FOR WEDDINGS LARGE OR SMALL, CASUAL OR BLACK-TIE, HUDSON’S DETROIT IS THE ULTIMATE IN ACCOMMODATIONS
written by will reaume
WHEN THE original downtown Detroit
J.L. Hudson’s was still the pinnacle of the retail experience, people would come from all over Michigan to shop. The sixthfloor bridal salon was the place to go for wedding dresses, veils, shoes, and makeup — in other words, a one-stop shopping destination. Wedding season is still a big deal at Hudson’s Detroit, but instead of helping before the wedding, the focus is now on making the big day extra special for the happy couple.
The Department at Hudson’s Detroit offers couples the glamour of a downtown Detroit venue for their wedding and reception, with versatility to spare. Its 56,000 square feet of event space spans three floors, with

five customizable areas for up to 2,000 guests.
Each hall can be separated by guillotine doors, providing ample room for grand reveals and surprise entrances. The doors can also create a more intimate space for guests to enjoy the special day together.
Wedding day amenities at The Department are designed to take as much off the party’s plate as possible. Forte Belanger, the venue’s exclusive food and beverage provider, can handle all reception needs, from building a custom menu to arranging table decor and flatware procurement. The team will also develop a craft cocktail selection, giving guests a chance to try the couple’s
favorite drink, or stick to the classic crowd-pleasers.
Unlike the original J.L. Hudson’s department store, there’s no shortage of balcony views at The Department, with five covered balconies on the second floor. Each one makes the perfect backdrop for solo shots and family photos. The largest balcony is in Woodward Hall, stretching an entire block, and connects to Bowtie Hall for an easy transition space.
And while the amenities aren’t identical to its predecessor’s, The Department still does what J.L. Hudson’s prided itself on — making the most important moments even more spectacular.

HAIRSTYLIST Valerie VanSlambrouck’s first date with her fiancé, Joseph Shy of Warren, almost 10 years ago was certainly memorable.
“I was so distracted by him; I walked into a glass door!” the Berkley resident recalls of their date at a bowling alley. After getting past the initial giddiness,
written by jack thomas
the two quickly found they had much in common, and one thing they love to do together is travel. They have been around the U.S. and visited 13 countries in total. But their ultimate “bucket list” trip — one that Valerie had dreamed of since she was young — took place in October 2025. On an EF Ultimate Break trip, they traveled to
Egypt. And on Oct. 11, in front of the Giza pyramids, Joseph proposed.
“We had flying dress photos done, went on a hot air balloon, snorkeled in the Red Sea, rode camels,” says Valerie. “I couldn’t have asked for a better proposal or trip.”
With such an elaborate proposal, we can’t wait to hear about the honeymoon.

We took a trip to New York City in October 2025 to get a front-row look at the top bridal designers’ newest collections and gather insights from leading designers and other industry professionals

Flying from Detroit to New York for my first-ever New York Bridal Fashion Week felt surreal. I have always loved fashion, especially the production of a runway show, but nothing compared to taking my seat in the front row of each presentation and watching the models step onto the runway. From that close, everything was mesmerizing, from the details of the gowns as they drifted past me to the way the silhouettes changed shape before my eyes.
Like at New York Fashion Week, designers were there to set the tone for the season. Some of the collections I saw embraced a Renaissance revival, blending square necklines, soft corsetry, and rich embroidery with modern structure. Just as unforgettable were the nontraditional looks, from black tulle and sculptural minis to crisp bridal suiting.
As you flip through the next few pages, you’ll see some of what I experienced up close, along with insights from industry professionals I met along the way.

“I feel like there’s been a lot of celebration this season, like the Gilded Age. A lot of look-backs to baroque styling, a lot of old lace ornamentations in bridal fashion, which I think is a turn from the more modern styles we were seeing.”
JEANNENE JONES-RUPERT WEDDING PLANNER

“I love when brides go ‘anti-bride’ — when they go out of the norm of white dresses and choose something bold, like the black dress we saw today. It just makes it more playful and adds a creativity to the wedding that you just can’t get with a white dress.”
WEDDING
PLANNER
CAROL RODRIGUEZ
FROM PUERTO RICO

With each made-to-order look, Alexandra Grecco brought interesting twists to the runway. Designs pushed industry norms to their limits with bralette tops (pictured on page 46), sheer gowns, and feminine suits in one of the most experimental collections of the season.

“She’s a lot bolder than other designers. You know there’s beading, and then there’s beading ... Her bride is someone who dares to stand out, who dares to be different. She’s not demure. She’s ‘I’m here, and I’m here to stand out, baby.’”
H ARRIETTE COLE AUTHOR OF JUMPING THE BROOM

“I try to define outside-of-the-box thinking. Still romantic and feminine, and still traditional, but with a modern twist ... I dream in color. But bridal you have to really get out there to make it more exaggerated because it’s all white.”
NARDOS IMA M FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF NARDOS

“I’m ecstatic that Katie and Hera are incorporating curve models and curve sizes in haute bridal couture. We need to see more of this in the industry.”

“You can see in our dresses, they are not overpowered by sparkles; they’re not overpowered by beading. But they are architecturally designed with some intricate details and are really well made. The bride will shine through our gowns.”
KATIE YEUNG DESIGNER HERA COUTURE, NEW ZEALAND

LOOKING FOR A UNIQUE HONEYMOON DESTINATON? ANY OF THESE FIVE EUROPEAN CASTLES WILL APPEAL TO THE INQUISITIVE COUPLE LOOKING FOR ROMANCE, ADVENTURE, AND MORE THAN A TASTE OF HISTORY.

Castelul Corvinilor, or Corvin Castle, seems plucked straight from the pages of a medieval epic. Nestled amid the rolling mist-shrouded hills of Transylvania, this Gothic masterpiece evokes a blend of foreboding grandeur and otherworldly charm. Begun in 1446 under the command of John Hunyadi (known in Romanian as “Ioan of Hunedoara”), the castle transformed an early Renaissance stronghold into a feat of defensive ingenuity. Towering double walls, a dramatic drawbridge, and an array of rectangular and circular towers fortified it against even the most advanced weaponry of the era. The castle’s imposing architecture remains a testament to Hunyadi’s strategic prowess and ambition.
Beyond its austere exterior, Corvin Castle reveals a more opulent and storied interior. Clad in gleaming marble, the Diet Hall served as a venue for elaborate receptions; the Knights’ Hall hosted feasts fit for nobility. For those fascinated with darker tales, the dungeon and torture chamber offer chilling insights into medieval justice, while the infamous “bear pit” is steeped in grisly legend. Open to visitors year-round, the castle invites modern-day explorers to immerse themselves in its history. Special rooms are available for private hire, and each summer’s Medieval Festival brings knights, jousting, and pageantry to life, making Corvin Castle a vibrant celebration of the past. castelulcorvinilor.ro

Located just outside of Paris, the 17th-century Château de Vaux-leVicomte is a dazzling precursor to the grandeur of Versailles. Commissioned in 1658 by Nicolas Fouquet (Louis XIV’s superintendent of finance), this domedroof estate epitomizes harmony between architecture, interior design, and landscaping. Fouquet spared no expense in hiring Louis Le Vau, Charles Le Brun, and André Le Nôtre, the creative trio later tasked by Louis XIV to design Versailles itself. Ironically, the château’s magnificence contributed to Fouquet’s downfall, as his lavish expenditures led to his arrest and imprisonment.
Though it was Versailles that became an iconic symbol of France, Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte rivals its contemporary as the foremost example of 17th-century French architecture and landscape design. Unlike the archetypal medieval and Renaissance châteaux found in regions like Périgord or Languedoc, Vaux-le-Vicomte does not have a moat or battlements. Despite the “castle” name, Vaux-le-Vicomte is in fact an unfortified palace, built long after the period of true castles. The French word for castle, “château,” was carried through the ages to have a broader meaning that incorporated palaces and mansions of later centuries. In this vein, many French châteaux do not fit the classic mold of their European peers.
Run today as France’s largest private historic property, Château de Vaux-leVicomte is open to the public from spring to early fall (in 2026, March 14 to Nov. 1) and again during select days of the holiday season. On Saturdays from May 16 to Sept. 26, the estate will host weekly Candlelit Evenings, when the palace will be illuminated by thousands of candles. Patrons have the option of dining next to the twinkling gardens at the estate’s Les Charmilles restaurant, which is open exclusively on these evenings. Pro tip: Book months in advance.

Perched within the mouth of a cliffside cave, Predjama Castle defies expectations as much as gravity.
Overlooking Slovenia’s River Lokva, this four-story marvel intertwines natural formations and human craftsmanship in a way few castles can claim.
Its lore is inseparable from Erazem Lueger, a 15th-century knight famed for his daring exploits and Robin Hood–like defiance of authority.
Despite a prolonged siege by Austrian forces during the Austrian-Hungarian War, the knight outwitted his enemies
through a concealed passage within the cave system, enabling him to secure supplies and continue his rebellious escapades — until betrayal revealed a fatal vulnerability: the toilet. According to legend, his garderobe (a medievalera toilet) was one of the castle’s few structural weak points, and it was there that he met his infamous end after a confidante alerted enemy forces of his whereabouts.
Rebuilt in 1570 with Renaissance refinement, Predjama Castle retained its fortress roots while adopting a
more regal character. Nowadays, visitors can explore the castle’s richly atmospheric interiors as well as sections of the extensive cave system beneath it, which extends more than eight miles. For the adventurous, guided tours delve into Erazem’s secret passage or the labyrinthine Eastern Passages, a trek not for the fainthearted or claustrophobic. The castle is open year-round, though cave access is seasonal to protect its resident bat colonies. postojnska-jama.eu

Rising from the tranquil waters of Lake Galvé, Trakai Island Castle is a fairy tale of medieval architecture set against the backdrop of Lithuania’s natural beauty. Originally constructed in the 14th century as a strategic partner to Grand Duke Kęstutis’s mainland fortress, the castle reached its zenith under the rule of Vytautas the Great. By the late 14th century, this red-brick Gothic stronghold featured a six-story donjon surrounded by its own protective moat — a defense innovation that set it apart.
The castle’s military prominence peaked during the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, when Vytautas’s forces, allied
with Poland, achieved a decisive victory against the Teutonic Knights. Following this pivotal moment, Trakai Island Castle shifted from a military bastion to a luxurious ducal residence, adorned with impressive frescoes and intricate detailing that reflected its newfound role. Today, Trakai Island Castle enchants visitors year-round, though it’s particularly lively in the summer, when medieval festivals and open-air concerts fill its courtyards. The serene beauty of the island and its compelling past make it a must-see destination for history enthusiasts and travelers alike.

Situated near the English-Scottish border, Caerlaverock Castle is a striking testament to medieval resilience and ingenuity. Its triangular layout, unique in Britain, is both a defensive and architectural anomaly, featuring a wide moat, twin-towered gatehouse, and imposing curtain walls. Built in the 13th century, the castle’s tumultuous history includes multiple sieges as it changed hands between England and Scotland over the centuries. Edward I famously captured it in 1300, though the Maxwell family (its enduring Scottish lords) reclaimed it time and again until 1640, when it was abandoned as a military stronghold.
Caerlaverock’s history is not merely one of warfare. The Maxwells’ personal chronicles tell a colorful tale of familial rivalries, political intrigue, and murder, adding depth to the castle’s already dramatic legacy. Today, its ruins offer visitors a chance to wander through history, marveling at its rare trilateral design and evocative surroundings. Open year-round, Caerlaverock is a poignant reminder of Scotland’s storied past, inviting exploration and reflection. historicenvironment.scot

“This shoot was inspired by pattern-mixing maximalist design,” says Aimee Paquin, owner and creative director of Modernly Events. “We paired several patterns, shapes, and textures with bright pastel and neon colors to imagine what a traditional spring wedding could look like.”

“Chrome is trending for 2026 weddings,” says Paquin. “Polished silver flatware and candlesticks are one way to incorporate this trend.”

“Pattern mixing can be scary!” says Paquin. “One way to make it feel cohesive is choosing a color, like lime green, that shows up in both the tablecloth and napkins.”

“The wavy shape was a unifying design element that we carried through the linens, menus, centerpieces, florals, cakes, and bridal attire,” says Paquin.

Third-generation family business offers full-service event planning
The Bellisario family operates its floral and special events business out of a 10,000-square-foot warehouse and showroom in Eastpointe, but in the late 1940s, the floral shop was in Grandma’s basement on Detroit’s east side.
“My dad, Peter Bellisario, started a floral business in the house he lived in when he was 17. He had two refrigerators and went door-to-door to sell and book weddings,” says Ralph Bellisario, who operates Bellisario Florist along with his mother, Lorraine; his niece Jennie; his sister Josie; and staff.
Peter and his wife, Lorraine, built the business while raising a family, and more than 75 years later, it is still a family business. “We have second and third generations of families now. My grandfather did flowers for the grandmother’s wedding, then confirmations, graduations, and her daughter’s wedding, and now we are planning her granddaughter’s wedding,” Jennie says. “It’s very satisfying.”
What hasn’t changed at all is the personalized service that’s offered. Ralph and Jennie book every special occasion and oversee every event. Although they have a team of designers and work with the best local vendors, Ralph or Jennie always ensures that a client’s day is perfect.
The only thing that has changed in 75 years is that Bellisario now offers full planning services in addition to being a full-service florist. “When a bride comes to us, we can get the flowers, linens, chairs, tables, fine china, flatware, whatever she needs. There’s no need to go from place to place,” Ralph says.
Jennie says most brides come in with a vision or inspiration — either colors they like or magazine pictures — and Bellisario takes it from there. All that’s needed is the budget to work within, and the work is done.
“A lot of florists and planners have a minimum, but we don’t. We will plan from small to elaborate and keep it within budget,” Ralph says.
Keeping ahead of trends is something the Bellisario family knows customers appreciate. Bellisario will design your event like no other, whether it’s ultramodern, over-the-top luxurious, or the simple elegance of fine china

on wood tables. In addition to weddings, Bellisario is known for its work at corporate events, showers, holiday parties, televised appearances, and the North American International Auto Show. They cover the entire tri-country area and also do many out-of-town destination weddings.
For brides who know exactly what they want, the reviews often sound like this: “I cannot thank you enough for the beautiful flowers you put together for our wedding. I got so many compliments. I really appreciate all the time and effort you took to meet with me, along with emails, texts, and pictures to make sure everything was just right. You went above and beyond, and I will never forget you!” ■

SOME TRADITIONS never go out of style. Located on Broadway across from the Detroit Opera House, Simmons and Clark has been a longtime go-to for local couples taking the special first step toward marriage. The company — which turned 100 last year — has sold over 100,000 engagement rings since first opening its doors.
“Knowing our jewelry is woven into so many love stories across Detroit and beyond is incredibly meaningful to me and my family,” says Michael Simmons, third-generation owner.
In 1925, his grandfather, Fred Simmons, and fellow employee Harry Clark each invested $5,000 and opened Simmons and Clark in a spot that is now the store’s parking lot. Ten years later, they moved next door to 1535 Broadway St., where the business continues today as the oldest full-service fine jewelry store in Detroit. It has survived the Great Depression, recessions, a three-decade downturn in downtown shopping, and the recent pandemic.
