As people across the UK and beyond search not just for longer lives, but better ones, Dorset-based nutritionist and naturopath Barbara Lovesy offers a compelling answer rooted in one of the world’s healthiest cultures. Her new book, Land of the Rising Lifespan: Japanese Rituals of Longevity (Balboa Press UK), explores why Japan consistently ranks among the longest-living nations, and how its simple, time-honoured practices can be woven into modern Western life.
At a time when wellness advice is louder and more confusing than ever, Lovesy’s message is refreshingly calm and grounded. Drawing on ten years of living in Japan, much of it spent in the ancient city of Nara, she reveals how longevity in Japan is not driven by trends or quick fixes, but by everyday rituals that nurture the body, mind and spirit, and place community and

purpose at the heart of wellbeing. You will discover how incorporating these rituals can alleviate common health concerns, enhance your diet and bring a deeper sense of peace.
“Living in Nara, surrounded by ancient temples and a deep respect for nature, completely reshaped my understanding of health,” says Lovesy. “Longevity in Japan isn’t about perfection. It’s about balance, connection and small daily choices that quietly add up over time.”
With its blend of expert insight, lived experience and gentle encouragement, Land of the Rising Lifespan will appeal to readers interested in longevity, wellness, Japanese culture and preventative health, particularly those seeking evidence-based, holistic approaches that feel achievable in everyday life.

Mayflower is excited to announce a transformative new programme that will deliver outstanding theatre opportunities directly into schools and community hubs across Southampton.
In partnership with Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill, Redbridge Community School, and St. Patrick’s Primary School, Mayflower is expanding its youth strategy to reach more young people and families than ever before - particularly those facing barriers to attending theatre venues. The St. Patrick’s School initiative is in collaboration with Southampton & IOW Music, a growing partnership of local, regional and national organisations, working together to build an inspiring and inclusive programme of music making that reflects the cultural diversity of our areas.
Having reviewed its youth engagement strategy, Mayflower is committed to creating deeper, more meaningful impact across all Southampton communities. By
embedding arts activity within schools themselves, the programme removes barriers, builds confidence, and opens the door to the life-changing power of musical theatre.
Teachers will receive specialist training with one becoming the production’s musical director and students will help shape the arts offer through a new Ministry of the Arts. All pupils will also enjoy theatre trips with free travel.
“We’re committed to making the arts accessible to all communities,” said Patrick O’Sullivan, Head of Participation at Mayflower. “Bringing our work into schools ensures young people can experience the transformative power of live performance.”
The initial partnership period runs from October 2025 to July 2026, with all organisations committed to reviewing impact and exploring expansion across more schools in the future.

Wessex Cancer Support is inviting people across Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to take part in two inspiring fundraising challenges in 2026 — one forged in fire, the other tested on ice. Both events aim to push personal boundaries while raising vital funds to support people affected by cancer locally.
Returning for its third year, the muchanticipated Firewalk builds on the success of the 2025 event, which raised more than £12,000. As the charity marks 45 years of supporting local people during and after cancer, a new group of participants is being called upon to take on the challenge.
Taking place from 6pm on Thursday 26 March at the Solent Hotel & Spa, Whiteley, the Firewalk involves a 20-foot barefoot walk across blazing hot coals, with temperatures exceeding 1,000°F. Guided by experienced professionals, participants learn to overcome fear, stay focused and achieve something many never thought possible. Each participant is asked to raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorship, funding free counselling, wellbeing services, complementary therapies, support groups and courses.
This April, Wessex Cancer Support is also launching a bold new challenge — the Icewalk. Hosted by the Bournemouth
Marriott Hotel on its pool terrace overlooking West Cliff beach, the Icewalk invites around 50 participants to walk barefoot across a 20-foot path of shattered glass. Colder and more confronting than a Firewalk, the Icewalk tests calmness, focus and mental resilience.
Under expert supervision and full safety briefings, participants complete the walk in under two minutes, gaining lasting confidence and a strong sense of achievement. Open to individuals, teams and corporate groups, the Icewalk offers professional support, certificates of completion and memorable bragging rights.
Both events represent a choice to face fear so others do not face cancer alone. Places are limited and demand is expected to be high.

Diverse Abilities’ Treecycling 2026 has officially wrapped up, and what an incredible achievement it has been. Over the Treecycling weekend between 8th and 11th January, 105 dedicated volunteers gave an amazing 840 hours of their time to collect 2,488 Christmas trees from the local Dorset and Hampshire community.
Thanks to this phenomenal effort and the generosity of our supporters, Dorset’s Disability Charity has raised over £35,000, all of which goes directly to support children and adults with physical and learning disabilities thank you to generous sponsorship from Waste Management Facilities.
Treecycling has saved around 50 tonnes of waste from landfill and helped fund vital services that make a difference every day.
The money raised could fund a whole year of the charity’s STARs siblings support service, which provides a safe and

understanding space for young people who often face greater pressures and responsibilities than their peers. STARS ensures these siblings receive the care and support they deserve.
Francesca Potton, Community Fundraiser at Diverse Abilities commented: “We are overwhelmed by the support we have received this year from the volunteers and from the local community booking to have their Christmas Trees collected by us. I want to say a huge thank you to Wessex Water, Avon Material Supplies, Halo Design, MATA Construction, Charles Trent, WMF and Plants for Trade who have volunteered their time over the weekend to help us collect a record number of Christmas Trees.”

As we enter 2026, many landlords are asking themselves a difficult question: is this the year to sell up, or is it time to ride out yet another wave of legislative change?
With the Renters Reform Act due to come into force on 1 May, uncertainty is running high across the private rental sector.
Recently, the government confirmed the updated wording for new tenancy agreements, making it clear that landlords who continue to use outdated Assured Shorthold Tenancies (ASTs) could face penalties of up to £4,000, issued by local authorities. For compliant landlords who have always tried to do things properly, this feels like another looming risk in an already challenging environment.
For many, rental property is not simply an investment—it is their income, their future pension, and a way to remain financially independent in retirement. It represents entrepreneurship, security, and a desire not to rely on the state later in life. That is precisely why the scale of potential fines and penalties under the new Act is so concerning. A simple administrative mistake could wipe out several years’ worth of hard-earned profit.
While the intention behind the Renters Act is to protect tenants and tackle rogue landlords, there is widespread frustration that those who have historically ignored regulations are unlikely to change their behaviour. Meanwhile, responsible landlords shoulder the cost, stress, and risk of compliance.

Adding further pressure are upcoming changes to energy efficiency requirements. With EPC ratings set to rise to a minimum of ‘C’ between 2028 and 2030, many landlords will need to invest significant sums into upgrading their properties— often at a time when profits are already being squeezed. Combined with the additional 2% tax on rental income, particularly painful for landlords who are not operating through limited companies and still carry mortgages, the financial equation is becoming increasingly tight.
Hindsight, of course, is a wonderful thing. The buy-to-let landscape has changed dramatically over the past decade.
There was a time when building a portfolio with mortgages made clear financial sense, as interest costs were tax deductible. Today, purchasing through a limited company is often the only viable route—but even that feels uncertain when tax rules and legislation continue to shift with each political cycle.
One thing remains constant: anxiety often stems from a lack of knowledge. The antidote is education, preparation, and professional support. Landlords should ensure they are fully informed, working with reputable letting agents who truly understand the current legal landscape. Robust tenant vetting, strict due diligence, and proactive property management have never been more important.

For those currently dealing with problematic tenants or serious rent arrears, it is vital to seek legal advice as soon as possible. While Section 21 notices remain in place for now, time is of the essence as reforms continue to roll out.
A good letting agent can make the difference between a stress-free rental experience and a costly headache. Professional agents handle marketing, tenant referencing, compliance, deposit protection, safety checks, rent collection, and maintenance—dramatically reducing the risk of fines, disputes, and void periods. In a competitive and regulated market, expert management provides peace of mind and protects long-term returns.

From heritage maximalism to lighting as art, these are the key looks gaining traction.
Looking for ideas on how to keep your decor and interior styling bang up-to-date? With the focus on new horizons, home and design platform Houzz has gathered insights from its community of homeowners, designers and home improvement professionals to forecast the top home design trends for 2026.
Reflecting a desire for spaces that balance character with comfort, here’s a look at the styles we expect to gain momentum in the year ahead…
Heritage maximalism
“Maximalist interior design has been gaining momentum among UK homeowners for some time, but we expect a heritage-driven twist to emerge,” reveals Kiya KellyPaine, Houzz home design trends expert.

“Known as ‘heritage maximalism,’ this design style incorporates nods to British roots while layering in contemporary sensibility, to create a timeless, modern appeal,” she explains. “Think bold colour palettes, historical motifs and ornate detailing, from furnishings to finishes.”
Mel Massey, founder of Mel Massey Studio, says: “We’ve noticed more clients embracing bold interior design choices, from richly detailed wallpaper and patterned upholstery to dramatic hues.
“At the same time, homeowners are layering in modern touches to personalise their spaces,” highlights Massey. While these choices may have once felt intimidating, she says visualisation tools such as mood boards give homeowners “the confidence to combine these elements into a look that feels curated, not chaotic.”

Hidden spaces and seamless design
Whether you’re looking to optimise smaller spaces or simply minimise clutter, Kelly-Paine says smart design features, “such as tucked-away home bars and concealable built-ins, can help you achieve a more streamlined, sophisticated look.”
“These hidden spaces give homeowners the best of both worlds: functional features when you need them and seamless design when you don’t,” she adds.
Omar Bhatti, founder and design director at Space Shack says: “As our clients look to personalise their homes, requests for bespoke joinery are becoming more common. Not only do these custom solutions add character, but they’re practical and tailored to fit our clients’ lifestyles.”

Immersive visualisation becomes the new blueprint Homeowners and design professionals alike are increasingly relying on 3D modelling to convey their ideas and explore possibilities, notes Kelly-Paine.
“These visualisation tools are mutually beneficial for homeowners and professionals, as they help to set and manage clear expectations throughout the course of a project,” she explains.
Laura Evans, founder and interior designer at Brick and Stone Interiors, says: “Visualisation tools like 3D floor plans have been a game changer for me and my clients.
“By bringing concepts to life, digital models give my clients a realistic picture of what to expect,” says Evans. “Not only does this ensure we’re aligned throughout the process, but it also helps them communicate any changes proactively.”

As homeowners seek to create calming sanctuaries within their homes, Kelly-Paine says photos featuring cocooning spaces with layered neutrals, organic materials and tactile finishes are among the most popular images on Houzz.
“Together, these elements create a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels both comfortable and relaxed.”
Evans agrees: “In recent years, our clients have been gravitating toward ‘organic modern’ style, from the bedroom to the kitchen, and everywhere in between.
“As they look to create a softer take on minimalism, homeowners are introducing warm neutrals, texture and organic shapes to create serene, restorative spaces.”
She continues: “We expect to see that trend continue, as it’s a widely adaptable aesthetic that works well across home design styles.”

The return of dark wood
“Dark wood tones such as walnut and mahogany are re-emerging, as homeowners strive to bring a sense of depth to their interiors,” says Kelly-Paine.

Moreover, she says searches on Houzz reflect this resurgence, with googling for ‘dark wood’ rising 187% in the first three quarters of the year compared with the same period in 2024.
Bhatti says: “For years, many homeowners have favoured lighter wood tones and whitewashed finishes, but recently clients have been showing an interest in deeper, more dramatic wood tones.
“Whether that be for kitchen joinery, bespoke built-ins or even wall cladding. To offset darker wood tones, we often pair them with warm metals or textured stone for a more balanced look,” he explains.

Kelly-Paine says research shows homeowners are eager to have more transparency throughout the renovation process. “41% said a clearer timeline would have improved their project experience. And almost the same share wanted better communication from their pros (40%).”
Indeed, Bhatti says access to a real-time communication platform has been instrumental with his clients. “It makes for much smoother collaboration; clients stay informed with access to real-time project updates and as a result, they feel less stressed and more empowered throughout the process.
“Considering how effective it is, I’d expect this type of collaborative software to be adopted more widely across the industry.”

From sculptural alabaster pendants to playful glass forms, homeowners are introducing statement lighting to transform their spaces in more ways than one, outlines Kelly-Paine.

“Of course, lighting plays the functional role of illuminating a space, but when thoughtfully selected and positioned, lighting fixtures can be standalone works of art.”
Massey says: “Lighting fixtures have become more of a focal point among our clients, as they look to infuse personality or even a bit of drama into their spaces.
“For anyone considering statement lighting, it’s worth using visualisation tools to understand how a fixture will sit within the space before making a final decision,” she advises.

Weight-loss injections such as Mounjaro are becoming increasingly popular - and for many people, they can be an effective tool for reducing appetite, improving blood sugar control and supporting meaningful weight loss. But as Dr Selina Gray, Lifestyle GP at Dr Helen Medical in Ringwood (sister clinic to Dr Helen Allergy), explains, these medications were never designed to work alone.
More people are now accessing weightloss injections online or without adequate medical guidance, increasing the risk of side effects, nutritional deficiencies and loss of muscle mass. When appetite drops sharply, many people unintentionally
under-eat, missing essential nutrients required for immunity, hormones, bone health and energy. Without the right support, rapid weight loss can also lead to reduced muscle mass - a key factor in longterm metabolism, strength and maintaining weight once treatment stops.
Another common concern is what happens when people come off the injections. Without a strong foundation of nutrition, strength training and behavioural change, appetite often returns quickly, and old habits can follow. This is why rebound weight gain is so frequent in those who haven’t had proper support.

At Dr Helen Medical, the approach is different. Dr Gray and her colleagues provide a fully supervised programme, including detailed medical assessment, regular monitoring, muscle-preservation strategies and personalised lifestyle coaching. For suitable patients, weightloss injections can be a helpful short-term tool - but the focus is always on long-term, sustainable health.
If you’re considering weight-loss injections or want to ensure you’re using them safely, the team at Dr Helen Medical is here to help.

Imagine your property journey was a cup of tea. Would you rather have it with stale biscuits and lukewarm conversation — or served by someone who genuinely cares about the flavour?
That’s where Camerons steps in: the zesty, no-nonsense property pros who make renting and letting feel… well, human again.
At a time when property chats often sound like ancient hieroglyphics (“What is a Section 21 again?”), Camerons keeps it refreshingly simple. They describe themselves as a “modern, vibrant, upbeat agent” — and they’re not wrong. They’ve built a reputation for being honest, realistic, and ridiculously dedicated to matching people with the right place to live.
Here’s the scoop: whether you’re a tenant on the hunt for a cosy one-bed flat, a family dreaming of garden space, or a landlord wishing someone else would handle the paperwork, Camerons has got your back. From student pads near lively hubs to family homes in quieter corners of Bournemouth — they really do try to tailor every search to your wishlist.
But what makes them stand out? First, their approach isn’t robotic. They actually talk to

you — and listen. You won’t get lost in email loops or vague updates. Clear advice? Check. Friendly guidance? Double check.
A human voice on the other end of the phone that doesn’t sound like it wants to escape to Tahiti? Absolutely.
And the love doesn’t just come from us saying nice things. Testimonials on their own site show people grateful for help finding exactly what they needed — whether that’s proximity to transport, suitable schools, or even a garden for that plant obsession.
Landlords, take note: managing property is supposed to be stressful — but not when the team at Camerons steps in. They assist with everything from tenant notices to rent collection and even those pesky legal bits that make most people’s eyes glaze over.
And students? You’re not an afterthought here. Unlike some agencies that see “student” and sprint in the opposite direction, Camerons embraces the vibrant, dynamic energy you bring — and they’ll help you find a place that fits both lifestyle and budget.
So here’s the tea: if you want a property service that feels like a collaboration — grounded in professionalism, wrapped in friendly vibes, and delivered with a smile — Camerons turns a daunting market into something genuinely exciting. Go on, give them a call.
Your future self (in their ideal space) will thank you.

The hit Netflix show is back on our screens
With three smash hit seasons of the Regency-era drama Bridgerton under its belt, Netflix released the fourth on January 29. The show – based on books by Julia Quinn – tells the stories of the eight Bridgerton siblings as they search for love in London’s high society during the early 1800s, while an anonymous gossip columnist narrates their every move.
With Lady Whistledown finally unveiled, the new season focuses on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and his romance with Miss Sophie Baek, a twist on the classic fairy tale Cinderella.
The members of ‘the ton’ dance in grand ballrooms, promenade in manicured gardens and host tea in the most elegant of homes. So, if you want to embrace your inner Lady Danbury or Viscount Anthony Bridgerton, check out these exclusive stays.

Glenapp Castle, Ayrshire Travelling down the grand tree-clad driveway to approach Glenapp Castle, you’ll feel like you could easily be in stepping back in time to the 1880s Bridgerton era. Built in 1870 – later in the century than the Bridgerton books and series are set, yet with all the Regency charm, it was a home for several high-society owners before being restored to its former glory in 1994 by hoteliers.
Now a 21-bedroom five-star Relais & Châteaux hotel, it’s hidden in a 110-acre private estate along the dramatic Firth of Clyde – and, if you really want to live like the ton, is home to Scotland’s largest castle penthouse suite.
There’s a real sense of grandeur and a bygone era here; with manicured gardens and glasshouses perfect for promenading in your finest attire, or put on your country gear and take to the UNESCO biosphere of the remote surrounding area.
Culinary highlights include a three-AA-Rosette restaurant in the castle itself (think red walls and chandeliers) and The Azalea, set within a glasshouse in the historic walled gardens with a menu designed from the elaborate kitchen garden.
HOW TO BOOK: Glenapp Castle’s Garden View Suites start from £415 on a B&B basis (glenappcastle.com / 01465 831212)
The Gore, London Bridgerton is, of course, set in Mayfair, and The Gore provides a stunning West London escape for Regency-era fans in nearby Kensington. First built in 1851 as a residence for visitors attending London’s Great Exhibition, and established as a hotel in 1892, it’s now part of the Starhotels Collezione. With antique carved beds and original artworks, it’s six floors of period details, and over the years has attracted many celebrities, artists and aristocrats.
The Judy Garland Suite – named after the actor who stayed there during a run of performances – mixes Hollywood glamour and ornate, historical charm with a gilded bed and stained glass windows. The hotel’s iconic Bar 190, with its wood panelled walls and cosy booths, is known for its cocktails, whiskeys and gins – as well as being around the corner from The Royal Albert Hall.
HOW TO BOOK: Rates for a Cosy Double room start from £210.00 per night. Rates for the Judy Garland Suite are approx. £489 per room, per night, excluding breakfast. Book at collezione.starhotels.com.

The Cotswolds come with much of it’s own historic charm, so add five-star manor house Ellenborough Park into the mix and you’ve got elegant, Regency vibes in five-star restored luxury.
The 15th-century house feels positively aristocratic along with soft and romantic, think grand hallways, stone archways, manicured gardens, and refined interiors echoing the aesthetics of Regency storytelling on screen.
While there are several different overnight options on the estate, the main house offers three open plan suites that feel Bridgerton-worthy, styled in tweeds and floral wallpaper, with four-poster beds.
With a famously good afternoon tea, guests can dig into the decadent experience with a glass of champagne, or take advantage of the more modern addition of the spa and heated outdoor pool.
HOW TO BOOK: Room rates start from £269 per night for a double room on a B&B basis (ellenboroughpark. com).

Prestonfield House, Edinburgh
You don’t need to go entirely rural to feel like you’re starring in a period romance. Five-star Prestonfield House is just five minutes from Edinburgh city centre, with all the seclusion and old-school glamour of a country estate.
Once called Priestfield, the original house dated back to medieval times. Sir James Dick acquired it in 1677 but had to entire rebuild it after a fire and renamed it Prestonfield (his portrait still hangs in it today).
Set within a 20-acre garden, the bedrooms all emit a dark, moody opulence, in various sizes with various views (including of Arthur’s Seat or Royal Holyrood Park).
The most extravagant room – The Owner’s Suite – is entered from a private turret stair and hallway, and is lavishly furnished with its own grand entrance lobby and a library-style bathroom, and all the dramatic romance of a Bridgerton storyline.
The theatrics don’t stop elsewhere in the hotel; think candle-lit drawing rooms, antique furnishings, lavish velvet textures, and peacocks roaming the manicured gardens.
HOW TO BOOK: Room rates for Prestonfield House start from £375 per room, per night and includes breakfast (prestonfield.com).

The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa, Bath Bridgerton may be set in London but a lot of the filming is done in Bath (as well as Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire) to make use of the historic architecture. In fact, No.1 Royal Crescent – Bath’s iconic sweeping curved street – is the exterior of the Featherton family home, and of course, Lady Whistledown herself. Be part of the city’s landmark and embrace the social-climbing Featherington way and stay several doors down the same street at The Royal Crescent Hotel.
With 45 rooms, this five-star is deceptively grand, and the hotel even offers a ‘Bridgerton package’ from April 1 to October 31. It includes a one-night stay and a two-hour tour of Bath taking in the filming locations including The Modiste and Lady Danbury’s house, as well as learning how the streets of Bath were turned into Regency Mayfair for filming (plus a six-course tasting dinner menu and access to the hotel’s spa).
HOW TO BOOK: Rates at The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa start from £410 on a B&B basis (royalcrescent.co.uk). The Bath on Screen package is from £788 per night.

How long has the role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde
The Musical been on your wishlist?
For a long time. I’ve actually been singing the material since college. These are songs that I’ve always loved to sing and it’s always been a dream role. In terms of the trajectory of my career it’s one of the biggest female roles in musical theatre when it comes to time on stage and the responsibility of playing her, because the whole show is about her. I feel like the role has come into my life at a good time. You need stamina and you need life knowledge for a part like this, so now is the perfect time for me to play her. If it had come any earlier I would have been too young. Then there’s the story itself. It’s such a powerful story and I feel so lucky that I get to tell it in my own way.
What’s your take on Elle as a character?
She’s a force to be reckoned with. She is a woman who is everything. Yes, she’s beautiful but she’s also intelligent, and women can be both things at the same time. She’s so underestimated, and I love her story arc within the show. She’s got fire and she’s so determined. She’s salt of the earth. First and foremost, she is a very loyal, kind friend and I really want to hone in on that. She’s a firecracker.
Can you relate to her in any way?
When it comes to being underestimated, I can definitely relate to her in that way, as well as how she’s judged in other ways. People think, ‘Oh, she’s blonde, so she’s not intelligent enough.’ I’ve had to contend with similar stuff.

When I first got given a leading role in the West End it was like, ‘She’s from a reality show, she can’t be good enough for the stage.’ Although my story is different to hers, I feel like I can actually draw on my own life experiences for this show.
And in what ways are you and Elle different?
She is born into wealth. She is born into a world where probably she would never have to work a day in her life if she didn’t want to. I’m from a working class family and I have to work to pay my taxes.
Is it daunting following in the footsteps of Reese in the movie and the likes of Sheridan Smith and Courtney Bowman in the musical?
I’m honoured that I’m playing a role that so many incredible women have played before and it’s inspiring to follow in their footsteps, but while I have seen so many different versions of Elle and I’ve loved every single one I’m thinking, ‘What can I do differently to put my own stamp on it?’
So, I am just going the extra mile to completely humanise her. With the comedy, the script is so well-written and so funny that I don’t have to add an extra comedy aspect to it, because I think Elle as a character and as she’s
written is naturally funny. For me it’s about stripping her back and making her as 3D as I possibly can.
Can you recall when you first saw the film and the impact it had on you?
I actually can’t remember watching it for the first time; I would have been so young. But it’s one of those films that you can watch repeatedly, and it never gets old. I love everything about the movie, from Reese Witherspoon’s performance to the fashion aspect of it. With the musical, we’re setting it in the modern day and it’s like a collaboration of theatre and fashion, which is a dream for me.
It’s such a feel-good show, but is there a serious message in there amidst all the fun?
Yes. That’s why I love Legally Blonde, because it’s funny but it’s got heart too. I really want audiences to feel for Elle when they come to see the show. I want them to care for her and I feel like there’s such a strong, powerful message in there. It’s as simple as ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’, which happens every single day in life.
Legally Blonde The Musical is playing at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton from 24th to 28th February. Tickets are available now from www.mayflower.org.uk

Relaxed and inviting, cosy is the new luxury
If you’re looking at your kitchen in a whole new light, and thinking about a different theme or concept, there’s a growing movement towards spaces that prioritise comfort and warmth.
“Think muted tones, soft furnishings, and a modern take on traditional design,” says Looeeze Grossman, founder of The Used Kitchen Company. “Homeowners are looking for kitchens they actually enjoy being in, not just ones that look good on social media.”
Think relaxed, casual and harmonious blend of traditional and modern. Here’s how to create a space which feels congenial and bang up-to-date…

Painted kitchens
“The days of high gloss finishes are behind us for now,” says Grossman. “Painted kitchens have made a huge comeback thanks to their adaptability and timeless quality, whether solid wood or MDF.
“Painted doors in warm, comforting tones set the foundation for this new aesthetic,” explains Grossman.
Look for shaker-style details, vintage or reclaimed handles and warm tones to “create kitchens that look effortlessly chic and packed with warmth”.
Painted kitchens also open up your tile and worktop choices, highlights Grossman. “From wood to striking quartz, composite or porcelain worktops – all pair beautifully.

“Vintage mirrored splashbacks can add a modern twist, as can tiles laid in an intricate herringbone pattern, over the metro tiles [aka subway tiles] we’ve often seen in kitchens in recent years.”
It’s also time to switch out bright white and stark grey worktops. Grossman says she’s seeing a move towards warmer neutral tones.
“The beauty of a cosy kitchen is that everything should work within one colour palette.
“Nothing has to fight for attention, it all blends seamlessly, creating a natural warmth with a combo of paint colours and worktops.”
Moreover, she says bringing in living colours such as greens and beiges gives the space life, especially when used tonally in different shades.
“If you’re opting for a bold splashback or door colour, you can soften the look with blankets and seating cushions in lighter tones,” Grossman suggests.
Lighting is another key aspect, and extends to choosing softer lighting over the brightness of spotlights.

“Think vintage pendants over an island, and lamps on the walls. If you do opt for some spotlights, make sure they’re dimmable to create a warm, inviting atmosphere,” she advises.
When it comes to cosy storage, Grossman says it’s all about natural materials which complement each other.
“Natural wicker baskets instantly add warmth and texture over harsh plastic or metals. Glass jars with cork lids and simple ceramics look extremely attractive for storage on an open shelf; or creating a tidier larder.”
She continues: “Wicker works well for napkins, cutlery, and vegetables that don’t need to be refrigerated; glass and ceramics are ideal for dry ingredients.”
As Grossman points out, cosiness is as much about emotion as it is about design.
“Open shelving lets you display the things that matter… your favourite mugs, or tea set you spent ages finding.

“These are the things that give your kitchen personality and memories that define the cosy trend.”
To get the look, she suggests displaying your vases, showcasing your mug selection, and having stemware on show.
“But don’t mistake this as a time to over-clutter,” she warns. “Cosy kitchens still have style – pick your favourite pieces, add them to your shelves, and enjoy the display.”
Seating should be comfortable Uncomfortable stools, plastic chairs, or benches without a back don’t belong in a cosy kitchen, underlines Grossman.
If replacing them isn’t an option, she says to soften what you have. “Add upholstered bench pads in soft muted shades that bring warmth and country cottage-style elegance.”
Team with throws and cushions to create a relaxed, welcoming feel. “If you have bar stools, opt for a cushioned topper so people will actually want to sit down.
“And if your kitchen opens onto your garden, match your indoor soft furnishings to your outdoor cushions to create a sense of continuity.”
As Grossman puts it: “A cosy kitchen is a kitchen you’ll want to spend time in – it won’t feel cold or stark. “You’ll want to light a candle and snuggle up in the corner with a cup of coffee and a good book; or sit chatting for hours over a glass of wine with friends.”
She continues: “It’s about creating an emotional connection to the space that goes beyond just cooking… it’s a space that you want to live and be in.”

The Story Behind new style living
In a town known for its coastline, character and constant evolution, two local developers are quietly shaping some of Bournemouth’s most exciting homes. Lewis Keating and Jon Phillips, co-founders of New Style Living, have built a reputation for high-quality new builds, flawless finish standards and a hands-on approach that sets them apart.

Lewis and Jon’s partnership began long before they ever stepped onto a site together. The two attended the same school, but it wasn’t until 2020—when Jon built Lewis’s first ever new-build home— that the foundation of NSL Developments was laid. The project was a success, the collaboration was natural, and from there the pair have continued to grow, refine and elevate their craft.

With Jon’s deep experience on the tools and Lewis’s strength in acquisitions and day-to-day operations, they bring a balance that has proven to be the engine behind their success. “We’ve worked with the same core team for over five years,” says Lewis. “We only use trusted, recommended trades with strong local roots. That consistency is a big part of our quality.”
With both current sites now on the market, NSL Developments is preparing for a strong and ambitious year ahead. The business will be launching three new 2-bed new-build homes in Ferndown, alongside a focused expansion into:
Home extensions, loft conversions, renovations and bespoke work. As demand for trusted builders grows, NSL will offer Bournemouth homeowners a reliable, high-quality option for transforming existing spaces.
Lewis and Jon are actively seeking new sites, run-down homes and land opportunities. Their goal for 2026 is to secure multiple development plots that bring fresh life to underused spaces across Dorset.

Nothing feels more romantic than checking into a luxury hotel, in a beautiful new location with a partner. Whether its an adults-only hideaway secluded from the rest of the world, a boutique stay in a historic property, or villas built over the ocean, we’re really spoilt for choice. Here’s our pick of some absolute gems for those travelling as a pair.
With rolling hills, vineyards and pretty medieval towns, there’s something endlessly romantic about Tuscany, situated in the heart of Italy. Borgo Pignano, set in a 750-acre organic estate, dates back to the 12th century. A short drive from the hill towns of Volterra and San Gimignano (and in easy reach of Florence and Siena) this five-star hotel is made up of rooms in the tastefully restored main house, which still has a traditional feel, alongside smaller villas and maisonettes.

An infinity pool overlooks the glorious scenery of luscious hills, but the hotel still feels suitably secluded for a romantic getaway – and comes with an in-house Michelin-starred restaurant.
Make like the Romantic period artists drawn to the Tuscan hills and take a private drawing lesson together as part of Borgo Pignano’s art programme (there’s also a huge art collection on site). Alternatively, ride off together into the sunset on a horse-riding excursion in the rural countryside. As an added bonus, the hotel has some impressive eco-credentials – it’s heated on 100% renewable energy made in-house.
Rooms start at £304 (€350) per night based on two adults staying in a villa, on a B&B basis (borgopignano.com).
Jade Mountain brings the outdoors in, making guests feel like they’re in nature – while remaining as luxurious as it gets.
The best rooms are the suites known as ‘sanctuaries’, which have only three walls, ensuring complete privacy from your neighbours but open-air views of the Caribbean Sea, and the jewel of St. Lucia, the Piton Mountains.
Waking up with the fresh air, immersed in nature, guests of the sanctuary rooms can take a dip in their private, inroom infinity pools, before breakfast (in bed, if desired) – it really is a private haven for couples.
Big nature provides an excellent backdrop for romance here – there are no TVs, radios or in-room phones to encourage disconnection from the outside world (and other people).
Indulge in a couple’s massage or another holistic wellness treatment in your own room and embrace farm-to-table dining with a meal made from the hotel’s very own farm, where they grow most of their own ingredients.
Nightly rates start from £1,350 in a Sky Sanctuary on a room-only basis. jademountain.com.

On the Riviera Maya, where jungle meets azure shores, Valise Tulum offers suites with spectacular views – many with direct beach access or a private infinity pool. Kingsize beds are on wheels so that the beds can be rolled out onto private decks, making for an ultra-romantic stay where you can sleep under the stars – and wake up with the sunrise.
Made up of just 11 beachside and 11 jungle-side suites, each with private beach access, a natural cenote, and private plunge pools – they’re all romantic in their own way – the beachfront master suite is perhaps the most unique, comprising a luxury bathtub in the middle of the room and a seven-metre elevated palapa roof.
Take part in a wellness ceremony aimed at couples; the couple’s lunar ceremony, which includes a massage evoking the energy of the moon; and the couple’s fire ceremony, where guests can renew their connection with a cacao massage and exchange of vows.
Rooms at La Valise Tulum start from £399. Visit lavalisetulum.com.

Private beaches and clear seas may be romantic, but for something a little different, Oman offers dramatic landscapes for more adventurous couples. Perched on the majestic Green Mountains, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar claims to be the highest luxury resort in the Middle East – so expect incredible canyon views.
For something truly romantic, couples can enjoy a private dining experience at The Royal Edge, a clifftop platform overlooking the canyon, with dishes served by candlelight. The mountain trails are perfect for quiet sunset strolls, before returning to the hotel for a couple’s treatment at Anantara Spa.
Oman temperatures can be sweltering in coastal areas, but here in the mountains, it stays cool year-round, making it a luxurious base to explore the culture, history and landscape of this extraordinary corner of the country, just two hours from the city of Muscat.
Rooms at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar start from £300 per night. Visit: anantara.com.

A longstanding favourite for couples and honeymooners is the Maldives, with its impeccable white sands to stroll hand-in-hand along, impossibly turquoise water to swim in, and over-water villas.
Finolhu, set within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, offers a night under the stars, entirely away from anyone else. Located on a long, private sandbank, surrounded by the ocean, the ‘Beach Bubble’ stay is the first of its kind in the Maldives archipelago, where couples can sleep out on the sandbank, the ocean lapping beside them, dozing off with the stars above.
First though, as the sun sets, a private chef will prepare a BBQ on the beach, before couples can wake up in the morning with unobstructed views of the Indian Ocean before enjoying another private beach breakfast.
Alternatively, have dinner on Five Degrees North, a wooden platform in the middle of the resort’s tropical lagoon, located five degrees north of the equator.
Rates from approximately £392 per night in a Lagoon Villa on a bed and breakfast basis. The Beach Bubble is from £710 per night for two. Visit finolhu.com.

In a world where flat-pack furniture and one-size-fits-all solutions have become the norm, more homeowners are seeking spaces that feel truly theirs — places where every shelf, wardrobe and built-in unit contributes to a home’s personality and purpose. That’s where Custom Creations steps in: a family-run bespoke furniture business based in Verwood, Dorset, creating fitted furniture that’s as unique as the people who live with it.

For decades, Custom Creations has been crafting beautiful fitted furniture, from sleek walk-in wardrobes to clever storage solutions for awkward angles. What sets them apart isn’t just the quality of their workmanship, but their commitment to designing around your life. Every project begins with a conversation — not a catalogue. Their designers want to understand how you live, how you grow and how your needs might evolve in the years ahead, ensuring each piece works hard for you now and adapts gracefully into the future.
Current interior trends highlight the importance of maximising space without sacrificing style — especially as home working and multi-functional living become

a fixture of modern life. Bespoke furniture isn’t just a luxury; it’s a solution to everyday challenges. Whether it’s a fitted home office that inspires productivity or a bedroom wardrobe that efficiently uses every centimetre of space, Custom Creations brings thoughtful design into every corner of the home.

“What a brilliant professional helpful company. Just made the whole process easier from start to finish.”

Homes today are more multifunctional than ever before. Rooms that once served a single purpose now need to transition between home office, guest room and family space. Bespoke furniture from Custom Creations answers this shift by creating storage and layouts that are both beautiful and practical. Adjustable shelving, integrated drawers, and custom configurations help spaces evolve as families do. It’s furniture that doesn’t date — it adapts.

Craftsmanship and care, from start to finish
At the heart of Custom Creations is genuine craftsmanship. Their furniture is handcrafted in their Dorset workshop by skilled joiners and fitted by their professional inhouse team, meaning every piece is made to last. Unlike mass-produced alternatives, each item carries a 25-year guarantee, giving homeowners confidence that they’re investing in quality that lasts.

But the craftsmanship isn’t only in the furniture itself — it’s in how the team works with clients. Because Custom Creations is family-run, designers aren’t on commission; their advice is rooted in what’s best for the customer. There’s a genuine sense of partnership throughout the process, from the first free design consultation right through to installation. Clients frequently comment on the professionalism, care and attention to detail that the team brings to every home.

A local business making a big difference Custom Creations’ reach extends across Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and beyond, but their roots remain firmly local. Their Verwood showroom invites visitors to be inspired by an array of finishes and configurations, helping customers visualise the possibilities before any work begins. It’s this blend of local presence and bespoke expertise that has made them a go-to choice for homeowners who want more than off-the-shelf furniture.
From fitted wardrobes and cupboards to bespoke living room units and home office installations, Custom Creations brings together thoughtful design, reliable craftsmanship and genuine customer care. In an era when homes are expected to do more than ever, they offer solutions that are not just stylish, but truly life-enhancing.
If you’re looking to transform your space into something that’s designed around you, Custom Creations is ready to make that vision a reality.
Put your windows in the frame with these expert tips, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
It’s the time of year when we start looking at everything with a whole new outlook, especially with natural daylight playing such a key role. In turn, window accents come into play… whether it’s to switch up your space with a fabulous floral print, block out wintry drafts, or make a real feature of your vista.
“Layering window treatments is one of the simplest ways to take a room from looking simply furnished, to feeling fully finished – beautifully your own, but practical too,” says Chloe Dacosta, design manager at Blinds 2go and Curtains 2go. “Not only does layering around your windows give you greater control over light, privacy, and temperature, but it also adds instant depth, softness, and character to your space.”
Whether you prefer a clean, contemporary look or something more luxurious and dressed, she says layering your window treatments allows you to achieve “a made-to-measure, interior-designed feel without redesigning your entire decor.”
Here’s how to achieve a classic layered look when it comes to your windows…
Start with a practical base layer
Every layered window begins with an anchor, underlines Dacosta, suggesting people opt for a blind as their base layer because it offers “day-to-day practicality without overwhelming the window.”
Ikat Damask Cactus Roman Blind, from £24.25, Blinds 2go; Sanderson Orchid Trail Berry Lime Curtains, from £26.35, Curtains 2go | Blinds 2go/Curtains 2go/PA

“I find roman blinds, roller blinds, shutters, and wooden blinds provide reliable privacy and light control – the best for a base layer – whilst still allowing you to be creative with your look.
“Sheer or light-filtering blinds are ideal for bright rooms where you still want to enjoy natural daylight, while blackout options are perfect for bedrooms.”
Choose a neutral shade if you want your base layer to disappear quietly into the background, she advises; or use a textured or patterned blind to bring subtle interest and complement your layers.
Add softness with curtains
“Once you’ve established your functional foundation, curtains bring the softness and style that really elevate the space beautifully.
“Hanging them slightly wider and higher than the window frame will give the illusion of height and create a more elegant silhouette,” she advises.
With so many options out there, here’s what to think about when selecting your curtains…
Texture: What’s the right texture for your room and your interior scheme?
“Linen keeps things relaxed and fresh; velvet feels glamorous and is very on trend; cotton weaves strike a cosy balance and are perfectly versatile,” notes Dacosta.
ABOVE
Brown Roman Blinds, made to measure, from £39.85, English Blinds | English Blinds/PA
Length: “Floor-skimming panels always look refined, while pooling curtains evoke a luxurious, boutique-hotel atmosphere, though they might not be as appropriate for homes with children and pets.
“Or, in a bedroom, would you prefer short curtains that sit under your sill?”
Colour: Tonal combinations feel calm and cohesive, she suggests, whereas contrasting colours can turn the window into a focal point. “How daring would you like to be with your dressing?”
Curtains don’t have to be heavy: Lightweight drapes can look beautiful layered over a blackout blind, giving you the best of both worlds, outlines Dacosta, and says it’s all about what works for you.
Introduce sheers for soft, diffused light
“Sheers are the secret to that dreamy, layered look so often seen in magazines and show homes,” reveals Dacosta. “Their transparent-like texture diffuses sunlight in the most flattering way, creating a sense of movement and tranquillity.
“The fun part is, you can layer them with blinds, or curtains; or both as they’re so adaptable.”
If you opt for a blind to give you privacy at night, sheer curtains can be added simply for style during the day, she advises.
“Alternatively, you could combine sheer panels with heavier curtains so you can switch between bright and breezy, and warm and cocooned… depending on the time of day.”
WINDOW LAYERING TIPS AND TRICKS…
Play with pattern and colour
“Layering gives you permission to mix pattern, tone, and texture without overwhelming the room.
“A pared-back blind can sit comfortably behind bolder curtains, while patterned blinds work beautifully with plain drapes in complementary shades.”
from

If you’re hesitant to switch it up too much, she suggests keeping everything within the same colour family. “Soft, tonal layers feel sophisticated and are almost impossible to get wrong,” underlines Dacosta.
Consider thermal benefits
Layering isn’t just an aesthetic choice, she highlights. “Two treatments at one window can significantly improve insulation. “Thermal blinds paired with lined curtains help regulate temperature throughout the year – keeping heat in during winter and blocking harsh sunlight in summer.”
“How you layer really depends on your style,” Dacosta says. “And how the room around you is designed.”
To put you on the front foot, here are two of her favourite combinations which pair beautifully…
Oatmeal curtains and cream voile
“These two neutral window dressings work in perfect harmony to create a soft, serene finish,” explains Dacosta.
“I love pairing light colours at the window as it allows natural light to flow into the room, subtly lifting the space during the day. In the evening, drawing both layers adds instant privacy and warmth, making the room feel wonderfully cocooning.”

If your home leans into calming, cosy neutrals, she says a neutral curtain and voile duo will integrate seamlessly into your decor, “while giving your window a gentle yet noticeable upgrade.”
Statement pattern-on-pattern prints
If you enjoy being bold with your decor, Dacosta says a pattern-on-pattern layered look makes a striking statement… and is far more versatile than you might think.
Moreover, if you opt for an bright ikat print juxtaposed against a floral curtain, she loves the way these two designs play off each other, “creating an irresistible cottagecoreinspired effect with plenty of country charm.”
“Don’t be afraid to experiment with prints and colour,” she adds. “You’ll be amazed by the combinations that work beautifully once you start playing. That’s exactly what sample packs are for!”
Dacosta continues: “Layering your treatments isn’t just about dressing a window – it’s about shaping the atmosphere of your home, one thoughtful, beautiful detail at a time.”

At Elegant Loft Services, there is a clear understanding that modern family life is changing. Growing families, grandparents moving in, adult children returning home, blended households, and the continued shift towards working from home all share one thing in common: the need for more space. Rather than facing the cost and disruption of moving, many homeowners are now looking up—discovering the untapped potential already waiting in their loft.

Elegant Loft Services offers a versatile range of loft solutions to suit every lifestyle and budget. From fully habitable, turnkey loft conversions to cost-effective DIY loft packages for hands-on homeowners, as well as uninhabitable loft rooms ideal for occasional use, playrooms or home offices, better living space is made both achievable and affordable.
Every project begins with a free initial survey, where time is taken to understand each family’s needs. A fully costed proposal
is then provided within 24 hours. Clients are also invited to view completed show lofts, offering reassurance through first-hand experience of the company’s workmanship and quality.
To ensure a smooth, worry-free experience, Elegant Loft Services manages the entire process on the client’s behalf, including planning permissions, building regulations, architectural drawings, structural calculations, scaffolding and waste removal. Bathrooms, doors, stair components, tiles and bespoke features can also be sourced through trusted suppliers. As Valentines Day approaches, who needs roses when there are so many other plants of the heart to choose from?
The season of romance is here, but if you’re yawning at the thought – and cost – of red roses, there’s a mass of other plants which spell love for both outdoor gardeners and houseplant lovers.
Take a look at some of the plants with heartshaped leaves and flowers which can last a lot longer than a dozen red roses.

STRING OF HEARTS (CEROPEGIA WOODII)
Native to South Africa and Zimbabwe, this trailing succulent houseplant produces thin wiry stems carrying heart-shaped grey leaves with pinkish undersides. It’s ideal for trailing down off shelving or a hanging pot, maybe alongside other trailers, such as string of pearls and string of dolphins.

GROWING TIPS: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings and never let the roots sit in water or you’ll kill the plant. If the leaves start to yellow, cut off the damaged foliage and don’t water until the soil is really dry. Feed with a houseplant fertiliser twice a year and keep the plant in a light, bright spot out of direct sunlight, turning it from time to time so all the stems get sufficient light.
This beautiful, dainty-looking heart-filled perennial, also known as Lamprocapnos spectabilis (reclassified from dicentra), produces arching stems hung with heartshaped flowers in late spring and early summer. Growing to around 90cm, they

look beautiful in semi shade as each stem produces lines of these little romantic blooms. For those who aren’t fans of pink or red, there are also white varieties (‘Alba’), all of which look beautiful with low-lying plants such as saxifrages and hellebores.
GROWING TIPS: They like cool, moist, sheltered situations, but will also do well in a sunny border. However, keeping them out of the heat of the day and making sure the soil is moist are likely to extend their flowering period. They will form clumps which will last for years and don’t like to be moved.
Also known as the sweetheart plant, thanks to its heart-shaped fleshy succulent leaves, you can pick up this popular houseplant in all its romantic glory at most garden centres, where a single heart-shaped leaf cutting will form the stand-alone attraction.
A native of Thailand and south China, it can, given the right conditions, fill pots with its thick, leathery love heart leaves. However, be aware that if you buy one which is just a heart-shaped leaf planted in a pot, most won’t grow into a full plant because they are not true stem cuttings. If you want one that’s going to grow properly you’ll need to find a plant with a properly rooted stem and visible other leaves. Mature plants can produce star-shaped cream and red flowers.

GROWING TIPS: Never over-water this succulent. Only water it when the soil feels really dry and don’t water the leaves, only the soil. Keep it in a light position out of direct sunlight and don’t put it near radiators or in draughty spots. And if you want to have more chance of it lasting, buy a more mature plant.

Native to South America and the Caribbean, and also known as the flamingo flower, this tropical-looking houseplant’s heartshaped red waxy flowers (also known as spathes) and central yellow or cream spikes are instantly recognisable and add a huge splash of colour to any indoor area. You can also find pink, orange and white varieties.
GROWING TIPS: They come from warm, humid parts of the world so try to imitate those conditions. Place them in a warm, bright spot out of direct sunlight in fastdraining peat-free acidic soil and water them with rainwater, preferably at room temperature, allowing the top third of the soil to dry out between waterings. ABOVE

Don’t water them with cold tap water or you will shock them. To maintain humidity, they may be best off in a bathroom, or alternatively mist the leaves regularly.
A great alternative to a Valentines bouquet, the dainty flowers – in shades of red, pink and white – atop pretty green and grey heart-shaped leaves should last longer than many other floral gifts, maybe even up to six weeks.
GROWING TIPS: Keep it cool if you want it to survive. It won’t thank you being put near a radiator. If frost isn’t forecast, you could even put it in its pot on a covered porch or in an unheated conservatory or greenhouse. Again, don’t overwater, waiting until the pot has partially dried out, and water from below, putting the pot into a shallow bowl of water and letting the soil absorb the water, but make sure you drain the pot thoroughly after watering.

For thousands of homeowners, solar panels represent progress — lower energy bills, a reduced carbon footprint, and greater independence from volatile energy prices. But while solar power is often sold as a “fit and forget” solution, the reality is far more complex. Behind every solar array is a small power station working day after day, exposed to wind, rain, heat and cold. Without proper oversight, that power station can quietly become a risk rather than an asset.

This is where Tincleton Solar Systems plays a vital role for homeowners across the UK.
Solar installations have increased rapidly in recent years, but inspections and maintenance have not always kept pace. Industry data shows that fires involving solar systems are rising faster than the rate of new installations, with faulty wiring,
degraded connectors and poor original workmanship frequently identified as the cause. In real terms, that means UK fire services are now responding to incidents involving solar systems roughly every couple of days. For homeowners, that is a sobering statistic.
Many of these problems are invisible from the ground. Cables degrade slowly under UV exposure. Fixings loosen over time. Water ingress can compromise electrical components long before there are any obvious warning signs. Because the system continues to generate electricity, homeowners often assume everything is fine — until something goes wrong.
Tincleton Solar Systems specialises in identifying these hidden issues before they escalate. Their professional solar system surveys are designed to give homeowners a clear, independent

assessment of their installation. This isn’t just a visual check. A full survey examines roof integrity, mounting systems, wiring, inverters and overall electrical safety, producing a detailed engineering report that highlights risks, performance issues and recommended actions.

The importance of this level of scrutiny goes beyond safety alone. Home insurance providers are increasingly asking questions about solar installations. If a system was poorly installed, modified without certification, or left unmaintained for years, it can create complications when making a claim. In some cases, homeowners have discovered — too late — that their insurance cover was compromised due to non-

compliant solar equipment. A professional inspection helps protect against that risk by providing documented evidence that the system has been checked and assessed.
There is also the question of performance. A solar array that isn’t operating efficiently may still be producing power, but not as much as it should. Loose connections, shading issues, or failing components can quietly erode the financial return homeowners expect from their investment. By identifying faults early, inspections can extend the lifespan of equipment and help homeowners recover lost efficiency over time.
Perhaps most importantly, a solar survey delivers peace of mind. In an era of unpredictable weather, rising energy costs
and increasing electrical demand, knowing that your solar system is safe, compliant and working as intended is invaluable. It transforms solar panels from a potential liability into a well-managed, long-term asset.
Tincleton Solar Systems approaches solar with the mindset that homeowners deserve clarity, honesty and protection. Whether the system was installed recently, inherited when buying a property, or fitted many years ago, a professional survey provides answers to the most important questions: Is it safe? Is it compliant? Is it performing properly?
For homeowners who value their property, their safety and their investment, solar inspection is no longer optional. It is a smart, preventative step that can save thousands of pounds — and countless worries — in the years ahead.

Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.
Audi will celebrate a very special anniversary next year: 50 years of the fivecylinder engine. First introduced in 1976 in the second-generation Audi 100, currently the 2.5 TFSI in the Audi RS 3 continues the great tradition of five-cylinder engines. Audi’s five-cylinder engines have cult status and are deeply rooted in the Audi DNA.

The first five-cylinder engine powered the Audi 100 (C2) in 1976. The four-cylinder engines of the time were not sufficient for the plans and Audi engineers therefore discussed using inline five-cylinder and sixcylinder engines in the early 1970s. The latter were ruled out due to space constraints and the unfavorable weight distribution. As a result, they opted for the inline five-cylinder engine, with a displacement of 2,144 cc, delivered 100 kW (136 PS). A modern fuel injection system increased efficiency and power delivery. Deliveries of the Audi 100 5E began in March 1977.

Audi launched its first diesel version back in 1978: a naturally aspirated diesel with a displacement of two litres and 51 kW (70 PS). One year later, the first five-cylinder gasoline engine with turbocharging made its debut – another pioneering achievement by Audi. With 125 kW (170 PS) and 265 Nm of torque, it powered the new top model, the Audi 200 5T.
The five-cylinder gasoline engine in the original 1980 Audi quattro reached even greater heights. Featuring turbocharging, intercooling, and permanent all-wheel drive, it formed a powerful technology package for both racing and the road. At the start of sales, it had a power output of 147 kW (200 PS). After Audi secured the World Rally Championship title in 1982 with this car Audi introduced the Sport quattro powered by a newly developed four-valve,
five-cylinder light-alloy engine with 225 kW (306 PS). This made the Sport quattro the most powerful car ever offered by a German company for use on public roads up to that time.
Since 2021, the Audi RS 3 has been equipped with a modified version of the five-cylinder 2.5 TFSI, which is more powerful than ever before. It enables the compact sports car to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds.
The five-cylinder’s throaty sound makes for a highly evocative driving experience. Its signature sound is created by the odd number of cylinders and the unique firing sequence 1-2-4-5-3, which alternates between cylinder pairs adjacent to each other and further away that gives the 2.5 TFSI a very distinctive note.

There are some cars, when they’re due on my driveway, that herald a certain expectation, driveability, comfort and premium style. Audi is one such brand and in their latest Q5 there’s much to like but does it meet those expectations?
Q5 comes in SUV and Sportback along with similarly named models but with e-hybrid plug-in power and there’s the SQ5 performance version. Prices start from £53,101 for the lead-in SUV model with mild-hybrid power whether you choose the 2.0-litre petrol or diesel.
My test car was the £63,060 Launch Edition powered by the 204PS 2.0-litre TDI engine and comes as standard with adaptive air suspension (usually a £1725 option), matrix LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, head up display, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, power seats, auto dimming rear view mirrors, wireless phone charging, heated, powered and folding door mirrors, keyless entry and start and a Bang and Olufsen sound system.
The interior is the usual efficient Audi affair with an impressive curved OLED display screen but sadly lacking in buttons! However, it’s a system that works well and as ever with such things familiarity makes life easier.
With quattro all-wheel-drive along with other drive modes, a 7-speed automatic gearbox and a torquey 204PS diesels engine with 48-volt mild hybrid power unit the Q5 is a refined and smooth performer. With the benchmark 62mph passed in a whisker under 7.5 seconds, and 44mpg in combined driving it’s also an efficient performer too.

The ride quality is excellent, no mean feat given the state of the roads here in the UK, and thanks to extremely comfortable sports seats long journeys are completed in a very relaxing environment. Passengers are treated to plenty of legroom both front and rear, there’s admirable amounts of space for luggage, not always a given for an SUV, and unlike the Sportback the SUV has a less streamlined roofline to provide a more versatile and practical load area.
Does the Q5 meet those expectations mentioned at the start of this piece? In many respects it certainly does, the way it drives is pure premium, likewise the technology, but the interior is rather plain and ordinary, not helped by the overly dark tones of black and grey from the headlining to the seats, door cards and dashboard. It just doesn’t feel special enough, as an Audi should feel. Subjective comments apart for those who like the dark then the Q5 is a practical, comfortable and very efficient choice.
It’s hard to believe that just over 10 years ago Kia launched its first useable EV, the Kia Soul had a range of around 130 miles and only sold a small number through a limited number of Kia dealers. A decade later and Kia is one of the foremost providers of EVs, and the number you see on the roads proves just how popular they have become with eco minded motorists.

The Korean car maker’s style has also become one of the most distinctive on the road and no matter which side of the marmite fence you stand they are a welcome sight amongst a motoring sea of lookalikes.
The EV3 is arguably one of their more conventional looking models, although there are still elements of Kia’s distinctive

styling pen. It’s effectively a replacement of the aforementioned Soul and its cubic looks hide a particularly specious interior.
A three trim model line-up – Air, GT-Line and GT-Line S – makes things simple and there is a standard range 58kwh battery and a longer range 81kwh version. Standard fare across all models includes auto lights and wipers, powered heated and folding door mirrors, heated front seats and steering wheel, air conditioning and keyless entry and start.
Priced from £33,005 the standard range Air model will carry you for around 270 miles, although in real world driving probably 200-220 miles. Although some complain about the manufacturer stated range figures with EVs, it’s really no different to the MPG figures with ICE cars, it’s all ideal world testing.

An additional £3,000 gets you the larger 81kwh Air model which adds a likely 100 additional miles to your range and standard equipment remains unchanged from the lead-in model. In addition to the usual rear boot, you get a smaller but still useful ‘frunk’ and occupants fare well inside the EV3 with very decent space and a nice airy feel to the interior.

On the road the EV3 is smooth, refined and handles the appallingly bad road surfaces that seem to populate most of the country extremely well. It will never be a performance machine but still offers the instant acceleration that is beloved by EV drivers. It is extremely useful for nipping past slower moving traffic, where in an ICE car you would think twice before attempting the same manoeuvre.
As you would expect of Kia the build quality is excellent and the EV3 is probably one of most practical and useable EVs out there at the moment. There are cheaper EVs but the EV3 does, subject to the vagaries and expense of public charging, offer a more practical option for longer journeys.
You may have noticed that designers of EVs seem to be competing to produce the most striking, others may choose a different word, design possible to make their cars stand out in the ever-increasing automotive EV crowd. Sometimes though the simple option proves the most striking, and so it is with Hyundai’s Ioniq 5.
It is probably the most normal looking EV and could easily pass for an ICE car at first glance, with the chunky appearance of a 5-door hatchback. Inside offers lots of space and practicality and has the promise of a half-decent range too.

Priced from £39,995 for the 170PS Advance 63kwh model there are two 84kwh versions developing 228PS and a 325PS that comes with all-wheel-drive. Five trim levels include a sporty N-Line and N-Line S with standard equipment across the line-up including navigation, dual-zone climate, auto lights and wipers, Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, smart cruise control, keyless entry and start, powered, heated and folding door mirrors plus heated front seats and steering wheel.
On the road the Ioniq 5 has all the usual smoothness and power you would expect from a top-class EV, with the 84kwh 228PS model passing the benchmark 62mph in just 7.5 seconds and a potential range of 354 miles. In reality I would say it’ll be more like 290-300 miles in real world driving. Still a usefully decent range.

In 63kwh 170PS form it’s a second longer to 62 mph and a real-world range in the region of 220 miles. The ride quality is excellent and although you wouldn’t want to blast across twisting country roads it’s more than capable.

Inside there are numerous, clever details that maximise the already spacious layout from a sliding centre console and sliding rear seats to doors that open wide and make access and egress much easier. You even get a useable ‘frunk’ or small luggage area at the front of the car on the twowheel-drive models, it’s quite a bit smaller on the all-wheel-drive. As ever these days touchscreen rules as far as most of the functions are concerned although there are some physical buttons.
If you’re someone who has so far not been tempted down the EV route, but would like to be, then I don’t think you would be disappointed with the Ioniq 5. It’s not too left-field style-wise and for an EV, and what it offers, is sensibly priced. Add impressive interior space, refinement and quality, plus instant EV power and, if you charge largely at home, cheaper running costs. There’s little not to like!

Deliciously Ella is back with a new plant-based cookbook designed to make healthy weeknight dinners a doddle.
Barely have time to moan about how little time you have? You know you really are short on it. Amidst the manic work deadlines, school pick-up, the big shop and keeping the dog alive, it’s easy to forget to feed yourself. Well, properly, at least.
So if you’ve eaten too many fish finger sandwiches, ready meals and packets of crisps stood at the kitchen counter, and wish you had the wherewithal to actually cook something good for you, now might be the moment.
Thankfully, you don’t have to do it alone. Ella Mills, aka Deliciously Ella, has a new cookbook out, Quick Wins: Healthy Cooking For Busy Lives, written to make mealtimes swifter, easier and more nutritious. “I’d never been someone who’d mapped out what I was going to cook for the week, but then suddenly, you get home and it’s like, ‘What’s for dinner?’ and it’s like, ‘I don’t know, I don’t have the headspace to figure out what’s for dinner’,” she says, remembering a couple of years ago when her business was crazy busy and she’d get home and have herself, her husband Matthew Mills (son of the late politician Tessa Jowell) and their daughters, Skye and May, to feed, and they were all getting sick of the same meals on rotation. “I really found myself in that pattern, and it’s not that you don’t have 20 minutes to make stuff – I did have 20 minutes – but your

mental load is so high that by the time it’s 7.30pm, you’re just like, ‘Toast!’”
The Rugby-born food entrepreneur’s answer was to start “gently mapping” out dinner ideas for the week ahead and doing some Sunday batch cooking. “Life was just suddenly so much easier. It was just one thing I didn’t need to worry about. I found we were eating so much more variety. There was just an ease in getting home being like, ‘Right, tonight, we’re making
fancy beans, and I have the ingredients. I know what I’m going to do. It’s going to take me 15 minutes’,” she says. “Or, ‘We’re going to do a tray bake with rice and tofu, fajita style, with garlic yogurt’. Everything goes on the tray, it goes in the pan, pop it together, we’re winning.”
The book is not a rigid meal planner though, instead it’s a rough framework to help you answer the “annoying, age-old question of, ‘What’s for dinner?’” in a way that gives you variety, flexibility, and frees up precious brain space. Expect one-pan dinners, storecupboard meals that just require picking one fresh ingredient up on the way home from work, and dishes you can batch cook, freeze and transform into something new (“Like stews into chunky soups”). “I don’t want lots of washing up. I don’t want lots of chaos on a Tuesday night after school clubs, after pick up, I just want something quite seamless, that’s delicious, nutritious and quite easy to do,” says Mills, 34.
Mills began writing recipes in 2012 in an effort to improve her health after struggling with chronic health issues that left her fatigued, in pain and with digestive issues. Her Deliciously Ella blog became a pioneer of the plant-based ‘clean eating’ movement, which has since received backlash for being highly restrictive, obsessive and for contributing to disordered eating. Looking back – Mills has

written numerous cookbooks, hosts The Wellness Scoop podcast and is probably the reason you have a spiralizer sitting at the back of your kitchen cupboard – she says it’s “extraordinary” how the food landscape has changed since her debut cookbook in 2015.
“I was here saying we need to eat more real food, more whole foods, more plants. We shouldn’t eat so many additives and preservatives. And people were like, ‘Stop telling me what to do, it’s so frustrating!’ And I understand there was an element of a young woman telling people that, it was maybe a little frustrating, but I am really excited how much the world has changed,” she says, nodding to how much more aware we are of what we put in our bodies.
However, “50% of calories come from ultra processed foods, up to 80% for one in five people, yet only one in five people manage to get their five a day,” she says, warning we still have a long way to go. “In Britain, we’re eating fewer vegetables than at any time in the last 50 years. But then likewise, we have a multi-trillion dollar wellness industry, yet our health is getting worse.”
“We’re at this tipping point where we’ve got to move wellness away from powders and gadgets and gizmos, and expensive, complicated things, back into, ‘What are the little wins I can have in my day-to-day life?’ We need to not be terrified of one bite of ultra processed food, but empowered to be like, ‘I do need to reduce that, and I do need to eat more plants,’” she muses.
She’s all for starting small, not totally overhauling your entire diet. Grab a bag
of mixed seeds and nuts from Tesco and sprinkle it on your porridge or salad or soup. “The goal is to get to about 30 plants a week. But if the goal this week is to just increase it by three or four, that’s so much better than trying to change everything,” she recommends. “With the noise and overwhelm of people’s lives, coupled with the food landscape we live in, where the vast majority of what’s sold is UPFs, it’s really, really difficult. Therefore, moving 1% closer to your goal every day will get you miles closer to where you want to be.”
For the majority of people “it’s not about good willpower or bad willpower. It’s just that life is too busy”. “If you’ve had a bad night’s sleep, you’re proven to crave sugar. Life will happen,” she says. “Have gentle foundations that can ebb and flow, as opposed to crazy diet commitments where you’re on a bandwagon or off it.” That way, you might find a balance that works for you.

INGREDIENTS
4 aubergines
Olive oil
3 garlic cloves, crushed or minced
1tsp ground cumin
2 onions, finely chopped
1 × 400g tin of beluga (or green) lentils, drained and rinsed
1tbsp tomato purée
1tbsp almond butter
500g passata
Juice of ½ lemon
2tsp white miso paste (optional)
2tsp maple syrup
Sea salt and black pepper
Pasta or grains, to serve

INGREDIENTS
2/3 cabbage, thinly sliced
½tsp smoked paprika
Pinch of dried red chilli flakes
Olive oil
4 small wholemeal tortillas (or use 2 large ones)
1 lime, halved
1-2 avocados, thinly sliced
2 servings of pulled miso aubergine ragu (above)
Handful of coriander (about 20g) roughly chopped
Sea salt
Plain yoghurt, to serve (optional)
SERVES 4
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan. Pierce the aubergines all over with a knife to stop them from bursting and place in a deep baking tray. Roast for 40 to 45 minutes, turning halfway, until softened and collapsed.
2. Meanwhile, warm two tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan set over a medium-low heat. Add the garlic and cumin and cook for two to three minutes, until fragrant. Add the onion, along with a pinch of salt and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, until golden.
3. Stir in the lentils, tomato purée, almond butter, passata, lemon juice, miso and maple syrup. Half fill the empty passata jar with water and add this too. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until glossy and thickened. Turn the heat right down, cover with a lid and leave to simmer very gently until the aubergines are ready.
4. Let the aubergines cool slightly then carefully cut in half and use a fork to scrape out the soft, silky flesh – it should melt away from the skin. Stir into the sauce and season to taste.
5. Serve half the ragu with your favourite pasta or grain and keep the other half for later in the week to make tortillas.
TO STORE: Store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to five days or store in the freezer for up to three months.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN: Stir in a spoonful of tahini for extra richness or add a sprinkling of dried red chilli flakes for a little heat. If you’re serving it with rice, a dollop of yoghurt makes a delicious addition, as does basil.
2
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan. On a large baking tray, toss together the cabbage, paprika, chilli flakes, a tablespoon of olive oil and a generous pinch of salt and spread out in a single layer.
2. Roast for 20 minutes, stirring halfway, until crisp and lightly charred.
3. Meanwhile, warm the tortillas in a dry pan or in the oven for two to three minutes. Squeeze the juice from half of the lime over the avocado.
4. To assemble the tortillas, spoon a generous amount of ragu on to each tortilla, then pile on some crispy cabbage, avocado, coriander and a spoonful of yoghurt (if using). Squeeze over a little lime juice and serve straightaway.

INGREDIENTS
Olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
250g mixed mushrooms (such as, chestnut and shiitake), sliced
3 garlic cloves, crushed or sliced
100g orzo
1tsp dried thyme
1 × 400g tin of white beans, drained and rinsed
300ml hot vegetable stock
100ml oat or almond milk (unsweetened)
2tsp white miso paste
1 large handful of baby spinach (about 50g), roughly chopped
Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon
Sea salt and black pepper
No risotto rice in the cupboard? No problem.
1. Heat one to two tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan set over a medium heat. Add the onion with a generous pinch of salt and cook for five minutes, until softened.
2. Add the mushrooms and cook for another eight to 10 minutes until golden. Stir in the garlic for the final one minute.
3. Stir in the orzo and thyme, letting them toast for a minute, then add the beans and vegetable stock. Simmer for seven to 10 minutes (with the lid off), stirring occasionally, until the orzo is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
4. Add the milk, miso, spinach and lemon zest and juice, and let it cook for a final three to five minutes, stirring occasionally, until the spinach has wilted and the dish feels thick and creamy. Season to taste (I like lots of pepper in this recipe), then serve and enjoy!
Make it your own: Add toasted walnuts for crunch or swap spinach for cavolo nero or kale. Add a handful of rocket on the top for extra greens. Add nutritional yeast at the end (with the lemon) for extra richness, or Parmesan if you’re not plant-based.

INGREDIENTS
Olive oil
2 carrots, finely chopped
1 onion, finely chopped
3 celery stalks, finely chopped
1 × 400g tin of chickpeas, drained
1 × 400g tin of cherry tomatoes
750ml hot vegetable stock
60g red lentils, rinsed
2tbsp tahini
½ bunch of flat-leaf parsley (about 15g), roughly chopped
Sea salt and black pepper
Extra virgin olive oil, to finish
Optional speedy croutons:
2 slices of sourdough
1 garlic clove
Soup season is upon us. “This one-pan soup is such a lifesaver – hearty, comforting, and packed with protein from the lentils and chickpeas,” says Ella.
1. Warm one tablespoon of olive oil in a large saucepan set over a medium heat. Add the carrots, onion and celery, and cook for five minutes until just softened.
2. Tip the chickpeas, cherry tomatoes, stock and lentils into the pan, add a generous pinch of salt and pepper and bring to the boil.
3. Once the liquid is boiling, turn the heat down to a simmer and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the carrots are soft and the lentils are cooked.
4. To make the croutons (if using), toast the bread, then rub the garlic clove on each side and cut into bitesized pieces.
5. Remove the pan from the heat, then stir in the tahini, parsley and season to taste.
6. If you’ve made croutons, stir them through the soup or scatter over the top. To serve, divide into bowls and finish with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

After more than a decade building brands, bars and credibility on the White Isle, Jody Hall is back on the South Coast — bringing real Ibiza energy, hard-earned lessons and a legacy project with his son.
You spent 11 years living in Ibiza. That’s not a holiday — that’s a life. What drew you there in the first place?
Ibiza felt like possibility. It wasn’t about escaping anything — it was about building something meaningful. The island has a way of sharpening you. You either graft or you don’t last. From the start, it was clear this was a long game.

So Ibiza became more than just a backdrop — it became a foundation?
Exactly. Ibiza was my classroom. I worked my way into becoming a trusted filmmaker and videographer for some of the island’s biggest brands — bars, nightclubs, luxury villas, superyachts, restaurants. Nothing was handed to me. I earned every bit of trust and every opportunity.

You didn’t just document the scene — you became part of it.
I did. I owned a pirate-style bar called The Rum Runner for three years. Opening a bar in Ibiza is tough at the best of times. Opening one in 2020, during Covid, added a whole new level of pressure.
What was that experience really like?
Relentless. Constant rule changes, fines for minor things, pressure from every angle. Some of it was Covid chaos, some politics, some just the reality of operating on a tightly regulated island. But we survived three full seasons. I learned more running that bar than any course could ever teach.
Did that change your relationship with Ibiza?
A little. I’ll always love the island, but after years of non-stop seasons, the shine naturally softens. What surprised me most was how coming back to Bournemouth reignited my excitement.
Because now you’re building something closer to home?
Yes — with real purpose. Bournemouth once had a strong nightlife identity. Watching it fade from afar was frustrating, especially seeing so many events labelled “Ibiza-inspired” that didn’t actually reflect the island.
What do you mean by that?
There’s been a lot of marketing without authenticity. Line-ups branded as Ibiza, but when you look closer, many of the artists have never played there, never lived it, never been residents. The name gets used, but the culture gets lost.
And your aim is to change that?
Completely. We’re bringing real Ibiza residents — artists with genuine roots on the island. Because I’ve spent years building real friendships, not just contacts, I can bring major Ibiza talent to Bournemouth at a fraction of the usual cost. That trust matters.
You’re building this alongside your son, Connor. That feels important.
It really is. Connor’s grown up around this world — music, people, creativity. He even attended a Spanish school for a while, which gave him confidence and maturity beyond his years. Ibiza teaches life skills quickly, and he absorbed that naturally.
Is there a standout father-son memory from Ibiza?
One moment beats everything. I took him to his first Stormzy concert when he was ten. It was technically an over-18s event, but we managed to watch from the VIP balcony. Seeing his face light up — that topped any party, any success, anything I achieved out there.
And now the journey comes full circle?
Yes. Connor and I are creating a new nightlife concept together, aimed at a mature over-30s crowd — people who value great music, atmosphere and connection, without chaos or gimmicks. This is Ibiza energy with a Bournemouth heart, done properly.

What should Bournemouth expect?
Authenticity. Quality. Real culture. I’m bringing back everything I learned — the wins, the mistakes, the graft — and building something special with my son by my side. This isn’t nostalgia. It’s a new chapter.

When can Bournemouth experience it for the first time?
We’re excited to announce Mi Amor, taking place on Valentine’s Saturday, 14th February, at Eden in the heart of Bournemouth.
We have plenty of surprises in store. Our DJ is flying in from Ibiza, where they hold a residency and have played at iconic venues such as Café Mambo, Eden, Bam-Bu-Ku, and Ibiza Rocks. The night will also feature a live saxophone player, confetti cannons, and a special offer where all cocktails throughout the night will be just £10 each.
We can’t wait to bring the Ibiza experience back home to Bournemouth, starting with
our opening night on the 14th. Mi Amor will then continue on a monthly basis, moving to fortnightly events over the summer. We’ll also be hosting additional events, including deck nights and daytime over-30s parties.
Expect the unexpected — we have plenty more surprises to come.
