Heritage Reimagined Nykke Jones Interiors revives a 300-year-old cottage in Milton Abbas In the heart of the picture-perfect Dorset village of Milton Abbas — where rows of thatched cottages line a gently curving street — Nykke Jones Interiors has completed one of its most distinctive and delightful transformations: the full restoration and redesign of a 300-year-old Grade II listed cottage at 46 The Street. Milton Abbas itself is steeped in history. Conceived in the late 18th century by the 1st Earl of Dorchester, with landscape design by Capability Brown and architecture by Sir William Chambers, the village’s harmony and heritage are legendary. Yet when Nykke Jones was approached by homeowners Michelle and Dr Declan Keane, she took a refreshingly unconventional approach. Rather than defaulting to reverence and restraint, she set out to create something joyful, surprising, and full of personality — a home that celebrated history but also embraced bold modern living.

A joyful, modern take on heritage The brief was simple yet layered: bring the cottage back to life while expressing the individuality of its owners. Centuries of wear had left the interiors dark, divided, and weary. The vision was to honour the original bones of the house — its thick walls, beams, and lime plaster — but to inject colour, pattern, and fun. “We wanted a little chaos, a sense of humour, and warmth,” says Nykke. ‘’Michelle & I have had a lot of fun with this project!’’ The result is an inspired blend of maximalism and heritage charm, wrapped in comfort and contemporary flair. A three-year labour of love The restoration journey was a long one. Western Design Architects spent three years navigating the intricate planning process for the listed building consent. Once approved, CPC Building Contractors brought the vision to life with extraordinary craftsmanship, carefully repairing rather than replacing historic materials. Every detail — from lime plaster finishes to reclaimed timbers — was approached with respect for the building’s fabric. Where new elements were required, they were made using traditional techniques and locally sourced materials, ensuring authenticity in every corner. The outcome is a structure that feels as if it has evolved naturally through the centuries — yet now gleams with renewed vitality.

When it comes to wellbeing and projects around the home, the bathroom is one of the best places to start. After all, setting the scene for some me time, pampering ourselves with some favourite smellies to reduce stress, and boosting one’s overall mood is top of the sensory checklist… especially if you’re hankering after a spa-like sanctuary. Here, experts share today’s key bathroom trends to inspire some self-care…

Bathrooms are growing in size – and significance “We’ve seen a notable shift towards larger bathroom footprints,” says Kiya Kelly-Paine, home design trends expert at Houzz. This trend suggests people are rethinking the role of bathrooms, says Kelly-Paine, and rather than seeing them as merely functional, they’re looking to create relaxing retreats. Milena Vallier, lead designer at My Bespoke Room, says: “Today, they’re considered true wellness sanctuaries within the home. “We’re seeing a strong shift towards spa-inspired spaces, with calming, nature-led schemes and earthy palettes such as soft browns, sage greens, and warm terracottas.

“Layered textures and tactile materials, from tumbled stone and microcement to reeded wood detailing, add depth and a sense of luxury.” Moreover, Vallier says clients are increasingly prioritising indulgent features such as walk-in showers framed with minimalist glass screens, sculptural freestanding baths as centrepieces, and the comfort of underfloor heating to create a hotel-like experience at home. Minimalist style is on the rise “While contemporary and modern remain the dominant bathroom styles, Scandinavian and Japandi styles are growing in popularity, highlights Kelly-Paine. “Showing a preference for minimalist and natural aesthetics.” While matt black and brushed brass fixtures remain popular for their contemporary edge, Vallier says there’s a noticeable move towards cooler finishes like chrome, brushed nickel, and steel. “Which bring a refined, timeless elegance and are easier to maintain,” she continues. “Fluted glass, sculptural lighting, and built-in niches are also very popular key details – elevating the bathroom design and giving it a bespoke feel.”

Freestanding vanities are gaining momentum As in previous years, floating vanities are the top choice, with more than half of homeowners choosing them, underlines Kelly-Paine. However, she says freestanding vanity units have become more popular, with custom vanity units on the rise too. “Vanity units really do anchor a bathroom, they’re where function meets style,” says Nicole Burnett, interior designer and owner of Wise Owl Interiors. “Floating vanities are still a favourite, especially in smaller bathrooms, because they free up floor space – and make the room feel more open.” Burnett continues: “But I’m seeing more people leaning towards freestanding designs too… they offer that extra bit of storage, come in so many beautiful styles, and can really make a statement in the space.”

Sustainability is more mainstream Whether we want to save on costs or be environmentally friendly, sustainable features have become more of a priority, notes Kelly-Paine. “LED lighting was the top sustainable feature for renovating homeowners, but water efficiency is also one of the biggest considerations, followed by timeless design and energy-efficient features,” explains the Houzz home design trends expert.

Functionality fuels makeovers – but style matters While functional upgrades remain the biggest driver for bathroom renovations, Kelly-Paine says style upgrades have become a big motivator… with new homeowners wanting to personalise their space. “Bathroom renovations are always popular because they’re such hardworking spaces, but most clients also want to completely refresh the look while they’re at it,” highlights Burnett. “Whether it’s updating lighting and colour choices or going for a full style overhaul, creating a bathroom that feels calm and considered is always high on the list.” She says there’s a real focus on balancing function with aesthetics. “I’m still seeing clients gravitate towards natural, earthy palettes but with richer tones creeping in… burgundy, green and blue are featuring more and more. “Natural woods like oak and deep teak continue to ground spaces, while a contemporary modern feel is helping to blend old and new, especially in period homes,” adds Burnett. Start with a perfectly made bed Hotel rooms always feature beds that look (and feel) impeccable… Gierasinska says to layer textures for depth. “Begin with a supportive mattress, add a duvet with a crisp cover, and finish with a lighter blanket or throw across the foot of the bed. Mix smooth cotton with tactile fabrics like velvet or linen to create instant luxury.” You can also layer large, square cushions at the back for height, suggests Gierasinska, followed by smaller rectangular or bolster cushions for depth. “Consider arranging cushions symmetrically for a polished effect that’s associated with hotels; and limit the number to avoid clutter while keeping it inviting,” she adds. Choose a calming colour scheme While many hotels opt for all-white bedding, the surrounding palette tends to be warm and understated… “Soft neutrals, muted blues, and earthy greens create a peaceful backdrop,” highlights Gierasinska. “These tones are timeless, working just as well in modern spaces as they do in more traditional settings. Enough to take this stately saloon to 62mph in just 3.5 seconds and thanks to hybrid power it can cover around 47 miles on pure electric power. As one might imagine, sink your right foot into the carpet and the result is a smooth but very noticeable surge as around 2.5 tons of Crewe’s finest automotive work heads for the horizon at pace. It all feels nicely controlled, which given the size and weight of the Flying Spur is quite a tribute to Bentley.

The sheer number of luxuries in the car would take the newspaper equivalent of war and peace to document, some unnecessary but very cool, some you wouldn’t have thought necessary until you get to use them. Priced at £244,100 this is quite a bargain in terms of its power, space and presence for a luxury car.

When you cook a bigger piece of meat, or you grill on the barbecue, it can be overwhelming, like you don’t have control.” But, he says, once you understand the basics “it can be very simple. 4 x 100g fillet (lomo) medallions

1. Mix all the ingredients for the rub together and set aside (this will make a little more than you need for the recipe, but the remainder will keep for up to one month in an airtight container).

Then, sprinkle them lightly with sea salt. Bake the sweet potatoes for about 45-60 minutes, or until they are tender when pierced with a fork. INGREDIENTS

Meanwhile, prepare a cooking area over your embers/flame to give a medium–high grilling heat. 5. Remove the sirloins from the marinade, shaking off any excess. Place the steaks on your prepared grill and cook for about four to five minutes per side (for medium- rare), or until cooked to your desired level of ‘doneness’. Use the marinade left in the dish to baste the meat while it’s grilling – this will make sure you get maximum flavour. 6. Cover the cooked meat with foil and leave it to rest for about five minutes to allow the juices to redistribute. Slice, and serve with your favourite sides.

As the first real-life couple to star in 2:22 - A Ghost Story, Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton are relishing the chance to work together again. It’s been seven years since they took the Glitterball Trophy on Strictly Come Dancing. “And that feels like a really long time ago,” says Dooley now. The presenter, journalist and actress starred in the smash-hit thriller for a limited run at the Gielgud Theatre in the West End in 2024. She played Jenny, a young mother who along with her husband Sam has recently moved into a house that they are in the process of renovating. Every night at precisely 2:22am they hear strange and disconcerting sounds in a nerve-shredding thriller that The Guardian has hailed as “A slick, chilling romp of a play”. Written by Danny Robins and premiering in 2021, it was one of dancer and musical theatre star Clifton’s favourite plays even before he saw Dooley in it. “So that was another reason for us to say yes to the tour,” he says. The couple are parents to two-year-old Minnie and they’ll be taking her on the road with them when they embark on the 2:22 tour from early August until late November, with Stacey admitting: “Of course, travelling the country with a two-year-old will bring its own stresses, but it’s great that we can all be together as a family.” She smiles. “Kev and I have very different approaches. I take my work seriously, but he really throws himself into things, so he’ll be examining and dissecting every line of the script.”

Now it’s a reality and I’m buzzing about it.” They both have their theories as to why theatregoers enjoy a good thriller. “There’s something about scary stuff that takes you to the edge of your emotions,” Kevin feels, “and maybe there’s a bit of safety in numbers for the audience where they’re all in it together. They’re on the edge of their seats, waiting to see what’s going to happen next.” Having been in the show already Stacey agrees, adding: “During rehearsals you think you have an idea of how it’s going to play out, then you hear the audience gasp. It’s a thrill. There are points in the show where you hear them scream and you’re delighted because you see how invested they are.” For the record, Clifton scares easily when it comes to horror stories, Dooley not so much. And in real life? “The only thing I can’t deal with is rodents,” she grimaces.
