Lord Montagu of Beaulieu has presented award certificates at the National Motor Museum to students who successfully participated in the Mechanix course and restored a classic yellow 1973 Volkswagen Beetle.
Jon Murden, Chief Executive of the National Motor Museum says, “Every year a local church youth group run a course for young people to learn about cars. This year the “Mechanix” group in Hythe have done an amazing job of restoring a Beetle which was found in a modified state in Plymouth. I’m delighted to have met the young people who worked so hard and learned so much restoring it.”
“Whilst we are a national museum, this course happens to be run on our doorstep, so I am especially pleased that we have been able to host the presentation once again. The course offers a great opportunity for students to learn the skills which will be needed in the years ahead when some of the cars of today need repair and restoration.”
Mechanix sees a group of young people aged 14-17 with no prior car mechanic experience challenged to bring cars up to MOT level during evening courses. The students repaired the VW Beetle in a working garage in Dibden, learning essential car maintenance activities, taking part in a ‘pit
stop challenge’ and carrying out practical MOT test procedures in the process. The course provides an opportunity to develop their skills inspiring some of the students to become professional mechanics.
This Mechanix course was organised by St Andrew’s & All Saints’ Church in Dibden, Hampshire. Major local businesses including Shawfix Autos, ExxonMobil, and Draper Tools played a pivotal role in supporting the course.
Reuben Shaw from Shawfix Autos says, “We are really pleased that these students have gained several practical skills and learnt about teamwork. The personal development goals that they each achieved are a real credit to them. I’d like to thank the volunteers, parents and sponsors who have shown great support to these students.”
Reverend Peter Toller of St Andrew’s Church, Dibden Purlieu says, “People often ask why a church is running a project involving cars. Whilst Mechanix is about spending time under the bonnet, it’s also about investing time in young people. We want to show young people they matter, that we see them, and we’re interested in their future flourishing. In this way, we’re following Jesus’ example. Our aim is for young people to grow in workplace skills and confidence to equip them for the future. Our prayer is that they know they matter.”

Marwell Zoo is helping to secure the future of one of the world’s rarest horse species as two Endangered Przewalski’s horses are set to return to the wild in their native Kazakhstan.
Shara and Togs, two female Przewalski’s horses born and raised at Marwell Zoo, are being reintroduced as part of ongoing international efforts to save the species from extinction.
Previously listed Extinct in the Wild on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List from 1969 until 2008, the horses have made a remarkable comeback thanks to dedicated breeding and reintroduction programmes led by conservation organisations across Europe, including Marwell.
The horses’ return to the wild is another important step forward in Marwell’s longstanding work with the species which has played a vital role in their re-classification to ‘Endangered’ in 2011.
Shara and Togs will first travel to Berlin, where they will join a larger group of horses who have been earmarked for release in Kazakhstan. The re-introduction is part of the Return of the Wild Horses project lead by the Prague Zoo with European partners
MARWELL ZOO www.marwell.org.uk

Tierpark Berlin, the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) and Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), among others.
Przewalski’s horses typically live in harems consisting of a group of females and one stallion. Foals will stay with the harem until they are two-three years old, at which point males form bachelor groups before attempting to establish their own harems at around five years of age.
Przewalski’s horses are now listed as Endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species with populations increasing thanks to zoo breeding programmes such as Marwell’s.
In the mid 18th Century wild Przewalski’s horses would have been found from the Russian Steppes east to Kazakhstan, Mongolia and northern China.

is playful approa to interior design is an ode to colour and pattern, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
If super-bright furnishings are right up your street, and minimalism leaves you feeling lacklustre, then a dash of clownish charm could be just the ticket.
Striking the perfect balance between bold colours, eye-catching prints and a nod to the circus big top, the FunHaus trend is all about infusing a sense of joyous theatricality into everyday spaces.
“After years of minimalism and neutral interiors, the FunHaus aesthetic has emerged to reflect our desire for more playful, expressive homes,” highlights John Rastall, head of commercial for DFS Home. “Think bold stripes and abstract silhouettes, balanced with a paredback colour palette for a dose of sophistication.”
If you’re not sure where to kick-off, Rastall suggests starting in the bedroom…
“A joyful way to introduce personality into bedroom design, nodding to a more youthful and playful energy… without sacrificing comfort and cosiness.”
He says to begin with a statement-making headboard, with plush ribbed panelling. “Set this against a backdrop of a dramatic striped wallpaper to create a feeling of big-top grandeur.”

Choosing both hero pieces and accents, such as an armchair, in rich, opulent fabrics like velvet will instantly elevate the look, says Rastall.
“Adding a sense of luxury that balances with the more playful elements of the design.”
He continues: “Layering patterns and shapes is key to the lively nature of this trend, but be sure to keep the palette simple – soft pinks, light blues, maroons and creamy whites – to ensure the space feels curated rather than chaotic.”
To make your space look cohesive, dress the bed with a thoughtful mix of plain and patterned accessories, suggests Rastall.
“Geometric cushions pair unexpectedly well with stripes, whilst frilled edges add a feminine touch that softens bolder repeats.”

Building on the playful ambience, he says to echo the sculptural silhouette of a statement headboard throughout the space, “bringing in other rounded or arched forms to subtly reference classic circus motifs.”
Think a curved accent chair adding comfort and visual interest. “Creating an inviting corner, offering a moment of calm which balances well with the energising nature of this look,” Rastall adds.
Nailed the bedroom and feeling ready to take the leap and introduce FunHaus into your living area?

Daniel Smith, founder of Danetti, says: “Although this is a bold aesthetic, there are simple and effective ways you can bring it into the home without it feeling excessive.”
“Unexpected accents, shapes and colours can work together alongside elegant textures and finishes for a look that blends contemporary style with everyday ease.”
To create a dynamic interplay of elements that feel both “theatrical and refined,” Smith says to opt for “sculptural silhouettes that explore proportion.”
“A dining table with a fluted pedestal base combined with an exaggerated dining chair and tiered lighting will offer a subtle nod to the trend’s expressive energy… while still maintaining a cohesive look across the home,” outlines Smith.
If you’re hesitant to commit to graphic prints or bold stripes, he says to try incorporating playful touches through an unexpected splash of colour or abstract artwork.
“Crafting an immersive atmosphere that feels unmistakably fun, without losing the grown-up sophistication.

“By utilising small flourishes of design that embrace the essence of FunHaus, you’ll have an uplifting space that’s stylish and liveable,” suggests Smith.
From soft furnishings to lighting, to tableware, Helen Shaw, director of marketing (International), Benjamin Moore, says another way to embrace this playful trend is by decorating the walls.
“Paint is the perfect vehicle to experiment without it being a forever commitment.
“With just a few tins of paint you can try out the look in different spaces, then build on it with furniture and styling objects once you know it’s for you.”
Alongside classic statement stripes which are synonymous with this look, Shaw says: “Hand-painted details such as a scallop border bring an artisanal charm, as well as creating an engaging dialogue between contrasting tones.”

When implementing this technique, she says to look to your home’s existing architecture for guidance. “Echo and enhance its lines – whether by painting a border that traces the soft curve of an archway; or by playing with materiality and pairing period features with a contemporary cornice in juxtaposed hues.”
Colours that sit opposite one another on the colour wheel form a complementary scheme, she underlines. “A sure-fire way to achieve a vibrant, invigorating look in any space. For a more grown-up take on the look this spring, consider a palette of brown-based pink offset with a fresh pistachio accent,” Shaw says confidently.

In 2026, the rental market across the UK — and especially in the south of England — is settling into a period of moderate change. After several years of sharp rent increases, the pace of growth has slowed and in some places rents are even edging down. But while the crunch of affordability has eased somewhat, pressures remain. Compounding these challenges is a rising incidence of rental scams, which are costing would-be tenants thousands of pounds and eroding confidence in the system.
Recent rental data paints a picture of a market moving away from the frenetic inflation of recent years. Reports from the HomeLet Rental Index show that average
monthly UK rents were £1,302 in January 2026, with many regions, including the South West, now around £1,169 and South East around £1,401. Overall, these figures reflect a market where rent growth is stabilising rather than accelerating.
Meanwhile, analysis from Hamptons suggests that average rents on newly agreed tenancies across Great Britain actually fell slightly over 2025, with London and the South East among the regions recording annual declines. In London, newly agreed rents dropped by 2.7%, and other southern regions saw minimal gains or small falls — evidence that affordability pressures are easing the competition for homes to let.

Rental availability has also improved. Reports show that the number of homes available to rent across England has risen by around 20% over the past year, giving tenants slightly more choice.
Despite this, rents remain high compared with many parts of the UK, and the South continues to lag behind northern regions in terms of rental yield and growth forecasts, with investors increasingly looking to markets outside the South for stronger returns.
Even with cooling rental growth, many renters — particularly those on lower incomes — face affordability challenges. High advertised rents in London and the South East continue to eat into household budgets, and support such as the Local
Housing Allowance (LHA) remains frozen at earlier levels, leaving some tenants without sufficient housing assistance.
Meanwhile, demand remains resilient in many parts of the South, especially for larger homes suitable for families and remote working.
One of the least talked-about — but increasingly serious — risks in the current UK rental market is rental fraud. According to data compiled by UK crime reporting agencies and fraud prevention bodies, rental scams cost tenants millions of pounds in recent years.
These scams typically involve fraudsters advertising properties that either do not exist or that they do not have the right to let. Criminals may copy legitimate rental listings then change the contact details,

encouraging would-be tenants to send deposits before ever seeing the property. Some scams go further, fake tenancy paperwork and even deposit protection certificates are used to create a veneer of legitimacy.
Given the growing risk of fraud, due diligence is essential. Experts advise:
Never pay fees before viewing the property in person or verifying the landlord’s credentials.
• Confirm ownership and right to let via the HM Land Register.
• Deal only through reputable, registered letting agents.
• Report any suspicious listings to Action Fraud and the platform hosting the advert.
The rental market in the south of England in 2026 is at a crossroads. Rent growth is stabilising and legal protections for tenants is strengthening. Yet affordability remains a concern, and new hazards like rental scams mean that renters must be vigilant and well informed.
For tenants, 2026 may bring more choice and security, but only those who stay informed, wary of scams, and proactive in their search will truly benefit from the shifting landscape.
A good letting agent can make the difference between a stress-free rental experience and a costly headache. Professional agents handle marketing, tenant referencing, compliance, deposit protection, safety checks, rent collection, and maintenance—dramatically reducing the risk of fines, disputes, and void periods. In a competitive and regulated market, expert management provides peace of mind and protects long-term returns.

Written by Dr Selina Gray, Women’s Health GP at Dr Helen Medical, Ringwood
I am a GP with a specialist interest in women’s health, and my connection to this work is personal. Growing up with four older sisters gave me early insight into the quiet strength and unspoken challenges of womanhood.
Now, as a GP at Dr Helen Medical in Ringwood, I see those same women every day.
Many belong to the “sandwich generation” - balancing careers, children and ageing parents. They have managed competing demands for years with competence and little complaint. Until something shifts.
When Menopause Symptoms Disrupt Daily Life
It is rarely sudden. More often, it is gradual. Sleep fragments. Anxiety rises. Concentration dips. Energy fades. Periods change. Confidence slips.
Women often say: “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I just can’t cope like I used to.”
For many in perimenopause or menopause, this sense of “losing themselves” is deeply unsettling - especially when they have always been capable.
Menopause, Neurodiversity and ADHD
When coping strategies begin to fail, everything can feel as though it is unravelling. One of the most important things I say is this: it is not a personal failing.
Understanding Hormonal Change
Perimenopause and menopause are significant biological transitions. Declining oestrogen affects the brain, mood, sleep, bones and cardiovascular system.
Yet many women are treated for anxiety or insomnia without considering whether hormones are contributing.
They are rarely the whole story - but often a key piece of the puzzle.
What Is HRT?
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) replaces hormones the body is no longer producing in sufficient amounts. This may include:
• Oestrogen to relieve symptoms
• Progesterone to protect the womb lining
• Testosterone in selected cases
Options include patches, gels, sprays, tablets and hormonal coils. Treatment should always be individualised.
Does HRT Fix Everything?
No - and I am clear about that. Sleep, nutrition, movement and stress management remain foundational. HRT does not remove life pressures but many women report they feel “more like myself” and “things are more manageable”.

When sleep improves and brain fog lifts, women often feel steadier - even while still spinning many plates.
Weighing Benefits and Risks
Like any treatment, HRT has benefits and risks that should be discussed openly.
Potential benefits include improved quality of life, better sleep and mood, reduced hot flushes and protection against osteoporosis. Risks vary depending on age, medical history and the type of HRT used.
As a GP specialising in women’s health, and one of five sisters from a culture where menopause was rarely discussed, I feel strongly about changing the narrative. Women deserve better than silence or dismissal. They deserve time and care.
If the plates are wobbling - or have already fallen - please know this: you are not failing. Your body is changing and the right support exists. Sometimes, simply understanding what is happening is the first step towards feeling steadier again.
For neurodivergent women, particularly those with ADHD, this stage can feel even more destabilising. Hormonal fluctuations may amplify executive dysfunction, emotional overwhelm and anxiety. WEBSITE www.drhelenmedical.co.uk

Lynn Rusk visits Bermuda, the newest destination for wellness-focused travel.
Lying face-down in a floating cabana during an aromatherapy massage in a 500,000-year-old cave is the closest thing to nirvana I’ve ever experienced.
My cabana sits above an azure underground lake, and I’m entirely surrounded by stalactites, hanging like icicles from the roof, and stalagmites (mounds formed on the floor) in Prospero’s Cave, Bermuda.
It’s hard to imagine a more calming setting as I feel my muscles relax, to the soundtrack of the drips of water (or calcium carbonate deposits, more accurately) falling from the ceiling, echoing around this ancient cavern.
This cave and the nearby Cathedral Cave form a pair of expansive ancient underground limestone grottos beneath Grotto Bay Beach Resort & Spa. TRAVEL

LEFT
Natura Spa in Prospero’s Cave beneath Grotto Bay Beach Resort & Spa in Bermuda | Grotto Bay Beach Resort/PA

Guests can also take a dip in the Cathedral Cave’s naturally cool waters – which reaches depths of nine metres – a welcome relief from the balmy outside temperatures. These caves were first discovered during Bermuda’s early colonisation. It’s thought that Sir George Somers, whose ship was wrecked near the country’s shore in 1609, first discovered Prospero’s Cave.
Now, the resort’s Natura Spa, set inside the cave itself with just three overwater cabanas, offers an exclusive setting for a variety of treatments – and it’s said to be one of the few places in the world for such a unique experience. It also marks the beginning of my wellness journey on this beautiful archipelago in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean.
Famous for its pink-sand beaches and turquoise waters, the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, comprising seven main islands within an archipelago of 181 in total, is positioning itself as a leading destination for wellnessfocused travellers.
I’m pleasantly surprised by the mild winter temperatures in January, ranging from 16 to 20 degrees Celsius, a respite from the harsh British winter and some eight hours away by air.
But Bermuda feels worth visiting for the warmth and hospitality of its people alone. Walking around the capital, Hamilton, on Main Island, with pastel-coloured buildings lining the waterfront, splashes of street art, and charming shops and cafés, it’s almost impossible to pass anyone without being greeted with a smile.
I’m staying at the luxurious five-star Rosewood Bermuda on Tucker’s Point in Hamilton Parish, home to Bermuda’s largest private pink-sand beach.
The sand has a subtle pink hue on several beaches here, thanks to the presence of a microscopic marine organism, foraminifera – its bright red or pink shells mix with white sand and tiny coral fragments, giving the distinctive colour.
And a trip to Bermuda wouldn’t be complete without a visit to nearby Horseshoe Bay, the island’s famous crescent-shaped pink-sand beach with dramatic limestone cliffs.
ABOVE
Ocean view suite at the Rosewood Bermuda | Rosewood Bermuda/PA
My spacious room, complete with its own private balcony and a dark-wood, four-poster king bed, has views straight over the North Atlantic Ocean.
This 240-acre resort also features a spa, five scenic swimming pools, and three restaurants with two bars, the perfect setting to relax and unwind.
The island’s food and drink scene celebrates flavours and produce unique to its shores. A driver, Tim, insisted I couldn’t leave without trying a Dark ’n’ Stormy, made with Gosling’s Black Seal rum and ginger beer, and the famous Bermuda fish sandwich: fried white fish served on toasted raisin bread. It’s a challenge I happily accept.
The main objective on this trip, however, was to explore the full range of wellness experiences Bermuda has to offer.
One stop on the wellness tour is a barre class at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club. Also known as the ‘Pink Palace’, the hotel boasts an impressive art collection, including original works by Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst, and prides itself on being Bermuda’s only luxury urban resort.

But no one embodies Bermuda’s wellness ethos quite like Jessica Burns, founder of The Retreat House, described as “a sanctuary for connecting more deeply with yourself, others and the natural world of Bermuda”.
A Bermuda native, Burns established the business after losing her mother, Kim, to ovarian cancer in 2023. Leaving behind her corporate career in London, she returned home to transform the beach-facing property her mother had rented to tourists for more than a decade into The Retreat House.
Since 2024, she’s hosted a range of retreats, from the Kim Burns Retreats for people living with cancer, to programmes designed for expectant mothers. Her aim, she tells me, is to help establish Bermuda as “one of the world’s leading wellness destinations,” encouraging travellers to embrace the island’s healing nature.
With its turquoise waters, lush tropical greenery, and unhurried pace of life, Bermuda naturally fosters relaxation and restoration.
But it’s also rich in natural culinary sources and medicinal plants. I join a foraging tour with local vegan chef Doreen Williams-James on Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve, at the south-eastern tip of the island.
She leads us on a leisurely walk, pointing out edible and medicinal plants along the way, including Old Spice, fennel, wood sorrel, hibiscus, and scurvy grass.
“I grew up eating scurvy grass, a coastal, vitamin C-rich plant, as a child,” Williams-James explains.
“My father would take me out at this time of year to pick it – it only grows once a year. When sailors first arrived on the island, their diet consisted largely of salted pork, which led to vitamin C deficiency and scurvy. They discovered that eating this plant cured the disease, which is why [we know] it’s so high in vitamin C.”
She also touts the health benefits of eating seasonally: “At this time of year, there are so many plants naturally high in vitamin C. Eating what’s in season can help prevent illness and support healing through food.”

Foraging isn’t just a popular activity on the island – it was once a way of life. “For the older generation, foraging was simply how they lived – that’s what they ate and relied on. When I go foraging now, younger people often look at me and think, ‘What is she doing?’ But I’m seeing more of them join my tours because they want to eat better and embrace a different lifestyle.”
From a massage in an ancient cave to foraging in the wild and spending time on unspoilt beaches, I leave Bermuda feeling refreshed and ready to take on the challenges of city life once again.

Every so often, a property agency comes along that makes you actually want to chat about lettings. No, really. Step forward Camerons Lettings — not just your average bunch of estate agents, but proper peoplepeople committed to making the often baffling world of bricks and leases a whole lot less befuddling.

Mayflower Studios, Southampton, 18–19 April
It’s been 45 years since Adam Long and his partners first hit upon the idea of a 20-minute Hamlet to be performed at Shakespearean-themed Renaissance Faires in his native California. Little did Long and his two co-writers, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, realise at the time that they were planting the seed for what would become the Reduced Shakespeare Company. That singularly cheeky - and smart - theatrical venture is resurfacing anew this year in an entirely fresh production that will tour to 30 UK venues, starting in the Cotswolds town of Chipping Norton.

Directed and co-written by Long, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) furthers the theatrical compression that is the stock-in-trade of this RSC (not be confused with that other troupe with the same initials – the

Royal Shakespeare Company). But in the hands of a new trio of performers – Efé Agwele, Woogie Jung, and Tom Pavey –this brainstorming of the Bard is being fashioned anew.
“The overall goal of doing the complete works is still there – 37 plays and 154 sonnets all for the price of one ticket; the audience is going to get their money worth.” So says Long, who some while ago settled in the UK and has an English wife and two grown-up children.

But whereas he performed in the show back in the day, Long is pleased to have a new generation of talent take charge onstage: indeed, he notes with astonishment that more than 2400 people applied to fill these three roles (plus a walking cover). “One of the reasons the show works so well is that it has always emanated from the personalities of the actors onstage. We’re excited about the actors we’ve got, who are incredibly intelligent and incredibly funny.”

It falls to Agwele, an Anglo-Nigerian graduate of Mountview, to perform Hamlet backwards - one of this production’s defining set pieces – but Jung and Pavey are equally important to a show that leaves no Shakespearean stone unturned. There’s a micro-condensed Othello scored to a ukulele, and a carnage-filled Titus Andronicus done as a YouTube cooking tutorial. The history plays become a manic football game with a crown passed

from one king to the next (King Lear is disqualified for being fictional), and spells, shipwrecks, and rings signal the charmed landscape of the comedies.
“I didn’t want this to be an exercise in nostalgia,” notes Long, a onetime political activist who seems astonished even now at the RSC’s nine year, 3744-performance West End run, which finished in 2005. (Their work has also been seen in over 20 countries.) The good thing is that his show comes steeped in a love for the theatre that knows no limits. “I just love the whole artistry of theatre – the ritual of it, the celebration of it.” Conjoin that passion with one for Shakespeare and you’ve moved towards the timeless. “People just love Shakespeare’s stories,” says Long, “and they always will.”
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by the Reduced Shakespeare Company comes to Mayflower Studios from 15–18 April. Tickets are on sale now.

The chef, cookery writer and teacher chats to Lauren Taylor about the importance of rice – and having “withdrawal symptoms” when she can’t find it.
It’s been a decade since MasterChef 2014 winner Ping Coombes published her debut cookbook – and now she’s back with her long-awaited second.
As the first Malaysian-born winner of the prestigious cooking BBC One show title, her plan was to introduce Malaysian food to home cooks, a cuisine which, at the time, was much lesser known.
She had only entered the competition because she was made redundant and “had nothing else to do”. These days, the mum-of-two runs Ping’s Masak Club cookery school and Ping’s Makan Club, a supper club, and collaborates with chefs in restaurants around the country, but aside from improved recipe writing skills, she says she’s the same cook we watched on TV some 12 years ago.
“I always cook the same way as I did 10 years before, I only have one very simple rule – I only cook what I love to eat,” says the 44-year-old.
This time it’s rice – with her latest book simply titled, Rice – something that might sound simple but really is an art form, as well as being an integral part to many cultural traditions.
“In the West, rice is an afterthought. Cook something, and you would say, ‘Should I have pasta or potatoes, or rice, microwavable rice and just bang it on,” says Coombes. “Whereas in the East, we do it every day.

“I also have rice withdrawal symptoms,” she laughs, if she doesn’t eat enough, or if she’s on holiday. “Don’t get me wrong, I love other food other than rice. But we went to Spain for 10 days and five days in, I started to feel like I can’t deal with another jamon, or another plate of patatas bravas. So in Seville, I had to run into a Chinese restaurant to order rice. And it was the best bowl of fried rice and prawns I remember that I ever, ever tasted.”
Growing up in Ipoh, Malaysia, she remembers being four or five and her grandmother chasing her and her brother around the house trying to feed them
before school, while her mum and dad were at work. “We would have rice for at least two meals a day.”
“She’s running around scooping this communal bowl of rice with meat and veggies or whatever, because it’s easier to just have one bowl of rice and feed both of us.”
She grew up with an understanding of how important rice is.
“Rice is precious and growing up I’d see paddy fields and how people grow rice – it’s back-breaking work.
“A few years ago, I showed my children the work that goes into implanting it and harvesting it. Of course, there are machines now, but there are still many parts in Malaysia up in the mountains where the machines can’t go, and are still being planted by hand.
“And you think that so fleetingly you would throw away a bowl – it takes so much work to have that bowl of rice.
“I see rice as holding everything together, you think that your main dishes is important, of course, if you’re cooking an amazing stir of rice with some expensive beef, and you you cook the most incredible the dish ever, if your rice is undercooked and all mushy, you will ruin your entire meal.”
So how do we do justice to this simple grain, the backbone of so many Asian cuisines?

Let it rest
Master the absorption method
Coombes’ latest book is full of helpful tips and tricks but she always starts by washing the rice.
“I’ve always cooked rice on the hop with the absorption method. And my go-to rice is jasmine rice, because I grew up with it,” she notes.
“As a rule, it’s one to one-and-a-half. Or, if you’re putting in a microwave, one to one, so 300 grams of water, 300 grams of rice. Putting too much water in [or] not putting enough water in” is a common mistake home cooks make.
“Some grains require a little bit more water, but by and large, it should be fine. The hardest rice to cook is brown. They have more fibre so it requires a lot more water and patience.”
Never drain it
“For me, it’s a definite no no,” says Coombes. “Because you [drain] all the nutrients away. The rice, when it cooks, the starch releases. If you cook it with a lot of water and then drain it, you’re wasting all that goodness in your rice. So the absorption method is much better, that you contain all of that in your rice.”
You might be used to letting a steak rest, but if you’re eating your rice straight away you’re missing a trick. A major mistake is “not letting it rest or steam”, says Coombes, “usually for about 20 to 30 minutes.”
Letting the rice sit after cooking will help it soften, she says. “Also digestion-wise, it’s better to eat slightly warm rice than hot rice. You taste everything more when the rice is warm and it’s just the right temperature. I will never serve rice super hot straight out of the rice cooker or pan. I always recommend to do your rice first before you start anything else, then let your rice steam while you chop.”
Freeze extra
“I highly recommend making more rice than you think you need, and then chill it and freeze it. I have a rice drawer. Every time I make a certain type of rice, I make five times the amount.”
It’s a good way to replace those instant packets of rice, with a perfectly home-cooked version you already made. “I freeze it in 150gram portions, I wrap it in cling film and then I put each individual packet inside a larger bag. And I name it, like ‘sushi rice’, or whatever.
“All I have to do when I need rice is bring out the bag, open it, sprinkle some water and [put it] in the microwave for three minutes and you’ll have instant rice.”
Learn how to store safely
“There’s a bacteria that forms with rice, it’s a high-risk food,” notes Coombes, but one of ways to mitigate any risk associated with reheating rice, is to “chill down your rice” before popping in the fridge.
“I make my rice, I eat my dinner and by the time I’ve finished my dinner, that rice will be cool enough to pack away straight into the fridge. Of course, if you leave it out the whole day in room temperature, or if I forget and leave it in a rice cooker, and the next morning I come down and [wondered] ‘Should I use this?’ The answer is no.”
Read the packet
Like anything else, rice varies in quality. “So for jasmine rice, ‘triple A’ is your best one – [the grains] are longer, they are plumber.
“But the most expensive ones aren’t always the best. It’s a little bit of, you never know until you try it, but I always look for triple A jasmine rice from Thailand – it’s really good – and basmati from Pakistan or from India. The longer the basmati grain, the higher the quality, she notes. “They’re the luxurious ones.”

INGREDIENTS
5 skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs
1tsp vegetable oil
2tbsp butter
2 garlic cloves, crushed
300g jasmine or basmati rice
1tbsp chicken stockpowder
380ml water
160g canned sweetcorn
340g canned green lentils
20g chives, chopped, to garnish
For the marinade:
3tbsp pineapple juice
1tbsp honey
1tbsp light soy sauce
1½tsp dark soy sauce
½tsp sesame oil
½tsp five spice powder
½tsp ground ginger
¼tsp salt
1. Score the top of the chicken thighs a couple of times so that the marinade penetrates deeper into the chicken and place in a bowl. Add all the marinade ingredients and marinate for at least 30 minutes at room temperature or in the refrigerator overnight.
2. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan or Gas 6.
3. In a large ovenproof pan, heat the oil over a medium heat. Add the chicken thighs to the pan, skin-side down, and fry for five minutes to brown the skin. Flip the chicken over and pour over the marinade in the bowl.
4. Cook for two to three minutes to reduce the marinade a little, then remove the chicken to a plate.
5. Add the butter, garlic and rice to the pan and give it a good stir, then add the chicken stock powder, water, sweetcorn and lentils. Stir again to distribute the ingredients evenly in one layer. Nestle the chicken thighs into the rice mixture, cover with a lid and bake in the oven for 35 minutes.
6. Remove from the oven and let it stand for five minutes before serving.
7. Sprinkle some chives on top, fluff up the rice and serve.

It's Saturday mid-morning across Bournemouth, Poole and C hristchurch - a natural moment when the weekend settles into its stride The early rush has passed, the day’s plans are taking shape, and from 10am to 12 noon C hris Morley provides the per fect soundtrack on Hot Radio His show sits right in that sweet spot after the first coffee and just as the day begins to open up
C hris first joined Hot Radio back in 2017 and he still remembers the day vividly Mainly because it was April Fools’ Day, which somehow feels completely appropriate Since then, he’s become a familiar voice on Saturday mornings, building a genuine connection with listeners week after week For C hris, radio really is the best job ever: a chance to hang out with great people, play brilliant music, and hear all the wonder fully random stories about what listeners get up to over the weekend some of which he admits he’s still trying to recover from hearing about
That easy going warmth is a big par t of his appeal He has a calm, natural confidence behind the microphone, the kind that makes the show feel welcoming and unforced Whether you are heading out to the shops, meeting friends, or simply enjoying a slower star t to the day, he keeps you company with a friendly tone and a steady flow of great tunes It’s radio that feels like par t of the weekend routine
His late-morning slot is built around enjoyment The show blends upbeat favourites, familiar classics and plent y of singalong tracks, creating a soundtrack that fits per fectly with Saturday life There’s room for light chat, local mentions and the kind of laid-back conversation that makes you feel connected, even if you’re only listening for a few minutes at a time One of the regular highlights is his feature “What Day Is It?” at 11 30am, where C hris dips into a vir tual calendar of unusual and often hilarious events people might not even know exist from eating ice cream for breakfast to celebrating International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day It’s a simple, feel-good moment that adds a bit of fun and unpredictabilit y to the show each week

Music has always been at the hear t of C hris’s world His first album was Five’s Invincible boyband nostalgia at its peak and his favourite ar tist of all time is Take That, a choice he says needs no explanation The best gig he’s ever been to? Oasis, which he describes as absolute chaos in the best possible way. And if there’s one track he can’t resist singing along to, it’s Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby,” a song that’s become something of a running joke in his world and, as he’ll happily tell you, practically par t of his career story
Away from the studio, C hris is rarely far from a microphone When he’s not on air, you’ll often find him on stage somewhere across the country hosting ravy bingo, DJ’ing, or bringing a bit of joy ful chaos to a crowd If there’s music playing, people gathered, and a chance to make people smile, C hris is usually right in the middle of it
C loser to home, his favourite spot in the BCP area is Bournemouth Pavilion From comedy nights to musicals and the C hristmas panto, it’s somewhere he loves to unwind and soak up the atmosphere
A place that captures the energy and character of the local enter tainment scene

Flick through any glossy interiors magazine and it’s easy to get carried away with what’s trending; especially with a string of decorative ideas to spur your creativity. But it can be a bit of a reality check, and you end up asking yourself: How can I express myself so it’s about me… as much as it is the decor?

Given all this – and depending on your design ethos –Lara Clarke of Lara Clarke Interiors says it’s about taking a personal approach with clients: “It’s a collaborative process – instead of putting our style on you, we pull your style out.We work with you to try and create something that’s essentially yours and unique, and not a carbon copy of everything else.”
From how you live, to a fabric you love, to where you’re going to be sitting with a cup of tea in the morning, the Surrey-based designer says those sorts of things are really important.
“We get into the nitty gritty detail… how this home is going to work for you as a family, and how it’s going to work best for you – and not for anyone else.”

An advocate of how simple styling tricks make a room feel more expressive, Clarke shares her top tips to inspire creatives and interior enthusiasts…
One of the key things is lighting. “A lot of people might just have downlights; but if you layer your lighting, it makes a huge difference.”
Clarke suggests using a rechargeable wall lighting –flexible and cordless, simply mount a bracket or use strong adhesive – think brass sconce and decorative shade. “You just put it on your wall, and instantly you’ll have some wall lights… it’s a great way to layer lighting in your home. Table lamps are another one,” suggests Clarke. “On a table, go for a different lampshade.”
Glass table lamps with shades in zig-zag ikat pattern in eau-de-nil, perfectly complement the wall lights with pleated crimson shades, lending visual interest | Jonathan Bond/Lara Clarke/PA
So if you buy a table lamp from John Lewis for example, she suggests choosing your own designer lampshade. “It elevates that lamp in a way an ordinary, plain white shade wouldn’t.”
She also prefers to add colour. If you’re not painting the walls and want to refresh your space by influencing the mood, Clarke says it’s another tool to add colour and pattern. “I like using coloured lampshades in my designs, I kind of link with the scheme… a plain white one can be boring; but a patterned lampshade makes a big difference.”
SHELVING & PLACEMENT
To style your shelves and place accessories just so, the designer says it’s good to have a mixture of taller things, think photos, books, and suggests including some flowers within the scheme.

“Sometimes people tend to stuff it full when actually less is more.”
And if you’re torn between symmetry and scale, it’s an equilibrium. “So if you’re looking at a shelf or bookcase as a hole, there will be some elements of symmetry.
“But you don’t want everything to be symmetrical, because then it will feel too staged, there needs to be a balance between both.”
Clarke likes to do a mixture. “I put a lot of books flat, and then it’s nice to have something on top of them.
“If you have some books you want to balance, and they’re stacked on top of one another, then balance that with an object, vase or candle on top.”
THE SECRET TO SCATTER CUSHIONS
“I think cushions is one of those massive areas where it can completely change the look of your room,” highlights Clarke.
“The key is to get a quality cushion with a good plump; you can buy cushions from the high street, but they won’t have a nice feather insert.”

Therefore, if you’re buying a cushion cover, she says to buy a feather insert one size bigger. “So you stuff it, and then your cushion looks fuller than if you were to buy the corresponding insert which normally looks a bit flat.
“It makes the cushion look more expensive, I like a very plump cushion, it’s more luxurious rather than something limp on the sofa,” she quips.
Moreover, Clarke says you can never have too many cushions. “It’s a really good way to add colour and interest to potentially a plain sofa.”

When it comes to do’s and don’ts, the designer says a lot of people always buy a rug too small for the space. “And actually, it makes the space look a bit smaller if anything.
“So you want to oversize your rug… you don’t want it to look like a doormat under your coffee table.”
Ideally, she says to have most of the furniture sitting on it. “So that would be your sofa, your side tables, your accent chairs, if possible – but if in doubt, bigger is better.”
“You want to zone the space by including the furniture within that,” she says confidently.

The rental landscape is changing — and for landlords, preparation is everything. With the proposed Renters’ Rights Bill set to bring significant reforms to the private rented sector, now is the time to understand what these changes could mean for you and your property portfolio.
The Bill is expected to introduce sweeping updates, including the abolition of Section 21 “no fault” evictions, changes to tenancy structures, and strengthened tenant protections. While the intention is to create a fairer system, many landlords are understandably asking: how will this affect possession rights, rent reviews, compliance obligations, and overall risk?
For some, the reforms may feel daunting. However, with the right guidance, they can also present an opportunity to strengthen processes, improve tenancy management, and ensure long-term stability.
Sotiria Laitmer, our in-house lettings expert, is already supporting landlords through this evolving legislation. With extensive experience in property compliance and tenancy law, Sotiria is helping clients review their current agreements, assess

risk exposure, and prepare for the transition away from fixed-term assured shorthold tenancies.
One of the key anticipated changes is the move towards periodic tenancies as standard, alongside revised grounds for possession. Landlords will need to understand the new legal routes available when seeking possession, particularly in cases of rent arrears, property sale, or landlord occupation. Documentation, timelines, and evidence requirements are all expected to become even more critical.
In addition, proposals around rent increases, property standards, and dispute resolution processes may require landlords to adopt more robust record-keeping and proactive property management strategies.
The message is clear: waiting until the legislation is enacted could leave you exposed. Early preparation allows time to review tenancy agreements, update compliance procedures, and put contingency plans in place.
At Burns Lettings, we believe informed landlords are empowered landlords. Whether you own a single investment property or a growing portfolio, understanding how the Renters’ Rights Bill will impact you is essential.
If you have questions about how the proposed changes could affect your property, or you would like a tailored review of your current arrangements, speak to Sotiria Laitmer today. Expert advice now could save considerable time, stress, and cost in the months ahead.
Are you ready for the changes? Let’s make sure you are.

At Burns Hamilton, we’ve been specialising in residential lettings and property management across Bournemouth, Poole and the surrounding areas for over 55 years. As ARLA-licensed letting agents, we pride ourselves on delivering a professional, reliable and personal service to both landlords and tenants.
Whether you’re looking to let your property, searching for your next rental home, or need expert guidance throughout the tenancy process, we’re here to make the experience straightforward, efficient and stress-free.
Emily Gray of Burns Hamilton explains what sets a good managing agent apart.
“What defines a ‘good’ managing agent, and what should customers prioritise when appointing one?”
Service charges and maintenance costs are under constant scrutiny, and so it is understandable that many homeowners and landlords look first at price when choosing a managing agent. While cost is certainly a consideration, I believe that it should never be the deciding factor. A well-chosen agent doesn’t just maintain a property; they protect its long-term value, ensure legal compliance, and create a safe, well-run environment for everyone living or investing there.
A genuinely good managing agent stands out in four key areas, all far more influential on long-term outcomes than headline cost.
The first is the knowledge, qualifications and experience of the team. Property management is a specialist discipline, touching everything from building safety and contractor oversight to finance, risk management, and customer care. An agent with a well-trained, properly qualified team can navigate these complexities confidently and proactively.
Next, look for membership of respected professional bodies such as The Property Institute (TPI) or Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). These organisations

impose rigorous standards, require ongoing professional development, and ensure that agents stay up to date with ever-changing legislation. Membership is a strong indicator of integrity, competence and accountability.
The third hallmark of a high-quality agent is genuine expert knowledge. This goes beyond qualifications; it’s about demonstrated understanding of legal requirements, evolving safety standards, environmental considerations, and best practice in day-to-day management.

A knowledgeable agent anticipates issues before they escalate and provides solutions that balance compliance, practicality and cost efficiency.
Finally, a strong agent has a proven track record for reliability and compliance. Transparent financial management, clear communication, accurate reporting and consistent follow through are nonnegotiables. Buildings are safer, residents feel informed, and budgets are managed responsibly.
While cost can be a helpful comparison point, it rarely reflects value. A low cost service that misses compliance requirements or neglects maintenance can result in far higher bills later. The smartest choice is an agent who excels in those four pillars: expertise, qualifications, professional standards and proven reliability, and who, in turn, offers long-term reassurance and real value for money.
If you’re seeking a managing agent built on expertise, accountability and long-term relationships, Burns Hamilton offers over 55 years of local experience. Walkers will then head back to the mainland to hike Connemara’s Western Way and embark on an old pilgrim trail through the Maumturk Mountain, before visiting Leenane, a village on Ireland’s only fjord.

In a world where space is at a premium and interiors increasingly reflect our personalities, Custom Creations has quietly become the go-to partner for homeowners who want storage solutions that are as beautiful as they are practical. Whether you’re grappling with the awkward angles of a loft room or dreaming of a wardrobe that looks like it belongs in a design magazine, this Dorset-based family business has the craftsmanship and creativity to make your vision a reality.

At its heart, Custom Creations specialises in bespoke fitted furniture and storage solutions — from built-in wardrobes and under-stairs cupboards to custom media walls and home office installations. Every piece is designed in-house, crafted in their workshop and fitted by expert joiners, meaning each project is truly one-of-a-kind to suit you and your space. With over 40
years of combined experience, the team’s friendly, design-focused approach ensures that clients aren’t left with cookie-cutter results but with furniture that feels made for them.
The benefits of bespoke fitted furniture extend far beyond mere aesthetics. In today’s homes — where open-plan living and multi-use spaces are the norm — clutter can quickly sneak in and overwhelm even the most well-intentioned living area. Clever, made-to-measure storage can reclaim every nook and cranny, turning wasted space under stairs, around chimney breasts, or across awkward ceilings into practical areas for stashing clothes, tech cables, books and more. A bespoke solution doesn’t just store your belongings; it organises them logically, making your daily routines smoother and your rooms feel calmer and more purposeful.

And let’s talk style. 2026’s interior trends are all about spaces that feel personal and grounded — warm, tactile materials, sculptural lighting and layered, expressive interiors that move away from generic, stark showhome looks. Custom Creations’ palette of finishes — from natural oak and textured neutrals to high gloss and

bold colour options — means your fitted furniture can complement or elevate whatever aesthetic you’re loving right now. Want minimalist elegance? Rich heritage tones? A chic, cosy reading nook worthy of a lifestyle edit? Bespoke pieces allow you to dial in the details you care about most.
There’s also something deeply satisfying about owning furniture that’s built to last — not a transient, flat-pack impulse buy, but
heirloom-quality craftsmanship with a 25year guarantee. That longevity aligns perfectly with the growing desire for sustainability and quality over throwaway trends.
Most importantly, partnering with Custom Creations means enjoying the process. From the first measure and design chat in your home, through to installation, the team treats your space with respect and care — even vacuuming down after a day’s work — so that end result feels as good on the day it’s fitted as it will ten years down the line.
If you’re ready to transform your home with stylish, smart storage that truly works for you, a bespoke solution might just be the best investment you make this year — practical, desirable and undeniably bespoke in every sense.
Ultimately, investing in bespoke fitted furniture is about future-proofing your home. As lifestyles evolve and rooms are asked to work harder than ever, flexible, intelligent storage becomes less of a luxury and more of a necessity. Thoughtfully designed cabinetry can adapt as your needs change, adding long-term value while maintaining a timeless look that won’t date with passing trends. With Custom Creations, storage isn’t hidden away or treated as an afterthought — it becomes an integral part of the design story. Stylish, practical and meticulously crafted, it’s proof that when form and function work together, great interiors truly come to life.

If you find yourself making a conscious effort to switch off, factoring in more me-time, and championing a reading hour (or two), then a cosy reading nook and wellbeing sanctuary awaits.
Especially with the trend of digital detoxing, screen-free zones and book shelves are a brilliant way to make a design statement… you don’t need to live a literary life to create a story-filled space.
And with World Book Day (March 5) highlighting how reading matter can spark your creativity, journaling and managing stress, a quiet, comfortable place is the bedrock for bookish endeavours.
As Rachal Hutcheson, interiors expert at Sharps fitted furniture company, puts it: “A Pinterest 2025 report revealed a 265% increase in searches for book club retreats – signalling a growing appetite for wholesome activities.”
As we look ahead in 2026, she says this once-aspirational trend is translating into how we’re shaping our interiors –with a focus on analogue living.
“We’re seeing an increase in demand for designing dedicated book nooks [the art of styling and displaying books] within homes.”

“Whether carved out as a bespoke cubby under the stairs, a curated landing space, or designated corner within a main living area, these reading zones are designed for switching off… and getting lost in a book.”
Moreover, she says we’re investing in this hobby not just as a lifestyle choice; but as a way to support mental wellbeing by creating spaces that nurture creativity and calm.
“Bespoke design solutions allow book nooks to be seamlessly integrated without compromising on functionality; incorporating built-in seating and storage, alongside open shelving to showcase books, plants and expressive decor,” outlines Hutcheson.
Depending on your budget and book collection, if you’re in the market for a freestanding unit and wondering how best to read the room, Julia Bilotta, creative stylist at Sofology, says: “Display them nestled alongside ceramics, handcrafted treasures and collected keepsakes.”
“Creating layers of texture, and stories that define the character of a space – books remain timeless companions, offering the perfect way to unwind.”
Curated with care, Bilotta says they form the quiet backbone of a home, “inviting a slower, more analogue way of living.”

She continues: “Anchoring the room with this architectural centrepiece draws the eye, creating a perfect backdrop for upholstery and furnishings. Let the colours on display flow naturally throughout the room in a concise palette to create a sanctuary for the senses, away from the hum of screens.”
Rohan Blacker, founder of Schplendid Sofas says: “The increasing demand for offline activities like knitting, boardgames and, of course, reading reflects a shift in people’s needs – and a move away from digital fatigue.
“Books offer a healthy dose of escapism, and carving out a corner of your home dedicated to curling up with your favourite novel is the perfect way to honour the digital detox you keep promising yourself.”
For more styling inspiration, Blacker says to maximise your storage by creating floor to ceiling shelving: “You’ve heard of colour drenching, so think about setting up your library as ‘book drenching’, if you will.
“Literary purists can of course alphabetise their collection, but for minds that work better with visual cues think about bookscaping it – and creating graduated colour patterns with those beautiful decorative spines.”

Blacker continues: “Think of your collection as a living wall from which you can mirror the shades of your favourite novels, to create a cohesive look and feel.”
He suggests adding in the most generous, tactile armchair or loveseat you can find in a sympathetic hue to frame the vignette.

“Choose fabrics that whisper ‘I’m never getting up’, like supple velvet in your absolute favourite shade – and get ready to spend every evening of the week reading the night away,” adds Blacker.
As bookworms will appreciate, fundamental to reading time is good lighting – not only to set the mood, but to prevent eye strain and improve wellbeing.
“Setting the mood with lighting is most crucial in these digital detox nooks,” highlights Mara Rypacek Miller, founder of Industville.
Della Black & White Decorative Brush Stroke Effect Book Boxes - Set of 2, £29, Rowen Homes | Rowen Homes/PA
“Exposure to high-intensity, cool-temperature lighting is closely associated with alertness and screen use; while warmer, lower-level light helps regulate circadian rhythms and encourages relaxation.”
In reading nooks, she says light sources should have a temperature that sits between 2700K and 3000K; otherwise known as warm white or soft white. “A range proven to feel calm without compromising visual clarity for reading.”
For instantly instilling a sense of zen, she says natural materials take centre stage with warm timber, textured stone, and organic linens coming together “to create an environment that feels both honest and grounding.”
“Soft linen drum shades on lighting fixtures further enhance this sense of calm; gently diffusing light and bringing a serene, Japandi-inspired softness to the space.”
Forms should be sleek and uncluttered to reduce cognitive load, advises Miller, and layering light is an integral step in the design process too.

“Table lamps are core to creating these cosy pockets –casting light at the perfect height on side tables or shelves to softly illuminate the pages of your favourite novel.”

“Thoughtfully placed accent lighting in the form of wall lights, adds depth and rounded illumination while also highlighting artwork or textural details of the space,” suggests Miller.
Furthermore, she says wall lights positioned at approximately 1.4 to 1.6 metres from floor level provide balanced, indirect illumination that enhances comfort; encouraging longer, uninterrupted reading sessions.
“With World Book Day approaching, it’s the perfect time to celebrate reading as a mindful habit – and create a space at home that protects attention, rather than competes for it,” underlines Miller.

Thoughtful landscaping that transforms gardens into places to live, gather and unwind
March is the month of possibility. The days stretch a little longer, the soil begins to warm, and gardens across the country stir back into life. It’s the season of fresh starts — and there is no better time to reimagine your outdoor space.
For homeowners considering a garden transformation, spring provides the perfect launch point. And this is where The Landscape Service comes into its own.

Specialising in professional landscaping and garden design, The Landscape Service works with clients to create outdoor spaces that are not only beautiful, but purposeful.
Whether it’s a complete garden redesign, new patios and pathways, structural planting, or carefully planned outdoor living areas, their approach combines practical expertise with creative vision.
A well-designed garden is more than just attractive planting. It’s about structure, flow and usability. It’s about understanding

how the space will be used — from family gatherings to quiet morning coffees — and shaping it accordingly. The Landscape Service takes the time to listen, ensuring each project reflects the homeowner’s lifestyle as well as the character of the property itself.
Spring is also a strategic time for landscaping projects. Ground conditions are improving, plants are entering their growing season, and newly completed work has the months ahead to establish

and flourish. By acting now, homeowners can enjoy the full impact of their investment throughout summer and beyond.
Importantly, professional landscaping adds more than visual appeal. Thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces can enhance property value, improve drainage, create privacy and reduce long-term upkeep through smart material choices and planting schemes suited to the local environment.
Choosing The Landscape Service means placing your garden in experienced hands. Their attention to detail, commitment to quality materials and understanding of horticulture ensure results that stand the test of time.
As spring unfolds, there’s a sense of renewal in the air. If your garden no longer reflects how you want to live, now is the moment to change it — and to create an outdoor space that truly works for you.

Solar energy has become one of the great success stories of British homeownership. Across the country, rooftops are quietly generating clean electricity, lowering household bills and reducing reliance on unpredictable energy markets. For many families, installing solar panels felt like a decisive step towards a more secure, sustainable future.
But there is an important truth that deserves equal attention: a solar installation is not simply a row of panels. It is a working electrical system — a small power station — operating above your home every single day of the year. And like any power station, it requires oversight.
Over recent years, solar installations have increased at pace across the United Kingdom. However, inspection and
maintenance have not always kept up. Industry reporting has shown a rise in incidents linked to faulty solar systems, with fire services now attending call-outs involving solar installations on a regular basis. The causes are rarely dramatic; they are usually gradual; degraded connectors, poor original workmanship, UV-damaged cabling, water ingress that slowly compromises electrical components.
The difficulty is that these problems are almost always invisible from the ground. The system continues to generate electricity. The inverter light remains green. Energy bills appear lower. From the homeowner’s perspective, everything seems fine — until it isn’t.
This is precisely where Tincleton Solar Systems provides essential reassurance.

Tincleton specialises in comprehensive Solar System Inspection & Investigation Services designed to give homeowners clarity about the condition, safety and performance of their installation. Their surveys go far beyond a cursory visual check. Each inspection includes assessment of roof integrity, mounting systems, wiring, inverters and overall electrical safety. The result is a detailed engineering report outlining findings, highlighting risks and offering practical recommendations.
It is not about alarmism. It is about transparency.
A poorly installed or ageing solar system does not automatically mean disaster. In many cases, issues can be identified early and rectified before they escalate. Loose
fixings can be secured. Wiring faults can be corrected. Minor performance losses can be restored. Preventative attention is significantly less costly than reactive repair.
There is also the question of insurance — an area many homeowners understandably assume is straightforward. Increasingly, insurers are asking detailed questions about solar installations. If a system was installed without proper certification, modified without documentation, or left unchecked for years, complications can arise when making a claim. A professional inspection provides documented evidence that the system has been independently assessed, helping to safeguard both property and policy.

Performance matters too. A solar array that is underperforming may still produce electricity, but not at the level originally intended. Over time, small inefficiencies can erode financial returns. By identifying shading issues, connection faults or component degradation, a survey can help restore output and extend the lifespan of the equipment.

Perhaps most importantly, inspection provides peace of mind.
Many homeowners inherit solar panels when purchasing a property. Others installed systems several years ago under different regulatory standards. Some simply have not revisited their installation since the day it was commissioned. In all of these situations, a professional survey answers the questions that genuinely matter: Is it safe? Is it compliant? Is it performing as it should?
Tincleton Solar Systems approaches solar energy with the belief that renewable technology should empower, not worry, homeowners. Their surveys start from £199 — a modest investment compared with the potential cost of unresolved faults or invalidated insurance.
Solar power remains one of the most positive investments a household can make. It lowers bills, reduces environmental impact and increases energy independence. But like any valuable asset, it deserves proper stewardship.
An inspection is not an admission of doubt. It is a demonstration of care.
In an era of unpredictable weather, rising energy demands and growing reliance on home-generated power, ensuring your solar system is safe, efficient and compliant is simply prudent ownership. With the right oversight, solar panels remain exactly what they were intended to be: a smart, forwardthinking addition to your home.
Tincleton Solar Systems exists to make sure they stay that way.

Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.
If you have noticed an increasing number of BYD cars it’s not surprising, given the rapid increase in sales across Europe. Build Your Dreams might sound, and many would argue it is, a bit of a daft name, but the cars are rather impressive. Like most things nowadays they’re made in China, although this year production commences in Hungary.

BYD offer full electric and hybrid models with small city cars, full-size cars, SUVs and a proper estate car. The latest is the SEALION (yes really!) 5 DM-i, an SUV that offers a plug-in hybrid combination with a 1.5-litre petrol engine assisting the car’s electric motor when required. It provides a more EV driving experience yet with the versatility of a petrol-car.
Having sampled several BYD models the one impressive thing that has been uniform across all has been the excellent build quality. Given the pricing it feels a

much more a premium car than many of its similarly, and in some cases higher, priced European competitors.
Two versions are on offer – Comfort at £29,995 and Design at £32,995 – with standard equipment on both including power folding and heated door mirrors, auto wipers and lights, power front seats, rear parking sensors and camera along with navigation and wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The Design model adds a power tailgate, heated front seats, wireless phone charging plus a 360-degree camera and front parking sensors.
On the road it’s a smooth and refined drive with only the occasional aural interruption

from the engine when accelerating hard. The interior offers a very generous amount of legroom and there are plenty of nooks and crannies for in-car collectibles. The interior has a nice flat floor too, particular useful if you drop the rear seats.
The driver’s instrument panel is a little on the small given the amount of information displayed, and as with the main central screen, which is a more useable size, the pallid background colour doesn’t help clarity.
You can silence the driver annoyance (assistance) systems in all modern cars, but to be fair those on the BYD aren’t too intrusive with one exception. Divert your gaze, even slightly, for a nanosecond, and the car will tell you off.
This is an impressive car, it doesn’t have character, but then what modern cars, let alone EVs do? Not many! The aim of the BYD is to provide comfortable, affordable, practical, well-equipped and, depending on your likes, stylish transport. It does all of these things superbly well.

Dacia has revealed pricing for the updated 2026 Sandero that will start from £14,765, while the Sandero Stepway will be available from £16,065.
The upgraded line-up sees both models gain a refreshed exterior look with Dacia’s new inverted-‘T’ LED light signature and redesigned front and rear bumpers, giving a more modern and robust appearance. The Stepway further strengthens its adventurous look with additional body protection. Sandero also introduces a more responsive TCe 100 engine. Offered in three trim levels – Essential, Expression, and Journey – while the Stepway line-up adds a further trim level, the Extreme.

Priced from £14,765 on-the-road, the Sandero Essential features an impressive list of standard equipment, including cruise control with speed limiter, electric front windows, air conditioning and Dacia’s Media Control system, which uses a smartphone and the dedicated Dacia app. Essential also includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition with Intelligent Speed Assist, Driver Attention Warning and more.

Stepping up to the Expression trim, available from £15,765 on-the-road, brings a significant uplift in comfort and technology. Highlights include Dacia’s distinctive 16inch Flex wheels, front fog lights, automatic wipers, electric rear windows, and heated, electrically adjustable door mirrors. Inside, the cabin benefits from enhanced materials and finishes, while infotainment is upgraded to the 10-inch Media Display touchscreen
system with wired Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. Rear parking sensors and a reversing camera also come as standard.
Sitting at the top of the Sandero line-up, the Journey trim delivers a more premium and feature-rich experience, priced from £17,065 on-the-road. It adds 16-inch alloy wheels, an electronic parking brake, high central armrest with storage, automatic air conditioning, and advanced driver assistance features such as Blind Spot Warning and Extended Grip. Journey also gains a Multiview camera system for improved manoeuvring, while infotainment is upgraded to Dacia’s most sophisticated setup: the 10-inch Media Nav Live system, offering built-in navigation, wireless smartphone replication and wireless smartphone charging.
All Sandero Stepway models gain 40cm/16inch wheels, protective body cladding, and roof bars as standard, while the Sandero Stepway Extreme adds a distinctive Copper Brown exterior treatment, upgraded MicroCloud/Copper Brown interior trim, and exclusive black alloy wheels. Comfort and convenience are boosted with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry, and an electronic parking brake with armrest and additional storage. The Extreme also enhances visibility and driver assistance with a Multiview camera system, Blind Spot Warning and Extended Grip, while upgrading infotainment to the Media Nav Live system with built-in navigation and wireless smartphone connectivity and charging.

Amongst luxury, four-wheel-drive vehicles Range Rover has always possessed a particular hold over buyers thanks to a combination of all-terrain ability and sheer luxury. Over the last few years this has been somewhat dented, to put it mildly, by reliability issues
Although the Range Rover was initially a utilitarian workhorse it long ago evolved into the height of luxury and sophistication with prices now starting from £105,000 for the full-size model. In answer to my title question there are a couple of ways to have affordable Range Rover luxury. One is to possess very deep pockets, the other is to look at classic models. You still need a continency fund in terms of running a classic Range Rover, but there’s a certain cachet nowadays to running a modern classic.
The third generation L322 – manufactured from 2001 to 2012 – has garnered much attention of late thanks to its more original looks, build quality and lack of too much technical wizardary to go wrong. Some well-known owners - Jeremy Clarkson and former EVO magazine owner, and highly rated YouTuber, Harry Metcalfe - have
certainly sparked wider interest. One of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s L322 sold at auction last year for £160,000.
Over its lifespan the L322 came with a BMW 3.0 V6 diesel, a 3.6 V8 diesel and finally a 4.4 V8 diesel. Petrol power plants are a 4.4 V8, then a Jaguar derived 4.2 V8 Supercharged and finally a 5.0 V8 Supercharged. The well regarded FullFat4x4 YouTube channel, that I highly recommend for its variety of walk round videos, no nonsence practical demonstrations and model advice, favours the 4.4 TD V8 power plant that covers most usage scenarios, although the 3.6 TD V8 gains favourable comment too.
All have their many positives, and negatives, but the diesels are the most popular given their economy. They arguably have more

potential issues than their petrol engine mates, but the financial effects of the fuel consumption on petrol models verges from catastrophic to bankruptcy.
Bodywork is generally reasonable but the rear door arches are a well-known corrosion point, as is the tailgate and subframes. Mechanical maladies can be varied so a very healthy contingency is recommended.
You can find L322s from as little as £2,500 but buy the very best you can afford. I would say £12-15,000 buys an example to be proud of and its charms will gradually hook you in to long term ownership. The more original your L322 the classier it will look and the more admiring glances it will attract.
There is something particularly special about a classic Range Rover in that it doesn’t have the same often negative connotations of the newer models. Supremely quiet and comfortable they lack all the annoying modern interruptions of technology, but remain an immensely safe, luxuriously practical and stylish family holdall with an excellent network of specialist suppliers and garages.

When it was launched VW’s ID Buzz caused a stir with its striking looks and colour choices, not to mention its electric powerplant. There hasn’t really been anything like it to compete, until now. Kia has launched its PV5, which like the ID Buzz comes in both people and van form, and while style is very subjective it certainly has striking looks, all be them different to the Buzz.
The real striking difference though is the price. At not far short of half the price of the lead-in Buzz Kia’s PV5 is always going to attract attention. It’s suggested range is shorter than the Buzz at between 183 to miles – the Buzz offers between 277 to 293 miles – but given the price differentials opting for the greater range PV5 will still offer a substantial price advantage with a more useable range.
Standard equipment across the PV5 range includes auto lights and wipers, powered, folding and heated door mirrors, auto wipers, air conditioning, keyless entry and start,
wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto, three drive modes and front and rear parking sensors with a rear reversing camera.
There are only two trim levels – Essential standard and long-range starting from £32,995 and Plus Long Range only at £38,295 – with the Plus model adding to that standard across-the-board equipment. The ID Buzz does beat this level of lead-in equipment and across its different model variations.
There’s no doubt that the ID Buzz has the edge in terms of range, equipment and arguably in both style and character, with

its long history of VW buses. The Kia may be somewhat more practical and down-toearth but it will still attract those looking for distinctive and stylish transport at a much more affordable price. There’s only one standard colour but a range of optional extra cost paint finishes are worth exploring because they do make a huge difference to the look of the PV5.
Range on the lead-in PV5 power unit could be an issue for some but if your usage involves more local driving for commutes, the school and shopping runs with the occasional longer journey then it might not be such an issue.
At the moment the PV5 is only offered with 5-seats but that should be remedied later this year when 6 and 7-seater variant will be introduced. It’s worth reiterating at this point that, again as with the ID Buzz, the PV5 is also offered in van form for those looking at a more ecologically and commercially viable option.
I have commented before in these pages that the designers of EVs seem to be competing to produce the most striking, brash and ‘out there’ designs possible to make their cars stand out in an everincreasing automotive EV crowd. A good case in point is the Hyundai Ioniq 9, a genuinely large machine that feels particularly spacious, not necessarily a given with large cars, utilising the interior space very effectively.

From a style point of view, which is obviously subjective, the feedback on my Ioniq 9 test model was not entirely positive. The feedback changed for the interior though, where without exception everyone thought it not only spacious and comfortable but extremely tactile, premium and stylish. Externally the Ioniq 9’s looks are much improved with lighter paint finishes and the same can be said of the

interior too. Light interiors always tend to look classier but very effectively make an interior feel light and airy too.
The range starts from £64,995 with three trim levels, the top-line version costing £78,595. All bar one version offers seven seats with a six-seat model providing two individual chairs in the middle seating row. Standard fare across all models includes three zone climate control, smart cruise, power tailgate, wireless phone charging, powered, heated and folding door mirrors, heated front seats and steering wheel, power front seats, automatic flush door handles plus auto lights, wipers and dimming mirrors.
My test model was the Ultimate version (£73,496) and adds such niceties as a panoramic glass sunroof, heated front and middle row seats plus ventilated front ones too. A head up display (very useful and easy to read), a superb Bose sound system and

rear privacy glass. Finished in Biophillic Blue Pearl with a light interior the moment you opened the door it genuinely looked a million dollars in terms of style, feel and quality.
Ultimate models upwards add a heat pump to assist range by keeping the battery at an optimal temperature and makes the heating and ventilation system much more efficient. All Ioniq 9 models have a 110-kwh battery and the lead-in version with rear-wheeldrive develops 218PS, the top-line version develops 427PS. My 307PS all-wheel-drive test version, offers a potential range of 372 miles, although in real-world-driving I’d suggest a more realistic range would be in the order of 300 miles. That’s still a very useable range.

Considering the size of the Ioniq 9 the handling is surprisingly good, although you aren’t going to be powering along twisting cross country routes. Comfort is the key and you couldn’t really want for anything such is the level of standard equipment. If you like the look, want a genuinely impressive interior, and let’s face it you spend most of your time inside a car, then the Ioniq 9 is an example of where a manufacturer still puts quality above cost.
Seeing Dorset from the water is incredibly relaxing. The pace slows down and familiar places feel just a little more special when viewed from Dorset Queen, the only vintage motor yacht operating on the South Coast of England. With spring arriving and the lighter evenings returning, Dorset Cruises is welcoming the new season with a collection of relaxed experiences.

Easter on the River Frome Easter Sunday brings the first Wareham River Cruise of the year.
Departing Poole Quay at 10am, Dorset Queen turns west and drifts into the calm of the River Frome. This relaxing cruise up the picturesque river takes around 1 hour 10 minutes.
Guests step ashore in the historic Saxon town of Wareham for just over an hour, with time to explore at leisure, stroll beside the river or pause for a coffee before reboarding for the return journey. The cruise
arrives back into Poole Harbour at around 1:30pm, easing gently back into the hustle and bustle of the Quay.
The onboard bar remains open throughout, with live commentary from the Captain on the return leg and a welcoming crew always happy to share insights about this beautiful stretch of Dorset.

You can weave these quick exercises into any part of your day.
New research suggests that small increases in daily moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity may reduce the risk of death.
The study, which was published in The Lancet, examined data from almost 95,000 middle-aged and older adults in the UK, and 40,000 people from Norway, Sweden and the US. Researchers, led by academics from the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences, found that just five minutes extra of exercise per day could reduce 6% of deaths among the least active people, and among the general population it could reduce the risk of deaths by 10%.
Figures from the UK arm of the study, taken from the UK Biobank study, also show that reducing sedentary time by 30 minutes a day could reduce 4.5% of deaths among all adults taking part in the study, apart from those who were already very active.

This important research shows that even just a few minutes of movement each day can deliver meaningful health benefits. With that in mind, we spoke to Tara Riley – pilates, barre, and strength trainer – who shared five short-burst exercises that can be easily woven into even the busiest schedules.
“Squats are fantastic, especially if you’ve done lots of sitting during the day. They are a really great way to reactivate those glutes and use those legs,” says Riley. “For a standard squat, just put your legs about hip-width apart and send your bottom backwards and shift your weight into your heels.
“You could even do some squats hovering over a chair as that can help give you a good sense of where your body should be. If you want to make them harder, you could also do little pulses to really fire up your legs so your glutes feel really warm by the end of it.”
“I would also recommend some sort of variation of a plank,” advises Riley. “A plank is a really good way to build strength and stability as you are stabilising through your shoulders, your hips and through your core.”
However, she recognises that holding planks for a long period of time can be challenging, so has suggested some options for beginners looking to work their way up to it. “You can always start on your hands and knees and do knee taps,” suggests Riley. “For this, hover your knees off the ground and then tap them back down. Then as you get stronger, hover them off and hold for 20 seconds. Also, if your wrists aren’t super happy in this position, you can always go onto your elbows.”
“I am also a big fan of hip mobility, because I know it’s an area that a lot of people really suffer with. Lots of people have got tight hips or painful hips, and sometimes that comes from doing a lot of sitting,” says Riley.
“Everyone walks and goes up and down stairs, but that’s actually only moving that joint in two directions, forwards and backwards, and really that joint wants to move side to side and in a circle to keep it healthy and happy.”

She highlights how exercises like hip and leg circles can be done at anytime and anywhere, and can really help with your mobility. “Stand up and pop your hand on a surface and lift one leg straight forward and back to standing 15-20 times and then lift it back for the same amount of reps,” instructs Riley, “You’re going to start to feel those glutes going, and then you can also lift it out to the side again for the same amount of reps.
“Then bring the knee forwards, and then circle it out to the side, and the round to the back so you’re doing a big hip or leg circle. This is a really good strengthening but also mobilising hip exercise.”
“If you sit at a desk all day long, you might have a tendency to start to hunch forward to look at your work screen,” recognises Riley. “Doing core exercises like tabletop toe taps is really good for strengthening the core to help you sit and stand up straight.”
For tabletop top taps, you start on the floor. “Lie on your back and take your legs into a tabletop position, so your knees are bent,” instructs Riley. “Make sure your knees are above your hips and your shins are parallel to the floor, and then just tap one toe down at a time and bring them back up to table top position.
“Try to do that while breathing, but also without your back moving. So, make sure that you aren’t arching your back and are really working into that core. If you’re feeling really strong, you could curl forwards and keep your head off the floor while you tap your toes.”
“I think your shoulder mobility and the ability to move your arms is really important for your back and for how your shoulders feel, so an exercise like shoulder glides can be really great,” says Riley. “Start by standing upright against the wall, so the back of your head and shoulder blades are both touching the wall.
“Reach both your arms all the way up overhead, so the backs of your hands are also against that wall, and then draw those elbows down towards your waist and up again. Try to keep the back of your hands and your arms against the wall as you do that.”

In this conversation, we discuss women in business, explore what International Women’s Day signifies for Shikha, and share her valuable tips and tricks for building confidence

International Women’s Day is always a moment of reflection for me not just as a clinic owner, but as a woman, a mother, and a woman of colour who has navigated her way through industries that didn’t always feel built for me.
Confidence is something people assume you either have or you don’t . The truth is, it ’s built over time through experience, resilience, and perseverance. There were moments early in my career as a pharmacist where I felt I had to work twice as hard to be heard. Representation was limited, and the pressure to prove myself was constant . But those challenges shape you they strengthen your voice and your belief in your place within the industry
One thing that always stands out when I look back at the early 2000s is how different aesthetics was especially hair removal At the time, options were limited, results were inconsistent , and technology simply wasn’t where it is today Fast forward to now, and laser treatments have evolved beyond recognition They ’re safer, more inclusive, more effective and able to treat a wider range of skin tones with confidence. That progression mirrors everything we do at Elegant Clinic. My values strongly align with inclusivity, everyone is welcome.
This International Women’s Day, my message is simple confidence isn’t always loud. Sometimes it ’s quiet resilience. Sometimes it ’s choosing yourself, over and over again.

From nutrition-focused to food that reminds us of childhood, here are a few key books from 2025.
Last year brought an array of amazing cookbooks; TV icon Mary Berry turned 90 and released a book celebrating the milestone, Rick Stein wrote his first-ever festive food cookbook at 78, US chef Samin Nosrat published the much-anticipated follow-up to Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat – later made into a Netflix show – and Ottolenghi collaborator, Sami Tamimi released Boustany, a celebration of Palestinian vegetables. But in case you missed some of the other releases, here are some of our favourites from 2025.
MENOlicious by Mariella Frostrup and Belles Berry
It’s not a stretch to say there’s been revolution around how openly menopause is now spoken about, from public figures to workplaces, women are sharing their experience and there’s more information and resources around to help.

Nutrition has long been known to be a great way to support physical and mental health during menopause. As women go through profound change, food that once felt OK might need an upgrade, because the way our bodies handle the fuel we put into it changes.
So, for this important cookbook, MENOlicious (DK RED, £22), journalist and menopause awareness activist Mariella Frostrup teamed up with chef and daughter of Dame Mary Berry, Belles Berry, to demystify midlife nutrition.
The two women met on World Menopause Day in 2022, thanks to a mutual friend, and the idea for the book was born. They insist the concept isn’t a diet, but ‘a reboot’, and they worked with Hala El-Shafie, dietician and consultant with more than 20 years’ experience in nutrition and women’s health.
The ‘method’ focuses on six pillars; nutrient-dense food, balancing blood sugar, phytoestrogens (e.g. flaxseeds and legumes), hydration, limiting triggers (e.g. caffeine, salt, alcohol), and finally, exercise.

You’ll find breakfasts like matcha bircher muesli and kale pancakes with tahini butter; convenient lunches like lime, tamarind and green veg noodle lunch pots, and easy dinners such as fisherman’s curry.
The pair note that 90% of the book’s recipes take just 30 minutes or less to make, so most of the meals are simple and accessible – while promising to support bone-strengthening and hormone balancing on a tasty plate.
Sugar and Spice by Remi Idowu Content creator and recipe developer Remi Idowu launched her own baking business at 19 and now has more than million followers across Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest, even making the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.
Her 2025 debut cookbook, Sugar and Spice (Ebury Press, £26) brings together her love for the food of her parents’ Ghanaian and Nigerian heritage and her penchant for puddings.
ABOVE
While most cookbooks have a small dessert section towards the end, Sugar and Spice celebrates the sweet and savoury in equal measures. ‘As I started experimenting in my kitchen, I found so much joy in playing with flavours from different cultures. It didn’t take long to discover my sweet tooth’, she writes – and she threw herself into baking at a young age.
Self-taught Idowu learned from her mum’s home cooking how to pack flavour into simple ingredients and it shows in her accessible, delicious-sounding recipes.
The sections cover things like ‘classics with a twist’ – think braised beef short ribs with stilton mash or honey jalapeño cornbread –and ‘better than takeaways’, providing some great, cheaper alternatives (for example, mango habanero chicken wings).
At the same time, she also delves into the food of her childhood, including her mum’s jollof rice, groundnut soup and yam and egusi stew – a classic Nigerian dish. As well as, of course, plenty of puddings (try the cookies and cream cheesecake brownies).

Live to Eat by Emily English
Known online as @emthenutritionist, Emily English made a big name for herself sharing healthy recipes on social media. Her first cookbook in 2024, So Good: Food You Want To Eat, Designed by a Nutritionist, was a bestseller, and she returned in 2025 with another banger – Live to Eat (Seven Dials, £25).
These days the 30-year-old has more than two million social media followers who love her ethos that’s all about celebrating delicious food (and also happens to be good for you) without restriction.
A former model, English left the industry when it was starting to impact her relationship with food, and studied for a Bsc degree at King’s College London in nutrition instead. She touts the importance of protein and its role in keeping you full
for longer, fibre as the unsung hero and how to balance carbohydrates and sugar in your diet.
English also shares her tips around stress, sleep and movement, as well as daily habits at different meal times that helps keep her on track and feeling good. Think creating a strong morning routine, and going for a 15-minute walk after lunch.
Expect breakfasts like balsamic mushroomstuffed omelette, or sweet potato fritters with soft boiled eggs; lunches like red Thai coconut gyoza soup, filling dinners including lamb and feta burgers with cucumber slaw and garlic yoghurt, and puddings that won’t make you feel like you’re missing out. Who’s going to say no to toasted oat chocolate tiffin?

INGREDIENTS
1kg chicken pieces
1tsp salt
1tbsp black pepper
500–700g smoked turkey (ask your butcher to cut it into pieces)
500ml water
3 bay leaves
2tbsp chicken bouillon powder
2 large tomatoes
For the paste:
1 large red onion
Thumb-sized piece of ginger
4 garlic cloves
1 Scotch bonnet chilli
For the peanut butter sauce:
250g sugar-free peanut butter
2tbsp tomato purée
500ml boiling water
1. Start by preparing the paste base for the soup. Roughly chop the onion, ginger, garlic and chilli, put into a food processor or blender and whizz until you get a chunky paste. If you’re without a food processor, finely mince by hand.
2. Season the chicken pieces with the salt and pepper, ensuring they are well coated, then put into a large pot with the smoked turkey pieces and the paste. Pour in the water, or just enough to cover the meat, then add the bay leaves and bouillon powder.
3. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and cook gently for about 25 minutes, or until the chicken is tender and cooked through.
4. Meanwhile, in a heatproof bowl, mix together the peanut butter and tomato purée. Add the boiling water and stir until smooth and well blended. Transfer to a saucepan and cook over medium–high heat, whisking continuously, for 5-8 minutes until the oil starts to separate.
5. When your chicken and turkey are cooked, drop the whole tomatoes into the pot and let them soften for a few minutes. Remove the tomatoes with a slotted spoon, transfer to a blender and blend until smooth.
6. Add the peanut butter sauce and the blended tomatoes to the chicken and smoked turkey. Stir together thoroughly, ensuring the peanut sauce is fully incorporated into the soup. Increase the heat to high and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until you see more oil rise to the surface. Taste the soup and adjust the seasoning with salt, if needed.

INGREDIENTS
Spray oil, for greasing
300g cottage cheese
100ml milk
5 medium free-range eggs
100g baby spinach leaves, wilted and chopped
10g chopped chives
100g smoked salmon, chopped
Zest of 1 lemon
4 sheets of filo pastry, each cut in half
50g feta cheese, crumbled
Salt and pepper

INGREDIENTS
Sunflower oil, for greasing
500g plain yogurt
1 egg
1 tbsp milk
50g walnuts, roughly chopped
280g porridge oats
2tsp bicarbonate of soda
½tsp flaky sea salt
25g chia seeds
30g pumpkin seeds, plus 1tbsp to sprinkle on top
25g sunflower seeds, plus 1tbsp to sprinkle on top
1tsp poppy seeds, to sprinkle on top
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan Gas Mark 4. Lightly spray a 20cm deep springform cake tin with oil.
2. In a blender or food processor, blend the cottage cheese with the milk until smooth. Transfer to a large mixing bowl. Add the eggs to the bowl and whisk until well combined. Stir in the wilted spinach, chives, smoked salmon, lemon zest and salt and pepper to taste. Mix until all the ingredients are evenly distributed.
3. Layer the halved filo sheets into the oiled cake tin, spraying each sheet lightly with oil as you go. Ensure the sheets are layered evenly to form a sturdy crust, overlapping to cover any gaps.
4. Pour the cottage cheese and egg mixture into the prepared filo crust. Tuck the edges of the filo back in on themselves to create a neat edge – you can be rough with this; don’t worry about it being perfect. Sprinkle the crumbled feta evenly over the top of the filling.
5. Bake in the oven for 60 minutes, or until the filling is just set. It will continue to set as it cools, so allow the quiche to cool slightly before serving. This also makes it easier to slice.

MAKES ONE 900G LOAF WITH 14 SLICES PER LOAF
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan/400°F/Gas 6). Grease the loaf tin with a little oil and line with non-stick baking parchment.
2. Place the yogurt, egg, and milk in a large mixing bowl (if using a hand whisk) or the bowl of a food processor. Mix on a medium speed for 10 seconds. Add the chopped walnuts, porridge oats, bicarbonate of soda, salt, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds to the mixture and mix on a medium speed for 25 seconds.
3. Transfer the batter to the prepared tin, level it out and scatter the extra pumpkin and sunflower seeds and the poppy seeds on top. Bake in the centre of the oven for 45 minutes until golden brown.
4. Using oven gloves, remove the tin from the oven and carefully turn out the loaf. Put it back in the tin upside down. Return to the oven and bake for a further 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and turn the loaf right side up onto a wire rack. Place a clean tea towel on top until you are ready to serve. Enjoy warm, with plenty of butter!
