From cutting carbon emissions and reducing waste to adopting sustainable procurement practices and promoting greener travel, the awardees have demonstrated that quality care and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
While proud of the Silver Award milestone, the charity says its sustainability journey will continue, with further work planned to reduce waste, improve energy efficiency and review clinical practices across the hospice.

Saffery’s Bournemouth office has announced a hat-trick of internal promotions, reflecting the firm’s continued investment in homegrown talent. James Woodward steps up to Audit Manager, Edward Holly to Assistant Manager, and Katie Taylor to Senior Manager, three welldeserved recognitions of outstanding contribution and commitment.
James and Edward both joined Saffery 4½ years ago; James from Bath University and Edward from Southampton University and have quickly made their mark on the team. Katie, meanwhile, brings 12 years of Saffery experience to her new role, having joined from a smaller accounting practice and grown with the firm ever since.
Roger Wareham, Partner and Head of the Bournemouth office, said, “These promotions are a real statement of what we’re about here in Bournemouth. We believe in backing our people and giving them the platform to thrive: James, Edward and Katie are brilliant examples of that in action. Our office is growing, our client base is growing, and it’s because we have a genuinely exceptional team around us. I wish all three of them huge congratulations.”

Celebrating its tenth year, there was only one band who could headline the multiaward-winning Poole Harbour Festival – I Predict a Riot hitmakers Kaiser Chiefs!
With bigger stages and next-level production on all three main stages, this year’s festival confirms its position as the south’s best family live music experience with stellar headliners, a re-energised DJ lineup, no fewer than 15 top UK tributes and the best local talent, as well as a full weekend of free kids’ entertainment.
“We love it when a plan comes together,” says festival organiser Serena Wren. “Kaiser Chiefs were always first choice for our tenth anniversary so there’s even more excitement than usual this year. Add to that live sets from M People’s Heather Small, East 17 and Scouting For Girls, with the likes of Groove Armada, Leeroy from The Prodigy, and Artful Dodger on the decks, and we’ve got a record-breaking bill to take us into our second decade.”
Up to 15,000 music fans and families are expected to attend the three-day festival on Baiter Park from Friday 31 July to Sunday 2 August and with Early Bird tickets already snapped up, demand for tickets is already high.

The long-awaited Renters’ Rights Act 2025 is no longer on the horizon—it is here. As of 1st May 2026, the lettings landscape has fundamentally changed, with further measures still to be phased in. For landlords and tenants alike, this marks one of the most significant shifts in the private rental sector in decades.

At the forefront of these reforms is the permanent abolition of Section 21. Often referred to as the “no-fault eviction” route, this mechanism previously allowed landlords to regain possession of their property without providing a reason. That option has now been removed entirely. Moving forward, landlords must rely on Section 8 notices, which have been expanded with additional grounds. The key takeaway is simple: every repossession must now be justified with a clear and lawful reason.
Equally transformative is the end of Assured Shorthold Tenancies. From 1st May 2026, all existing and new tenancies have automatically converted into Assured Periodic Tenancies, regardless of any remaining fixed term. This introduces a new structure for ending tenancies. Tenants are now required to give a minimum of two months’ notice, which must align with their rent due date. For example, if notice is served on 15th May and rent is due on 25th May, the tenancy will end on 24th July. Landlords, on the other hand, must generally provide four months’ notice unless the tenant is in breach, in which case shorter notice periods may apply.
Another critical compliance requirement is the Renters’ Rights Act Information Sheet 2026. This must be served on all tenants

by 31st May 2026. Failure to do so could result in civil penalties of up to £7,000. It is essential that landlords not only serve this document but also retain clear evidence of how and when it was delivered.

The Act also introduces a robust framework of financial penalties designed to drive accountability and fairness across the sector. Civil penalties include fines of £6,000 for discrimination against tenants with children or those receiving benefits, £3,000 for failing to specify rent in advertisements, £4,000 for accepting offers above the advertised rent, and £6,000 for attempting to end a tenancy informally or verbally.
More serious offences carry even greater consequences. Misusing possession grounds—such as claiming intent to sell or occupy a property and then re-letting it within the prohibited 12-month period—can result in fines of up to £25,000. Knowingly allowing overcrowding in an HMO may incur penalties of £20,000, while breaching a banning order can lead to fines as high as £35,000.

In this increasingly regulated environment, the role of a professional letting agent has evolved from optional support to essential partnership. A reputable agent offers far more than tenant sourcing—they provide expert guidance on compliance, ensure

best practices are followed, and safeguard your investment against costly mistakes.
Perhaps most importantly, they offer peace of mind. As legislation becomes more complex and enforcement more stringent, having a knowledgeable professional managing your property allows you to focus on the rewards of ownership rather than the risks.
The Renters’ Rights Act is not something to fear—but it is something to prepare for. Those who act now, educate themselves, and align with experienced professionals will be far better positioned than those who delay.
The sector is changing, and professionalism will define success. The real question is: are you ready?

On a bright summer afternoon in Poole, the sight of thundering hooves against a backdrop of sea and sky feels both exhilarating and faintly surreal. Yet the arrival of polo on the sands of Sandbanks is not a novelty act; it is the latest chapter in one of the world’s oldest and most evocative sports. As SandPolo prepares to thunder into its 19th year, it is worth pausing to consider how a game once played by warrior kings has found such an at-home rhythm on Dorset’s shoreline.

Polo’s story begins far from the English coast. Historians trace its origins back over 2,000 years to Persia, where it served less as leisure and more as military training. Cavalry units honed speed, agility and horsemanship with a bat and ball, learning to manoeuvre as one with their horses. From there, the game travelled along the Silk Road, enjoyed by emperors in China and maharajas in India, before eventually arriving in Britain during the colonial era of the 19th century.
The British gave the sport many of the structures we recognise today. Clubs were formed, rules standardised, and polo evolved into the fast, elegant contest associated with summer lawns, crisp whites and champagne on the sidelines. At its heart, however, the essence of polo remained the same: skill, bravery, teamwork and that unique partnership between horse and rider.
That partnership is often underestimated. While the players may take the headlines, seasoned polo aficionados know the true stars wear horseshoes, not helmets. The polo ponies, a bit of a misnomer, as many stand well over 15 hands, are extraordinary athletes. Bred specifically for speed, balance and intelligence, they are trained to accelerate, spin and stop with breathtaking precision. In many ways, they are the gladiators of the modern arena, and a great pony can transform a good player into a formidable one.

Traditional grass polo is played with four riders to a side on a vast pitch, often stretching over 300 yards long. It is thrilling, but expansive; the action ebbs and flows across a large canvas.
SandPolo, by contrast, tightens the frame and raises the intensity. It is played in an enclosed arena on sand, beach polo typically features three players per team. The pitch is smaller, and the action comes thick and fast. The ball moves quickly but not as freely as on turf, encouraging close control and rapid-fire passing. For spectators, this creates an electrifying experience: you are not watching from a distant pavilion, but close enough to feel the sand lift beneath each turn and hear the thud of hooves as ponies dig in.
The rules of SandPolo are designed to keep the game flowing and, above all, safe.

Chukkas, the periods of play, are shorter, reflecting the more physical nature of the surface. Ride-offs, where players jostle shoulder to shoulder for possession, still apply, as does the fundamental “line of the ball” rule that governs right of way and prevents dangerous crossing. Umpires remain vigilant, whistles quick to follow any infringement that could endanger horse or rider. The result is a game that is compact, tactical and undeniably compelling.
So how did this ancient sport find such fertile ground on Sandbanks? The answer lies in both innovation and accessibility. Nearly two decades ago, the idea of bringing polo to the beach was sparked by a desire to open the sport up to a wider audience. Away from private estates and exclusive clubhouses, SandPolo places the game in a truly public arena. Locals, holidaymakers and seasoned polo fans can stand shoulder to shoulder, united by the thrill of the contest.
Sandbanks itself provides the perfect stage. The natural amphitheatre of the beach, framed by calm waters and expansive skies, lends a cinematic quality to the event. Add live music, hospitality tents and a relaxed coastal atmosphere, and SandPolo becomes not just a sporting fixture but a summer festival and one that has truly embedded itself into Poole’s social calendar.
Its success over 19 years is no accident. Riders relish the challenge of a different surface; ponies, trained meticulously for the sand, show off their versatility and courage. Sponsors and spectators are drawn by the blend of sport and spectacle, tradition and reinvention. Crucially, the event has remained respectful of polo’s core values while being unafraid to shake off some of its formality.
As the players line up at the start of a match, mallets raised and eyes fixed on the ball, you can sense the weight of history behind them and the excitement of something unmistakably modern. The same instincts that once served ancient cavalry now play out a few strides from the sea.
This July, when the arena goes up once more on Sandbanks and the first chukka is thrown in, you’ll be watching more than a game. You’ll be witnessing a living tradition, galloping confidently into its future.
See you on the sand.

The moment my son reacted to milk during weaning is one I will never forget. One minute we were introducing a new food, the next we were facing hives, vomiting and sheer panic. As both a parent and a doctor, it was terrifying - and it changed the course of my life.

Like many families navigating allergies, we quickly learned that the condition does not simply affect the child; it shapes daily routines, social events, school choices and even sleep. The constant vigilance can be exhausting. I was working as a GP and training in general surgery at the time, yet suddenly my professional path felt incomplete. I wanted to do more - not only for my own child, but for the thousands of families living with the same uncertainty.
Retraining as an allergy specialist was not an easy decision, but it was a necessary one. Completing a Master’s in Allergy and establishing a dedicated clinic allowed me to combine medical expertise with lived experience. Today, I work with families

every day who arrive feeling frightened and overwhelmed, and leave with knowledge, reassurance and a clear plan forward.
As I often tell parents, “When I say I understand something must be tough, it’s not just ‘doctor speak’. It’s because I have the scars of a path trodden.” That shared understanding is powerful. It builds trust and reminds families that they are not alone.
My journey has included personal challenges beyond allergies, including a recent battle with breast cancer, which deepened my appreciation for compassionate, patient-centred care. Adversity has a way of sharpening purpose. For me, it strengthened my determination to improve access to expert support and practical treatment options, including therapies that can help children and adults

Magazine editor and stylist Benjamin Reynaert shares some key secrets to creating maximalist style at home.
Sometimes it takes a lot of vision and imagination to make a big impact and elevate a room’s aesthetic from straightforward to showstopping.
And for Benjamin Reynaert, magazine editor, regular contributor to publications including Elle Decor and House Beautiful, and stylist behind @aspoonfulofbenjamin, more is more… and then some.
Browse his Instagram account and the stylist’s posts feature interiors saturated with colour, splendid backdrops and beautiful artwork and fabrics.
Evidently, it resonates with his 126,000 followers… and it was only a matter of time before Reynaert merged these artistic flourishes into his first book, The Layered Home, in which he steps inside the spaces of some of his favourite tastemakers.
Here, he explores the interior of India Holmes’ house in north London, where the designer and textile expert has made her signature mark.
“Holmes has lived in a world of colour, pattern, and play since she was little. It’s built into her outlook on the world, and expressed through her work as a designer and creator,” writes Reynaert.

“She’s always interested in fresh options for how her home can look; rooms are spaces for embracing change and instilling opportunities for purposeful inquisitiveness.”
Moreover he says “a lot of art has been gifted by friends, all of it cherished. And much of what is kept hails from somewhere or someone else, as recycling and reuse are extremely important to Holmes’ way of living.
“A philosophy that shows in her commitment to working with a community of conscious buyers, designers, and artisans.”
The sofa cushions with playing card designs, for example (above), were made from her childhood bedroom curtains, highlights Reynaert.
He continues: “Her [entrance area] is amazing and deserves all the attention it gets. For this space, she had good ‘tent’ reference points and was able to create something magical on a bit of a budget.
“She’s quite skilled at getting at the essence of an idea and executing it herself for less, with her signature wit and whimsy.”

ABOVE

For Holmes, staging a space is never done. “This room has had numerous layouts over the years and is due for another any day now! Especially in a small space, I am constantly thinking, there must be a better way around.” | Manuel Rodriquez/PA

With a kaleidoscope colour and texture, as Reynaert puts it: “Strikingly theatrical, the room evokes the spirit of a homemade circus. Above, a treatment of red and white stripes radiates across the ceiling, with the walls drenched in a vibrant blue-green shade.
“Disparate patterns, stripe widths, and chromatic tones unite largely in part to the tasselled bunting, which is equally a visual distraction from the bold ceiling, and a quiet harmoniser for the busy space.”
Of the striped bunting, India Holmes says: “It ties everything together, when most of it wants to clash!”
These small yet substantive decorative details hold similar sway in every room Holmes has designed, writes Reynaert. “Constructively bringing order and alignment to rooms where colour, pattern, objects, and textures massively converge.”
India Holmes says: “Like a magpie drawn to shiny objects, I have an insatiable love of decorative objects, ceramics, paintings, fabrics – anything and everything handmade or just beautiful to look at. I am a total sucker for souvenirs and trinkets. During wonderful trips abroad, I have always made sure to fly out with half a suitcase free!”
The creative director at design studio Pelican House, Holmes advocates for the staying power of furniture and objects within living spaces. “Once something has served its purpose, I often resell it and buy what needs to go in its place.
ABOVE
In the bedroom, red, yellow, and green are thoughtfully combined across a range of patterns and motifs | Manuel Rodriquez/PA
“Where possible, I like to sell and rebuy within the same price point, creating my own cycle of free design – these being secondhand objects to begin with – and buying secondhand or antique in some cases.”
As Reynaert underlines, her personality plays out in the heavy influence of colour and pattern that imbues each space. “The default is layering patterns, a reflex that is informed primarily by gut feeling and a penchant for taking chances.”
For anyone looking to loosen up their pattern-mixing skills, Holmes says colour can be a good reference to use as a guide.
“If you know you love a pattern and every time you look at it, it makes you happy, the likelihood is it will fall into place with the rest of the patterns in your house.”

There is a quiet shift happening in the way we inhabit our homes. Increasingly, the boundary between indoors and out is dissolving, replaced by a more fluid, considered approach to living. At the centre of this evolution sits a deceptively simple architectural element: the awning.
Far from being a purely functional addition, today’s awnings have become an expression of design intent — a seamless extension of the home that balances aesthetics, comfort and performance. Nowhere is this more evident than in the refined engineering of Warema systems, where innovation meets elegance.

The modern awning is no longer just about shade; it is about atmosphere. It is about creating a space that invites lingering — a terrace that feels like a room, a balcony that becomes a sanctuary. With intelligent design and precision manufacturing, awnings now offer a level of sophistication that complements even the most discerning architectural styles.
Take, for instance, the Warema K55. With its award-winning design language, it harmonises curved and linear elements to create something both striking and understated. It is as much a design statement as it is a practical solution, bringing a sense of balance and cohesion to any façade. Integrated lighting transforms the space after sunset, casting a soft, ambient glow that extends the usability of the outdoors well into the evening.

For those drawn to a more minimal aesthetic, the Warema K50 offers a refined, cubic form that integrates effortlessly into contemporary architecture. Its compact construction allows for discreet installation, ensuring that the focus remains on the architecture itself, while still delivering robust performance and durability.
Meanwhile, the Warema 550 provides an elegant solution for more intimate spaces. Designed with a slender cassette, it protects the fabric and mechanism while maintaining a light visual presence — ideal for balconies or smaller terraces where every detail matters.
What unites these systems is a commitment to craftsmanship and customisation. With an extensive palette of fabrics and finishes, each installation becomes entirely bespoke. This level of personalisation ensures that the awning does not simply sit alongside the architecture, but enhances it — a considered layer that elevates the entire outdoor experience.
Beyond aesthetics, there is a quiet intelligence at work. Cassette designs protect the fabric and articulated arms from the elements, preserving both appearance and longevity. Integrated controls and optional smart systems allow for effortless operation, adapting to changing light and weather conditions with ease. The result is a solution that feels as intuitive as it is beautiful.
Ultimately, the appeal of a premium awning lies in its ability to transform how a space is used. It offers shade without compromise, shelter without enclosure, and design without excess. It invites you to step outside — not just occasionally, but as part of everyday life.
In a world where time spent at home has never felt more valuable, investing in outdoor living is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity. And with the right awning, that investment becomes something more — a statement of style, a gesture of comfort, and a celebration of living well.

Springtime soirées signal a snazzy serve, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
In tune with the seasons, much like wearing fewer layers and lighter fabrics to stay cool, tastes change and so do our warm weather drinks rituals.
After months of muddling and garnishing with evergreen herbs and rustling up spicy recipes, it’s time to forage for fresh flavours, zingy notes of citrus to perk up the palate, and lighter thirst-quenchers.
From the simplicity of three ingredients, to the crisp, refreshing notes of gently spiced ginger, time to reach for a cocktail shaker, long bar spoon, quality ice cubes and start clinking al fresco…

A delicious introduction to England’s rich flavour map, Fielden Rye Whisky (£55, 70cl, Fielden), is a spicy amber beauty featuring floral and fruity notes with bready flavours, nuts, and spices in the mix. Bold with caramel lingering on the finish, this English rye and ginger makes a feisty highball.
INGREDIENTS
50ml Fielden Rye Whisky, dash of lemon juice, ginger ale. Lemon wedge or slice to garnish.
METHOD
Half-fill a highball glass with ice, add the whisky and lemon juice. Top with ginger ale and stir gently. Garnish with a lemon wedge or slice.
With creamy elderflower blossoms coming into bloom next month, the fragrant notes of Fentimans Gently Sparkling Elderflower, (£3.50, 750ml, Ocado)
INGREDIENTS
25ml Elderflower Liqueur, 75ml prosecco, 75ml Fentimans Gently Sparkling Elderflower. Cucumber ribbon and a sprig of mint to garnish.
METHOD
Half-fill a large wine glass with ice. Add the liqueur, then the prosecco and top with sparkling elderflower. Gently stir and garnish with a cucumber ribbon and sprig of mint.
Rich, fruity bourbon with sweet, woody accents such as Elijah Craig Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (£46.75, 70cl, The Whisky Exchange), seems to be a natural pairing with the sweet, slightly bitter flavours of blackberry liqueur… and this oh-so sophisticated serve is brilliantly balanced.
INGREDIENTS
37.5ml Elijah Craig, 12.5ml blackberry liqueur, 2 lemon wedges squeezed, ginger ale. Blackberry and mint sprig to garnish.
METHOD
Half fill a high-ball with ice. Add the bourbon, raspberry liqueur, and lemon juice. Stir slowly and top with ginger ale. Garnish with a blackberry and mint sprig.

If you fancy calling time on the classic Paloma (Mexican cocktail made with tequila), this Cuban version with Ron Santiago De Cuba Carta Blanca Rum (£22.95, 70cl, The Whisky Exchange), is right on cue with the sweet-sharp sweetness of pink grapefruit for a vibrant sundowner.
INGREDIENTS
50ml Ron Santiago de Cuba Carta Blanca, 25ml fresh lime juice, 5ml agave syrup, 100ml pink grapefruit soda. Tajin (seasoning) to garnish and rim the glass.
METHOD
Rim a chilled highball glass with Tajin. Half fill with ice and add the rum, lime juice and syrup. Stir slowly and top with pink grapefruit soda.

Fun wordplay on what has become a much-loved denim staple, Hollywood actor and producer Matthew McConaughey is behind this multi award-winning tequila… and a jewel from Jalisco. Spanish for pants, Pantalones Tequila Blanco (£43, 70cl, Master of Malt) is silky smooth, and combines sweet, honeyed notes with cooked agave, and twist of pepper on the tail.
Here’s the recipe to get your tequila fix…
INGREDIENTS
45ml PantalonesTequila Blanco, 110ml grapefruit soda, 50ml champagne. Sugar to rim the glass.
METHOD
Wet the rim of a highball glass with a lime wedge or water. Dip in white granulated sugar to coat the rim. Half-fill with ice and add the tequila and grapefruit soda. Stir slowly and top with champagne. Garnish with a slice of grapefruit.

Gin cocktails come and go, but the true classics stand the test of time… and you can’t beat the juniper-rich notes with hints of pine and citrus in Trevethan 1929 Dry Gin (£38, £29.50 Nectar price, Sainsbury’s), to boost those brilliant bubbles.
INGREDIENTS
35ml Trevethan 1929 Dry Gin, 15ml fresh lemon juice, 15ml simple syrup, 60ml champagne or sparkling wine. Lemon twist to garnish.
METHOD
Half-fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the gin, lemon juice and syrup, shake well and strain into a chilled flute. Top with champagne or sparkling wine and garnish with a lemon twist.
Let’s raise a glass to springtime socials!

At Portman Stone, every project begins long before installation day. It begins in our Christchurch-based factory, where precision, craftsmanship, and investment in the latest technology come together to create worktops that are designed to last.
Over the past year, we’ve continued to evolve our production capabilities, ensuring we deliver the highest standard of finish across every project. A key part of this has been the introduction of our new Donatoni CNC saw — a significant investment that enables us to cut stone with exceptional accuracy and efficiency. Combined with our digital laser templating process, this technology ensures that every worktop is manufactured to exact specifications, reducing margin for error and delivering consistently high-quality results.

While technology plays a vital role, it’s the people behind the process that truly define what we do. As a family-run business, Portman Stone has been built on a foundation of hands-on experience, strong values, and a genuine passion for the industry. This approach continues to shape how we operate today, from the factory floor through to customer service.
We are also proud to support other local businesses wherever possible. From the signwriting on our growing fleet of vans, carried out by Extreme Signs, to the recent addition of new vehicles supplied by Keith Motors, working with trusted local partners is a key part of how we run our business. These relationships not only support the local economy but also ensure we maintain the same level of quality and reliability across every aspect of our brand.

Our expanding fleet reflects the continued growth of the company and our commitment to delivering a seamless service — from initial enquiry through to final installation. With dedicated teams handling templating, fabrication, and fitting, we ensure each stage of the process is carefully managed and executed to the highest standard.

As we continue to grow, our focus remains the same: combining precision craftsmanship with honest, transparent service. Whether working on a single residential kitchen or a large-scale development, we approach every project with the same attention to detail and commitment to quality.
At Portman Stone, we’re not just creating worktops — we’re building long-term relationships, both with our customers and within our local community.
If you’ve ever rented a property, you’ll know the process can sometimes feel a bit like online dating. The photos look promising, everyone says they’re “easy-going”, and before you know it, you’re arguing over damp patches and whether that stain was “already there”.
This is precisely why Camerons Lettings exists: to take the drama out of renting and replace it with something radical — competence.
Based in Bournemouth, Camerons has built its reputation on being refreshingly honest, straightforward and properly switched on. No smoke, no mirrors, no estate agent waffle about a “cosy bijou living space” when what they really mean is “cupboard with aspirations”. Just sensible advice, real people and a lettings service that actually does what it says on the tin.
For landlords, Camerons is the difference between seeing your rental property as an investment and seeing it as a recurring source of low-level panic. Finding reliable tenants, keeping on top of legislation, handling notices, inspections, maintenance and paperwork — it’s enough to make even the calmest landlord suddenly develop a twitch.

Camerons takes that weight off your shoulders. Their landlord services cover everything from tenant sourcing and referencing through to property management and legal support, helping you stay compliant without needing a law degree or a bottle of Sauvignon on standby. They offer fixed, competitive fees
too, which is always nice in a world where surprise costs tend to arrive with all the charm of an unexpected boiler breakdown.
For tenants, Camerons is equally valuable. Whether you’re looking for your first flat, somewhere with room for an actual dining table, or simply a place where the shower doesn’t behave like a Victorian punishment device, their team takes the time to understand what matters to you.
They don’t just hand over keys and vanish into the mist. Camerons guides tenants through contracts, legal responsibilities and the finer details of renting, so you know exactly where you stand from day one. And if something goes wrong, you’re not left shouting into the void while your email gathers dust. They pride themselves on staying responsive, helpful and human.
At its heart, Camerons Lettings understands something many forget: property is never just about bricks and mortar. It’s about peace of mind. For landlords, that means confidence. For tenants, it means feeling at home.
And in a world full of needless hassle, that’s worth its weight in gold.

Fuse function with flair to streamline your working space, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
When it comes to home renovations, a new shiny kitchen certainly gives you the confidence to make the most of the hardest working room in the house.
But it’s safe to say, there’s more than meets the eye to kitchen upgrades, a total refurb, or switching up the fixtures.
From circulation and storage, to kitchen island sizing and placement, thoughtful layout choices can be make or break in everyday use.
Here, experts outline the most common kitchen layout challenges – and practical ways to design around them…
Consider circulation and spacing
“We’re seeing kitchens take on more roles than ever, from cooking and dining to working and entertaining,” highlights Kiya Kelly-Paine, design expert from home and design platform Houzz, who specialises in design trends and how people are improving their homes.
“Meaning circulation space plays a much bigger role in how well a layout functions day-to-day.”
Moreover, she suggests freeing up room to move around is a key consideration, with the Houzz Kitchen Trends Study 2026 indicating a third of renovations “are being driven by functionality rather than just aesthetics.”
Mark Andrews, director of Dual Designs, who has been creating bespoke kitchens and furniture since 1988, says: “A kitchen is a busy working space, so correct spacing is absolutely vital.
“Every zone, from cooking and cleaning to storage, needs to work well on its own, but also collectively.

“When spacing is ignored, everyday tasks become harder – and the kitchen quickly stops feeling like the space you imagined.”
Find the correct island size for your space
“An island is often the most desired feature in a kitchen, but it has to suit the space,” underlines Andrews.
“If it’s too large, it can dominate the room and restrict movement. Too small, and it looks out of proportion and doesn’t work practically.”
He continues: “Correct spacing around an island is key. You want natural movement between the main worktop and the island. With enough room to open doors, unload appliances and move around comfortably; especially if seating is involved.”
A design preference for sure, Kelly-Paine says islands increasingly function as multi-purpose hubs, supporting a wide range of activities, “including cooking, dining, entertaining and baking.”

“That makes proportion and spacing especially important,” and that “tools such as 3D floor plans can help homeowners really visualise how an island will function within the space.”
Focus on workflow and zoning
When choosing cabinetry, Kelly-Paine says there’s a strong shift towards task-specific zones in kitchens.
Fundamental to the overall aesthetic, she says speciality built-in features such as pantries, butler’s kitchens or beverage stations are gaining traction, “with designers increasingly planning kitchens around specific activities rather than a single central workspace.”
Helping to boost efficiency, if kitchen zoning is overlooked “simple tasks can become frustrating very quickly,” warns Andrews.
“We often hear clients say certain areas of their kitchen ‘just don’t work,’ which usually comes down to poor relationships between prep, sink and cooking zones.
“Small layout changes, such as positioning bins, dishwashers or work surfaces more thoughtfully, can have a noticeable impact on everyday use.”

Plan clever storage
It may not come as much of a surprise, but storage still remains a top priority, notes Kelly-Paine, with integrated speciality storage features such as pull-out bins, deep drawers and organisers to optimise storage space.
And the Houzz pros suggest layouts work best when storage is planned around daily routines, keeping clutter out of sight; but making frequently used items easy to access.
Andrews says: “When storage isn’t planned properly, items can end up spilling into other rooms. Deep pan drawers and well-designed larders make a huge difference.
“They allow everything to be accessed easily, reduce wasted space, and help keep everyday items organised and close to where they’re used.”
Consider lighting early in your renovation journey Lighting is often left until later, notes Andrews, “but it has a huge impact on how usable a kitchen is.
“Poorly positioned lighting can cast shadows over prep and sink areas, warns the kitchen expert, “turning what should be practical spaces into problem zones.
He continues: “Good lighting needs to be planned alongside the layout. From task lighting under wall units to internal lighting in larders, these details work best when they’re considered from the very beginning.”
Kelly-Paine says: “Lighting is one of the most commonly upgraded features, with task lighting, such as undercabinet lights, particularly popular.
Highlighting how closely lighting choices are tied to layout – and how the kitchen is used day-to-day,” she adds.

The Art & Craft of Print exhibition: 9 May to 1 November 2026, Mottisfont, Hampshire
This summer, the National Trust celebrates the art and craft of printmaking with a major exhibition at Mottisfont in Hampshire.
Curated in partnership with St Jude’s Prints, The Art & Craft of Print brings together the most comprehensive exhibition of print illustration to-date, showcasing the work of 26 major printmakers working in Britain today, including Angie Lewin, Mark Hearld, Emily Sutton and Jonny Hannah.
For the first time, visitors are also able to explore the printmaking techniques behind the art, from screen print and linocut to wood engraving, letterpress and lithography. Displays and behind-thescenes material reveal the intricate, often complex processes involved, encouraging the viewer to look beyond the finished image to discover how prints are conceived and developed. Tools, materials, sketchbooks and proofs offer insight into the stages of experimentation and decision-making that underpin each final work.
Alongside the framed prints, the exhibition situates printmaking within the wider context of everyday design. Printed textiles and wallpaper highlight the ways artists’ original works can inspire designs for the home. Fabrics set-dress gallery windows, and walls are transformed with wallpaper prints. Produced by St Jude’s Fabrics,

and designed by artists represented at Mottisfont, these elements suggest how a printmaker’s visual language can extend beyond paper into interior space.
Film footage and stills offer an additional perspective on the artists’ working environments. Drawn from their studios and print workshops, this material sits alongside tools, proofs and finished works, gently illuminating aspects of printmaking practice. Together, these elements invite a deeper appreciation of the care, skill and time involved in making contemporary prints.
“It’s a real honour for St Jude’s to be working with the National Trust on this exhibition at Mottisfont,” says Simon Lewin, co-founder of St Jude’s. “Printmaking has been at the heart of everything we do for over twentyone years, and this exhibition celebrates not only the beauty of the finished prints, but the extraordinary craft, skill and quiet dedication behind them. To share that story in such a special place, and with so many artists we’ve worked with over the years, feels particularly meaningful.”

Mottisfont has a strong historical association with craftsmanship, from the hand-painted marble walls in the long gallery to Rex Whistler’s famous trompe l’oeil artwork in the Whistler Room and Boris Anrep’s mosaic angel, fringed by wisteria on the south side of the house. Former owner, arts patron and society hostess Maud Russell, had a deep appreciation for pattern and design, and she was a passionate supporter of contemporary artists; a tradition that Mottisfont continues today through its changing programme of exhibitions.
Sue Laws, exhibition curator and Senior Programming Officer at Mottisfont: “I’ve long wanted to bring a print exhibition to the gallery at Mottisfont; not only because of my own love for the craft, but because I’m passionate about sharing the process behind the art.

“There’s so much that goes into creating a handmade print. At its heart, printmaking is wonderfully democratic; it can be as simple as a potato print, but in the hands of a skilled artist it can produce something truly extraordinary. It’s an art form with a history stretching back thousands of years.
“So many of the nation’s heritage craft skills are at risk of being lost forever, but craft really seems to be experiencing a revival. There’s renewed desire to make and create with our hands, maybe because it’s such a grounding and comforting process. I hope this exhibition not only celebrates that spirit but also inspires our visitors to have a go themselves!”
The Art & Craft of Print exhibition, 9 May to 1 November, free entry upon normal property admission, 11am – 4pm (gardens open 10am – 5pm), Mottisfont, Hampshire SO51 0LP.
This is a selling exhibition. Prints can be purchased direct through St Jude’s Prints.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is one of those rare musicals that doesn’t come around often – so when it does, it makes it even more unmissable. From Kander and Ebb, the creators of Cabaret and Chicago, this unforgettable adaptation brings all the drama of Manuel Puig’s epic novel to life, set to an incredible score.
Ahead of its opening at Curve, the production’s director Paul Foster and its three leads Anna-Jane Casey (Cabaret, The Kit Kat Club), Fabian Soto Pacheco (Dear Evan Hansen, Luciernaga Producciónes, Teatro Auditorio Nacional, Costa Rica) and George Blagden (Versailles, BBC) gave their take on this spectacular show and revealed what it’s like to bring this exciting revival to the stage.

What’s your role within the production?
Fabian Soto Pacheco: I’m playing Luis Alberto Molina. Molina is as flamboyant and as fabulous as one can be. Molina escapes the reality of being in prison by retelling and re-living the movies that Aurora, a spectacular actress who is Molina’s biggest obsession, has starred in.
George Blagden: I play Valentin – he’s a Marxist revolutionary who has been jailed for his beliefs, and for this anti-government movement that he is involved in stirring up.
ABOVE

LEFT

Anna-Jane Casey: Aurora and the Spider Woman, who I play and who is in the title of the piece, is a very interesting character. Aurora is the classic movie star –it’s the big hair and glamorous outfits, worlds apart from the Spider Woman, who is the epitome of death in one of her films and who so frightens Molina. This role has always been literally on my bucket list – my absolute idol is Chita Rivera, who played it in London and America in the original production, and so to be able to step into Chita’s shoes for five minutes is such a blessing.
Paul Foster: I started learning Spanish almost forty years ago and studied the original Manuel Puig novel. To be directing Kiss Of The Spider Woman is a real dream. I feel very, very lucky – it’s not an opportunity that many people get to experience. It feels like a story for now –although it’s been over 30 years since it’s been done at scale in this country, believe we need stories like this at the moment. Stories that transport us, stories that give us hope, and stories that remind us that even when times look dark, we can still find light.
What is it about this story that makes it so captivating?
GB: It’s essentially about these two men who are imprisoned in 1970s Buenos Aires and how they change one another through the course of sharing a cell. Fabian’s character Molina creates fantasy worlds as a way of dealing with their trauma, removing them from the torrid
world of their cell and transporting them to this dreamlike Hollywood world. It’s all about escapism and dealing with suffering in the best, most magical way possible.
FSP: This is a story I’ve been in love with for years, and I hope those who aren’t familiar with it will fall in love with it too. The Argentinian novel by Manuel Puig is a classic in Latin America, and a staple in queer literature. It is about two people, seemingly very different from one another, changing each other profoundly while sharing a cell in prison. It is also a story that has proven to be timeless - it deals with love being more powerful than hate in the face of political injustice.
AJC: This hasn’t been revived for many years – so many people have fought for the rights to do this show, and they’ve finally let us have a go at it! We’re doing a very different version to what was seen in the 90s, which was a massive Broadway production. We’re doing a more compact version, which I think will bring the narrative more to the forefront, because it is a really deep and meaningful story. It’s not your traditional jazzhandsy musical, even though there are moments of complete fabulousness.
ABOVE
Anna-Jane Casey Aurora | Photography by Marc Brenner
PF: It works on a lot of levels, this story – these two men that you might think are from opposing backgrounds, and with completely different opinions on the world, but gradually, step by step, little by little, they find common ground. It becomes a piece with a lot of tenderness, where once it started as a story with a lot of anger. It’s like a chemistry set – what was acid becomes alkali. But throughout it all, we’ve got this incredible woman Aurora, who is this dream actress of the Silver Screen, and she spins a web in the different characters that she portrays. So, whilst we’ve got the claustrophobia of the cell, we’ve also got this incredible Technicolor routine. For the audience, it’s a real eye-popping show, a real visual feast.
How would you describe Kander and Ebb’s score?
PF: I’m not being paid to say this, but I think this is Kander and Ebb’s best score! It’s got boleros in it, it’s got samba in it, it’s got beautiful ballads, lush harmonic singing, songs of hope, songs that will get your feet tapping, songs that gladden your heart. It’s a real rich variety in combination with an excellent book by Terrence McNally, and I’m really looking forward to audiences in Leicester, Bristol and Southampton experiencing that, because it’s an opportunity that doesn’t come along very often.

FSP: I adore it – it is my favourite Kander and Ebb score. It has all the brilliance of the duo’s music and lyrics, but infused with Latin flavours and rhythms. It’s dramatic, it’s striking, and it has so many great songs.
AJC: John Kander and Fred Ebb, if people don’t know, wrote Chicago and Cabaret – that’s a brilliant indicator of what their music is. This beautiful music has got a bit of a rumba and a samba feel, some jazzy numbers, but there are also some incredible ballads with heartfelt lyrics. In fact, Kander and Ebb themselves said it was their favourite score – from the two men who wrote New York, New York, that’s a pretty good reference!
What’s it like to be part of this incredible company?
FSP: It’s the biggest honour. These are people who I’ve wanted to work with for a long time, and to be trusted by them with a character like this is unbelievable. The brilliant Director, Paul Foster, the stunningly talented Choreographer, Joanna Goodwin, as well as George Blagden and Anna Jane Casey… I’m so excited to get to share the stage with talents like that. I am so grateful.

AJC: To be asked to be involved in this incredible production here at Curve in Leicester and at Bristol Old Vic and Mayflower Southampton with the most amazing creative team is just a dream. We’ve got my favourite Director Paul Foster, our Musical Director Dan Glover, Sarah Travis is one of the UK’s most renowned orchestrators and musical arrangers, Joanna Goodwin is our amazing Choreographer, David Woodhead our incredible Set Designer, Gabriella Slade our phenomenal Costume Designer – the list of talent here truly is endless. All of this and to be under the banner of Curve and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster is a real treat for me. I am honoured and thrilled that I’m going to be able to do this.
PF: When you look at the entirety of our cast – led by Fabian, George and Anna-Jane – they’re triple threats, people who can dance, sing, and act brilliantly. And I think they’re going to tell this story - literally weave this webwith incredible skill and hopefully audiences will have their jaws on the floor watching them. Along with our incredible creative team – we’re all committed to making this as hypnotic and as exciting as we possibly can.
ABOVE

What can you tell us about the costumes?
AJC: I seem to have got the budget! Everyone else is in prison-wear and I’m in some incredible corseted outfits that are reminiscent of that 1940s age of cinema but with a twist, using the most gorgeous fabric. So there’s real moments of dark depression in the prison with the prison guards and the deliberately drab nature of what they’re wearing, contrasted with this fantastical stuff that comes out with Gabriella Slade’s designs, Howard Hudson’s lighting and Andrzej Goulding’s video designs. There’s an explosion of beautiful, bright colours and excitement! The final number of Act One has an almost Carnival-like vibe.
What should audiences expect from this production of Kiss Of The Spider Woman?
FSP: It’s a heartbreakingly beautiful story. It has captivating music with some new orchestrations. There’s dazzling new choreography as well – I can’t wait for audiences to see it.
GB: It’s in a dark, similar vein to Cabaret [also by Kander and Ebb] with lots of different levels and meanings. It’s got so much that is pertinent to today with the need for escapism and joy, and it’s going to be really up close and personal in the intimate spaces. And it’s the first major revival in the UK since 1992 – I didn’t know that the show hadn’t been on for such a long time when I
was auditioning, so I think audiences are going to get something really special with it. Taking that big, expansive musical setting that it was in the 90s into this intimate space – I hope the effect will be that the audience feel like they’re right there in the prison cell with Molina and Valentin.
AJC: This is a great, beautiful, political piece of drama underneath, with songs on top. Audiences are going to get full-out numbers with dancing and singing, along with an amazingly compassionate tale about two men who are finding a friendship amidst the most awful of circumstances. I think there should be something for everyone. There’ll be tears, there’ll be laughter and there’ll be beauty.
PF: You know, some titles come along every week. But it’s been over 30 years since British audiences have had a look at this one. And to do it like we’re doing it in this close-up, intimate chamber way... I hope it will feel unforgettable.
Kiss of the Spider Woman plays at Mayflower Studios from Tuesday 2 until Saturday 6 June. Tickets can be purchased at mayflower.org.uk.

At Burns Hamilton, we’ve been specialising in residential lettings and property management across Bournemouth, Poole and the surrounding areas for over 55 years. As ARLA-licensed letting agents, we pride ourselves on delivering a professional, reliable and personal service to both landlords and tenants.
Whether you’re looking to let your property, searching for your next rental home, or need expert guidance throughout the tenancy process, we’re here to make the experience straightforward, efficient and stress-free.
When leaseholders hear the term “building safety”, it is often associated with high rise or complex developments. But the reality is that recent building safety reforms have changed how all residential blocks are managed.
The most significant change has been a shift in mindset. Building safety is no longer about reacting when something goes wrong. Landlords, Directors of RMCs and RTMs, and Managing Agents are now expected to take a proactive, ongoing approach, with clear evidence that risks are identified, monitored and managed appropriately.
For leaseholders, this often shows up in the level of record keeping and transparency around safety. Fire risk assessments, maintenance programmes and contractor decisions must be clearly documented and reviewed. Even where additional legal duties do not apply, expectations around governance, accountability and audit trails are significantly higher than they were in the past.
Leaseholders may see some safety related costs increase as a result of higher compliance standards and more proactive management. These costs are intended to address identified risks and improve building safety overall. Importantly,

residents should be able to understand what this expenditure is for and how it supports the safety of their home and neighbours.
Good safety management should not feel like unnecessary bureaucracy. When done well, it helps identify issues early, reduces the risk of costly problems later on and provides reassurance that safety is being taken seriously for everyone who lives in the building.
“Building safety is about more than meeting minimum legal requirements - it is about protecting people’s homes and wellbeing. Even in lower risk buildings, clear processes, good records and open communication are essential. Leaseholders should feel confident that safety is actively managed, not assumed.”
- Brian Collins BSc (Hons) MTPI AssocRICS Associate Director, Burns Hamilton
Non compliance with building safety obligations carries real risks, from enforcement action and increased costs to avoidable failures that can impact your home and your neighbours. That’s why it is vital to have a Managing Agent who understands the evolving regulatory landscape and can provide clear, practical advice.
Burns Hamilton has significant expertise in residential block management and building safety, supporting leaseholders and directors to meet their responsibilities confidently and responsibly.
If you have questions about how safety is managed in your building, or want reassurance that the right steps are being taken, seeking proper advice from your Managing Agent is one of the most important actions you can take to help keep your building, and those who live in it, safe.

1. A current Fire Risk Assessment
Your building should have an up to date fire risk assessment carried out by a competent professional, with clear actions identified and reviewed regularly.
2. A planned maintenance programme
Safety relies on preventative maintenance. Ask whether your building has a forward looking plan, rather than relying on ad hoc repairs.
3. Proper records and evidence
Safety checks, inspections and maintenance shouldn’t just be “done”, they should be documented. Your managing agent should be able to evidence what’s in place if asked.
4. Transparent explanation of safety costs
Leaseholders should be able to understand what safety related costs are for, why they are necessary, and how they are recovered through the service charge.
5. Clear communication with residents
Good safety management includes keeping residents informed, especially where inspections, works or changes a ect how the building is used.

Inspired by Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday
Legendary broadcaster, historian and environmental activist Sir David Attenborough turns 100 on May 8.
In a career spanning eight decades, Attenborough has become synonymous with natural history and a remarkable advocate for the world’s wildlife – and its future in the face of climate change.
His most famous TV series such as the BBC’s Life On Earth in 1979 and Blue Planet (2001), as well as Planet Earth (2006), Frozen Planet (2011) and Africa (2013) helped educate and entertain millions – and have inspired plenty of holidaymakers to explore distant, biodiverse corners of the earth, witness animals in their natural habitats and helped lead a shift towards more eco-conscious and ethical travel.
In celebration of Attenborough’s 100 years on earth, here are five incredible wildlife experiences.

Gorillas and chimpanzees in Rwanda and Uganda
When Attenborough famously encountered a young silverback Gorilla, Pablo, nearly 50 years ago – which he reflects on in the new Netflix documentary David Attenborough: A Gorilla Story – it was in Rwanda.

The presenter has put the central African country’s conservation story onto the global stage. Filmed in the Volcanoes National Park, the documentary follows Pablo’s gorilla family and looks back at Attenborough’s connection to the animals, dating back to his 1978 visit to the park.

Gorillas in Rwanda | Volcanoes Safaris/PA
You can follow in his footsteps. Volcanoes Safaris focus exclusively on conservation-led journeys into the gorilla and chimpanzee parks of Rwanda and Uganda, with five luxury lodges close to key habitats – including Virunga Lodge near Volcanoes National Park, which also has ties to the late primatologist and conservationist Dian Fossey.
Perched above Lakes Burera and Ruhondo with volcanic views, Virunga Lodge offers a seven-night gorilla and golden monkey safari, paired with Mount Gahinga Lodge in Uganda. The itinerary includes trekking to see mountain gorillas in both countries and rare golden monkeys, hiking a volcano, and learning about Batwa cultural experiences.
Prices for Seven-Night Gorilla, Golden Monkey and Batwa Culture Safari are from £7,480 per person in low season, all-inclusive. Book before June 30 for a complimentary night at Mount Gahinga Lodge and free golden monkey permit. Visit: volcanoessafaris.com.

in Nepal | The Ultimate Travel Company/PA
Rhinos in Nepal
Rhino populations face severe threats from poaching, but Nepal, which has one of the major populations of the animal, has achieved success in conserving the greater one-horned rhino in the UNESCO World Heritage site Chitwan National Park.
Numbers of rhinos generally have increased so much since the 1970s (when an estimated 100 only remained in the country) that some communities are having to relearn how to coexist with rhinos, with around 700 living in around the park now, according to The Guardian.
Travellers can witness firsthand this incredible conversation effort during an 11-day tour with The Ultimate Travel Company. It begins in Kathmandu, for the ancient temples, stupas and palaces, before heading to the Nepalese Himalayas. Other wildlife you might come across includes sloth bears, monkeys and the Bengal tiger (although sightings are rare in the park).
The Simply Nepal 11-day tour costs from £3,880 per person, including international flights. Visit: theultimatetravelcompany.co.uk.

Jaguars in Brazil
Brazil has some of the world’s greatest biodiversity in the world and considered the best place to see jaguars in the wild – namely in Porto Jofre, of Brazil’s Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland. Rainbow Tours offer an 11-day trip here, designed with as much overland travel as possible to reduce environmental impact while exploring this remarkable region, as well as the Cerrado Savanna and the Amazon rainforest.
With hikes near dramatic waterfalls, up mountains and down canyons of the Parque Nacional Chapada dos Guimarães, excursions expose the depth of Brazil’s flora, fauna and animal life in the day and night. With a good chance of spotting jaguars, you can expect to see caimans, capybaras, monkeys, anteaters, tapirs, giant river otters and, perhaps if you’re lucky, maned wolves – with expert guides highly attuned to every shift and nuance of the local habitat.
Brazilian Wildlife in Depth Holiday, 11 nights from £6,295 per person (based on two sharing) includes return flights, activities, accommodation and some meals. Visit: rainbowtours.co.uk (0203 930 2552)
Penguins and whales in Antarctica
For a sense of true exploration, beyond what many people will ever experience, travelling to the least-visited, and virtually uninhabited, most-southerly continent has to be up there. The world’s oldest expedition cruise company, HX Expeditions, offers a 12-day cruise to see some of the world’s rarest wildlife.
See penguins court and nest in October and November, and their chicks hatch in December and January. February and March is the best time to see blue, humpback, minke, sperm and beaked whales. Roughly 50% of the world’s orcas are thought to live in Antarctic waters too. The hybrid battery-powered ship reduces emissions and results in minimal noise, for a better environmental impact. With an onboard science centre also providing educational resources, travellers can really gain an understanding about the ecosystems around them, aiming to inspire a duty of care for visitors to this incredible place.
HX Expeditions Highlights of Antarctica expedition cruise is all-inclusive but doesn’t include flights. Starting from £7,576pp with an anniversary offer of free suite upgrade. Visit: travelhx.com.
Bengal tigers in India
Attenborough’s landmark BBC series Asia showcased Bengal tigers in central India. The country’s national parks offer travellers the chance to see these elusive creatures – the national animal of India and one of the biggest wild cats in the world. Today though, they’re threatened by poaching and habitat loss, and listed as endangered with an estimated 4,500 remaining in the wild across Asia.
Selective Asia offers a 13-day safari journey across India’s premier wildlife reserves. Beginning in Delhi and going into three national parks – Panna, Bandhavgarh, and Kanha. As well as trying to spot a Bengal, guests will explore diverse ecosystems and may encounter other rare species like the Barasingha, a breed of deer now extinct in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Designed for wildlife enthusiasts, the trip combines game drives with cultural immersion – including a visit to the Taj Mahal and the ancient temples of Khajuraho.
The Walk on the Wild Side tour starts from £3,990 per person (not including international flights). Visit Selectiveasia.com.

Step into a home that feels entirely your own. The soft glow of morning light filters across perfectly fitted wardrobes, every line clean, every detail intentional. Storage disappears seamlessly into the architecture, and clutter becomes a thing of the past. This is not just furniture — it’s a transformation of space, designed around how you live. And at the heart of it is Custom Creations.
At Custom Creations, the philosophy is simple yet powerful: design inspired by you. It’s a phrase that goes beyond marketing — it defines an entire process built around individuality. From the very first consultation, their team works closely with you in your own home, understanding not just measurements, but lifestyle, habits, and aspirations. The result is furniture that doesn’t just fit your space — it fits you.

Their services span every corner of the home. Bedrooms become calm, organised sanctuaries with bespoke fitted wardrobes, including sliding, hinged, and walkin designs. Living spaces are elevated with custom media walls, cabinetry, and storage solutions that feel both elegant and practical. Even the most awkward areas — angled ceilings, alcoves, or under-stairs spaces — are transformed into purposeful, beautifully crafted features. Custom Creations also extends its expertise to home offices, children’s rooms, and commercial projects, ensuring every environment benefits from thoughtful, made-to-measure design.
What sets them apart is not just the breadth of what they offer, but how they deliver it. With over 40 years of experience and a family-run ethos, the company combines traditional craftsmanship with modern precision. Every piece is handcrafted in their Dorset workshop by skilled joiners, then installed by in-house professionals who treat your home with care and respect. This continuity — from design to manufacture to fitting — ensures a level of quality and accountability that is increasingly rare.

There’s also reassurance in their approach. Designers don’t work on commission, meaning advice is honest and tailored rather than sales-driven. A 25-year guarantee underlines their confidence in the durability of their work, while their reputation for professionalism and attention to detail is echoed by consistently positive customer experiences.
Choosing a trusted local company like Custom Creations is about more than convenience — it’s about connection. There’s a tangible difference when the people designing your furniture are invested in their craft and their community. Their showroom in Verwood invites you to explore finishes, textures, and possibilities in person, turning inspiration into something real and achievable.
Ultimately, this is about more than storage or aesthetics. It’s about creating a home that works effortlessly around you — a place where every detail has been considered, and every inch has purpose. Once you experience that level of design, it’s hard to imagine living any other way.

Spring has long been the season of renewal. As daylight stretches further into the evening and the first warmth returns to the air, many homeowners take the opportunity to refresh their living spaces. Windows are opened, gardens revived, and cupboards cleared. It’s the annual ritual of the spring clean — a chance to reset the home after the darker months.

sits a complex electrical system — one that works tirelessly in all weathers, year after year.
And like any hardworking system, it benefits from attention.
But while most people focus their attention indoors, there is one part of the house that rarely makes the spring-cleaning checklist: the roof.
For thousands of households across the UK, that roof is quietly doing something remarkable. Solar panels are capturing sunlight, generating electricity and helping reduce both energy bills and environmental impact. Yet behind the neat rows of panels
Solar energy is often described as a “fit and forget” technology. Once installed, it seems to simply get on with the job. In many ways that’s true — modern systems are designed to be reliable and efficient. But it’s easy to forget that a solar installation is effectively a small power station sitting above your home.
Cables, connectors, mounting systems and electrical components are exposed to the elements 365 days a year. Over time, weather, temperature changes and natural wear can affect performance and integrity in ways that aren’t immediately visible from the ground.
That’s where professional oversight becomes invaluable.
Tincleton Solar Systems specialises in helping homeowners understand exactly how their solar installation is performing — and whether it remains safe, efficient and compliant. Their Solar System Inspection & Investigation Service offers a comprehensive assessment that goes far beyond a simple glance at the panels.
A full inspection looks at the entire installation: the roof structure, mounting integrity, wiring, inverter performance and overall electrical safety. The result is a detailed engineering report that provides homeowners with clear insights into the condition of their system and practical recommendations where needed.
It’s not about creating alarm — it’s about creating clarity.
Many solar systems will continue to generate electricity even if small issues begin to develop. Loose connections, degraded wiring or minor shading problems can gradually reduce performance without obvious warning signs. By identifying these early, corrective action is often straightforward and relatively inexpensive.
In other words, a little attention today can protect the value of a much larger investment tomorrow.
Spring is also an ideal moment to check on systems that have been quietly weathering winter storms, heavy rain and cold

temperatures. Just as homeowners might inspect fences, gutters or roof tiles after winter, reviewing a solar installation ensures everything remains secure and functioning as intended.
There is another practical consideration too: insurance.
As solar technology becomes more common, insurers are paying closer attention to how systems are installed and maintained. Documentation showing that a solar installation has been professionally inspected can provide valuable reassurance that the system meets safety and compliance expectations.
For homeowners who purchased a property with existing panels — something increasingly common — an inspection can be particularly useful. It answers the questions many people quietly wonder about: Was the system installed correctly? Is it performing as it should? Is it still compliant with current standards?
The answers provide peace of mind that is difficult to put a price on.

Solar energy remains one of the most positive investments a household can make. It offers cleaner energy, greater independence from fluctuating energy costs and a meaningful contribution to a more sustainable future. But like any important asset within the home, it deserves thoughtful stewardship.

A spring clean shouldn’t stop at the front door. Taking the time to understand the health of your solar system ensures that it continues to work for you — safely, efficiently and reliably — for many years to come. With expert insight from specialists such as Tincleton Solar Systems, homeowners can move into the brighter months ahead confident that the technology above their heads is performing exactly as it should. Style up your outdoor space with seating, lighting and decorative flourishes, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
When it comes to good vibes and that happy, carefree feeling when relaxing under a blue sky, there’s nothing quite like pulling up a chair in your own private sanctuary.
Whether it’s a garden escape, bijou balcony or pukka patio, there’s a growing trend for transforming outdoor spaces into immersive, restorative retreats.
Indeed, think a wellness garden where you can recline, a dedicated area for relaxation, and focus on al fresco slow living; where thoughtful design and furnishings take centre stage.

Here’s how to create this season’s most coveted destination, without leaving home…
“As summer approaches, we naturally start seeking ways to capture that holiday feeling… longer days remind us that a getaway doesn’t always require a plane ticket,” highlights Daniel Smith, founder of furniture brand Danetti, who are celebrating their 20th year of championing quiet luxury.
“Sometimes it’s as simple as creating a corner of the garden to unwind, entertain, and soak up the evening sun.
“Whether it’s a daybed that transforms a small patio into a relaxed lounge; or a large dining table that turns weeknight meals into al fresco escapes, the right setup can make all the difference.”
ABOVE

Moreover, he says when a garden feels inviting and thoughtfully designed, it becomes a true extension of the home. “Choose layouts and furniture that offer the same comfort and luxury you enjoy indoors.
“Swap rigid wooden chairs for plush seating upholstered in tactile fabrics, with deep seats and wide arms – instant cues that signal a welcoming, sophisticated space, much like hosting a dinner party inside,” suggests Smith.
Modular sofas, long loved for their versatility indoors, work just as well outdoors, he underlines. “They adapt effortlessly to the way you use the space, whether hosting a lively summer gathering or carving out a quiet retreat.”
Built with materials engineered to thrive outside, they provide the same comfort and personalisation you expect indoors, notes Smith.

“From generously cushioned seats to layouts that shift with the seasons.”
“Finish the space with layered textures and luxury touches,” he advises. “Marble veining, patterned rugs, soft candlelight, and fresh flowers all help the garden feel complete, warm, and inviting rather than merely functional.”
Helen Pett, brand ambassador in the UK for highend luxury lifestyle label Arteriors, who has extensive experience in the furniture industry, says: “With gardens coming into full bloom and so much natural colour and movement at play the elemental landscape is the perfect backdrop to your summer setting.”
“We’re seeing shapes play a key role when choosing garden furniture and a favourite this year will be curved sofas and lounge chairs.
“Curves have the power to evoke a sense of fluidity, bringing a softness and balance. They can mirror the natural shapes found in planting and pathways, enhancing the garden’s organic flow.”
As well as larger open planned settings, she says there’s a surge in demand for lounge chairs that can be tucked away in a special place, “creating a moment of escapism.”
This cocooning effect invites us to slow down and find solitude, suggests Pett.
“Where space allows, sculptural chairs with draping silhouettes reminiscent of meandering streams strengthen that connection to the environment.
“And provide the perfect retreat to lounge or simply gaze up at the sky.”
Aesthetically pleasing, she says handwoven finishes elevated from fibres like rattan or teak bring a natural rhythm to the underlying feeling of connection.
“Grounding the scheme in craftsmanship and materiality… balance these textures with tones that take their inspiration from nature-like warm sands, olive greens and sun-bleached terracottas to create a calming oasis,” suggests Pett.
Another way to maximise your living area is by creating an indoor-outdoor flow… fast becoming a lifestyle choice, with lighting playing a key role.

“The right fixtures don’t just brighten an outdoor area but they transform it, adding style, creating ambience and blurring the lines between indoors and out,” says Mara Rypacek Miller, founder of Industville, who’ve been creating design-led, considered lighting since 2013.
Depending on your scheme, she says 2026 outdoor lighting trends are giving industrial classics a modern twist.
“Bulkhead lights are back, now softened with sleek lines and decorative glass lenses such as fluted, rippled or hammered to cast a gentle, diffused glow.”
And when it comes to planning outdoor lighting, she says layering is just as important as it is indoors.
“Pair low-set bulkheads with an overhead wall light to bathe seating areas in warmth, and create the perfect atmosphere for long, relaxed summer evenings.”
Rypacek Miller continues. “Covered patios or garden nooks offer the perfect opportunity to create wow factor with statement pendants or flush-mount ceiling lights, resulting in ambient settings that are ideal for al fresco dining or late-night card games.”Choosing fixtures with flowing curves is a great way to complement the organic forms of nature, perfectly complementing a garden, and setting an instantly relaxed mood,” she adds.

It features a blacked-out design treatment, including a black front grille, black logo suite across the vehicle, and a black “Luxury” C-pillar badge. Further full black detailing includes black mirrors, roof, wheels and roof rails, as well as interior elements such as a black headliner and sun visors.

Alongside the Black Luxury edition, the new JAECOO 7 SHS-H introduces a fullhybrid variant for the first time, offering a convenient route into electrified driving without the need to plug in. It is available in two trim levels – Pure and Deluxe – with prices starting from £29,195 and £32,795 respectively. Pure grade comes with tweed cloth upholstery, a 13-inch infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto, refrigerated centre-console, dual-zone

climate control, and a 6-speaker sound system, plus front and rear parking sensors as standard. The Deluxe model builds on this, adding eco-leather upholstery, an 8-speaker sound system and a 14-inch infotainment screen, among other upgrades.
Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a self-charging hybrid system, delivering 224 PS, a 0 - 62 mph time of 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 112 mph. As a powertrain dedicated to hybrid use, the 1.5-litre unit offers an extra-urban fuel economy of 53 mpg.
These new variants arrive as JAECOO in the UK builds on the momentum of an impressive debut year. With more than 35,000 new vehicle registrations here in the UK since launch and a rapidly expanding dealer network, electrification has played a central role in that growth.
All JAECOO 7 variants – including these two new additions – are supported by the brand’s 7-year/100,000-mile warranty, with one year of complimentary RAC breakdown cover included as standard. The all-new JAECOO 7 SHS-P Black Luxury and the JAECOO 7 SHS-H will be available to order from May 2026.

To celebrate the 50-year anniversary of its five-cylinder engine, Audi is unveiling an exclusive special-edition model: the RS 3 competition limited. With just 750 examples to be built worldwide, it stands as a final hurrah for a five-decade-long Audi success story. The inline five combines extraordinary performance with an unmistakable sound.
A legacy that began in 1976 with the second-generation Audi 100 is now at its height with the Audi RS 3 competition limited. To mark “50 years of five cylinders,” the German car maker has enhanced the RS 3 with numerous upgrades that will undoubtedly make the special edition highly sought after by collectors.
Sportiness informs all visual features of the Audi RS 3 – starting with matte carbon elements. These include two new canards on either front corner, which are arranged on top of each other and are made of carbon to match the vertical blades of the air curtains. Combined with the now split front lip, which is fitted below the intakes, this makes the car appear even wider.

The 19-inch wheels with 10 cross spokes are finished in Neodymium gold matte and very much fill the arches. Mirror caps, side skirts, and a rear spoiler, all in matte carbon, as well as the matte carbon trim above the large functional diffuser complete the car’s rather technical appearance. Partial matting on the rear side window to show the model’s name underlines it even further. The darkened matrix LED headlights are also unique to the special edition.
In the UK, all 11 examples will be finished in Malachite green. This iconic colour is reminiscent of the Audi Sport quattro that provided the basis for a golden age of rallying with five-cylinder power.
Back in 1983, the Audi Sport quattro developed 306 PS and 350 Nm from 2.1 litres of displacement. Today, the inline fivecylinder engine of the Audi RS comes with 2.5 litres of displacement and boasts 400

PS and 500 Nm. The model accelerates from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 180mph.
Inside the car there’s a colour combination of black, Neodymium gold, and Ginger white. The door lighting projects the lettering “RS 3 competition limited” with the same adorning the black floor mats, the cover below the headrests, and the boot carpet. In the centre console, a matte serial number in front of the gear shift lever reflects the model’s limited run.

In the UK, the RS 3 competition limited is priced from £92,855 and deliveries of the 11 cars destined for the UK will begin towards the end of the year.

The BMW 3 Series is the very essence of the BMW brand and, for five decades, has been an iconic model for the German car maker. The new all-electric BMW i3 builds upon this legacy while taking a technological quantum leap into a new electric era.
BMW claim the new i3 is capable of covering of up to 560 miles on a single charge. The range launches with the 50 xDrive model variant, which is powered by two electric motors which drive the front and rear axle to develop a combined system output of 469 hp and 645 Nm of torque.
The i3 offers a modern interpretation of hallmark BMW Saloon design with its new 2.5-box silhouette. Its design is characterised by a long wheelbase with short overhangs and a sloping roofline. The front-end is sculpted in a shark-nose design and centred around a horizontal kidney grille.
Inside, positioned front and centre is the BMW Panoramic iDrive, which consists of four key components: the BMW Panoramic Vision display, the optional BMW 3D Head-
Up Display, the driver-oriented Central Display and the new multi-function steering wheel. Electrically operated door openers at the front and rear and the centre console between the driver and passenger seats includes a storage area with inductive charging function.
Customers will be able to customise the interior and exterior of their i3 with different trim levels, including M Sport, following its success within the UK market. Eleven exterior paint finishes are available from launch, including new M Le Castellet Blue – exclusive to the BMW i3.

Customers will have comprehensive options for personalisation in the areas of lighting, sound, displays and drives via My Modes with modes such as Sport, Efficient and Silent.
The new BMW i3 will continue to receive new functions, optimised performance, or AI- supported features via software updates long after purchase. All future BMW models will feature the electronics and software architecture developed for the Neue Klasse.
The new i3 will be built at the home of BMW Group, Munich, which has been producing vehicles for over a century. Over the last four years, the production plant has seen significant modernisation with the construction of a new body shop, cuttingedge assembly facility and logistics space. Now in its final stages of expansion, Plant Munich will commence BMW i3 production in August, with first UK customer deliveries expected in autumn.
Further information, including UK pricing and detailed model specifications will follow in due course.
Honda have a well-deserved reputation for quality and reliability and it’s not only their latest models either, with older Hondas regularly featuring highly in used car surveys. They may, arguably, not be the most exciting cars but many people, even if they have their exciting sports models, often need a comfortable and reliable car for every day, practical use. Hondas fit the bill perfectly!
The HR-V e:HEV is the company’s small SUV that combines both petrol and electric to produce an eminently useable car that combines the best of electric with the, at the moment, more practical petrol power. The combination works well to both reduce emissions and increase MPG without the need for stopping and plugging in to charge.

Prices start at £32,725 and peak at £39,395 with five trim levels and a generous standard equipment list across the range. All models come with wireless CarPlay, heated front seats, navigation, front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera, rear privacy glass, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control and three drive modes.

One engine choice provides the power for all models in the range, a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol unit aligned to not one but two electric motors for a combined 131PS. The e:CVT automatic gearbox is probably the only thing that merits any complaint about the HR-V. It’s a characteristic with all these units, not just on Hondas, that when you accelerate hard, the engine will instantly rise to high revs and stay there while the speed catches up. This creates a

constant “droning” noise, which is almost unpleasantly noisy under hard acceleration, smooth and progressive acceleration is key to restoring the normal Honda refinement. It’s a knack of driving that is easily mastered and makes life more aurally pleasant. The redeeming feature of the gearbox, in this old-fashioned writer’s view, is the fact it has a proper gearshift lever!
On the road the HR-V is impressively refined (gearbox issues apart) and smooth as one would expect from Honda, there are no rattles or flimsiness and the interior is a delight, feeling suitably premium. The ride quality is excellent, soaking up the bumps and potholes well, and considering it’s not the kind of car built for enthusiastic pointto-point drives across country the handling is very good too.
In short, if you need a premium, comfortable, well equipped and comfortable car that’s practical for any and every kind of use, the HR-V is quite possibly the one that will tick all your motoring boxes.

Ford has seen many of its familiar names, familiar for many years, disappear with the demise of the Fiesta, Focus and a while back the Mondeo. Much public and ‘expert’ comment ensued and it’s probably fair to say much of it wasn’t favourable to Ford.
Back in 2024 Ford announced the arrival of the Ford Explorer, not the large, big engine off-road SUV from the late 1990s but an all-electric SUV. When so many cars share platforms and parts, styling tends to be rather homogeneous but the Explorer is a bit of a welcome change since it has a touch of individuality. While styling is always subjective many who saw the Explorer were rather taken.
Three versions of the Explorer are on offer –the Style, Premium and Select – with prices starting at £35,285. Standard fare includes LED lights with high beam assist, adaptive cruise control, navigation, dual zone climate, auto dimming rear view mirror, rear privacy glass, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.
In lead-in form the 170PS Explorer, with rear wheel drive and 52kwh battery, passes the benchmark 62 mph in 8.7 seconds and has a range of 233 miles. Adding additional KWH for the extended rear drive version means 286PS and 374 miles with the allwheel-drive extended range at 79kwh and 340PS offering 329 miles of range.
The interesting point to note is not so much the ultimate range but also the miles per kwh, which in the Explorer’s case was pretty consistently over 3 miles per kwh. It makes the Explorer a usefully practical EV.

The usual bolt-on iPad style central screen is large, as with shared VW ID models the driver’s information screen is a little too small for all the information displayed, although the clarity is excellent. Some of the controls can be annoying, notably the slider control for the sound system and the fact that the light switches are to the right of the steering wheel and obscured from view by the steering wheel and steering column mounted gear shift.
On the road the Explorer rides well although at higher speeds there’s a touch more road noise than I would have expected. The Explorer handles tightly, a trait of Fords across the years and thanks to very comfortable sculptured seats, and on the mid-range premium model, a panoramic roof, with lighter undertones within the interior it makes it a pleasant place to be on any journey.
Ford may have lost some of its great names but doubters should get behind the wheel of the Explorer. I suspect they may be pleasantly surprised.

The chef speaks to Eleanor Fleming as he releases his latest book, JapanEasy Kitchen.
MasterChef winner Tim Anderson says everyone can “level up all (their) cooking” using just five Japanese ingredients, taking their food to “flavour town”.
What’s more, the father-of-two, who lives in London, says these ingredients are readily available from most supermarkets now –and they won’t break the bank.
“Japanese food has just been in this perpetual motion machine of popularity –the more people learn about it, the more they like it,” says Anderson, who won the BBC cookery show in 2011.
“So, things are different now. More people are cooking it, which is great, and more people have the ingredients on hand.
“It’s actually amazing how available they are. In fact, I was just doing my normal weekly shop the other day and noticed that there are even more brands of ponzu available, for example.
“Japanese seasonings are a shortcut to flavour town”.
Born and raised in Wisconsin, the 41-yearold has been studying Japanese food culture for more than two decades.
However, he says he did not “come across” Japanese food until his teens – and his curiosity for it was sparked when he started watching a cooking show called Iron Chef.

ABOVE
Kitchen | Quadrille/PA
Growing up, he says he mainly ate meals such as pasta, meat and vegetables, casseroles, chicken pot pie, Wisconsin specialties like “beer bratwurst” and pizza, with the “most exotic” being Mexican food.
In high school, he says his “image of Japanese food” was limited, mainly focusing on “the classics” such as sushi and Yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). “I don’t think I had any Japanese food at all until I was a teenager,” he says. “There wasn’t a single Japanese restaurant in my hometown.
“There were a few here and there in Milwaukee, but I didn’t know about it until
I was a teenager, and that’s when I started watching Iron Chef – and that’s what set it all off.
“So after that, I started going to these limited restaurants in Wisconsin and Chicago – I grew up not far from Chicago –and trying the odd recipe at home.
“Then I went to school in LA, I went to college there, partly because I knew that there was more Japanese food to experience and learn about.”
Anderson says venturing to LA “expanded [his] horizons”, but it was not until he moved to Japan and lived there that he truly fell in love with the cuisine.
He says trying ramen changed his life – and even now, ramen would form part of his ‘death row meal’.
He continues: “It was ramen after I moved to LA that really became my obsession, especially with tonkotsu ramen, which is why I wanted to move to Kyushu after I graduated because that’s the home of ramen.
“I tried, for years, to make ramen and that’s what my restaurant was based on, but while I was in Kyushu, that’s when I got to understand the local food culture in Japan.
“Everywhere you go, every prefecture, every city, every little town, they all have not just one but multiple local specialties to try.”

Anderson says Japanese food is “not very easy to even define or contain”, but this means “there is just no end” to his recipe ideas.
He has already published nine cookbooks, but his latest, JapanEasy Kitchen, features simple recipes, centred on a core selection of go-to Japanese ingredients.
Anderson says the top five ingredients that everyone should have in their cupboard are Japanese soy sauce; Japanese or short grain rice; dashi powder, which is a stock; mirin, a rice wine; and miso. While these ingredients are affordable, he recommends spending more on a hon mirin, which translates to “true mirin”, where possible.
“For this book, for JapanEasy Kitchen, I wanted to make it as easy as possible, so I set a no deep frying rule,” he says. “Plus, lots of people have these ingredients already, so my thought was, let’s get people using them.
“It’s not so much about getting people to use the specific recipes – obviously that’s the point of any cookbook – but to get people to build their confidence using them as a matter of routine.
“So, goal one is get people using Japanese ingredients and cooking Japanese food on a regular basis, and goal two is improve all your cooking by familiarity with Japanese seasonings.
“It’s about how to improve all your cooking, level up all your cooking, using the power of Japanese ingredients.”
With his book, Anderson says people will learn to cook recipes such as katsu curry parmo and no-churn soy sauce caramel ice cream, along with other dishes with a Japanese twist, and many are vegan or vegetarian.
For a complete beginner, Anderson suggests trying the scampi rice bowl as it is “simple, delicious and a crowd-pleaser”, and it uses four out of those five key ingredients – dashi, soy sauce, mirin and rice.
There are more than 100 recipes in the book, but he says the recipe he is “most proud of” is a tofumisu, which is a vegan tiramisu.
He hopes others enjoy experimenting with Japanese ingredients in their cooking as much as he does. “I started off with a much larger shortlist of recipes, because the brief is limitless,” he says. “But as long as it’s using Japanese ingredients, I could do anything, really.
“Everybody’s got a dish, eating Japanese food, or multiple dishes that they want to learn, so I’d say focus on those and then you will learn about other things along the way.”

JapanEasy Kitchen by Tim Anderson, is published in hardback by Quadrille, priced £26. Photography by Patricia Niven.

1tbsp butter
65g plain flour
250ml milk
½ pack (45–50g) curry roux
100ml water
120g panko
4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts
Salt, pepper and MSG, as needed
Vegetable oil, for shallow-frying
150g medium Cheddar or Red Leicester (or a mix of both), grated Japanese pickles, ideally pickled ginger or fukujinzuke, as needed, to serve

INGREDIENTS
1tbsp olive oil
30g butter
30 grinds of black pepper, plus a little more to finish
30g white miso
150g spaghetti or linguine
Grated Pecorino cheese, to garnish (optional)
1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over a medium-high heat and whisk in 15 grams of the flour.
2. Pour in the milk, a little at a time, whisking as you go, then bring to the boil while whisking frequently to form a smooth, thick sauce.
3. Add the curry roux and whisk to dissolve and thicken even more. When the roux is completely dissolved, remove from the heat.
4. In a large bowl or dish, whisk together the water and the remaining flour to make a batter. Place the panko in a separate bowl or dish.
5. Butterfly the breasts by cutting through them horizontally, almost all the way to the other side, so you can open them up like a book and lay them flat. Season them with salt, pepper and MSG. Dredge the seasoned chicken in the batter, then in the panko, pressing down on the breadcrumbs to ensure an even coating.
6. Preheat the grill to medium. Pour enough oil into a wide pan to come up to a depth of about one centimetre and set it over a medium-high heat. Every now and then, check its temperature by tossing some breadcrumbs into the oil. When they sizzle rapidly, the oil is hot enough.
7. Carefully lower the chicken cutlets into the oil – you will likely only be able to cook two at a time. Cook for five to six minutes on each side until well browned and cooked through.
8. Transfer the chicken to a wire rack set over a roasting tray. Spoon a generous amount of the curry sauce onto each chicken cutlet, then cover them in grated cheese and slide under the grill. Cook for about five minutes until the cheese is fully melted, bubbly and beginning to brown.
9. Serve piping hot, with pickles and rice, chips or salad.
2
1. Heat the olive oil and butter together in a frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the pepper and let it sizzle in the foaming butter for a few minutes, then whisk in the miso until no lumps remain.
2. Remove the pan from the heat and cook the pasta according to the package instructions.
3. In the final one to two minutes of cooking the pasta, add two ladlefuls of pasta water to the miso-butter mixture and raise the heat to bring it to the boil. If it’s very watery, let it reduce in the pan for one to two minutes, but don’t let it get too thick – the consistency should be more milky than creamy.
4. Drain the pasta and tip it into the pan, then quickly toss it through the sauce, switch off the heat and dish up. Garnish, if you like, with grated Pecorino or some furikake.

MAKES ABOUT 600ML
INGREDIENTS
300ml whipping cream
200g dulce de leche (milk caramel)
2tbsp icing sugar
1tbsp vanilla bean paste
1–2tbsp soy sauce (to taste)
This recipe only requires two steps – but it’s ‘delicious’. “I whipped this up (literally) when I was looking to use up half a can of dulce de leche and some whipping cream,” chef Tim Anderson says. “I have never rushed to write down a recipe so quickly. It’s DELICIOUS.”
1. Combine everything in a large mixing bowl and use an electric whisk to whip the mixture until it is thick and airy, and holds soft peaks.
2. Note: start with a little soy sauce and taste halfway through whipping, then add a little more if you want it saltier.
3. Transfer to a container and freeze until set.

There’s something deeply satisfying about a meal that feels like an occasion without ever feeling like hard work. The kind of place where the welcome is warm, the wine arrives without fuss, and conversation somehow stretches long past dessert.
Bates Restaurant in Charminster has been quietly perfecting that experience for more than 18 years — and locals have been returning ever since.

Family-run by John and Cheryl Bates, this is the sort of restaurant that reminds you why going out for dinner should still feel special. Not because it’s flashy or trying too hard, but because everything is done properly. The dining room feels intimate and relaxed, the service is attentive without hovering, and there’s an easy confidence that comes from years of getting the basics absolutely right.
Picture it: a Friday evening with friends, the table already laughing before the starters arrive. Someone orders the homemade pâté, someone else goes for king prawns in the chef’s café de Paris butter, and suddenly there’s that collective pause as everyone realises they’ve chosen well. Glasses are topped up, stories get better with each retelling, and the week starts to melt away.
Or maybe it’s Sunday lunch with family — the sort where no one’s checking the time because there’s nowhere else they’d rather be. Bates has built a loyal following for its traditional roasts, generous portions and proper homemade cooking. Think topside of beef, leg of lamb, roast potatoes done exactly as they should be, fresh vegetables and rich gravy that makes you briefly consider drinking it like soup. This is comfort food elevated by care, not pretension.

What really sets Bates apart is that rare balance between quality and comfort. The menu is broad enough to please everyone at the table, with meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan options, daily specials and homemade desserts that have developed something of a local following. It’s the sort of place where birthdays feel memorable, anniversaries feel properly marked, and even an ordinary Tuesday can feel unexpectedly lovely.
In a world full of rushed meals and forgettable dining chains, Bates Restaurant offers something far more appealing: a genuinely good time. Great food, kind service and the simple pleasure of sitting around a table with people you like. Sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

Good eye care should do two things brilliantly: help you see clearly and make you feel good while doing it. At Whiffens Opticians, they’ve been getting both spot on since 1984.

Based in the heart of Lower Parkstone, Whiffens is the kind of independent optician people return to year after year — not just because they know their stuff, but because they make the whole experience feel refreshingly human. No conveyor belt appointments. No rushed decisions. Just expert advice, proper care and a team that genuinely wants you to leave seeing — and feeling — better.
Let’s be honest: eye tests don’t usually top anyone’s list of thrilling life experiences. Somewhere between booking the appointment and trying not to blink during the puff-of-air bit, most of us are simply hoping to get through it with our dignity intact.
Whiffens manages to make the process feel far less clinical and far more reassuring. Their comprehensive eye examinations are designed not only to check your vision, but to keep an eye on your long-term health too. With advanced OCT scanning and thorough assessments, they can help spot early signs of conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration — often before symptoms become obvious. In other words, they’re not just helping you read menus; they’re helping protect your future eyesight.
Of course, seeing clearly is only half the story. If you’re going to wear glasses every day, they should feel like you — not like an unfortunate compromise made under strip lighting.
That’s where Whiffens really comes into its own. Their range of designer glasses means choosing frames feels less like a chore and more like a treat. Whether your style is understated, bold, timeless or somewhere between “quiet luxury” and “look at me, I’ve

finally got my life together”, they’ll help you find something that suits both your face and your personality.
Their collections include sought-after names such as Prada, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren and RayBan, alongside quality options for different budgets. They also offer sunglasses, prescription lenses, contact lenses and expert fittings, so whatever your lifestyle, there’s a solution that works for you.
What really sets Whiffens apart, though, is the balance they strike: professional without being intimidating, stylish without being pushy, and experienced without ever becoming impersonal.
In short, Whiffens Opticians understands that good vision is about more than eyesight. It’s about confidence, comfort and feeling like the best version of yourself — whether you’re reading the small print, driving home at night, or just trying to find your phone when it’s been in your hand all along.

There’s never a wrong time to start something new — and Thai boxing is one of the most powerful ways to build fitness, confidence, and strength. After busy weeks of juggling family life, school runs, and endless to-do lists, many mums reach a point where they’re ready to focus on themselves again — to move, sweat, and feel strong.
Starting a new routine is about creating healthy habits that last. Thai boxing delivers a full-body workout that burns calories, builds strength, improves coordination, and boosts energy levels. Just as importantly, it o ers huge mental benefits. Hitting pads, learning new skills, and pushing past personal limits helps relieve stress, clear your head, and build confidence.

No experience is needed. Every session is designed to help beginners feel comfortable and supported, while still o ering progression and challenge as you grow stronger.

The 9:30am morning class is ideal for mums. It fits perfectly after school dropo , allowing you to train without rushing or sacrificing family time. Morning training sets a positive tone for the rest of the day — you’ll leave feeling energised, focused, and accomplished, rather than drained later on.
This is a welcoming, supportive environment where you can train alongside other mums who are on the same journey. There’s no ego and no pressure — just a space to learn, laugh, and get fit together.
Whether your goal is to lose weight, build strength, try something new, or simply enjoy some well-earned “me time,” the
9:30am Thai boxing class o ers the perfect balance of challenge and support.
Whenever you decide to start, make it about you. Train strong, feel confident, and move forward with purpose.
