Soft, graceful and easy on the eye, the background behind Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2026, Cloud Dancer, is about providing a sense of calm – and cited as a “perfect blank slate” in the worlds of interiors, fashion and design. Described as a “billowy, balanced white imbued with a feeling of serenity,” experts at the colour institute describe Cloud Dancer as a “symbol of calming influence in a frenetic society rediscovering the value of measured consideration and quiet reflection.” Similar to a blank canvas, Jane Boddy, creative director of Pantone Colour Institute says one of the key strengths of Pantone 11-4201 is its versatility. “It can be used to make a big statement or to create a more understated, calming environment,” highlights Boddy. “Unlike older approaches to all white interiors, which often felt stark or overly pure, the focus now is on softness – that’s why a soft neutral white works so well.” It’s important to build texture into it, too, underlines Boddy. “Think of an interior that layers soft clays, textured walls, natural cottons, pulled concrete or warm woods. The interest comes from the materials, all working within one gentle colour family,” she explains. “The shade also works beautifully on a single standout piece. “You can imagine a large comfortable sofa in this shade, something you can sink into and feel held by,” suggests Boddy. “Even as one item in a space, it delivers the same sense of calm and comfort you would get from an entire interior done in this colour.”

The Steps Musical Playing at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, 20 – 24 January With 22 million record sales and 500 million streams under their collective belts, Steps are the UK’s most successful mixed-gender band ever. Since coming to fame in 1997 with 5,6,7,8, Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee have notched up 14 top five singles and four number one albums and have sold out arenas across 11 tours. All of which begs the question: Why has it taken so long for a Steps musical to reach the stage? Turns out they’ve been biding their time, waiting for the dovetailing of the perfect story with the right creative team. “And we feel that this is exactly the right time for Here & Now,” says Lisa of a show that the band is co-producing with ROYO and Pete Waterman - the producer who once famously compared Steps to being like ABBA on speed and who helped launched their career with one smash hit after another.

First premiering at The Alexandria, Birmingham, for a limited engagement last year and now heading out on a major UK And Ireland tour, the musical is written by Shaun Kitchener, directed by Rachel Kavanaugh and choreographed by Matt Cole. “So we’ve got the dream team,” Lisa continues. “We’ve all been talking and dreaming about this for around ten years but we haven’t rushed the process. It’s taken time to find all the right components.” Claire shares Lisa’s enthusiasm for what she promises will be “a heartwarming night of humour and hilarity”. And it’s true to the Steps brand, with the singer adding: “You can expect exactly what’d expect from a Steps concert - coming away from it feeling like you’ve seen an amazing show, have been uplifted and have had that element of escapism for a couple of hours. It’s really important for us that people leave the theatre feeling like they’ve been moved by it, that it’s given them a really good laugh and that they’ve been able to sing along at the top of their voices at the end.”

Like her bandmates, Faye has done her fair share of musical theatre. “And my favourite shows to be in have always been the ones where the music has lifted me and I’ve been standing at the side of the stage, watching the other performers do their scenes before I go back on. I just think whoever appears in this show is going to be living their best lives.” Having celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2022 with a sold-out summer tour, Steps also went to number one that year with their Platinum Collection - making them one of only four groups (ABBA, Rolling Stones and Stereophonics are the others) in UK history to notch up chart-topping albums across four decades. They have always been about giving people a good time and Here & Now fits perfectly within that ethos. “Everybody needs escapism in their life at some point and that’s what we’re bringing with this musical,” Lee says. “As we’ve always said from day one with Steps, no matter what’s going on in your life you can come to one of our shows, put it all aside for two hours and have a great time. If we manage that with the musical too then we’ve done our job.” With that in mind, they’re putting making new records and touring on hold for a while so they can channel their time and energy into this production. “We want to give it the best chance that it can have and be involved with it as much as we can,” Claire explains. “If our attention was taken away with us making new music or going on tour then I think we’d be doing the musical a disservice. We’re completely focused on making this a fantastic night out.” And as Lisa reiterates, they’ve got the dream team behind them. “Everybody’s so excited and so happy to be on board,” she beams, “and they’ve told us that they’ve turned down other things to work with us, which is mind-blowing. They all really want to be part of this new journey for Steps.” With its feel-good story, hit-packed soundtrack and steptacular production values, Here & Now looks set to be the ultimate night of escapism for Steps fans and musical theatre lovers alike. Spicy salmon and butternut squash traybake SERVES 2

INGREDIENTS

½ onion, sliced into wedges

Reformer Pilates, HYROX and padel ruled the fitness space and our Instagram feeds this year, however a fresh wave of workout trends are on the horizon. We spoke to an array of fitness experts who shared their predictions on which activities are set to surge in popularity next year.

TR AIL RU N N IN G If you are looking for an activity to boost your cardiovascular health while immersing yourself in the UK’s glorious natural landscapes, trail running might be for you. “We’ve seen a huge rise in road running and an explosion in run clubs this year, but I think trail running is going to be much bigger in 2026,” says personal trainer and running, strength and conditioning coach Eryn Barber.

TRIATH LO N S AN D AQ UATH LO N S “Triathlons, which have previously been seen as a higher level recreational sport, have become hugely popular with the general population,” says Barber. “I have noticed that a lot of people are also doing aquathlons (swim then run) which takes out the cycling element out of which can be expensive, so is seen as more accessible in terms of cost. “Also, triathlons and aquathlons involve open-water swimming and so many people have been really getting into cold water plunges and cold water swimming for health and wellness reasons.”

“I know that there’s also a push to try and get trail running into the Olympics, so I think that in itself will bring trail running to light a bit more and will increase its popularity.” Lots of run clubs around the UK offer trail running sessions. “I have recently seen quite a lot of the city run clubs do days out trail running,” says Barber, who is also the marketing and partnerships manager at personal training course provider The Fitness Group. “Going in a group is a good idea as it’s safer and it helps you get to know what the routes and the terrain are like.”

H OT YO GA AN D PIL ATES Lots of people enjoy the aftermath of sweating in a sauna, but did you know that you can experience similar benefits in a hot yoga or Pilates class? “I have seen lots of hot Pilates studios popping up around Manchester and I think the popularity of this is going to increase in 2026,” says Barber. “Pilates and yoga are generally considered low-impact exercises, so adding that element of heat increases the heart rate, sweat and feeling of working out more.” Nick Higgins, co-founder and head of teaching at Hotpod Yoga, agrees and says hot yoga classes attract a range of demographics. “Our classes attract people in their late teens all the way up to people in their late 60s for all sorts of reasons,” says Higgins. “From a physical standpoint, I think a lot of younger individuals use it as a recovery tool to counter hard-impact activities, like running for example, and are doing as it helps release the built-up tension in the body. It also helps people stay limber and is very therapeutic from a mental health perspective. “I think there will be lots more hybrids of different physical exercise happening in heated environments and I think that’s a great thing.” The

Miss Saigon Playing at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, 27 January – 7 February

It’s over 35 years since the legendary musical Miss Saigon had its world premiere at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London’s West End. The Olivier and Tony Awardwinning show has remained an enduring favourite with audiences ever since, seen by more than 38 million people worldwide. But this major new production touring the UK and Ireland marks an exciting, fresh chapter: it’s a brand-new invention of Miss Saigon, giving audiences a different experience of the timeless tale, and it is coming to British venues that it has never been able to visit before. That combination proved an irresistible draw for the show’s original producer, Cameron Mackintosh, who has put together a new creative team with his fellow producer, Michael Harrison. The pair have joined forces with director Jean-Pierre van der Spuy, who previously directed Cameron’s production of Miss Saigon (originally directed by Laurence Connor) for the Australian Opera, to create a version of the musical that will be able to play different-sized theatres across the country, whilst still delivering the show’s epic drama and

As well as demonstrating that Miss Saigon could work on a different scale, a recent production in Sheffield included some thoughtful revisions to the text – a constructive process that is continuing with this new production. “I knew the show needed a new life,” says Mackintosh, “so I was very happy when Rob Hastie, who was Artistic Director of Sheffield at the time, asked for some lyrical changes for his production, which we collaborated on and the changes worked very well.” He and van der Spuy have added several more for this production.

Edwards was interested in placing the action in the real location, “making sure you can feel the heat, that you can almost touch and smell and sense that country.” Scenically the starting point was the concrete 1960s architecture so prevalent at the time, especially in the still-standing presidential palace featured so pivotally in the Fall of Saigon. Edwards is keen that his costumes feel periodappropriate, but without tripping up modern audiences. “The 1970s is one of those costume eras where, if you get it wrong on stage, it looks really, really wrong!” He’s also sensitive, as the whole team are, to portraying and costuming the female characters in a way that is true to this world but “feels appropriate for this generation of audiences and for the actors on stage as well.” Miss Saigon, notes Mackintosh, was a pioneering West End musical: “It is without doubt the biggest musical ever to feature Asian talent on this scale and a rare one that dealt with contemporary true events rather than period fiction.” Since its premiere, it has enjoyed enormous continual success in Asian countries too – it’s regularly performed in Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Singapore. That is a testament to its authenticity, argues Mackintosh: “It is their story. They possess it. They don’t consider it just another famous musical.”

This new British tour features Filipino-Australian star Seann Miley Moore reprising the role of the Engineer (which they previously played in the Australian Opera production in 2023), plus the recent Brit School graduate Julianne Pundan making her professional debut as Kim, with 17-year-old Bea Ward playing the role at certain performances. Mackintosh says of the new cast: “It’s terribly exciting what they bring to it. When I first met Seann, we had a conversation about their point of view on the material and what it means to their generation.” Van der Spuy adds: “It’s a very visceral show. It’s important that the cast feel they own the piece. I can’t own a character like the Engineer or Kim: I don’t have the lived experience. Having the right actors who can tap into aspects of their culture and heritage makes this such a rewarding process – and in 2025, it feels like there’s an even greater opportunity to do that.” Mackintosh reveals he didn’t plan to mount this tour exactly 50 years on from the end of the Vietnam War: “The timing was fate.” But it’s been fascinating to look back on a seminal moment of history through a 21stcentury lens. Van der Spuy thinks the show might provide a way for audiences to emotionally deal with some of the horrors and conflicts of our modern world, since it focuses on “the human aspect. It’s not about politics or agendas – it’s about the people in this situation.” Poet adds: “The musical shows how humans can connect with each other in the most difficult circumstances, and behave in both vile ways and beautiful ways. That feels meaningful right now.” Yet Miss Saigon is also extraordinarily transporting, notes Edwards, thanks to its soul-stirring music. Van der Spuy agrees: “That’s why all of us wanted to do it. Gorongosa National Park, which has enjoyed a restoration since it was devastated by civil war in the 1990s, has seen the opening of new lodges this year. “They’ve done an amazing conservation effort,” notes Tom. “It’s got everything from lions, elephants, buffalo, antelope, you name it. “Mozambique can now be considered a ‘bush and beach’ destination,” he says, meaning combining a safari with a beach break. Previously, he says, visitors typically did a safari in South Africa or Botswana and headed to Mozambique for a beach stay, “but now, in Mozambique, you can do both.” “It’s incredibly beautiful, there are some amazing islands and incredible diving, where you’ll find whale sharks, mantas, dolphins and sea turtles.”

MALLO RCA Luxury travel company ASmallWorld have named Mallorca Spain’s newest ‘It’ island, and say it’s one of the top five most asked about destinations in their discussion hub. “What makes Mallorca stand out from other Spanish islands is its sheer diversity,” says CEO Zain Richardson. “You get the bohemian charm of stone-built villages, the buzz of Palma’s restaurants and galleries, and an everchanging coastline of quiet calas and long sandy beaches, without having to compromise on comfort or style.” Dark sky tourism is set to be huge in 2026 and the US has some of the best places to see the stars, including Utah, Arizona and Idaho. Plus, a weakening dollar against the pound and more competitive airfares are also making a holiday to the US more attractive to British and Irish travellers.

M OZ AM B IQ U E Travel isn’t advised to Mozambique’s north region, bordering with Tanzania at the moment, but Tom Barber, co-founder of Original Travel, says the rest of the East African country is still on the hot list for 2026. “What’s happened there, and has happened in quite a few places, is that we’ve seen a whole country get tarred with the same brush, and people aren’t going to Mozambique as much as they should.”

SO U TH KO RE A From K-pop to Korean skincare, South Korea is huge right now and interest in the destination is only going to grow. Virgin Atlantic is launching its first direct flight from London Heathrow to capital Seoul in March 2026. Jeju-Do, Korea’s largest island, 50 miles off the mainland, also made the Lonely Planet list, at number 17, and has long been known as a domestic holiday destination, with beaches and lush greenery, it makes the perfect antidote to a few days in Seoul. Barber says: “Aman hotels, the super swanky ones, the baby brand is called Janu, is opening [a premise] in Seoul and it’s much more aimed at Gen Z. With the K-wave, new flights and new funky hotels, it’s definitely going to push [Seoul travel] along.”

easyJet launched a new flight route from London Luton to Georgia’s capital Tbilisi in the later part of 2025, and the Eastern European country is set to attract increasing numbers of visitors with other new international flight routes launching in 2026 – after previously being somewhat overlooked in neighbour Turkey’s shadow. “It’s definitely a fabulous country, it will be popular,” says Barber. Tbilisi boasts grand, wide boulevards and cobbled streets in a historic old town, as well as some famous sulphur baths, and outside the capital there are ancient monasteries and cathedrals, including the UNESCO-anointed Gelati Monastery in Kutaisi. Barber adds: “Everyone we send to Georgia comes back saying it’s just amazing. They’ve got incredible food and the oldest wine making industry in the world” – said to date back 8,000 years. Braised white beans and winter greens

SERVES 4

INGREDIENTS

1. Place a flameproof casserole over a medium heat with the olive oil.

1tbsp olive oil, plus more to serve 1 small fennel bulb, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped

2. Add the fennel, onion and rosemary and cook for 4–6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender. Next stir in the garlic and chilli flakes and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.

1. Preheat the oven to 170°C fan (375°F), Gas Mark 5.

300g cooked beetroot, peeled and cut into chunks (or cook your own beetroot)

2. Blend the beetroot in a food processor with the dates, melted butter, tamari and vanilla extract until smooth.

230g pitted dates, chopped 115g unsalted butter, melted 1tbsp tamari

3. Add the cacao, then the eggs (adding them at the end helps stop the cacao travelling up the sides of the machine). Blend until smooth and creamy.

4. Line a 12-hole muffin tray with paper muffin cases and transfer the mixture into the cupcake cases. These don’t rise and puff up, so fill them almost to the top. 5. Bake for 17–19 minutes. The cakes are ready when still slightly soft in the middle and will firm up as they cool. Cool on a wire rack, then transfer to the refrigerator.
