Don’t trash your Halloween costume just yet. Did you know that 35 million Halloween costumes are thrown away in the U.S each year? That's a lot of textile waste and plastic from synthetic fabrics that can't be broken down, contributing to our ongoing climate crisis. Goodwill South Florida is offering a solution: a “Costume Comeback” of sorts. Throughout the month of November, customers can donate their gently used Halloween costumes to Goodwill South Florida stores instead of discarding them. In return, donors receive a coupon for their next Goodwill purchase. Not only does this initiative keep costumes out of landfills (and the back of their closet), but it also ensures that Goodwill has plenty of merchandise to offer next year. I sat down with the beautiful Miss Florida F.I. Gadfrie Arbulu, to ask her a few questions:
For those who don't know you, tell us a little about yourself?
Gadfrie Arbulu is a dedicated performer with over 25 years in the entertainment industry and the world of beauty pageants. Born in Peru in 1982, she immigrated to the United States in 2013 to continue pursuing her dreams. Since then, life hasn’t always been easy — I’ve faced many challenges along the way — but I never allowed them to break me. Every obstacle became a lesson, every setback a chance to grow stronger. I’ve always believed that with passion, discipline, and faith, dreams can come true. Today, I continue to represent my community with pride, carrying the values of perseverance, grace, and gratitude that have guided me since the beginning. For those who don't know you, tell us a little about yourself?

I’ve always believed that with passion, discipline, and faith, dreams can come true. Today, I continue to represent my community with pride, carrying the values of perseverance, grace, and gratitude that have guided me since the beginning. Why did you want to win Miss Florida, and why is Miss Florida so important?
something truly changed in my life. People started to see me in a different light — with more respect, more love — and that means so much to me. This title gave me the opportunity to bring more visibility to my community, not just nationally but internationally as well, and that’s what I really love. It’s not just about the crown; it’s about using it to inspire, to open doors, and to remind others that dreams do come true when you lead with passion and heart. What is the best thing that has happened to you in your career?
When I first arrived in the United States, I immediately felt a deep connection with Florida. There’s something so special about its strong Latin culture — it reminds me of my own roots and makes me feel at home. Over the years, I’ve often traveled to Florida for work, and every time I go, I feel embraced by its people, its energy, and its diversity. That’s why carrying the crown of Miss Florida means so much to me. It’s not just a title — it’s a symbol of everything I love about this community. For me, it’s a true honor to represent Florida, to bring visibility not only to this beautiful crown but also to the amazing people who make this state shine. How has your life changed since you won the title of Miss Florida?
I had already won another national title, USQ, which was a beautiful experience for me. But after winning Miss Florida,
What I can truly say has been one of the best moments of my career is feeling the love, respect, and appreciation — not only from the LGBTQ+ community, but also from the straight community. It has opened a beautiful window for me, giving me the chance to grow, to believe in myself again, and to keep moving forward toward my dreams. I feel incredibly grateful and blessed for every opportunity, and I carry it all with humility, love, and the responsibility to keep inspiring others to believe in themselves too.

The actor on ‘Plainclothes’ as a political wake-up call and the urgent need for queer visibility today
By Chris Azzopardi
Russell Tovey has always possessed a low-key magnetism in his work — one that goes beyond his appearance — whether starring in the queer HBO series “Looking” or the dystopian drama “Years and Years.”
But in “Plainclothes,” his performance as Andrew, an out gay man navigating the dangerous terrain of cruising culture in the late ’90s, feels especially lived-in. The film, which premiered at Sundance early this year, is set in 1997 and draws on real accounts of police stings targeting queer men in public spaces. In one such location, a shopping mall bathroom, Andrew locks eyes with Lucas (Tom Blyth), and what begins as a tense, flirtatious encounter spirals into something far riskier — and far more intimate — than either expects.
Andrew is spared. Lucas is a cop, but he’s gay too. And in a moment of unexpected solidarity, he lets Andrew go. From there,
the two circle each other in a slow-burning, erotically charged connection that walks the line between desire and danger. What unfolds is more than a romance — it’s a reckoning.
I caught up with Tovey recently, just as “Plainclothes” prepared for its wider release. We spoke about the emotional weight of the film, the power of discomfort in storytelling and what it means to tell queer stories in an era where queer lives are increasingly under threat.
I had the privilege of seeing “Plainclothes” during Sundance. What was it like to experience the film with a festival audience for the first time?
Well, you used the word privilege, and it was a total privilege to take on this role, to be part of this production, to work with [writer-director] Carmen Emmi on his first feature.
I think he's a genius to go to Sundance. The big thing I learned from Sundance is that everybody knew everything that everybody was doing; there's a real film community full of storytellers, and everybody is kind and open and you realize it's because there's no money. It's actually because people are there wanting to tell stories and they want to get it out there as much as possible.
So, the atmosphere was electric. And to do something like this, which is very experimental as a filmmaker, just by the lenses he was using, just by the texture of what you're looking at, it was so exciting. And to tell a queer story like this in any climate, but in today's climate especially, feels fundamental. So, I feel really privileged to be part of this adventure.
I was really drawn to the overall nostalgic aesthetic of the film. That’s not something that, as an actor, you can truly experience until you've seen the film.
When we were filming it, when [Emmi] whipped out the camcorder and started doing close-up lens shots and making you walk through the forest and he was following your feet, I was like, I don’t know what this guy's doing. And I said, “Is this behind the scenes? What is this?” And he's going, “No, no; it’s going to get in there somewhere, just stick with me.” And then you watch it and you're like, “Wow.”
The vision and the way he works is something that I've taken from filming on “Plainclothes,” which I never did before, and it seems so simple and obvious: He plays music into every scene. So, when we are rehearsing, we have the music in there, and we all know that feeling when you hear soundtrack music — it’s a fast hack to emotion. And
he was doing that. And now every job I do, I'm always like, “Can we have speakers and play music so that we can all collectively be on the same energy level?” On the next job I did, I did it. And I thought the crew was going to be like, “Oh, please, can you tell Russell not to play music?” But then you see the focus with the music, and it's just so exciting and intoxicating. And Carmen introduced me to that, and that's changed everything.
Given how America has become a more hostile place for LGBTQ+ people since the film premiered at Sundance in January — we’re experiencing the actual policing of queer voices — how has this reality changed the way you see this film?
I think proving the existence of queer people is incredibly important and making movies that can universally help people see similarities and not differences. Even though these characters are gay men, I hope that people can see feelings that they've experienced in their lives or are going through — of policing your own emotions, of unrequited love, of the forbidden fruit, of having an affair, of secrets and lies. And it's universal, and this is told through the lens of two gay men struggling at a time when safe spaces are non-existent.
As queer people we're pushed into the margins into dangerous situations because society has not created safety for our existence. This film is set in 1997, and you feel like it should be a historical piece. And then you just look at the world now and you think if you wait long enough, it moves in circles, and here we are, and this film suddenly feels contemporary. And it's a real message; these characters are real people, they exist. And I hope that people can see the universality in their struggles within themselves, whatever their desires are.
What kind of research went into understanding the history of police entrapping gay men?
I remember George Michael, that was the ultimate entrapment, and that was an inspiration for this film. Carmen's brother is a police officer, and he discovered this story about this bathroom that was being targeted and these men were being filmed and then they were having their lives destroyed or threatened. So, it's based on a real experience.
I was born in ’81. I was sort of coming of age at the time of AIDS and conversations around the legalities of what it is and age of consent. And you feel like now all the work's been done, but all the work has just been undone. It's been reversed and it's at risk. And as a community, we're under threat and there are people within the community that are the most marginalized people on the planet, and we have responsibilities as a community. And because of inherited trauma and the work that people have done to allow us to be who we are today, to be a beacon of hope and support our community members and tell these stories and prove our existence and not go quiet and not disappear, which is what people want. And
that's not going to happen.
In “Plainclothes,” Andrew initially comes across as a confident, more dominant figure — he has this cruising persona that feels very controlled and perfected. But as the story unfolds, especially with the reveal that Lucas is a cop, there’s a clear and sudden power shift. How did you approach playing those shifts in power and vulnerability within Andrew?
I talked about this earlier with Tom — that there is a power dynamic. Andrew's an older man; he's more experienced. It’s Lucas’ first time. Then, as soon as Lucas reveals he's a cop, the power shift has gone completely upside down. That changes everything. But prior to that moment, my character had no idea what he does, that he's a cop. And I love the fact that as characters, the dance shifts and we're into different choreography at that point. And that's wonderful. I feel like Andrew has his cruising persona. It's safety. He's perfected it. This is something that he does. But Lucas connects with him on a level which he hasn't connected with for many, many years, and it's terrifying for him and intoxicating, and that's so wonderful to play.
I’d like to shift to “Years and Years,” since we are, in many ways, living that show in the U.S. It's very eerily prescient. But thinking about it alongside “Plainclothes,” I was struck by how both might leave viewers feeling unsettled in a way that challenges their politics. What do you think of discomfort as a storytelling tool?
Life is uncomfortable right now. We are all paralyzed and fatigued and scared and traumatized, and at a loss for words. Art is the voice, the catalyst, the conduit to discovery, to understanding, to connectivity. That's what art does. And I feel like we need it more than ever. Being uncomfortable pushes you to activate and make change. And having the opportunity to understand
how you can be better or help or amplify or encourage is so important because of so many topics. But the community needs amplification and needs allies so much more than ever. So being uncomfortable is a positive thing if you make the decision to help.

November 11–16
By: Scott Holland
The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts presents the Broadway touring company of Kimberly Akimbo from Tuesday November 11 through Sunday, November 16. This is a new musical about growing up and growing old (in no particular order), Kimberly Akimbo is the winner of 5 Tony Awards including Best Musical. It features Tony Award-winning book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire (Shrek), a Tony Award-winning score by Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home), choreography by Danny Mefford (Dear Evan Hansen) and direction by Tony-nominated director Jessica Stone (Water for Elephants).
Kimberly is about to turn 16 and recently moved with her family to a new town in suburban New Jersey. In this “howlingly funny heartbreaker of a show” (The New Yorker), Kim
is forced to navigate family dysfunction, a rare genetic condition, her first crush…and possible felony charges. Ever the optimist, she is determined to find happiness against all odds and embark on a great adventure.
Named BEST MUSICAL by the Tony Awards, New York Drama Critics Circle, The Drama Desk Awards, The Lucille Lortel Awards and The Outer Critics Circle Awards, Kimberly Akimbo is also the winner of four additional Tony Awards: Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Score (David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori), and Best Book (David Lindsay-Abaire). With her win for Kimberly Akimbo, Jeanine Tesori made history as the first female composer to win two Tony Awards for Best Score.
Were you always a performer even as a child or when did it start?
I always loved theater and performing since I could remember. I started taking classes at 5, worked professionally at 9 and made my Broadway debut at 11. What was your Broadway debut?
It was the Broadway revival of Annie in 2012, and it was an incredible experience as a child.
When did you realize performing would be your career and how did that happen?
I don’t think I ever really considered anything else. It’s all I have ever dona and all I ever wanted to do.
Other than this role, what has been your favorite role?
I did a feature film between Kimberly Akimbo on Broadaway and the tour and it’s
called “Lemonade Blessing.” It’s now showing at festivals and will be out soon. I loved playing the role of Lillith. What is your fantasy role, a role you haven't played, but you would die to play?
I am not even sure it’s written yet as I love originating new work. I do love to be in the room when the role is created…developing it from the ground up.
Describe yourself in three words?
Passionate, goal-oriented and funky. What do you do for fun?
I love watching movies, playing board games, cooking and hanging out with friends. I also love self-care nights. You grew up in South Florida, are you excited to be coming home?
I’m so excited as my parents and my dog still live here and I am excited to share this show that I have been working on for so long with my home town. What should our readers expect from this production of Kimberly Akimbo?
It’s a very special singular show as it is small and intimate and there are not a lot of shows like it. Your readers will have a great time and it’s a beautiful show that hits you in the heart. It’s a great reminder how precious life is and how we need to embrace our individuality!

TAKE YOUR WORKOUT OUTDOORS THIS SEASON FALL INTO FITNESS
The air’s a little cooler, the sun’s a little softer, and those Florida breezes finally make it bearable to sweat outside without melting into a puddle. Fall is here, and it’s the perfect time to ditch the four walls of the gym and let Mother Nature be your new personal trainer.
1. Beach Bootcamp
Forget the treadmill — Florida beaches are the ultimate gym floor. Sprint on the sand for resistance (your calves will sing) or grab a resistance band and do walking lunges along the shoreline. Add in push-ups, burpees, and plank jacks between wave sets, and you’ve got yourself a killer circuit. Plus, a tan that screams ‘I actually go outside’
Pro Tip: Do your sets as the sun rises. It’s cooler, less crowded, and there’s no better
motivation than watching the world light up while you grind.
2. Park Power Circuits
Local parks aren’t just for dog walks and picnics; they’re secret outdoor gyms in disguise. Benches? Perfect for tricep dips or step-ups. Monkey bars? Hello, pull-ups. And that open grass field? It’s HIIT time. Try this 20-minute circuit:
• 30 second sprint
• 10 push-ups
• 20 bodyweight squats
• 10 burpees
Repeat 4–5 times and watch your endorphins spike higher than your heart rate.
Bonus: Bring a friend (or that gym crush you’ve been flirting with) for partner drills … because nothing says ‘bonding’ like synchronized sweat.
Leo Harley
3. Trailblazer Training
Hit those nature trails and turn your hike into a hybrid cardio-and-strength workout. Every 5 minutes, stop and throw in 20 squats or 10 push-ups. Carry a weighted backpack if you’re feeling spicy. It doubles as resistance training and hydration storage.
Why it works: Uneven terrain engages stabilizer muscles you didn’t even know you had. Perfect for sculpting those legs and glutes.
4. Ride the Season
Fall is the perfect time to rediscover the joy of biking outdoors: cooler temps, clearer skies, and that just-right breeze that makes every ride feel like freedom. Hopping on a bike turns your workout into an experience: it’s cardio that doubles as exploration. Each route brings new scenery, new challenges, and that irresistible rush when you pick up speed and feel the world blur around you. Outdoor cycling strengthens your heart, tones your legs, and boosts your mood like nothing else. All while reconnecting you to nature. So, gear up, hit the road, and let every ride remind you that fitness isn’t just about moving, it’s about feeling alive while you do it.
Pro Tip: Swap your usual playlist for the sounds of the ride. The wind in your ears, the hum of the tires, and the rhythm of your breath. It’s a moving meditation that keeps you present, grounded, and in sync with every mile.
5. Sunset Stretch & Flow
After all that intensity, wind down with yoga in the park or by the bay. The fall sky in Florida turns every
evening into a golden-hour dream. So why not stretch, breathe, and soak it in? Bring a mat, some chill tunes, and your favorite post-workout smoothie.
6. Play Hard, Not Just Train Hard
Fall is your cue to take the fun outside, because fitness doesn’t have to live under fluorescent lights. Grab a paddleboard, hit a volleyball court on the sand, or cruise down the beach on rollerblades. Outdoor sports build strength, coordination, and stamina without feeling like “work.” The ocean becomes your cardio zone, the sun your spotlight, and every game a full-body workout in disguise. This season, trade reps for rallies and let play become your new kind of training.
The Power of a Fresh Environment
Changing your workout scenery isn’t just refreshing — it’s transformational. When you move your body in new environments, your brain lights up in new ways too. It breaks you out of routine, challenges different muscles, and reignites motivation that may have gone stale between the squat rack and treadmill. Training outdoors connects you to your surroundings. The sounds, the air, the energy and reminds you why you started: not just to work out, but to feel
So, take that first step out the door, breathe in that crisp Florida air, and let your fitness routine fall into something new. The gym will still be there when it’s 90 degrees again, but for now, Fall is calling.

Beatle can content themselves by watching “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Yellow Submarine” over the next 36 months while you wait to meet The Fab Fifth.
gay manager: James Norton
James Norton is a British actor known for being on TV shows like Masterpiece’s “Grantchester,” and Netflix’s “House of Guinness.” He was also in Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women.” His sex symbol status is solid among fans, but now his biggest profile role to date is set: Brian Epstein. That’s a name you might not know, but he was the manager of the Beatles, he was gay, and he was a driving force behind their
early success, and sometimes referred to as the “Fifth Beatle,” which means his presence across all four upcoming Beatles biopics from “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes will be significant. The four films in question will be referred to, for now, as “The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event” and star Paul Mescal (Paul), Harris Dickinson (John), Barry Keoghan (Ringo), and “Stranger Things” actor Joseph Quinn (George). The four-movie multiplex-busting project is set to arrive in 2028 – these things take time, after all –so newcomers to all things
Queer comic actor John Early has directed his first movie after being everywhere at once on TV and in film, most notably as one of the stars of “Search Party.” His debut feature film is “Maddie’s Secret,” and it won great acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. The plot involves a young woman named Maddie –played by Early – who works as an internet food content creator and who also has a husband and an eating disorder she’s trying to keep secret. Word is that the comedy also works within the retro TV movie social issue genre, which is intriguing – Kristen Wiig and Will Farrell did something similar in 2015’s “A Deadly Adoption” – and the supporting cast, including Vanessa Bayer, Kristen Johnston, and queer comic Kate Berlant makes this one something we’re eager to see. Indie distributor Magnolia Pictures has picked it up for release in 2026, so we’ll be there supporting our local arthouse theater.
November is when most of the Christmas-themed films arrive in theaters and this year the indie comedy “Lost & Found in Cleveland” is ready to make merry. Set over a 24-hour period in the midwestern city during the holidays, as an “Antiques Roadshow”-style TV show comes to town, the film follows a group of people whose lives intersect over the course of that day. And the cast is stacked: queer favorites like “Glee” veteran Dot-Marie Jones, Jeff Hiller (Emmy winner for “Somebody Somewhere”), as well as Dennis Haysbert, Martin Sheen, Loretta Devine, June Squib, Stacy Keach, “Gilmore Girls” alum Liza Weil, and Mark L. Walberg (who appears as the antiques show host named, appropriately enough, “Tom L. Hanks.”) With more and more holiday films relegated to streaming services –everybody wants to compete with Hallmark – it’s good to know there are still movies that aim for a cozy cinema experience. It hits theaters on November 7, so wear a festive sweater.
“Red, White & Royal Blue” invites you to a wedding
Never underestimate audience desire for good-looking rich people falling in love; it’s a tradition as old as movies. And it’s almost certainly one reason for the success of the 2023 Amazon movie “Red, White & Royal Blue.” Based on the novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston, about a gay prince and his handsome non-aristocratic suitor, it became a queer rom-com sensation. And now there’s a sequel in the works, “Red,
White & Royal Wedding.” Amazon MGM has Emmy-nominated director Jamie Babbit (“But I’m a Cheerleader”) is on board, as well as original stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez (and, presumably, the rest of the first film’s cast). Plot details are currently under wraps, but with that title you sort of already know what happens. And no one’s asking you to save the date yet, either. That’s a secret, too.
