Christmas in October Think October is too early to be thinking about holiday lights? Think again. For one local business, the holiday season began back in August, and it’s in full force until the end of January.

eff Adamiak, the owner of GEM Home Maintenance, began We Hang Holiday Lights with his crew in the fall of 2017 to fill the primary business’s offseason. “It [holiday lights] sort of fit with our traditional business, window cleaning, power washing, that sort of slows down. … And then I just realized how much happier you make people hanging Christmas lights as opposed to cleaning their windows or cleaning the roof or something like that,” Adamiak says. “And I just fell in love with doing it. It became fun. It’s Christmas lights, who doesn’t like Christmas lights?” Thus, We Hang Holiday Lights was born, and business is booming with the team providing holiday cheer for more customers than ever before. In its first year, We Hang Holiday Lights served roughly 30 clients. Last year, the team decorated for 560 clients; this year, Adamiak expects to hang lights at more than 1,000 houses, with hundreds of new and returning customers whose demand for the specialized service is already filling up his team’s schedule. They are without question, the best in the business.

J

How It Works “We try to get as many of our customers installed in October. If you’re a returning customer, we want to get your lights installed in October because it’s safer. There’s no frost on the roof in the morning and the days are longer, so it allows us to get more work done. However, we still have availability in November and December as well.” Along with the team’s immaculate decorating and top-notch products, they provide maintenance service all throughout the holiday season. “Part of the contract is, we maintain everything. Bulb goes out? Give me a call We Hang and within 24 to 48 hours, I have somebody out there doing the repairs,” Adamiak Holiday Lights says. Mount Laurel, N.J. | (609) 267-3237 Maintenance is guaranteed until Jan. WeHangHolidayLightsNJ.com HouseMagazine.com

6, which is when We Hang Holiday Lights begins the process of taking displays down. “We come to disassemble the lights, we label them all and then store them for the customer at our facility.

Not Just a Light Company When Adamiak began We Hang Holiday Lights in 2017, he quickly realized the positive impact he was making on his customers. Since then, his team has added a philanthropic facet to the seasonal business, providing lights for families going through tough times and bringing some light to their holiday season. “We always try to look for as many of those as we can every year,” Adamiak says. “I’d like to do more of those. Those are the most enjoyable jobs ever.”

Only the Best We Hang Holiday Lights only uses the best lights in the business, or, as Adamiak admirably calls them, “the Bentleys of the holiday light industry.” The company uses C9 lights and customizes the length of the strips to perfectly shape the architecture of each house. “I can cut these lights to fit any length, any design. … And then, of course we can do bushes and trees and shrubs,” Adamiak says. All of the lights used by We Hang Holiday Lights are warm LEDs, not to be mistaken for the bright blue that people usually associate with LED lighting. These lights are incredibly illuminating and replicate the look of incandescent lights while using only 10% of the energy. Adamiak believes that a job worth doing is worth doing right, and his customers certainly get what they pay for. He even compares his team’s quality of work to that of Philadelphia’s Boathouse Row and the iconic displays at Downtown Disney, but better!

ITH THE POOL SEASON WINDING DOWN, we wanted to find out about some of the biggest changes taking place in the industry as well as what will be hot in 2027. To help learn more, we spoke with Bryan Hull of Del Val Pools & Spas. For three generations, the Hull family has been building custom gunite pools throughout the Tri-State area and are known for high-quality, durable pools that transform a backyard into a private oasis. WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING HEADING INTO 2027?

Contemporary pool design that emphasizes geometric shapes, dark finishes, wellness features, Bryan Hull, smart automation Partner and compact, spaceefficient layouts for modern, resort-style backyards. Rectangular and L-shaped pools dominate current designs at Del Val Pools & Spas, offering clean, modern lines that integrate well with contemporary architecture and maximize yard space. Freeform shapes are also resurging for natural, garden-inspired aesthetics, often paired with landscaping, boulders and organic planting beds. Rounded interior corners, offset spas and integrated tanning ledges soften geometric designs, creating a resort-like

HouseMagazine.com

feel without sacrificing architectural clarity . Dark interior finishes are also trending, including deep blues, charcoal and graphite. These colors create a dramatic, high-end look and help absorb solar heat, extending swimming comfort in cooler months. Warm, earthy tones like terracotta, clay and sand are also popular, providing a spa-inspired, natural feel that blends with outdoor living spaces. What’s more, textured surfaces, artisanal tiles and glass mosaics add visual depth and tactile interest, making the pool finish a key design feature . Pools designed by Del Val Pools & Spas are increasingly designed as wellness centers, incorporating integrated spas, swim jets, plunge zones and relaxation areas. Tanning ledges, built-in seating and wraparound benches can enhance comfort and versatility, creating a resort-style experience in any backyard. This is where we really excel in pool design and function. Pool design requires an atmosphere which is visually striking, blending relaxation, fitness and entertainment. Fire bowls, decorative water features and resort-inspired lounges add luxury and ambiance. The overall trend favors integration with the landscape, creating a seamless connection between the pool, outdoor living areas and the home.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST CHANGE IN POOLS IN THE PAST DECADE?

Pools are now for everyone. They are an investment in family and lifestyle memories, and a swimming pool increases value and marketability of a residence. The biggest change we see at Del Val Pools & Spas is automation of pool controls—and we love it. Energy-efficient heating systems and digital automation permit remote control of lighting, temperature and water chemistry via apps, improving convenience and efficiency. Variable-speed pumps, solar heating and durable, low-maintenance materials further enhance sustainability and reduce operating costs. It’s also worth mentioning that the costs of constructing different types of pools have narrowed over the past few years. Custom gunite pools have become just as competitive as many of the standard pre-formed pools, and custom gunite pools integrate better into the landscape while allowing for more features. SO WHAT’S YOUR SECRET?

The secret to Del Val Pools & Spas is simple. We build a quality product that stands the test of time for a competitive price. All of the design and building process is completed by Del Val Pools and Spas—from the initial excavation to the spraying of gunite to the final coat of plaster. By controlling all aspects of the job, we control costs and scheduling bringing in projects on time and on budget—and we’ve been doing it for three generations. Del Val Pools & Spas has become the brand synonymous with quality, durable, long-lasting construction.

LOORING CONTINUES TO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN HOW HOMEOWNERS APPROACH THE LOOK, FEEL AND FUNCTIONALITY OF THEIR SPACES. Among the options gaining continued attention are luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and engineered hardwood, two flooring categories that offer distinct advantages while keeping pace with evolving design preferences. To explore the benefits of each and the trends shaping today’s flooring choices, we spoke with Rich Lauletta of Haddon Flooring. In the following Q&A, Lauletta shares his perspective on what homeowners are looking for, where LVP and engineered hardwood fit into today’s homes and what to consider when selecting a floor that balances aesthetics, performance and long-term value.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGES OF LUXURY VINYL PLANK FLOORING?

“Luxury vinyl plank delivers the look of real wood with exceptional durability, water resistance and easy maintenance. It’s a great choice for busy families, pets, basements, kitchens and virtually any high-traffic area.”

HOW DO LUXURY VINYL PLANK AND ENGINEERED HARDWOOD COMPARE WHEN IT COMES TO DURABILITY, MOISTURE RESISTANCE AND EVERYDAY WEAR AND TEAR?

“LVP is extremely durable and highly moisture resistant, making it ideal for active households. Engineered hardwood is also durable, but because it is real wood, it requires a little more care around moisture, scratches and heavy wear.” WHEN HELPING A CUSTOMER CHOOSE BETWEEN LVP AND ENGINEERED HARDWOOD, WHAT FACTORS SHOULD THEY CONSIDER TO FIND THE BEST FIT FOR THEIR HOME?

“We look at lifestyle, location, moisture, pets, traffic, budget and the overall look the homeowner wants to achieve. There isn’t one ‘best’ floor—the right choice is the one that performs beautifully for the way you actually live.”

WHAT MAKES ENGINEERED HARDWOOD A COMPELLING CHOICE FOR HOMEOWNERS?

BOTH OPTIONS COME IN A WIDE RANGE OF COLORS, TEXTURES AND FINISHES. WHAT FLOORING STYLES AND DESIGN TRENDS ARE HOMEOWNERS GRAVITATING TOWARD RIGHT NOW?

“Engineered hardwood gives you genuine wood underfoot, with the warmth, character and natural variation homeowners love. Its layered construction also provides added stability compared with traditional solid hardwood.”

“We’re seeing a strong move toward natural, timeless looks—wide planks, warm oak tones, subtle grain patterns and matte finishes. Homeowners increasingly want flooring that feels upscale without looking overly trendy.”

uccessful, reputable companies understand the importance of building relationships with lifelong customers. The Fireplace People—with locations in West Berlin and Marmora—is no exception. “We want to provide such excellent service that you can trust in us and refer us to all your contacts,” co-owner Michael Campeggio says. “We will do everything in our power to accommodate schedules and budgets to make sure the process is as seamless as possible. Our customers come first, as we know they are the only reason we have been around for over 50 years.” With a dedicated staff that includes licensed master hearth specialists and NFIcertified experts, The Fireplace People has been installing all types of fireplaces— including electric, gas and wood-burning— in South Jersey homes since 1975. Their fireplace display in their West Berlin showroom is one of the largest in the region, and the company also boasts a full-service department for repairing gas fireplaces. “People come to us if they are looking to add a fireplace to their living space, convert an existing wood-burning fireplace to gas or convert their inefficient wood fireplaces to efficient heaters,” Campeggio says. While ownership switched hands in 2023 when Campeggio and Pat Sobocinski bought the company, the pair maintained its

strong reputation as the go-to spot for all things fireplace, along with the company’s top-tier customer service. Having worked for the company for more than 20 years prior, the dedicated pair truly understood what The Fireplace People stood for before becoming owners.

Every job is approached with the same sense of care and attention to detail, whether it’s needing a $15 part for a fireplace or hiring the team for a $10,000 installation. “We are dedicated to help those seeking our service and knowledge and position ourselves as the experts in our field,” Campeggio says. A common misconception is that The Fireplace People is a “chimney company,” according to Campeggio. While they do not clean chimneys, they have strong industry relationships with companies that do and

are happy to refer customers. “We strongly believe that when you do something, do it well and do it the best. We don’t spread ourselves thin over multiple services while not doing what we mainly do well,” Campeggio explains. “We do fireplaces really well, so that is our focus.” Over their quarter century in the business, Campeggio and Sobocinski have seen trends and styles come and go. Right now, they’re seeing the uncertainty surrounding gas and oil prices impacting fireplace decisions in the home. “People are seeking more stable fuel choices by installing wood-burning stoves and also wood-burning inserts into existing fireplaces,” Campeggio says. The interest in electric fireplaces is also on the rise. “They are so versatile that even those living in condos or apartments can add a fireplace feature to their living space to add a cozier feel,” Campeggio adds. Of course, gas fireplaces continue to be the company’s mainstay. Once installed, a gas fireplace is going to provide 20 to 30 years of continued use with minimal upkeep. “This is all assuming yearly maintenance is done, which is about a $300 per year investment,” Campeggio says. Another thing that hasn’t changed over the years is why people are installing, updating and maintaining fireplaces, beyond their functionality as a source of heat. “The fireplace is the gathering point of a family often in a space where the best, warmest memories are made,” Campeggio says. “Imagine that Christmas morning or nestling up in the family room watching a movie. We often don’t remember what was said but we always remember how we felt, and a fireplace can enhance that relaxed, warm feeling like no other.” Campeggio and Sobocinski understand there are many choices when someone is looking to add, replace or convert a fireplace in their home. When someone chooses The Fireplace People, they can rest assured they made the right decision. “We will always do our best to provide you with not only the most functional solution for your situation but also the most dedicated team to your satisfaction,” Campeggio says. “Whether it’s a full-scale project or you just need service on your current fireplace, we are The Fireplace People and we are here to serve you.”

hether you’ve saved up for the bathroom remodel of your dreams or you’ve plunged into a home improvement project unexpectedly, you want experienced professionals who are willing to stand behind their work. New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the country, giving rise to a sea of home improvement businesses. It can be overwhelming to find, to research and to settle on a professional dedicated to getting the job done right. With its local roots, commitment to excellence, foundational customer service and industry knowledge, the decision is easy with Blissful Baths & Home. House & Home spoke with Blissful Baths & Home President, Jeffrey Kay, about what separates them from the competition and the importance of local flavor and a client-first approach.

LOCAL DEDICATION Located in Egg Harbor Township, Blissful is deeply connected to South Jersey. Each member of the Blissful team is a member of the local community and as such, each client is treated as a neighbor. Beyond a local interest in bettering the homes in New Jersey, living and operating in the state gives Blissful a unique understanding of the needs and tastes of Jersey residents. From the bridge to the Shore, some things are universal—everyone is looking for the space of their dreams without spending a fortune and Blissful is eager to help. Proud to be from New Jersey, Blissful is committed to its community through every project. “We take great pride in creating jobs in the New Jersey economy,” says Kay. “We quietly participate in helping local businesses and families who can use the help. CUSTOMER-CENTRIC APPROACH Blissful understands that home remodeling is an important investment and one that is not always an easy one for homeowners. That’s why customer service is the bedrock of their company. “Everything we do is geared towards creating the best customer experience possible. While a lot of companies say that sort of thing, the founders of Blissful have pioneered that concept. Everything we do is done with transparency and to the best of our collective abilities,” says Kay. “We understand the importance of the investments our neighbors make in their homes and so we want them to know that their investment is protected and well-made with us.” In order to assist homeowners in making their dream homes a reality and to ease the burden of unexpected repairs, Blissful partners with three larger lenders “to serve the full spectrum of homeowners regardless of today’s financial challenges,” according to Kay. Financing makes home improvements more accessible, and allows costly, unexpected repairs

and replacements to be resolved quickly without breaking the bank.

INNOVATION DESIGNS If you’re looking to replace an outdated bath, it’s important to work with a company willing and able to bring your space into the modern times. Blissful keeps up with innovations and trends to ensure their customers aren’t left behind. “We are considered leaders of the industry and are invited into a lot of the beta testing, case studies and meetings around new and innovative designs,” says Kay. “We participate at the highest levels of the industry so we can offer the best to our clients.“ Right now, homeowners are drawn to the trend of a simpler, cleaner look. White showers, black trim and gray vanities are just some of the popular looks in today’s bathrooms. However, the point of a home remodel is to make your space feel authentic, so if you’re looking to ditch the trends and follow your own path, Blissful is there for any creative vision.

More Than a Pool Swim-Mor Pools & Spas elevates backyard atmospheres with quality custom designs by Kristen Dowd

S

wim-Mor Pools & Spas partner and general manager Mike McCool recognizes that there is a lot more that goes into a new pool than there used to be.

“The backyard has transformed over the last 10 years or so away from being just ‘your yard’ and into another room of your home with the same care and detail put into it,” McCool says. “Because of this the design of your pool has become more than just a pool but the focus of the outdoor living room. There is a lot of coordination with creating what a customer’s backyard haven is going to be.” Fortunately, the family-owned South Jersey business is more than up to the challenge of bringing a customer’s backyard pool vision to life. In its 59 years of business, Swim-Mor Pools & Spas has helped to create thousands of backyard paradises throughout the region. And what’s more, they make the process as easy as possible for their customers. “We’re a start-to-finish gunite custom pool company—the design, the build and the service afterward,” McCool says. “We have our own crews that handle the work which helps us control quality and makes the process go smoother.” There are six designers at Swim-Mor Pools & Spas who can help guide customers on a new pool design. The company’s countless photos and 3D drawings can provide inspiration, and the final design is what best suits the backyard, according to McCool. “Size, setbacks, elevations. We’re here to help you work through that,” he says.

HouseMagazine.com

Finding the right pool “The first step is to give us a call. From there we’ll set up an appointment to come out to your home,” McCool says. “That way we can see all the aspects of the property. What the contours of the yard are. What the access is like. Even the best location based on where the sun rises and sets.” The timeline to get started is largely based on the homeowner and how decisive they are, McCool adds. Once everything is confirmed, things move to contract and Swim-Mor Pools & Spas starts working on permits. “Time is of the essence. Permits can take from two weeks to several months, all depending on the municipality,” McCool says.

Pool popularity

“other than the increased popularity of adding more bells and whistles to the pool.” Natural stone is popular for the coping along the pool’s edge, McCool says, as well as darker finishes in the pool. A majority of SwimMor Pools & Spa customers are using a salt sanitation system and automated controls in their new pools, as well as choosing to add water features—waterfalls, fountains, deck jets and plenty more. The company also offers many in- pool fixtures for lounging—bar stools and benches that can tie into your outdoor kitchen or can run inside the pool, along with table areas, sundecks for your lounge chairs and custom fire features. Color LED lighting packages come with every pool, too. The majority of customers also choose elements to lengthen their pool-enjoying season, such as heaters and spas. “It will extend your pool season by a few months,” McCool says.

Why Swim-Mor Pools & Spas? Being a local family-owned independent business makes Swim-Mor Pools & Spas a smart choice for customers, according to McCool. “We’re not national. We’re not a franchise. And we do not try to sell everything. Our expertise has been building custom gunite pools for 59 years and that’s what we focus on,” he says. Save for a few aspects that are legally required to be outsourced to independent licensed contractors, Swim-Mor Pools & Spas uses all of their own crews for the pool construction, which McCool says is unique for the pool business. In addition to building new pools, SwimMor Pools & Spas also specializes in renovating gunite pools. The experienced team can handle everything from your standard renovation of replacing your coping, tile and plaster finish, to adding features such as raised water features, sun decks, and even spas that were not originally built with the pool. McCool says, “Even though your pool may not have originally been built with the more current popular features doesn’t mean that Swim-Mor cannot add them now.” The 2026 pool season is already underway for the business, which thanks to the mild winter meant they were able to start construction early. Pool openings and service will ramp up from mid-April to Memorial Day. But, for those looking to add a pool to their backyard this summer, it’s not too late. “We’re still building for this year. We’re still selling for this summer,” McCool says. “But don’t waste time. Get in!”

Prior to March 2020, business was strong for Swim-Mor Pools & Spa. That was only boosted when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the region. “The pool business was never busier than it was in COVID,” McCool says. “The lockdowns forced people to stay at home and they immediately focused on the backyard.” Although that business boom has settled down a bit, things are still busy. But pool trends, according to McCool, have held fairly steady. Hampton-style pools have long been a customer favorite, but equally popular are the freeform designs, which can be customized to fit into any backyard environment. “Through COVID there have not been many Mount Ephraim | Northfield | Millstone Township significant changes in the industry,” McCool says, (848) 301-2988 | SwimMor.com

Heating Up As it’s Cooling Down

T

Local experts share the biggest heating mistakes they see with customers and the best ways to keep ahead of costly and dangerous situations.

he Farmers’ Almanac is forecasting an unpredictable winter season full of surprises in the Northeast, and although our region in particular may be seeing some above-normal temperatures overall, a fair amount of snow days could pop up as well. Regardless, with the season’s first frost right around the corner, it’s time to be thinking about the best ways to keep warm this winter—and, more importantly, the heating mistakes to avoid. After all, heating mishaps are not

38

only about inconvenience, but safety, too. “The No. 1 mistake is not having your heater chimney inspected. Almost everyone has a heater that vents into a chimney,” Joe Ochal says. “We do chimney inspections regularly in the Philadelphia region, and the amount of carbon monoxide we find is literally unbelievable.” Ochal is owner of Chimney Scientists, a full-service chimney company offering inspections, cleanings, repairs and installations. The company routinely finds poor chimney

maintenance that leads to carbon monoxide leaks in the home—leaks that are not necessarily high enough to set off a carbon monoxide detector, but are high enough to cause adverse health reactions like headaches and drowsiness. “It’s going to make you sluggish, irritable, tired. And it’s amazing to me that we focus a lot on our health today, buying organic foods and things of that nature, but not getting our chimneys inspected,” Ochal says.

HouseMagazine.com

HH_HeatingMistakes_0926-v2_Layout 1 9/22/26 11:18 AM Page 2

Prioritizing maintenance Maintenance is the name of the game with fireplace chimneys, too, according to Chris Olsen, owner of Newtown Fireplace Shop, a retail fireplace business that also offers inspection and installation services. “I would say the biggest mistake when heating with gas fireplaces is not keeping up with good annual maintenance,” he says. “If they’re not serviced regularly, they’re going to burn inefficiently, increase energy costs and reduce heat output. A poorly functioning fireplace can put soot out into the home, too.”

HouseMagazine.com

Things, of course, are a little different for woodburning fireplaces or stoves. While annual maintenance is important to make sure the flu is clean, there are no blockages and everything is up to code, Olsen says the biggest mistake he sees with woodburning sources is customers who are burning the wrong type of wood. “It sounds silly, but improperly seasoned wood is not going to burn efficiently. You want to be in the proper range of moisture content—around 15% to 20%. Too high, you won’t get the heat output. It will create more creosote in the flu and cause blockages

in the chimney,” Olsen explains. “When the moisture content is too low, it’s burning way too hot and you’ll be going through a tremendous amount of wood.” Wood fireplaces can also create a buildup of creosote in the chimney—a highly flammable residue that can be left behind as substances such as smoke and gases escape through the chimney. This can especially happen when a fireplace is burning inefficiently. “Creosote can cause a chimney fire, and that can lead to a house fire,” Ochal says.

When to call The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends a chimney inspection every year. These inspections do not have to be when the weather cools and the heat clicks on. In fact, that’s often when homeowners realize there’s a problem stemming from blockages, damage or even code issues. “People think we’re these ‘Chim Chim

Cher-ee’ chimney sweeps, but most of our business is emergency calls from carbon monoxide and people’s heater chimneys getting blocked,” Ochal says, adding that these emergencies can be avoided with simple chimney inspections. So, when’s the best time to call? “We definitely recommend doing it between Memorial Day and Labor Day in the summer months. It seems counterintuitive

but you want to do it before the season starts,” Olsen says, explaining his company stays extremely busy from September through March. Ochal echoes this idea, but the bottom line is to get chimney inspections “whenever you can.” “Just do it. It may be fine if it’s not that old,” he says, “but you need to get that inspection.”

Holiday

Magic

By Matt Cosentino

ONCE FALL ARRIVES, BETHANY ASSOCIATES USES ITS EXPERIENCED HOME EXTERIOR CREWS TO BRING JOY TO AREA NEIGHBORHOODS WITH BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS LIGHT DESIGN AND INSTALLATION.

E

very year, Bethany Associates—a company with 30 years of experience that specializes in window cleaning, powerwashing, gutter cleaning and other home exterior services— donates a free Christmas light installation to a local resident in need of a pick-me-up. Last year’s recipient was a woman whose military husband was serving in Japan and unable to come home to celebrate the holidays with her and their four young children, all under the age of 8. Bethany’s technicians decided to make the occasion as memorable as possible, so they dressed up as elves and told the children they were sent by Santa Claus to bring some Christmas magic to their home. They even went out on their own, bought presents and wrapped them for the kids. Santa then arrived to sing carols with the family and their relatives and friends, before counting down the unveiling of the beautiful light display. “The kids were blown away, their mom was crying and the neighbors were really excited. It was just the best,” recalls Jared Barton, the co-founder, president and CEO of Bethany Associates. “It doesn’t get any better than that. That’s why we do what we do.” Community support has always been a cornerstone of the company, and so has creating a family atmosphere among its staff. That’s why Bethany expanded into Christmas light design and installation four years ago, so that its seasonal employees could be retained during its

shoulder season and not face layoffs. The additional service has taken off, as families dealing with the hectic season can focus on shopping for presents and planning holiday parties instead of untangling lights, pulling out the ladder from the garage and putting themselves at risk of injury. “Everyone knows the holiday season can get overwhelming with the to-do lists,” Barton says. “The beauty of our Christmas light service is that we are your elves, making your life a little easier. With a 15-minute call, you coordinate design concepts, and we literally take care of everything from there. You won’t have to even mess with the light timer. Our elves are like magic: One moment you have a quiet home, and the next you have lights, wreaths and garland sparkling and bringing joy to your family and neighborhood.” While homeowners have plenty of options for Christmas light installation these days, there are several major differentiators between Bethany Associates and its competitors. One is the safety element: The company is OSHA fall protection-compliant, and unlike almost all other organizations offering this service, its installers are harnessed and protected when working on the roof, preventing injuries for the workers and claims on the homeowners policy for the clients. Additionally, Bethany Associates custom designs each project and uses commercial-grade

products with better quality than can be found at the big box stores. “Our lead designer is an artist bringing her passion for color, vibrancy and composition to our team of designers,” Barton says. “The results are custom beautiful displays that fit your vision with guided assistance, well beyond what consumer items and weekend efforts can produce.” And while many people dream of a white Christmas, if storms arrive and cause damage, Bethany’s crews will come right out to straighten a wreath or re-hang lights. Those same teams will be back in January to take down the displays and store them for use next year. Barton loves the reactions that the Christmas lights elicit, such as past giveaways honoring veterans, police officers, fire fighters, first responders and a children’s home. This year’s theme is a bit different. “It’s a traditional American value to support the people who hold the community together,” he says. “Those are the people who do it. But they’re not alone—your grandmother also holds the community together, which is why we’re honoring great grandmas this time around. It’s all about family. These are the things that get forgotten, and Christmas is a time to remember.” Even with regular customers, the feelings surrounding holiday displays is hard to put into words. Many clients have recently lost a loved one and the lights bring them much-needed joy. “One of the things we love about this is that it puts everybody in a great mood,” Barton says. “We hear about terrible tragedies and the lights being an awesome encouragement to people that is truly bringing them hope during a difficult time of the year.” Barton encourages homeowners interested in the service to get on the schedule soon, because it fills quickly. Bethany Associates starts doing installs in mid-September and continues all the way through the week before Christmas. Even after three decades in business, the company still never takes any customer for granted, and Barton hopes every client feels like they can trust Bethany Associates. “There are a ton of Christmas light installers out there,” he says. “We’ve been around for a long time, so we understand the value of someone choosing us, and we like to say thank you when we’re done. We’re going to take care of people, and if they’re happy with the service, we would love to take care of their home for the rest of the year with our core services.”

OUTDOOR LIVING

Small Changes, Stronger Impact From smarter pruning and planting to basic and high-impact changes, find out what works for your landscape this fall season. B Y G I A N A S C A F I D E

all landscaping doesn’t always call for a complete revamp. In many yards, the biggest improvements come from well-timed decisions. To find out more, House & Home spoke with local experts who shared their knowledge on how to achieve a suitable landscape for fall.

Start With the Basics Before adding anything new, take care of the landscape’s fundamentals. Fall is still an active growing season for both lawns and plants, and treating the yard as though winter has already arrived can create problems. One common mistake is abandoning lawn care too early. Fall is also an important opportunity to overseed areas and repair bare spots before it’s too cold for new grass to establish. “Grass is still actively growing in September and much of October,” says Chris DeMato, owner of Rock Bottom Landscaping. “Continue mowing as needed, and don’t leave the lawn excessively long going into winter.” Fertilizer and mulch are also important in keeping a healthy appeal. Applying too much fertilizer can encourage unnecessary growth instead of helping plants. And when it comes to mulch, more isn’t necessarily better. Two to three inches is generally sufficient, and mulch should never be piled against tree trunks and shrub stems. “Fertilize: You’ll have a great impact on your plants right now,” confirms George Mihalchick, owner of Ponds by George. “Adding character, which would be something decorative, in a planter in your garden that you can plant around is great as well.”

Prune With Purpose Fall is a natural time to look at shrubs and perennials, but that doesn’t mean everything should be cut back. Pruning is needed when fixing your landscape for fall, but the way you go about it matters. “Cutting back shrubs and trees too heavily can remove next year’s flower buds and encourage tender new growth before winter,” DeMato states. A specific type of pruning that can be used is deadheading. Once certain flowers have finished blooming, removing them can encourage additional flowering and keep the plant looking cleaner. “One of the biggest mistakes I see is when homeowners have flowers like daylilies—they flower and then you don’t deadhead them,” Mihalchick says. “If you deadhead something once it’s done flowering, nine times out of 10 you are going to get more flowers. People don’t usually do regular maintenance on their plants, so it only blooms once.”

Think in Layers, Not Just Flowers A landscape that relies entirely on flowers can lose much of its visual interest once summer ends. A layered design by contrast can provide homeowners with shape, texture and color as different plants move through their seasonal cycles. The current preference for fewer plants with better placement works particularly well. “For longer-lasting structure, boxwoods, hollies and evergreens provide the backbone, while ornamental grasses, hydrangeas and looser perennials soften the design,” DeMato says. “Late-season perennials like sedum, cone-

berries that’s completely defoliated and it has brilliant red berries, just clusters of them all over the plant.”

Make A Few Effective Changes

flower and anemone extend color beyond the summer season.” Consider plants that also work well for the winter, as they become more interesting after their leaves disappear. “There is a plant called variegated red twig dogwood,” Mihalchick exclaims. “This has variegated leaves, and when it drops its leaves, its twigs turn brilliant red all winter long. So even to do those in a planter, to do those in your garden, do them where you can see them.

They’re gorgeous in the snow because they’re bright red twigs that grow up from this plant, so it stands out.” Winterberry offers another strong seasonal feature. Once the foliage drops, clusters of red berries remain on the branches through winter, providing color and attracting certain animals. “This plant will produce berries that turn red all winter, and the birds will come and eat them,” continues Mihalchick. “It’s a bush with red

For homeowners who don’t want to redesign an entire landscape, relatively small improvements can make a noticeable difference. Lighting is one effective improvement as the days grow shorter. A well-placed light can highlight certain trees, architectural features or an entryway that can go unnoticed when the sun goes down. “A relatively small change with a big payoff is adding landscape lighting, a few wellpositioned uplights on specimen trees or the house can completely transform the property at night,” affirms DeMato. Most homeowners tend to overdo with seasonal decor, and one way to make sure everything’s not overwhelmed is with structure.

“Use a piece of driftwood, put it in your garden, put it on anything that’s going to give you structure,” says Mihalchick. “A nice curving piece of driftwood adds a lot more attention than a plant.” The most successful fall landscape changes aren’t necessarily about making a yard look more seasonal. They’re about making decisions that work now and continue to work once the leaves are gone.
