NEW YOUTH THEATRE TO INSPIRE YOUNG PEOPLE AT LIGHTHOUSE
Providing a range of opportunities for young people to explore creativity, build confidence, make friends and have fun through drama, Lighthouse Youth Theatre opens for its first intake in September with spaces available now.
Led by a team of friendly theatre making professionals, the Saturday sessions at Lighthouse Poole follow an ambitious programme that building towards an amazing opportunity to perform on stage in front of family and friends as part of an annual showcase.
Lighthouse Youth Theatre also provides access to exclusive ticket discounts, backstage tours and specialised workshops. Participants will be part of the vibrant creative community at Lighthouse with the chance to meet other people who love performing and theatre.

Purbeck Film Festival returns for its 30th year with open-air screenings across Purbeck’s most extraordinary locations.
This summer, the award-winning Purbeck Film Festival is transforming some of Dorset’s most extraordinary locations into open-air cinemas - and celebrating 30 years of doing exactly that.
At Corfe Castle over the August Bank Holiday, audiences will watch films within the medieval ruins themselves, lit to reflect each title. Screenings include Paddington 2 and a Wicked-inspired evening, where marmalade orange, green and pink lighting will transform the ancient stonework. Visitors can also arrive by the Swanage Railway’s popular Sunset Shuttle - making the journey itself part of the night out.
At Knoll House Hotel in Studland, guests take their seats poolside to watch Jaws - Dorset’s own stretch of water standing
in for a certain infamous stretch of New England coast.
The Blue Pool provides a natural stage for Labyrinth, Jim Henson’s cult fantasy, its wooded banks lending the film a genuinely otherworldly atmosphere. Nearby, Careys Secret Garden hosts The Magic Faraway Tree in a real woodland clearing, opening the family’s enchanting, scented gardens to all.
The season opens on Saturday 15 August with a return to Langham Wine Estate, following last year’s sell-out event. The Blues Brothers - already one of the festival’s most popular nights - pairs its much-loved soundtrack with local wine in a setting that has quickly become a crowd favourite.
The festival closes at The Blue Pool with The Devil Wears Prada 2, one of the year’s most talked-about releases - a characteristically sharp final note.

OF CARE AND GROWTH
Dr Helen Medical is celebrating its first anniversary in Ringwood, marking a successful first year for the private GP and specialist clinic founded by local GPs, mums and friends, Dr Helen Evans-Howells and Dr Lexi Obee-Kendall.
Since opening in June 2025, the clinic has expanded rapidly in response to patient demand. It now offers private GP appointments alongside specialist services including ENT, paediatrics, women’s health, lifestyle medicine, dermatology, weight management, travel health and joint care.
The team has grown to more than 10 GPs and consultants, supported by eight staff, while the clinic has expanded to eight consulting rooms to accommodate its growing range of services. It has also strengthened its menopause and HRT support, with members of the team undertaking advanced British Menopause Society training.

LOCAL CHARITY ENCOURAGES MEN TO KNOW THEIR PSA SCORE
The Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO) is encouraging local men to think about their prostate health ahead of a community PSA testing event taking place in Bournemouth this September.
Prostate cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK, yet there remains no national screening programme. Around 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed during their lifetime, rising to around 1 in 4 for those with a close family history.
Since launching its PSA testing programme in 2011, PCaSO has facilitated more than 50,000 PSA blood tests and continues to support men and their families through awareness, education and support services.
Daniel Martin, Chairman of PCaSO Dorset Branch, said: “Most people know their weight, blood pressure and heart rate. We believe men should also know their PSA score. Understanding your risk and knowing your PSA score could make an important difference to your future health.”

Section 21 came to an end –The 31 July deadline landlords could not miss
For years, Section 21 was the route landlords used to regain possession of their property without having to rely on specific legal grounds. However, with the introduction of the Renters’ Rights Act, Section 21 was abolished for new cases, and 31 July 2026 marked the final deadline for landlords to submit court proceedings using any valid Section 21 notice that had been served before 1 May 2026.

meaning they had to begin the possession process again using one of the new Section 8 grounds introduced under the Renters’ Rights Act.
This represented a significant milestone in the private rented sector. From August onwards, Section 21 became history, with all possession claims needing to rely on the revised Section 8 process. Landlords were now required to demonstrate a valid legal ground for seeking possession.
At Move On, we had been preparing our landlords for the introduction of the Renters’ Rights Act for many months. Although Section 21 had now been consigned to history, we continue to help landlords navigate the new legislation, understand their responsibilities and protect their investments in an increasingly regulated rental market.
If a landlord had served a Section 21 notice before 1 May 2026 and their tenant had not vacated the property, simply having the notice was not enough. Court proceedings had to be issued by 31 July 2026. Those who missed the deadline found that their Section 21 notice was no longer valid,
For any landlord who had an outstanding Section 21 notice, it was essential to ensure court proceedings had been issued before the deadline. Those who failed to do so faced further delays, additional costs and the prospect of starting the possession process from the beginning.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL: BUY-TO-LET LANDLORDS NEED TO BE READY
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is transforming the way landlords report their income to HMRC. If you own buy-to-let property, it’s important to know when the new rules will affect you and what you need to do to prepare.
The introduction of MTD for Income Tax is being phased in based on your combined gross income from property and selfemployment.
From 6 April 2026, landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 will be required to comply with Making Tax Digital.
• From 6 April 2027, the threshold reduces to over £30,000.
• From 6 April 2028, it falls again to over £20,000, bringing many more buy-to-let landlords into the new system.

Instead of submitting one annual Self Assessment tax return, landlords within MTD will need to keep digital records using HMRC-compatible software, submit quarterly updates to HMRC and complete a final end-of-year declaration. The aim is to improve the accuracy of tax reporting and help taxpayers keep on top of their finances throughout the year.
If you currently keep paper records or only update your accounts once a year, now is the time to review your bookkeeping systems. Preparing early will make the transition much smoother and reduce the risk of errors or missed deadlines.

Dr Helen Allergy is celebrating its fourth birthday, marking four years of specialist allergy care, clinical innovation and compassionate support for families living with allergies.
The Ringwood clinic was founded by GP and allergy specialist Dr Helen Evans-Howells after her son, Ethan, experienced a serious allergic reaction to milk during weaning.
“One moment we were introducing a new food and the next I was a first-time mum holding my baby as he reacted,” said Dr Helen. “Despite being a doctor, I felt utterly helpless. It changed the course of my life.”
Determined to give families the knowledge and reassurance she had needed, Dr Helen retrained in allergy, completed a Master’s degree and worked with the Southampton Allergy Team before opening her own clinic.

As demand grew, the service moved to larger premises in Ringwood and became the UK’s first clinic dedicated to delivering allergy care for both adults and children.
Today, Dr Helen Allergy supports patients from across the UK and Ireland through a multidisciplinary team of allergy specialists, dietitians, specialist nurses and psychological support. Many team members also have first-hand experience of allergies, either personally or as parents.

The clinic offers evidence-based treatments including oral immunotherapy, known as OIT, which carefully introduces controlled amounts of an allergen under specialist supervision to build tolerance and reduce the fear of accidental exposure.
It became the first UK clinic to offer immunotherapy to adults for food allergens beyond peanut and, with international collaboration, the first UK centre to provide sublingual immunotherapy to both adults and children.

How to make the humble jacket potato delicious, according to Anthea Malialis
Cheap, comforting and easy to make – should we all be eating more jacket potatoes?
It wasn’t too long ago that jacket potatoes were considered an unfashionable and unimaginative dish, relegated to the bottom of the league of British dishes.
But now the humble spud is having a moment in the culinary spotlight thanks to social media, with even Waitrose reporting a 178% increase in searches for jacket potatoes on its website last year.
Among those driving the comfort food’s comeback is Anthea Malialis, a higherlevel teaching assistant turned cooking influencer, otherwise known as the “Jacket Potato Queen” for her viral jacket potato topping recipes, such as hog roast dinner and creamy garlic king prawns.
Under the handle @superhomecook, the 45-year-old has amassed a following of 673k on Instagram, 438k on Facebook and 165k on TikTok since starting by posting pictures of her family dinner in the garden several years ago.
But it was when she published a jacket potato recipe that the mother-of-three’s social media truly blew up. “It went absolutely mental, like over a billion views easily,” she recalls.
Now, though, on reflection, Malialis isn’t surprised the internet’s attention was captured by the spud as they’re “budgetfriendly, comforting and easy to make”.
How to cook the best jacket potato
While there is lively debate about the best cooking method for a jacket potato, the key to the comfort dish lies in the potato itself, according to Malialis.
“You’ve got to have the best potato,” she says. “I’ve tried all the different supermarket potatoes, but I always come back to the same one, and that’s Tesco’s loose baking potatoes. It just works every time. It’s golden, crispy and soft in the middle.”
As for her go-to cooking process, Malialis bakes her potatoes in both the microwave and air fryer. She starts by piercing the potato and wrapping it in a kitchen towel before heating it in the microwave for six to eight minutes, depending on the size, at 200°C.
“I feel like I’ve come up with so many different topping ideas; it [proves] the jacket potato doesn’t have to be boring,” adds Malialis, who’s produced a cookbook, Super Home Cook, featuring many of them.
Not one to gatekeep the secrets of perfecting the jacket potato, Malialis shares her top tips, from how to cook the best spud to the quickest toppings for time-poor home cooks.
Next, once the potato has cooled, she seasons it with olive oil and salt, covers it with tin foil and then bakes it in the air fryer at 180°C for 45 minutes. After removing the tin foil, she continues cooking the uncovered potato in the air fryer at the same temperature for a final 10 minutes to finish the “perfect” jacket potato.
Quick and easy jacket potato toppings
Jacket potatoes are already a quick meal, but you can cut even more time by batchcooking toppings, Malialis says. Instead of cooking the portion you need for one meal, consider doubling the amount and storing the rest in the freezer for later use.

Wowing dinner party guests with jacket potatoes
“Put the portions in a Ziploc bag, flatten it down and put it in your freezer and it’ll last up to three or four months,” Malialis says. “With leftover curry, they taste even better the next day, so if you freeze it and defrost it, it would be even better.”
If you’re really strapped for time, Malialis suggests cold toppings to eliminate the cooking process entirely. Tuna or chicken and sweetcorn mayonnaise are Malialis’ top picks for easy-to-assemble but delicious toppings.
“They’re so easy to put together, particularly if you have a leftover rotisserie or roast chicken from a previous day,” she says.
Malialis goes as far as to say that her chicken sweetcorn mayo recipe is her favourite from her cookbook. “It reminds me of my school days,” Malialis says, perfect for those wanting a taste of nostalgia with their meal.
There is a misconception that jacket potatoes are only suitable for a speedy lunch or dinner with family, as they can make an excellent dinner party dish, according to Malialis.
But rather than serving singular jacket potatoes to guests, Malialis suggests creating a jacket potato traybake. “I put around six in a tray and then cover them with a topping like chicken alfredo or Philly cheese steak,” she says.
Not only is this a crowd-pleaser, but it’s easy to whip up before guests arrive, meaning you can spend more time in their company rather than labouring in the kitchen.
The biggest mistake made by home cooks Malialis feels that home cooks are missing a trick by not exploring their spice and herb cupboards to elevate both jacket potatoes and other meals.
Malialis says different seasonings can add unique flavours to otherwise bland meals.
“It doesn’t have to be boring. You can get a piece of chicken breast and season it with your heart. It might not work, but it might be the best meal you’ve ever made. Just don’t be scared. That’s what I do; I literally just wing it,” she says.
Malialis recommends always keeping seasonings like Adobo, oregano, mint, thyme and pimento seed in your kitchen to jazz up meals.
Even if your fridge is empty, Malialis says you’ll likely have all the ingredients for a snack or a meal in your store cupboard, so you won’t need a trip to the shops.
“I’ve put things like pesto and sun-dried tomato in a pitta bread, brushed it with olive oil and some herbs, then fried it,” she says.
“You could also put in some leftover chicken or cheese, if you have it, and it literally takes like pizza but for half the price and is done in seconds.”

SERVES 2 | PREP: 20 MINUTES | COOK: 70–80 MINUTES
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark six. Pierce the potatoes all over with a fork. Brush them with olive oil, season with sea salt, then wrap them in foil and bake for 50–60 minutes. Remove the foil and cook for another 15 minutes, to crisp the skin.
2. Meanwhile, season the chicken with Italian herbs, garlic granules and a drizzle of olive oil, then pan-fry until golden and fully cooked.
3. Let it cool, then slice, mix with four tablespoons of the Caesar dressing and set aside.
4. Cut the pitta bread into small squares. Spray them with olive oil and season with Italian herbs. Put them on a baking tray and bake them in the oven for six minutes. Set aside.
5. Once the potatoes are done, cut them open and mash the inside with the garlic butter. Season with salt and pepper, and grate over some Parmesan. Spoon over the Caesar chicken mix. Add some iceberg lettuce, crispy bacon and the pitta croutons, and drizzle with the rest of the Caesar dressing. Finish with an extra grating of Parmesan.
6. Serve immediately for the perfect crisp, creamy, cheesy bite!
Spicy taco beef sweet potato with hot honey
SERVES 2 | PREP: 15 MINUTES | COOK: 45-60 MINUTES
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark six. Pierce the sweet potatoes all over with a fork. Rub them with olive oil and salt, then bake them for 45–60 minutes until soft. You can also air-fry them.
2. Meanwhile, in a pan over a medium heat, cook the beef until browned. Add the taco seasoning, tomato purée, paprika, garlic powder and adobo seasoning. Stir and cook for a few more minutes until combined and fragrant.
3. In a small bowl, mix all the hot honey ingredients together. Stir well. For easier drizzling, you can warm it in the microwave for five to 10 seconds.
4. Once the sweet potatoes are done, cut them open and add the butter and mozzarella. Pile on the beef filling, and top with diced avocado and the cottage cheese.
5. Drizzle generously with the hot honey and finish with rocket. Serve, adding extra chilli flakes if you like more heat.

1 onion, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
125ml red wine

30g chopped parsley, plus extra to garnish

For the béchamel:
2tbsp butter
2tbsp plain flour
300ml milk
1 bay leaf
100g mozzarella, grated
50g Cheddar, grated
50g Parmesan, grated
SERVES 2 | PREP: 15 MINUTES | COOK: 65-75 MINUTES
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark six. Pierce the potatoes all over with a fork. Brush them with olive oil, season with sea salt, then wrap them in foil and bake for 50–60 minutes. Remove the foil and cook for another 15 minutes to crisp the skin.
2. Meanwhile, brown the mince in a pan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic, and cook until softened (about five minutes). Add the wine and allow it to cook off for five minutes, then stir in all the rest of the ingredients except for the butter and simmer for 20 minutes until thick. Season with salt and pepper.
3. For the béchamel, melt the butter in a pan over a medium heat, stir in the flour and cook for one minute.
4. Gradually whisk in the milk, then add the bay leaf and simmer until thick, stirring constantly. Remove the bay leaf and stir in half the mozzarella and Cheddar. Season with salt and pepper.
5. Put the potatoes in an ovenproof dish. Open them up, add the butter and fluff the insides with a fork. Layer first with the bolognese sauce, then with the béchamel.
6. Top with the rest of the cheese, then put into the oven for five minutes until golden. Garnish with parsley.

Why everyone is going for pops of butter yellow in their homes this season
Yellow might be a tricky colour to wear clothing-wise, but when it comes to homewares and interiors, you can’t go wrong with buttery hues.
If you have an eye for interiors and caught episode one of Paapa Essiedu and Keeley Hawes’ new Channel 4 drama Falling, you may have spotted the delectably softyellow convent kitchen they have their first ‘moment’ in. We won’t say those buttery cabinets were a total scene stealer, but spiked with a hint of saffron, we did swoon over more than just the actors’ performances.
However, “kitchens are tricky ones. You want them to blend in, don’t you? You don’t want them to shout,” says Lara Clarke from Lara Clarke Interiors. “I’m not sure I would do a full kitchen in yellow, unless it was a small kitchen, because it could potentially date.” That said, “it can be beautiful in a pantry or utility room; it can really lift the room.”
In recent decades, yellows have been blandly held hostage in nurseries and school classrooms (yellow is thought to help boost learning and memory skills), but primrose tints are now thoroughly escaping into the rest of our homes, and even into the garden.

“Traditionally, if you look back at the history of interiors, yellow has been quite a prominent colour in drawing rooms,” notes Clarke. “People are coming back to those historical colours.”
“A lot of things trickle down from fashion in interiors, and I think it’s come from there,” she says of the trend. Butter yellow was all over the spring catwalks at Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Loewe and Chloé. “The reason people are loving it is because it’s a happy colour. People are moving away from cool colours and towards anything with a warm undertone that gives you that sense of joy in a space.”
A pop of yellow also has the ability to really perk you up. “If you have a yellow sofa, it puts a smile on your face, and people are craving that more in their interiors. They want it to be an expression of them, they walk into a room and it makes them feel happy,” says Clarke.

So where should you start if you’re hesitant about going full-on yellow? “Fabrics, because you can add and take away cushions and accessories,” says Clarke. “You could put a yellow trim on a curtain or a blind, which is a subtle way to introduce colour. For people that are a bit more brave, try it on woodwork.”
For those unafraid of going a little canary, and are keen to paint walls, Clarke is a particular fan of the “creamy buttery yellows, so Farrow & Ball Dorset Cream or Yellow Ground, really pretty colours. I’m actually doing a utility room in Madeleine by Little Greene, which is a really lovely colour. It’s that warm, not too-in-your-face yellow.”

Clarke says it is possible to take things “too far” if you’re not careful. “There’s obviously a huge trend on colour drenching at the minute, and I probably wouldn’t colour drench a room in yellow. That’s a step too far,” she notes.

THE BULL AT BURFORD
For a livelier romp on countryside living à la Rivals, The Bull at Burford offers a great stay in one of the region’s most picturesque towns, only a 40-minute drive away from Oxford.
“Visitors will find a quintessential but buzzing English high street and a warm, welcoming feel wherever you go,” says Young.
It’s ideal for those who want the charm of the Cotswolds without feeling too remote – with shops, cafés and traditional pubs all within walking distance.
The Bull itself is a 16th-century coaching inn that has been reimagined as a boutique hideaway. Now owned by media executive Matthew Freud, the 1536-built property retains its characterful, slightly wonky exterior, staying true to its heritage on Burford’s sloping high street.
Inside, however, Freud has filled the space with an extensive personal art collection, with works displayed throughout giving it the feel of a relaxed, lived-in gallery.

If you’re anything like Danny Dyer’s Rivals character, Freddie Jones, you may be wanting something more modern and contemporary. If so, Culls Cottage is a stylish retreat that perfectly combines the cosy, countryside of the Cotswolds with an up-to-date touch.
Haynes highlights Southrop as a destination in its own right: “famous for its Grade I listed 12th-century church, beautiful stone buildings, village green and The Swan –a 17th-century pub – all within walking distance.”
The cottage itself pairs minimalist interiors with a large garden and has won Gold for Self Catering Accommodation of the Year 2024/25.
For something a little different, Haynes suggests trying a flamingo pedalo along the nearby River Thames.

Cowley Manor is recommended if you’re looking for a couples’ retreat, where days can be spent between the spa, indoor-outdoor pool and expansive gardens, or simply relaxing in the glass-walled pool area overlooking the grounds.
Evenings centre around the restaurant, where rich interiors and seasonal menus create a the ultimate romantic setting.

LAVENDER COTTAGE IN STOW-ON-THE-WOLD
If you’re planning to explore multiple villages, Stow-onthe-Wold is one of the best bases in the region. “I’d say Stow-on-the-Wold is hard to beat,” says Young, “[as] it offers convenience, character and a great all-round base.”
Haynes agrees, noting that towns like Stow and nearby Chipping Norton – famous for being the location of Former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson’s Farm – offer “boutique shops, historic pubs and scenic walks”, while surrounding villages such as Lower Oddington and Kingham provide a quieter, more authentic feel – often with some of the best pubs in the area.
This centrally located townhouse, sleeping six, puts all of that within easy reach.
For a classic Cotswolds day out, Young suggests visiting The Fox at Oddington for a pub lunch, or trying countryside pursuits such as Cotswold Valley Clay Shooting at Luckley Farm House for a truly luxurious, Rivals-inspired stay.

Bringing vacation-inspired vibes into your home is easier than you think, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
A sunseeker’s dream, recreating your heavenly escape in your own living space has its rewards, especially from a wellbeing angle – holidays make us happy!
But the reality can be a bit daunting when trying to nail the right aesthetic; sometimes the temptation is to overthink it, and end up getting bogged down with the finer details. The good news is, interior designers suggest you don’t need a passport to capture the feeling of a favourite holiday destination at home.
From the tropical calm of Bali to the indoor-outdoor flow of Florida, designers suggest destination-inspired ideas are less about the exact recreation of a place –and more about borrowing the colours, textures and atmosphere that make it feel memorable.

Here, tastemakers share their pro tips to get the look at home…
Italy… focus on texture, not accessories
Caroline Couzens of Caroline Couzens Design, a multidisciplinary, award-winning interior designer and ceramist, created an Italian-inspired kitchen and dining room which combines old-world grandeur with contemporary living.
The sun-baked terracotta, olive greens, arched windows, patterned tiles and a bold red range cooker create a warm and inviting space made for cooking and gathering.
For Couzens, the starting point is texture. “Think about textures and surface finishes, what sparkles, what absorbs. Material richness starts from the get-go… it’s not about adding cushions at the end.”
This could be limewashed walls, stone surfaces, zelligestyle tiles (Moroccan mosaic tiles), aged timber, marble, plaster, ceramic lighting or woven seating.
She says the key is to think about how materials behave in the light and how they sit next to each other. Colour should feel warm, layered and liveable. Couzens used earth tones as the foundation, then added jewel colours in a way which feels rich without overwhelming the room – keeping the majority of the scheme neutral makes it easier to update over time.
The designer also encourages homeowners to embrace eclecticism. Rather than buying everything from one range, she suggests mixing old and new pieces, such as a contemporary table with antique ceramics; a traditional dresser with modern lighting; or a bold tiled splashback with simple cabinetry.
The result should feel collected, not overly coordinated. An Italian-inspired room has space to evolve, with objects, artwork and furniture gathered over time.

Bali… make it a full sensory experience
For Camille Mongeon, founder of Bleu Canard Design, with a background in fine arts and antiques, and lifelong passion for interior design, a Bali-inspired home is not only about adding tropical plants and choosing dark wood.
She suggests the whole experience should feel immersive. “A tropical oasis isn’t just a look, it’s a full sensory experience,” says Mongeon, who imagined warm, humid air, a cooling breeze, linen drapes lifting gently, the sound of air moving through dense leaves and reflections of water dancing across the walls.
To achieve the look, she recommends blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Largeleafed plants, such as bird of paradise, can instantly create a more tropical feel, she highlights, especially when layered with long, flowing linen curtains.
Moreover, the Bali-inspired design uses saturated turquoise, rich woods and emerald foliage to create the feeling of a Balinese jungle retreat.
Materials are key, too. Mongeon suggests mixing lighttoned stone with dark, warm woods in furniture and finishes, then adding contrast with small accents of black and warm gold.
A dramatic wallpaper, large tapestry or living wall can help anchor the space and bring in texture, particularly if it draws on a palette of off-whites, deep greens, dark browns and watery blues.
Water is another important element. While a pool may not be possible, she says a trickling fountain, water feature or even an aquarium can create the same sense of calm.
Moreover, scent can also help complete the effect, whether through incense, a diffuser or tropical notes such as ylang-ylang.
Her final advice is to avoid making the space feel too polished. Noting antique markets are a good place to look for South Asian-inspired furniture, silk cushions, artwork and decorative pieces that bring personality and authenticity.

Florida… connect indoors and outdoors
Kristin Parr, owner and principal designer of Anna Gray Designs, brings a background in fashion and luxury branding to her interiors.
She looked to Marco Island in southwest Florida for her coastal concept, focusing on the region’s screened lanais (outdoor living space) and water-facing homes. “This design is about the continuous experience of coastal living,” explains Parr.
In the Florida-inspired space, a large opening connects the living room, kitchen, dining area and pool terrace, creating one continuous environment. The design uses warm wood tones, layered neutrals, tactile materials and low, sculptural furniture to create a calm, elevated take on coastal style.
Parr’s advice is to treat indoor and outdoor spaces as one connected experience rather than separate areas. Suggesting large sliding doors, French doors, or even a clear view through to the garden can help.
Continuity is important, too, use similar tones, materials or flooring colours across adjoining spaces so the transition feels seamless.
Indoors, she says to keep the palette restrained with warm neutrals, soft whites, wood, stone and tactile textiles.
In the open air, think about creating zones for lounging, dining and entertaining, even in a small garden or patio.
An outdoor kitchen or bar may not be realistic for every home, but she says the same principle still applies – make hosting feel easy. A compact BBQ area, weatherproof dining table, good lighting and comfortable seating can turn an outdoor space into a holiday-style extension of the home.
Parr also recommends using greenery architecturally. Instead of scattering plants at random, she says to line them up to frame a view, soften a boundary or add privacy without closing the space in.

Nantucket… keep coastal style elevated Megan Vogeler-Lappan, associate designer at Flourish Interiors, brings a degree in fine art and an associate’s degree in interior design to her work.
She turned to the island of Nantucket, off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, for bedroom inspiration and a breezy coastal sophistication.
The design highlights pale blues, creamy whites, warm wood, stripes, natural fibres and crisp architectural details to create a bedroom which feels fresh, calm and pulled together.
Vogeler-Lappan says she “leaned into layered neutrals, tailored upholstery, woven textures and crisp architectural details”, with nods to East Coast elegance, Hamptons polish and classic Nantucket style.
To get the look, begin with a soft coastal palette. Think sky blue, warm white, sand, oatmeal, pale grey and natural wood. Stripes work well, but suggests using them with restraint… on an armchair, rug, cushion or headboard rather than everywhere at once.
She goes on to say natural fibres are essential. For example, a woven bed frame, rattan chair, jute rug, linen bedding or grasscloth-style wallcovering add depth.
Meanwhile, tailored details, such as wall panelling, neat upholstery, crisp lampshades and well-framed artwork keep the space feeling smart.
The mood should be relaxed but intentional, with a focus on light, texture and craftsmanship. A single artwork which references the sea, paired with beautiful bedside lamps and generous pillows, can be enough to bring in the holiday feeling.

“Across all four looks, the strongest holiday-inspired interiors are not about copying a destination too literally,” underlines Kiya Kelly-Paine, home design trends expert at Houzz, who specialises in trends and how people are improving their homes.
“They are about identifying what makes that place feel special, whether it’s Bali’s lush sensory calm; Italy’s material richness; Florida’s indoor-outdoor ease; or Nantucket’s crisp coastal polish.”
“Start with atmosphere, then build through colour, texture, light and layout,” she suggests. “Even small updates, from a water feature or linen curtains to woven textures or terracotta tones, can help make everyday rooms feel more like somewhere you would choose to escape to.”
Kelly-Paine continues: “Visualising those ideas in 3D can also help you see how colours, materials, layouts and finishing touches will work together before making changes in real life.
“Giving you greater confidence in creating your own staycation-inspired space.”

The UK rental market has entered a new era with the introduction of Assured Periodic Tenancies (APTs), replacing Assured Shorthold Tenancies as the standard form of tenancy agreement. The changes have placed a greater emphasis on compliance, tenant selection, and long-term tenancy management, encouraging landlords to take a more considered approach when letting their properties.

Q&A with Eamonn O’Dwyer, Composter & Lyricist
What was your first experience of Rachel Bright and Jim Field’s book The Lion Inside?
My partner Andrew and I read it together on the sofa! I remember thinking that the story was so charming and relatable, and the illustrations so vivid, that I couldn’t wait to get to the piano to start writing the songs.
Tell us about the creative process working with adapter and director Sarah Punshon
Lots of voice messages! I would often send ideas for lyrics over a voice note whenever things popped into my head – in the middle of the supermarket, or walking to a rehearsal – and we’d have a little back and forth about a story beat, or a particular word or meaning. It was brilliant to work with someone who was as eager to discuss the minutiae of every moment as I am!
What do you think Sarah has brought to the live stage adaptation?
Sarah has an amazing eye for detail and a huge sense of fun; I think she’s captured all of the humour and heart of Jim and Rachel’s story and added some hilarious and very human touches that bring the whole show to life. It’s been such a joy collaborating with her.
How did the characters inspire your musical choices?
In a story about finding your voice, Sounds of the Wilderness seemed the obvious place to start, with all its buzzing and mooing, crowing and cawing – and because we’re all children at heart – farting! When Sarah and I first chatted, we talked about basing the Lion on Tom Jones (!), but when we met with Jim Field he told us that his illustrations had been inspired by Elvis, so I immediately went for a bluesy 1950s feel.
Mouse’s loneliness in the show is really heartbreaking at times, but James Keningale has made mouse so
beautifully optimistic that I really wanted to capture that in the little major key waltz that he sings.
Tell us about the range of instruments you used for the orchestrations
The orchestrations are a big mash-up of all the above influences; I’ve mixed traditional African instruments like marimba, kalimba and djembe with upright bass, jazz sax and vibraphone, and while Lion is always backed by his blues band, Mouse is often represented by an accordion – perky yet plaintive, and something of an outsider on the wide African plain.
When writing a new song, do you begin with the music or with the lyrics?
It really depends! Sometimes lyrics will come first, especially if they’re really story-driven or if you find a nice turn of phrase; but sometimes I’ll just sit at the piano and noodle until I find a good groove or a hook and build from there.
You’ve written music and lyrics for a number of musicals, how do you approach creating music for children’s theatre?
In exactly the same way, really: you think about story, mood, emotion and you try to breathe musical life into that particular moment. When writing lyrics for children or young people, it’s about making the music and the message instantly accessible and incredibly clear, but without being over-simplistic. You want your audience to understand the song as soon as they hear it, but still feel like they’re entering a rich and exciting musical world.
Who was your favourite author as a child?
I absolutely loved CS Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia. I’ve always loved anything that transports you to a new, magical place… and I still do!
What do you hope audiences will take away from this production of The Lion Inside?
I hope everyone enjoys the adventure - and will leave humming the tunes, of course!

The authors first met 10 years ago, their friendship flourished and led to them writing their first first book together in the time of COVID, Scandi Rustic.

“A porch’s visual impact begins at street level, where the architectural lines of the structure complement the character of the main house.”
He says a cohesive design ensures the porch feels like a natural extension of the building, rather than an afterthought. “Consider the interplay of materials and colours,” advises Threlfall.
For homes with traditional red brick, he says incorporating timber accents or a classic composite door in muted heritage tones, such as sage green or anthracite grey, can introduce a sense of timeless elegance.
With newly constructed homes, he says clean lines, expansive glazing, and sleek aluminium fixtures create a minimalist aesthetic “that exudes high performance, cutting-edge design and sophistication.”
He also highlights the transformative role of lighting to enhance a porch’s external presentation. While the harsh glare of a security floodlight serves a practical purpose, he says it often lacks the subtlety required for a welcoming entrance.
“Instead, consider statement lanterns framing the doorway or discreet recessed downlights in the soffit. These choices cast a warm, inviting glow that accentuates the architectural features of the porch,” highlights Threlfall. “Creating an ambience of safety and hospitality as night falls.”

Function meets flair
While your entrance has to bear the brunt of daily movement, try not to fall into the trap of it becoming a dumping ground for shoes, shopping bags, coats and wet umbrellas.
“The transition from outside to inside should be seamless, with the decor of the porch offering a subtle preview of the interior design found within the property,” suggests Threlfall.
With flooring laying the foundations for this seamless flow. “Encaustic tiles with geometric patterns can inject personality and a touch of Victorian grandeur.
“While natural stone or high-quality porcelain offers a sleek, durable finish that withstands heavy footfall without compromising on elegance.”
By continuing a colour palette or material theme from your hallway into the porch, he says “it draws the eye inward, making the house feel more spacious and cohesive.”
Depending on your budget, he also suggests cleverly designed joinery or furniture such as a slim table or integrated storage solutions.
Think a bench or built-in cupboard to keep things clean and tidy.
Glazing makes a statement too, contributing to its performance and style. “High-performance glass ensures the space remains thermally efficient, acting as a barrier to keep the main house warm in winter… and cool in summer.

GENESIS GV60 –QUIET REFINEMENT THAT WOULD PUT A LIBRARY TO SHAME
Genesis is the first book of the bible – it was also a rock band to those of a certain ageand means the origin, creation, or beginning of something. I’m pretty sure the bible played no part in Hyundai’s decision to create a luxury arm for their cars. Genesis is though, a pretty good name for a new marque.
Launched in Europe back in 2021 the company still has a long road ahead, if you’ll excuse the pun, when you look at Toyota and Lexus and the time it took them to gain a foothold. Genesis sales in Europe haven’t hit any high numbers but then five years in the overall scheme of things isn’t a long time.
The company has announced a new performance model, the GV60 Magma and is moving towards more advanced electric and hybrid models. In GV60, which was the first Genesis model designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle, there’s much to praise with a very useable kilometre/mileage range across all model
versions and a sensible rather than exhaustive list of model options. As with all Genesis models the premium quality and feel puts many more established car makers to shame.
Three versions are on offer – Pure, Sport and Performance – with prices starting from £54,115. Power outputs range from 229PS up to 490PS with corresponding times of 7.8 seconds to a mere 4 seconds to pass the benchmark 62mph. The leadin Pure car has a single motor rear wheel drive configuration with the Sport and Performance versions opting for dual motors and all-wheel-drive.
Standard equipment across the board is excellent and includes heated seats and steering wheel, powered, heated and folding door mirrors, navigation, keyless entry and start, auto dimming rear view mirror, wireless phone charging, dual zone climate, power tailgate, auto lights and wipers, smart cruise, power seats, Android Auto and Apple Car Play plus a heat pump.
Inside there’s good space even if the rear is a little cosier than some rivals, the super comfortable quilted seats offer good adjustment and support and the whole interior oozes premium quality. Externally the GV60 is a good-looking car, to this writer, and is not the usual rather formulaic designs that seem to pervade the showrooms nowadays.
On the road the refinement is again top notch and while my GV60 was the lead-in Pure the handling and general performance doesn’t leave you feeling short changed. It’s no sports machine but offers all you need with the added bonus of comfort and a hushed interior that would put a library to shame. If you’re looking for a thinking person’s EV then the GV60 ticks all the boxes.
VOLKSWAGEN ID. POLO - MUCH MORE THAN A CITY CAR
Volkswagen has revealed the new ID. Polo and thus the all-electric version of one of the most successful models in its history. With over 20 million sold, the Polo is now entering a new chapter. Developed in Wolfsburg, VW says the ID. Polo combines clear design, generous space and high quality with an attractive entry-level price starting from £21,690 euros (in Germany). A range3 of up to 282 miles and the new Connected Travel Assist, including automatic traffic light recognition, onepedal driving and vehicletoload function that turns the ID. Polo into a mobile power source for devices such as ebikes.
The ID. Polo will be available with three output levels with 85 kW (116 PS), 99 kW (135 PS) and 155 kW (211 PS). The 85 kW and 99 kW versions will be equipped as standard with a 37 kWh battery. This battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in about 23 minutes at DC quick-charging
stations and offers a range of up to 329 km. The 155 kW drive is powered by a 52 kWh battery that enables ranges of up to 454 km and can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in about 24 minutes at DC stations.
The ID. Polo is available in Germany in the three equipment lines: Trend – entrylevel version with features such as LED headlights incl. main-beam control, Digital Cockpit with 10-inch display, a multifunction steering wheel in leatherette and automatic air conditioning.
Life –with adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera system, park distance control (front) and front cross traffic assist. An automatic anti-dazzle interior mirror and electrically folding exterior mirrors with memory function additionally ensure greater convenience. Digital features such as voice control, App Connect for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as an inductive charging function for smartphones are also standard.
Style – top-of-the-range version with LED matrix headlights, illuminated VW logo at the front and rear, steering wheel and seat heating, as well as two-zone automatic air conditioning, are also part of the premium equipment.

LEXUS LBX – SMALL, ECONOMICAL AND PRACTICAL IN A PREMIUM PACKAGE
Having been writing about all things automotive for a very long time I have been lucky enough to attend many press launches. I well remember the launch of the Lexus LS400, which was the first Lexus to arrive in the UK, back in 1990. It was a revelation in so many respects due to the power, smoothness and refinement of its engine, the luxury and the impeccable build quality. It was no understatement to say it shook the established European premium car makers.
For those not aware Lexus is the upmarket arm of Toyota and over 35 years since it launched Lexus remains a top flight player in terms of quality and reliability. Their range has expanded somewhat and now encompasses a broad range of models including the small, premium LBX SUV.
It carries the underpinnings of the Toyota Yaris Cross and designed to be both an entry point to Lexus and also attract younger buyers. It is more than a mere re-badge though, as can be seen from its quality and more sophisticated look and feel, both inside and out.
Prices start from £29,995 with all models in the line-up being self-charging hybrids with a 136 bhp, 3-cylinder, 1.5-litre petrol engine and a choice of either front or all-wheel-drive. Standard fare across the range includes high beam assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, heated, powered and folding door mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control and Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The higherlevel models can increase the specification to luxury car level standards.
On the road the Lexus is a smooth and refined drive, unless you push it hard when the usual CVT automatic gearbox characteristics (any CVT not just Lexus) of briefly high revs, before everything catches up and calmness resumes, rears its head. It is most un-Lexus-like. The secret is smooth and progressive acceleration, you soon pick up the knack, and when you do it’s a nice drive. There’s a lot of seamless switching between electric and petrol power and a lot of the time it’s difficult to tell whether the engine has actually kicked in such is the refinement, especially at low speed.
It’s no sports SUV but you can enjoy a brisk drive along mildly twisty cross-country routes and in normal daily use it’s a nice place to be whether commuting, doing the shopping, the school run or a long-distance holiday drive. If you want small, economical and premium, then the LBX might just be the answer.
GEELY STARRAY –NOT QUITE A STAR BUT CERTAINLY A PROTOSTAR
Few people with even a vague interest in cars can have failed to notice the number of Chinese brands appearing everywhere, I can’t recall a time when so many new names have appeared on the motoring market.
One of those new names, Geely, isn’t actually that new and has already been a presence, certainly in the UK, for some years. The company owns British sports car name Lotus, Volvo and EV garagemate Polestar, they even own the company making iconic London Black Cabs.
In addition to some new models under their own name they also own a brand called Zeekr, stylish and sporty it’s already appeared in Europe and I suspect it will be a hit in the showrooms when it drives onto our shores.
Geely currently has the EX5, a pure EV, and then the Starray, a petrol hybrid, which shows how clever the Chinese car industry has been in not pursing a totally electric route. They have recognised that for many people EVs don’t work at the moment.
The Starray uses a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine with a single motor driving the front wheels. The three-model line-up has two versions with an 18.4 kwh battery and a top-line model with larger 29.8kwh battery. There’s a potential 51 miles of pure electric range, with the larger battery delivering an impressive 84 miles.
Standard equipment is excellent even on the lead-in model and prices start at £29,990. From a style point of view the Starray is pretty much standard fare for SUVs these days with no outstanding features, and no dreadful ones either. Inside it’s pretty much the same story but the fit
and finish is noticeably good throughout with tactile finishes and doors that close with a reassuring thud.
I’d like to say the switches work the same but they’ve pretty much been made extinct. A large central touchscreen of excellent clarity can’t take away the pain of having to dip into menus for so many functions. Even opening the sunroof. And while on the subject of annoying some of the ADAS safety systems interfere constantly and even the shortcut button requires more touches than its name suggests.
On the road the Starray is built for comfort and delivers, with three driving modes, in electric or hybrid drive it’s smooth and refined. It doesn’t deliver the accelerative kick of a pure EV but is more than capable. Handling is pretty decent too for such a large and softly sprung car, and the many bumps and potholes are soaked up with ease.
Starray is the perfect example of high quality, well equipped and comfortable motoring that will appeal to anyone looking at value-for-money family transport. The promise of more economical motoring without the range anxiety.
VOLVO XC40 - CLASSY STEP INTO ELECTRIC DRIVING, WITH THE COMFORT OF A PETROL TANK
It’s a sign of SUV dominance, not mention the volatility, of the car market that a couple of years ago Volvo announced they were ending the sale of estate cars in the UK. Volvo not selling estate cars! Less than a year later they relented and you can still buy a new V60 estate. The fact remains though that the SUV isn’t losing its appeal anytime soon, and Volvo’s array of SUV models is comprehensive to say the least with nine examples offering full electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid power.
The XC40 mild hybrid SUV is an impressive entry to Volvo’s line-up with prices starting from £35,860. Four trim levels plus a Black Edition model offers a very good array of standard equipment including wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise, heated front seats, dual-zone climate, front and rear park assist with rear view camera, powered heated and folding door mirrors, auto dimming rear view mirror, auto lights and wipers, power tailgate plus Apple Car Play and Android Auto.
In top-line Ultra trim, with more powerful engine, such as my test model, a panoramic roof, 360-degree camera, rear privacy glass, leather upholstery and a semi-auto foldable tow bar and a premium Hardon Kardon sound system that sounds like an orchestra in-your-car, are among the extras for your £43,960. Both engines are 2-litre mild hybrid petrol units with one developing. 163hp, the other 197hp. Both are driven through a 7-speed automatic transmission taking power to the front wheels. Even the lead-in engine is more
than adequate with the benchmark 62mph passed in 8.6 seconds and nearly 43 mpg in combined driving.
Volvos do tend to be just very nice places to be whether the journey is short or long with a tactile quality that makes them feel a cut above most rivals. There’s plenty of passenger space and from a driving point of view a good range of seat adjustment. A real feeling of refinement adds to the Volvo’s premium feel and even the worst our roads can offer is soaked up with little upset to the XC40’s equilibrium. It’s no sports machine but the handling, despite the softer more comfortable ride, still has a crispness when pushing through the bends.
They may no longer be big into estate cars but the XC40 makes an excellent case for moving into a Volvo. With such a premium feel, high equipment levels and a classy ambience, the XC40 is a good way of stepping into electric driving, while retaining the comfort of a petrol tank.

The arrival of the summer holidays often brings hectic schedules filled with childcare, social plans and sunny days, which make it very easy for exercise to slip down the priority list. However, staying fit this summer doesn’t need to be difficult or time consuming. In fact, sometimes the simplest exercises can be the most effective.
Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or just getting started, here are five easy exercises to try this summer that can make a big difference to your mood, strength and health…
SQUATS
“Squats are great because they help you build lowerbody strength,” says Sam Quinn, personal training lead at Nuffield Health. “They work the quads and glutes, which are two of the biggest muscles in the body.”

He highlights that the great thing about squats is that the movement is transferable in everyday life.
“This squatting movement pattern is used in daily life, like picking things up from the floor, for example,” notes Quinn.
Start with your feet shoulder-width apart. “As you squat down make sure that your quads are parallel to the floor,” advises Quinn. “Keep your torso nice and upright and keep looking forwards.”
It’s also an exercise that can be easily scaled.
“If you haven’t done squats before you might want to start with chair squats,” suggests Quinn.
For this you do the same movement and slowly lower yourself until you lightly tap a chair and then stand back up again.

PLANK
“One of the most simple but most effective core exercises is the plank,” says Quinn. There are lots of different variations you can try.
“It’s a really easy and accessible exercise because you can do it on your knees, on your elbows, or on your hands,” says Quinn.
“You can also make it more difficult by coming into a side plank or by adding in shoulder taps or foot raises.”
Don’t let your hips sink down and try to avoid sticking your bum up in the air.
“I would recommend doing the plank on your elbows to start with because it gives you a nice stable base,” advises Quinn. “Lay on the floor in a prone position (lying face down) and support your body weight on your elbows with your arms straight out in front of you.
“Then take the weight through your feet with your knees off the ground, and make sure that your body is parallel to the floor.”
LUNGES
“Lunges are great for single-leg strength and core stability,” says Quinn. “You can do forward lunges or reverse stepping lunges.”
Regardless of the type of lunge, your feet should remain hip-width apart to maintain balance.
“Keep your torso up and step one foot forward and lower your body until both knees are bent at a 90° angle,” says Quinn.
Your back knee should hover just above the floor, and your front knee should track directly over your ankle without extending past your toes.

“Start with your feet hip-width apart and hinge forward at the hips,” instructs Quinn.
“Put your hands on the floor, and then slowly walk yourself out, and then walk yourself back up to a standing position.”
This exercise gives you a great balance of upperbody strengthening and lower-body stretching at the same time.
“The inchworm will be predominantly targeting your hamstrings, but it’s also going to help your upper body as well,” says Quinn.
“It’s definitely going to help with the flexibility and strength of your hamstrings.”

“If you want to make a noticeable change to your upperbody strength or the appearance of your upper body without any equipment, I would recommend doing some press-ups,” advises Quinn.
“It’s quite an easy, accessible exercise that works out your shoulders, arms and chest.”
Try to maintain a rigid, straight body line from head to heels. “You want a nice and straight back, and for a full rep you want to make sure that you’re getting within a fist width away from the ground,” says Quinn. “Little quarter reps are not going to be as effective for getting the stimulus that you want, so make sure you go all the way down and do full reps.”
Similarly to planks, it’s a very scalable exercise. “You can start on your knees and then progress to a full pressup,” suggests Quinn. “You can gradually increase the amount of repetitions that you’re doing, or can increase the angle or elevate your feet.”

Nokx Majozi’s journey from ‘joke within the community’ in South Africa to successful chef
Rising star Majozi says making a career as a chef was considered an unusual career path – but now she’s seen as an inspiration.
Born and raised in South Africa, chef Nokx Majozi says she was initially viewed as a “joke within the community” for wanting to study cookery and hospitality as this was not familiar to those around her.
However, she pursued her dream and has since worked as a chef across the world, sharing her “joy” for cooking, and wants to help bring the cultures and influences of South African cuisine to kitchens everywhere.
She is now seen as an inspiration within her community back home and has released a new cookbook, The South African Cook Book: Authentic flavour-packed recipes from Cape Town to Durban.
“I always believe my story begins at home,” Majozi tells the Press Association.
“I want to transport people to where I come from, to the beginning, and to inspire the young women or the young chefs in South Africa that, sometimes, the beginning may not be great, but look at me now.
“I want to tell a story that there are so many things that you can go through, but home is always home.”
Majozi, who now lives in London, was inspired to cook by watching her parents in their home kitchen in Durban, located on the on the east coast of South Africa.
She says her mother’s cooking was “traditional”, but her father’s was “more elevated” with influences from other countries, thanks to his overseas connections and food exchanges at the harbour where he worked.
She loved her mother’s dumplings and her father’s fish curry, describing these as some of her parents’ “specialities” growing up.
“When I was having that moment with my dad when he was cooking, I was chopping or doing something to help him, that’s
when I realised you can take something so simple and elevate it,” she says. “That’s how my love of cooking started.”
Majozi soon knew she wanted to make this her career, but she says her family and the local community were not familiar with studying cookery and did not “believe” her at first.
She continued: “I realised I just want to learn. I just want to go to college and learn how to cook – and that’s where the problem started.
“My family didn’t believe, or they didn’t know, that you could spend time in college and learn how to cook, there was nothing like that. They said, ‘No, that’s not a course’.
“Even the community, it was very difficult to explain this to them. I was like a joke within the community, like, ‘You don’t know how to cook’.
“It was like a failure from your parents, that they didn’t teach you how to cook.”
Majozi was determined, however, and she studied at college for three years before working in a four-star Hotel in Durban called Riverside – and this is where she got her name Nokx, short for Nokuthula.
She then moved to the United States after being recruited by Disney to cook South African cuisine at its Florida resort, and she described this opportunity as “amazing”.

“I never actually knew until I started to travel and I realised, ‘Oh, this is from Australia, this is German, this is Polish food’… it’s multicultural, South Africa, and the food as well.”
“We can talk about food any time, with any stranger, and when you’re cooking and people are enjoying your food, for me that is just the best thing ever. It puts a smile on my face in a different way.”
For those wanting to cook South African food at home, Majozi advises people to have maize meal (similar to polenta), tomatoes, a chutney such as Mrs. H.S.Balls, rice and a medium curry powder.
She says the salads are a great place to start in the cookbook for beginners, along with the mango chicken wings or the Malva pudding, which is “South Africa’s answer to sticky toffee pudding”.
Sharing her main hope for her cookbook, she adds: “I just want people to be able to cook something that they’ve never tried before.
“That’s when the community and everyone started to understand and say, ‘Wow, this can get you a job, you can go overseas’, and I was the first one in the community to do this,” she says. “It was something very rare, especially where I come from, for someone to go overseas for work.”
After moving to the UK in the early 2000s, Majozi says she worked at the InterContinental London Park Hotel and The Pie Room at the Rosewood hotel in London, before recently joining the team at Fallow as the chef in residence.
She was selected as one of Jay Rayner’s Rising Stars in 2022, has appeared on Sunday Brunch and James Martin’s Saturday Morning and has been featured in numerous publications.
Majozi has now released a South African cookbook – something she “always dreamed of making” – and says she loves transporting people to different places through food. “Our food is very vibrant with colour, it’s got bold flavours – we are not scared to go for it – and it’s very diverse and inspired by different people,” she says.
While many of the recipes in the cookbook are traditional and “authentic”, Majozi says she wanted to make them “accessible”, with many of the ingredients available at local supermarkets or through Amazon.
She says each recipe has a story behind it and she believes adding a small “twist” to a recipe – whether incorporating a new ingredient or tweaking an original recipe –can make a “huge difference”.
Two of her favourite meals in the book are bunny chow, a type of street food, and the seven colours meal, which she says “represents togetherness, family and a celebration of food and heritage”.
Speaking about why she loves cooking, she explained: “It’s a joy. You can have the same ingredients, but you can do 20 or 60 things with them.
“The beautiful thing is the more you work with different people – especially in London, you have different people of different countries and culture – there’s so much you learn from them.
“Not a lot of people know about South African food, but with this book, it can help people try something new, understand our culture and our food, and how food varies across provinces when visiting.
“Everyone knows about wine, but we can’t forget about the food – pair the wine with some food.”

INGREDIENTS
60g unsalted butter
60g panko breadcrumbs
Small bunch of parsley, chopped
Small bunch of lemon thyme, leaves picked
1 lemon, zest and juice
35g Parmesan, finely grated
4 butterfish steaks (or black cod fillets)
1tbsp vegetable oil
Sea salt and black pepper
INGREDIENTS
1 free-range chicken, about 1.5kg
For the peri peri marinade:
10 bird’s eye chillies, deseeded
4 garlic cloves, peeled
2 red peppers, deseeded and roughly chopped
1 red onion, roughly chopped
Large bunch of coriander, roughly chopped
Large bunch of basil, roughly chopped
1tbsp dried oregano
3tbsp smoked paprika
120g olive oil
2 lemons, zest and juice
Sea salt and black pepper
Baked butterfish with herb crumb SERVES

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C. In a small pan over a low heat, add 30 grams of the butter. Remove from the heat as soon as it has melted and leave to cool for a few minutes.
2. In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, parsley, lemon thyme, lemon zest, Parmesan, the justmelted butter and a good pinch of pepper.
3. Season the steaks with a little salt on one side. Heat an oven-proof frying pan over a medium–high heat, add the oil and place the steaks seasoned side down into the pan. Fry for about four to six minutes until there is a good colour on the underside of the fish, then take the pan off the heat.
4. Using a spatula, carefully turn over the fish so the cooked side is facing up and divide the breadcrumb mixture between the four steaks.
5. Place the pan in the oven for five minutes until the herb crust is golden. Transfer the fish onto individual plates.
6. Add the remaining 30 grams of butter and the lemon juice to the pan and use a wooden spoon to scrape up any toasted bits of fish and herb crust. Drizzle the lemon-butter sauce over the fish to serve.
Grilled peri peri chicken SERVES 4
1. Start by making the marinade. In a food processor, put the chillies, garlic, peppers, onion, coriander, basil, oregano and smoked paprika and blend until smooth. Stir in the oil, lemon zest and juice and salt and pepper, to taste, until combined.
2. To spatchcock the chicken, turn it breast side down on your chopping board. Using kitchen scissors, cut along both sides of the spine and discard. After removing the backbone, place the chicken breast side up. Press down firmly to flatten. Pat the chicken skin dry using a piece of kitchen paper and season with salt and pepper.
3. Put half the sauce into a dish large enough to hold the chicken. Add the chicken and coat well with the peri peri sauce, then cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least an hour, or ideally overnight.
4. Light the braai 30 minutes before you want to cook. When you’re ready to cook and the coals are hot, lightly brush the grill with oil. If you can adjust the height of your grill, raise it to a medium height, otherwise move your coals to one side and place your chicken away from the coals so it cooks slowly.
5. Place the chicken on the grill, skin side down for 20 to 25 minutes, then turn and baste with the remaining marinade. Grill until the juices run clear, turning every 10 to 15 minutes. It should take around 50 to 60 minutes in total.

INGREDIENTS
2 carrots, grated
125g butternut squash, peeled and julienned
1 red pepper, deseeded and julienned
¼ green cabbage, such as Hispi or Savoy, thinly sliced

100g baby spinach, thinly sliced
5 radishes, thinly sliced
20g parsley, chopped
60g mixed seeds, such as sunflower, pumpkin, linseeds
For the dressing:
1½tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 lemon, zest and juice
3tsp runny honey
3tsp Dijon mustard
6tbsp olive oil
Sea salt and white pepper
“This rainbow salad is a showstopper in every sense,” chef Nokx Majozi says. “It’s packed with every colour of the vegetable spectrum, from crisp peppers and radishes to leafy greens and shredded red cabbage, as well as Hispi cabbage, also known as pointed cabbage or sweetheart cabbage, whose leaves are delicate and sweeter than regular green cabbage.
“I love how it’s not just a feast for the eyes, but for the taste buds too. Each veggie brings its own crunch, freshness and flavour, and the tangy dressing ties it all together beautifully.
“This is the salad I make when I want something vibrant, healthy and guaranteed to brighten up my day. Every bite feels like a celebration of what nature has to offer.”
1. Start by making the dressing. In a blender or bowl, add the cider vinegar, lemon zest and juice, honey and mustard. While the blender is running or you are whisking by hand, slowly add the olive oil in a thin steam until it’s all incorporated. Season to taste with salt and white pepper.
2. In a large bowl, mix all the vegetables, the chopped parsley and the seeds.
3. Drizzle over the dressing and toss to coat everything thoroughly. Serve on a large platter.
