he modern Shore kitchen has grown from seashell accents, navy cabinetry and overtly aquatic details. Today, this coastal vibe is lighter, warmer and more relaxed, with natural materials, soft color palettes and design details that make a vacation home feel both beautiful and easy to live in. To learn more about how kitchens down the Shore have evolved, House and Home spoke with local experts who shared what’s trending. LIGHT, BRIGHT AND NATURAL

The mix of painted cabinetry and natural wood is helping define the current coastal kitchen. Rather than relying on traditional beach-inspired colors, homeowners are creating a sense of the Shore through texture, light and warmth. “White cabinets and very natural light wood tones are what people are going for,” says Steve Matteo, co-owner of Matteo Family Kitchens & Flooring Inc. “We’re doing a lot of mixing, where we do white cabinets or white paint. White oak is very popular right now—that texture and a very light wood. We are seeing different islands and floating shelves just to bring that degree of warm tone into the project.” The result is a kitchen that feels connected to its surroundings without becoming overwhelmed. Soft greens and blues can help with this, subtly referencing water, while creams and light wood tones keep the overall space feeling relaxed. “A lot of people go with lighter tones,” Heather McNamara-Witt, owner and lead designer at Fine Finish Design, says. “This is usually wood tones, creams, green and light blues—like the ocean.”

COUNTERTOPS MADE FOR CONVENIENCE

For a vacation home, durability and ease of maintenance can be just as important as appearance. Quartz continues to be the leading choice, allowing a practical surface that works with the lighter cabinetry in these kitchens. “The quartz countertop is still the majority of what we’re doing because people don’t want to have to worry about any type of sealing or maintenance with a natural stone or with real granite or marble,” Matteo states. “If they’re doing white cabinets, you still see white quartz tops, but in HouseMagazine.com

the veining and movement of the countertop we’re seeing more earth tones like a tan or light beige tone, which pulls out the color of the hardwood floor.” This subtle movement keeps an allwhite kitchen from feeling flat, while introducing warmer tones that connect the

16

countertop to the rest of the environment. “People usually go with quartz because it’s a very durable product,” McNamara-Witt says. “Sometimes they’ll pick something that has veining in it that matches the color of the cabinetry, but can also go with a natural quartzite that has blues and greens to go with the coastal vibe.”

LIGHTING WITH MORE PERSONALITY

Open-concept living has always been important in Shore homes, where the kitchen serves as the center of the gathering area. With kitchens, dining and family rooms connecting together, lighting becomes an opportunity to enhance the kitchen, adding more personality. “What you see is recessed lighting in the majority of the house, but using it over the island, there’s a type of larger, focused piece,” mentions Matteo. “This can be a circular glass ball, wood tones and woodstyle pendant lights going down—a much

more coastal feel, beachy feel versus what you would do at your [primary] home.” The larger fixture over the island can become a visual focal point, particularly in an open space. Glass, woven materials and natural wood tones add range, while maintaining the relaxing Shore style. “Things with milky opal glass are a great option,” McNamara-Witt suggests. “Any large woven-type fixtures are good with pendants, like woven rattan pendants—those are usually popular.”

SOFT COLOR AND UNEXPECTED DETAILS

When it comes to adding personality, the modern Shore kitchen is embracing color in calmer, more sophisticated ways. Tile options are used that are accompanied by the overall feel of the kitchen, remaining classy and Shore-like. “When you’re doing your house, people want things to be blendy, be something timeless so 10 years down the road, they’re ready to sell,” Matteo says. “When you go down the Shore, you will see the tile man-

ufacturers coming out with coral tones, light blue and sagey colors—very soft tones.” These colors can appear in backsplashes, tilework or smaller accents, bringing color into the kitchen without overwhelming the area, while leaving room for texture and architectural options. “Fluted wood in the island is popular as well as arched cabinets,” McNamara-Witt says. “For wood mantles, driftwood is a go-to for custom built-ins and fireplace mantles.

Glass mosaic backsplashes and a statement range hood are also very nice for a Shore house.” The modern coastal kitchen is less about recreating the beach indoors and more about capturing the feeling of being there—bright, natural and comfortable. Light cabinetry, warm wood, durable countertops, oversized lighting and coastal colors create spaces that are created for gathering and, just as importantly, designed to last.

Protecting the Place You Call Home FOR NEARLY FOUR DECADES, EMMONS ROOFING & SIDING HAS HELPED HOMEOWNERS PROTECT AND IMPROVE THEIR HOMES WITH QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP, TRUSTED PRODUCTS AND A COMMITMENT TO STANDING BEHIND EVERY PROJECT.

A

t the Jersey Shore, a home is more than a place to live. It may be where generations of a family spend their summers, a year-round residence just blocks from the ocean, or an investment that has become part of a family’s story. And when it comes to protecting that home, few things matter more than the roof and exterior. For nearly four decades, Emmons Roofing & Siding has helped homeowners throughout South Jersey, the Jersey Shore and Southeastern Pennsylvania protect their homes with quality roofing, siding, windows, doors and exterior improvements. Founded in 1989, Emmons began as a family-owned exterior remodeling company. While the company has grown considerably over the years, its approach remains simple: Do quality work, communicate with the homeowner and stand behind the finished product. BUILT FOR THE JERSEY SHORE Homes along the coast face conditions that can be especially demanding on exterior building materials. Wind-driven rain, summer storms, salt air, intense sun and seasonal temperature changes all take their toll. That’s why the Emmons team looks beyond simply replacing shingles or siding. Every project begins with an evaluation of the home’s existing exterior and a conversation with the homeowner about their concerns, goals and long-term plans for the property. “We don’t want to just sell someone a roof or siding,” says Matthew Kelly, owner of Emmons. “We want to understand the house, identify what it needs and give the homeowner a solution that’s going to protect their investment for years to come.” That philosophy extends from proper ventilation and flashing details on a roofing project to water management, insulation and

HouseMagazine.com

installation details behind a new siding system. ROOFING BACKED BY EXPERIENCE A new roof is one of the largest investments most homeowners will make in their property, and choosing the right contractor can be just as important as choosing the roofing material itself. Emmons is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, an elite designation held by fewer than 1% of roofing contractors nationwide. The designation reflects the company’s commitment to professional installation, customer service and manufacturer standards. It also allows Emmons to offer some of Owens Corning’s strongest warranty protection, including options that cover both roofing materials and the contractor’s workmanship. “We’ve been doing this since 1989, and we’re going to be here after the job is finished,” Kelly says. “If one of our customers ever has a problem, we want them to call us. Standing behind the work has always been a huge part of who we are.”

A LOCAL NAME YOU CAN TRUST Over the years, Emmons has completed thousands of projects throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. But despite that growth, the company remains family owned and locally operated. “My name is attached to this company, and we live and work in the same communities as our customers,” Kelly says. “We’re not an out-of-state company that comes into town after a storm and disappears. We want to be the contractor someone calls today— and the company their family calls 10 or 20 years from now.” That long-term approach has helped Emmons build much of its business through referrals and repeat customers. Homeowners who first called Emmons for a roof often return years later for siding, windows, doors or remodeling—and frequently recommend the company to friends, neighbors and family. PROTECTING YOUR HOME FOR THE YEARS AHEAD Whether it’s a year-round residence or the Shore house where a family spends its summers, a home deserves an exterior built to withstand the elements and a contractor willing to stand behind it. For Emmons Roofing & Siding, that’s what nearly four decades in business has been about: Quality you can see. A name you can trust.

MORE THAN JUST A NEW EXTERIOR New siding can completely transform the appearance of a home, but today’s exterior systems can also improve durability, weather protection and energy efficiency. Emmons works with homeowners to select siding styles, colors, trim and exterior details that complement the architecture of the home while providing the performance needed for the Shore environment. And because Emmons also installs roofing, windows, doors, gutters and other exterior components, homeowners can work with one experienced team to coordiWilliamstown & Cherry Hill, N.J. nate the entire exterior rather than Schedule your complimentary exterior consultation managing multiple contractors. ITH THE CONSTANT BUILDING OF NEW HOMES, and renovations on existing ones at the Jersey Shore, more homeowners are insisting on having a swimming pool. We reached out to Bryan Hull of Del Val Pools & Spas, who builds pools throughout the tri-state area and is well known for their expertise in constructing and engineering pools at the Jersey Shore, to find out more about the latest trends. The Hull family has been building custom gunite pools for three generations and are known for high-quality, durable pools that transform a backyard to a private oasis. WHY HAVE SWIMMING POOLS BECOME A “MUST HAVE” AT THE JERSEY SHORE?

I grew up thinking the beach was one of the greatest places on earth. Sand, waves salty breezes Bryan Hull, and were all I needed. It’s Partner different now. The home building of the last 50 years has increased the density of people in the small coastal areas. It is more crowded. Having a swimming pool takes your Shore experience to a whole new level. It’s a lifestyle upgrade that allows you to enjoy the sun and the water without worrying about beach space, tides or lunches. It’s your

own personal retreat at the Shore and offers the best of both worlds with a lot more convenience. From quiet morning swims to evening pool parties, your pool becomes the heart of your Shore home. It’s a place to unwind, connect with loved ones and create lasting memories without ever leaving your property. A swimming pool also significantly increases your home’s value and becomes the hub for family memories. You can use the pool at night, and a heated pool extends the swimming season by a few months. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES WHEN BUILDING A POOL AT THE SHORE?

This is where you need an experienced pool builder who is accustomed to construction along the coast. There is a big

difference in building pools in the center of the state versus on a barrier island of sand which has shifted over history before residential development. For starters, you never know what you’re going to find when you dig. A lot of the land at the Jersey shore is fill, and that fill can include old storm debris such as cars, boats and older home foundations. We encounter lots of “surprises” when building pools at the Shore. We are used to it! Del Val Pools & Spas is well known for building pools which are “Sandyproof.” This term comes from the carnage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012 which lifted older pools out of the ground and out to sea. We build our pools connected to pilings driven deep into the sand and tied to a reinforced rebar framework and a deep keel which is further strengthened by a custom crafted gunite shell. We overconstruct our pools for strength and durability, and three generations of my family have been building pools. There is a lot to be said for that kind of experience. HOW DOES THAT EXPERIENCE BENEFIT THE HOMEOWNER?

We have been building pools for decades— more than I care to count. We are constantly learning, adapting and improving. Styles change, technologies advance and building concepts progress. Del Val Pools & Spas is consistently at the forefront of these changes and year after year we have received awards and recognition in a variety of “Best of” categories. A pool is homeowner’s vision and it all starts with a conversation. If you want to talk about pools at the Jersey shore, reach out to me directly: Bryan@DelValPools.net. HouseMagazine.com

Evergreen Pros specializes in using products from top brands like Cambridge, Techo-Bloc and Belgard pavers, as well as the International Porcelain Company, the latter of which is really revolutionizing the outdoor design area with their blend of durability and sophistication. “They’re crafted from dense, highquality porcelain and offer an exceptional level of resistance to weathering, staining and heavy foot traffic, making them an ideal choice for patios, walkways and driveways,” says Erman.

all is the perfect time to gather with friends and family as the cooler temperatures are a welcomed reprieve from the scorching summer months. As the fall foliage begins to take shape, it’s also the right time to transform your outdoor living areas into seasonallyappropriate masterpieces. Locally, Evergreen Pros is an industry leader thanks to its years of expertise and innovation. The company’s highly skilled team of expert landscapers and designers keep up on the latest trends and techniques, ensuring clients their living spaces are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also fully functional. What’s more, Evergreen Pros does not take a one-size-fits-all approach, making sure each individual client’s needs and desires are the focal point of every project. “Our goal is to make every outdoor space a reflection of our client’s vision while meeting any unique needs and preferences,” says Nick Erman, president. “No one wants to call multiple contractors to complete a project, so we make sure to provide everything from large-scale endeavors like the installation of irrigation and pavers to building an entire pool and outdoor kitchen, to the smaller details like landscaping and fencing.” HouseMagazine.com

Evergreen Pros also takes pride in being comprehensive backyard specialists that are heavily involved every step of the way, from the initial design concept to the final site cleanup. That attention to detail shines through, allowing them to not only meet client expectations, but exceed them. “When it comes time to conceptualize a project, we use SketchUp, a 3D modeling software that allows our design team to create and manipulate designs of pools, outdoor kitchens, paver patios and many other types of projects,” shares Erman. “This sort of tool really helps align our client’s vision with what is obtainable and helps the process to have clear expectations.”

Development and Education

Continuing education is a big part of what makes Evergreen Pros successful as it allows the team to update their knowledge, enhance their skills and be up to date on the latest safety standards. “We’re very much up on today’s building techniques with installing pavers, pools and porcelain, all the way to building fireplaces, fire pits and everything else. As the temperatures cool and you look to maximize your time spent outdoors, some of the more popular ways to transform your yard into a cozy retreat includes addition of comfortable seating, warm blankets and a fire pit for evenings spent under the stars. “Fire pits are a great addition to your outdoor space, especially during the fall. And of course, outdoor kitchens are always a favorite, from season to season, but the appeal of having more usable outdoor entertaining space during the holiday months is a big draw for a lot of homeowners,” Erman says. Incorporating seasonal elements like pumpkins, cabbage and mums to enhance the fall atmosphere, while considering adding soft outdoor lighting can help extend the enjoyment of your space into the early evenings. Whether you’re hosting a harvest gathering or simply savoring a quiet moment with a hot beverage, your outdoor area can become a delightful extension of your home, reflecting the rich colors and serene mood of the season.

Transforming Spaces, One Yard at a Time

The Importance of Fall Maintenance

TEMPERATURES ARE ALREADY STARTING TO COOL DOWN, SO JAMMER DOORS IS PREPARED TO HELP WITH HOME MAINTENANCE AND A SEASONAL SALE. By Abigail Twiford

As

summer turns into fall and temperatures continue to drop through winter, homeowners have to consider the maintenance, replacements and upgrades that need to be made throughout the house to prepare for cold weather, snow, wind and all of the other strains the chilly climate brings for half the year. The vast majority of these improvements needed to get ready for a colder, damper and harsher season than what the summer has to offer are related to the comfort of the home’s inhabitants and energy efficiency in keeping the home warm despite the most frigid conditions going on outside. One of the biggest elements of the home that needs to be considered for maintenance at this time is the garage door and its opener, with Jammer Doors being a prime provider for this necessary maintenance throughout the area. “The biggest [priority] is preparing for the cold weather. Make sure that you’re checking the alignment of the door and checking the tracks of it so that the door opens and closes properly. That’s important for making sure that there’s no issues with the cold coming in once the weather start getting colder,” says Sarah Jammer, legal compliance director for Jammer Doors. The main concerns for fall maintenance

with garage door openers are functionality and safety, which means ensuring that the photo eyes on operators are clean and clear of leaves and debris, which can disrupt the opening and closing of the door. Besides ensuring everything opens and closes properly to keep out drafts and improve energy efficiency, safety is a main concern, as cold weather can exacerbate existing issues within the door’s structures. The operator’s track needs to be inspected by the homeowner or a professional to check for dents, damage or to see if the track needs to be lubricated to be readied for the winter ahead. “A lot of times fall and winter can be a busier season in the Northeast because of the snow and the change in temperature that can cause a lot of spring and cable breaks if they're not properly taken care of, so it's just always a great time to make sure that they’re up to date and there’s no issues with it. That’s one of the reasons why fall maintenance is really important,” Jammer says. Besides the garage, the house’s other doors and windows should also be checked for any issues, such as whether the windows lock properly. “The main thing, especially in the Northeast, is checking and preparing for colder weather, so older windows might have issues

JAMMER DOORS HouseMagazine.com

with retaining heat and that will impact energy efficiency,” Jammer says. Entrance doors at the front, back and side of the house should also be inspected for their own alignments to make sure there are no gaps between each door and its jamb, which could let in cold drafts and decrease the comfort of those within the home. “That way it really focuses on retaining that energy efficiency and helping with heat retention when it comes to wintertime,” Jammer says. As Jammer Doors knows that maintenance and replacements for different door and window parts and features are needed at this time of year, the company is holding a fall sale, which begins on Sept. 26 and ends Oct. 6. The sale covers their Provia and Raynor products, offering a 15% discount on entrance, garage and slider doors, and windows, though operators and storm doors are excluded from the sale. “We provide preventative maintenance to come out and just double check to make sure everything's operating smoothly. And then, if there are any issues with their garage door and entrance door, we can provide recommendations. And if they want to move forward with that, they can,” Jammer says.

all in all, the perfect place to relax and unwind. According to Michael and Carrie Robinson, that’s basically the feedback they’re hearing from customers at Townehaus, their high-quality furniture and home design business in Moorestown. “Customers want guest suites that feel like a high-end hotel room—cozy and comfortable, but still luxurious,” the pair explain. “The goal is for friends and family to feel truly at home, whether they’re staying for a weekend or longer.” Typically connected to the main house, guest suites are self-contained living areas fea-

turing a bedroom, private bath, sitting area and oftentimes even a small kitchenette, giving guests access to everything they need without encroaching on household common areas. Investing in a guest suite, whether with renovations or a brand-new addition, doesn’t just bring immediate satisfaction to a homeowner—it’s also a smart choice if selling the home is a possibility down the line. According to Realtor.com, homes with guest suites sell as fast as standard properties at much higher list prices. Of course, this demand is not only based on the extra space—it’s also about the love HouseMagazine.com

and care that’s been put into it. That’s where local home improvement designers, contractors and craftspeople can make a huge difference. Peter Fricano and his team at Seashore Floors in Avalon stay ahead of trends for flooring in all areas of the home, guest suites included. “We are noticing a trend toward natural colors and textures like browns and greens. I’ve also noticed floral print tiles are having a moment which ties into the more nature-inspired look,” Fricano says. “The trend has been for the bedrooms to be done in hardwood with a large area rug bound under the

bed and in front of the nightstands.” The Robinsons have been seeing guest suite styles shift more traditional versus a few years ago, although not fully traditional. Townehaus customers are also seeking softer, warmer neutrals and natural wood tones instead of stark whites or dark finishes. “The goal is a calm, inviting room with finishes that still look good after real use,” Carrie and Michael say. “The pieces that matter most tend to be a comfortable bed with good nightstands, solid storage, a small desk or work surface, and seating that can handle everyday use. Everything else supports those core functions. “The overall direction is high-quality pieces that are built to last, paired with a warm, comfortable atmosphere.” This idea of high-quality comfort goes for bathrooms, too. With whole bathroom renovations in Seashore Floors’ repertoire, Fricano notes larger format tiles and tiling the ceiling as popular picks for a more “spa-like” feel. “In a guest suite, you may want to provide a bench seat and niche in the shower for the weary traveler,” Fricano adds. “Many times, we can do a feature wall, floor to ceiling, on the wet wall in a glass or waterjet mosaic to give the shower extra dimension.” For those ready to transform their guest suite into a hotelquality retreat, Fricano, the Robinsons and a variety of other local experts are ready to bring the plan to fruition. And if the plan isn’t fully formed, they’re ready to help with that, too. At Seashore Floors, customers can expect personal attention and top customer service when they visit the showroom to find the perfect tile, carpet or hardwood for their guest suite. Professionals are on hand to discuss budgets to find the best fit for their needs, and

samples from Seashore Floors’ wide range of products can be brought home. Once the selection process is decided, Fricano personally measures the job to send an estimate for the work. There is the same level of care and attention at Townehaus, where Michael and Carrie say the most important thing they do is listen. “There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to a guest suite, so we take time to understand what each client wants to achieve, how the room will actually be used, and what their budget allows,” the pair explain. If the need is furniture, Townehaus

offers three clear levels to their customers: the go-to Coastal Living collection by Universal, Vanguard Furniture for more finish and fabric options, and fully custom pieces designed with their Amish partners that come in any wood species, stain, size and configuration. “The common thread is quality that still feels approachable, paired with a warm, hotel-like atmosphere that makes every guest feel welcome,” the Robinsons say. Beyond furniture, the Townehaus duo can help design and coordinate the entire guest suite, from paint to wallpaper, lighting to window treatments, and everything in between. The goal, they say, is “never to

create a perfect, untouchable room.” “It’s to create a space that feels like a highend hotel suite but still lives well—where family and friends can actually relax without worrying about the furniture,” Michael and Carrie say. “Quality should support real life, not get in the way of it.”

More Than a Pool Swim-Mor Pools & Spas elevates backyard atmospheres with quality custom designs

by Kristen Dowd

S

wim-Mor Pools & Spas partner and general manager Mike McCool recognizes that there is a lot more that goes into a new pool than there used to be.

“The backyard has transformed over the last 10 years or so away from being just ‘your yard’ and into another room of your home with the same care and detail put into it,” McCool says. “Because of this the design of your pool has become more than just a pool but the focus of the outdoor living room. There is a lot of coordination with creating what a customer’s backyard haven is going to be.” Fortunately, the family-owned South Jersey business is more than up to the challenge of bringing a customer’s backyard pool vision to life. In its 59 years of business, Swim-Mor Pools & Spas has helped to create thousands of backyard paradises throughout the region. And what’s more, they make the process as easy as possible for their customers. “We’re a start-to-finish gunite custom pool company—the design, the build and the service afterward,” McCool says. “We have our own crews that handle the work which helps us control quality and makes the process go smoother.” There are six designers at Swim-Mor Pools & Spas who can help guide customers on a new pool design. The company’s countless photos and 3D drawings can provide inspiration, and the final design is what best suits the backyard, according to McCool. “Size, setbacks, elevations. We’re here to help you work through that,” he says.

HouseMagazine.com

Finding the right pool

“The first step is to give us a call. From there we’ll set up an appointment to come out to your home,” McCool says. “That way we can see all the aspects of the property. What the contours of the yard are. What the access is like. Even the best location based on where the sun rises and sets.” The timeline to get started is largely based on the homeowner and how decisive they are, McCool adds. Once everything is confirmed, things move to contract and Swim-Mor Pools & Spas starts working on permits. “Time is of the essence. Permits can take from two weeks to several months, all depending on the municipality,” McCool says.

Pool popularity

“other than the increased popularity of adding more bells and whistles to the pool.” Natural stone is popular for the coping along the pool’s edge, McCool says, as well as darker finishes in the pool. A majority of SwimMor Pools & Spa customers are using a salt sanitation system and automated controls in their new pools, as well as choosing to add water features—waterfalls, fountains, deck jets and plenty more. The company also offers many in- pool fixtures for lounging—bar stools and benches that can tie into your outdoor kitchen or can run inside the pool, along with table areas, sundecks for your lounge chairs and custom fire features. Color LED lighting packages come with every pool, too. The majority of customers also choose elements to lengthen their pool-enjoying season, such as heaters and spas. “It will extend your pool season by a few months,” McCool says.

Why Swim-Mor Pools & Spas?

Being a local family-owned independent business makes Swim-Mor Pools & Spas a smart choice for customers, according to McCool. “We’re not national. We’re not a franchise. And we do not try to sell everything. Our expertise has been building custom gunite pools for 59 years and that’s what we focus on,” he says. Save for a few aspects that are legally required to be outsourced to independent licensed contractors, Swim-Mor Pools & Spas uses all of their own crews for the pool construction, which McCool says is unique for the pool business. In addition to building new pools, SwimMor Pools & Spas also specializes in renovating gunite pools. The experienced team can handle everything from your standard renovation of replacing your coping, tile and plaster finish, to adding features such as raised water features, sun decks, and even spas that were not originally built with the pool. McCool says, “Even though your pool may not have originally been built with the more current popular features doesn’t mean that Swim-Mor cannot add them now.” The 2026 pool season is already underway for the business, which thanks to the mild winter meant they were able to start construction early. Pool openings and service will ramp up from mid-April to Memorial Day. But, for those looking to add a pool to their backyard this summer, it’s not too late. “We’re still building for this year. We’re still selling for this summer,” McCool says. “But don’t waste time. Get in!”

Prior to March 2020, business was strong for Swim-Mor Pools & Spa. That was only boosted when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the region. “The pool business was never busier than it was in COVID,” McCool says. “The lockdowns forced people to stay at home and they immediately focused on the backyard.” Although that business boom has settled down a bit, things are still busy. But pool trends, according to McCool, have held fairly steady. Hampton-style pools have long been a customer favorite, but equally popular are the freeform designs, which can be customized to fit into any backyard environment. “Through COVID there have not been many Mount Ephraim | Northfield | Millstone Township significant changes in the industry,” McCool says, (848) 301-2988 | SwimMor.com
