Beginning in late May and throughout June, Members have enthusiastically embraced the Terrace 19 Lounge, our new weekend outdoor dining experience on the Upper Terrace. Combining shareable tapas-style cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, and one of the most beautiful mountain settings anywhere, Terrace 19 has quickly becomeafavoritegatheringplaceforMembersandtheirguests.
What has made the concept so successful is its relaxed atmosphere. Rather than a traditional sit-down dinner, Terrace 19 offers Members the opportunity to enjoy an evening at their own pace - sharing small plates, connecting with friends, and taking in the spectacular mountain views that make Hound Ears so special. The energy each weekend has been remarkable, with Members lingering longer, meeting new friends, and creating exactlythekindofvibrantsocialatmospherethatstrengthensourClubcommunity.
The success of Terrace 19 is a direct reflection of the outstanding partnership between Clubhouse Manager RhysWilliams and Executive Chef Nick Davis.Together, they envisioned a dining experience that was both distinctive and approachable, then worked side-by-side to bring that vision to life each weekend throughout June. From the creative menu selections to the attentive service and seamless execution, Rhys and Nick have demonstratedhowcollaborationandinnovationcanelevatetheMemberexperience.
Terrace 19 also exemplifies Hound Ears Club’s Value Statement #1 – Accessible and Fiscally Sound. By activating an existing Club venue in such a creative way – and with minimal investment - we have expanded Members' dining options without compromising the quality of the experience. The concept provides another accessible venue for Members to gather while making thoughtful use of our facilities, culinary team, and operationalresources.ItisanexcellentexampleofenhancingtheMemberexperiencethroughinnovationwhile remainingmindfulofresponsiblestewardshipandlong-termfinancialsustainability.

We are having a fantastic season thus far with wonderful golf course conditions and robust participation in our events.
Our new fairway entry and exit posts have been well received. As a reminder, when carts are allowed off the paths, remember to enter the fairway through the first two posts you see and exit through the posts as you approach the green. While on the course, keep your cart in the fairway as much as possible as our bent grass fairways are more resilient than our bluegrass rough.
Congratulations to the Bloodhounds! Our 2026 Hound Ears Cup Champions! Bloodhounds 40 1/2 to Blueticks 29 1/2

Kirk Bailey’s journey has come full circle at Hound Ears Club. Originally from Michigan, Kirk came to Appalachian State University on a baseball scholarship. During his time at App State, he was drafted by the New York Yankees before returning to complete his degree as an Advertising major with double minors in Marketing and Management. He holds the distinction of being an All-American and is honored in the Appalachian State University Hall of Fame.
Before retiring, Kirk built a successful career in the energy industry, advancing through management roles across the Northeast. He eventually returned to Boone, where he continued his work in North Carolina on the non-electrical side of electrical cooperatives, helping expand their presence across five states.
A lifelong love of golf brought Kirk back to Hound Ears, where he now serves as a Golf Course Starter. This role is especially meaningful, as he previously worked at the club during his college years in the cart area, when Peter Rucker was an Assistant Golf Professional.
Outside of work, Kirk enjoys fly fishing, camping, and cross-country skiing. He and his wife, Tamara, have three children and seven grandchildren, and they attend Alliance Church in Boone.
We’re grateful to have Kirk back at Hound Ears, sharing his experience, enthusiasm, and passion for the game with our members each day.

USGA Rule 16 covers when play of a ball is interfered with a cart path.
Before making a swing or stance, if an obstruction (cart path) interferes with either, you may take free relief.

The relief area is the nearest point (not to be confused with the nicest point) where you can make a stance and swing and not be interfered by the cart path. When determining this point, it is important to mark the position of the ball before finding this spot. Often, this determines which side of the path relief is allowed.
The exact spot of relief is determined by location of the ball in the stance. From this spot the relief area is measured with a club length from this spot, but no closer to the hole. A club length is now defined by the longest club in your bag, other than the putter.
A legal drop must remain in the relief area. Previously, a ball could roll an addition two club lengths. Limits of relief are – The ball must be playable and in the general area, must not be nearer the hole, and full relief must be taken.
The biggest misconception of this rule is relief will always give you a better situation. Your nearest point of relief may be in the middle of a briar patch or a rhododendron thicket.
When should you chip, and when should you pitch? The answer typically comes down to swing length and club selection—so let’s break it down.
A reliable rule of thumb for both shots is minimal airtime and maximum roll. The goal is to land the ball on the nearest predictable surface and allow it to release toward the hole. In many cases, this is best achieved with a lower-lofted club.
For a chip shot, set up with a slightly open stance and a narrow base, keeping most of your weight on your lead foot. Focus on a simple, controlled motion where the shoulders guide the swing. Keep your hands soft and maintain even tempo back and through, with your weight staying forward throughout.
A pitch shot follows a similar foundation but introduces a longer swing and more wrist hinge. When a higher, softer landing is required, you can add loft by reducing shaft lean and increasing swing length. Even with these adjustments, the fundamentals remain the same—shoulders control the motion, hands stay soft, and weight favors the front side.
Mastering when to chip versus pitch—and executing each with confidence—will quickly elevate your short game.

June blessed us with beautiful weather and we had exceptional Tennis & Pickleball “Welcome Back” events, filled with fun and lots of laughter.
The weekly calendar events, Ladies’, Men’s, Mixed, and PBOP (Pickleball Open Play with Pickleball Pro, Elizabeth Barry) for Tennis & Pickleball have been steadily growing in participation as our Members start coming back to the mountains. We love welcoming new faces to join us for these fun weekly calendar events. Registration is required for all events and regular plays.
For Pickleball players, we encourage you to participate in the weekly (PBOP Pickleball Open Play) on Wednesdays at 9 am and Fridays at 1 pm (except on special event days). Our excellent Pickleball Pro, Elizabeth Barry, will be there to organize play for both experienced and beginner courts. The beginner players are welcome to learn the game from Elizabeth during the PBOP. She is also available for Private and Group lessons. Please text her at (412) 848-2901 to schedule lessons or if you have any questions.
July’s Racquet Sport Special Events:
For Tennis, the Fourth of July Round Robin, will be held on Saturday July 4 at 10am. This is always our most popular event of the season. We encourage you to sign up now to secure a spot.
For Pickleball, the Mountain Round Robin is Friday July 17th at 1pm. This is also a popular event in which registration is required and spaces are limited.
Pickleball Court Registration:
·During the weeks surrounding the Fourth of July, pickleball courts are in high demand, so be sure to register. Registration opens 7 days in advance. If, for any reason, you will not be able to keep a court time reservation during this period, please be courteous to your fellow members and cancel the court reservation online so that other members can register for the open slot. We appreciate your effort to make the best of this wonderful family time on the Pickleball courts.
·As always, when registering for the courts, please list ALL the players, including the guests, not just the member registering. We greatly appreciate your cooperation.
Pickleball Court Protocols: Bikes, scooters, skateboards (or anything other than feet!) are not permitted on the pickleball courts. Some family guests may be unaware of the required tennis attire and tennis court shoes, so we ask that you please ensure your family guests are following these protocols.
We require proper tennis court shoes for play on both the tennis courts and pickleball courts. Running shoes are not considered tennis court shoes. Tennis court shoes have more lateral support, which is important for preventing rolling ankles and keeping you safe during play. For tennis, the wrong shoes can also damage the courts by digging up the clay.
We highly encourage our pickleball players to wear eye protection to guard against errant balls that may ricochet to the face. This is, unfortunately, one of the most common pickleball injuries and is preventable with eye protection. Most racquet sports require eye protection. Pickleball balls are hard plastic whiffle balls, so please take precautions so that you can play throughout the season and more!

Meet Megan Clarke from our Racquet Sports team! If you’ve spent time on the tennis courts, you’ve likely seen Megan starting her day prepping courts to perfection, assisting members in the Racquet Sports Pro Shop, orcourtside—makingsuretowelsandwatersarealwaysavailable.
Megan joined Hound Ears through our Pickleball Pro, Elizabeth Barry, and has been a valued part of the team for three seasons, beginning inAugust 2024. This year, she’s expanding her role by lending a hand in Food & Beverage—bringinghersamepositiveenergyacrossmultipledepartments.
Originally from Matthews, NC, Megan was homeschooled and is the fifth of six siblings. She’s currently pursuing a degree at Appalachian State University and will graduate in December 2026 with a major in GeographyandaminorinPhotography.
Alifelong athlete, Megan played volleyball for 16 years, gravitating toward sand and beach volleyball in her later years. When she’s not working, you’ll find her snowboarding, cooking (she loves making curries and soups), traveling internationally, hooping at the basketball courts, capturing moments through photography, playingpingpong, drawing, orenjoyinganythingoutdoorsinthemountains.
What Megan loves most about Hound Ears? The people. She cherishes the conversations she has with members and feels honored to hear their stories and learn from their experiences—all while working in such a beautiful mountain setting. Be sure to say hello to Megan next time you’re at the courts or in the Club! Check outsomeofthefavoritephotosshehastakenbelow.

By Michael Darling Director of Fitness
As fitness professionals, we spend a lot of time talking about recovery. We discuss sleep, hydration, nutrition, stretching, mobility work, and stress management. Yet there is another form of recovery that many of us have quietly eliminated from our lives: Boredom.
Think about your typical day. How often are you truly alone with your thoughts?
When you're driving, there's a podcast playing. Waiting in line? You check your phone. Eating lunch? A screen is nearby. Even a few spare minutes before bed are often spent scrolling or catching up on emails.
We have become experts at filling every moment. The problem is that our brains need those empty spaces.
Researchers have identified what is called the brain's "default mode network." This system becomes active when we are not focused on a task. During these quiet moments, the brain processes experiences, organizes thoughts, solves problems, and helps us make sense of our lives.
In other words, some of our most important mental recovery happens when we appear to be doing nothing.
I have noticed this in my own life. Even when I have free time, I often feel the urge to reach for a podcast, a video, or some other form of stimulation. Yet some of my clearest thinking happens when I leave the headphones behind and simply take a walk.
Many people today report feeling tired despite getting enough sleep. While there are certainly many causes of fatigue, one contributor may be that we've eliminated nearly every "attention gap" from our day.
The good news is that creating more mental space doesn't require a digital detox.
Try taking a walk without earbuds. Eat a meal without a screen. Sit outside for a few minutes without reaching for your phone.
At first, it may feel uncomfortable. But over time, you may discover that those quiet moments become some of the most restorative parts of your day.
This month, I encourage you to reclaim a few moments of boredom. You may find that one of the best recovery tools isn't something you add to your life—it's something you leave out.

WearenowenteringthebeginningofourbusyseasonhereatHoundEars, andItrulybelievethisisshapingup to be the best season I’ve seen in 10 years with the Club. Our international team members have transitioned seamlessly alongside our local staff, and together they have helped build a strong, cohesive team dynamic that positionsuswellforthemonthsahead.
As our membership continues to enjoy active use of Club amenities and dining venues, our focus remains on deliveringahigh-qualityexperiencewhileensuringwehavethestaffing,equipment,andresourcesnecessaryto meet that demand. Each year, we placed numerous help-wanted advertisements, often attracting either untrained applicants or transient kitchen workers whoseavailabilityandconsistencyvariedconsiderably.
This year’s group has raised the bar. They bring a level of professionalism, skill, and consistency that has not previously been possible at Hound Ears. Their addition allows us to better meet Member demand during our busiest months while maintaining the standards of service and food quality our members expect. As you see them around the Club, I encourage you to introduce yourselves. Our team includes June and Reyna Castillo from the Philippines; Andrew and Dilon Morgan (not related) from Jamaica; Akiel Stevenson from Barbados; DiegoHernandezfromMexico;andAlbertoAdrianzenfromPeru.
I personally interviewed many candidates before selecting this group. Beyond technical skill, I focused on finding individuals whose personalities and values would complement our culture and strengthen the overall team.
