Diagnosis: Flexor Digitorum Profundus Avulsion (jersey finger), Type IV Jersey finger is an injury in which a forced extension load on a flexed finger results in avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon attachment at the distal phalanx. A type IV jersey finger injury (Leddy and Packer classification) describes combined osseous avulsion and tendon avulsion from the bony fragment with proximal tendon retraction. Radiographs can detect the avulsion but ultrasound or MR imaging is necessary to evaluate for isolated tendon avulsion or tendon avulsion in addition to osseous avulsion, as well as degree of retraction. Treatment is surgical and guided by imaging findings.
