hese days, homeowners are transforming their outdoor living spaces into year-round retreats complete with amenities to make each season enjoyable, often bringing the comforts of the interior of the home to the exterior, while blending functionality with pleasing aesthetics. Whether you’re looking to enhance the area around your pool in the summer with lush landscaping and water features, install an outdoor kitchen to entertain family and friends or perhaps adding synthetic grass to work on your golf game, the possibilities to elevate your outdoor space are plentiful. To find out more about the latest trends, House & Home spoke with some industry experts to get a sense of a few of the ways homeowners are turning their yards into resort-like spaces.
BRINGING THE INSIDE OUT Nick Erman, co-owner of Evergreen Pros, says many homeowners are creating out20

door living rooms in order to utilize their space throughout the year. “This can be accomplished by adding projects such as outdoor kitchens, televisions and heaters,” he says. In addition, common outdoor cooking instruments like grills and smokers can be incorporated into an outdoor design creating a cohesive and classy look. The grill no longer needs to sit awkwardly against the side of the house waiting to be used. It can be deconstructed and sit within an outdoor island. But outdoor food preparation goes beyond specialty items like the pizza oven or grill. Adding in components

like sinks, trash cans or refrigerators can eliminate the need to keep running in and out of the house—leaving you with more time to interact with your guests and decreasing the amount of bugs and heating and air conditioning entering and exiting your home. “A fully operational outdoor kitchen allows customers to have everything at the tip of their fingers in their outdoor oasis,” says Erman. “We want them to have the same features they have inside so that when they’re cooking all they have to do is bring their food out.” Having a fully functional outdoor kitchen elevates the backyard experience by allowing the cook to stay present with family and friends. It
eliminates the need to leave one or two people inside to prepare the food while everyone else has fun outside.
WATER & FIRE Those looking for a little more calmness in their lives will undoubtedly benefit from the soothing sounds of added water features in the backyard. “Any water feature with moving water will absolutely complete any landscape or backyard project. Imagine sitting on your new patio or deck and hearing the sounds of water while you are grilling, relaxing or even entertaining. A water feature will definitely be the focal point of any garden. be seen inside and outside as well. These features will be enjoyed all year long. The flowing water in warmer weather will then transform into amazing ice sculptures flowing down the rocks. This is truly stunning, especially with lighting at night,” explains George Mihalchick, owner of Ponds By George. Especially with an intention in mind such as a designated relaxation, amusement or dining area, the finished product enhances the lifestyles of those within the residence. It’s another plus if the features incorporated fit their personalities and are interactive. “Ponds themselves bring so much fun and enjoyment, especially with children. fish. Eventually fish will get used to being fed at a certain place and time and will even notice when you come to feed them. They may even let you feed them out of your hand,” says Mihalchick. Fire features alongside water features are also a popular way to add a wow factor with contrasting elements, from a fire pit to sit around after getting out of the pool, to actually combining them in a fire and water bowl where both flow simultaneously. “We call it living the lifestyle … even when you’re inside and you look outside, you always see a water feature. happen if you have seats by it. And I can tell you that a fire pit will usually be by a water feature, because it’s soothing, it’s relaxing,” adds Mihalchick.
A SHADY SITUATION When it comes to spending time outdoors, shaded areas are always coveted. One particular area of interest in recent years has been motorized louvered roof systems, which provide pergola like coverage when open, but can quickly

be closed to provide a break from the abundant sunshine or inclement weather. These systems are fully motorized allowing you to rotate the louvers as needed throughout the day via remote control. When fully closed for rain showers, the water runs from the louvers to the gutters attached to the beams and then down through the posts which act as drain spouts. And with added customizations, you can personalize the system to your specific needs and desires. “We’ve had customers request specific colors and finishes, to wrap with Azek or wood to match the existing home architecture, and even to add pergola tails or specific lighting. It’s all possible,” says Karen Frederick, owner of The Louvered Roof Company. Frederick adds that the most popular accessory requests of late are lights and a

fan, but many clients also want screens and heaters. “These turn the system into a three or even four season space. It’s a little extra investment but allows for much more use of the space,” she says. Each system is individually designed and made to order. “We start with a consultation to understand how you want to use the space and if it’s to cover a deck, patio or if it’s part of a new outdoor living space. There are so many ways to customize the design to create a flow from the style of the home through to the outdoor living area. ... It really is about design and functionality,” Frederick says. Additionally, awnings remain a popular way to provide shade to your outdoor living area. With features like adjustable pitch and integrated LED lighting, awnings create a comfortable, stylish space for relaxing or enter-
taining in any weather. But beyond shade, awnings also provide some underlying benefits that homeowners may not realize, according to Josh Eberly of Marygrove Awnings. “Awnings help lower indoor cooling costs by reducing heat through windows. They also protect outdoor furniture and flooring from sun damage,” he says.

Advancements in technology have also expanded possibilities, with smart awnings giving homeowners full control from an app on their phone. “Smart controls offer total convenience and these features elevate comfort and create a more usable, personalized space. [Homeowners] can open or close the awning, adjust lights and receive weather alerts. Wind sensors protect the awning by retracting it in strong winds, which adds convenience and safety, making smart awnings an increasingly popular choice,” says Eberly.
KEEP ON THE GRASS “I haven’t mowed my lawn in 23 years,” a proud Jason Mitnick says. Mitnick is the owner of JM Synthetic Grass and says one of the biggest advantages of the products he offers is it eliminates energy and effort necessary to maintain your lawn, no matter if you push the mower

yourself or pay a landscaper. “You don’t need a mower, you don’t need a weed whacker, you don’t have to water, seed and all the stuff that goes along with keeping your lawn in top shape,” he affirms. In addition to freeing up your time to enjoy your outdoor space, synthetic grass is especially attractive to pet owners. “I go to some backyards and it looks like they were bombed by the government,” Mitnick quips. “The dogs are digging their way to China and they’re tracking the dirt back into the house. …. People aren’t going to give up their pet, so they give up their lawn. “People choose the synthetic grass because there’s no more contact between the dog and the dirt. We have grasses that are designed especially for pets and have a high volume of drainage through it, so the urine washes out fast. … The dog stays clean. The house
stays clean. The yard stays clean.” Others who may consider adding synthetic grass to their yard may include golf lovers who opt to put a section in the backyard to work on their short game, or parents looking to add a play area for their children that can take a beating and look no worse for the wear. There are lots of other possibilities as well, like creating a bocce ball court or even a batting cage area if the yard is large enough. Hiring a design-build professional who is certified with the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) can alleviate concerns while making sure homeowners avoid costly mistakes and delays. To find out more, we spoke with David David Cerami, Cerami, president of President HomeTech Renovations.
I
WHAT SHOULD HOMEOWNERS UNDERSTAND WHEN CONSIDERING A KITCHEN REMODEL?
A kitchen remodel is a lot more in depth than, let’s say, a more simple estimate for other services, whether it’s driveway coating, fencing, carpeting, painting and so forth. There’s so many moving parts to doing a kitchen and doing it properly. I think it’s important to realize that no contractor or designer is going to walk in and scribble down an estimate on the back of the business card and say, “Here’s what it costs.” I always recommend to really consider experience by an accredited, certified individual. Contractors are good at swinging a hammer, they’re good at putting the pieces together, but they’re not necessarily good at the design and engineering phase. And you could hire a good designer, but they may not be good at the mechanical engineering phase and may design things that are a lot more costly to execute, especially in a retrofit remodel. To me, the two things have to work together when you’re designing effectively— you have to have vision, you have to have creativity, you have to be able to commuHouseMagazine.com
nicate and demonstrate some of the concepts to the homeowner, through AutoCAD or other sophisticated design programs. Working with someone who can understand the design, understand the build, understand how to communicate and value-base engineer something is critical. So look for somebody that is part of the NKBA and has been there for a number of years and has served in some form of committee or similar role. You want to find someone that has credentials and has been in the business for 10 or more years. Almost every trade is involved in a kitchen remodel. You need cabinet builders. You need skilled carpenters. You need people to do countertops, tile, stone and flooring. You need electricians and plumbers.
There is no one jack-of-all trades, so it’s very important to find an organization that could be able to support and execute these kinds of projects. When you’re dealing with kitchen remodels, you’re dealing with engineering issues, cabinetry, appliances, retrofit issues for any of the reconstruction as it relates to other rooms, integration of flooring to other floor spaces, and lighting. There’s a lot and various things that someone needs to understand other than space planning. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE HOMEOWNERS TO ENSURE THEIR KITCHEN IS EFFICIENT, WELL-PLANNED AND FITS THEIR BUDGET? I would always seek someone with certifications and credentials, look at their body of work and look at their reviews as well. I would also talk to at least two-to-three clients that have had recent work done by the company. And make sure that you define the responsibilities of the company, too. Some companies would say, “Hey I’m not responsible for the electrician, or I’m not responsible for another element of the work.” You want someone that’s going to effectively manage the entire project and not point fingers at another contractor.

new year usually brings a desire for change, and for many homeowners that feeling of starting new begins in one of the most used spaces in the house: the bathroom. Bathroom remodels have become less about simple fixes and more about creating a space that combines comfort, modern design and accessibility. House & Home spoke with a couple of industry experts to gain insight about the modern amenities being featured in new bathroom remodels and how they’ve been evolving over the years.

PERSONALIZED SPACES One of the most noticeable trends in recent years are spa-inspired features, making bathrooms feel more personalized for homeowners. Large, walk-in showers have replaced the traditional tubs in homes, creating a more open and modern feel. Rainfall and handheld showerheads are alternatives that turn daily routines into something more relaxing and accessible. “Bathrooms really have taken on more personalized visions that don’t necessarily have to relate to other traditional elements within a home,” David Cerami, president of HomeTech Renovations, says. “We see a lot of bathrooms that are taking on much more European and spa-like elements within the space.” “When it comes to master suites, people are looking for more room in the bathroom and willing to take less room in the bedroom. Homeowners want to make the bathroom more of a place to relax and get some quiet and peace of mind,” says Robert Walker, owner of Under Construction Builders LLC. Other personalized features being installed are ones that are built for accessibility to ensure easy access for homeowners of all mobility and ages. “Bidet seats are coming on strong, and you see far more showers than tubs, especially in the master primary bathroom,” says Dennis Gehman, co-founder and president of Gehman Design Remodeling. “If there’s enough space maybe there’s a tub, but larger showers with the seat [are the most popular]. I don’t think most people are thinking necessarily about sitting, but for women shaving their legs or us men washing our feet, handheld showerheads with a long enough hose that it can comfortably reach the seat [are preferred]. Not to mention that if somebody’s back is bothering them they can still shower. The handheld is much easier for cleaning your shower, too.”

NEW YEAR, NEW BATHROOM ADDED FEATURES Modern amenities are also altering convenience in bathroom remodels, with storage being one of the top priorities for homeowners. “Probably the request we hear the most is storage. Whether that’s cabinets, linen cabinetry, even floating shelves are pretty popular these days. We are also hearing a request for more drawers than doors in the cabinets,” says Gehman.
Heated floors, once considered a luxury, are now a common upgrade, especially for the colder weather. “We are installing more heated bathroom floors due to the ease of the install factored with costs coming down. This was a pure luxury item prior and now fits in most budgets,” says Steven Matteo, co-owner, of Matteo Family Kitchens & Flooring. Smart mirrors with built-in lighting and even touch-screen displays help improve both function and ambiance in new bathroom remodels. “We are using lighted medicine cabinets

more often as more storage is always a necessity. The look of the modern medicine cabinets is superior to the look of the matching cabinet style ones offered that can date the project before it starts.” Matteo continues.
NEW ADVANCEMENTS Just like everyday routines, technology continues to play an important role in bathroom renovations as well. Smart toilets with features such as heated seats, automatic lids and high-tech systems are becoming more known. Some remodels even include voice-activated
controls for lighting or temperature. These upgrades often come with efficiency, as modern fixtures are designed to reduce water and energy use without delaying its high-quality performance. For example, Matteo says, “Exhaust fans that automatically turn on when humidity levels rise and stay on until levels lower. Moen and Kohler also offer smart showers, where you turn the shower on before you enter the bathroom and have the water temperature set at the most perfect setting.” Storage and organization are other focuses of new bathroom designs. Custom cabinetry

and towel bars help reduce mess while increasing space in a homeowners bathroom. “You put towel bar warmers in, they can be towel bars, they could be warming drawers,” says Cerami. “When you get out of the shower and you wrap yourself in a warm towel or warm robe—what a nice thing that is. Sometimes TV and computers can be integrated within medicine cabinets, believe it or not.”
MODERN COLOR OPTIONS Materials and finishes in modern remodels present a mix of style and stability. Frameless
glass, porcelain tiles and earth tones are some of the choices homeowners gravitate towards that don’t overwhelm their bathrooms. These choices create a modern look, making the renovation a long-term investment for homeowners. “Vanities in bathrooms should always be made of all wood. Plywood boxes with real wood fronts; this will help hold up in most steamy rooms,” Matteo says. “For vanities we have seen a lot of live edge tops with sconce or pendant lights at eye level for better lighting,” says Walker. “Black and gold are also coming back, with

folks incorporating them into the color scheme and fixture finish.” The size of tiles also matters when selecting the color palette. “Flavors of white are still strong. We are also hearing more and more people are tired of granites, so if it is tile, it’s bigger tile with smaller grout,” says Gehman. Walker has seen similar requests with clients looking for big, impressive curbless showers that display large porcelain or marble slabs for the shower walls and minimal grout lines.

“We do advise homeowners that marble will need to be resealed on a yearly basis to prevent water infiltration and possible staining,” he adds. A new bathroom remodel isn’t just about updating what’s already outdated. It’s about changing the space to better fit the current modern styles by adding comfort, technology and accessibility.
