A couple weeks before the grand opening I sat down with owners David, Ken and Tom for this Exclusive Hotspots Interview: How did the idea come about?

We always wanted and dreamed about having a hospitality property in Wilton Manors/Fort Lauderdale as we have lived here for a long time. We had been looking for a while but wanted to wait for the perfect place. When we sold our hotels (Brass Key and Crowne Pointe) after owning and operating them in P Town for the last 25 years, we started looking seriously down here. As soon as we saw this property, we knew it was the one. We felt the property really lends itself well to what today's travelers are looking for in vacation accommodations - spacious suites with fully equipped kitchens and technology driven experiences like contactless check ins, fast WiFi, and smart TVs. How long did it take to complete?

Not very long, as we closed on the property in January of this year, and we immediately started renovations and we slowly brought units online as we finished them. Now the property is fully done and all the Suites are available to rent. Did it come out as good as you anticipated? Actually, it came out better than we

planned. We had an idea of the "look" we wanted and worked with a local designer, David Bowles of Elite Home Staging, to do all the interior decor of the suites to bring that vision to life.

Why should guests choose Wilton River Suites over other accommodations?

We think our suites offer great value with their square footage. The fully furnished apartments feel like home including a fully functioning kitchen, huge closets, central A/C, and resort quality amenities. We’re on the edge of everything, where you can walk to the drive, but it's just far enough away that it's quiet if you want to get away. We are an all-welcome property. What are some of the resort quality amenities you speak of?

We have a gym, a beautiful infinity pool with plenty of lounge chairs, a BBQ, a picnic area right on the dock, a floating dock which allows easy access to the Middle River (Sunrise Paddle Board will deliver), and gigantic closets (Scott's Note: Unbelievable closets, which I would love in my bedroom…LOL).

Unfortunately, Jimmy missed the opportunity to be a part of our annual Spa Edition. However, since Jimmy has been a part of the edition for almost a decade, we decided to appreciate his loyalty and give his beautiful spa the opportunity to be featured.

When I entered J. Cohen's Day Spa a few weeks ago, the wonderful Clint greeted me. I have known Clint for many years and his aura is always beautiful and very calming, perfect for a spa. After a wonderful hug, he offered me a beverage before the pampering sessions began.

I was then introduced to James Crickman, who has been working at the spa for 3 years now. James asked if I had any problem areas, and I told him I was sure he would find them as they are pretty obvious. He then explained that his usual massages range between a Swedish and Deep Tissue massage (90 Mins - $125) and asked if I was ok with that. Once I said yes, he said if the pressure is ever too hard to please let him know, and the massage began. I found out that James was a nurse for over 2 decades when he decided to switch careers to a Licensed Massage Therapist.

As he started on my body, he quickly found my tense areas and asked if it was OK to massage those areas a little deeper. He explained that I would feel a little more pressure and that it could be a bit sore for a couple of days. James is well trained and gave a great massage. I was so relaxed after the massage, all I wanted to do was lay down. Lucky for me, my next treatment was only a few steps away.

Alex Guio, was my nail technician who was going to pamper me with a 30 minute

manicure ($40) followed by a 60 minute Pedicure ($45). Alex has only been working at the spa for a few months, but he fits in beautifully. His demeanor is so relaxed and gentle it is very calming.

Alex explained to me that the steps are the same for both procedures, and they are: Soak in warm water, clip and file nails, soak again, then Alex removes the cuticles, files the nails down some more, administers a scrub, then he takes the scrub off with a hot towel (if you know me, you know how much I love a hot towels), this is followed by buffing or a polish (up to the customer), and then he massages lotion on to you.

For the manicure I was seated at a table, but for the pedicure I was in a massaging pedicure chair. It was very interesting watching Alex perform these procedures as he is a stickler for detail, and you can tell he really enjoys his job. When I mentioned this to him, he said I was right, but that what gives him the most enjoyment is a satisfied customer.

I was then introduced to Drew Hoggions, who escorted me to his area for a fabulous facial that was going to take years off my life. The Anti-Aging facial (60 mins - $99) is a deep cleansing and relaxing facial and is perfectly customized to rebalance and re-energize your skin for an anti-aging and more youthful appearance. It actively increases skin moisture, calms irritations, and minimizes expression lines and wrinkles. After checking my skin and making an evaluation, he proceeded to cleanse and

exfoliate using the Spa's amazing Elemis products. For the cleansing he used ProCollagen Energizing Marine Cleanser, which was followed by the Gentle Rose Exfoliator. Then came the extractions, and then afterwards he cleansed/balanced the skin by applying a "Balancing Lavender Toner." This was followed by a brief Facial Massage. Drew then applied the Elemis "Pro-Collagen Eye Renewal Cream" under/around the eyes, followed by applying the "ProCollagen Marine Moisturizer" to my entire face and neck. Lastly, he applied a light coat of SPF. This facial made my skin glow. Afterwards, Jimmy invited me to experience his Laser treatment, but I was unavailable due to magazine deadlines. However, I asked him about it so I can report on it. Jimmy's Laser treatment includes a

Photo Facial ($500 on its own) and is only $600 for full facial resurfacing using a diode laser (he uses a Candela Nordlys Frax resurfacing laser). The photo facial recovers brown spots, sun damage, and rosacea, and the Frax resurfacing laser drills holes into the skin instead of completely removing the outer layer of skin. This results in a quicker recovery with less down time. This is great for wrinkles, scars and overall texture of the skin. Jimmy explained to me that most places charge per area, but Jimmy does neck up and the hands are included. The Frax laser is a brand-new technology and is considered the “Gucci” of all lasers.

J. Cohen's Day Spa also offers membership deals. The cost to be a member is $99 for nail care; $199 for Massage and Nail Care and $399 for everything they offer. Members receive discounts on all services for the year of their membership.

URGE Miami Festival Returns This Thanksgiving Weekend

URGE Miami Festival returns this Thanksgiving weekend with three massive nighttime events and three sizzling daytime fetes including the Royal Palm Pool Party and the legendary Beach Party on the sands of South Beach. Produced by Luis Morera, Billy Kemp and Hilton Wolman, the LGBTQ+ festival weekend will take place November 25-28 and will feature a list of the world's most famous circuit DJs including Alex Lo (this issues cover model), Dan Slater, Edu Quintas, Enrico Meloni, Jerac, Joe Gauthreaux, Marvin Ayy, Mauro Mozart, Paulo Fragoso, Suri and Tom Stephan.

“After the massive success of last year's Thanksgiving festival, we are excited to do it all over again, bigger and better than ever before,” says Hilton Wolman.

URGE Miami Festival kicks off Friday, November 25 at 10pm when Barcelona's Matinee Group makes its triumphant return to Miami with Matinee Pervert XXL. DJ's Tom Stephan and Alex Lo will take over the decks at Miami's newest nightclub, M2 Nightclub, for their raunchiest production ever. The historic nightclub (formerly known as Paragon/Glam Slam/Level/Mansion and Icon) has been transformed with $10 million in upgrades to structure, sound, and lighting. At 35,000 square feet, it will be the largest party ever thrown by URGE. Matinee Group is promising a level of production seldom seen before and they are flying in some of the hottest dancers from Spain and Europe to keep the dancefloor shaking into the wee morning hours.

At 2pm on Saturday is the Royal Palm South Beach pool party, presented by Eliad Cohen as part of the Papa World Tour. DJs Dan Slater and Paulo Fragoso will raise the temps with their high energy beats,

making extensive use of the incredible facilities offered by Royal Palm. Expect plenty of wet and wild, splish and splashy fun and gorgeous men in skimpy bikinis.

The weekend's Saturday night Main Event, URGE Warrior, will take place at one of Miami's premier film studios, home to some of the biggest blockbusters on HBO Max and Netflix, on their largest sound stage. DJs Suri and Mauro Mozart will battle it out with incredible beats in a spectacular production, sure to amaze.

It leads to the signature event of the weekend: the long-established Sunday Beach Party on the sands of South Beach. The sandblast begins at 2pm with DJ's

Gauthreaux from the USA dropping the beats on the largest stage and dancefloor and most colossal VIP deck this event has seen before. Kidd Madonny and his company, 3DX, are building the decor for the party and like last year, it will incorporate URGE Miami Festival's yellow and white retro resort and cabana influenced theme.

“Circuit fans come from all over the world to experience one of America's biggest LGBTQ beach parties,” Wolman explains. “We will not disappoint.”

This year's host hotel is the Royal Palm South Beach. With 400 rooms, more than a

quarter of which are suites, the Royal Palm is one of South Beach's largest hotels, superbly located directly on the beach on Collins at the end of Ocean Drive. It offers a superior experience and will serve as the location of URGE Miami Festival's Welcome Center and Saturday Pool Party. It is also a short walk to a majority of the parties.

A portion of the proceeds from URGE Miami Festival will once again benefit Miami Beach Pride, a not-for-profit organization that works to unite members of the LGBTQ community by celebrating the unique spirit and culture of its people.

GA and VIP tickets are available, as is the popular 24-hour pass that includes the Sunday Beach Party, Sunday night event and Monday morning Afterhours event.

Tickets for URGE Miami Festival are available at: Urgemiamifestival.com.

It’s Time for a Queer Host on The Daily Show

Five LGBTQ+ Comedians Qualified to Take Trevor Noah’s Seat

Trevor Noah, longtime host of “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” says he will leave the show after seven years, opening up an opportunity for a fresh voice to fill that influential role.

In a tumultuous political climate where LGBTQ+ issues are the hot potato that terrible politicians love to bat back and forth, who better to provide pithy commentary than a queer comedian? We nominate these five rising stars and veteran funny people.

Patti Harrison

Jon Stewart laid the groundwork, Noah carried the torch and Patti Harrison, the whip-smart, take-no-shit comedian (who got kicked off Twitter for hilariously impersonating Sia as Nilla Wafers — yes, the cookies) will bring it home for a new generation. At 31, Harrison is a vocal member of the young millennial and Gen Z generation and an out transwoman, which means

74 | HotspotsMagazine.com
Photos: Sean Gallagher, Comedy Central

she understands what's at stake for her generation's future and can speak powerfully against the recent alarming national political and social backslide into the 1950s. She is also the comedian most likely to take the audience on Andy Kaufman-esque rides to unexpected places, something we can get behind.

Kate McKinnon

Lesbian heroine McKinnon is a no-brainer to replace Noah. The veteran “SNL” actor left the show this year after a decade playing a laundry list of audience favorites, but her tenure there might be most linked to her

earnest, deeply funny impersonation of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We'd love to see her drop some Ginsburns on some welldeserving political figures. There's more to McKinnon than her epic RBG portrayal, too. Remember when she channeled what every non-Trump voting American was feeling when Hillary Clinton lost in 2016? Her post-election cold open, as Clinton singing Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah” was as cathartic as it was powerful — a reminder to cherish what we had and a call to gather strength for the battles yet to come at an unprecedented moment in history (no matter what Rob Schneider thinks). Add McKinnon's universal likability and she's a candidate for the job who would be uniquely positioned to serve as a bridge between constantly warring political factions.

Bowen Yang

Another “SNL” standout, Yang has been coming into his own over the past year, as evidenced by runaway Hulu hit “Fire Island.” But it's his off-the-cuff takes in interviews that reveal why he'd make an excellent “Daily Show” host. When Q Syndicate editorial director Chris Azzopardi interviewed Yang this summer, he discussed the “SNL” sketch “Pride Month Song,” a fresh look at a queer culture staple. Ever down-to-earth, Yang said,

Photo: ABC Photo: instagram.com/party_harderson Photo: instagram.com/fayedunaway

“...Pride is kind of exhausting. And it's kind of not what you expect it to be: You think it's gonna be this amazing thing and it actually ends up being really stressful and logistically a nightmare and someone has a meltdown at some point.” It's that kind of Midwestern-via-New-York authenticity that contributes to Yang's crosscultural appeal. It would be compelling to see Bowen breaking down complicated news events in a way we can all understand and identify with. Yang is a master at keeping it real.

Twenty years later, Sykes has remained relevant (and side-splittingly funny) and has been an active political rabble rouser. There's no doubt a Sykes-led “Daily Show” would be well-written, pithy, pointedly sassy, and devoid of fluff. Sykes would just get the job done while casually annihilating people who casually support stances like eliminating queer rights.

Randy Rainbow

Maybe it's time for “The Daily Show” to become a variety show. Randy Rainbow's snarky political musical theater might just be magical in the way it lures listeners in with familiar Broadway intros and then whacks them over the head with lasertargeted observations about terrible people. Sometimes, a spoonful of sugar really does help the medicine go down. And at a time when we can all agree that real world news is almost too much to comprehend some days, we could use a little sugar, especially when it's spice in disguise.

Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes' trademark no-nonsense takes on current events (and takedowns of current idiots) would liven up the “Daily Show” desk. She's been at this for a while, too. Take her “Daily Show with Jon Stewart” appearance way back in 2001, where she took down then President George W. Bush, remarking, “I pray for the man every day… and I advise everybody else to do the same. We in trouble, Jon! We are in trouble. It's the foreign policy — the man has only left the country twice, and that was to Mexico. I have traveled more than the president. That's a problem.”

It would be interesting to see Rainbow approach the “Daily Show” anchor desk with a Colbert-esque approach, where we're never quite sure if he's serious, but we're definitely sure he's killing fascists with every expertly crafted lyrical delight.

Transgender Awareness Month What It Means to Me!

November is Transgender Awareness Month, a time to honor our vibrant transgender and gender non-conforming community, celebrate the progress made for transgender rights, and recommit to ending the unacceptable – and, unfortunately, widespread –discrimination still faced by transgender people.

I thought it appropriate to ask some of our Transgender community members what this month means to them.

November is Transgender Awareness Month. This means all month we take action in Educating ourselves and our allies about the history and challenges we as transgender individuals face every day, as well as celebrate the individual authenticity of those exploring their gender identity.

Transgender Awareness Month is a critical time to educate others on the Trans Community. This month is also a time to remember those trans individuals that have lost their lives to anti-trans violence/hate, culminating in the Trans Day of Remembrance that occurs every November. While we mourn the loss of our trans siblings, we also take the time to educate others about our community. Intersectionality plays a large role in the trans community and is celebrated during the month of November. Not every trans person looks the same, acts the same, or goes through the same transition process. It is important to celebrate the diversity of our trans community- be that ethnicity and race, age, cultural background, and how they came to be who they are today. This month allows me to celebrate my own journey and the journeys others take to live authentically.

Diane Strano

Growing up in the 1950s, I was unaware that there were any other people like me. It was very difficult to relate to others in my neighborhood with whom I had nothing in common. Today our young transgender people have resources that I never would have dreamed was possible and I am grateful to see that they do not have to go through the isolation I was put through. Transgender Awareness Month brings to fruition an avenue to discuss the difficulties transgender people go through and the joy that is derived from being supported by others. In today's polarized world there are forces determined to turn us back to those ugly days before we were allowed to be open about our feelings. The antidote to such poison is to make people aware that we are not hideous monsters who prey on children and stalk women's restrooms. To the young transgender and gender nonconforming people I wish you the best and trust that society will ultimately accept you as a productive and essential member of society. Remember, the truth ultimately wins over fear.

Tatiana Williams

November is a monumental month and pivotal in our ongoing transgender movement. As an advocate and the Executive Director of a Trans-Led Organization, during this month we honor our siblings who are doing great work to advance our movement; and we memorialize those that have lost their lives due to senseless violence. Unfortunately, as a Black Transwoman who transitioned over 30 years ago, we did not have a month and/or opportunities to bring awareness to our struggles or highlight our resiliency. To me, this month is about strength, courage, resilience, and empowerment.

To be acknowledged with a month honoring transgender individuals within mainstream society is humbling and appreciated. For those of us who were part of the fight for the better part of 50 years, we have finally been recognized. This is due to a collaborative effort of so many individuals like me who live and work hard every day as our true selves. I spent most of my adult life in fear of rejection, discrimination and even death. Our community has a long road ahead to continue the fight for equality and the vision of total acceptance regardless of lifestyle and gender. I never considered myself homosexual, but it was the only label that worked and the only safe space for me. When I found the courage to transition, I did so with an ability to blend in because I had guidance and support. This month should be recognized by anyone who is like me, aspires to be included and deserves to live as their true self. There are no mistakes. We are born as humans. Our genetic code comes from birth. It is a choice to accept it and live it. Many believe we chose this. That is not the case. Mother Nature and whatever God you believe in chose this for us. The path was set before we could walk or talk. Our parents, peers and surroundings didn't change us. Society tried to contain who we are and labeled us as not normal. I say, "we are who we are" and "define normal." This is my normal

Morgan Mayfaire

November means many things to me, as a man of Transgender experience. It's the time of the year when most LGBTQIA+ organizations and communities center and put focus on my community, in other words we are finally 'seen.' Everyone has a Transgender & GNC event. TransSocial & The Mckenzie Project opened both our Trans & GNC centered "First Trans centers in South Florida, one in Miami and the other in Broward. Awards are given to honor Trans folks and our many dead are remembered. Every year the numbers shake us and remind us of the dangerous world we live in and how brave those of us that choose to be activists are.

Arianna Lint

his month is important because we as trans people are making ourselves visible and known. As a child I grew up not knowing actually what a trans person was. Now knowing myself as being trans and being able to educate others on myself is a positive thing for me. I love November because we as trans people can show people who we are, what we are, and how we live our lives. In November we as trans people gets a chance to show the world that we matter, and we are part of today's society making changes and a positive impact in the community.

Hadestown Makes Its South Florida Premiere Arsht Center

Dec 6-11

Hadestown will make its anticipated South Florida premiere at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County from December 6–11. Hadestown is the most honored show of the 2018-2019 Broadway season. In addition to the show's eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, it has been honored with four Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical, and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical. This acclaimed new show by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today... and always. The national tour includes Miami native Alex Lugo (Swing, u/s Eurydice) as part of the cast.

Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his

92 | HotspotsMagazine.com

wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell's beguiling melodies and Chavkin's poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.

The North American touring production of Hadestown stars Nathan Lee Graham as Hermes, Chibueze Ihuoma as Orpheus, Maria-Christina Oliveras as Persephone, Matthew Patrick Quinn as Hades, and Hannah Whitley as Eurydice.

The Fates are played by Dominique Kempf, Belén Moyano, Nyla Watson. The Workers Chorus features Jordan Bollwerk, Lindsey Hailes, Courtney Lauster, Eddie Noel Rodríguez, and Jamari Johnson Williams. Swings for the tour include Tyla Collier, Ian Coulter-Buford, Alex Lugo, J. Antonio Rodriguez, and Cecilia Trippiedi.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Natahan Lee Graham who plays the lead of Hermes, for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

At what age did you begin performing?

Oh my gosh it was a long time ago. My grandparents and parents got me started in this business because it was something I was good at, and they thought, why not encourage it.

What was your first professional gig? A production of "The Wiz," and I was a munchkin. They had some local hires, and I was one of them.

When did you know performing would be your career?

I am not really sure when that happened, but I know it didn't come till much later. I mean I had always done it, but to consider it to be an actual career that paid my bills was a completely different ballgame. Hadestown has taken Broadway by storm, is there additional pressure touring in this show?

God no, if anything it's the opposite, because it's so beloved you feel a sense of honor and privilege to do it right. If anything, it's encouraging pressure. You

don't have to convince people the piece is good; you just have to do it well.

Other than this one, what has been your favorite role so far?

I don't have a favorite, but I do have a theme. I played the MC in Cabaret and I am doing Hermes now…. They are roles that guide the audience through or become the moral center of the audience. What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but want to)?

It used to be the leading player in Pippin, but now I am too old to play that part. I am working smarter not harder these days. At some point I would love to play James Baldwin. Also, I would love to play some non-gender conforming role. A role that is other worldly like a mystical creature that is genderless.

Is it hard being on the road all the time? I haven't been on tour since 98, so its new again for me. I like doing these week runs in different cities as there is this excitement of going to a new town. What's difficult is the 8 shows a week, plus all the Covid Protocols and keeping myself healthy while traveling. I take this very seriously. How well do you and your castmates get along?

OMG the show wouldn't be as good if we didn't all get along so well. We are a family that takes care of each other. I am such a big team player when it comes to casts, and I am all about putting out the best product with the best team. The way to do that is for

everyone to get along and be there for each other.

Describe yourself in 3 words? Elegant, patient, and observant What do you do for fun?

I enjoy watching great documentaries and other great work on screen. I love going to the theater and the opera. Hadestown will have a short Thanksgiving Break, and I am definitely going to see a Broadway show and to the Met. I als o like to hike and walk a lot. What should our readers expect from this touring company of "Hadestown"?

Pure excitement. It's so suspenseful you want to follow every character and find out what happens next. Its such an exciting show it will move you in every way possible.

The Leather Masked Ball Celebrates Its 17th Annual Event!

On Friday, November 25th, the Lambda Men's Brotherhood is proud to present the 17th annual edition of The Leather Masked Ball. Since its inception, the Leather Masked Ball has been the largest leather/fetish charity fundraising event in the SouthEast. With funds from the event, as well as other events throughout the year, the Lambda Men's Brotherhood has been able to raise over a quarter of a million dollars for at-need nonprofits in the community. Past beneficiaries have included Broward House, The Pride Center, Gilda's Club of South Florida, The Pet Project For Pets, Pantry of Broward, Kids in Distress, and many other vital community resources.

Currently, funds are being raised for an initiative named the Lambda History Series. The intent is to provide a free-to-access LGBTQ+ history curriculum for high school students, educators, and parents. This planned curriculum will include lesson plans created by and vetted by educators, and since the passing of “Don't Say Gay” here in Florida has become more important than ever.

This year's Leather Masked Ball will be held in the Crystal Ballroom at The Venue (on the back side of The Manor). Entertainment will include sets by DJ Aulden Brown, DJ Daniel Kristopherre, and a special show by Damien Lenore. While the event is themed as a leather masquerade ball, as a charity event there is no dress code to attend. While the event is 21 and up, everyone is welcome, no matter your gender, status in the community, sexuality, or experience with leather or fetish. The Lambda Men's Brotherhood is an organization that celebrates and welcomes everyone who wants to do good for the community and strives to continue a legacy of gay philanthropy.

If you wish to attend this year's Leather Masked Ball, tickets can be purchased in advance at LMBFTL.org. Tickets are $39 in advance, or $55 at the door. World AIDS Day: Healing Through the Arts

On December 1, 2022, from 7– 9:30 pm, Care Resource is hosting a tribute to World AIDS Day with the theme, “Healing Through the Arts” on the rooftop of their Midtown Miami health center located on 3510 Biscayne Boulevard.

The night includes dance performances by the United Ballroom Houses of South Florida, an array of donated and radiant art pieces, poetry readings, a candlelight vigil, and more.

This event incorporates four pillars to ending the epidemic that include: diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and response.

This tribute is an opportunity to recognize, honor and celebrate the medical advancements made during the past 30 years.

According to Steven Santiago, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, “World AIDS Day reminds us that HIV has not gone away. The event's

four pillars of diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and response are crucial to increasing awareness, fighting prejudice, and improving education. Diagnosis is a reminder that there are still people living with HIV who are not aware. Prevention is a reminder about the need to further increase methods to reduce the rate of infection. Treatment is a reminder that hope is available for people who do not know their status. The pillar of Response is critical as it is a reminder to the community that new outbreaks are happening all the time. "

Observed worldwide on December 1, World AIDS Day is the moment of the year when millions of people come together across the globe to commemorate those who have been lost to HIV, applaud the progress made in responding to the crises, and recommit to ending the epidemic.

HOW TO GET A SEXY SIX-PACK FOR THE HOLIDAYS!

The muscles that make up what is often referred to as your “six pack” are the abdominals, and they are also an important part of your core. Abdominals function in every movement you make from getting out of a chair to running on the beach. And yes, they make a sexy impression because the very sight of them imply hard work and discipline! Let's

talk now about how to maintain that trim, healthy midsection.

The muscle group referred to as the abs is composed of four major muscles – the internal and external obliques, the transverse abdominis, and the rectus abdominis which reveals itself on a lean torso as your “sixpack”. There is really no such thing as “spot training” the upper or lower abs. Yet because

120 | HotspotsMagazine.com

this is such a large muscle group, a wide variety of exercises are recommended.

Train your abs 3-4 times per week for a good 20 minutes and work them to exhaustion. Four or five good exercises using 3-4 sets of 25 reps should leave your middle feeling tight and burning. Stay away from straight leg lifts and hanging knee raises—these tax the hip flexors rather than your abs and you'll end up with an aching lower back.

For optimal results, the crunch and variations of this movement should be at the heart of every successful ab routine. Begin a crunch in a supine position lying on the floor or mat. Place your feet on a bench or exercise ball with your hips and knees flexed at 90 degrees. Rest your arms across your chest. This is the starting position.

For proper technique, move the chin to the chest. Pull the rib cage up and over the pelvis. Keep the lower back flat and continue to crunch upward, elbows and chest to the knees. Pause and make sure to contract your abs as hard as possible. Work in a slow, controlled manner concentrating on maintaining tension in the ab muscles. Add resistance by

clasping a 10 or 15 lb. weight to your chest as you crunch.

A cable crunch can be performed on any cable machine. Attach a rope handle to the pulley and place a pad on which to rest your knees about 3 feet in front of the weight stack. Facing the machine, grasp the rope and lower yourself into a kneeling position. Place your hands at the back of your head, with the rope above you and your elbows close to your ears. Slowly curl your torso down and forward –round your back – don't try to keep it flat –bringing your elbows to the ground. Do all ab exercises slowly.

Train obliques with side bends. Stand upright with your feet shoulder width apart, grasping a moderate-weight dumbbell in your left hand and placing your right hand on your head. This is the starting position. Bend to your left as far as possible, slowly returning to upright as you feel the obliques on your right contract. Don't go past the vertical (starting) position. Switch the hand holding the dumbbell after you have completed all your reps for one side.

Remember, a dynamite six-pack depends upon how faithful you are to three things. First, make sure to work abs regularly and hard. Second, do your cardio to burn fat. Finally, adhere to a low-fat diet rich in protein.

HAROLD J BLOTCHER,

Dear Andreus, Usually, my boyfriend and I go barhopping together, unless we have plans with our friends separately. A few weeks ago, he made plans to go out with his friends, and I was planning to actually stay in that night. Well, one of my friends called me and asked me to meet up with some of the guys for drinks. So, I headed out, and as we were passing one of the bars, I see my boyfriend kissing some guy. And it wasn't just a peck, it was a deep French kissing session. He did not see me, and I quickly moved my friends along, hoping that they did not see it. I don't know what to do. I haven't said anything to him, but clearly things are just not the same. He came home at his usual time that night, but I have no idea what happened. What do I do? Sincerely, Joffrey A. Dear Joffrey, Clearly this bothers you. And honestly, the longer you wait to say something, the worse it is going to get. You are putting yourself through emotional turmoil. I cannot tell you what to do, but I would address the situation. You need to understand the dynamics of your relationship, and where you stand with him. Are you guys open? Are you committed? This brings about questions that need

clarity. Don't make accusations, just gently reveal that you observed the kiss. His response will tell you everything you want to know.

Dear Andreus, My boyfriend and I both have social media. We really only use it to stay connected to our friends. Recently, my boyfriend told me that he does not like me liking other guys pictures and posts. He says that I should not be giving attention to other guys. I explained to him that the whole purpose of social media is to share, and that people expect likes or comments on their posts. I don't say anything inappropriate; I usually just click like. I feel like he is being dramatic. Am I wrong? Sincerely, Andrew R. Dear Andrew, I feel that his response is extreme. If you are only liking pictures or posts, and you are not disrespecting your relationship in anyway (such as flirting or making inviting comments), then there should not be an issue. Maybe you need to talk about why he is bothered. There are likely some insecurities on his part. Could be trauma from a former relationship, or some other source of trust issues. Regardless, that is not your fault. Try to talk through it without arguing, and maybe he can shed some light on why he is so bothered. Otherwise, click like on everything he posts! Seems like he wants the attention.
