Black, Queer, and in Love
‘Almost Us’ Is the Spring Rom-Com We’ve Been Waiting For
By John Stein
With humor, chemistry, and heart, Almost Us explores what happens when desire collides with power—and when love becomes inseparable from legacy and community survival.
Premiering April 17 on Watch VIM, the new romantic comedy from filmmaker Anthony Bawn opens with a fiery one-night stand between Darren, a closeted and politically connected real estate developer, and Jason, an openly queer and charismatic community organizer.
What begins as a moment of passion soon becomes far more complicated when Darren’s luxury redevelopment project threatens the
Baldwin Cultural Center, a beloved sanctuary and organizing hub for Phoenix’s marginalized communities.
“There are awkward run-ins and plenty of laughs along the way,” says Bawn, who also stars as Jason. “The connection between Darren and Jason forces them to face what they’ve both been avoiding: the difference between wanting someone and being willing to be seen with them.”
Speaking from his Phoenix-based studio, Bawn shared more about the film, his streaming platform, and the personal experiences that helped shape “Almost Us.”
What inspired you to launch your own streaming platform, Watch VIM?
What inspired me to launch Watch VIM was the need for ownership and access. I got tired

Anthony Bawn
of creating stories and always feeling like we had to wait for permission from someone else to be seen. I wanted to build a home for original content, independent films, and voices that don’t always get prioritized by the larger platforms. Watch VIM became bigger than just streaming. It’s about creating opportunity, visibility, and a space where our stories can live on our own terms. How extensive is the Watch VIM catalog right now?
We have a growing catalog of films and series, and a strong portion of that content comes directly from my own productions and projects developed under VIM. A lot of what’s on the platform reflects the kind of stories I care deeply about telling: character-driven, emotional, bold, and rooted in communities that deserve more screen time. At the same time, the goal is to keep expanding so the platform becomes a home for other filmmakers who need a place to showcase their work. What inspired the story behind Almost Us?
Almost Us was inspired by the emotional gray areas in love—relationships that feel real, deep, and meaningful but still somehow never fully become what you hoped they would. I wanted to explore timing, vulnerability, fear, and connection, especially through the lens of Black queer men, in a way that felt honest but still entertaining. It’s a romance comedy, but underneath there’s a lot of heart. It’s really about the tension between what we say we want and what we’re ready for. The Baldwin Cultural Center plays an important role in the film. What do spaces like that mean to you personally?
Community centers represent safety, connection, and possibility. They’re places where people can show up as they are, find resources, build relationships, and feel seen. That’s especially important in communities where people may not always feel supported at home, at work, or in
society in general. Including that in the film was intentional because those spaces really do matter. They can be the beginning of healing, growth, friendship, and even love. At its core, the film asks what people are willing to risk for love. Is that something you personally relate to?
Absolutely—100 percent. There are so many moments in life where you know what you want, but going after it means being honest, vulnerable, and sometimes risking comfort, relationships, or the version of yourself people are used to. As a creative, as a business owner, and just as a person, I’ve had to make decisions that required faith and courage. So that theme is very personal to me.
Have you ever dated someone like Darren—or do you see a little bit of him in yourself?
I think most people have either met a Darren, loved a Darren, or at some point been a little like Darren themselves. Fortunately for me, my husband was the first guy I dated—and I married him! (Laughs.) That’s a whole other story. What makes Darren interesting is that he’s layered. He may care deeply, but he’s also dealing with his own fears, walls, and emotional timing. I can understand parts of that because none of us are perfect when it comes to love.
What do you hope audiences take away from the film?
by Hassan Rasul
More than anything, I hope audiences walk away feeling something real. I want them to laugh, reflect, and maybe even see themselves in the story. I hope the film reminds people that love is complicated, timing matters, and honesty with yourself is just as important as honesty with someone else. On a bigger level, I hope Almost Us shows that Black queer love—along with the joy, confusion, and vulnerability that come with it—deserves to be centered on screen in a full and honest way.
“Almost Us” premieres April 17 exclusively on Watch VIM.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Tess Terpos for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
At what age did you begin skating and how did it start?
I started when I was 5. My parents signed me up for a lot of different sports and I fell in love with skating immediately.
What do you enjoy about performing?
Connecting with other performers and audience members. Feeling the Disney On Ice magic!
What are your professional goals?
To share my love of skating and performing with as many people as possible; to always hold onto the joy and dreams of my five-year-old self!
What is your favorite memory on the ice?
I will never forget my very first professional show opening night. I was so overwhelmed with excitement and happiness that I cried as soon as I got off the ice!
If you could be a professional athlete in any other sport, what would it be and
perform and wear pretty costumes!
If you weren't performing, what would you be doing for
Something creative, maybe choreographing or directing the performance
What is the best and worst thing about living on the road?
The best thing is exploring new places and spending time with so many cool people from all over the world! I love exploring the city we’re currently in, finding a cute coffee shop or any local tourist destinations. The worst thing is probably trying to keep your suitcases organized.
What's something a lot of people don't know about you?
I’m an open book, so I can’t think of anything!
What are some of your interests/hobbies/favorite pastimes?
I love to paint, read, write journals and I also love to relax and watch movies with friends
What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully, many more years of professional skating with Disney On Ice, lots of growth, new experiences and opportunities!

Ok… Let me guess. You walked into the gym, looked at the barbell on the floor and thought, that does not look very exciting. No fancy machine, no complicated setup, just a bar sitting there waiting. But do not let the simplicity fool you. That barbell might be holding the secret to building one seriously HOT body.
Deadlifts should really be called Live lifts – They are one of those exercises that separate the tourists from the workers in the gym. It is raw, powerful and incredibly effective. You pick the weight up from the floor and stand tall with it. Sounds simple, right? But once you start doing them properly, you will quickly realize that almost every muscle in your body has been invited to the party.
What Is a Deadlift?
A deadlift is one of the most functional exercises you can do. In simple terms, you lift weight from the floor to a standing position using your legs and hips while keeping your core strong and your spine stable. It mirrors everyday movements like
lifting groceries, moving furniture or picking up something heavy from the ground.
Why Deadlifts Are a HOTbodies Favorite
Deadlifts are the ultimate multitasker. Instead of isolating just one muscle group, they recruit nearly your entire body.
Benefits include:
• Builds powerful glutes and hamstrings
• Strengthens your lower back and core
• Improves posture and stability
• Burns more calories because it uses large muscle groups
• Develops functional real-world strength
And let’s be honest. Few things feel as empowering as lifting something heavy off the ground and realizing your body is stronger than you thought. You’d wish you had released your inner Hercules earlier.
Types of Deadlifts
One of the best things about deadlifts is how versatile they are. Different variations shift the focus slightly and keep your workouts interesting.
Conventional Deadlift
The classic version. Feet about hip width apart with your hands outside the knees. Great for building overall strength.
Romanian Deadlift
This version keeps the legs slightly bent and emphasizes the hamstrings and glutes.
Sumo Deadlift
A wider stance with toes turned outward. This variation targets the inner thighs and can feel more comfortable for some lifters.
Single Leg Deadlift
A balance challenge that lights up the glutes and core while improving stability.
How to Perform a Proper Deadlift:
Technique matters more than the weight on the bar.
• Stand with feet about hip width apart
• Keep the bar close to your shins
• Push your hips back as you hinge forward
• Keep your chest lifted and your back neutral
• Drive through your heels and squeeze your glutes at the top
Think of it less as lifting with your back and more like pushing the floor away with your legs.
Breathing Matters
Proper breathing keeps your core engaged and protects your spine.
• Take a deep breath before lifting
• Brace your core as if preparing for a punch
• Exhale slowly once you reach the top of the movement
This helps create stability and power throughout the lift.
Safety First
As powerful as deadlifts are, they are not for everyone. People dealing with serious lower back injuries, spinal disc issues, or those recovering from certain hip or knee injuries should approach this movement with caution or avoid it altogether until cleared by a professional. The good news is that you can still train the same muscle
groups with safer alternatives. Exercises like glute bridges, hip thrusts, kettlebell lifts from an elevated surface, or even the leg press can help build strong glutes and legs without placing as much stress on the lower back. The key is always listening to your body and choosing movements that build strength without causing pain.
Final Rep:
Deadlifts are not just about strength. They are about confidence. Every rep reminds you that your body is capable of more than you think. Start light, focus on form and gradually build your way up.
Because in the world of HOTbodies, strength is essential.

Did We Miss Anything?
Paula Pell is a face you might know from “Girls5eva” and she’s a writing voice you know from “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock.” Her spouse, Janine Brito, herself a comedy writer, worked on “One Day at a Time” and co-starred on “Girls5eva.”
Together, they’ve written a buddy comedy for Kim Kardashian. It’s called “The
Bunny-in-drag version of her persona and this really could be something special. And we’ll be real: we’re looking forward to seeing her pull it off.
Fifth Wheel,” in which a hot stranger (KK) crashes a reunion of high school friends and wreaks havoc. The high school friends in question: Fortune Feimster, Casey Wilson, Brenda Song and Nikki Glaser. It’s going to be directed by Eva Longoria and the whole thing is co-produced by Kardashian and Will Ferrell. The supporting cast is solid, a full bench of stellar women of comedy. We think all Kardashian has to do is show up and channel an amplified, Bugs
Sorry for the misleading headline. Connor Storrie, now known to all of you for his Russian accent and sex scenes with Hudson Williams on “Heated Rivalry,” has far from peaked, but he is in talks to co-star in a new comedy from A24 called “Peaked.” What’s it about? Two mean girls attend their 10-year-reunion and try to relive their glory days, except those glory days traumatized everyone else, so it appears a comeuppance might be due. And what’s Storrie’s role? That’s currently under wraps. But — and this is equally exciting — it will star Molly Gordon (“The Bear”), who is also directing, and “SNL” writer Allie Levitan, who is also handling the script. Rounding out the cast: Laura Dern, “Sex Education” alum Emma Mackey, “Bridgerton” star Simone Ashley, and queer “Bachelorette” cast member Gabby Windey. They could have just led with Laura Dern — sorry, Storrie, nothing personal — and we’d already be in.
Birgit Fostervold
You’ve got another thing coming when “The Ballad of Judas Priest” storms onto big screens after its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. In case you’re unaware, Judas Priest is a legendary British metal band fronted by Rob Halford. Until the 1990s they were most famous for their music and an unsettling, headline-making lawsuit brought against the band accusing them of encouraging teenage suicide (it was dismissed). Then Mr. Halford made metal history by coming out as gay — which some fans predicted, as he was already quite the leather daddy — which only endeared them to their audience even more. The doc comes from Canadian filmmaker Sam Dunn (“Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey”) and Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, and it features appearances from metal enthusiast Jack Black alongside an impressive roster of music royalty: the late Ozzy Osbourne, the members of Metallica, Run-DMC and Smashing Pumpkins co-founder Billy Corgan. No U.S. release date is set yet but stay tuned.
‘Clashing’ with Lukas Gage
There’s always some kind of holiday movie in production somewhere, with someone. And now it’s Lukas Gage’s turn. And it’s not just another Hallmark joint — this one has history behind it. It’s called “Clashing Through the Snow,” and it’s purported to be a Gen Z update of the Steve Martin-John Candy ’80s classic “Planes Trains and Automobiles,” about two men struggling against weather and flight delays to get home in time for
Thanksgiving. We don’t know the specifics of the plot yet (Thanksgiving like before? Christmas? New Year’s Eve?) but queer “White Lotus” star Gage will be joined by Michelle Randolph (“Scream 7”) and Christopher Briney (“The Summer I Turned Pretty”), and all of it in the hands of actress-turned-director Carlson Young (“Upgraded”). Assuming it drops by the end of this year, we’ll keep a plate warm.
Romeo San Vicente always wants seconds.

Dog Grooming Advice to Keep Pets Clean and Healthy
By: Family Features
Regular grooming can keep your dog looking and smelling his or her best, but it's also important for maintaining health. If you choose to groom at home rather than opting for (often expensive) professional care, it's also an opportunity to examine your pet for potential concerns.
A proper grooming routine starts with the right tools. Consider these suggestions from The Humane Society of the United States:
· Dog-friendly nail clippers
· Rubber-bristled brush
· Dog-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste
· Dog-friendly shampoo and conditioner
· Cotton balls
· Blunt-ended shears or small clippers with guides
· Microfiber towel
Trimming Nails
When your dog's nails nearly touch the ground, it's time for a trim, typically every 34 weeks. Trimming the part of the nail that turns down helps prevent pain and damage to paws.
If your dog has white nails, avoid cutting
Photo cour

the “quick,” the pink part that's visible on white nails, which bleeds when cut. For dark nails, simply trim a bit at a time until evidence of the quick is visible.
Bathing and Brushing
Frequency for baths and brushing depends on your dog's coat type – be sure to research optimal grooming schedules based on his or her breed. In general, The Humane Society of the United States recommends these guidelines:
· Short, smooth or wiry coat: Brush once a week with a rubber-bristled brush.
· Long, silky or curly coat: Brush once a day with a rubber-bristled brush or wire slicker brush. Use a steel comb to prevent tangles or mats, if necessary.
· Double coat: Use an undercoat rake or de-shedding tool to gently de-shed once a week in addition to regular brushing routines.
When it's bath time, use a shampoo formulated for dogs and a damp cloth or cotton ball to clean around the eyes and ears without pushing anything into the eyes or ears. Dry with a microfiber towel or hair dryer on a low setting.
Cutting Fur
Be careful and work slowly to avoid mistakes and keep your dog calm and comfortable. Brush, bathe and completely dry
prior to cutting fur with blunt-ended shears or small clippers with guide combs. Specifically trim hair covering the eyes and private areas and between your pup's paw pads. It may be helpful to watch a tutorial online to ensure success.
Brushing Teeth
You can prevent gum disease and plaque buildup by brushing your dog's teeth with a soft toothbrush and dog-friendly toothpaste. Make sure your pet is comfortable and start slow, staying on the outside surfaces of teeth and gently rubbing back and forth. Focus on the area where the tooth surface meets the gum.

Habits Made Easy: Update Your Pet's Health and Wellness Routine Without Fuss
By: Family Features
Pets are more than companions –they're family – and keeping them healthy can be simple, enjoyable and rewarding. Today's pet parents may be busier than ever, yet they're also more committed to wellness than previous generations That means approaching their furry friends' unique needs with the same balance, care and attention to overall well-being as they do their own.
In fact, according to the 2021 Human Animal Bond Research Institute Benchmark Survey of Pet Owners, increased knowledge about the health benefits of the human-animal bond led 91% of pet owners to say they would be
more likely to take better care of their
et health isn't just about food, however. A holistic approach to wellness combines daily supplements, dental care, exercise, mental enrichment and proactive health, with many owners looking for ways to simplify routines to support their pets every day.
These practical ideas can help support a pet's overall wellness

balanced nutrition forms the foundation of wellness. Dog and cat parents are increasingly seeking customizable food and supplement solutions designed around their furry friend's age, needs and lifestyle. Agespecific formulations and products featuring natural, minimally processed ingredients and eco-friendly sourcing allow owners to support their pets' overall health, from mealtime to daily wellness routines.
Suppor t Healthy Skin and Coat
A pet's coat often reflects its overall health. Along with a balanced diet and plenty of water, adding a daily supplement can help support a natural shine. While professional grooming keeps dogs and cats looking their best, incorporating regular at-home brushing and bathing with a gentle shampoo strengthens the bond you share and provides an opportunity to spot any changes, like lumps or bumps.
Enhance Pet Wellness with Functional Suppor t
Even with a balanced diet, many pets may benefit from extra support to maintain their overall well-being. Functional supplements can help target specific needs, including joint mobility, immunity and stress relief. For example, NaturVet's easy-to-use Lickable supplements – available in Hip & Joint, Calming and Multi-Vitamin formulas for dogs and cats – offer a simple way to make wellness an effortless part of everyday life.
Promote Exercise and Mental Enrichment
Movement is essential to any wellness routine. Regular walks, agility activities and games help keep pets fit and happy. Physical exercise is only part of the puzzle, though. Interactive toys, puzzle feeders, scent games and agility training help dogs and cats stay mentally sharp, even on days when outdoor
activity is limited.
Create a Calming Home Environment
Dogs and cats can experience stress when routines aren't followed, just like people. Maintaining a consistent daily schedule and providing a quiet, comfortable space – such as a bed in a low-traffic area – can help promote calm, comfort and security.
By taking a few simple, consistent steps each day, pet parents can create a balanced, enjoyable wellness routine that keeps their furry family members healthy, happy and thriving. From functional supplements and daily care habits to exercise, mental enrichment and a calming environment, small efforts can make a big difference, turning everyday care into a rewarding part of life with your pet.

5 Easy Steps to Help Pet Owners Build Healthy Habits
Creating a consistent health and wellness routine doesn't have to be complicated. Consider these simple steps:
1. Star t slow. Introduce new supplements or activities gradually to avoid overwhelming pets.
2. Be aware. Review product labels and ingredient certifications to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your pet.
3. Incorporate naturally. Mix functional supplements into meals or use them as a reward for good behavior.
4. Stay consistent. Small daily actions can add up to long-term health and wellness.
5. Monitor and adjust. Work with a veterinarian to create a tailored plan and observe your pet's energy, mobility and mood, adjusting as needed.
