Attackers use various methods to gain access to personal and sensitive information by compromising accounts and profiles

These methods may include social engineering, where an individual is manipulated into taking certain actions, or the exploitation of data obtained from data breaches This shows how much malicious actors value our accounts because they can use it for a number of things like stealing your money or identity

These are typical indicators that your account has been compromised:

- You can no longer access your files, and you have received a ransom note to pay, it is highly likely that you have been hit with a ransomware

- You are unable to login into your accounts

- Changes to your security settings

- Unauthorized money transfers from your banking accounts

St eps t o t ake if your account has been hacked:

1 Report any suspicious activity on your account to your account provider, for EPTC accounts you report them to the IT Support team or IT Help Desk For personal accounts like bank accounts, report it immediately with your bank

2 Check your email account, malicious actors use a common tactic by setting up a forwarding rule, which enables them to automatically receive a copy of all emails sent to your account Check if there are any forwarding rules that you do not know that have been set on your account and remove them

3 Change passwords if you have been using the same password across your accounts You need to change passwords to those accounts and for all accounts that have been hacked

4 Log all devices and applications out of your account once you have changed your passwords This will prompt anyone who is trying to use your account to supply a new password

5 Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA), which is an additional layer of authentication It works by sending a code or PIN through SMS or email that you need to enter to prove that it is really you

6 Update all your devices, make sure that your devices are running an updated version of the software and apps Updates come with protection from viruses and security improvements

7 Notify your account contacts and let them know that you have been hacked and to treat any message from your account with suspicion

It is NOT alw ays possible t o recover a com prom ised account Therefore, you are ALWAYS encouraged t o exercise caut ion w hen using IT resources like em ails and t he int ernet
