Together, they represent your next vacation destination!

Meet Danielle and Mark

This edition features Danielle and Mark, a couple who moved from Chicago to Grand Haven in search of more space and a home that better fit their lifestyle. Even while planning their move from out of state, they confidently designed their new home from afar, selecting layouts, finishes, and features that matched their routines and personal style.

Throughout the process, they felt supported as they brought their vision to life, creating a warm and functional space in a community where they quickly felt at home. With the help of Eastbrook Homes, their long-distance plans became a beautifully crafted reality.

FRESH IDEAS

You’ll never run out of things to do in the Grand Haven Area. Don’t miss out on the top summer activities, including hitting the farmers markets ripe with delicious produce.

A THRIVING PORT COMMUNITY

Walking the pier is a must for Grand Haven Area visitors and residents alike. The pier — on the Grand River Channel, where the river flows into Lake Michigan — launches an understanding of this picturesque harbor town.

Indigenous peoples were here first. Then came the fur trade, lumbering, shipping, tourism. Today’s harbor, with its many assets, thrives because of business, government, and recreation collaborations.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains the pier, channel, and all things related from its regional headquarters in Grand Haven.

The U.S. Coast Guard, with its station on the Grand River Channel, provides coastal defense, search-and-rescue services, and maritime law enforcement. It’s been in Grand Haven since before it was actually the Coast Guard — the U.S. Life-Saving Service, a Coast Guard predecessor, established a station here in the 1870s. Grand Haven was the first official “Coast Guard City, USA,” designated by an act of Congress in 1998.

The town began honoring the Coast Guard in 1924 with an annual picnic. By 1937, it had become a festival, one that continues to today.

Then, there’s the commercial side. Recreational boating is a staple, to be sure, but jaw-dropping 700-foot freighters carrying construction aggregates also make their way up the Grand River Channel during shipping season, offloading at three active docks just west of U.S. 31. Get a closer look from the boat launch on Harbor Island or follow along with the free phone app MarineTraffic.

As a port community, Grand Haven plays a key role in nurturing the West Michigan economy through business and tourism. Here, Mother Nature’s stunning scenery and strategic geography combine to make the Grand Haven Area truly exceptional.

Seven Communities

GRAND HAVEN

The active beach town of Grand Haven makes an ideal getaway any time of year. Pristine beaches and clear waters set the stage for volleyball, surfing, swimming, fishing, and water sports. Walk along the beach (and boardwalk/ pier), take in the sunsets, and enjoy close-up views of the iconic red lighthouses.

Beyond the sand, enjoy scenic walking and biking trails leading into beautiful parks and nature areas. Stroll the boardwalk from the beach to the downtown area to discover a mix of popular dining spots and new shopping venues. Shop till you drop at the many oneof-a-kind locally owned boutiques, art galleries, and specialty stores.

For adventure, sports, and exercise, hit the links on one of Grand Haven’s renowned golf courses. Navigate inland and

offshore waters for lake trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, perch, pike, coho/king salmon, and steelhead fishing. Kayakers and paddleboarders glide along calm inland lakes and channels.

In autumn, local trails, parks, and woodlands glow with bold golds, oranges, and vibrant reds. In winter, Grand Haven transforms into a wonderland with a sparkling downtown (with ice-free sidewalks thanks to the snowmelt system), snow-laden beaches, and icecovered lighthouses. Outdoor enthusiasts embrace winter hiking, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, fat-tire biking, and ice fishing.

SPRING LAKE

Spring Lake, with its water-related activities, small-town atmosphere, and access to nearby attractions, is the perfect setting for a relaxing yet

activity-filled vacation.

Village Manager Brady Selner describes the ambience as a “small-town vibe filled with great hospitality and a lot of outdoor activities.”

“Tanglefoot Park on the Grand River,” he adds, “is a destination with a park, splash pad, kayak rental and launch, and a rentable pavilion with full-service amenities and more.”

The downtown area exudes small-town charm with its quaint shops, cozy cafés, and delectable restaurants. Savor breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Village Baker, where all of the baked products are made in-house. Fuel Bar + Refuge, with its scratch kitchen and extensive cocktail menu, is also a local favorite.

For recreation, Spring Lake is home to a variety of parks, scenic bike paths, and walking trails. The 15-mile Lakeside Trail stretches along the water’s edge and

community. Marv’s Bark Park is a fenced-in dog park with room for dogs of all sizes to roam and play. Mill Point Park has green spaces for picnics, playground equipment for family fun, and a boat launch.

FERRYSBURG

The tranquil community of Ferrysburg resides on the western shore of Lake Michigan and along the northern side of the Grand River with access to views, nature, and family activities.

Ottawa Sands County Park recently completed an ecological restoration, access improvements, and new amenities. Enjoy views of restored dunes, a paved path around restored wetlands, a kayak launch, and yurts/treehouses for nature-based lodging.

Pickleball enthusiasts will find four outdoor courts at Coast Guard Park and three indoor courts at Grand Haven Area

Coast Guard Park, a year-round recreational park, also serves as a trailhead for the North Ottawa Dunes, a 513-acre section of the Lake Michigan Coastal Greenway. The dunes feature wooded trails for hiking and, in winter, designated cross-country skiing paths. Kitchel Lindquist Hartger Dunes Preserve offers 115 acres of trails through protected dunes, forests, and wetlands.

Families enjoy Fire Barn Park, which features bike paths, a firefighter-themed playground, pickleball/tennis courts, and basketball courts. For a scenic bike ride, hop on the North Bank Trail, which connects Ferrysburg with nearby Spring Lake and Nunica.

For a classic beach day, head to North Beach Park for soft, sandy shores, panoramic lake Michigan views, a playground, a sand volleyball court, picnic tables, and grills. Enjoy a casual breakfast or lunch at Pine Street Cafe, where

favorites include omelets, eggs Benedict, and stuffed hash browns.

ALLENDALE

About 10 miles east of Lake Michigan is Allendale, which blends outdoor adventure, family-friendly activities, and cultural experiences.

This suburban town is home to Grand Valley State University, located along the Grand River. GVSU’s Arboretum features diverse plant life and scenic trails. The university’s Art Museum holds the third-largest art collection in the state of Michigan. GVSU is also home to The Meadows Golf Course, which is open to the public.

The Allendale Community Park includes scenic trails, a reservable picnic shelter, a playground, and sports facilities.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Bass River Recreation Area resides along 3.5 miles of the Grand River. More than 10 miles of trails are open for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding,

and winter sports. Quench your thirst and appetite at 5 de Mayo Mexican Grill & Bar, which has indoor and outdoor seating, house-made margaritas, and delicious cuisine. For a casual dinner after a busy day, try Main Street Pub, which serves burgers,

chicken tenders, and other classic American entrées.

COOPERSVILLE

Rural Coopersville is the perfect place to step back in time and unwind. Founded in the mid1800s as a forestry hub, the town

expanded with a railroad depot stop and evolved into a thriving agricultural center.

Today, Coopersville’s walkable downtown is a designated Social District. Sip your favorite beverage while exploring historic storefronts filled with unique shops, local businesses, and inviting eateries.

Pocket Park offers a splash pad for kids to cool off, while WalkThrough Park downtown provides seating and a warming fire to unwind. In the summer, Music on Main fills the town with lively tunes.

Satisfy your taste buds at local favorites like Delly Belly Bakery, known for its legendary doughnuts and blueberry fritters, or Southside Bar and Grill, with its appetizing burgers and sandwiches.

Coopersville Brewing Co. pairs its exceptional craft beers with a flavorful barbecue menu.

Explore Ottawa County’s Eastmanville Farm with its 1930s barn, historic cemetery, crop demonstrations, and hiking and equestrian trails. The Coopersville Farm Museum & Event Center showcases evolving farming life with craft shows, exhibits, and event venues.

Check out the Coopersville Car Show and Summerfest in August to experience a celebration of classic cars, live music, and family fun.

WEST OLIVE

West Olive reaches from the lakeshore to inland, rural West Michigan. With sandy beaches, lush woods, wetlands, and peaceful trails, West Olive offers outdoor adventure and relaxation.

Port Sheldon Natural Area’s 440 acres feature scenic trails, tranquil woods, wildlife ponds, and gently rolling terrain. Nearby Kirk Park spans 68 acres with nature trails and wooden stairways. Choose a stroll through wooded dunes for sweeping bluff views, or follow the path to a deck overlooking Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Both parks welcome off-leash dogs in designated areas.

If you’re a paddler, launch your kayak or canoe at Hemlock Crossing and glide along the calm waters of the Pigeon River. This gentle river leads to Pigeon Lake and ultimately

opens into Lake Michigan. Nearby, Hiawatha Forest provides a more secluded setting for hiking and cross-country skiing, with trails through towering pines.

Golfers enjoy Pigeon Creek Golf Course, a public course known for its well-kept greens and multiple tee options.

For American cuisine, Sandy Point Beach House is a local favorite known for its relaxed ambience, diverse menu, and beverages.

In fall and winter, West Olive’s bottomland and upland forests, old pine plantations, and riverbanks also offer hiking and cross-country skiing.

NUNICA

Nunica, a small, rural community in central Crockery Township, immerses visitors in nature and local flavor.

Just outside of town, Crockery Creek Natural Area covers 331 scenic acres along the Grand River and Crockery Creek. This diverse landscape includes 2 miles of trails for hiking and cross-country skiing. Discover habitats like floodplain forests, hardwoods, wet meadows, and buttonbush swamps. Wildlife sightings abound; keep an eye out for bald eagles, sandhill cranes, redheaded woodpeckers, river otters, and seasonal migratory birds.

For a quirky attraction to view from the road, Nunica’s very own Stonehenge replica offers a local take on the famous landmark. This roadside attraction is located on private property — no trespassing, please.

Crockery Creek Saloon serves up savory pizzas and crispy onion rings and is known for its “Creek Water,” a delicious but potent moonshine drink. Turk’s Tavern also delights with hearty Michigan fare and a whimsical, pig-themed menu.

For those seeking a rustic venue for weddings or special events, The Little Red Barn of Nunica is a unique option. Built in the 1920s, this beautifully preserved barn features original wooden floors, lofty timber ceilings, and rustic barnwood walls. It comfortably accommodates up to 200 guests, making it an unforgettable setting for any celebration.

AWARD-WINNING BEACHES BEACHES +SAND DUNES

America’s Third Coast calls, and every year, more than 2 million visitors answer that call by racing to West Michigan’s beaches.

It’s no wonder that last year, Grand Haven made Condé Nast Traveler’s list of the most beautiful beaches in the U.S.

Grand Haven’s beachfront — 20 acres at Grand Haven City Beach and an adjacent 48 acres at Grand Haven State Park — is a Lake Michigan delight with a perpetual vacation state of mind. Think flip-flops and T-shirts. It’s an ocean atmosphere in the middle of the continent,

except no sharks and no salt.

Immediately west of downtown along South Harbor Drive, the beaches offer soft, smooth sand with small dunes here and there. There’s swimming, surfing, kiteboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, and sunbathing. Special events include a kite festival, volleyball, pole-vaulting, and a sand-sculpture contest.

And the sunsets? Beyond spectacular. Both beach areas offer parking (free at City Beach and included with the Michigan Recreation Passport at the state park). There’s also limited free parking on

the street.

The state park also has picnic areas and a campground with 174 RV sites. In addition, it offers beach wheelchairs and track chairs. Reservations are recommended.

Grand Haven’s boardwalk skirts the north side of the state park, perfect for a stroll along the Grand River Channel from downtown to the state park and the popular South Pier.

LAKE M IC H IGAN

RIP CURRENTS

It’s not the ocean, but the currents in Lake Michigan can be so powerful at times that they can present a hazard to swimmers. Make sure you, your friends, and your family know how to handle yourselves if you get caught in a rip current. Some parks offer the flag warning system, but the best protection is being aware of the water conditions and knowledgeable about what to do in case of an emergency.

THINGS TO DO

Straight from the Farm

From tender green asparagus spears in spring to crisp red apples in autumn, and all the colors and textures in between, farmers markets serve as a celebration of local bests in vegetables, fruits, cheeses, breads, and flowers — all presented by friendly, knowledgeable vendors.

The Grand Haven Farmers Market, long a staple at Chinook Pier, will move to Mulligan’s Hollow later in the season because of renovation at the Chinook Pier area. The market is open Saturdays May through October, with Wednesdays added June through September.

The Spring Lake Farm + Garden Market will return to Tanglefoot Park on Thursdays June to September.

Small roadside stands at farm sites also provide fresh fare. They’re typically not staffed; you pay with the honor system.

And for those who want to immerse themselves in the farming atmosphere, you’ll find U-Pick flowers at Ford Farms, or U-Pick strawberries and blueberries at Visser Farms, blueberries at Reenders Blueberry Farms, and tomatoes and pumpkins at Mellema Farm.

TOP 10 THINGS TO DO THIS SUMMER

Our picks for the places and activities you won’t want to miss — not only for visitors but also for residents who want to act like visitors in their own backyard.

1. Watch the sun set over Lake Michigan. The best viewing spot is on the shore so you can see it disappear beyond the horizon. Be sure to bring your camera or cellphone for that magical lighting during golden hour. TIP: Wait for the afterglow — if the conditions are right, this will happen about 30 minutes after the sun sets.

2. Get wet in Lake Michigan. Just dipping your toes in doesn’t count. Nor does swishing your hand in the water. Because it’s all about bragging rights. Take your shoes off and wade into the water at least to your ankles. Then continue to walk barefoot on the beach. It’s nature’s therapy.

3. Walk the pier specifically, Grand Haven’s South Pier with its two lighthouses and catwalk. Park closer to downtown and walk at least part of the boardwalk to get to the pier. If you are so inclined, bring a fishing rod. You’ll love the oohs and aahs when you reel in your catch. TIP: Remember to buy your fishing license.

4. Enjoy a free synchronized water and light show at the Grand Haven Musical Fountain, built in 1962. Additional songs and upgraded technology are helping to produce remarkable programs this year. The 25-to-30-minute shows play each night at dusk from Memorial Day through Labor Day as well as Fridays and Saturdays in May and September. (See featured photo above.)

5. Take in the local arts scene, including live music at bars and restaurants as well as concerts, artwork in local galleries, and pop-up events.

6. Harvest locally grown (or made) provisions. Enjoy fruits and vegetables at farmers markets and farm-site stands, fish from Lake Michigan, and locally made chocolates, craft beer, and wine.

7. Hike, bike, stroll, or just sit awhile in one of the many city, county, and state parks. Scenery includes forests, dunes, beaches, and lakes.

8. To learn about our area, take your little ones to the Tri-Cities Historical Museum to play in the new pintsize replica of Grand Haven’s lighthouse and pier. It’s free!

9. Check the local calendar of events; you’ll find festivals throughout the year including the Kite Festival in May, Sand Sculpture Contest in June, and Coast Guard Festival and Jeep Fest in late July/early August.

10. Shop local. Visit downtown stores as well as thrift shops. Buy souvenirs. If you’re a resident, have souvenirs on hand at home to gift your visitors as a keepsake of their visit. In addition to mugs and T-shirts, home goods and Michigan-themed books make excellent mementos.

FESTIVALS +EVENTS

Looking to enhance your local shopping experience? Merchants and Makers pairs locally made goods with food trucks, drinks, and live music at its events in the Grand Haven Area.

“Etsy in person,” the creators call them. “Not your grandmother’s bazaar, although she would probably have a blast (so bring her!).”

You’ll find exquisite art created by more than 100 local artists — from paintings to puzzles, pottery to clothing, jewelry to candles, and even fidget toys. All because homemade is best made.

Among Merchants and Makers’ special events is a market during summer’s huge Coast Guard Festival. The Grand Haven Art Festival is also a highlight, held in downtown Grand Haven on Washington Avenue in June each year, hosting over 80 artists from all across the country.

Other local art events include those hosted by the Lakeshore Visual Arts Collective. The collective’s mantra: to bring innovative arts events to unexpected places on the lakeshore. It hosts one-night-only pop-ups a few times a year in unexpected places.

Consider, for example, its Art at the Yard, where artists’ originals hang among two-by-fours, shiplap, and walnut and maple in a lumberyard. It’s quite the match.

Also check out Gallery Uptown’s First Friday artist receptions, located in downtown Grand Haven.

And throughout the year, you’ll fi nd exhibits, bazaars, plays, concerts, and more at Central Park Place, in Centertown, and downtown. Art in the Park and Art at the Museum are also fun and interesting ways to view and purchase local artwork.

Art at the Yard provides the unique backdrop of a lumberyard for local artists’ work.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

NO EQUIPMENT? NO PROBLEM!

West Michigan loves the outdoors — on both land and water. If you’re trying before buying, or are vacationing from elsewhere, consider rentals.

On the Grand Haven Cycleboat, passengers provide the power. Yes, there’s a licensed captain and first mate who do the navigating, but it’s the passengers who propel the boat by pedaling. Until they don’t want to; that’s when the motor takes over. The boat seats 16, but only 10 pedal.

Lakeshore Kayak Rental offers kayaks — single as well as double — canoes, and stand-up paddleboards, with a map of local waterways that include bayous teeming with wildlife. On land, it offers bikes.

At Mi Bike Tours, find pedal bikes, e-bikes, tandems, and adult tricycles. But the pièce de résistance is its guided bike tours to see the sights and get the skinny on Grand Haven’s hidden gems.

Lessons can be the perfect introduction to new activities. MACkite in Grand Haven offers electric hydrofoil lessons, allowing visitors to try this unusual water sport.

Grand Haven Boat Rental offers cruising and sport pontoons on Spring Lake and the Grand River. Enjoy Boat Rentals rents tritoons (one with a waterslide) and bowriders. Its boats have access to Lake Michigan.

The fun doesn’t stop in winter, either. Mulligan’s Hollow rents ski and snowboard equipment, and it provides private and group lessons. Because it encourages families to bond through skiing, parents ski free when they’re with their children. Some Ottawa County parks also have cross-country ski and snowshoe rentals for more snow-filled delight.

TREK THE TRAILS

Trails are everywhere in the Grand Haven Area, from short paved lanes for strolling to long natural paths for serious hiking. With hundreds of miles of trails available, taking you through city, county, and state parks, you’re sure to enjoy views of water features, rolling dunes, and towering forests.

While not all trails and paths welcome bikes, many do — be sure to do your research and learn which trails are right for you.

Did you know that Ottawa County parks offer year-round programs that include night and twilight hikes as well as snowshoe hikes? What a fun way to explore the beautiful park system!

There are paths available that offer easy walking options — think the boardwalk along the Grand River Channel, the paved path at Ottawa Sands County Park, or short sections within longer trails. Not-so-easy offerings include Rosy Mound Natural Area’s challenging 360-stair climb to a stunning overlook of Lake Michigan.

Planning assistance and trail maps are available at the Visitors Center. Email visitorinfo@visitgrandhaven.com or call 616.842.4499 to request additional information.

Spoonville Trail

Named after a ghost town that once stood at the mouth of Crockery Creek on the Grand River. 4.3-mile, 10-foot paved trail for hiking and biking. Access to public lands along route. Restrooms/ rustic toilets available at trailheads. The Spoonville Trail connects Nunica to the south side of the Grand River where it links with the Idema Explorers Trail. The Spoonville Trail winds through the Terra Verde Golf Course and offers great views of the Grand River on the 231 Bridge.

TIME TO CRUISE

Last year, Big Blue, a 48-foot U.S. Coast Guard-approved vessel, was introduced to the Grand Haven waterfront to offer boat tours. Sunset cruises are especially popular. A highlight for kids — when the water is calm and few other boats are nearby — is to steer the boat. With Capt. Erik Peterson always there, they sit in the captain’s chair, wear the captain’s hat, and take the helm. Charters for up to six passengers are available from True North Yacht Solutions in Spring Lake. WHERE TO STAY

Treehouse and Yurt Village at Idema Explorers Camp

Outdoorsy. Upscale. Unique.

The Idema Explorers Camp, opened in May 2025, just might be the place to stay. Located in Ottawa Sands County Park on North Shore Drive — on the north side of the Grand River Channel — it offers nature-based lodging with grand amenities year-round.

You’ll find three treehouses and five yurts, each with beds, a kitchenette, electricity, Wi-Fi, heating, and even air-conditioning. They’re in a small section of the park surrounded by trees, dunes, and wetlands along the Grand River. A handicap-accessible kayak launch is at the site.

The camp was a dream of the county parks department, maybe 40 years into the future. Then, the Idema family saw the plans and gave more than $3.4 million to fast-track them.

If treehouses and yurts aren’t your style, there are close to 650 additional lodging options in the area. They range from hotels and motels to bed-and-breakfasts and vacation homes, offering visitors a diverse array of experiences and prices. Your perfect home away from home is here.

SIGNATURE SUSHI … AND MORE

Lucky Sushi Café in Grand Haven offers a pleasing nod to Asian dining that delights the eyes even before the first taste. Get your cameras ready because the sushi rolls are exquisite pieces of art.

Owner Rose Li tailors her menu to the Grand Haven Area, with locally inspired signature sushi rolls: the Grand Haven, Coast Guard, and Lighthouse rolls. Sushi novices easing into the cuisine can try her offerings with vegetables or cooked fish. Her sweet potato filling often charms less-adventurous diners.

Add in poke, appetizers, and a vast selection of teas, and you have options for every palate. The quality of ingredients and consistency of customer service make this location a local favorite.

And who knew — eel sauce is not made from eel! Instead, it comprises soy sauce, rice wine, sugar, and sake. It gets its name because it’s traditionally sprinkled over eel dishes. So drizzle with reckless abandon. TIP: Stop next door to try out the sister business, Lucky Tea Shop.

TASTY NEW BITES

In addition to its staple institutions, the Grand Haven Area continues to keep it fresh with new dining destinations. Here are few must-try eateries. The whimsical pink pigs at the door to Smokey Jose’s aren’t standing sentry; they’re inviting you in. Here, the cuisine is Mexican with a twist, “where tacos and tequila meet BBQ and bourbon.” Ribs are the showcase at this downtown Grand Haven eatery, but there’s also brisket, chicken, pulled pork, and fish.

Start with Jose’s Smoked Pineapple Margarita, perhaps. Then, order the Trash Can Nachos. You’ll

Attwood’s Kitchen & Drink in Spring Lake is a classic steakhouse, blending tradition with a relaxed, contemporary atmosphere and à la carte offerings that showcase twists on the familiar. Think special-occasion fine dining.

In the summer, the same crew also serves Rafters Rooftop Restaurant outside on the roof above Attwood’s. Far more casual than downstairs, the vibe is tank tops and shorts. Instead of steak, diners choose the short-rib sandwich, peel ’n’ eat shrimp, ceviche, and lobster roll.

BRING HOME A SLICE OF THE LAKESHORE

When it comes to souvenirs, Lake Michigan and Michigan’s “mitten” vie for top spot in the homes of residents and visitors alike.

To find your perfect piece of Grand Haven to take home, stroll downtown’s streets for souvenirs ranging from art at Gallery Uptown, SilverFire, and Calico Cat to clothing at Marüshka and Big Fish to gourmet food items at J-Dub’s and Fortino’s and chocolate mittens at Patricia’s Chocolate. TIP: When you buy chocolate, buy extra. Chances are much of it won’t make it home.

Great finds are everywhere: Local blueberry specialties at Blueberry Haven. The gift that keeps on giving — bags of specialty beans from local shops such as Aldea Coffee in Grand Haven and Java Boulevard/ Magnum Coffee House in nearby Nunica. Kites for West Michigan’s breezes at MACkite. Michigan-themed books at area bookstores like The Book Cellar and The Bookman. A taste of local history at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. Instruments, records, and more for music lovers at Guitar Haven and Off the Record. Do-it-yourself kits for stylish fabric boxes at ColorWay Arts. Chic home goods at Windermere House in Spring Lake.

Look in unexpected places. Bars, restaurants, grocery stores, flower shops, and even thrift and consignment stores can surprise you with oneof-a-kind charmers. Don’t forget to check for dates and locales of art shows and craft fairs.

RESALE GEMS

Vintage. Antique. Historic. Collectible. The terms vary, but in short, this is love the second time around. Or third. Or fourth. It’s shopping more sustainably. Avoiding overconsumption. Keeping good items in use. Spending wisely. You may be searching for something specific. Or you may be partaking in the joy of exploring and finding exactly what you aren’t looking for. It can be as small as a delicate pair of earrings or as big as a dining-room table that seats 12.

The diverse Centertown area houses a handful of shops offering such wonders on Grand Haven’s Seventh Street. They’re small shops with big offerings.

Vintage Green Antiques has just what its name denotes: vintage. Curated items date back to 1970 or earlier. The presentations are ultra-welcoming — perhaps three books artfully tied together, colorful blankets spilling out of a cupboard, children’s Valentine cards in the bed of a toy truck. “Saving the world one dresser at a time,” owner Joyce Workman says.

Antiques on Seventh, in the next block, is a walk through history, sometimes sparking a memory, other times revealing a surprise. Seven locals banded together to create the shop, each with their own style and knowledge, each tending the shop on a different day.

Centertown offers new as well as used and consignment stores. Find previously used sports equipment at Overtime Sports, clothing at Fashion Forward Consignments, instruments at Guitar Haven, books at The Book Cellar.

Then broaden your horizons because previously owned gems — big and small — can be found throughout the entire Grand Haven Area.

At the huge West Michigan Antique Mall, just off U.S. 31 at 168th Avenue, it’s easy to get lost in memories. And to get lost among booths, too, from 70 diverse dealers.

Windermere House in Spring Lake has sophisticated yet affordable treasures. Shop kids’ clothing, “previously loved,” at Worth Repeating and mostly women’s items at Purple Rose Boutique and Fluid in Grand Haven. At Grand Haven’s Toys Are Used, it’s all about toys and kids of all ages.

Some stores’ mission is to help others; take Love in Action’s two upscale thrift stores, where customers can purchase household items and clothing. Their purpose: to support the organization’s many programs that help those in need.

Goodwill and Hope’s Outlet have similar offerings and similar missions, while Habitat for Humanity ReStore sells home improvement products to support affordable homeownership.

All in all, the Grand Haven Area is a recycler’s gold mine.

TIMELESS ELEGANCE FOR UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES

It’s easy to envision a bride descending those wide tiered steps in front of the wraparound porch at the Weaver House at Pine Bend Park in West Olive. Or the bride and groom exchanging vows beneath the nearby trellis.

This popular wedding site, owned and operated by Ottawa County Parks, offers decades of charm, each season adding Mother Nature’s particular signature to the outdoor ambiance. And inside is the restored charm of the early 1900s,

with two fireplaces, period furnishings, and banquet tables and chairs to seat 50. Bridal parties can get ready in the elegant second-story rooms that let in natural light. Upgrades include heating and air conditioning.

Outdoor events, with tents, may accommodate up to 150. Beside the trellis and pavilion sits a small cottage with wicker furniture for the groom or bride to await the ceremony.

The Weaver House dates back to 1901, built by Albert and Lena Fridrich as part

of their Fridrich’s Point Hotel resort. The hotel building itself offered 21 rooms, and there was also a small zoo.

The resort did not last. In 1920, new owners took over and turned the hotel into a dance hall. Historians say it was quite the party place during Prohibition. In 1959, the dance hall was sadly destroyed by strong winds.

Cloyd and Marjorie Weaver bought the property in 1966 and lived in the house. In 1998, Ottawa County Parks purchased the site, and in 2003, Pine Bend Park was

opened to the public. The house was renovated and named the Weaver House.

Free open houses to introduce the Weaver House and its amenities to the public are available from mid-November through mid-April. Visit miottawa.org/ park-facilities/weaver-house to learn more about the venue, pricing, and availability.
