On Wednesday January 13, Visit Lauderdale hosted its Annual Marketing Luncheon in the newly expanded Broward County Convention Center’s Atlantic Ballroom (the views are CRAZY), marking its most attended luncheon since 2019. The event provided industry partners and stakeholders with a detailed preview of the “Never Lose Your Splash” campaign and its activation across multiple channels throughout 2026. The event concluded with a call for continued partnership as Visit Lauderdale prepares to host IPW 2026 and advance future marketing initiatives designed to drive sustained visitation and long-term economic growth. This is an annual event I try not to miss as it attracts very influential people, and I learn so much about the coming years marketing plan for Lauderdale.

On Saturday, January 17th, there were 3 events. The first was My Hollywood Prides Pride 100 Brunch at the Doubletree Resort which honored Lisa Tuminello with the Trailblazer Ally Award and Spencer Battiest

with the Trailblazer Award.

The second was the Gamma Mu Foundation celebration East 2026’s “An Evening at Palm Royale,” where glamor gives back at Richardson Park. The night starred from RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17, Lucky Starzzz, Mesmerizing cabaret and burlesque performer Phoenix Hurtz and Zak Azoury, who captivated the audience with a vibrant fusion of modern pop, classic jazz and bossa nova.

The third was when Lantera, a South Florida–based nonprofit dedicated to mental health awareness and community connection, hosted the return of its popular winter fundraiser, Wilton Onesie Wonderland, which was a free-to-attend bar crawl for a night of fun, inclusion, and purpose. The evening began at Lit Bar, followed by stops at Spencer’s Corner Bar, Gym Bar, Tap That Ash, and a closing party at Hunters Nightclub. All this was done to raise money for this important organization!

featuring a spectacular Guitar Lighting Ceremony celebrating pride.

The very next day, Saturday, January 24th was when the main event for Hollywood Pride took place at Arts Park at Young Circle from 1 to 10pm and attracted thousands. They are proud to lead the way each year as the first Pride anywhere in the world — and that’s why they say Pride Starts Here! Congrats to Jeff, Tony and the entire My Hollywood Pride team on another successful year!

On Sunday January 25, Tony Lima (Sunserve’s CEO) celebrated his 52nd birthday with an Italian brunch at Salvo’s. A generous portion of the proceeds benefitted Sunserve’s programs and will be doubled by AHF. The packed restaurant event was hosted by Fay What?! with DJ Trevor Oldroyd spinning relaxing music and featured a high energy performance by Kelly Raspberry and back up dancers Rolly and Erick. We here at Hotspots Happening Out wish Tony a very happy

Years Strong 5

Black History Month has become ingrained in the fabric of Hotspots Happening Out. For 5 years, we have celebrated the month with community, friends and newbies to our world. Our Black History Month CAN Cookout Celebration is an event welcoming to all.

From day 1 of acquiring Hotspots Magazine in December of 2020, it has been our mission to diversify in all sense of the word. What was once just a focus on hot guys and the men that adored them transformed into an environment grounded in community and belonging, identifying critical areas of need and support in the scope of focus in which we work – events and media. A community need on so many levels was audibly screamed from the rooftops of Wilton Manors but fell on deaf ears.

So, we stepped in to acknowledge the muted pain that was echoing through the streets of our gay mecca. We built The CAN Cookout as a bridge between the Black and

Brown community and Wilton Manors, between the LGBTQ+ Black and Brown community and the White LGBTQ+ community, the Transgender Black community and the gay community, the straight Black and Brown community and the LGBTQ+ Black and Brown community.

A day where everyone could come together in Wilton Manors to celebrate Black Love.

We partnered with businesses that saw the need as well, where the pain was felt but the intolerance for bigotry, racism and hate was overwhelming unwelcomed. Unlikely establishments that the community overlooked as places that it would never happen at or didn’t even think to consider as anything but a fun-loving escapes from the hetero world. But it was happening in our own safe havens. Those who were willing to address, not only talked the talked but show their commitment to the community by partnering with us.

our food sponsor, we showed community that we could unite with the city to produce a free Black History Month Celebration that also gave back to Black and Brown led community organizations. The first CAN Cookout was a success with free entry, free food, free parking, music, laughter and entertainment at The Pride Center. What made the event even more rewarding is that we were able to establish, what is now an honor tradition, a fundraising component of The CAN Cookout. 100% of the drink sales for the event goes to a Black and Brown led community organization or a community organization that provides services to the LGBTQ+ Black and Brown community. The Ujima Men’s Collective was the first beneficiary organization. Since then, 100% of the drink proceeds have gone to BLINC, New Era Lodge No. 69., and the Legacy Builders.

By the 2nd year of The CAN Cookout, we moved the growing event from The Pride Center at Equality Park to Mickel Park – a sprawling green grass field in Wilton Manors that has a playground area and a kiddy water park. For the past 4 yeas, we managed to keep the celebration free to the public, still providing free food and free parking, while also adding cash prize spades and domino tournaments with free registration, HIV testing raffle for a roundtrip flight voucher and a family-friendly kids zone where kids from small age to teens can enjoy.

The CAN Cookout has truly become an annual Black History Month Celebration that everyone can come out to enjoy –community coming together.

“We would like to thank our incredible team that has been with us for the Past few years. Our Emcee First Lady Kendra, our Soul Food Chef Jay Jay, our Game Master Tonio, our Title Sponsor CAN Community Health, our Food Sponsor Sysco. The actress on being an Out100 Icon, saying yes to ‘All’s Fair’ without a script and becoming L.A.’s ‘mayor of Queerville’

If there’s one thing Niecy Nash-Betts knows how to do, it’s turn a moment into a metaphor. So, it feels almost too perfect — borderline sitcom-ironic — that before our conversation even begins, I realize she’s literally sitting in a closet. Because if Nash-Betts’ recent years have taught us anything, it’s that the closet is the last place she’s ever lived metaphorically. After decades of being embraced as an ally and only later discovering love with her “hersband,” Jessica Betts, whom she married in 2020, Nash-Betts has become one of Hollywood’s most joyful examples of what it looks like to live loudly, proudly and entirely on your own terms.

And yet here we are, surrounded by shelves and a large shoe collection, talking about her latest bold move: playing Emerald Greene — and executive producing — Ryan Murphy’s new queer fever dream, Hulu’s “All’s Fair,” which also stars Glenn

Close, Sarah Paulson, Kim Kardashian and Naomi Watts. It’s a role she signed onto before she ever even saw a script, a leap of faith that has since rewarded her with anal-stimulator PowerPoints, “Dynasty”-level melodrama and a whole lot of queer adoration.

From being crowned “mayor of Queerville” on the streets of L.A. to laughing about how fast lesbians seem to nest (she now personally knows!), Nash-Betts enters our chat with the same mixture of candor, comedy and sincerity that has made her an icon — Out100-certified, even. And as she talks about love, visibility and why she said yes to a show she knew nothing about, the irony of starting this interview in a closet doesn’t go unnoticed: Nash-Betts may be physically in one, but figuratively speaking, she’s never been further from it.

You get some fun lines on this show. Was it easy to say yes to this script?

Well, to be honest with you, I didn't have a script when I said yes. None of us did. I signed on because I love Ryan Murphy, and I trust him. He calls, you say yes, and then you figure out what you said yes to later. Did you feel good about what you said yes to?

Oh yeah.

How did you feel when you learned that your introduction in the very first episode would involve presenting an anal stimulator on a PowerPoint slide?

I wasn't shocked, because it's Ryan. I was like, “Oh, we're doing it.” OK! Here's the thing with Ryan: You don't know what to expect, but you do know to expect the unexpected. You never know how his mind works. You can't figure it out. As soon as you think you got it figured out, he hits you with something that you did not see coming. With a show like this, how do you keep the comedy grounded while staying true to your character?

Well, I feel like everyday life gives you so much comedy, you know what I mean? And I just think that the goal, in most cases, is to not play it for the comedy. That's how you keep the comedy grounded. Queer viewers have so many reasons to tune into this show, and I’m sure the gay men around you tell you that all the time.

I lovingly say about “All's Fair,” it's for the thems, the theys and the gays. And it is for people who grew up on “Dynasty” and “Knots Landing,” and who had to run home because they wanted to find out what happened with Luke and Laura on “General Hospital.” It's like, if you don't know that life, it's not for you. Are you saying that you’re in that club? You grew up on those shows?

Oh yeah! “Dallas,” all of them. All of the nighttime soap operas. But the daytime soap operas, like “The Young and the Restless,” I had been watching that with my grandmother since I was 5. So, if you grew up in that era, then you get this show. There seems to be a consensus on gay social media that this show is made for queer audiences, with many comments suggesting that people who aren’t queer might not fully get it. Are you noticing that queer viewers are responding to the show in ways that other audiences

Am I? I'm a walking hero! I go outside and I'm the mayor of Queerville. I mean, I'm basically the queer of the year when I step out into these L.A. streets. They are on me! [They’re like] “Ah, I gotta tell you,” and I'm like, I know, I know.

Another reason for gay people to love this show: Sarah Paulson. What was it like working with a fellow queer person , and what else did you bond over beyond “Carol”?

[Laughs.] Sarah and I had done the series “Mrs. America.” That was where we first worked together. And we both bond over the love of my spouse. We both love my spouse a lot. Yeah, she's obsessed with my spouse. [Laughs.] And it's so funny because her partner, Holland [Taylor], is obsessed with me. So, it's a lot of love that goes around that circle.

Thinking about you and Sarah on this show, and your history of being involved in projects with queer representation, how significant is it now — after coming out in the last few years — for you to pay attention to that when deciding on a role?

You know, I think it's very important. And let me just clear something up, for me, because language is important. I don't feel like, for me, I had anywhere to come out of, because I wasn't living a sexually repressed life. I wasn't hiding a life or keeping my life from the public. The minute that I fell in love with JB, I was like, let's sing it from the hiiiills! Because it was just another iteration of love. So, as soon as I could make it public, I did. I didn't right at the beginning, because I didn't know if it was gonna work. So, if it didn't work, what was the point? But I found out what I did not know: that lesbian’s nest very quickly. I didn't know that. And the next thing I know, I turned around three times and was married, and I said, “Oh shit, I guess we better tell the folks we married!” So, I definitely am a person who just, no matter where I am in life, I live it out loud. When it showed up for me, I didn't see it coming, but I welcomed it with open arms, among other things.

And I love showing up in places, on set specifically, because the community needs to see itself — on the TV, big screen, small screen, here, there and everywhere. That's one. But there's also the other layer where you get to lean in and play characters that are in the community, which is also delicious. You know, which was what I was able to do on “The Rookie: Feds.” I was an equal opportunity lover on that show and was able to have my spouse as my first lover that was introduced on that show. Now, with regards to “All's Fair,” Emerald had a tough go of it the first season. So, as she's looking for love, I

don't know where she's gonna land. But [in the second season] I wouldn't be mad if she took a walk on all sides of the thing! How much of a say do you have in her sexuality as that character develops?

All of the ladies are executive producers on the show. So, that gives you a voice, and Ryan is a wonderful collaborative partner. And so, we're gonna chit and chat and see what his thoughts are about Emerald for Season 2 and see what we're thinking is gonna happen for her. But, you know, I definitely want her to move beyond sex toys in the drawer.

Congratulations on being named an Out100 Icon of the Year in 2025. You’ve been such an important figure for representation in our community, and you’ve spoken about how publicly loving Jessica and living authentically matters not just to you, but to the many people who see you both together. With your visibility continuing to grow, especially among queer youth of color, what kind of impact do you hope to have?

Thank you. Oh, my goodness, you know, that's a very good question, because in terms of celebrity, and people that you could look to, they don't see a lot of Black on Black love. So, I'm very, very grateful to stand in those stilettos. And with my hersband, what you see is what you get. And it's not a fake life for social media or anything. And it's so funny because a lot of my glam [team] have said that people they know will say, “What are they like when you go over there? Are they like the way they seem on Instagram?” To which my glam always says, “Oh my god, they're sickening. She can't even be in there getting her makeup done without JB coming in there being like, Y'all alright?’ And Niecy'll be like, ‘You didn't kiss me yet!’” And so, I'm just happy that young, queer, Black people can see that you define how you want your relationship to be, and what you want it to look like, and that you can still go out in the world, and be successful, chart your own path and create the life that you want.

representative figure in the community?

No pressure at all. It just means keep living and loving, because that's all I'm doing. And I'm unapologetic about it. I had tears in my eyes when I couldn't go to accept my award because I ended up booking a job that crossed over into the night of the show, but that was one of the greatest things that I've ever received. And I'm so grateful to be seen in that way. It’s delicious because it's a part of my life that I never saw coming. It's one thing to be an ally, and it's a totally different thing to be a card-carrying member.

Since you’ve been both, can you talk about that shift from ally to member?

Well, I've always been an ally. I've always had many friends in the community who I advocated for and helped raise money for different organizations and projects. But when you stand in it, it's a little bit different, because the stories that you hear, the pain that people show up with, those experiences… they give them to you in a different way when you’re “one of us.” It's different, you know? [Laughs.] But I love that for me.

I bet there were people who were wanting to claim you long before you knew that you were part of this community.

Let me tell you something, I had no idea. But I got so many DMs where people were

saying, “I didn't know I had a chance!”

Simmer down! [Laughs.]

Because you were with Jessica when you got those DMs, right?

Right, it was too late! They were like, I didn't know I had a chance, and I'm like, well, I still don't know that you would have had a chance. Because, for me, I lovingly call myself “Jess-sexual,” because that's the only woman that does it for me.

Regarding this project you mentioned — I’m curious if it might be a film, especially since 2026 seems like the year you’re set to make a big splash as a film star, because that’s what you want.

Because that's what I want, baby! But no, it's not a film, but it is something I'm so excited about. And in February, you'll know about it.

But I am very much in the trenches of scripts, trying to figure out what the next thing is I'm going to do and how to fit it into my schedule. And also, maybe taking a twirl in the podcast world.

Lastly, how has your relationship with Jessica shaped your activism and the way you show up publicly?

Well, you know, love makes you courageous. It makes you bold, and you definitely don't want anyone you love or have romantic love for to experience anything on your watch that's unfair, that's unkind, that's hurtful, that's mean. So, when things are happening, she can definitely take care of herself. She's very much like, I got this, I've been doing this a long time. I'm like, OK, well, I just got here, and I'm letting you know. So, I just think that love is such a powerful force in so many mediums that it changes you, it grows you, it's the thing that will stretch you and ultimately make you a better person — if you let it.

TRAIN SMART KEEP THE PAIN FROM STEALING YOUR GAINS

You made it! First month of 2026 and you’re in. You committed to your training this year, whether that means lifting heavy, flowing through yoga, running laps, swimming, dancing, or chasing a ball across a court. The motivation is high, goals are clear, the vision is strong and the playlists are fire. And then… boom! That little ache shows up.

Let’s make one thing clear: pain is not a badge of honor; consistency is. If you want to train all year long and keep that Hotbody energy strong, the goal is to move smart, not reckless. Here’s how to keep pain from getting in the way of your gains.

Jumping straight into a workout without warming up is like revving a cold engine—something’s gonna protest.

1. Warm Up Like It Matters, Because It Does!

Jumping straight into a workout without warming up is like revving a cold engine. A proper warm up increases circulation, lubricates your joints, and prepares your muscles for the work ahead.

Five to ten minutes of intentional

movement is enough. Think about mobility, light cardio, and dynamic stretches that mimic the workout you are about to do. Your body performs better when it is awake and ready for action.

2. Leave the Ego at the Door

Chasing heavier weights, faster times, or harder drills before your body is ready is a recipe for setbacks. Progress should feel challenging but controlled.

Good form builds strength that lasts. Bad form builds future pain. If you have to sacrifice technique to complete a rep, it is not a win. Slow progress done well will always beat rushed progress that leads to injury. Remember, if you can’t control the weight, the weight is controlling you.

3. Recovery Is Training Too

Rest days are not a break from your fitness journey. They are part of it. Muscles grow and tissues repair during recovery, not during the workout itself.

Stretching, yoga, walking, swimming, foam rolling, massage, and even quality sleep all support recovery. When you allow

Leo Harley

your body to recharge, you show up stronger, more mobile, and more energized for your next session.

4. Pain Is a Messenger, Listen to It!

Muscle soreness after a workout is normal, especially when trying something new. Sharp pain, joint pain, or discomfort that lingers or worsens is your body asking you to pay attention.

Ignoring pain does not make it disappear. It makes it louder. Training through pain often turns small issues into long layoffs. Respect the signals and adjust when needed.

5. Variety Keeps You Moving Longer

Doing the same movements day after day puts repeated stress on the same muscles and joints. This is how overuse injuries happen.

Mixing strength training with mobility work, cardio with resistance, and high intensity sessions with low impact days keeps your body balanced. Variety also keeps training fun and mentally refreshing, which helps you stay committed long term.

6. Fuel, Hydrate, Repeat

Your workouts are only as good as the fuel behind them. Hydration, protein, carbohydrates, and essential minerals all play a role in recovery and performance.

If you feel constantly tired, tight, or run down, it may not be your training. It may be under fueling. Eating enough and drinking enough water allows your body to repair itself and stay resilient.

7. Consistency Beats Intensity

You do not need to destroy your body in one workout to make progress. You need to show up regularly. Sustainable training builds momentum. Extreme training builds burnout.

Think long term. The goal is to train in a way that allows you to move week after week, month after month, all year long.

8. Wear the Right Gear for the Job

What you wear matters more than you think. The wrong shoes or unsupportive

clothing can throw off your alignment and add unnecessary stress to your joints.

Running shoes are not lifting shoes. Old worn out sneakers are not neutral. Shoes should match your activity and provide proper support, grip, and cushioning. Comfortable breathable clothing that allows full range of motion also helps you move better and avoid restrictions that lead to strain.

9. Do Not Skip Mobility and Flexibility Work

Strength without mobility can create stiffness and imbalances. Flexible muscles and healthy joints move more efficiently and are less prone to injury.

Mobility work does not have to be long or complicated. A few minutes before or after training can improve posture, movement quality, and overall comfort in your body. This is especially important as training volume increases.

10. Get Help When You Need It

There is no prize for doing everything alone. Coaches, trainers, physical therapists, massage therapists, and movement specialists exist for a reason.

A fresh set of eyes can correct form issues you may not notice and help you move more efficiently. Investing in guidance early can save you from injuries later.

One Final Rep

The hottest bodies aren’t built by grinding through pain, they’re built by people who respect their bodies enough to care for them.

This year is not about punishing your body for progress. It is about taking ownership of your training and protecting your body, so nothing slows your momentum. Every rep has intention. Every recovery day has purpose. Respect the machine you live in and treat it like it is built for longevity. Make 2026 the year you stay strong, pain free, and consistent all the way through.

Even more ‘Heated Rivalry’ as Season 2 announced

If the year rolled to a close and you’d not yet heard of author Rachel Reid’s “Game Changers” series of novels, you have now with the surprise streaming hit of the year, HBO’s “Heated Rivalry.” The six-episode series followed the growing romance between two young, closeted professional hockey rookies, shining Canadian star Shane (Hudson Williams) and Russian bad boy Ilya (Connor Storrie). Created by “Letterkenny” alum Jacob Tierney, it’s all the queer internet can talk

about lately. Even the NHL (the show depicts a fictional version with a different name) is supporting it for bringing in new fans to the sport. The announcement of Season 2, then, comes as no surprise, much to the delight of everyone but the usual bigots. It seems nearly certain that breakout heartthrobs Williams and Storrie will return, along with new casting for new storylines. But you’ll have a bit of a wait: Tierney writes all of it and doesn’t like to rush. A perfect time to catch up on the wild comedy of the hockey-adjacent “Letterkenny” and the hockey-specific “Shoresy.”

Hayley Kiyoko hopes you like more ‘Girls Like Girls’ in 2026

Admire the tenacious drive of lesbian multi-hyphenate artist Hayley Kiyoko, who has built an ever-growing career in queer pop music without depending on singles charts, has acted since her teen years (“The Fosters,” “Wizards of Waverly Place”), directed her own music videos, written the popular novel “Girls Like Girls” based on her 2015 song of the same name, and has now directed her first feature film, also titled “Girls Like Girls.” About — what else — young girls in love, the film stars Canadian actress Maya Da Costa (Hulu’s “Under the Bridge”) and Thai actress Myra Molloy (Broadway’s “Hadestown,” “Miss Saigon”) and will be released by Focus Features in June of 2026 for a cheeky Pride Month bit of counter-programming opposite “Toy Story 5.” If you hadn’t noticed her before, 2026 looks to change that.

dramatic ‘In the Blink of an Eye’

Comedy star Kate McKinnon has spent the majority of her career making people laugh, the sole exceptions being her roles in the 2019 Fox News scandal-themed “Bombshell” and 2022’s “Joe vs Carole.” But in 2026, she’ll be one of the leads in director Andrew Stanton’s (“Finding Nemo,” “WALL-E”) science-fiction drama, “In the Blink of an Eye.”

Co-starring alongside Rashida Jones and “Hamilton” star Daveed Diggs, we understand it to involve three intersecting storylines taking place in three different time periods: 45,000 years in the past, the present, and 200 years into the future. Intriguing — will Kate M play a prehistoric cave lesbian? — and the big test will be its reception at the Sundance Film Festival in January. After that, it drops on Hulu at the end of February.

Barbara Hammer documentary goes to Sundance

Queer cinephiles rejoice, here comes “Barbara Forever,” a documentary about the life and artistic output of groundbreaking lesbian director Barbara Hammer. Directed by Brydie O’ Connor, “Barbara Forever” explores the archive and legacy of the experimental filmmaker, whose film “Nitrate Kisses” was an integral part of early ’90s New Queer Cinema. She was part of the feminist and LGBT movement in 1970s

San Francisco and the art world of 1980s New York City, and with every step of her life and career she investigated what it meant to be queer until her death in 2019. She put lesbians on screen at every stage of her life and queer

filmmaking owes a debt to her, so this documentary will be required viewing for any student of film history. It has its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Be on the lookout for it to hit arthouses later in 2026.
