CEWD Student Spotlight Fall 2026
Alicia James
In Spring 2024, Alicia James enrolled in the Community Health Worker (CHW) Certificate Program in the Division for Continuing Education & Work Development (CEWD) at Hostos. She was surprised to learn that the CHW program was fully funded and would translate to nine college credits upon completion if she enrolled at Hostos College. The years Alicia spent caring for her father gave her valuable experience that helped her excel in the program. Upon completing the certificate in May 2024, the College Transition team at CEWD encouraged Alicia to continue with her education. The team helped her apply and matriculate in the Hostos Associate Degree program in Liberal Arts with a focus in Community Health in Fall 2024. Additionally, they facilitated her application to the Hostos MacKenzie Scott Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) Scholarship, which helped jumpstart her education with a $1,000 scholarship. By May 2026, Alicia obtained her associate’s degree and transitioned to Columbia University's School of General Studies as a NextGen Public Health Scholar. She will then continue to Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health to earn a Master of Public Health. Scholars in this
unique 2+2+2 educational pathway earn an associate degree at Hostos, complete a bachelor’s, and then a master’s degree at Columbia University. For Alicia, this marks the beginning of her journey in healthcare. Inspired by her life experiences and the coursework at Hostos, she is committed to becoming an innovator in community health, advocating for care and access for older adults, and creating systems of support for caregivers. “ The level of professionalism, encouragement, and genuine care is top tier in an environment where students like me feel supported, motivated, and empowered to grow—it's a safe space (home). The encouragement of Dr. Samuel Byrd, Jaunia Clarke and Juan Vazquez gave me a sense of belonging I needed. As an older adult student, sometimes returning to college we question ourselves, but those thoughts were always dismissed when I shared them with your team. 'Alicia, you got this!” —Alicia James

a Tribute to Joe Conzo, Sr. 1935- 2026
Joe Conzo Sr. A one-of-a-kind historian that wore many hats throughout his career
A Tireless Advocate for the Appreciation of Tito Puente and the Preservation of Culture Joe Conzo, Sr. was the producer of many recordings by iconic Latin artists. He worked with the prestigious label Sony Music, for musicians of great stature, like Celia Cruz, Ray Barreto, Eddie Palmieri, and La India. Joe had an unparalleled collection of live Latin music recordings that would surprise and delight even the most knowledgeable person in the music industry. Joe shared his collection and knowledge of Latin music through his lectures about the global impact of Latin music and Latin jazz at places such as Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian, Stony Brook, Yale, The New School, and our beloved Hostos under the Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development (CEWD), graciously supported by Bob Sancho at BronxCare.
Tito Rodriguez, and of course Tito Puente. They brought people together from across the country. Participants tuned in from Costa Rica and Ecuador. A variety of musicians attended the seminars to share their experiences with Latin music and Latin jazz. Participants included Eguie Castillo, percussionist and professor at Berkley; our very own Felix Arocho, Director of the Hostos Cultural Art Center; Nellie Calderon; Francisco Calderon; Joseph Powell; Debbie Mercado; Pete Gonzalez; and Ana Howard. Hostos matriculated students joined as well (Marie Inamori).
Joe’s commitment to preserving our culture through music is unmatched. Joe would say, “Nena this is about making sure that our children understand and learn about salsa and not the one you cook with. It’s about culture.”
Joe was a walking encyclopedia for all facts about El Rey del Timbal. Joe would explain, “Tito Puente is not only El Rey of the timbales, he was also a composer, an arranger and conductor of music, and a band leader. He played multiple instruments, the first to play vibes in Latin music. In addition, he performed for 4 presidents at the White House: two Republicans and two Democrats.”
Attending Joe’s lectures was like traveling on a time machine. During the lectures, you were exposed to an impressive archive of music records and video recordings. The seminars covered artists Mario Bauza, CaChao, Celia Cruz,
Joe was Tito Puente’s longtime publicist and confidant. His memories with Tito Puente are included in the book Mambo Diablo: My Journey with Tito Puente, an internationally-acclaimed text with deep insights into the dexterity of

El Rey del Timbal. Joe was key to keeping Tito Puente’s legacy alive through many projects during and after Tito Puente’s passing. Of great importance was his role as Chairman of the Tito Puente Scholarship Fund, which benefitted hundreds of adolescents interested in pursuing careers in music. He was instrumental in establishing the “Tito Puente Legacy Project” at Hostos — the priceless collection of Tito Puente posters, instruments, awards, and memorabilia that reside in the lobby of the College’s East Academic Complex. He was deeply connected to the College’s Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, where his expertise shaped some of the most memorable concerts, including the 3-day retrospective ¡El Inolvidable! Tito Rodríguez in 2022 and Mambo Diablo: Honoring Tito Puente in 2023.
