The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts presents ue du rq S i o C le y i b l

Making its South Florida debut November 20–30.

‘ Twas the Night Before... is Cirque du Soleil's first holiday show, based on the classic poem “A Visit from Saint Nicolas” by Clement Clarke Moore. Memorable lines from this cherished classic inspired Cirque's story about a jaded young girl who rediscovers the magic of the holidays. A festive flurry of love and cheer created especially for families, 'Twas the Night Before... features thrilling acrobatics, lovable characters and a soundtrack including holiday classics reinvented by Cirque du Soleil. The show was conceived and is directed by Cirque du Soleil Senior Artistic Director James Hadley, a 25-year veteran of circus productions and live theater

It was a pleasure to sit down with Emilia Dawiec, one of the performers, of 'Twas the Night Before... for this exclusive Hotspots interview

Were you always a dancer/performer even as a child or when did it start?

I have always been a theatre kid. Since primary school I have been attending acting courses, vocal classes, and taking

part in school and college plays. My love of dance started after watching the Netflix series “Pose” (I am a whaackee!) and the first time I experienced circus classes was in secondary school and it's really been a part of my life ever since!

When did you realize performing would be your career and how did that happen?

I was confident about being a performer since an early age, it's a part of my nature.

Photo: Errisson Lawr ence

Although, the “official” professional commitment arrived when I decided to study full time dance in Poland and later when I began working towar my second artistic degr from Circus and Performing Arts school in Belgium.

Do you have any mentors or role models in the dancing world and/or the acrobatics world?

I do have wonderful mentors and role models! I have amazing coaches I've been working with thr my circus discipline tr big shout out to R (ÉSAC hoop coach, Marié-Michelle F aerial coach, Montr Masha Terentieva (CdS aerial coach and creator of Cart, Montreal). I am currently in the process of developing my character work, k up to and admir (Italian clown & circus performer), Poulin (friend of mine, amazing comedian and circus artist also!) and many others! I am lucky to have so many talented and bold performers in my surroundings to be inspired by

How did you get hired by Cirque Du Soleil?

Last year I was invited to present my solo number during their in-person audition. For this show particularly I was contacted by a Casting Scout via my social media. Fun fact… Originally, I was proposed to be the character “Spark” in the show and perform the hair suspension number. However, by the end my audition, “Ava” the hotel cart performer was a much better match for me!

How is this show different from other Cirque du Soleil productions?

Well, we have a real Santa with us on the stage! 'Twas the Night Before… is different from other Cirque's shows because it's their first holiday show, created especially for kids and families.

Describe yourself in three words?

I would say bubbly, chaotic, and hardworking! I am like a glittery tornado, haha.

What do you do for fun?

I am such a coffee lover and a bookworm! So, for sure checking out coffee shops, reading books, hitting some hikes, and walking with a little bit of thrifting is my way to spend a day off !

What should our readers expect from Cirque Du Soleil's 'Twas the Night Before…?”

Audiences can expect a festive flurry of love and cheering, including some beautiful blends of re-invented Christmas classics and modern pop culture trends. There's thrilling circus numbers such as hair suspension, daring hoop diving, magical diabolos and outstanding dance choreographies.

3 Ways You Can Help Tackle Hunger and Strengthen Communities This Holiday Season

The holiday season is often a time of joy, connection and celebration. For millions of families across the country, however, it is also a season of uncertainty, wondering how to put food on the table or meet other essential needs. According to the USDA, more than 47.4 million people in the United States experience food insecurity each year

That's why, each holiday season, thousands of Charles Schwab employees get together to fight hunger and strengthen the communities where they live and work Through employee meal-packing events and nonprofit grants, volunteers and partners help families access nutritious meals and vital support during the holidays and beyond

“As we gather with loved ones this season, it's important to remember that not all of our neighbors have that security,” said Kristine Dixon, managing director of Charles Schwab Community Affairs. “By working side-by-side with local hunger relief organizations, we ' re helping ensure more families can share in the joy of a holiday meal and the peace of knowing they are supported.”

As you prepare for the holidays, here are a few ways you can help address hunger relief and support your neighbors

Donate to a Local Food Bank

Food banks and pantries are at the heart of efforts to make nutritious food accessible for all. Inflation and rising costs of living have stretched budgets thin, making it harder for families to afford groceries Nonperishable donations such as canned goods, pasta and rice are always in high demand. Monetary donations often go even further, giving food banks the ability to purchase exactly what is needed most

Volunteer Your Time

The gift of time is just as valuable as food donations Food banks and hunger relief nonprofits rely on volunteers to sort, pack and distribute meals. Even a few hours can make a meaningful difference, adding up to thousands of volunteer hours to help nonprofits meet urgent needs during the holiday season and year-round.

Support Community Partnerships

No single organization can solve hunger alone. Collective action from neighbors, companies, nonprofits and others is what creates lasting impact This year, Schwab employees will join forces with partners like Harvest Pack to pack more than 1 million nutritious meals for families across the country Supporting these types of efforts, whether through donations, volunteering or spreading awareness, can expand the impact

Hunger is about mo re than food; it's about stability and opportunity. By giving, volunteering and partnering with organizations that serve families in need, you can make the holiday season brighter for millions of Americans.

William "Bill" Spinosa,

Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida Founder, Dies at 67

Bill Spinosa, a pioneering LGBTQ+ community leader and founding president of the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF), passed away suddenly on November 1, 2025, at the age of 67. Bill helped launch GMCSF in 2010 and dedicated over 15 years to nurturing its mission to inspire audiences, open minds, and change hearts through music. His unwavering passion and leadership made him a beloved pillar of South Florida's LGBTQ+ arts community and cemented a legacy of activism and song.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Bill built a dynamic early career in retail and personal development, rising quickly through Bloomingdale's and later serving as a seminar leader with Landmark Worldwide. He went on to launch a successful consulting firm in South Florida, guiding medical and dental professionals in leadership and efficiency. His talent for coaching and connecting with people laid the groundwork for his later success in building community through music and service.

After moving to Fort Lauderdale, Bill channeled his passion for music and equality into what became the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida. In 2009, when a

group of singers sought to form a new chorus, Bill was among the visionaries who met to chart a path forward. By September 2010, the GMCSF was incorporated, and Bill stepped up as the fledgling chorus's first Chorus President. From day one, he and the original officers rolled up their sleeves –dividing day-to-day responsibilities, recruiting volunteers, and managing operations – to get the organization off the ground. Bill was part of the original group that helped the chorus navigate its earliest rehearsals, secured nonprofit status, and put on its debut concert in December that year, marking "the beginning of a new chapter in LGBTQ+ arts in South Florida".

As founding president from 2010 through 2014, Bill helped GMCSF establish its mission and a strong foundation of governance and community engagement. "He helped lead the formation of GMCSF, guiding the organization from its earliest rehearsals through incorporation and rapid growth," said Kerry Waldee, Board Chair. "Under his leadership, the chorus…grew into a visible and respected cultural voice in South Florida's LGBTQ+ arts landscape." Bill was instrumental in instilling the values that still define the chorus. He emphasized transparency, integrity, and inclusivity,

fostering a sense of "chosen family" among members. "Bill led by example and instilled values that became part of our culture…he wanted us to be a family—connected, supportive, and proud of what we created together," recalls Tony Corrente, a longtime chorus member and past president.

"Bill loved this Chorus. He was its champion and an advocate for creating a space filled with kindness, nurturing, and love," wrote Jonathan Sanz, GMCSF's current president, in a message to members announcing the loss. "He dedicated every single day to the Chorus… The Chorus meant everything to Bill." Under his vigilant care, GMCSF not only survived challenges but continued to expand its artistic reach and community impact. "GMCSF is Bill's legacy to the world," Jonathan affirmed gratefully In chorus rehearsals and performances, an empty white stool is placed on stage to honor members who have passed – a tradition of remembrance that Bill himself upheld for others, and that now poignantly honors him.

His legacy lives on through the Bill Spinosa Distinguished Service Award, which bears his name and honors chorus members whose service echoes his profound commitment and vision. Known for his selfless leadership and passion for uplifting others, Bill was a force for change both within the chorus and across

the LGBTQ+ community Whether on stage, in church, or among friends, he brought people together with heart and harmony, leaving a lasting imprint on South Florida's cultural and spiritual life. Bill is survived by his beloved husband, Frank Molano, with whom he shared over 25 years of love, music, and partnership. He leaves behind cherished family in New York and Florida, and a chosen family of friends, chorus members, and mentees whose lives he deeply touched. A elebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 20, at the United Church of Christ in Fort Lauderdale. In lieu flowers, donations may be made to the GMCSF or UCC Fort Lauderdale, honoring the legacy of a man whose life resonated with harmony, leadership, and love.

The 31st annual Hurricane Showdown begins Friday, Nov. 28, and concludes Sunday, Nov. 30.

Close to 60 teams from around the nation are scheduled to compete for championships in three divisions. In addition to our local South Florida Amateur Athletic Association teams, cities and associations being represented include Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Mid-Atlantic, Milwaukee, New York, Orlando, Southern New England, Tampa, Twin Cities, and Washington, D.C.

“I look forward to hosting all the teams from across the country," Showdown Tournament Director Josh Yeager said. "It is truly special seeing all the players and fans come spend the holiday weekend here playing a game

Games will be played at Mills Pond Park and Tradewinds Park all weekend with some games being featured at Brian Piccolo Park on Saturday. All three championship games will be held at Mills Pond Park on Sunday afternoon. Games are free to watch, but Tradewinds and Piccolo parks charge a vehicle fee to enter. You can follow all the action by downloading Tourney Machine on

The parties get started early with the local/early bird registration at Georgie’s Alibi Monkey Bar on Wednesday, Nov. 28. There will also be registration at LIT Bar on Thanksgiving night. Games will be played on Friday at Mills Pond Park from 5pm -10pm, with the afterparty at LIT Bar. LIT Bar will also close its parking lot and host the Glo Party and feature "Wicked" on the outdoor large screen on Saturday night after games have concluded. The Alibi will host the Closing Ceremony on Sunday night starting at 5pm.

“I love finishing our year off with Hurricane Showdown including Friday night's Under The Lights, my favorite night of the year!” SFAAA Commissioner Rocky Bowell said. “No other league tournament does it. There is no other feeling like it!”

The Hurricane Showdown caps a remarkable 2025 for SFAAA, which saw the league petition and land a historical marker at the site of the first game in Oakland Park, hold an exhibit at the local Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library featuring the 30-year history of the league, and captured one championship and two runners-up trophies among

five medaling teams at the Gay Softball World Series in Houston. SFAAA was also named Association of the Year by the national body International Pride Softball while the Hurricane Showdown was a finalist for Tournament of the Year. "This year has been like no other year,”

The SFAAA will take December off before resuming play in January with its Thursday Night Lights league followed by the start of its 32nd year with spring season in February.

Tim Martin is a retired sportswriter. He has served as SFAAA Chairman and is currently the SFAAA Hall of Fame Chair and Hurricane Showdown Social Committee Chair.

ABS & CALVES

& CALVES

Some muscles play hard to get, and then there are the ones that love attention. Meet your abs and calves: the two body parts you can train every day without burning out. They're the overachievers of the muscle world: hardworking, quick to recover, and always down for another round. If you're chasing that six-pack or sculpted lower legs, you don't to wait 48 hours between sessions. You can show them love daily (as long as you train smart).

Why Abs & Calves Can Handle Daily Work

Why Abs & Calves Can Handle Daily Work

Your abs stabilize you with every move you make, while your calves carry you through

every step, jump, and sprint. Because they're constantly in action, these muscles are built for endurance. Their higher percentage of slow-twitch fibers means they recover faster than most, making them perfect candidates for frequent training.

That said, the key isn't crushing them with marathon workouts, it's sprinkling focused sessions into your routine. A smart way to do it? Save 10–15 minutes after your main workout to hit abs and calves. That way, you keep your main lifts strong and still give these show-off muscles their daily dose of love.

Finally, ‘Scream 7’ is ready to slash again

It ’s been a long time coming, but “Scream 7” is due to take its murder-bows after the holidays. Kevin Williamson, gay creator of this legendary horror franchise — one that has inspired fans to interpret characters and narrative elements through a queer lens — is back, both in the director ’s chair and as screenwriter, having cowritten it with Guy Busick (2022’s “Scream” and “Scream VI”). Returning

for their third chapter is queer “ Yellowjackets” star Jasmin Savoy Brown, alongside fellow returning castmates Mason Gooding, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley. What ’s it about? Well, there’s this Ghostface, see, and people get stabbed. Forever-target Sidney Prescott (Campbell) has to take matters into her own hands, and… look, you know what ’s coming, and you love it, so grab your people and hit the theater in the new year, February 27.

Bisexual murder myster y ‘Anything That Moves ’ goes retro

When a serial killer ’s trail of corpses points to an innocent bisexual sex worker (Hal Baum), how does he solve the mystery? You’ll find out in the ’70sthrowback indie film “Anything That Moves” from filmmaker Alex Phillips, young-and-going-for-it creator of wild movies like “All Jacked Up and Full of Worms” (which is exactly what it sounds like). The Chicago-based, gialloinspired thriller has already wowed audiences at New/Next Film Fest and its credentials are pretty solid: produced in cooperation with the very cool people at Vinegar Syndrome, the cast is up-and-comers with a few ringers thrown in: legendary adult film stars Ginger Lynn (“ The Devil’s Rejects”) and Nina Hartley (“Boogie Nights”). This one doesn’t skimp on the down-and-dirty atmosphere of ’70s filmmakers Larry Cohen and Paul Morrissey, with all the sleaze, gore and weird comedy names like that bring to mind. It ’s still making its way through the film festival world, but keep this one in mind until it finds a theatrical or streaming home.

not ready

When the character of “Randi” arrived on the fourth season of the HBO comedy “Hacks,” she may as well have been an electrical jolt. Blunt and strange, she’s the definition of oddball recurring character, and as played directly and forcefully by stand-up comic Robby Hoffman — a lesbian who makes her general annoyance with sexual orientations into comedy — she stole every scene she was in. For that work, Hoffman was Emmy nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress, then caught the attention of stand-up king John Mulaney, and now they’re working together. He’s directing Hoffman’s first special for Netflix, which will take place at the Masonic Lodge on the site of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (yes, only in Los Angeles is there a cemetery where comics, musicians and speakers like John Waters perform) and will make your Netflix “recommended for you” algorithm decidedly nervier after you watch it. Stay tuned for a drop date.

“The Baby-Sitters Club” invites you to sing along

Attention ’80s and ’90s kids who were obsessed with the Scholastic Book Fair. Your favorite series of novels, “The Babysitters Club,” is headed to the musical stage. The series from lesbian author Ann M. Martin (you knew a 100-plus book series of wholesome stories about loyalty and friendship among young girls had to come from our team) was turned into a sweet, charming ’90s film, and is now in development as a stage musical with writer Kate Wetherhead (“The Devil Wears Prada”),

director Annie Tippe (“Octet”) and with music from Mark Sonnenblick (“KPop Demon Hunters”). Current information is that the story involves the former teens reuniting as adults in the fictional town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut, navigating adult challenges to happiness, and that the show is expected some time in 2027. No casting news yet, so it’s still early. Of course, even if it takes until 2028 you’ll never re-read all those books by then.

Romeo San Vicente wants all intellectual properties turned into stage musicals.
