At a private club like Hound Ears Club, culture matters. The atmosphere we enjoy is shaped by the way we interactwithoneanothereachday.HoundEarsClub’s4thValueStatementplacesthisideaatthecenterofour culture:
Empathy and Respect: Empathy and respect are foundational to the well-being of both our members and our workforce. Empathy allows us to build meaningful connections, nurture strong relationships, and encourage collaboration. Respect shapes our interactions, communications, and decision-making, ensuring a positive and supportive environment for all.
These ideas may sound simple, but they are reflected in many of the everyday moments that define club life. They can be seen in a warm greeting at the gate, a thoughtful interactionbetween members and staff, patience duringabusyholidayweekend, orthewillingnesstoextendunderstandingwhenthingsarenotalwaysperfect. At their core, empathy and respect remind us that every interaction involves people who value being heard, appreciated, andtreatedthoughtfully.

New this season are updated procedures for accessing the golf course when carts are allowed off the path. We now have designated entry and exit points on all par fours and fives. These points are defined by two posts. For entering the course, stay in the fairway as much as possible before exiting back to the cart path. Our fairway bent grass is more resilient to cart traffic than our bluegrass rough. By defining exact access points, golf maintenance can better regulate wear patterns and thus provide better playing conditions.
We request carts remain on the path on par threes. Please remember to keep all four wheels on the path and please don’t park on the grass near teeing areas and greens.
We appreciate your cooperation as we monitor these details.
Back on the calendar is a blast from the past, the Couples Member-Member Tournament. Slated for July 16, member couples can compete in a straight scramble format. The fun begins with a full breakfast at 8am before heading to the course at 9:30am. We’ll have an awards dinner in the main Clubhouse with cocktails starting at 6pm. Go to the online calendar for further information.
Welcome Kirk Bailey and Reba Matthewson to our team. Both will assist Pete Farathy with starter and ranger duties. Howard Davis will also be on staff.

Please note a recent notification from the Carolina Golf Association
One of the most common questions that Member Services has received this spring revolve around the Soft and Hard Cap portion of the Handicap Index calculation. Questions such as "Why has my Handicap Index not changed over the past few months?" or "How long will my Handicap Index be on a cap?" have been frequent.
Although all players have good and bad stretches, a player's underlying ability does not typically change significantly within a one-year period. As a result, the soft cap and hard cap are built into the Handicap Index calculation as a safeguard to prevent extreme upward movement.

Continued from previous page
If your Handicap Index increases by 3.0 strokes within a year, the soft cap slows the rate of additional movement beyond 3.0 strokes by 50%.
The hard cap sets a max increase of 5.0 total strokes within a year.
The illustration below demonstrates how the caps are tied to a player's Low Handicap Index™ - which is used as a reference point. Note that a Low Handicap Index is not established until the player has 20 scores in their scoring record.

This season, our fairways have never been better and our rough is certainly thriving. With this, it’s important to be prepared should you find yourself wondering off the short grass.

A general rule from the rough is that loft is your friend. Attempting to play out of high grass with a low lofted fairway club or iron can be difficult to say the least. PGA and LPGA tour players know this and often go to a higher lofted iron or wedge when needed.
Common set-up and swing adjustments are:
Open stance to target
Position ball back in the stance
Place a bit more weight on the front foot
Make a steeper backswing to allow for a better angle to the ball on the forward swing
When the ball nestles down around the green, making a play similar to a bunker shot can be successful. With this technique, take your highest lofted wedge and swing the club under the ball when possible. Often this shot will come out softer and more predictable.
For more help with this shot or any part of your game, contact one of our PGA golf professionals for assistance.

Racquet Sports welcomes all members to Tennis & Pickleball for friendly and competitive play. Let’s have fun and get active together!
We have weekly calendar events in both Tennis & Pickleball for Men's, Ladies', Mixed, PBOP (Pickleball Open Play), and Tennis clinic. All you need to do is register online and show up to play; there's no need to get a partner to come. We have weekly events seven days a week!
For Pickleball, we especially encourage beginner players to register and take advantage of our PBOP (Pickleball Open Play) on Wednesday at 9am and Friday at 1pm. Our very friendly Pickleball Professional, Elizabeth Barry (PPR, PCI, & IPTPA Certified), will be on-site and will assist beginner players in learning the game in a fun atmosphere, while more experienced players duel it out on the other court.
Tennis/Pickleball Court Safety: Tennis/Pickleball court shoes are required to protect our courts and provide the stability needed for safe play. Running shoes are not designed for lateral support, which is needed to prevent injuries such as rolled ankles in Racquet Sports. We highly encourage Pickleball players to wear eye protection, as eye injuries are one of the most common injuries in Pickleball.
If you have any questions or injury concerns about Pickleball, please come to our Pickleball Open Play and talk to our Pickleball Professional, Elizabeth Barry. She is also available for lessons and can help you establish good movement habits that greatly reduce the risk of injury and help you become a better Pickleball player. To schedule a Pickleball lesson, please text Elizabeth at 412-848-2901.
To schedule a Tennis Lesson, please text the Director of Racquet Sports and Tennis Professional (PTR & PPR Certified), Eri Latimer, at 828-719-8467.
Proper Tennis Attire is required at both Tennis and Pickleball.

A lot of people think they’re training.
But what they’re really doing is exercising.
And there’s a difference. Exercise is random. Training is intentional.

If your workouts change every time you walk into the gym…
If you’re not tracking anything…
If you’re just trying to “get a good sweat”… That’s exercise.
Again, nothing wrong with it. But it’s also why progress can feel slow or nonexistent.
Training, on the other hand, has a plan:
You follow a structure
You repeat key movements
You track what you do
You aim to improve over time
Because if nothing is being measured, nothing is being improved. You don’t need a complicated program to start training. You just need direction.
Pick a few core movements. Write them down. Try to get a little better each week. That’s where real results begin.
If you need help developing a routine or figuring out where to start, contact the fitness center at 828.355.3360. We can connect you with one of our trainers and help you get set up with a plan that fits your goals and schedule.

Andy Morales serves as Beverage Manager and Restaurant Manager at Hound Ears Club, where he lays an integral role in shaping the overall dining experience for members and guests.
Raised primarily in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Andy comes from a military family that instilled in him the values of discipline, adaptability, and hard work from an early age. His mother is an Army veteran turned educator, and his father, originally a chemist, went on to serve more than 20 years in the Marine Corps before retiring as a Colonel. These influences helped shape Andy’s strong sense of responsibility and commitment to excellence.
At 12 years old, Andy was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, an experience that challenged him early on but ultimately led to a lifelong passion for health, nutrition, and physical fitness. He began competing in powerlifting at the age of 16 and spent over a decade performing at an elite level. During that time, he held multiple junior and open state records across North Carolina and Tennessee. His involvement in the sport also led to a coaching career, which began during college and continues today. After more than ten years of competition, Andy recently retired from powerlifting to pursue new athletic interests, including rock climbing and trail running.
Andy earned his degree in Nutrition & Dietetics from East Carolina University, where he met his wife, Emily, through powerlifting. The two later relocated to Boone when Emily transferred to Appalachian State University. A magna cum laude graduate, Emily is currently pursuing a degree in radiography and is on track to complete her program in 2027.
Andy’s professional journey led him to hospitality, where he discovered a passion for creating meaningful experiences and connections. He began at Linville Ridge Country Club before joining Hound Ears in 2022, where he has advanced through multiple roles to Beverage and Restaurant Manager.
“One of the things I value most about hospitality is its ability to create meaningful experiences and connections with people. I firmly believe that a passion for hospitality can lead to success in any career centered around working with people. Moving forward, I hope to continue advancing our beverage program while also helping cultivate that same passion for hospitality in every server, hostess, valet, and bartender I havetheprivilegeofworkingalongside.“

HelloHoundEarsFamily!

My name is Julián Patiño, and I’m honored to serve as the new Outlets Manager here at Hound Ears Club. Many of you have asked what “Outlets” means—no, not Tanger Outlets! The Outlets include the TeehouseandtheCascadesPool, andmygoalthisseasonistoelevatebothspaceswhileenhancingyour overallexperience.
I’m incredibly excited to step into this role—especially because this is already my fourth season at Hound Ears. I began in September 2023 as a server and have since had the opportunity to work as a bartender and Kids Camp counselor. Each role has deepened my appreciation for this special community.
I was born in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to Durham, North Carolina at a young age. I grew up in an Afro-Colombian household where my parents instilled in me the importance of service, integrity, and giving back. Since I was 11, I’ve been involved in community service through food drives, Meals on Wheels, andotheroutreachefforts.
I’m a proud graduate of Appalachian State University (Class of 2025), where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management. My journey wasn’t always linear—I initially pursued nursing before discovering my passion for hospitality right here at Hound Ears. Since then, I haven’t looked back. This experience has inspired me to continue my education with aMaster’sdegreeinHospitalityinthenearfuture.
Working at Hound Ears is truly a joy, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow within such an incredibleclub.Ilookforwardtomeetingeachofyouandmakingthisafantasticseasontogether! Ifyouwant,Icanalsocreateashorterversionforemailornewsletteruse.
