Beetlejuice Comes to the Broward Center
June 13-25
By Scott Holland
The Bank of America
Broadway in Fort Lauderdale presents the North American Tour of Beetlejuice. The edgy and irreverent Broadway smash hit musical comedy comes to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Tuesday, June 13 through Sunday, June 25th.
Based on Tim Burton's dearly beloved film, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book, an astonishing set, and a score that's out of this Netherworld, Beetlejuice is “screamingly good fun!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under, to be exact), it's a remarkably touching show about family, love, and making the most of every Day-O!
Beetlejuice is directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers with an original score by Tony Award nominee Eddie Perfect; a book by Tony Award nominee Scott Brown and Tony and Emmy Award nominee Anthony King; music supervision, orchestrations and incidental music by Kris Kukul; and choreography by Connor Gallagher.
Beetlejuice opened at Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre on Thursday, April 25, 2019, presented by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures (Mark Kaufman) and Langley Park Productions (Kevin McCormick), and won the Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for David Korins' scenic design and was nominated for eight Tony Awards including Best New Musical. After Covid,

Beetlejuice returned triumphantly to Broadway with performances on April 8, 2022, at the Marquis Theatre where it haunted Broadway through January 8, 2023.
It was a pleasure to sit down with Sean McManus for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
At what age did you begin performing?
“History Fort Lauderdale is grateful to our community of supporters who have recently joined us to showcase the valuable legacies of our LGBTQ businesses and influential leaders who have worked to make our great city an ideal place to live, work, and play...”
I began performing out of the womb…lol…I really started performing when I was 8 doing elementary school productions and I never stopped. What was your first paid gig?
My first gig is when I was 14 at the Paper Mill Playhouse (which won the 2018 Tony for outstanding regional theatre). It was a big deal to me as it was my hometown theatre and it meant the world to me. When did you know performing would be your career?
When I was a junior in high school, I made the decision I wanted to pursue it in college. I put all my eggs in one basket, but I knew if I didn't, I would be more unhappy the if I tried and it didn't work. Other than this show, I see you have been in productions of Sound of Music, Newsies and West Side Story what show has been your favorite and why?
My favorite was Newsies because it was the show that got me into musical theatre after watching it from the audience. To see guys dancing and expressing themselves through dance is when I knew this is what I wanted to do. So, to be in that show felt really full circle.
What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but would die to)?
SpongeBob in the SpongeBob The Musical. I would also love to play Boq in Wicked or anything in the Book of Mormon.
Is there extra pressure being in this show considering it's such an iconic movie and everyone knows the story?
For sure, you want to honor the movie, and Tim Burton's vision. At the same time, you want to make it palatable for the Broadway audiences. So, it's a fine line to walk, but I think this show does a really good job of that.
How well do you and your castmates get along?
We are all besties. We love each other so much. They found a group of people who aren't afraid to be silly and outrageous.
HotspotsMagazine.com | 31
Are you single or taken?
I am single.
What's the perfect guy for you?
Somebody who has a great sense of humor, does not take themselves to seriously and has to be passion about something. I also want someone smart and curious, so they can always be figuring out what makes them tick.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Funny, determined, and loving. What do you do for fun?
I go on long walks in all the different cities. I love reading and last night we went to JR's for musical Mondays. I also love eating at different restaurants and tryingdifferent cuisines.
What should our readers expect from this touring company of “Bettlejuice”?
Bettlejuice is basically a big funhouse. The set is amazing, but more than that the characters are so magical they come to life in front to your eyes. Its literally the movie with a Broadway twist. There really is no other show like it!

Twist Celebrates
The Iconic Bar
Turns 30!
Wednesday, June 21st.
By Scott Holland
Everybody has a story (or many) about Twist. My best story is when I was newly out and visiting South Beach from New York a million years ago. My story is not PG enough to write in this magazine, but let's just say it included an Argentinian ballet dancer that was in south beach on tour. I will let your imagination fill in the blanks, but let's just say I was smiling the rest of my vacation.
After moving here I became friends with Richard and Joel and think I have only missed one anniversary party, so get your outfit together and meet me at Twist on Wednesday, June 21 for their 30th anniversary celebration.
Before this momentous anniversary, I thought it was appropriate to sit down with Joel for this exclusive Hotspots interview.
How did you get hired at Twist?
I met Richard Trainor, my future business partner and best friend shortly after moving to Florida, while interviewing for a
74 | HotspotsMagazine.com
position at Club 21 in Hallandale. Richard was the new GM, and I was looking to bartend. Richard and I went on to become fast friends and worked on several projects together beyond club 21, including club Kaos! in South Miami . But the truth is, we both really wanted to have something on the beach. Richard and partners secured a lease on a property he had spotted on Washington Avenue with a tiny handwritt en “for rent” sign in the window. It was the nineties; it was South Beach; it was truly magical. This of course would become the club we all know as Twist. I helped Richard develop the original concept and had a lot of fun behind the bar.
At what point did you buy into Twist and what made you do that?
Nearly 10 years later one of the original partners was interested in selling and Richard asked me to join him in ownership. It wasn't a difficult decision.
Everybody knows that you and Richard were like family, what did you learn from Richard about business and what are your favorite Richard stories?
Richard was a hospitality genius. He loved to go out and he was the life of every party. He is dearly missed by everyone at Twist, and we can only hope to continue his legacy. One of my favorite stories from way back in the beginning, happened while Richard was building out Twist. He was having a hard time deciding on a name for the new club. It was getting close to opening and something had to be decided. Out with a group of friends at Warsaw, I believe, doing a couple shots, dear friend Tommy Decker exclaimed, “I'm twisted!” and Richard yelled that's it! That's the name! And Twist was born. How has Twist changed from its original concept?
Overtime nightclubs change and evolve to stay relevant. Twist has grown from 2 rooms to 7. Twist used to be known as the place to go before the clubs and after. Now, we arguably are the club. What hasn't changed though is the energy you feel when you walk into any of the rooms. The sheer joy you see on the faces of so many. I believe we've maintained the hottest, yet friendliest bartenders you'll find anywhere with world class DJs that can compete with anyone. We
are thrilled that so many call twist home. After 3 decades there is a certain familiarity when you walk in the door. You know damn well you're going to have a hell of a time!
You have many bartenders that have been there a long time, what's the secret in keeping staff long-term?
I think if you are fair and respectful while creating a fun environment to work in, it really isn't work at all. Well, at least most of the time.
After all these years, is there a party that stands out to you?
There have been many! The theme Partys were always the most fun! One that I loved, that will probably never be done again was our foil party. The entire club was wrapped in aluminum foil, the walls, the ceiling and even the bartenders! It was a blast, but we were removing staples for years!
“What hasn't changed though is the energy you feel when you walk into any of the rooms. The sheer joy you see on the faces of so many. I believe we've maintained the hottest, yet friendliest bartenders you'll find anywhere...”
There have been many celebrity sightings at Twist, what is your best celebrity story?
We have been fortunate to have our fair share of celebrities stop by over the years. Doing shots with Katy Perry, dressing in leather with Mickey Rourke or dancing with Adele, it has been truly amazing. You never really know who's going to walk in next. What does the future hold for Twist?
We are all thrilled that our loyal customers and Friends have allowed us to do this for so many years. Without all of you, none of this would be possible. It has been an absolute blast and there are many, many more amazing times to come.
Our 30th anniversary celebration will be held Wednesday, June 21 with an open bar and hors d'oeuvres 9-11 with lots of performances. We have a few surprises planned, so hang tight, it's going to be an incredible ride. Cheers to 30 more years!

Juneteenth Stands for PRIDE!
By Jameer Baptiste
Pride comes in many forms and Juneteenth is one representation of it that lives within our nation's understanding of acceptance and equality.
The day June 19th will forever be seared in our history as a day when the United States came one step closer to realizing that all people are created equal and thus should be treated with respect and dignity. It was on that day in 1865 that slaves were declared free in Texas. The proclamation of
freedom was announced by the Union Army General Gordon Granger upon his arrival in the Lone Star State.
The Emancipation Proclamation transmitted that day as a general order of the famous General Order No. 3 came two years after the official United States Proclamation 95 that declared the abolition of slavery in 1862. However, the memory of the General Order No. 3 proclamation, which was announced more than a month after the Civil War ended, lives on year after year as an honored American holiday.
Before the Freedom Day celebration reached national recognition, it stayed within the confines of the Lone Star State –particularly in churches within Texan black communities. The meaning of the celebration always stayed the same but the pride behind it took on multiple purposes. The first Jubilee Day that occurred just a year after General Granger's official proclamation acted as an informative event with the purpose of educating newly freed slaves on how to vote.
The June 19, 1866, inaugural Jubilee Day was organized by a group of freed

slaves called Freedmen. The group's pride ran deep as it wasn't just by emancipation that some of them, both men and women (Freedwomen), were legally freed Black Americans. Some gained their freedom through self-purchase, a process in which enslaved people were legally unfettered by their own ability to acquire enough funds to negotiate a price for their freedom.
Overtime by 1872 the Freedmen, specifically 4 members of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church, were able to garner enough money as a group to purchase land in Houston, Texas, which acted as the grounds for the annual Jubilee Day celebrations. What is known today as Emancipation Park is not only the oldest park in Houston but also the oldest park throughout the state of Texas.
The pride event officially changed names from Jubilee Day to Juneteenth sometime in the 1890s, a decade in which Black American pride was reversed in the
Confederate States that enacted disenfranchising laws against black people. And yet again, Juneteenth took on another purpose – an annual event where black people could come together in camaraderie and acceptance. At one point, an estimated 30,000 Black Americans attended an 1898 Juneteenth celebration at Booker T. Washington Park.
The annual Texan Juneteenth celebrations gained in popularity and by the 1920s and 30s, the prideful day became an honored tradition within black communities throughout the Southern States of America. The Freedom Day radiated with pride intermingling serious aspects of Black American liberation with that of celebratory components like food festivals that represented Black American cuisine.
Although the Liberation Day continued to increase in attention making its way from just a celebration in Southern States to becoming an annual affair within black communities throughout the United States by the 1940s, true equality still eluded Black Americans. Occurrences of segregation, inequality and unrest caused moments of decline throughout the pride celebration's existence. But like that of human will, Black Americans continued to fight with pride for inalienable freedom.
It's a fight that's no stranger to any marginalized community. Till this day, Black Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, LGBTQ+ people, and the list goes on, fight for true equality. Juneteenth is a reminder of that fight. But it's also a moment of pride, a moment to celebrate Black American Cultural, Black American Resilience and Black American Determination.

June is All About LGBT Families.
Interview with “The Queer Family Podcast” host, Jaimie Kelton.
By Maria Espinal
“
...It turns out there were plenty of queer folks who wanted to tell their family-building journeys and who wanted to see their stories mirrored back to them.”
“If These Ovaries Could Talk”…if that doesn't grab your attention right away, I don't know what would. That phrase served as the title for a book and the name of a podcast that started in 2017 and was co-hosted by Jaimie Kelton and lesbian mom and friend Robin Hopkins. Currently, the podcast has been re-named to “The Queer Family Podcast” (TQFP) and features Jaimie, and her cheerful personality, at the helm.
“TQFP” was created after a 3-year fertility journey and growing frustration with the fact that Jaimie couldn't find stories about families like hers anywhere in mainstream media. Jaimie and Robin set out to create a show that highlighted, uplifted, and normalized queer families like their own. With the support of Rosie O'Donnell and other prominent figures, the podcast provides a platform for queer
114 | HotspotsMagazine.com
families to tell their stories and to address the challenges that queer families continue to face, even today.
This month, “The Queer Family Podcast” is th going big as it celebrates its 200 episode and also LGBT Pride month, by doubling up on their episodes in June; it will be a Pride Extravaganza! We recently talked to Jaime about the podcast, Florida laws, LGBT families and more.
The original name for the podcast is just so great, why the name change? Was it the necessary next step?
The Podcast was born out of a personal struggle I had with infertility. I couldn't find my story mirrored anywhere. Robin and I knew that we had enough lesbian mom friends to at least fill up a whole season and so we named the show with that in mind. The title was based on a 90's lesbian-ish made for tv movie with Cher titled If These Walls Could Talk which was kind of a beacon for lesbians everywhere at the time since there was so little representation of lesbians in mainstream media (shocker). To our surprise, the podcast gained traction quickly. It turns out there were plenty of queer folks who wanted to tell their family-building journeys and who wanted to see their stories mirrored
back to them. The show has become a safe and inclusive space for all queer families and allies to come together and share their stories. When Robin left the show last year I saw an opportunity to rebrand. And so, “The Queer Family Podcast” was born. Representation matters, and this show is determined to push the narrative of intentional and loving queer family building, making it the norm and not the exception, in every form. Did you find the whole process you went through as easy or as hard as you thought? Is it harder for lesbian couples than what it could be to a straight couple or single parent?
I think that if you're not considered a member of "mainstream society," everything is harder. Representation matters on all fronts. If our stories aren't a part of the overall narrative, then those of us on the outskirts will be the last to get the resources that those who are regularly in the media get.
It is obvious there aren't enough resources, sperm banks and/or legal information for LGBT couples who want to become parents, correct?
Nope. A lot of times these resources are primarily set up for folks who fit "the norm." We have to vet every resource we encounter to, first, make sure they will work with someone in the LGBTQ community, and second, to see if they have actually set their systems up for folks in our community as well. Sadly, one of those check marks isn't met. It's one thing for a law firm to add a pride flag to its website, it's an entirely different thing for that same law firm to make sure its forms and staff reflect the community and are prepared to work with the community they are boasting to support. We've got a long way to go. Since you started the podcast in 2017, how much do you think the LGBT community has changed?
I feel like the more visible the LGBTQ community becomes, the more open we become. We're showing up in all of our truths now. And we're showing the rest of the world how to truly be accepting of all of the different identities and sexualities that exist.

Jaime (actor, singer, dancer, voiceover artist and podcaster) currently lives in NYC with her partner, Anne, and her kids, Anne Rose, 9 and Orion, 5 (aren’t they adorable?).
As we celebrate Pride Month, you are also celebrating your 200 episodes, congratulations. Why are the episodes this month extra special and how did you choose your guests?
Thank you! For Pride Month we wanted to interview folks who seemed to share a similar mission to us; to use a platform to uplift, highlight and normalize queer families. Every guest for the “Queer Family Podcast Pride Extravaganza” has worked through visibility, education, and advocacy to do just that. The stories they tell help to create positive change for our community.
the comments of the tweet. People were threatening to find them and rip these babies from them.
Unbelievable…I would like to ask your thoughts, as a mom, about the situation we are going through now with our “lovely” FL Governor (insert sarcastic tone here) and the "Don't say Gay" bill, kids and drag queens, banning books, trans kids, etc...
It's scary, it's ignorant, it's despicable. These politicians need to realize that the hate they incite is having real consequences. They have blood on their hands and they will have more as long as they continue spewing this hateful rhetoric about the LGBTQ community. The trans community is being attacked now, trans children's lives are on the line...where does the line get drawn? The Proud Boys have vowed to hold protests at Pride celebrations across the country. It makes me second-guess bringing my kids to Pride Celebrations, which is heartbreaking. My kids love Pride. We love celebrating Pride as a family. But you never know what fanatic took Ron DeSantis' words to heart and decided to do something about it. It's heartbreaking that we even have to worry about this. It makes me very sad honestly. The podcast is also now on video on YouTube. Any other news on the evolution of the podcast or future books?
Out of all the guests you have had, is there a particular story that left a mark on you. I just interviewed the Vaughn-Trainors (@mrvaughntrainor) and they told a story that is sitting heavy on my heart. A short while after finally bringing their premature twins home from the hospital, a Texas politician reposted a video they had shared of them holding their babies as they took them home, and called them pedophiles and child sex traffickers for bringing these beautiful babies into the world (babies that took them 6 years, a failed adoption journey and a surrogacy journey marked by hardship to finally be able to call their own.) This politician took their joy and turned it into something evil for over 6 million viewers. But what's worse is what their followers wrote in
Right now we're excited to add the video element! I'm hoping that soon there will be a more upscale studio version of the show and possibly more queer-centric TV in general. For now, head to our YouTube and watch our beautiful queer family content! Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers? Visibility matters, and Representation matters. Show up and be proud. You're beautiful and you deserve to live as your authentic self. Happy Pride folks!

Celebration of Pride Month, Historical Homos Presents the Gayest Stories Never Told
A New Dekkoo Series Executive Produced by Zachary Quinto
Deekkoo.com, a subscription streaming service dedicated to gay men, celebrates Pride month with an original series executive produced by Zachary Quinto. Historical Homos is a provocative and often hysterically funny guide to queer history. For thousands of years, world historians have kept some of the greatest names in civilization in the closet. Socrates, Virginia Woolf, Michelangelo, and Shakespeare –they were all members of the rainbow tribe. In Historical Homos, hosts Bash and Donal Brophy uncover and unload the most tantalizing dish on some of these great queers of yesteryear. Did you know that Louis XIV's brother, Philippe, dressed up in drag and that Leonardo da Vinci was arrested for sodomy twice? Or that Eleanor th Rykener, a 13 century trans sex worker, claimed in court records that her best clients were monks because they paid

more? Directed by Brendan Patrick Hughes, written by Bash, produced by Idyllwild Pictures and executive produced by Emrhys Cooper, Brian Sokel and Zachary Quinto, Historical Homos premieres Friday June 9, on deekkoo.com, with a new episode streaming every Friday through Pride month.
“The world is hell-bent on believing that gays, lesbians, trans people and queers of all kinds are the proud innovations of the 20th century,” says Bash. “Donal and I are here to prove that's utter nonsense. Queer people have been around for eons, challenging society, serving looks, and living out their deepest fantasies. Our story stretches from Stonewall to Hadrian's Wall, and only the gay gods know how far beyond that.”
he is, he researches each figure meticulously.”
“Donal balances my nerdiness and obsession for detail with his empathetic appreciation for the stories and lives we cover,” Bash interjects. “He's an actor by training so he understands these figures as multidimensional people.”
According to both, the goal of the series is not merely to congratulate the historical figures for being queer. Bash and Donal interrogate these people, dig into every rumor, and slice of gossip, and ask the “tough” questions to learn who was buggering whom, in what positions, and on what substances. Both hosts believe humor is crucial because, for too long, the narrative of queer history has been one of repression, alienation, and oppression. In
Historical Homos began as a coffee table book by Bash and his sister, Lucy Hendra. It later morphed into social media with its popular Instagram page. When the siblings began their search for a production company to turn Historical Homos into a series, they were connected with Zachary Quinto who happened to be working on a similar project called Pride and Prejudice with Donal Brophy and Emrhys Cooper. The group decided to combine both projects into one, hosted by Bash and Donal.
“Bash is the real backbone of the series,” Donal contends. “Like the true scholar that
Historical Homos, we learn queerness has not always been rejected. Same-sex love and desire have not always been denigrated.
The first four episodes present a nice spread of L, G, B, and T. The first episode explores male homosexuality in Greek Mythology and how these myths reflected real life in ancient Greece. In episode two, Bash and Donal delve into the true story of a transgender spy and soldier, Le Chevalier d'Éon, who was born Charles and became Charlotte at the age of 49 – only to discover the humiliating constraints of life as an 18th century woman.
HotspotsMagazine.com | 135
The third episode of Historical Homos focuses on the little-known bisexual proclivities of William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. The final Pride month episode reviews the life and loves of Virginia Woolf, particularly her lesbian affair with Vita Sackville-West.
“I wish I knew about these historic queer people as a child,” Donal Brophy reflects. Growing up in Ireland and Australia, Brophy knew little of what being gay was besides for the odd reference in film and on TV. “Much of what I knew was tied to the fear and stigma around the AIDS epidemic. It would have been so helpful in my coming out to have heard about positive, creative, intelligent gay people.”
Bash grew up in Manhattan and the south of France. His father, Tony Hendra, was an actor and writer, best known for starring in the film This Is Spinal Tap and for editing the popular satirist magazine, National Lampoon. Bash knew he was gay at seven years old and came out to his family and friends at sixteen.
Studying history was an escape and like his own historical heroine, Madame du Châtelet, Bash was fiercely dedicated to his intellectual ambition, especially when he discovered that many historical figures were part of the LGBTQ+ community. He began devouring any book, article,
website, movie, docuseries, letter, or stray piece of graffiti in the records that proved queer people have always been here. “You just have to know where and how to look,” he says.
Luckily, today's LGBTQ+ generation have it easier. They simply need to stream Historical Homos on Dekkoo. But Bash and Donal hope the series appeals to a heterosexual audience, too. Says Bash, “Our hope is that all viewers – gay and straight – learn to expand what they believe about the
past and human sexuality. That's one of the most powerful ways to better understand the queer community's lived experiences and inherited contexts.”
Historical Homos premieres on Dekkoo on June 9, 2023. For more information, visit dekkoo.com. Historical Homos will also be available as an audio podcast on Spotify and all major podcast platforms.

By Andreus Quinones
Dear Andreus,
I recently met a guy, and we definitely hit it off. I felt like he was a total match, until I found out that he was a flight attendant. I have always heard stories about flight attendants and promiscuity. He says that he wants to have a relationship with me, but how I am to know that he is not hooking up when he is traveling? I haven't said any of this to him, but I am certainly struggling with how to move forward. Any suggestions?
Sincerely Joshua P.
Dear Joshua,
The first thing you should ask yourself is – Has he given you any reason to not trust him? Also, it is fair to generalize based on what you have heard about flight attendants. There is nothing factual about saying that flight attendants are promiscuous. I think you have to examine how you feel about him, how he feels about you, and then take it at face value. Maybe talk about it with him, but don't assume anything or accuse him of anything. At the end of the day, only you know whether this relationship is for you or not.
Dear Andreus,
My boyfriend and I are arguing all the time now. We've been together ten years, and the last nine of those have been great. For some reason, we just have been growing apart. It feels like we don't have much in common anymore. I feel like I have to walk on eggshells around him, because he seems to get irritated by the tiniest things. I am afraid to ask him if we are over because he might say yes. I don't know what to do.
Sincerely,
Christopher M.
Dear Christopher,
The first thing I would say, is talk. It may not be the most comfortable option, but certainly better than being tortured by the unknown. It could very well be something that is fixable. Obviously, something has changed or shifted in your relationship. Communication is a necessary ingredient in maintaining a healthy relationship. Maybe try new things or ask him what he needs or wants. Then talk about it. You may be pleasantly surprised at the outcome. I hope this helps, and things work out.
