interior designer Verity Coleman, creative director of the interior design studio Rascal and Roses, says: “We’ve done quite a lot of snugs recently – people call it different things, so a few years ago loads of people wanted libraries, but ‘library’ was stretching it – it’s just a little space where people can relax, sit down and chill out. “I’d say there’s more of them now than there were maybe five years ago, because then it was all about open-plan living, and as open plan has become a bit less practical, now people are after smaller spaces again.”

HOW D O YO U ST YLE A SN U G? Choose your space You first need to identify the room, or section off an area of a big room, Coleman advises. This can often be a smaller room off a more formal sitting room area, or maybe off a dining sitting room, or perhaps at the end of a kitchen diner. “Sometimes if there’s a smallish box room downstairs or something like that, you can make that into quite a nice snug because you don’t need much space – you’re not going to have loads of people in there,” she points out. “Sometimes they’re rooms that don’t work that well if you’ve got guests, so the sofas aren’t facing each other, or you haven’t got room to do a layout that you’d do in a sitting room. A snug is quite nice because you can just use it with family.” Tone down the open plan If your home is open plan or has a big kitchen extension, it doesn’t necessarily mean a snug is out of the question, says Pittau. “While a snug can be created in any spare space or nook, this trend is especially visible in kitchen extensions,” he says.

“The modern kitchen-diner has become the real heart of the home, and as homeowners open up and extend these spaces, they’re increasingly setting aside part of the room for a more intimate seating area.” He says these snug areas often sit next to the kitchen, becoming natural gathering points within the home. “They’re connected to everyday life but still feel separate enough to offer a sense of retreat,” he says. “Less formal than the main living room, but often used more naturally. “From a design point of view, this is a very intelligent response to open-plan living. Instead of fighting the open layout, you can give it more structure by creating smaller, more comfortable zones within it.” And Coleman adds: “These days in many houses downstairs is just one room, so you need to cut something off on the end of it to make sure you’ve got one smaller space for a snug.”

How to furnish a snug Some people think a snug should be more of a reading nook, with no TV in it, but Coleman says she’d include a big TV in there. “You’d have a big telly, and lots of different kinds of lighting, so it’s like a more achievable version of a home cinema,” she suggests. “If it’s not carpeted, you want a rug in there, and you’d want to spend your money on soft furnishings – a nice sofa, cushions, maybe even floor cushions as well, or a footstool, plus curtains and a blind, so you can pull them down if you’re watching a film. Just make it quite soft and comfy – somewhere people want to chill out.”

Phil Spencer is the co-presenter, with long time TV partner Kirstie Allsopp, of the long-running Channel 4 series Location, Location, Location, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, Love It or List It and many other programmes. One of the best-known faces on British television he has published books, written regular columns and features for leading newspapers and lifestyle magazines. Phil was awarded an MBE for services to charity, particularly homelessness charity St Mungo’s for whom he has been Patron for over 20 years. He also likes cars! What’s your first motoring memory? Driving a tractor at about 14, a Massey Ferguson 135, which is perhaps no surprise being a farmer’s son. I do have a hankering for an old tractor but have no use for one so it’s impractical really, but a nice idea. What was your first car and at what age did you acquire it? My Grandmother’s Vauxhall Chevette automatic, in a dubious shade of brown! It was a pass-down car. Friends named it the ‘Shove-it’ as they thought they could push it faster than it would drive, it was so slow. What cars do you own now? We have a Jaguar F-Pace and a MINI John Cooper Works. When I was filming in New Zealand we had an F-Pace and I loved it. When I got home, I asked Jaguar if I could borrow one for a few days so that my wife could try it. We both liked the car Jaguar loaned us, so much so we asked if we could buy it and Jaguar said yes! My wife mostly drives the MINI but I do love it, it’s good fun.

I also have a Jensen 541 which was Dad’s car. He was a big fan of British engineering and also had a Jensen Interceptor FF. When he passed away, I got the 541, and my Brother had the Interceptor. He never really got on with it so sold it and bought another 541. We now have one each! I also have an MGC and, obviously being a farmer’s son, a Land Rover Defender! Approximately how many miles do you drive each year? Not as many as you might think because although I cover many miles, I’d never be able to function if I drove all the time. Most of my miles are in the back of a Mercedes Benz S-Class, very comfortable and spacious and I’ve had the same driver for years so it works well. Which is your ‘go to’ car for everyday use? The MINI John Cooper Works, but if it’s longer runs, holidays or a car full of people we’ll take the F-Pace.

Is there a particular car that you regret selling? A ‘J’ registered VW Golf GTi MK2 in oak green. I was doing a lot of driving in London and really needed an automatic to make life easier so bought a BMW 318i. What do you look for in a car? I like a slightly older car with higher specification, I’ve only ever bought one new car, back in 2005. It was an Audi S4 and I sold it not that long ago. If money was no object, what car would you buy? An Aston Martin DB5, to my eyes all Aston Martins are beautiful looking cars, but the DB5 would be my choice. Is there a particular car you aspire to own? A DB5! Would you consider buying an EV? No, I’m not ready for an EV yet, but the Polestar models look good and the Audi RS etron looks very nice.

What’s the attraction of classic cars and what is your favourite motoring era? Classic cars have to be driven, it’s more of an experience. Favourite era would be the 1950/60s as there were some great cars and I like the fact there were so many British cars too. Enzo Ferrari reportedly described the Jaguar E-Type as the most beautiful car ever made. What’s your most beautiful car ever made? DB5! Are you a polisher, tinkerer or a rebuilder with your classic cars? I would say a polisher and part time tinkerer. Thankfully I have friends with classic British cars who can fix things and almost relish a breakdown as it’s a chance to get the tools out!

The Car Man Matthew Bourne talks about the creation of The Car Man Why were you first attracted to Bizet’s Carmen? I resisted it for quite a while because there were so many versions of it, both ballet and opera, but I kept listening to the score and I felt that it was the right kind of music for my company, New Adventures. I also felt in 2000, when I made the original piece, that it suggested a different kind of movement than we had done before. It was particularly listening to the Shchedrin arrangement (the short 40–minute ballet version using only strings and percussion) which got me really excited and I thought, we’ve got to do this, we’ve got to use this music. But to stop myself, and probably everyone else, thinking, “Oh no, not another Carmen”, I thought, well, we’ll use the music but we’ll tell a different story and that’s what really inspired me and made the whole thing feel like a totally original project. I was also keen to create a “dance thriller”, full of plot twists and suspense. You can’t do that with a story people already know!

How does New Adventures’ The Car Man differ from the original Carmen? Quite a lot but there are parallels with the opera story; there are elements of lust, fate, revenge and murder and all those things that are associated with Carmen. I think the essence of Carmen is there, but we’ve set it in a different place and time. The Car Man is set in an Italian-American community in a small mid-western American town in the 1960. Although it’s set in the USA there is quite a European feel to the production and although there are some obvious American elements, we’ve tried to add a gritty kind of realism, associated with Italian, French and Spanish cinema, and to avoid Hollywood glamour.

So place is not so important, it’s the flavour and feeling of the period that matters? Well, we came up with a name for this fictional town, which is Harmony – it’s also by chance the name of several real towns in the States. I was looking for something charming like Pleasantville, a name that could become increasingly ironic as the story develops. The characters are very gutsy and real, requiring a whole different acting style from much of the New Adventures repertory. It was certainly a change of direction in 2000 following the royal court and lakeside fantasy of Swan Lake and the more genteel period feel of our war-time Cinderella. The Car Man has always been A piece that has challenged my company as actors too. The movement that came from this was also much more earthy and gritty and contemporary in feel. You could call it a classic film noir but one that tells a story that no film of that era would have been able to tell! In dance terms, 26 years on, it remains a comparative rarity, as the first ballet to depict bisexuality as a major part of the plot.

So why revive The Car Man In 2026? Apart from the special Albert Hall London revival in 2022 to celebrate the iconic venues 150th Birthday, the show has not been seen around the UK, on tour, for over 10 years. The Car Man has become one of New Adventures’ most popular productions since its creation in 2000. It’s also probably the most popular show amongst my dancers who all want the chance to play these challenging roles. There is now a whole new generation of talented New Adventures artists ready to take up that challenge and that has to be one of the other main reasons for bringing it back into the repertory in 2026. It’s a particular favourite of mine because it combines my great love of cinema with a highly theatrical approach. It also gives me a great excuse to revisit many of my much loved old movies for research! Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man comes to Mayflower Theatre, Southampton from 16–19 September. Roasted carrot pasta INGREDIENTS

SERVES 2

1. Preheat the oven to 220ºC/Fan 200°C/Gas Mark 7.

450g carrots (around 4 carrots), peeled and sliced into coins

2. Place the sliced carrots and onion in a large baking tray and drizzle with half of the olive oil.

Spicy tahini lime noodles SERVES 2

INGREDIENTS

190g thin rice noodles

1. Place the rice noodles in a large bowl and cover with boiling water. Let them soak for five to seven minutes, or until tender. Drain and set aside.

40g kale, destemmed and roughly chopped 1tsp toasted sesame oil

2. While the noodles are soaking, put the kale in a separate bowl, drizzle with toasted sesame oil and massage until it softens slightly.

2tbsp tahini paste 2tsp gochujang (or substitute with harissa paste)

3. In a small bowl, mix together the tahini, gochujang, soy sauce, lime juice, garlic and ginger to create a creamy dressing.

4. Add the drained noodles to the bowl with the kale. Pour the dressing over the noodles and toss everything together until well coated.
